As a little farewell gift to the remake, here's a small analysis on Ataru and Lum's final exchange in the series.

Personally, I find this exchange very interesting and that it has two very important meanings to it, especially considering how it is phrased:

Ataru saying that he'll eventually say 'I love you', just not now. He basically admits that he loves her here, but indirectly ;) Like, he's not even trying to be tsundere!! There's no 'I don't like you, idiot!!', no 'Yeah, whatever, I guess...' and no ignoring or going 'hmph!'!! He openly states how he feels here and I find this incredible character development considering he could've said any of the previous mentioned but didn't. Early, middle and even the first half of later UY era Ataru would never say such words and would've easily jumped at the options I mentioned but here he basically says 'I love you but I'm not going to say the words until my deathbed'!! It really shows how far Ataru's come especially regarding his relationship with Lum. His major character arc in the series is about growing more comfortable with showing his true self and accepting his emotions and you can really see that he has mostly achieved that by the end. It's beautiful to see how much he's changed and even though this is already so great, what really gets me going feral 100% is the second meaning to their exchange..

The subtle promise in this exchange. Lum tells Ataru the she'll make him say 'I love you' even if it takes her entire life, which suggests that she won't leave him alone till he says the words. Her adding 'even if it takes my entire life' to it, more or less would have what she says mean 'Hopefully, I'll be with you, for life'. Ataru's response is that he'll say it on his deathbed which means that Ataru would only say the magic words right before he dies, which would mean that he wants Lum to be with him till then or to say it in simpler terms, his response would more or less mean 'I want to be with you for life, too'. And since he's supposed to be saying 'I love you' on his deathbed, his words here could also mean 'I'll love you till the end'. This acts as a sort of promise between them, a promise that they'll keep loving and being with each other till the end of time.

To others, it seems like all they're going to do is fight for life, but Ataru and Lum know what they truly mean because no one understands them more than each other.

The Obscure Hidden Yaoi of Ranma 1/2

CW: Mention of Suicide, Period-Typical Transphobic and Homophobic reactions

There's a scene in the manga where Gosunkugi crossdresses to get Ranma's attention(this isn't the first time btw) and sabotage his role in the Romeo & Juliet play.

When he rejects the bomb, they parody a love rejection scene.

Whenever one of Ranma's rivals catches him with a girl that's not Akane/Shampoo, they normally celebrate it and even root for him since he won't be "getting in their way" anymore.

But Gosunkugi gets weirdly jilted about it, heart pumping sound effects and all.

In chapter 200 Gosunkugi gets a set of paper dolls that can control people when given commands. Though accidental, he only puts romantic commands on men.

In particular, Ranma and Gosunkugi's date gets a lot of spotlight, lasting 2 pages out of a 16 page chapter, culminating in this exchange.

After this happened Ranma starts blushing when Gosunkugi walks by and asks what his intentions were earlier.

The next Gosunkugisode is about him reconsidering his thoughts on Ranma since he saved him from bullies, but this gets rebuffed by Gosunkugi buying a mecha armor to defeat him. His crush on Akane gets mentioned less and less.

If the armor doesn't punch the desired target in 30 minutes both the wearer and the target will explode. By the end of the chapter, Ranma has a speech about pride and fighting Gosunkugi fairly. The only part of it that he notices is "man to man".

After this Gosunkugi tearfully swoons over Ranma acknowledging him, describing his current situation as a lovers' suicide and apologizing for not wanting to do it.

The chapter ends with Gosunkugi not being able to finish a sentence directed to Ranma with similar wording to the earlier scene about him being accepted.

Even though he sits directly behind Ranma, this is the last time Gosunkugi ever ambushes him. Even though he sits next to Akane, he never shows any reaction to her anymore and seems to be looking at someone else instead. He only uses his straw dolls to fidget with.

The last line Gosunkugi ever has in the manga has him sweating heavily with his heart beating fast after finding a supposed wedding ring that Ranma had buried in the ground(with Ranma blushing in the back for good measure).

This was just an excuse to list the fruitiest moments these two had.

As a bonus, here's a minor detail that I noticed. Whenever Ranma's rivals want to insult him, they all go "Yurusan!(Unforgivable!)" or "Onore!!(You!!)".

But Gosunkugi instead repeatedly says "Saotome no Baka!!(Stupid Saotome!!)" just like his suitors do.

i recently remembered DickTim Week 2024 is happening very soon and i looked at the prompts again to see if i could get anything out for it and. the Hades & Persephone AU prompt for day 1 has got me really thinking so here's a vague concept i plan to write.

i've been pretty burnt out on modern Hades & Persephone retellings because of how they always seem to fall into the same generic "innocent wide-eyed girl runs from her evil mean mother into the arms of a dark mysterious man because actually she went willingly and chose to marry him" which has gotten repetitive for my tastes. (for clarity i don't care if this retelling is your cup of tea personally, so long as you're not actively trying to rewrite the original myth and claim untrue things about it, if this is your favorite flavor i sincerely hope you enjoy the buffet i just have little interest in it since it feels overdone for me and exhausted of it's supposed commentary atp)

but? but. biblically accurate Hades & Persephone AU has me all kinds of interested. because wait listen so hear me out right. Hades!Dick and Persephone!Tim, obviously. i feel it'd be more loosely inspired by with themes and imagery (though playing with death and nature powers could be interesting, i haven't decided) rather than explicitly making them gods and all. but. something dark and fucked up where Dick and Bruce are especially estranged. maybe to do with Jason's return, maybe to do with them just clashing and having their usual explosive arguments. and Bruce knows the peace needs to be kept, if he and Dick are at odds then everyone starts to pick sides and things just fracture so he needs a peace offering.

and the peace offering is Tim.

Bruce (the stand-in for Zeus) offers up Tim. agrees to have Tim move to Bludhaven and be Dick's... whatever Dick wants him to be. knowing that with the implication comes the likelihood of Dick grooming Tim. and Tim has no real say and is hesitant to put up a real fight. he doesn't want this, he knows what this is going to imply Dick will do to him, but he also knows if he says no things have the possibility to just... fall apart. so he's the unwilling bride, dragged off to the metaphorical underworld (Bludhaven) with Dick, away from his family, his friends, the life he built.

and on the flip side, i think weirdly enough, your best pick for the Demeter stand-in is *Jason*. just, hear me out on that. not necessarily on the side of it being motherly, but on Jason being just estranged enough from the Batfamily to be the one willing to call it out for being bad and wrong and raising bloody hell to get Tim back. maybe it's because Jason wants Tim for himself, maybe it's truly out of a concern for Tim to have autonomy, i'm toying with the idea of it primarily being Tim's POV and him genuinely not knowing which of these is true. (and the truth possibly ends up being a complicated middle ground) and because i like Helena, i think you can use her as the Hekate stand in, the one who strikes a tentative alliance with Jason and tries to go find Tim and bring him back. Tim stuck with Dick, getting groomed and hyperaware of it, possibly even getting fucked the whole time as well, knowing he can't go back without causing massive issues for Dick and Bruce because well, Bruce did promise him to Dick. so he has to adjust his whole life, try to figure out being a vigilante in this new city with Dick breathing down his neck the whole time.

and then much like the ending of the myth, a sort of compromise is struck that's a shaky deal for everyone involved. Tim is put on an essential timeshare, going back and forth between Gotham, where he has friends and family and a support system, then getting dragged right back to Bludhaven with Dick in this brutal cycle that he slowly gets used to and stockholm'd into even liking it. Dick isn't so bad, once he gets used to the quirks of their unbalanced 'relationship'. the sex is even something he can adjust to as well. not quite a happy ending but one that sits in this realistic grey area that becomes Tim's life.

i will write this, eventually, but i don't know if i'll get to it before DickTim Week ends so by posting the idea i'm essentially putting it out into the world so the peer pressure holds me accountable. i just. really like the potential of making Hades/Persephone AUs as fucked up as they can be simply by adhering to the source material and making it a raw story of being stolen away and forced to like this new home you didn't ask for.

also a less fleshed-out aspect of this idea i have ties into Persephone becoming the Queen of the Underworld when she's taken and how the transition from Kore to Persephone could be reflected in Tim. how he makes the best of the worst situation and becomes something far more dangerous and dark when he's in Bludhaven, possibly takes on a new vigilante name/identity and leans into the worst quirks of his personality he tries to tamper because there's no point in not going full tilt Obsessively Weird if he has no choice anyway and it being one small way he takes back his autonomy, and that inevitably making Dick *more* into him, because he gets to see Tim finally just. let loose.

How would you describe their personality?

Despite being rather high energy, Daedra can also be rather aloof. She is definitely the kind who would prefer to do nothing and she only gets up to do things because something compels her to do things. She also very much wants to be pampered and spoiled and treated like a princess, but she doesn't let just anyone spoil her. No, no, her lovers have to earn the right to spoil her and she does not make it easy.

Daedra is also very defiant and does not like being told what to do. If anybody tries to tell her what to do she will either do the exact opposite of what she is told, or do it with maliciousness so no one would ever want to ask her to do it again. If anyone ever tries to presume authority over her, she will test it over and over and over. The only person she has ever willingly and immediately allowed to command her was Minthara (but even then there are still some moments where Daedra challenges Minthara's authority). But, hehehe, sometimes Daedra likes being forced to submit...

What brings your character joy?

She does enjoy hunting and killing, and tannery helps keep her mind calm and relaxed. She does enjoy monster hunts as well and loves taking monster hunting quests when they become available. She likes exploding things and if there is a bomb in her immediate vicinity, she will try to blow it up (no, she does not take in any consideration that she might get blown up herself). Daedra also thrives in the most chaotic of situations, regardless of if she brought them upon herself. She also enjoys cuddling with people, both romantically and platonically. She adores touching and being touched as physical touch is her love language.

What does your character strongly dislike?

As kind of mentioned previously, she really does not like being told what to do. To go further into it, she does not like a lot of expectations being placed upon her, especially if it is one that she feels she cannot meet. She does not like being told who she is supposed to be and she wants to be her own person and not restrict herself to such expectations. If there is anybody who's opinion matters to her, she begins to fear disappointing them because she fears not being able to live up to their expectations, and so she would prefer none be placed upon her. Otherwise, she will fight against them.

Daedra also does not like being called or treated as if she is stupid. She is already very well aware of her intellectual disability and knows how it holds her back. She doesn't want to be talked down to as if she isn't already aware of it or treated like a child. She is still self sufficient, even if there are some things she needs additional help with. And, for the love of the gods, do not call her stupid. My little babygurl will burst out into a fountain of tears and breakdown and then runaway. And she is so good at hiding, you'd never be able to find her. Once she is out of your sight, good luck. She can turn invisible and if she doesn't want to be found, she won't. (Or she might kill you on the spot, depends on the tone of your voice and the context).

Is your OC scared of anything?

Daedra is scared of losing control of her urges and unintentionally harming the people that she loves. She is constantly plagued with images and nightmares of her companions and she hears voices telling her to violently harm them. She is terrified that she will accidentally hurt them, or that her impulses will get the best of her and she won't be able to stop if she were to ever give in.

What is their alignment?

I would say that, for the most part, Daedra is chaotic neutral. But, I don't like shoving characters into strict boxes. So, Daedra's alignment kinda swings in the bottom right corner from chaotic neutral - chaotic evil - neutral evil. And this all varies depending on the situation she finds herself in. The lobotomy also has a massive impact on her alignment as well as being relieved from the urge once Bhaal murks her.

Daedra doesn't like to follow the rules and is much more likely to break them when she finds them to be convenient. She isn't incapable of doing good things, but it isn't her first inclination and she has to have a very very very worthwhile reason to do good stuff and she doesn't do anything out of the goodness of her own heart. She is much more likely to default to the more evil options to solve her problems (murder, theft, bribery, extortion, intimidation, torture, etc). She is much more selfish than selfless, but will be selfless and sacrifice anything for her friends and lovers (even her own life if necessary).

With how many people I've seen play Mouthwashing and genuinely have no idea what's happening at the beginning, trying in earnest to not hit the asteroid, it's very funny to imagine an alternate retelling of events where Jimmy is behaving in a similar way and he simply just has zero clue about what he's doing. He hits the button to disengage autopilot but not out of malicious intent, he's just really stupid.

the only two “versions”. are broadway and 92sies. we do like actually know that right. because those are two different plot lines with different events and entirely different songs.

west end? not a version. it’s a production. it’s new staging and orchestrations which is different for us, and certainly fresh character interpretation, but at the end of the day that’s what it is— interpretation.

so the “livesies and west end are diff versions” (which already doesn’t make sense because then wouldn’t bway and tour be slightly different as well with that argument) is kind of. just. a weird separation in the name of—speaking as a writer here—maybe “keeping the work we already have”. like oh i wrote racer this way but now he’s this way.

guess what! doesn’t matter. it’s a character. there’s no- like no version besides bway script and 92sies script. what you draw character from are the actual words spoken- and yeah, staging will influence you bc if it doesn’t that’s weird, but it’s not a different character. are we. do you get me.

mainly my worry is othering, and personally this fandom cannot afford to do that w/ michael’s jack kelly, because then i’ll become violent and no one wants that :/ a new person playing jack doesn’t make it an other, different jack it just makes it yet another millionth interpretation of jack. yk. like do we get what i’m saying here

Fanfic/fancomic idea I just thought of while watching SpongeBob clips:

Semi-early on in Rocket and Groot knowing each-other/working together, Groot sees Rocket’s cybernetics for the first time. Maybe it’s a similar moment to when Quill first saw them in the prison scene in Vol.1, maybe it was during a particularly intense battle with a bounty and Rocket gets the back of his shirt torn up exposing his back but just yells at Groot to focus on beating the other guy etc.

Whatever the case, Groot sees Rocket’s cybernetics and, not yet fully understanding the concept of cyborgs or anything, tries asking Rocket about them later. But Rocket just keeps either trying to deflect and change the subject or just tells Groot to shut it and quit bugging him about it.

So Groot, having no context or idea of Rockets trauma and everything, starts thinking and filling in the blanks in his own way. And after putting together:

The metal things on rockets body

His habit of stealing peoples robotic prosthetics, batteries and other electronics

The fact Rocket hates taking baths and (seemingly) most liquids apart from alcohol

The fact Rocket never laughs at Groots jokes

And the fact he never shows any genuine emotion other than rage or cockiness

Groot comes to the Galaxy shattering realisation that Rocket is, in fact… A ROBOT.

Aside from the intital internal screaming he has about everything making so much more sense now, Groot does find it strange how mammalian Rocket looks. But then Groot figures, since they have previously caught robot bounties who tried (and failed) to pass themselves as organics by wearing artificial skin, Rocket’s probably doing the same thing.

And oh no, maybe that’s why he was so defensive before about those metal parts of him showing?? Maybe he’s been discriminated against for being a robot and is trying to pass himself off as an organic animal to protect himself? And/or he has a deep seeded internalised robot phobia???? And Groot trying to push him about it made it worse?!??!??

So Groot, after realising the “truth”, tries to be more supportive of rocket and him being a robot. He doesn’t directly confront Rocket or try to press him on it. Since he tried that before and fails and he’s figured out it’s a sensitive subject for rocket. But Groot does his research on robots and tries to figure out what make and model rocket is (with very few results) so he can better look after him incase he malfunctions or something, he makes sure to “borrow” extra batteries and oil canisters when ever they’re at a place with electronics because he figures that’s what he really uses for sustenance instead of all the burgers and junk food he eats in front of Groot for (what he thinks is) the sake of appearance, tries to stop him from getting wet whenever it rains or they visit a mostly water-covered planet, calls Rocket out if/whenever he makes crude comments about other robots because (internally) Groot draws the line at Rocket taking his own issues about being a robot out on his fellow robots etc etc. All because Groot doesn’t care what Rocket is and just wants his best friend to be happy and feel safe and accepted as he is. As well as for him to trust Groot enough to come out in his own time when he feels ready.

Meanwhile Rocket is just. Completely baffled by Groot acting so weird around him all the sudden and doing all this. And no idea Groot thinks he’s a robot because of his cybernetics. Eventually culminating when things escalate out of hand and Groot cutting to the chase, gently telling rocket he knows he’s a robot and that he doesn’t have to be afraid of hiding it anymore because Groot still cares about him no matter what.

…And rocket, slightly less gently, telling Groot that goD FLARKIN DAMNIT GROOT!!! IM NOT A GODDAMN ROBOT YOU STUPID MOLDY OVERGROWN PEICE OF CRAP TWIG!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Basically, it’s the Krab Borg episode of SpongeBob if SpongeBob tried being a supportive robot ally to Mr.Krabs instead of jumping him in his office with Squidward.
