I saw your post about orientalism and I was glad to see that I am not the only one who wanted to know more. I am eager to dive into your list, but I was wondering if there's a major/ course that focuses on orientalism? Maybe something online? Thanks!
Hi nonnie! Orientalism is actually quite common these days as a module if you're studying in majors like: Literatures in English, Arab and Islamic Studies, Comparative Literature, Cultural Studies, Gender and Queer Studies, Race Studies, Area Studies, and definitely History. Some universities even have Orientalism as a separate major on its own, which is pretty freaking dope if you ask me.
I tried looking up online courses for you, but honestly since that is not how I studied, I don't want to recommend a course and it turns out shitty or eurocentric lol
If you or anyone wants to shoot me a message asking for specific references, my DMs are open!
The list of videos/references to understand more about orientalism mentioned by nonnie

Daily plan 1, December 3rd 2022
Today is one of the rare Saturdays where I don't have to work, so I'll be going to the library in the late morning/early afternoon. Afterwards I will make onion soup for a family dinner we will be having tomorrow. After not having had time to do so for a good 3 weeks I want to just play some video games tonight, but we'll see if I get to it.
Planning~
Finish up the cultural readings
Get started on the Historical readings
Finish an online class on the territorialization of cyberspace
Learn the upcoming week's vocabulary
Write a motivational email to apply for a classical chinese extracurricular
Write an email to the education administration about not being able to reserve a spot in our Asian library

i've never seen one of those 'what your major says about you' posts about white people in area studies so i'm gonna make rn please note that at the top of the list for literally all of these are people who are i need to use my russian and eastern european studies ma for something
(based off of those with ik people in them justice for south asian studies) these can all be further subdivided based on research interests like the vibe of someone who studies the balkans is different than someone who studies russia
russian, eastern european and eurasian studies: you are really into history and politics AND youre a bit of a careerist. death of stalin is one of your favorite movies. you know at least one person who is desperate to work for the cia. every few weeks you ask if you should go to law school. you constantly explain that you are not russian and are ready to explain why ukrainian and russian are different languages at all times. you wonder why your department houses persian and turkish classes (probably funding)
east asian studies: this type varies a lot and is by far the most dependent on gender. if your a women you're cool and you dress well. the girls are SHOCKED to hear you speak mandarin. you try not to make it too known but you definitely have a favorite anime. some of your male counterparts could learn to bathe a little more.
middle eastern studies: the final boss of evil ir bros. you have a weirdly patronizing approach to middle eastern politics and half your wardrobe is from j.crew. how was your summer internship in dc? please tell me more about the benefits of military service. unless ofc you do historical research then you are the sexiest person alive and have cool tastes.
jewish studies: you are jewish or "feel a spiritual connection to judaism" either way your vibe is very nerdy academic jewish archetype in a way that is either makes you incredibly endearing or insufferable to be around. you feel like my kin bc we have thoughts on poland

It's just another kind of silliness
I do what I do. The typicals of pure reality are insane, but someone may refer to the ordinary things with effervescent sound and continous architecture: oh, in fact the continuity of sheer reality is automatic, and someone may see the essences of things corresponding to the ordinary thing that we know and love because there is something arousing about this ordinary facade that is full of love and binary code that moves in sheer motions towards the silliness of sheer nonsense. I make sense of the ordinary things, because I want to make sense of the things that happen. Nevertheless, I am stuck in the craziness of being yourself and I don't make sense of anything because I am a fool. So basically I reform myself and I generate concepts in a continuous flow that is the same things as everything, because we do what we do and we like it that way. But maybe there is something silly going on in the end: who knows? I am just a silly fool who doesn't do anything right, but I do what I can and I am basically just reconsidered in the folly of being yourself and of being alive. So that's where it all comes together: silliness and war, marshal and trooper, peasant and knight. We see that it is all connected.

One of the most bizarre feelings imo is finding out about a prejudice you didn't know existed
Like. I only recently found out that there's areas IN MY OWN COUNTRY where discrimination against Italian people is a genuine problem
Like
I definitely know WHY I always assumed Racism was a prejudice more dependant on differences in skin colour but holy shit damn yeah okay so there's also ultraviolet racism too huh, we're all just drinking the shitty bitch water then

Prompt 207
Danny does not come out of the portal.
In fact, he’s lost. Very lost. He just wants to go home and is getting scared of everything around him because he doesn’t know what’s going on. But! But he’s found an (admittedly also terrifying) castle or keep or whatever they’re called that all the ghosts avoid!
It never exactly enters his mind that they might have been avoiding such a place for a reason.
In unrelated news, the first thing Fright Knight sees after his sword was (accidentally) knocked free from its prison is not a blob ghost- they’ve done it a few times over the eternities- but a ghostling. A newborn ghostling, who promptly bursts into tears to his genuine horror. What did he do?!

Found the cutest little tea house today. I worked on a term paper and studied some French while sipping just the nicest tea.
Exiting the house after 3 days of the Easter long weekend has proved to be an excellent idea. 10/10 will do again.

Why speak about Asia?
There is a predicament that Asia will overtake the West in the coming years; a nation that has to this day always been introverted and relishing in its own splendour; but perhaps that is all misconstrual caused by a Western view, that believes that the entire world is somehow to be caught in a mean system of competition, or conquest; but we see that Asia has its fair share of conquerors; in fact, the Mongol empire came from Asia, although it has not had the longevity, culturally it seems, as the Roman empire; for where is Mongolia today in the countries of the middle-east and far east? But I don't think so. Asia is introverted, and frivolous, not at all bound by some fine Western values like sobriety and dilligence, although China is of course quite dilligent, and India sober, but I don't much care for forms of virtue that don't go forward into civility, but of course no one can say that the West is civilized, even though the West is scientific, modern and well-behaved, although at the same time it is of course terrible, unfair and cruel. But I don't believe people are well off in the West. I feel something true about that silly adage of the white man's burden. However, I don't want to say something so politically incorrect, so I will redact the statement, perhaps. Be that as it may, I admire figures in East and West, and I don't believe the West superior. And I should rethink the old relationships between Britain and Africa and those affairs, that have no decent meaning. I tell you, I have skills, right? The skills of the scholar. Today's post is remarkably scholarly, if I may say so. Science is credible, and it is to be undertaken by silly snobs like me, but I like all kinds of talk. You see, in this blog I am totally free; I might as well say something important; you know, Asian studies is truly an easy field; and I am interested not so much in Asian Studies, which is my alma mater, but in Area Studies in general, in which I would deem myself skilled - and it is all about finding out the truth about places, it is about entering the discourse of a place seeing the nuances of these things, and so on and so forth; but maybe it is all just talk. The skills are real and you know, I suppose anyone can do physics, and anyone can do Asian Studies, or Area Studies you know? But it is about the skills: I am skilled in this, and it is a lifetime of skills, but perhaps not perfect skills, which is why I still say so many idiotic things, but I can get better at it; perhaps there is a degree at which you are an expert, but also a degree at which you are capable of becoming an expert without too many outside interference, et cetera; but this is all chit-chat. In any case, you need to know the usefulness of your field. Without this idea of usefulness, you are aimless, and I studied history before I studied Asian Studies, and history is useful on a much more general level than Area Studies, which are useful in a very specific, humanistic way, which is less forceful, more volatile, but it must not be underestimated; as I said, I can say something important, it don't matter, but we have these conversations because we wish to convey some part of the greater meaning of all Science, and it is all about communication, I don't need to understand as much as I need to know, and if I can explain it I certainly understand it.
