Morning Glory
Disclaimer: This is about 1.5k words, and its not very detailed in terms of exposition and what not because this HAD TO BE 1.5k words at the most… It also had to have some other criteria I wasnt in control of, so if some things seem weird, then thats mainly the issue. Other than that, yeah! OH ALSO THIS IS NOT FREE USE! DO NOT LIKE COPY AND PASTE MY WORK ANYWHERE! LIKE SRS… DONT DO THAT! Reblogs r allowed ofc but NOT REPOSTS!!!
TW: Rotten Food, violence, crying, angst, sad-ish ending, overwhelming hunger, starvation. Uh… Yeah!
Tumblr media
In the dark, murky air of the city, a small ray of light shone through the dark clouds of acid. There was a girl, in the middle of a patch of green grass with a single morning glory resting in her palm. The area rested between two tall, ruinous buildings- All with dirt stains and signs of decay on the sides of them. However, contrary to what may have been thought originally, those two tall buildings didn’t deprave the sight of any of the sight’s ethereal beauty. The radiant, warm waves that graced the girl's muddied skin as she held the petals between her fingers looked heartwarming at first glance. But upon further inspection, a shawl carrying an absurd amount of fruit lay lifeless upon the green ground, and food sprawled out of it haphazardly. The same palms carrying that morning glory were calloused, cut, and bruised. Her countenance was one of an innocent child, forced to pluck the last of her innocence, and an expression of mortification took over her features. Furrowed eyebrows, pursed lips, and faucet eyes leaked onto the puny petals of the violet flower.
“No.” She choked. “No. I don’t want to do this anymore, Xeno.” She repeated, and slowly a dark figure revealed itself from the shadows. It was a boy, a boy with a disappointed expression, and disheveled, brown hair. She looked the same, they were twins.
“Lyla-” She quickly cut him off.
“No. I don’t want to steal from people anymore.” She was stubborn, insistent, in Xeno’s eyes. But in her own mind, she acted on her conflicted emotions.
Xeno stepped closer towards her, he placed his hands on her shoulders carefully, as if she was about to run off at any moment. “Look, it’s unscrupulous. I know. But we’d suffer a greater fate than the consequences of defying moral scruples.” Xeno could tell. She was a penitent girl, more than he ever was. Her heart pounded harder than his did, she questioned her actions far more.
He took her hand into his and laid it on her stomach. He looked up at her, gauging her curious reaction. After a moment, a rumble came from her belly, and she instinctively swatted his hands away in favor of clutching her stomach in pain. She groaned as he watched in pity. “Hunger. Hunger is too cruel of a fate to subject ourselves to. A method of torture designed to subjugate people to gluttony’s gaze…” He looked down at Lyla sadly, “We ourselves couldn't possibly escape it. Not as long as the war between the Xeniathans and the Aistranians continues.”
Lyla wept on the ground, as her stomach convulsed and contracted within her body, yelling- screaming for sustenance. From the corner of her eye, she caught a glimpse of the stolen apple and reached for it, but Xeno took it in his hands. She whipped her head up at him with bloodshot eyes.
“I’m sorry Lyla, but this is the world we live in. Our mother and father couldn’t care enough to keep us, so now we have to live the best we can. Morality is unattainable to the weak.” He dropped the apple in front of her, to which she immediately darted towards it. She took it in both hands and sunk her teeth deep inside the flesh, feeling the juices squirm between her teeth and the sour taste stained her tongue. It went bad long ago. But it was the best they had. Disregarding the taste, she took bite after bite, swallowing the rotten flesh without care for what she may contract. She was a cannibal. To eat at the cost of others, to eat without a care for anyone else. To eat.
She cried as she bit into the apple, and Xeno sat down next to her on the grassy field, taking a similar apple, and eating it as well. Although they might have eaten together, they were more separate than ever.
~~~
A week later, the two siblings emerged from the harrowing darkness of the two buildings, into the space of light between them. Lyla was quieter than normal, and Xeno was as per usual during that time. They stole and fought to stay alive. As they always did. But the air was different this time. The sound of whirring from aerial vehicles in the distance was far more prominent now. Sounds of chatter and robotic voices echoed throughout the alleys, and neon lights illuminated the dark clouds above. There was excitement in the air, and excitement was present in the erratic movements of one of the siblings, running over to the patch and picking up the wilted morning glory in his palms.
“Lyla, the war! The Xeniathans are coming to Aistrania! We’ll finally be saved from their despotism, we’ll be free!” But in the other sibling, that excitement was not reciprocated. Lyla had a blank expression pointed directly at the morning glory. Xeno was shocked. “What is it, Lyla? Why aren’t you saying anything? We’re saved! Once the Xeniathans come to Aistrania, once they conquer our land, we’ll have as much food as we please! Oh, why won’t you respond?”
Lyla could only stand there, as the whirring drones zoomed past them. Xeno looked back at her with a confused expression on his face. “Was it what I said yesterday? Lyla, we wont ever be hungry again. We’ll find a foster home, you and me, together. We won't need to steal or eat rotten things. As soon as the Xeniathans arrive-”
“-How could you be so sure?” Lyla interjected. The light that once accompanied her eyes was replaced by dullness, like murky clouds fogging her vision. Xeno furrowed his bushy eyebrows with a frown.
“What’s gotten into you? You’ve been silent, Lyla. We’re to be saved-”
“-Saved? How can you be so sure that the Xeniathans won’t take our food instead? Don’t you, a boy so knowledgeable about how the world works, know that one of the main hardships of a traveling military is food supply?” Her eyes darkened. “There isn’t food anywhere, Xeno. And the Xeniathans were never known as being the most… Scrupulous. But of course, they do it to survive.”
“LYLA!” Xeno screamed. However, it could barely be heard from outside the alleyway. People were excited. They were frantically excited. Aerial buses, vehicles, and yells of the commonplace echoed through the entire thoroughfare, only sparing their dark alleyway. Xeno grabbed Lyla harshly by the shoulders. He was angry. “Lyla? Why are you being so pessimistic? What has incited this change in you?”
Lyla seemed unfazed by the way she was treated, and only brushed his hands off of her with a sigh. “Hunger, Xeno. I’m hungry. I’m so hungry. I can’t think of anything else anymore.”
Suddenly, Xeno tackled Lyla to the hard floor, to which both of their heads banged together. Xeno held Lyla down as she thrashed, but she soon relaxed once she felt the first few drops of water land on her cheeks.
“Is it raining, Xeno?” He bit his lip as she shook her head. “No, no it’s not. What’s the matter, Xeno? What is it?”
Xeno choked back a sob, “I’m sorry, Lyla.” Lowering his head in shame. “I’m sorry I want to stay. On an island where not even our national barriers are maintained properly, watched over with outdated A.I. software. With the way our country has been isolated for millennia, we’ve regressed, and we lack the proper funding to create ports or landing pads for imports- for food. I’m sorry we lack the proper technology to communicate from our years of isolation with the overworld. I’m sorry that now that we finally did, I prevented us from leaving. I don’t want to leave, Lyla. I'm sorry. I’m sorry, Lyla.”
Lyla’s own tears began dripping from her eyes. She shook with the same vigor that Xeno apologized. “It isn’t your fault, Xeno. It isn’t our fault that Aistrania failed us.” She cried, getting up and cradling Xeno in her thin, frail, weak arms. “If Aistrania failed us, we shall leave. There is no hope for us here.” She gazed up at the imposing, foggy sky with contempt. “The morning glory has left us long ago, and the apple has since tainted our souls.”
Xeno’s stomach rumbled unceremoniously, only causing him to weep harder. She slowly stood him up and walked with him out of the alleyway, and into the street. They were pushed and shoved, as people erratically rushed to the city’s exit.
They ran to a large, whirring, aerial ship, which rumbled loudly. The last boarding call. “The last ship to Xeniathan is leaving, and we will board it.” Xeno shook his head violently, and she felt a pang within her heart clutching it mournfully. Despite what Xeno wished, they had no choice. “Wave goodbye to Aistrania, in hopes of a piping, hot dinner.” And so, with her rueful brother, they boarded the ship, and left their world behind.
