Soooo…. what ever happened to the puppets from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer? And why was Santa such a grumpy bastard?

Well, the answer to that first question ended up being a much more complicated story than it first appeared, even complete with a twist ending. And while researching it, I stumbled across the tale of a forgotten Japanese animation pioneer who revolutionized animation industries in Japan AND China, made a whole bunch of propaganda during WWII and the Chinese Civil War, and then created the Rankin/Bass "Animagic" animation style and animated all those classically American classic stop-motion Christmas classics that we know and love. Tadahito "Tad" Mochinaga (持永 只仁).

That's right, Rankin/Bass was an anime studio!

Born in 1919, Mochinaga was inspired by early Walt Disney shorts to become an animator. Much like Disney, he built Japan's first ever multi-plane camera rig,

Ari-chan (アリチャン, 1941)

before being contracted to make war propaganda.

Ironically at the same time he was working under Mitsuyo Seo (瀬尾 光世) on Momotarou's Sea Eagles (1943)—a delightful picture about a bunch of cute little animals triumphantly bombing the shit out of those fat, stupid Americans at Pearl Harbor—his biggest inspiration was working on his own exciting propaganda cartoons from the exact opposite side of the same conflict.

But it was during his time working under the Chinese Communist Party that he inadvertently popularized stop-motion puppet animation in east Asia.

Tasked with making a puppet film that satirized the Nationalist Party's leader, but also dealing with an extreme shortage of film in the country, Mochinaga realized that if he stiffened the joints of the puppets, posed them manually and shot them frame-by-frame instead, he could use only the exact number of frames necessary.

He would continue to refine that stop-motion style after returning to Japan,

and eventually catch the eye of an American producer, Arthur Rankin Jr, who had just started a studio with his friend Jules Bass.

The story continues in much greater detail in this video, which completely obliterated my other plans for the month, and which I promise, does actually answer the question at the start of this post. I really didn't expect this project to balloon into an epic that spans an entire century, but in order to understand the ending, you have to start at the beginning!

Seriously though, I think this is the best video I've made yet and you KNOW I spent an absurd amount of time learning 3D modeling/rigging/texturing/animation to make what amounts to just some stylistic icing on the cake, but it's a bit different from what I usually make and youtube can punish you for that so if you do find the video interesting and feel like sharing it with someone you think would also be interested, I will personally show up at your house with an old satchel bursting with deliciously ripe oranges and squeeze all that sweet, sloppy nectar by hand, one-by-one directly into your expectant, gaping maw.

Midnight City: Jeff the Killer

★ He is 27, and he's a Capricorn sun, Scorpio Moon, and Taurus Rising (Gemini mercury, Sagittarius Venus, Sagittarius Mars, Leo Jupiter, Aries Saturn, Aquarius Neptune, Sagittarius Pluto)

★ Jeff stands at 6', has a slim physique but has defined, strong muscles. Not too bulky but not a twig by any means. His body fat % is probably around 6-7%. He's pale nut not ghost white.

★ Is from a mid-middle class family from Montana.

★ His chelsea smile has long since healed into keloid scars, never burned or cut his eyelids, only has a few burn scars along his temples and forehead that he covers with his hair.

★ His hair is very slightly wavy, parted in the middle, and of course it's black. His natural colour was very dark brown. He'll dye it maybe once a year if he feels like it. It goes down right past his pecs/to hs mid back.

★ Has really nice defined eyebrows and lighter blue hunter eyes. His nose is thin, has a ridge from being broken a couple times, and is upturned slightly.

★ Wears guyliner and it's the hottest thing you've ever seen.

★ Thin, but strong jawline. Doesn't care for growing out his facial hair past a week or two, mostly likes to be clean shaven which can be hard at times because of his scars.

★ Has always been conventionally attractive and had a huge complex about it that shattered when he saw his face permanently altered, making him have the mental break that made the chelsea smile.

★ A metalhead, 100%. Goes to underground shows a lot and doesn't bother hiding his face. He has grown to love what he made of himself.

★ Genuinely enjoys impulsively planning his next kill, he gets a rush from playing God with someone's life.

★ Very confident and sure of himself, but surprisingly not full of himself. Jeff has gotten good at what he does and knows it.

★ Charming to a fault, but also cold and sometimes rude. Doesn't care to come off any type of way. He's very apathetic when it comes to people and their emotions. Enjoys his own company most, but is friends with Dove, Toby, Jackson (the Puppeteer), and Laughing Jack.

★ Doesn't work for Slenderman, is 100% a lone wolf. He doesn't fuck with the fact that Slender exists, so he stays clear of him as much as he can.

★ Has his own cabin in the woods, mostly everyone does if they share it or not.

★ Sings! He loves music. I think he'd sound like Landon Tewers. When he hangs out with Dove, they jam together.

★ He is "Need To Change" by Landon Tewers personified. He can be a great lover, but he will chose himself at the end of the day. Very self aware.

★ He's covered in stick and poke tattoos and has self inflicted scars only for counting each kill, not no barcodes. They're 1cm lines neatly cut on his left pec.

★ Is a sucker for real goth women. Don't hand him an e-girl or TikTok alt girl. He wants a trad goth baddie, hopefully with some amount of bloodlust.

★ Wants a lip piercing but hasn't gotten it because "What if it gets caught on something and rips his lip apart?"

★ He tends to not sleep for a couple days at a time then sleeps for 18-20 hours and act like nothing happened.

★ Uses recreational drugs sometimes. Is no stranger to blow, xanax, 2CB, or molly. Drinks frequently and smoked weed daily. He's even learning how to grow!

★ Isn't a sociopath. He still very much has feelings, lots of big feelings. Jeff is a sadist in non-sexual terms. He enjoys seeing people in pain and being the one to cause the pain.

hey y'all. i really didn't wanna make a post of this nature cuz i really dislike having to ask for help, but i'm kind of between a rock and a hard place rn.

i cannot afford groceries. my boyfriend and i were budgeting hard to use our money for them, but we've gotten to a point where neither of us can afford groceries for the foreseeable future.

Inspired by @judasiskariot who created a full description of her Tav - Saulus, I decided to create something similar to Aristen with screenshots to make the story more "credible". 💜.

Early years of life:

Aristen was born directly from the God of Murder. When father created her, he wanted her not to be an ordinary Bhaalspawn. She was supposed to be an immortal, eternally young demigod. Her appearance was supposed to be the opposite of her destiny. Beautiful and delicate beauty, bright blue-turquoise eyes, light blonde hair. Her look was supposed to attract and inspire trust. Could an elf who looked like an innocent angel be a bloody murderer? And so it happened - Aristen was born, for now as a storm sorcery elven baby. Bhaal wanted her to be very high in the hierarchy when she grew up, but the attack on the temple by unknown perpetrators thwarted these plans. During the raid, an elven infant was found with a white, decorative scarf with the word "Aristen"  written in blood on it.

The child was placed in the elves’ village in the stepfamily of wood elves called Rosegrove. Only her mother, father and grandmother knew that she might be Bhaal's child and they decided that they will do their best to save Aristen from her destiny. Aristen developed her magical skills and she did not show any murderous symptoms, on the contrary, she showed great empathy and kindness. Ari had a great relationship with her stepfamily and was much-loved in the village. However, everything changed when she was 25. A very handsome and gallant half-elf Elwyn came to their village. Aristen very quickly fell in love with him - she thought it was mutual.

Despite the huge protest of her adoptive family, she went with her lover to Baldur's Gate. When the pair reached the city, it turned out that Elwyn was just a mercenary hired by the Bhaal's cult and his only task was to bring Aristen to the temple of the God of Murder. And so Aristen, who was betrayed by her beloved one lost control of herself, became a bloodthirsty killing machine and a puppet of her real father.

A new beginning (in-game events):

Being a Bhaal's doll could have lasted for ages if not a certain incident. One day Aristen was kidnapped by a Mind Flayer's ship. She was infected with their tadpole and lost her memory. Luckily for her, there was a plane crash, which she miraculously survived and managed to escape. Now she had a new goal - to get rid of the tadpole and find out who she is. During her journey she learned the truth about her murderous origins. But she wasn't alone in this. Aristen met some loyal friends: Gale (a human wizard who was harmed by the goddess of magic, Mystra), Karlach (tiefling who, like Ari, was betrayed by the person she trusted), Lae'zel (githyanki who was deceived by her queen), Shadowheart (a priestess of Shar who rejected her goddess), Wyll (human Warlock who sacrificed a lot to save others), Halsin (an elf druid who likes to carve ducks from wood), Jaheira (half elf and High Harper) and Minsc (Jaheira's friend who considers his hamster to be his mentor). And even though everyone supported her, Aristen felt that they didn't fully understand her, they don't know what it means to be someone's puppet. Except for one person who had similar sins as her. A men who has been a plaything for the powerful vampire for over 200 years. That toy was Astarion, high elf, vampire spawn. At first, Aristen had mixed feelings towards him, but later she realized that they were two of a kind. He was the only one who truly understood her dark urge and he truly was not afraid of her. They fell in love with each other.

One night the urge to kill become strong and Aristen had mighty desire to kill Astarion. Resisting her whisperings, she decided to do everything to save him. Aristen woke him up and asked him to tie her up. She felt that after such an incident the vampire would break up with her. Who would want a partner who could kill you in the middle of the night ? But no, Astarion didn't break up with her, he was with her all night, watching over her. He wasn't even mad at her. He didn't see her as a monster, but only as a normal person who had been wronged by fate - she saw him the same way. Thanks to Astarion, everything became easier and impossible things became possible.

While looking for salvation for herself and her companions, it turned out that she was the one who came up with the whole idea of ​​culting the Absolute. This broke her, she felt that her friends blame her for this whole situation. Only one person thanked her - Astarion. Thanks to all this confusion, he separated himself from his master Cazador and had free will. Aristen then believed that they were meant to be together, this strange chain of events was not caused by chance. There must have been some higher powers involved here. She also decided that she had to fix everything - destroy the cult of the Absolute and try to free herself from her murderous father. And so it happened - the cult was destroyed and Aristen, with the help of the god Jergal, cuts herself off from Bhaal and the dark urge. The tadpoles in the heads disappeared, she, her friends and the Baldur's Gate were safe. Aristen with her companions even killed Cazador, so Astarion no longer had to fear his master. Aristen and her lover began to live on their own terms.

Post-game events:

After defeating Nestor's Brain Aristen started to help rebuild Baldur's Gate - unfortunately - the city was badly damaged. In return, the city authorities gave her and Astarion a small apartment in the Lower City. This made her very happy, she could finally experience a normal life. She also began searching for information about artifacts that would help protect Astarion from the sun - this became her main goal. The news that she and her friends had saved Baldur's Gate quickly spread beyond the city. And so one day a wood elf knocked on her apartment. He seemed familiar to her, but she didn't know where she knew him from. He knew her name and seemed to know her very well. He gave her a Noblestalk potion and suggested that she drink it and it would help her remember some things from her past. The potion could have been poison and this elf could have had evil intentions. But Aristen felt that he was someone very important to her and agreed to drink the medicine. She regained partial memories - both bad and good. Suddenly she remembered where she grew up and her stepfamily. She realized that the elf who visited her is her stepfather.

She agreed to go with him to the village where she grew up. And together with Astarion they set out on a new journey. After reaching the village, everyone was very happy for her return. She was afraid that they would treat her like a monster, like a leper. But no, she was surrounded by care and love. To make Aristen remember all earlier life, she was subjected to a special trance made by her grandmother. After that she remembered everything, the funny situations with her sister, making flower wreaths with her mother, walks in the forest with her father and practicing magic with her grandmother.

She also remembered the man who contributed to all her tragedy - Elwyn. She remembered how he feigned love for her and he did it all of his own free will for financial gain. She hated this man in few seconds.

Aristen and Astarion stayed in the village for a while and moved on to find a way to protect Astarion from the sun. They also had a new companion, Fiona (Aristen's younger sister) who wanted to see some of the world. To have money for the trip, the three of them took various jobs. Sometimes they were mercenaries, sometimes they were doing small jobs or hunting bandits. Fiona also performed in inns, as she was a bard.

After a long time and reading dozens of old books and scrolls, Aristen, in an old, forgotten temple in the middle of nowhere, found an enchanted pendant that allowed Astarion to enjoy the sun again after many years. However, all three of them continued their traveling lifestyle.

One night Aristen and Astarion were lying on the grass and watching the stars. Then Ari suggested to her beloved one that they maybe return permanently to Baldur's Gate and start a simple, city life. He agreed and asked if she would become his wife. Aristen was surprised, despite spending so many years by Astarion's side, she was afraid that one day he would leave her. She still considered herself a monster, even though she had cut herself off from her father many years ago. Aristen was always afraid that she would somehow become a bloodthirsty murderer again. And Astarion could have almost any woman - she had seen more than once how lustfully ladies looked at him. But he chose her and wants to be with her forever.

The wedding took place in her native village. Her entire family and friends celebrated one of the most beautiful days of her life.

After their honeymoon, they returned permanently to Baldur's Gate. Fiona also settled in the city, where she began to develop her bardic career. Astarion and Aristen continued to work as a mercenary and as the bandit hunters in the city and surrounding areas. Over time, Astarion founded his own tailor shop (yes, I always saw him as a tailor :D).

What the future will bring for them? Who knows, after all, they have eternity ahead of them...

Yes I do! Au aside these are some general headcanons for both Rolfe and Earl.

Rolfe:

During his 20’s he used to do puppet shows at schools and hospitals for money. Has an older brother but they don’t talk to each other; family issues. Is gay but doesn’t admit it ( Rolfe, it’s extremely obvious bud) He also judges people of the LQBTQ+ community but questions his sexuality??? Earl is his somewhat adopted son. Is actually a great cook. Been to jail for shoplifting. Stole Mitzi’s nail polish once, she still has no idea it was him. Son of Wolfman Jack! Cries everytime Earl heads to school. Sings girly songs at home like “Girls just want to have fun and Material Girl” Kisses his mirror every morning and night cuz no one is there to do it for ‘em. LOL 🤣 Is lactose intolerant but still eats a shit ton of dairy anyways. Uses modern slang to piss off Earl. Carries a nail filer in one of his suit pockets. Does the telephone finger twirl thing while in a call. Owns women’s underwear (Shrek reference) Goes to disco dance clubs every weekend. Took aerobics class at some point but popped a nerve and he never attended again. He has serious back problems and arthritis. 34 years old, Leo.

Earl:

Earl’s favorite food is jam on toast. He hates personal hygiene and has constant tantrums whenever it’s bath time. Pretended to have a seizure to see how Rolfe would react but after he saw Rolfe calling 911, he called it quits ( he was grounded for a week) Smokes crayons. Sleeps in a drawer. Called Rolfe “dad” on accident but then denied it. Cliché 80’s bully (throws spitballs and steals lunch money) Carries a blanket with him for emotional support. Shaved the top of his head while messing with Rolfe’s razor which explains the cap he always has on. Is 3 puppet years old; 12 in human years, Aries.

Tamed/Ari (she/it/pup) was originally based off my experiences with... yk... being a kid on discord if you get the gist, but eventually I stopped being like that, so my best friend is helping me write it now. Her kanji is 牲. Also pup definitely kisses puppeteer on the mouth

Phantasm/Liane (she/her) is canonically smart as hell. Just absolutely genius. She's based off my experiences with partial homelessness. Her design was based off both Cinderella and Alice in Wonderland. Her kanji is 夢.

Puppeteer/Sara (she/they) is by far the one I relate to the least, because she has extremely high empathy and moral OCD, both of which i do not have. I made her up while I was watching moral orel and was like "wait... puppet tptm girl..." Their kanji is 罪.

Shifter/Maliri (she/he) is probably my favorite, because her last listened to song is literally me right now. I'm debating changing his pronouns but every time I do the he/him keeps coming back help anyways she's the oldest of the group as well! His kanji is 奼, which is really damn lazy because it literally just means "pretty woman" but whatever

Both Rotten/Elliott (he/they) and Blackjack/Trey (any) are preexisting OCs of mine made TPTM-ified. Watch out for Option 2 on tapas when i eventually post it because that's their thing!! They are extremely yearning yuraoi, their kanji are 病 and 負

Faker/Taylor (she/her) is simultaneously extremely easy to write and also so damn hard. She has so much personality and yet none at all and it's all kinda mixed into this facade of her being perfectly fine. She's easy to write because I've experienced the same, but holy shit. Why does she have so much going on. Anyways she makes memes sometimes. Her kanji is 扮

Final/Claire (she/they/it) is my unofficial daughter. I love them so much I want only the best for them ever. Also shes aromantic !! Its kanji is 殺

Six new fan concepts (Including first concept of Igor)

here is a compilation of new concepts. the first concept is Ari in one of his casual attires and a blue butterfly. the second one features Dai, concept 3, 4, and 5 are Hana. one of them is a shadow version of her. concept 3 actually reveals that she will have black hair in the epilogue of the story. the fifth concept shows Hana in the dark with a puppet shadow behind her.

I was going to use the image for another Reincarnation track on the P6 IP soundtrack but i couldn't find a remix anywhere. and last but not least, the first fan concept of Igor for P6.

Im bored and also working on a big post with some head canons about several characters with ref sheets, so im gonna make a birthday list real quick. I tried to keep a lot of this as canon as possible, but I have changed some ages and some birthdays aren't accurate because for some of these characters nothing would show up. i saw wicked!! 8/10 movie very good. i also have many thoughts head full. i fully acknowledge that these thoughts could only belong to the diseased mind of a person who has thought too much about wicked for the last 7+ years. anyway spoilers and general ambivalent thoughts ahead etc

ari was funny and pretty good! will expand on her later. i think they did popular the best they could in a movie format given that the song relies so much on improv, physical comedy, audience response, etc.

neutral to bad things:

ok so ariana. very eyebrow-heavy performance. not bad vocally! it was foul to make her sing with cheno during osd though, the difference in quality was so clear lmao. i’m interested to see how she’ll deal with act 2 both vocally and acting-wise

i didn’t like how light ariana sang throughout the whole movie. idk if she was directed to do this though—i could see them telling her to do glinda less obnoxious or tone down the comedy which i understand for a movie. but come on girl it won’t kill you to do a full belt in the studio ONCE

ariana and cynthia’s voices do not blend well. you can tell cynthia was trying to tone herself down to match ari and ari was just not giving in return

the mixing was weirdly unbalanced in a lot of the duety portions and i couldn’t tell whether it was the fault of the sound design or the actors just not being able to sound good together lol

it fucking DRAGGED. there is a 90-minute edit of this movie that could easily have existed. none of us needed to hear something bad or a sentimental man. they took every small pause in the music and stretched it out to the point where it interrupted the flow of the song AND became patently obvious that they were trying to pad for time. the new part of one short day with idina and kristin was not good and also too long. the added chase scene before defying gravity started out fun but then went on way longer than it should have. the ozdust dance was SO LONG my god. i could write up a whole list of shit that went on pointlessly for way too long but we would be here all day

there are some elphabas who can carry i’m not that girl. cynthia is not one of them and this is my only complaint about her performance. she divafied a song that is not meant to be divafied

dancing though life was arranged and directed badly. for lack of a better term it’s meant to be a stoner song and it was way too punchy. also if you’re going to insist on casting a white fiyero at least make him good #notmyfiyero

the lighting was often not good??? i think because a lot of it was filmed outside and the sun washed out the set or created a glare. some odd color grading choices as well. really weird because otherwise visually the movie was stunning as i said before

this is a criticism of many modern movies, definitely not wicked-specific, but a lot of the the costumes looked cheap and it’s because of productions cutting corners when it comes to materials and tailoring. especially compared to the show costumes which are so intricate and structurally well-made because they’ve had to last for literally 20 years. we need to ban polyester from film sets i’m so serious

Character Details A girl who performs her puppet show on the streets, and looks to be about the same age as me. She always avoids talking about herself, and seems to be hiding many secrets...

Personal Data 1 Miyu was a girl performing on the street when I visited Shinjuku. Her puppet show "The Little Mermaid" attracted many people's attention. After the performance, she was questioned by the police. She seemed to be struggling to deal with this, so I helped her out as I was passing by, and we got to know each other and became friends. She seems to like to call me "brother"... it's a bit much.

Personal Data 2 Miyu didn't seem to know much about the street conditions in Shinjuku, and was almost blackmailed by some gangsters. Fortunately, I secretly called the police and helped Miyu drive away the gangsters. The two times I've helped her made her trust me more, so she promised to find an opportunity to tell me the truth of her situation.

Personal Data 3 After the trouble last time, Miyu was ready to move from Shinjuku to another location to perform. But before that, Miyu hoped to fulfill her promise and tell me her actual situation. As she explained, I learned that she wanted to escape the control of her parents, and chose to run away from home and live alone... Miyu's persistence and hard work are admirable, but it's really difficult to live off of french fries. Is she okay?

Personal Data 4 After a series of preparations, Miyu was ready to start performing again, in Kichijoji. As this was her first performance, she asked that I accompany her. The performance went smoothly, but the audience's comments about the fate of the Little Mermaid made Miyu fall into deep thought... Perhaps it's because of their similarity that Miyu's able to perform The Little Mermaid so vividly.

Personal Data 5 Miyu's performances are becoming more and more successful, and larger and larger audiences are attracted. However, during one performance, Miyu was suddenly attacked by a man of unknown origin in a black suit. Fortunately, we responded in time and Miyu was not injured... but this man in a black suit seems to have been lurking around Miyu for a while. Who is he...?

Personal Data 6 The Tokyo Street Performers Festival event is coming up, and as a street performer herself, Miyu also wants to participate, so she began to actively prepare for it. But the man in a black suit who spies on everything from a short distance still makes people feel a bit uneasy...

Personal Data 9 Seeking to stop Miyu, her parents didn't hesitate to use their resources, and got the venue permit for the Street Performers Festival cancelled. Miyu didn't want everyone to suffer because of her, so she was going to agree to return home... but seeing how Miyu has been working hard all this time, none of us wanted her to give up. We persuaded Miyu not to, and began to search for another place to host the event. Miyu was uplifted by everyone and decided to try as well. Maybe... now's also the time for the Phantom Thieves to try something, too.

Personal Data 10 Miyu's parents had a change of heart, and the event was allowed to be held as originally planned. In order to prepare, Miyu came to the stage to practice. She happily performed her puppet show before the crowd. Not far away, her parents stood secretly watching her... They seemed to gradually understand Miyu more, and let her choose her path based on her own wishes. The future is still far off and requires a lot of hard work, but I believe Miyu will be able to use her own legs to move forward.

Went and saw that $70 award winning puppet show Wonderful Joe. His puppets were masterful, his stage engineering incredible, but the story was weird and very much written by a gay white man that you can tell has never been anything close to unhoused but is trying to write about unhoused people.

It was our certified Theatre Friends that invited us and we thought we'd be sitting together, but we got our tickets and we were on the exact opposite side of the theatre, same row, facing each other. They sent us a potato quality photo of Aries and I staring at them from the other side. Treasure.

Anyway, theatre friend had a long winded cancer scare, but is now confirmed cancer free, so she's having a It's Not Cancer party and I'm so relieved and happy for her!! Thank fuck.

Well now I have a burning desire to know; how many fallen exorcist are there and why did they Fall? Did they all have a crisis of faith like Vaggie did in canon? Did they end up with Carmine just because or is that like the pre-approved immigration job for fallen murder angels?

Back before Adam died Carmilla ran the executioners, at the time they were just a defensive force for heaven should anyone who strayed decide to fight heaven.

After some time of Adam being in heaven he suggested the yearly genocide and Sera and the elders of heaven ruled in his favor.

Carmilla was horrified by this and tired to stand against but she was labeled a traitor and a fight was started between the executioners who preferred Carmilla and those who liked Adam.

Adam had Sera and all but one elder of heaven in Zestial on his side so Carmilla's side lost, quite a few executioners died and Carmilla made a deal with Lucifer and Lilith to be a weapons manufacturer.

The executioners became the exterminators because I just realized that they were called that in the show and not what I've been calling them and those loyal to Carmilla helped her found and now run carmine industries.

The more important ones who joined Carmilla including Seth (the 3rd son of Adam because yes, I did have to look that up to remember him), Ari, and Ezra. Executioners could be any gender. Exterminators are just women besides Adam ig.

Seth's unveiled form is similar to Adams. He doesn't have a halo anymore nor do any of the executioners who left with Carmilla. His form is pure black though.

Ari is similar to Charlie as to say that they both have doll/puppet motifs. Ari is much less regal looking with muddy grey plates covering them. She's regarded as the weakest of the original executioners who stayed with Carmilla (and lived to tell the tale) she's still plenty strong though.

Ezra is almost similar to Cain in a way. They both have demonic forms that have a hole in the chest and heavy armor in every other place. If the armor breaks off she looks angelic in the be not afraid sense.

Though Cain is much darker and more mangled looking in design.
