This is an appreciation post for Nausicaa, Princess of Phaeacia.
Intelligent and insightful (recognised the political implications of bringing Odysseus home and came up with a plan that would get him help without sparking gossip and damaging her reputation)
Hard working and with integrity (at a tiny bit of prompting from Athena dragged out all the washing in the house to do, for her whole family)
Brave (stood her ground when fully naked, shipwrecked Odysseus emerged from the bushes, is compared to Artemis by both narrator and Odysseus)
A leader (directed her maids, calmed them down after they all--understandably--ran away from Odysseus)
Ambitious (recognised Odysseus' status after he got cleaned up and a godly glowup, decided that was the kind of guy she wanted to marry)
Playful and has a social life (I LOVE that we learn she's close friends with a local captain's daughter, and that we see her playing catch with her maids)
In general she's a surpsingly well rounded character with a neat wee arc of unrequited love, but no grudge and I care about her deeply

Nausicaä -- Ladybug
Tumblr media
Heyo!
Welp, I feel like more doing some Studio Ghibli art, so I drew Nausicaä with a ladybug with two spring tulips (where the atmosphere is not toxic :)).
I have loved this movie since getting this (when trying to get Ponyo with absolutely no luck lol) :3, and didn't even know this movie was made BEFORE Studio Ghibli was founded ^^
I did this last night, and was too lazy to color the background ^^
What y'all think?

Shovel Talk?
(there’s one suitor left in the the palace, but he’s not there for the Queen of Ithaca)
Penelope had long since fallen asleep as Telemachus sat silently outside her door, not quite able to break the habit yet. Odysseus had crept out of the room as soon as his wife had fallen asleep despite his intense want to stay near her. Still, he had to make sure the palace had been cleansed of the suitors.
Suddenly he heard heavy breathing coming from Telemachus’s chambers. Telemachus’s chambers that were supposed to be empty. He tightly gripped his sword and threw the door open, watching as an unfamiliar young man stumbled back, looking up at him with wide eyes.
“Are you a suitor?” Odysseus asked flatly, adjusting his hold on the sword.
“Yes,” the young man said. “But it’s not what you think, I’m not-”
“Stop.” He said. “What’s your name?”
The young man sputtered a bit before finally saying, “Nausicaas.”
“Nausicaas… you should have lied.”
“No…” Nausicaas took a few steps back as the king walked towards him with a raised sword. “No, it’s- it’s not what you think! I’m here for Telemachus!”
“You idiot…” Odysseus shook his head. “Did you see what happened to the rest of the suitors who tried to hurt my son?” He pressed the sword against the young man’s neck. “This is where it ends. With your death, my family is safe. Do you understand that?”
His eyes widened as he stared right into the king’s burning red eyes, alight. In what Nausicaas assumed would be his last moment, he squeezed his eyes shut and yelled, “Sir, I’m in love with your son!”
There was no pain, no sharpness of the blade, but the feeling of it against his neck didn’t leave. Nausicaas didn’t dare open his eyes.
“What?”
He opened one eye, catching sight of Odysseus’s confusion. “I am a suitor… for your son. I- I arrived here this morning to… to ask the Queen for her blessing to marry the prince… a-and now that you’re here I can, well… would it be okay if I proposed to your son?”
Odysseus stepped back, letting his sword fall to his side. He looked like he was sizing the young man up. “Where did you come from?”
“Sparta, sir. The Queen’s family in Sparta is close friends with my own.”
The king seemed to contemplate this for a moment. “You say you love my son?” Nausicaas nodded eagerly. It was almost endearing. “How much?”
The young man’s expression finally hardened into something a lot more Spartan than it had looked before. “I would end worlds for him, sir. I would renounce my name, my rank, my home—I would be of Ithaca only, Sparta be damned.” His eyes suddenly wandered to a spot over Odysseus’s shoulder, softening as a smile tugged his lips.
The king turned around to see his son in the doorway. “Telemachus.”
“Mother woke up,” he said, his voice distracted. “She had a fit when you weren’t next to her.”
Odysseus smiled, then turned back to look at Nausicaas. He held his arms out, warm and inviting, and enveloped the young man. “Thank you,” Nausicaas uttered, returning the hug as if it were a handshake, strong and unwavering.
“Be true.” Odysseus said, then lowered his voice. “And if you even think about hurting my family, I will dismember you and feed what’s left of you to what little sirens managed to escape my crew and I.” The boy tensed up in his arms and Odysseus smiled. “That is, if Penelope doesn’t get to you first.”
He felt the young man nod and let go, stepping back. The king stood in wait. Nausicaas’s lips formed a small “oh,” then walked past him to face Telemachus. “Telemachus, Prince of Ithaca…”
“Nausicaas,” the prince said, grabbing the young warrior’s hand and pulling him closer with a grin Odysseus recognized from his days trying his hardest to win Penelope’s attention. “Why so formal?”
A grin tugged at his lips. “Because this is important. I love you, Telemachus. I will always love you. If there is a life after this one, I will love you in that one too. Would you join me in declaring this love to the gods?"
Telemachus smiled and leaned forward to kiss Nausicass. "It only took you three years to ask."
"Is..." He said tentatively, "Is that a yes?"
Odysseus shook his head and made for the doorway, patting Nausicaas on the back before leaving. "Welcome to the family."

Years ago, I was inspired by a combination of my favorite Japanese print artist + the great Studio Ghibli documentary The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness to create half a dozen prints mashing up half a dozen films from Hayao Miyazaki's filmography.
More recently, I tackled another 5 of Miyazaki's films + a tribute to the studio itself, resulting in the dozen designs you see here.
Prints are available here and ship worldwide!

The Search for a Solarpunk Anime
Tumblr media
Allow me to think aloud for a moment. Because I noticed something.
Whenever people ask for movie recommendations or anime recommendations for Solarpunk, a movie that often gets named is Netflix's Bubble. And on one hand... I get it. The aesthetic of the movie is more Cozy Apocalypse than Solarpunk (aka lots of greens on the buildings and what not, but not because they have been planted there to make a better environment, rather than because the buildings falling into disrepair). But it scratches that certain itch, aesthetically.
Yet, the movie does not really feel Solarpunk to me. While one can argue that the folks who have fled into the bubble zone are kinda anarchistic in that they do lack clear hierarchies, they also do not do a ton of mutual aid, rather competing over ressources. Which to me is the issue. The movie does not have a lot of that Solarpunk spirit. Not much in terms of either mutual aid or environmental protection going on. It just has a pretty green aesthetic. (Though it should be said: Fucking darn, that movie is pretty.)
Tumblr media
Of course, the obvious answer to name when it comes to Solarpunk anime movies is Studio Ghibli. Obvious, because the studio is one of the central inspirations behind the genre. So, duh, yes, there are quite a few Ghibli movies out there that are pretty darn Solarpunk. Most notably of course Nausicaä, Laputa and Princess Mononoke. These movies all are not only Solarpunk in some aesthetic aspects, but also when it comes to the themes inspiring them. Which is kinda funny to me, because neither of the movies is classical science fiction - making clear that scifi really is not a prerequesit for the genre.
Tumblr media
But there is also another genre, I would say. And that genre is the movies, that do not have much of the aesthetic - outside maybe a vague cottagecore aesthetic - but have a lot of the themes I associate with Solarpunk.
To me two of those movies are Ame to Yuki: Wolf Children, and Misaki no Mayoiga. I already talked about the second movie, but just to sum up: Both movies really go deeply into the aspects of community building, mutual aid and also living in harmony with nature in some degree. Both very much show that we are really good at helping each other. And that you can have a good life without rigid organisation. And I really fucking love that about those movies.
Funnily enough: While funnily enough Makoto Shinkai with his generous aesthetic does have some scenes in several of his movies that just have the aesthetic flair of Solarpunk, I would say that thematically Suzume is the one most in line with the genre. Because it, too, as a lot of themes of mutual aid and just forming community and what not.
And I do not know. Maybe we are gonna see more of that stuff in the future?
