I just watched the recent episode of Metal Family, and I fucking love it. Especially the casual positive representaion of apophenia. I was shocked to see that he has this and wanted to learn more about it and where else it was mentioned in the show. And a lot of the jokes from earlier episodes are a lot funnier with this revilation too. I also want to talk about some theories and discussion points as well.

Disclaimer: I do not have apophenia or any schizophernic/hallusinative disorders nor do I know anyone with them. So I'm looking at this from the perspective of soneone who doens't experiance this. I would be intrested to hear form those who dose experiance it. Also my thoughts are scattered and dyslexic so sorry about that.

"This deck must be cursed. When you're done with it, I'm fucking burning it."

"In interested in checking her final signs of paranoid psychosis." Here he's mildly concerned for his wife's mental state after suspecting the cards are cursed.

"He's laughing at me. Holding a grimis of pain but actually smiling inside." Glam had to deal with paraoid behavier before, and wants to get it checked as soon as possible.

"Kids, light the bonfire." Only for him to come to the same conclusion and burn the deck with the kids. Lol.

"Well our history teacher has gone nuts today seeing creatures." Dee trying to make the teacher less believeable by claiming that he's gone nuts. Given the way Dee talks about this, I don't think he knows that his dad has apophenia. And I think it would be a little disheartening to hear his son talk about hallusinations like this.

[After a breif look of shock] "Okey." But Glam is unphased by this. Probably because the possibility that his son is being treated unfairly by his teachers take priority.

"Ah, Dee told me that you might have hallucinations. I can recommend you excellent meds for those." This tells me that he specifically experiances hallusinations. I know Liv explained her hallusinations in detail and we can deduct that Glam has them too, but for him to bring up that he knows good meds for hallusinations is just another neet detail.

"And a giant evil skull on the entire wall." The fact that Liv (Lif?) sees a skull on the wall where nobody else can. Also the wall are detailedly shaded too. I suspect that it was purposfully shaded this episode so that even though we couldn't see the faces she sees, we could understand where she's coming form because if you sqint, you could see where she could have gotten that idea.

"Ah I think I get it. It's Apophenia." And Glam imediately clocks it as apophenia. The fact he turned to his wife and said this. Plus the fact she just rolls her eyes and shruggs. I have a feeling he's told her about this before and given his earlier statment about checking her for paranoid psycosis, they've had this conversation before.

"Oh man, I think I forgot to take my pill. Where are they?" "[cencored name of medication]." "Uh, yeah." "2mg right?" "Uh... yeah." "I think I have some." I brushed off him clocking the apophenia as just Glam being his normal smartypants self, but the fact that he has the exact meds as her.

And given the boys' mild shocked reaction, I would say that this is obviously not their medication and given Victoria's reaction as well. They're not hers either. Plus I don't think Glam would willingly give out other people's medication without their permission considering that you're not supposed to give other people your own medication (though plenty of those who share the same perscription share meds all the time. I speak form experiance with my adderall).

"And Dee, about this Liv." I suspect that it's the usual "my son has a crush on a girl, so I must give him the talk" kind of talk, but other people in the comments suspect that he might be talking about her apophenia. Though I suspect that if he were to be talking about that, he'd tell both Dee and Heavy since they're both her friends.

"You need a perscription for those. It's cool that your dad found some for me."

"Will it be rough if you forget to take the pills?" Dee's reaction is one of mild confusion and curiosity for her disorder. But I suspect that his slight moment of looking slightly down right after she mentioned that you need a perscription makes me suspect he's picking up on something here.

"Ah, well you know anxiety starts. Agression..." His first moment of shock and a steady nervious tapping. Either realizing his crush has a pretty serious mental disorder or the fact his dad has shown some agression. We don't see Glam outwordly showing his anxiety, but it's not out of the quesiton given how Glam grew up.

"Apophenia gets stronger..." Here his eyes start darting around. Which could be him drawing parallells between his dad and Liv.

"and I see all sorts of faces around me. I can hear a monster on the ceiling. A skull on the table cloth. Some weirdo lerking through the window." "Ah-hem." Obviously Dee becoming uncomfortable with this and changes the subject. I also suspect that Dee has some ableism going on too, as he did say his teacher was nuts and was seeing creatures as a way to make his teacher sound crazy and unbelieveable. And here he's confronted with the fact that someone he likes has the exact disorder that causes "seeing creatures" and that he lives with someone who has this disorder. And there might be a possiblity that Dee could be questioning if he might have this himself, given that a lot of mental disorders are genetic and can be passed down. And given the fact he's most like his father, this revelation could also be uncomfortable.

Also the party decorations being scarry looking faces I think is an intrestting background detail. Obviously because the Metal Family is an edgy family and likes their edgy shit. I suspect Heavy likes scarry things the most considering it's his party. But the fact that she's talking about seeing scarry faces around her makes the party decorations more noticeable.

Dear Fellow Black Tapes Fans,

Some things never really leave you.

I drive 2-3 hours every day, so I go through a lot of audio media. I started listening to a new book one night, and as I'm driving home though the late fall darkness I hear:

Apophenia

My eye twitches.

Apophenic

Twitch.

And then a few minutes later

Apophenia

To which I yell:

Shut up, Richard!

In my empty car.

The old Black Tapes scars are never really gone, I suppose.

But if you want a book that will let you imagine a better ending than the one we got, one where Alex and Strand live a happy life gently debunking the hell out of things while holding up a mirror in which humanity can examine their own bullshit, boy oh boy do I have a recommendation for you!

What do you think about the catholic 'miracles' of fatima, the prophecies, the apparitions of the virgin Mary, miracle of the sun and whatnot, do you think that there's any authenticity to it?

No.

And we know that they're not.

Take note here that they wanted to punish someone for finding truth. They wanted to worship a lie without the intrusion of the truth. They weren't disappointed that it wasn't true, they were angry at the person who figured out that it wasn't. They didn't want to know, they wanted to believe. This is what "faith" means.

If the sun had "danced" in the sky at Fátima, it would have been visible at more than one specific location to only a minority of people of Earth, who were true believers and told contradictory stories anyway.

Prophecies are fantastically easy to fulfil. Particularly when they're vague, unverifiable, or the events predicted are inevitable, such as wars, diseases or the political rise of good and bad leaders. Here's an example all three:

If you make enough predictions, some are statistically going to land, or may even be self-fulfilling (the act of predicting it encourages people to make it happen).

It's Nostradamus' entire schtick. If we're keeping score Nostradamus is ahead of Xianity. Especially since Xianity's most important prophecy - the return of Jesus - has already been falsified.

Mark 9:1

And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power.

Matthew 16:28

Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.

They never account for their history of "misses," yet still expect to be treated as reliable.

Importantly, and hopefully obviously, we don't have to be able to explain these events otherwise in order to reject them as "miracles." It's not up to us to disprove what has not been proven. "You can't explain it, therefore god" is not just an argument from ignorance, it's a contradiction: "you can't explain it, therefore it's explained" is self-refuting. The only thing you can say about an unexplained thing is that it's unexplained. And it's useless to claim that people who weren't there and had no access to the events can't explain a thing.

We can insert anything into that gap. For example, it's no less justified to assert that the Miracle of the Sun was the evil lord Xenu deploying mind-control programming to those at Fátima to be his guards in the afterlife. Prove that this isn't true.

They must be able to make the case that the only, or most likely, explanation is the the laws of the physical universe were violated, specifically by their preferred god. And to do that, they must be able to justify why other more mundane explanations - or simply "we don't know" - are either false or less likely. And most of the faithful couldn't even name a single other explanation - and won't accept the intellectually honest "we don't know."

One of the biggest reasons of all to remain skeptical of human claims of miracles and prophecies isn't what we don't know about those miracles, gods and virgin mothers, but what we do know about humans themselves.

We're pattern-seeking creatures, and meaning-making organisms. It's been an advantage in our evolution, but it also makes us unreliable, as we're prone to finding meaning or making connections that aren't there.

This is not an elephant. This is not Mother Teresa.

So the question becomes, what's more likely: an unverified woman who supposedly became divinely pregnant without having sex, giving birth to a man who was killed, came back to life and flew up into the sky is communicating through a vague outline of herself on a wall under a freeway, or humans see what they're motivated to see among millions of stains of various types and causes?

Isn't it odd that we never hear about the millions of stains that aren't in the shape of the Virgin Mary if you squint and know what to look for? If this stain had appeared on a wall in South America or Japan 1000 years ago, who would they have interpreted it as? Would they have even given it a second glance? If you have to already know about Mary to see Mary in it, how is it a "miracle"?

It's really unfortunate that the lord of all creation, who made everything, who got the physics of the universe, the functioning of human bodies, the position of the Earth in the solar system just so, who spoke directly to people and made bargains, covenants and plans directly with humans - yet somehow thought the Earth was flat, stars are tiny lights, didn't know about the Americas or Australia, or how rain works - is now relegated to faint whispering through vague smears on walls, dripping toilet water through human statues, appearing on toast and dog's butt's, and giving out predictions through crazy people and liars.
