now that we've officially found Subways of Your Mind by FEX, we need to make the most of it. i propose we invent a new slang term.

FEX itself is a german slang term from the 80s, roughly translating to Nerd or Zealot, and specifically refers to someone who's such a fan they become completely obsessed. the modern term for this in english is Hyperfixation.

this is hilarious, given how long we ourselves have obsessed over and searched for the song. its like saying "hi folks who've been trying to uncover our song for literal decades! our band's name is Megafan-"

THEREFOR. i propose the term Fexing. when someone is truly transfixed, in love, or obsessed with a work of art, we "Find it very Fexing."

:3 this came to me in a dream, imagining a post apocalypse setting where art preservationists refer to this song when talking about lost media.

The worldbuilding of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is so f*cking good and so casual.

A thousand years ago, there was a global nuclear war dubbed "The 7 Days of Fire" in which nuclear destruction covered the world and threw humanity back into the Iron Age. In present day, a toxic jungle covers most of the landmass with humans literally being marginalized and pushed to the edge of the map. Within the jungle lives giant peaceful insects that will violently defend their home, meaning if you chop down a tree, they will bulldoze your village in minutes. So it's either die slowly from the toxins in the jungle or die violently but quickly by insect stampede. The result is that humanity is endangered and live in isolated tribes ranging from pacifistic to militaristic. Our heroine Nausicaa lives in a Valley of the Wind where the constant air flow keeps the toxic jungle from seeding there. At the end of the 1st act, Nausicaa reveals that she's been growing plants from the toxic jungle in clean water & soil, rendering them safe for humans. This strongly implies that the Toxic Jungle was bioengineered to be a giant filtration system, cleansing the air, water, & soil of the pollution caused by radioactive fallout; the insects are meant to protect the plants so the jungle can do its job. The problem is that it's been 1,000 years, the jungle still isn't done, and humanity can't wait another century let alone millennium. The rest of humanity isn't fortunate enough to live in a valley of wind so they'll be killed by the encroaching jungle long before the jungle finishes its purification.

A Quiet Place: Day One

I've seen all three of the "Quiet Place" films, and while I don't remember much of the first two my instinct is to say that "Day One" is the best of the lot. It's certainly the bleakest. I appreciate post-apocalyptic films that focus on characters managing the new world order (Nausicaä / Mad Max) instead of showing characters trying to put the world to rights (I Am Legend). The two leads are great. I expected that from Lupita Nyong'o but Joseph Quinn was very much her equal. It was actually his character that had my attention as the movie progressed. Can he be trusted? Why is he doing the things he's doing? What does it say about me that when I see simple kindness and decency in a stranger that my suspicions rise and I start surveying the landscape for a melee weapon? Joseph Quinn's traumatized facial expressions made for some of the most memorable images of the film. It's rare to see a man terrified without screaming, demolished but still functioning. It reminded me of David Johnson's performance in "Alien: Romulus." Not because Johnson's character was terrified, but because 99% of said performance came entirely from his face and communicated more any amount of dialog could. I also want to give props for the 99 minute runtime. That may sound like a backhanded compliment but it isn't. The secret to making a good movie is knowing exactly what kind of movie you should be making, and these filmmakers understood that. That's an accomplishment.

Trip for two (Part 3)

Cutting down trees is often a great way to vent frustration. This is how Michael copes with his grief over his parents. He thinks about the past and also about the future… Perhaps Peter will be a good partner for him… But first he would like to get to know everything new even better.

Michael came back with a big load of firewood. "Oh crap, now I've dropped something…" / "Don't move, otherwise you'll really fall on your face and I'll have to take you home before our trip has really started" / "Oh man, thanks, I shouldn't have carried so much…".

The boys found the odd tree stump in the area. Witnesses to the time when people gathered wood to rebuild their houses. "Xander probably thinks I'll make a fire with a piece of wood and a branch, zz"/ "I still had the lighter from my dad"/ "yeah, it's much easier.". A old blanket was placed in front of the tent so that they wouldn't walk in with dirty feet.

When the work was done, they sat down together around the campfire. Michael looked into the flames for a few minutes while Peter watched him. At some point, Michael noticed and gave him a smile. "Thanks…"/ "For what?"/ "That you're doing this with me… I don't think Ethan felt like doing it, he's rather be at home all the time helping his mother with organizational things". Peter poked at the firewood for a moment and smiled back. "I promised you."

"I hope you didn't just come here out of pity for me…"/ "Bullshit, Micha, I'm here because I want to be here, okay? Man, our house is gone and we more or less live in a bunker with only one room above it, where we spend most of our time, at least when we're at home… And it's really boring…"/ "I can imagine. I'd rather have my own room again too".

"Wouldn't you have the space for it upstairs?"/ "No, not really. It couldn't be rebuilt according to the original floor plan. You had to rebuild everything provisionally… But one day… I want to build my own house. It doesn't have to be huge, but… I want to be able to say I've done it, it's mine"/ "I can understand that."

"I think I'll do it that way too" / "well, we could… do it together". Michael didn't look at him, but had his eyes fixed on the flames again. It was almost as if he was afraid of the answer. "O.k., why not"/ "yes? I mean… O.k…."/ "hnhn. School's about to start again here, what do you think about it?"

Michael shrugged his shoulders. "In principle, a good thing… At least for the younger ones…"/ "hehe, you quickly get used to not having any more lessons, don't you? But hey, at least it gives us a chance to graduate after all"/ "and who's going to teach us for the last year?"/ "Rumor has it that it's either Mrs. Landgraab or her husband"/ "fff, no thanks, neither one, they're not good teachers"

"No, that's true. And if you could choose, who would teach us?". Michael shrugged his shoulders again. " I don't care, I can actually do without a certificate. .There is no one left who could be proud of me…."/ "hey, that's not true.". Michael looked down sadly for a moment, because now he was thinking about his mother again, who would probably have been bursting with pride if her son had come home with a good certificate. He shook himself a little and rubbed his arms…. "Are you cold?"/ "A little…".

Peter went to his backpack and took out the warm jackets. These were also both his, so he could confidently hand over the second one. "It's a bit lined, I hope you get warm quickly"/ "hnhn, you look after me like I'm a child"/ "is that what you think? Hey, I just want you to be okay, ok?". Michael sighed a little as he looked at him "h-hh, I know… thanks"/ "didn't you want to catch a rabbit?"/ "Tomorrow morning, not today".

"Besides, what do you mean you wouldn't make anyone proud? I think it would be great if the two of us could at least hold something like a certificate in our hands. Then we could leave here and start again somewhere else"/ "would you really leave with me? You know I won't leave my sister alone"/ "then we'll wait until she's 18, OK?"/ "hnhn… OK. But now I'm hungry". Peter grinned and hugged him tightly again. Gradually, Michael got used to these loving touches, they made him feel safe.

Some sketches of angels from my different worldbuilding projects.

At the top, the something like screaming, dying fire living on the wind is an Angel from the World of Light and Darkness, the fallen Light-born of the stars. They are eternally suffering and eternally living tragedies.

To the left, the something made of ink and voices and dreams is an Angel of the Songbird of the Layered Earth, someone who has lost themselves to the allure of everlasting creation.

To the right, the something cursed with sight beyond the broken sky is an Angel of Æther (not Aether, Æther) of a different part of the Layered Earth, someone who carries a fragment of the crazed, invading magic in their eyes.

I have never seen a ton of wildfire smoke until this year. Lile I didn't know there was a weather condition on my weather app called smoke. And being able to look directly at the sun because the light got so diffused is a trip.

I'm also surprised with how fast it can set in. Like 15 minutes in a shop, I go outside and I smell it and just see this grayish tinted fog outside.

The lighting outside is weird as well. Almost like a half cloud cover, but it's still bright? It's the golden hour but at 12 noon. And also the moon just becomes red now.

I think a lot of people are really experiencing it for the first time this year, unfortunately. There's been some weird weather/wind patterns this summer in general and I think it's being blown farther than normal (in addition to being a worse fire season that usual in general.) So my general perception with social media is that many people are baffled because they've never seen this happen before where they live.
