Typography Tuesday

Last month, the Milwaukee Public Library's Arts & Media Department held its first Art Book Club session. Intended as an informal art book appreciation club that meets once a month in the Art, Music, and Recreation room, each session explores a different theme by looking at the wide variety of art materials in the collection. The collection is historical, non-circulating, and vast. I attended and spent an hour and a half mesmerized by the array of luscious materials presented.

There was design, architecture, fashion, and much more. As a type nerd, I was especially drawn to the several late 19th- and early 20th-century type specimen books on the tables. Here, for example, are some pages of chromatic initials by various European and American companies from Schriften Atlas, compiled by Ludwig Petzendorfer and published in Stuttgart by Julius Hoffmann in 1898.

MPL held its second Art Book Club session on the theme of "Animals" last night, but I missed it because I was conducting an evening instruction session. Dang! But I'll be attending future sessions when I can and I'll keep y'all apprised.

I found it depressing that when Meleanor faced the Silver Owls, it was raining hard and she didn't have an umbrella to shield her from it. In her life, she was always the spoiled and sheltered princess so her standing in the rain feels so dissonance with her noble nature, but it also tells that she went in that battlefield without anyone protecting her.

I also realized that, unlike Levan, when Meleanor bid goodbye to Lilia, she never said that she'll return. Baul and Lilia trusted that she'll survive and return home yet Meleanor didn't believe that could happen so she didn't promise she'll come back. 💔😭

I'm rewatching leverage out of nostalgia and some other emotion I haven't figured out yet, and I do think there's a story in "Maggie Ford Collins deals with having the most unhinged ex in her suburban book group, learns to hotwire a car, and gets her groove back, not in that particular order."

Typography Tuesday

Last week, I showed you some initials I encountered at the Milwaukee Public Library's first Art Book Club gathering in October. Those initials were from an 1898 specimen book, Schriften Atlas, compiled by Ludwig Petzendorfer. This week I'm showing some alphabet sets from another collection I encountered there. These specimens are from Vignettes, lettres, chiffres, monogrammes et rehauts modernes, published in Paris by Les Éditions Guérinet, R. Panzani, successeur in 1931. The specimen book includes alphabets by several designers. The sets shown here are by A. Bardi and P. Picaud, whom I have not been able to identify. Still, the letter forms are quite enjoyable.

The next Art Book Club session at MPL will be on Saturday, December 16, 2023, 1:30-3 pm, with the theme of "Technology."

Your recent drawing with Ace reminded me that Mayu also has a ship with him hshshs I’m actually curious about how their dynamic will be though when you release more content of them in the future!

This is an ask from months ago but 💀 since Shuu brought it up recently I finally gained the motivation to answer and draw something (referring to my last post)

BUT the gist of it is they're the very typical shoujo manga "besties-to-lovers" type of dynamic, with Ace being the type of guy who likes to bully and tease his crush (typical) and they're dumbasses who banter a lot. He's quite casual with physical touch, often just throwing an arm around her shoulders or just propping an elbow on her head like she's a convenient armrest. The one problem is Mayu is Oblivious™ to any of Ace's advances because she just assumes Ace treats every girl like this and she just happens to, unfortunately, be the only one around. She almost feels bad for him. Ace is also Tsundere and will deny it if someone else suggests his actions have any deeper meaning ("H-haaah? Who'd like her!"), so uh, good luck dude... Though despite how talented he is at unlocking her exasperated expression, they're still close friends who have each other's back ww

TL;DR They're very silly and dumb and the ship that's mainly comedy and I really need to draw more of them 💥

Cover of the second volume of the graphic novel that Molly Ostertag wrote and i drew, Dungeon Club: Time to Party! it's coming out on July 9!!!

the series is about a group of 8th graders playing D&D. we delve into their in-game adventures and see how their real world experiences shape the campaign. you'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll want to play your own session lol! it's a lot of fun and i love drawing every page.

I colored this cover, but the interior colors are by Amelia Allore and they are SO beautiful. please check it out, u gotta see it!!
