hello! I'm looking for a fic that I read but have since been unable to find. It's sort of an arranged marriage fic. Spock needs to marry Jim to stay on board the enterprise for some reason, but the thing I remember most is Spock taking his marital duties very seriously and he would give Jim a flower each day (or often). I would really appreciate any help in finding this fic, it's so good! Thanks!
Hello!
The only fic I could find that matched your description of Spock bringing Jim flowers often is
Vulcan's Most Eligible Bachelor by museaway
mature aos, kirk/spock, kirk/spock prime victorian vulcans, courtship, language of flowers, love letters, marriage proposals words: 30,146 'Jim wasn't the one who saved Vulcan, but he's the one on a transport right now for a month-long stay as an honored guest. What he doesn't realize is they're all going to try and court himâŠincluding his first officer.'
It's not quite an arranged marriage or fake marriage fic but it's the closest I could find that included the part about flowers.
If anyone knows which fic this is, please share it in the comments or in an ask/submission!
Here are some other fics where Jim and Spock have to fake a marriage/relationship so they can stay together on the Enterprise:
My Love Is Bigger Than Your Love by gunstreet
explicit tos, kirk/spock fake marriage, marriage of convenience, jealous kirk, love confessions, first kiss, slash words: 29,065 'When Spock's mother sends him a message with a list of suitors he must choose from in short order lest he be barred from returning to his homeworld, his only alternative is to bring his own chosen spouse to Vulcan for his parents to meet for themselves. Spock not actually having a spouse is hardly a problem in Jim's mind. However, his brilliant plan has the potential to backfire in ways Jim could easily have predicted⊠and ways he could not have.'
Verisimilitude by CateAdams
explicit CW: graphic depictions of violence tos, mirror!kirk/mirror!spock, mirror universe marriage of convenience, action/adventure, romance, slash words: 15,527 'A new directive from the Imperial Fleet requires all officers of command rank to enter into legal marriage. On the ISS Enterprise, the orderâs purpose is obvious: to allow political operatives to gain influence within the lucrative exploits of the flagship and divert more profits and power to the Admiralty. As the deadline approaches, the captain and first officer of the Enterprise devise an unlikely solution that forces a deeply personal reckoning.'
a sequence that you never learned by annataylor
explicit TW: implied childhood sexual abuse aos, kirk/spock kid fic, fake marriage, getting together, first time words: 64,624 'When Jim gets it in his head to adopt an eight year old Vulcan, Spock presents a logical solution to the issue of Jim's humanity: marriage to a Vulcan citizen.'
the warp and weft of your being by tardigradeschool
teen CW: past implied abuse aos, kirk/spock fake marriage, sharing a bed, hurt/comfort, crew as family, mutual pining words: 7,701 'When getting legally married to Spock is the only way to keep him on the ship, Jim is more than willing to do so. (In fact, upon reflection, it turns out that there are very few things he wouldn't do for Spock.)'
You Could Call It Love by lurikko
mature tos, kirk/spock, post-canon getting together, fake/pretend marriage, slow burn, unresolved sexual tension words: 45,791 'If marrying Spock is what itâs going to take to get them both back on Enterprise for another five-year mission, then Jim Kirk damn well is going to marry Spock.'
Nature of the Bond by jadztone
explicit tos movies, kirk/spock fake/pretend relationship, temporary amnesia, misunderstandings, mutual pining, sharing a bed, friends to lovers, old married spirk, pon farr, slash words: 32,429 'Just before they are to head back to Earth after the fal-tor-pan, Spock detects that he has a bond with Jim. Still having gaps in his memory, he attempts to analyze the nature of the bond. Spock concludes that he and Jim are bondmates, and says as much in front of Starfleet brass. Jim is shocked, but goes along with it out of fear that Starfleet would declare Spock unfit for duty. After telling Spock the truth, they agree to continue letting Starfleet believe that their bond is romantic in nature, while both privately wish that it was.'

Iâve read a few fics lately with some great timey wimey premises so if thatâs your jam you might also enjoy them!
If I missed your fav please share in the comments! I love this sort of thing and will always want to read more.
Some Version Of You by @ncc1701ohno
Summary: Bones is stuck in a time loop and stuck in his room. With Jim. He's forced to admit how intense this thing between them has gotten, how much he feels for Jim, even as he's been falling in love with Spock.
Does what happens in a time loop stay in a time loop?
Thoughts: Iâm a sucker for time loops and this is just such a great short look at it with academy era McKirk.
Highlights: the angst! The longing! THE END!
It Ends Or It Doesnât by @muirmarie
Summary: McCoy dies, and Kirk breaks his hand on a wall. Kirk dies to save McCoy, and McCoy breaks his hand on Spock's face for not stopping him. Spock dies, and he doesn't have to see what happens next, because the day resets. The day keeps resetting. McCoy keeps dying.
Thoughts: these self sacrificing idiots just love each other so much and I love THEM!
Highlights: thereâs a loop towards the end where they accept what is happening and itâs probably my favorite part of this fic.
Grief As A Four Dimensional Figure by @jennelikejennay (moreta1848)
Summary: "One might arguably say it is not fully logical to care whether I cannot return to Vulcan because it no longer exists or because it is separated from me permanently in five-dimensional space.â
âNo, I think I get it,â said Jim. âLike, I havenât gone back to the old house in Iowa in years, but I do like knowing itâs there. If my mom sold it and it got knocked down, it would make a difference to me.â
The ambassador nodded. âLikewise, even in four-dimensional space, we are separated from the things we have lost only by distanceâby the fact that we cannot easily travel along the timeline.â He marked out a section of his timeline, then a dot further back in the bottom timelineâJimâs timeline. âMy marriage is here. I am here, in a different timeline and at a different time. But my marriage exists. It is a figure in four-dimensional space which will continue to exist, in that sense, eternally. So long as the timeline does not collapse, it is a permanent part of history. So although I do not have my spouse with me, I know that he existed. That somewhere, in a time and a dimension I cannot go, we are meeting for the first time. That somewhere, I am asleep in his arms.â
Thoughts: I rarely like aos as much as tos fics, but this one worked so so well for me.
Highlights: every reference to the one with the whales, all the feelings about Amanda, all of Spirkâs big feelings about each other.
Way From Within by @gunstreet and @justveeing
Summary: Jim and Spock are assigned together for a rescue mission, and in the exhilarating aftermath, their attraction to each other comes bubbling to the surface. But the next day Spock is surprisingly distant, and the rest of the morning starts to seem eerily familiar to Jim...
Written by gunstreet and illustrated by lorvee, this is a K/S timeloop story in the vein of Palm Springs or Groundhog Day.
Thoughts: pretty sure we all collectively lost our minds about this one when it came out a few months ago, but if you havenât read it yet it is GREAT. All the fun time loop tropes I love with Kirk and Spock at the center.
Highlights: the art is so good! I love seeing these scenes illustrated!
Happy reading everyone! đ

AOS mckirk + 43? â€ïž
Prompt 43 was, "Why aren't you eating?" You can find the list of prompts here. I originally wrote a version of this request where it's Jim not eating, but then my mind kept saying, but what if it was McCoy. So I did that. XD There's going to be a second part to this where Jim is the one not eating. You can also read the story on AO3 here:
Summary:
It's easy to push aside eating in favor of finishing a task at hand. Everyone needs reminders sometimes.
Start:
When Jim Kirk steps into McCoy's private office space, there's a swagger that's ever-present in his moves. A self-confidence that's more act than reality. Leonard has enough kindness to keep from announcing the fact. The doctor lowers a PADD that had been claiming his ever-dissipating attention, for the last hour and a half.
"Nurse Chapel tells me you haven't been eating." The doctor drops his PADD onto his desk as if he couldn't be bothered to read it for another moment.
âShe told you.â McCoy corrects before rolling his eyes. Itâs official. No more late-night lab tests with Spock. The vulcanâs beginning to rub off on him. Leonard shakes his head. His fingers impatiently tap against the PADDâs screen. "Christine needs to learn how to keep information to herself." Jimâs foot began to subconsciously tap along with Bonesâ fingers. McCoy huffs and crosses his arms. "It's unprofessional."
"She worries about you Bones." Kirk leans against the doctor's desk. A knowing smile on his face. "I worry about you."
Thatâs obvious. Despite his role as captain, Jim has never been able to hide his favoritism. Heâs kept those who he first encountered on the ship closer than most others. Their history throughout the academy resulted in McCoy being allowed closer than most. Even more so than the bridge crew.
"I don't need you worrying over me." Bones insists. How many times have they had a conversation like this? With another huff, he stands up. "And leave Christine alone. She's a rather skilled nurse. I'd hate to lose her. Again." That last word came out with a little more bite than he intended.
"I'll keep that in mind."
There's so much work to do. Wounds to heal, chests waiting to be sewn up, check-ups, vaccinations, physical therapies to watch, paperwork to sign off on, newly released research to catch up on, and then review. All before they head off to start this new five-year mission. The work never ends, and damn it! He's a doctor. If anyone knows how far and long their body can go, it's him. No puffed-up captain is going to tell him otherwise.
"Bones," Jim's soft call is followed by a hand clapping around McCoy's shoulder. Leonard shrugs the handoff. Concern fills Jim's face. His usual smirk now hangs awkwardly open. No doubt the gears are turning in that quick mind. Nimble as a fox. That's what his father wouldâve called Jim.
If they ever had the chance to meet.
"I just want to make sure you keep some meat on you." Jim jokes, rounding on McCoy. He folds his arms over his chest and offers a light smile. Even that small smile would be enough to brighten up most of McCoy's days. Not now though. Thereâs no time. Heâs due for a surgery in about eight hours. Eight hours thatâll pass in a blink of an eye if heâs not careful.
"I've got work to do Jim." Leonard tries to step around.Â
Jim swiftly sways and weaves to keep in his way. "Come on Bones. Join me for lunch."
"I can't."
"Yes, you can.â Jimâs the one rolling his eyes now. âTake a break.â He throws a hand out, leaning in the doorway. Thoroughly blocking McCoyâs only way out. âCaptain's orders." He adds with a wink.
"I said I can't." Itâs not that he doesnât want to, but thereâs too much on the scales. He has to keep going just to keep them balanced. Otherwise, Jim will be short on crew, and missing talented people. Individuals that may keep him alive. Out there in the vast emptiness, theyâll only have each other to count on. Starfleet wonât be able to help if they get into trouble. They canât have come so far for McCoy to make a mistake. Not now. Not again.
McCoy furrows his brows and fights back the memories threatening to take his attention. Deep down Leonard knows why heâs doing this. Why it has become so easy to push his own needs aside and focus on all the lives on board.Â
Part of it is his training. Doctors of all kinds learn early on in school how to push down the biological signs of hunger and stress. When you have lab results due in the morning, but the tests havenât run their full course yet, and midterms are around the corner, while professor after professor is encouraging you to start thinking about your thesis work now before you even manage to get out of undergrad, well stress becomes seconded nature. Exhaustion, hunger pangs, and increased anxiety that verges on panic attacks, all get swept under the rug, and suppressed until a body canât go on anymore. By the time they get to medical school most students have bodies that are simultaneously, in a horrendous state, yet conditioned to work through it. They keep to themselves. Reminding himself with post-its, handwritten notes scrawled in the empty spaces of his books, and phone alerts to drink water, eat food, and take five minutes to close his eyes before pushing on. Always aware of the fact of the hypocrisy between the instructions he gives to patients on how to care for themselves as he works himself to the bone.
Leonardâs trained not to share his own problems. To ignore his own needs, but even that can only go so far. Deep down thereâs more to it. A fear deeper than the grief that washes over him as he loses a patient. Something that motivates him more than any fear he experienced when in school or out in space.
He canât lose Jim again.
"And I said you can." Jim opens up his arms, talking with his hands. "You're not much help to anyone if you're all skin and bones."
The timing had been more. Leonard knows thatâs not what James was saying. He wasnât invalidating the fear, but rationality wasnât home today. "Damn it Jim, I said no!" McCoyâs hand goes flying past Jim, towards the doorâs control. Fingers catch on the bottom of Jimâs long sleeve as his palm smacks the buttons.
Itâs painful how ingrained that loss had become in his life. Terrifying how the mere thought of it sends his mind spiraling as if lost to a deep, powerful vortex that sucks everything else away.
"Hey!" Jim pushes a hand against Leonard's chest. "Watch the hand, McCoy."
McCoy pulls his hand back. His fingers were shaking. With a deep sigh Leonard folds them in. Doing his best to calm his racing nerves the doctor closes his eyes. Doing his best stern, yet calm voice Leonard says, "Just get out of here Jim. I've got lives to save, and people who need fixing." People you need.
Leonard opens his eyes slowly. The look on Jimâs face was one of determination. Better than heartbroken. McCoy can only imagine his own expression. He needs to get back to work.
âNurse Chapel.â Christine appears right behind him, as if waiting for Jimâs call. âWhen is Doctor McCoyâs next scheduled appointment?â
âIn eight hours sir. Itâs Lieutenant Alfonseâs surgery.â An engineer skilled enough, that Scotty himself has been asking after his health since they first discovered the kidney issue.
âDoes he have any pressing matters in the meantime?â
Christine doesnât even bother pretending to look at the datapadd in her hands. âNo sir?â Her eyes stare McCoy down.
âHeâs officially off shift. Call me directly if thereâs an emergency.â Leonard fights back the urge to swear. Jim really isnât going to let this drop.
âYou sir?â Chapel asks, trying to get a look at the captainâs face. The man keeps his back to her, and his eyes trained on McCoy.
Jim crosses his arms. âHeâll be eating with me in my room.â A new smirk adorns his face. âWonât you Bones?â
Sensing no room for argument McCoy agrees through gritted teeth, âI guess I will, sir.â He added that last word to make it clear that while heâs bending heâll remember this. If Jimâs bothered by that idea, he doesnât act like it.
Jim steps aside, finally letting Leonard pass by. Chapel steps back out of the way, heading over to the bio beds, with a polite nod of her head. Leonard steals a glance at her datapadd. It wasnât even turned on. They planned this! Jim comes bounding after. He lightly pats Leonardâs arm, as he falls into step beside the doctor. âNo be angry Bones. Youâre gonna like this.â
âI like working.â
Jim playfully smacks McCoyâs chest. âNo you donât. You like fried potatoes, dumplings, and steak bites.â
That stops Leonard dead in his tracks. âWhat?â He turns to face Jim whose got the biggest shit-eating grin. Sickbayâs front door slides shut behind them.
Jim grabs both of McCoyâs arms, and fix the end of his short sleeves. âLike I said,â Jim leans closer practically bubbling with energy. âYouâll like it. I even used basil.â
This time Leonard couldnât keep his face from forming a wide, disblieving smile. âYou what?â Did that mean Jim actually cooked? Yeah they were still on Earth but it mustâve been out of his way to go and grab actual food from a market. McCoyâs stomach growls, voicing itâs lack of care over where the food came from, or how it was prepared. Either way he has to try it now. As if it wasnât already being required by Jim.
A home cook meal. Literally. It shouldnât be such an odd thought considering that the Enterprise was going to be his only home for the next five years. Leonard had expected to only eat synthesized food for it all. An actual cooked meal, made with fresh ingredients, his mouth starts to water.
The captain was already a few steps down the hall, as McCoyâs feet finally lift and start to follow. With each step bringing him a little bit closer to the promise of food, his body grows lighter. Thereâs still a lot of work to do. Guilt threatens to rear itâs ugly head back up, but Jimâs smile banishes the thoughts to the deepest recesses of Bonesâ mind.
Sometimes itâs easy to forget to actually enjoy his time with the people he wants to save.
Another lesson trained into the practice, unfortunately.

Spirk fanfic rec
Some amazing Spirk fanfic to bless your dash because Iâm falling in love with this shit all over again (this is like the 10th time this has happened lol):
Entering Orbit:Â Jim escapes to Iowa to avoid the media frenzy following the Narada incident, but a late-night miscommunication results in Spock turning up on his front porch; rated m; 30,957 words
Papers in the Roadside:Â Non-Starfleet AU. Jim owns a small bar in Chicago, keeps on picking up strays and taking care of everyone no matter how hard it makes his own life. Spock is a journalist writing feature articles for the Chicago Tribune; he depicts the world with uncanny skill, but hides more than one personal drama and is possibly under surveillance from the Vulcan royal family. They meet by accident just before their lives start to spin out of control; rated e; 49,637 words
Take Refuge in What You Know:Â AU - Kirk has moved into a apartment/house and wants to get to know his neighbors. He meets his neighbor Spock, a loner who suffers from extreme agoraphobia. Kirk thinks he's beautiful enigma; rated e; 120,334 words
Listen, this is not only my favorite Star Trek fic of all time, itâs also one of my favorite fanfics in general. Itâs right up there with Text Talk and The Shoebox Project from the HP fandom, which if youâve read, you know are incredible and frankly life-changing. And this fanfic changed my life. The description the author gives doesnât do the beauty of this fic justice. I suffer from agoraphobia and Spockâs depiction as an agoraphobic man was probably the most well-researched, sympathetic, empathetic, caring, realistic portrayal of what itâs like to be agoraphobic that Iâve ever witnessed in fiction. It made me cry like a child because I had never felt so seen and understood. This writer is incredible, and this fic is incredible. I canât recommend it enough. Itâs an AU, which Iâm usually pretty wary about, but it barely even feels like an AU. It just feels like Jim and Spock. The authorâs understanding of both of their charactersâ is perfect, like just a spot-on portrayal of who they are. This fic genuinely helped me accept who I am and helped me understand that I am capable of & deserving of love. If you donât read any other Star Trek fics (and you def should read more Star Trek fics because theyâre amazing), then let this one be the one you read. I dare you not to read it three times in a row like I did.
Observations:Â First Officer Spock comments on life aboard the Enterprise and his service under Captain James T. Kirk; rated m; 500,000+ words.
So the author of this fic actually did a thing where they made this fic into two books (similar to what The Shoebox Project authors did many years ago in the HP fandom). They donât get any money from people buying the books; the cost is just to go towards producing the books. This fic is the equivalent of two LARGE novels. Weâre talking 600 pages & up. Itâs a huge fic. Now, that being said, I read it in one day. ONE DAY. Itâs that good. This is another one of my all-time favorite fics, though not quite as dear to my heart as the one I listed above. Itâs focused on AOS, and tbh, I forget that what happens in this book isnât actually canon. Like itâs so well-told, it just feels like itâs now part of the timeless story of Kirk & Spock. The âprofessionalâ Star Trek writers would never be brave enough to do what this author does with Kirk and Spock, though. This fic will make you angry, will make you laugh, will make you cry. It has such a good grasp on every single character. It also shows the love between the crew of the Enterprise, which is always a treat, and itâs beautifully done in this fic. It has a sorta-enemies-to-lovers arc between Spirk and an enemies-to-close-friends arc between Spock and McCoy that is beautifully done and fleshed out. This fic is definitely a journey to go through, and I canât recommend it enough. Itâs extremely slow burn, and you will want to slap both Kirk and Spock (and McCoy) upside the head at certain points lol.Â
Of Coffee Beans and Green Tea Leaves:Â The progression of a relationship, through Coffee Beans and Green Tea Leaves. Basically, itâs an AU where Kirk works at a coffee shop to pay his way through school, and Spock visits often. rated t; 16,429 words
Love, love, love, this fic. Itâs cute, itâs in character. They have kind of a rocky start together, so itâs got a little bit of that Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy i-hated-you-but-now-i-love-you-marry-me vibes to it. Iâm a sucker for that, if you havenât figured that out by now lol. Itâs really good, and a really enjoyable read. And itâs not too long, if youâre in the mood for something on the shorter end of things.
Please Donât Touch the Vulcans: The "yes" is out of Jim's mouth before he can think about it. Jim is chipper about having time off for the holidays. He asks everyone if they want to spend time together but sadly, everyone ditches Jim over the holidays because they have plans. McCoy visits his daughter, Nyota visits her family, and everyone splits. Not knowing Spock has feelings for him, Jim doesn't even bother asking if he wants to spend time together figuring he has something to do. Something cute, romantic with the boys spending time with one another and confessions; rated m; 17,690 words
Super cute and has lots of Sarek, which idk about yâall, but Iâm always a fan of. Sarek and Jim kind of get to know each other a bit, and itâs cute. Sarek knows about theyâre in love before Spock & Kirk know lol. If I remember correctly, thereâs also some appearances from everyoneâs favorite: Old!Spock! You also get a little bit of jealous and protective Young!Spock. So youâre in for a real treat with this one.Â
The Ren shatâvar Trilogy:Â A split-second decision changes Jim's life forever, as he enters into a bond with Spock in the face of certain torture. Enemies to the Federation emerge from unlikely places, and the command team must contend with unexpected threats, as well as challenges within their own intense relationship. In this three-part series, the Enterprise races across the galaxy to confront the unknown, and Jim and Spock discover the true significance of their unprecedented connection; rated e; 184,411 words
Textual Attraction:Â Valentineâs Day does not bring up pleasant memories for Cadet Kirk. But the serendipitous switch-up of his cell phone with a particular Vulcan professorâs will make his day far more interesting âand romantic. Perhaps some new memories can be made! 15,900 words
SO GOOD. Just SO good
Spaceman:Â Academy AU. Five times Spock realizes he's attracted to a barista at the academy spaceport, and one time he decides to do something about it. rated t; 3728 words
Short, sweet, funny. Youâll love it.
Subtext:Â Texting your Vulcan first officer in the middle of the night is never a good idea. Especially when you have an obsessive crush on said Vulcan. The holidays are approaching and Jim is left entirely Spockless aboard the Enterprise when his First takes shore leave on New Vulcan. After some midnight pining, Jim sends a text he instantly regrets. That is, until Spock responds and willingly continues their textual communications to an inevitable conclusion; rated t; 13,032 words
Cute, sweet, funny. Itâs a texting fic. I think youâve probably figured out I love those. This one makes me laugh so fucking hard. Like actually laugh-out-loud-omg-did-i-just-snort kind of funny. Spock is great in this one
All Spock Wants For Christmas:Â While Jim is away on a delegation mission, he panics about what to give Spock for Christmas. With help from Bones and Uhura, and in between some spam texting with Spock, Jim realizes he already has the perfect gift. And all it needs is wrapping paper and a bow; rated t; 11,966 words
And here we have another cute, sweet, funny texting fic. Sue me lol
The Morning After:Â Jim convinces Spock to take shore leave with him on Risa, hoping the time together will help re-solidify their bond of friendship after some recent tension. Meanwhile, Spock convinces himself he's on Risa for one reason and one reason only, to prevent his wayward captain from getting into trouble. After a passionately illogical night of Romulan Ale and chocolate infused liquor, everything changes when Jim wakes with something other than a hangover filling his head. Something he's sure neither he nor Spock can handle. Because if Jim knows anything for sure, it's that his messed up thoughts belong nowhere near Spock's clean, ordered mind; rated m; 50,381 words
HAHA. This fic fucking cracks me up. Youâve got drunk boys pining over each other & not realizing it. Youâve got accidental marriage. Youâve got bed sharing. Itâs great, itâs cute, itâs funny.Â
Take This Sinking Boat (And Point It Home):Â In which Spock pines, Jim isnât stupid (except he kind of is), and Christopher Pike has had enough of this bullshit; 6698 words
Pike is great in this one, and itâs super, super funny.
Extracurricular Activities:Â Â Spock returns to the Academy from a tour of duty to find an intriguing cadet captures his attention; rated e; 15,433 words
Veritas:Â Basically, Kirk and Spock are on trial because the Federation thinks they are emotionally compromised by each other, which is putting the lives of their crew in danger. They have to convince a court theyâre not actually in love with each other. They think the claims are bullshit. They think it will be easy to prove that they arenât in love or emotionally compromised, damn it. It isnât; rated m; 186,80 words
This one is so, so good. A real gem off of Fanfic.net. I remember it was actually one of the first Spirk fanfics I ever read, and it blew me away. The progression of their relationship is really well-done and interesting. It has star-crossed lovers vibes and has some really emotionally intense moments in it, especially for Spock.Â
A Habitual Affection:Â Living in 1930s New York with the Vulcan you're secretly in love with is no simple thing. But Jim never liked anything simple. And then, the big snowstorm hit...; rated t; 7998 words
A beautiful TOS fic about one of the gayest episodes of Star Trek. Love this one.Â
Atlas:Â Between what was and what will be stands James Tiberius Kirk, in all his fractured patchwork glory. Because saving the Federation was only the beginning; rated t; 135,529 words
A beaut. Really great characterization, and the progression of Jim and Spockâs relationship is really well-done.

Hey so Iâm curious about your feelings on bones having a daughter? Itâs just something Iâve been feeling conflicted about lately. Like on one hand I think it adds an interesting layer to his character. On the other hand it just seems like something that he would feel guilty about, assuming that itâs not a close relationship, which people sort of go back and forth on since he would be pretty absent but he also just seems like such a caring and loyal person so it can be hard to imagine him just not being around on any level for his kid. I also struggle a bit with the fact that so many people write her as being so young, which isnât a bad thing but I always imagine her as a teenager or young adult, which, depending on how long Bones has been in space and part of the fleet, would also likely impact how close they are. Like did he leave when she was a young child so they never had the opportunity to be close or did he leave when she was a bit older so they had a relationship before he left?
I'm conflicted about him having an ex-wife jahdjshfjgdjgfj
This is gonna be headcanon heavy and maybe not really what's common? idk Because the fandom expects it, I generally have him be divorced and have a daughter in TOS. In my mind, he married young and had Joanna when he was in his very early 20s (like 22yo) and was studying medicine. He wasn't ready to settle down, he wasn't able to be there for his wife or his newborn daughter, and within two years after Joanna's birth, the wife had enough and filed for divorce. That led McCoy to join the service.
So in my 'verse McCoy has never been around. He provided for his daughter, and the older he got the more he started to reach out to her, but it didn't always go well. (In my mind, Joanna is bitter and blames McCoy, especially during her teenage years.) He feels regret over his choices (and more and more the older he gets), but he's imho a career-driven man (like Kirk), and he doesn't regret his life in general. (in my hc he reconnects with Joanna after Joanna has her own daughter, and he tries to be a good grandfather)
I think it's rare for Joanna to be young in TOS-based fics (not unheard of though), but in AOS fics, she'd be young. I think it's usually assumed she was born in 2249 - that makes her 16-21 during the five-year mission in TOS. But would make her just a kid during the AOS timeline. When Kirk and McCoy met in AOS, Joanna would be 6. (But people might use different years idk) I personally don't headcanon that Joanna exists in AOS, though. The years are just all off, so I don't even hc that McCoy married the same woman. Since in TOS, at the time of him meeting Kirk in AOS, McCoy was with Nancy.
I also can't stop but think how Jim would think about his BFF going to space and leaving his young kid behind. He'd have a lot of things to say about that imho
So, even though I would occasionally prefer not to use McCoy having an ex-wife or a daughter, I created a version for myself I can get behind. It also allows me to deepen the connection between Kirk and McCoy (in TOS) because they can commiserate and bond over having kids and not knowing them. And I love to create connections between the relationship between McCoy&Joanna and Sarek&Spock, allowing McCoy to understand Sarek's position and being able to explain some things to Spock, things Spock can't see, because McCoy speaks from experience.

Fic Writer Review
Thank you for the tag @herosofmarvelanddc Iâve been wanting to do a little bit of a reflection so this great!
1. How many do you have on Ao3?
19! I have another one shot that may make this an even 20, but itâs currently half written!
2. Whatâs your total Ao3 word count?
257,652 which I think is not too bad for just over a year!
3. How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
Three? On Ao3 anyway but all my docs are Agents of Shield or Agent Carter with one MCU crossover with both!
4. What are your top 5 five by kudos?
*spoilers in descriptions but all Daisy/Sousa, mainly fluff*
Never Needed Anything More - 274 kudos - My collection of oneshots for my Daisy/Sousa Coffee Shop AU. Lots of family fluff documenting their relationship, small bits of angst (but slightly less trauma for the characters than in the show)
To Live for the Hope of It All - 264 kudos - My original Coffee Shop AU. 12 chapters of Daisy and Sousa dancing around each other and my first ever fic!
You Belong - 215 kudos - The first of my alternate timeline fics. Set a few years post-finale, Daisy and Daniel have a daughter and life is simple for the first time ever. Then someone from another timeline arrives ïżŒat Shield and throws them for a loop. Beth Sousa is the daughter of an alternate version of Daniel Sousa and former shield directors Peggy Carter.
Return of the Astro Ambassadors - 157 kudos - After a long space mission, our Astro Ambassadors reunite with their family, fluff and emotions with surprise characters!
Iâll Be Right Here (when you wake up) - 152 kudos - Temporary Amnesia where Sousa gets hurt on a mission and Daisy being a worried wife. While in the hospital thinks heâs in the 1950âs for a hot sec and then he flirts with his own wife because heâs unaware of who she is. *Bonus chapter of Daisy being in the hospital and Daniel being a worried husband* ft cute tag scenes and Mack nicknames
5. Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
Yes! I try and reply to every single one as they make me so happy, even older fics! I love when people point out references Iâve made or ask questions.
6. Whatâs the fic youâve written with the angstiest ending?
I donât really write with angsty endings! Everything tends to be very fluff, happy endings over here!
7. Do you write crossovers? If so, what is the craziest one youâve written?
Iâve got my alternate timeline fics but that is just AoS and Agent Carter. One of my fics has a small mcu crossover as a small attempt to quell my post-endgame issues but is quite simple in reality! Here.
8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?
I have received what I would call âconstructive criticismâ on a OCâs name (each to their own) and one on my portrayal of a certain character (đđđ) but I kind of roll my eyes and get over it đ
9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?
I donât because I find it hard enough to describe kisses in a non repetitive way let alone anything else đ
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that Iâm aware of! I did briefly think I might in Wattpad but I canât work that website at all so I gave up trying to look đ
11. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I havenât but that would be so cool
12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I havenât, and I honestly think I would over think that so much and I donât think my writing is good enough for that!
13. What is your all time favourite ship?
Writing wise! I love writing Daisy and Sousa as I think the fact we only had their relationship build for a few episodes left two of my favourite character open for a lot of interpretation. But also like Peggy and Sousa lives rent free in my mind. None writing its Castle and Beckett, as I have a real soft spot for them as thatâs what introduced me to fandom culture!
14. Whatâs a WIP that you want to finish but donât think you ever will?
My Peggysous fic đ
no I will, eventually. Iâve got it 90% planned but then I get distracted and write a fluffy one shot instead đ also the fact that the agent Carter fandom is a little quieter means I struggle with motivation sometimes!
15. What are your writing strengths?
Fluff I think? Chuck a few feelings in there as well
16. What are your writing weaknesses?
Describing smiles and kisses. Iâm so repetitive. I also get ridiculously bogged down in details and dates that donât matter, such as birthdays of the whole shield gang and working out their actual ages after time travel.
17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I love doing this, but am also ïżŒvery aware that I donât speak another language and I donât want to get it wrong or offend anyone!
18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Agents of Shield. Big surprise to everyone ïżŒđ
19. Whatâs your favourite fic youâve ever written?
I find this so hard! I have a soft spot for my coffee shop AU series Brought Me to You as itâs what I first came up with a week after the finale and have only just finished, but I also love Iâll be Right Here (when you wake up) . One shot wise I really enjoyed writing Itâs the Way They Love as itâs just different from what I wrote normally!
I feel like a bunch of people will have already done this but Iâll tag a few people if they want to join in and havenât already : @redvanillabee @steeleholtingon @stilltryingtowrite no pressure at all!

My ridiculous fandoms:
I know, multifandom much?!
I have a LOT, although I will post mostly AoS shit. (I donât make things for all of these, donât worry lmao, mostly I just spectate and sometimes reblog stuff.) Up to know Iâve put them all up in my bio, but Iâve decided only to do the top, say, three, otherwise it just gets wayyy too long. However, Iâm putting it all here, so that anyone, if they feel so inclined, can see what shit Iâm interested in.Â
I will also be putting a bunch of my favourite quotes from the shows there, because, well, Iâm a total nerd xD.Â
Marvelâs Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
âWith great responsibility comes...a ton of weird shit you are not prepared to deal with.â
âThe steps you take donât have to be big, they just need to take you in the right direction.â
âSometimes, making a difference means being different.â
Star Trek: Discovery (sauce)
âYou had me at unsanctioned mission...âÂ
âDeal with me, universe, while I deal with her.â
And...(though this is not a real quote, exactly) Sauce Afirma Sauce Eterna. :)
Derry Girls
âIf anyone is feeling anxious, worried or maybe you just want a chat, please, please do not come crying to me.â
âWe got the gist. They ran out of spuds, everyone was raging.âÂ
âSlainte, motherfuckers!â
Julie and the Phantoms
âChill man, Street Dogs havenât killed us yet.â
âI cried in a room for twenty-five years and didnât get a single hug from either of you!â
âOh. She said oh. Thatâs what you say if you get socks on your birthday, not when youâre invited to join the most epic band ever!âÂ
Brigerton
âHaving a nice face and pleasant hair is not an accomplishment. Do you know what is an accomplishment? Attending university! If I were a man, I could do that, you know.â
âYou would actually have to be interesting for me to bother spying on you"
âAll is fair in love and war but some battles leave no victor, only a trail of broken hearts that makes us wonder if the price we pay is ever worth the fight.â
Simon Snow series
âYou were the sun, and I was crashing into you.â
âSharing a room with the person you want most is like sharing a room with an open fire. He's constantly drawing you in. And you're constantly stepping too close. And you know it's not good--that there is no good--that there's absolutely nothing that can ever come of it. But you do it anyway. And then... Well. Then you burn.â
âI'd cross every line for him. I'm in love with him. And he likes this better than fighting.â
Avatar the Last Airbender
âLife happens wherever you are, whether you make it or not.â
âMy first girlfriend turned into the moon.â âThatâs rough buddy.â
âWhy am I so bad at being good?â
Harry Potter
âItâs leviOsa, not levioSA!âÂ
âI solemnly swear I am up to no good.â

âIâm just not a ânew experienceâ kind of guy. My comfort zone is basically like, that chair, and honestly? The arms are a little sharp.âÂ
âWhat matters isnât if people are good or bad. What matters is, if theyâre trying to be better today than they were yesterday. You asked me where my hope comes from? Thatâs my answer.â
âWe do nothing. We hope that our early successes make up for the embarrassing mess weâve become. Like Facebook. Or America.â
Community
"We'll definitely be back next year. If not, it'll be because an asteroid has destroyed all human civilization. And that's canon."

Artemis Fowl
âI am the future queen of this world, at the very least. You may refer to me as Mistress Koboi for the next five minutes. After that you may refer to me as Aaaaarrrrgh, hold your throat, die screaming, and so on.âÂ
âWe lost the crickets,â she said. âEven you canât make that sound tough.â
âI never tell anyone exactly how clever I am. They would be too scared.â
How To Train Your Dragon
â Thank you for nothing, you useless reptile!â
âYou just gestured to all of me.â
âToothless, what are you doing? We need her to LIKE us!â
The Dragon Prince
âIâm just a kid. I havenât fought in any battles. I havenât read many books of wisdom. I havenât gone through the things that made my father the king he was. So Iâve decided that I donât have to be the king my father was. My father made choices to keep fighting battles that started hundreds of years before he was born. To punish enemies for crimes their parents committed! I donât want to be that kind of king.âÂ
âThe dragon prince is alive! And heâs really cute, by the way.â
âWhat? WHAAAAAAAT!â
The Hitchhikerâs Guide to the Galaxy
âWould it save you a lot of time if I just gave up and went mad now?â Â
âA towel, [The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy] says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapors; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-boggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.â
âFor a moment, nothing happened. Then, after a second or so, nothing continued to happen.â
âThe Answer to the Great Question... Of Life, the Universe and Everything... Is... Forty-two,' said Deep Thought, with infinite majesty and calm.â
âFord... you're turning into a penguin. Stop it.â
sorry for the five I couldnât choose only 3
But there you have it, my insane, ridiculous, way-too-many fandoms. For anyone who cares. ;)

Dinner Date? (AOS Spock x Reader)
A/N: I think this may just be a part one, I do want to continue the story but I was more eager to see if people were interested first. Also this is meant to be read with either a female, male, or non-binary reader! I have been wanting to do a Spock x Reader for awhile now, this is my first time writing one! Enjoy!
Summary:Â After being hospitalized (and passing out) in Sickbay from a dumb choice you made while on mission, you are surprised to find that Commander Spock had stayed by your side while you slept.
Word Count: 3,338
Warning: Swearing and a sarcastic Bones and cute moments
---
âShit. Shit. Holy- FUCK!â Was all you could manage to say as a sharp pain twisted into your side. You were currently in Sickbay after having collapsed on the floor just outside of the bridge, nearby crewmen immediately rushed you to a not-so-happy Dr. McCoy.
âDamn it, man, I told you not to eat that planetâs weird berries!â McCoy said in a frustrated tone as he pulled out his scanner. âItâs only been what- two hours? And you are already showing symptoms of infection in your abdominal region that would usually take years to develop!â
âHow can you be so sureâŠâ You breathed, gripping at your stomach which started to cramp. â...that it was the berries?â
âMm, I dunno (Y/N), maybe because of the fact that Jim and I had no berries whatsoever and we seem to be doing perfectly fine. Itâs no coincidence, damn it!â
Nausea passed over your body in massive waves, you applied pressure via your fingertips between the two tendons on your wrist in an attempt to get the feeling to cease. You remembered seeing this technique in an article somewhere, but you were pretty sure that the article didnât take into account your situation. âWell the natives said... that eating the berries was a sign of a... good spirit⊠a way to connect with them. Itâs called respecting...tradition. Something you and the Captain⊠refused to do.â The fact that it was taking so much energy to construct sentences both amazed and horrified you.
âMaybe those berries werenât meant for humans.â McCoy grunted, walking out your line of sight. âJust because you're some diplomat representing all of Starfleet doesnât mean you have to go around eating weird foods for the sake of tradition.â
âBones,â You declared. âI could really do without the lecture right now.â You only felt worse the longer you laid there, your forehead broke out into a sweat and your face grew hot. You pictured McCoy getting his instruments together from the sound of metal clinking against metal, at least that is what you hoped he was doing.
âAlright! Alright, hold onâŠâ He said, fumbling with what sounded like a plastic bag. âDamn... what would that green-blooded hobgoblin think of this?â
âYou mean Commander Spock?â You asked, even though you understood what he meant. âWhat does he have to do with-â a sharp sting entered the side of your arm as your asshole-of-a-friend, and trusted doctor, injected you with a large syringe. â-Oh, what the hell was that?!â
âThat-â McCoy said, holding up the syringe defiantly, â-just saved your life. Well, maybe. Give it an hour or two, your fever should already be going down. The pain will subside in no time.â
âJesus, Bones, you could have at least warned me before stabbing my arm!"
âWell itâs not supposed to hurt so much without a warning.â You heard him say, but you were more focused on the white walls within the Sickbay, which were beginning to blur into everything else until it became one muddy display. It made your eyelids feel heavy.
âEverything is so abstract lookingâŠâ You said half-consciously, watching as different colors danced in front of your vision.
âWell Iâm no Picasso, much less a painter,â You heard him say, or maybe you just imagined it. It didnât matter though, seeing as all the sounds and sights were becoming one big jumble. It didnât stay this way for long before everything went completely black.
You have been abroad upon the Enterprise for almost a year now, part of its five-year intergalactic planetary voyage. As a Starfleet diplomat, you were stationed on the bridge and tasked with regulating Starfleet protocol and managing peace-treaties and negotiations. Through this job, you befriended many on the Enterprise, especially those stationed on the bridge with you. You were quick to become friends with the notorious (or so he thought) Captain Kirk, as well as others like Lieutenant Uhura and the pilots, Mr. Sulu and Chekhov. There were even people beyond the bridge like Mr. Scotty down in Engineering who you managed to get well acquainted with. You were simply amazed by all these different and infatuating personalities you had come to know, but there was one person- or rather, an alien- who you had come to admire the most aboard your time here.
Commander Spock.
You were only to report on the bridge three days out of the week, the rest of your time was spent helping to ease the tension between antsy crewmen who were getting themselves into disputes and fistfights (even though it was not in your pay grade, and was sure as hell not part of your job description either) and even assisting the Chief Officers in preparation for meetings in the department they resided over (which was part of your pay grade).
It was a small attraction⊠at first.
The Enterprise was only four months into its five-year voyage whenever the Captain tasked you to assist in preparing and partaking in an introductory meeting (really it was more of a banquet) for the Science Department. The last two months had already taken up your time with meetings (*banquets) in other departments: speaking on behalf of Starfleet, introducing yourself to the staff and crew, helping them adjust to life aboard a starship, answering to millions upon millions questions and concerns. Today would be no different, or so you thought.
You entered the science lab with a clipboard full of notes you were preparing to say in your speech. Contrary to othersâ belief, you never used the same speech twice, you took too much pride in your work to do so- except for those few rush jobs where the only thing you managed to have on hand was a speech about how cute yet terrifying Tribbles were. The memory of all those confused faces in the crowd during a Starfleet conference still haunted you to this day. The Admiral was to say, in the very least, displeased.
Awaiting by a table of fliers was the Enterpriseâs chief science officer. His back had been turned to you when you entered the lab, and he was still unaware of your presence as you drew closer to him.
âCommander.â you greeted, yet received no reply. That was odd, with you being the only other person in the laboratory besides him, he had to have heard you. Maybe you just werenât being loud enough. Determined, you took another step closer. âCommander!âÂ
Still, no reply. By now you managed to get close enough to see his face, and you were rather more perplexed to see that his eyes were closed. Odd. You werenât well educated enough about Vulcans to know if this was some ritualistic standing sleep-like state they put themselves in, but it reminded you of a similar nature that some of the Terran animals back home displayed.
âJust like a horseâŠâ You murmured, before slowly reaching up to touch the Vulcanâs face. You hadnât realized how close you had gotten to him. He stood there perfectly, his face was so mellow, so clear of emotion, he almost looked like some sort of statueâŠ
A hand caught your wrist before a finger could even graze his cheek, a shock ran through your body, it scared the shit out of you. âWhat is like a horse?â Commander Spock asked, staring down at you with his full, dark eyes.
You quickly (and embarrassingly) pulled your hand away from his grip, holding it protectively close over your hammering heart. âC-Commander Spock, I-I thought you were asleep!â
âI was not sleeping.â He responded in a calm tone. He straightened his posture and placed his hands behind his back. âI was meditating.â
âNervous?â You asked half-jokingly. âThe whole department is going to be here tonight, things can go wrong, but it will be alright.â It was apparent you were saying this more for your own benefit rather than his.
âI find it illogical to be nervous.â
âAnd why is that?â
âBased on what I could gather from your involvement in past assignments, Lieutenant. I trust you are more than qualified to execute this meeting successfully.â He replied with a small smile.
You felt your heart swell at the praise, and you smiled right back.
After that day, you and Commander Spock maintained a mutual friendship: greeting one another with a nod or smile as you passed by in the hallways or having small (but quite educational on your part) talks while riding the lift, it never went beyond that, but you didnât mind. You felt like your growing attraction for him had to be limited in some way, seeing as his thoughts on you are nothing but platonic.
âŠ
...Lieutenant?
Lieutenant (L/N)? Can you hear me?
You felt a rough shake of your shoulders, pulling you straight out of the darkness in a start.
âDoctor, I believe that was an unnecessary course of action. The Lieutenant was already waking up.â A familiar voice said.Â
âYouâre overreacting, Spock. (Y/N) needed a jumpstart.â Another voice responded.
You looked around the room quickly, watching as the blurred figures started to take appropriate shape and form. It was Dr. McCoy and Commander Spock, both peering down at you. Immediately, McCoy started to check your vitals asking you clipboard questions like: How are you feeling? Is there any pain when I do this? Commander Spock on the other hand stood idly by with his hands behind his back, his face could be read as stoic if it werenât for the fact that his eyebrows were furrowed. It actually surprised you to see him here, but you had a feeling that it had to do with the details of your mission.
"Oh manâŠ" you grunted as you sat up slowly. "How long was I out for?"
"Approximately for five hours and twenty-one minutes." Spock responded.
"Yeah, because (Y/N) was so worried about the exact number of minutes they missed." McCoy said with a loose smile, despite the gruff tone in his voice.
"I may not be well acquainted in human social cues, Doctor-" Spock said, turning his gaze on McCoy, "-But I believe you are using sarcasm. In your case, this would not be uncommon."
"Well good job, Sherlock. Seems you cracked the case!" McCoy said with false praise.
Spock went to open his mouth, you could tell he wanted clarification by the way his gaze narrowed, but instead, he diverted his attention back onto you. "How are you feeling, Lieutenant?"
It was a question that surprised both you and the doctor (or maybe he always looked that confused). âI feel fine-â You said abruptly, âWell, at least I think I do. Am I, Bones?â You nervously looked over to your friend.
âYeah, youâre fine.â McCoy responded, waving his hand casually. âAll we had to do was pump your system full of antibodies and just like that, infection was gone. Thank God we arenât living in the Dark Ages.â
The Commander approached your bedside. âIt seems the berries initiated a rapid case of abdominal infection known to your species as colonic diverticulitis. Itâs quickening effects seem to have caused a trauma in your nerves, specifically your sensory nerves, leading them to send incorrect signals. Which explains your disassociation with reality.â
âAlright, Mr. Know-it-all, Iâm the doctor here.â McCoy said with a grumble, before addressing you. âIt just means those berries infected your bowels and started blending your five senses together like one big smoothie.â
âThat is rather an inaccurate description, but yes, the Doctor is somewhat correct.â A slight grimace was in Spockâs voice, causing you to smile. The two always had differentiating opinions. Watching them react to one another like highly-active mind fields was quite entertaining.
McCoy only shook his head in irritation, âWhich means, (Y/N), no more eating any foreign soul-binding berries, you hear? I mean it.â He was now targeting you, which was not so entertaining.
âOkay. Okay.â You held up your hands in defeat. âI solemnly promise to never eat any foreign soul-binding berries, again.â
âYeah, well letâs see how long that promise lasts.â He crossed his arms, before a faint smirk appeared on his face. âYou know Pointy-Ears here-â he said gesturing to the Commander. â-was worried sick about you. Got here as soon as you passed out, didnât even leave your side when writing his report to command.â
You felt your face grow hot at the news. He waited here for you? He wasnât in the landing party with you when you beamed down onto that planet⊠you didnât know how to take this news. But knowing you, you must have been overthinking it, he was just being friendly after all. Still, you had to force yourself not to cover your face in shame as you knew it was red with embarrassment. You didnât want your friend (and doctor) or the Vulcan you had come to like so much see your flustered expression.
âI was merely concerned with the Lieutenantâs well-being, as (L/N)âs superior, I saw it only fitting to stay by their side until they got better.â You heard him say.
When you felt confident enough to look up from your bed sheets you were surprised to see Spock staring straight at you.
âUh huhâŠand Iâm the king of Mars.â McCoy sarcastically said with a taunting smile that you wish you could smack off his face. He probably didnât even know what he was embarrassing you by doing this.
âDoctor, the United Martian Colonies is governed by a uniglobal government, it does not have an establish monarchy-â
âHow about I get a drink, and you finish that thought later. Alright, Spock?â Bones interjected with eagerness. â(Y/N), youâre free to leave whenever. From your head to your toes, you are medically sound.â
âThanks to you, Bones.â You replied.
âPlease, itâs only my lifeâs work.â He said, waving his PADD up in the air knowingly. âAnd if you need me, which you better not, Iâll be in the bar- drinking the day away.â With that, he disappeared out the door.
You turned your attention over to Spock, who had his gaze on the door. You decided it would be best to head out as well, seeing as you couldnât control your heartbeat, you were sure you looked like a tomato with how frequently your face was turning red. "Well I guess Iâm free to leave since my doctor suggested so." You say in a means of farewell.
The bed's mattress shifted under your weight as you slowly began to peel yourself off from it, it took awhile, seeing as the way you had been laying on it for the past five hours made you stiff,
"I have to agree with the Doctor's earlier statement." Spock said, grabbing your attention. "Your actions were reckless and could have been fatal if it were not for him."
"Understood, Commander.â You responded formally as you pulled on your yellow blazer over your tank top. You felt somewhat dejected, but shook that feeling away. He was concerned because he was your commanding officer. That gesture alone should have been satisfying enough.
âI typed up a mission report and sent it to Command, they requested that you send in a report as well.â
âThank you, Commander.â You replied, grabbing your Command insignia off of the end table before reattaching it to your uniform. âHave the natives of the planet decided whether or not to join the Federation?â
âIâm afraid I do not know. I was... preoccupied at the time.â
He must have been talking about the report. Thinking about it now, it would be best to complete yours now while it was still fresh on your mind. It was only fair to your Commander that you got it done as soon as possible.Â
âWell I better head-â You started.
âLieutenant, I was wondering-â Spock also initiated taking another step forward.
The sound of the entry door sliding open stopped you both, it was Captain Kirk.
âI heard what had happened and the natives promised-â Kirk announced as he casually walked into Sickbay. â-they did not know it was potentially fatal to us and assured- am I interrupting something here?â His nonchalant attitude formed into a more devious one as he looked between the two of you.
âUh, no, you arenât.â You said quickly. âWhat did they say?â
Kirk smirked, briefly shrugging his shoulders, before continuing on. âWell everything is all good now. Just about an hour after you were admitted into Sickbay, the natives agreed to join the Federation. Took awhile for them to decide. They sent gifts of apology to you, I had them sent to your room. Of course, if I had known that I would be receiving gifts, I would have eaten some berries too.â He said with a chuckle.
âCaptain, that would be highly illogical seeing as the same berries led to the incapacitation of Lieutenant (L/N).â Spock noted matter-of-factly, making you smile a bit. It was well-known that as a Vulcan, his mind-set followed logic to its core, however you couldnât help but interpret his words as being thoughtful. Or maybe, you were just projecting that into his words.
âAnd that is why I am in debt to our wonderful Lieutenant, here.â Kirk said with a dramatic bow. âWithout (Y/N), the Federation would not have gained a whole planet as its ally today.â You couldnât help but laugh as you watched your Captain move across the room like some Shakespearean actor (like running on his tippy-toes and bowing), you decided to play along and twirl dramatically over to him before kissing him on the cheek as though his words just meant the world to you. The scene itself caused an eyebrow-raised look from a clearly confused Spock, the expression alone made you two laugh.
âAm I missing something here?â Spock asked, looking between the two of you.
âNope.â Kirk responded, lazily putting his arm around the Vulcanâs shoulder, âBut you know what you are missing? A nice, hot meal. After such a long day, you two deserve a treat. Go grab something in the mess hall together, Captainâs orders.â He finished with a smirk, making your stomach turn. Why would he say it like that? ...Did he know you liked the Commander? But that would be impossible! You never even mentioned to anyone how you felt about Spock⊠Were you that obvious?
Before you could open your mouth to say anything, you saw that your Captain was already leaving the room. He turned around briefly and gave two thumbs up and an encouraging nod in your direction, but to your surprise the gesture wasnât aimed at you, but rather.... at the Commander.
You heard a throat clear beside you and turned to see that Spock was looking you in the eyes. Like, really looking at you.
âLieutenant...â The way his voice wavered suggested⊠nervousness. He knitted his eyebrows together and his posture became much more stiff, confirming your suspicions. â...do I have your permission to address you by your first name?â
You felt your cheeks burn again at his request. âYou do.â Immediately his body relaxed. âMay I, in turn, address you as Spock?â
âCertainly, (Y/N).â He said smoothly, you could tell he was testing out your name. You liked it.
You felt a nervousness build up within you, unsure where this conversation was leading to until Spock spoke up again.
âI would like to request your presence tonight in the mess hall for social engagement and dinner.â
And with that your heart was blown ten thousand light-years away.
âYou sure our lovely Captain didnât bribe you to say that?â You asked half-jokingly, trying not to sound like you were just melted away.
âI do not need persuasion with money or gifts to spend an evening with you.â
How he could say such things without becoming a puddle of embarrassment amazed you. You felt giddy as a warm smile spread across your lips. âThen yes, I would love to have dinner with you.â
âIâll come by your quarters at eight.â He stated, smiling down at you.
âIâll be waiting.â

Day 17 of TrekTober2020- Other Trek Crossover
I know this is a few days late but I honestly forgot and I really wanted to write something for this. I might continue with these crossovers, I need TOS Bones knocking (metaphorically) some sense into his AOS counterpart. (Also TOS Leonard McCoy is Bones, AOS Leonard McCoy is Leonard)
Trigger Warning for depression, self deprecating thoughts and depressive episodes
Also on AO3
~~
His hands tensed around the PADD, another death, another life he couldn't save. Sickbay hurried around him, nurses running to and fro, doctors collecting in small groups, looking over PADDs.Â
He sighed, letting his head fall into his hands as he took a few moments to process the last few hours.
~~
It had been a strange day, a major ion storm had prevented them from delivering well needed supplies to a new Starfleet colony. They had eight hours to get to the colony, if not, it could be another Tarsus IV.
Jim had been on edge ever since they received the emergency mission, he'd paced the ship dozens of times, eaten until he was sick and bitten his fingernails until they were blunt.Â
His anxieties were only heightened when the Transporter started malfunctioning and engine power decreased so much, they were stuck in the middle of deep space. He'd pushed every aspect of the ship in his control to its limit, sending countless engineering crew to sickbay and even pushing Scotty to, respectfully, also the Captain.
They had spent five hours fully stationary when the Transporter made the familiar sounds of someone beaming up.
After running to investigate, they found something they never thought they'd see. Themselves, from the late Ambassador Spock's universe.
From there, everything had gone into overdrive, with two of almost every main officer, it was chaotic. There were a few positives, new ideas, more staff with different knowledge and, before they knew it, they were racing across the cosmos towards the emergency.
There had been no calm when they arrived, however. Starving people in desperate need of care and raving leaders forgetting their duty was with the people.Â
Everyone was occupied. Most senior staff, especially both versions of Uhura, were busy contacting Starfleet and easing the palpable tension that filled the atmosphere like fog. Sickbay was instantly filled, surgeries one after the other, minor ailments filling up the corridors and overflow wards and every possible room available on the two floors being full.Â
Leonard was losing his cool. He hadn't eaten since their counters arrived, had barely drank anything that wasn't coffee or those sickly energy drinks. His feet were aching and his body swayed, head began to fuzz as the headache he'd been putting off with painkillers hit him.Â
His body gave up and started to crumple in on itself just as a pair of warm and familiar hands caught him as he fell.Â
"Woah there, son," His counterpart said, helping him get steady again as he put down the PADD and led him towards his office. "You need to rest for a while,"
Together, they managed to make their way towards the sofa that lay against the right hand wall, perpendicular to his desk. He sat down with a groan and rubbed his forehead as Bones poured him a glass of water and prepared him some pasta from the replicator.
They waited around in silence for a moment, listening to the far off conversations and happenings of sickbay. He was still processing the day's events, particularly the way he acted in that other universe.Â
Some of the uncanny differences were the fact that he was older on their five year mission, his Joanna was born earlier too. There was a soft happiness that radiated from him, even when they arrived at the crisis and were slowly overwhelmed. Maybe it was because he'd had more time to process the tragedies of his life, the divorce, his dad dying. It had opened up a lot of old wounds, seeing a version of himself so put together, having learnt from all his wrongdoings and not letting himself be defined by them.
"Eat." Bones slammed down a plate of food, breaking off his train of thought. "God knows when you last did that,"
He picked up the fork, it felt heavy in his hand, and started eating. The food was both delicious and meaningless mush in his mouth. His mind had gone from emergency mode to rational thinking as soon as he'd sat down. This happened every time a crisis ended, and every time he promised himself he wouldn't push himself this far.
"Do you do this during every red alert?" His counterpart asked. He settled next to him and sipped his own glass of water, lifting his hand to gently rub his back as he ate.
"Pretty much," Leonard said, there was no use lying to himself.
"Dear god, no wonder you're in such a bad place,"
He stopped eating for a second and turned to look at him, "How am I in a bad place? I'm doing a lot better than I used to,"Â
"How are you doing better?" His voice was calm and steady, while Leonard's was getting tighter and harsher.
"Well," He ran his hand through his hair. "I'm not an active alcoholic anymore, and I try and eat three times a day, and I try and have downtime with my friends twice a week, and I don't do all nighters writing reports,"
He could feel Bones' gaze on his head as he lowered it to look at his feet, which he'd crossed on the sofa beneath him.Â
"I mean, maybe I can't get out of bed some days, and maybe this has made me late to my shift a few times, big deal," He wriggled in his seat and picked at the skin around his nails. "And I guess I don't shower at all some weeks, and I don't really have any hobbies, I don't really feel like I'm here sometimes,"
Bones opened his mouth to say something, but Leonard jumped in with, "But I don't cry every night, I sometimes exercise and try to tidy up and do all my reports and-"
"Feel nothing while you're doing it?"
Leonard panicked, his mouth ran dry, palms went clammy and he couldn't speak a word.Â
"Haven't actually, whole heartedly, freely laughed in god knows when?"
He nodded.
"Struggle to remember, don't find anything enjoyable, wonder why it isn't getting better when it was supposed to?"
Leonard felt the tears pour over onto his cheeks as he nodded continuously, his head falling onto Bones' shoulder as every little thing he'd been holding in for years fell out of him in one go.Â
Bones quietly hushed him, hand consistently circling the worn tunic he was wearing. He had meant to scrub out, but another landing party had come up with the usual scrapes, bruises and broken bones, and he'd been flurried away to help them.Â
"This isn't healthy," Bones continued. "I can't say that I'm the pinnacle of health, physical or mental, but, I know that bottling up even your basic emotions isn't good,"
Leonard didn't dare to raise his head, it felt too heavy with foreboding thoughts.
'You can't open up, it'll scare people,'
'You can't trust him, you've dealt with this for years, you don't need his help'
'You can't handle life now, if you open up and change, then you'll have more to do, you won't be able to handle it'
He felt two hands on his shoulders, shaking him lightly as he blinked and remembered where he was. His breath was coming out shorter as he heard distant instructions, telling him to breathe and only focus on that.
It was a few more minutes, or it could've been hours, before he fully came back to himself. He felt his stomach gurgle and he reached for the cold bowl of pasta, shakily shoveling mouthfuls in.
Bones looked at him and smiled sadly, sympathy and empathy twinkling in his blue eyes. He stood up, going to receive a blanket from a drawer before sitting down and smothering his body in it.
"Now, you're going to have a nap in here, trusting your staff to sort out the few people who remain in sickbay," He instructed, tucking the edges of the blanket under him as he reached for a PADD.
"But I nee-"
"No arguing, just napping,"Â
He sighed and closed his eyes, letting his forehead relax and loosening his body. A subtle headache had just formed, from the aftermath of his tears and breakdown. The darkness came quickly after that, the last thing he remembered being him dropping into the lap of the counterpart.

I Wonât Give You Up
Pairing: TOS and AOS Bones x Reader (yeah I experimented with this one)
Plot: Sybok decides to free Bones' mind of pain, but in the end, it made it all worse. (Based off the scene with Bones and his dad in Star Trek V)
Words: 816
Warning: It's kinda sad...
Tags: @emily-strange [I know you like TOS Bones ;)]
"I don't control minds. I free them," Sybok stated.
McCoy was curious by that statement. How could he say that he freed minds, but everyone seems to be under his control? He took a deep breath and asked, "How?"
He felt Kirk and Spock's eyes on him as Sybok walked up to him. There was nothing wrong with being curious.
"By making you face your pain and draw strength from it. Once that's done, fear cannot stop you," Sybok stated, making McCoy frown.
"It sounds like ...brainwashing to me," he mumbled.
Sybok was silent a moment before whispering, "Your pain is the deepest of all."
"What?" McCoy whispered angrily. He didn't need a Vulcan to tell him that he had some personal pains.
"I can feel it. Can't you?"
You were suddenly on the floor beside him, blood coming out from your side. You were breathing rapidly, trying to hang onto life.
"This is some kind of trick," McCoy snapped angrily.
"Bones," you cried out, making him kneel next to you.
"(Y/N), it's alright, I'll fix you," he whispered before turning to look at Sybok, "Don't do this to me."
"Bones," you whispered while lightly smiling since it was too painful. He grabbed your cold hand and smiled with tears.
You died during the five-year mission by someone stabbing you in the side. It was a decent amount of time ago, but he couldn't simply forget about you. He loved you.
"I'm here, (Y/N). I'm with you."
"It hurts."
"I know, hang on, alright? We'll get you to Sickbay soon and I can patch you up."
"I'm cold, Leonard. I'm so cold," you began to cry.
"Just hang on for me, alright? Please?"
"I-I'll try."
He couldn't imagine what was running through your mind that day, now he probably could. He knew how scared you were. He knew that you didn't deserve to die so young and so violently.
"I-I couldn't get her to sickbay in time," McCoy whispered to Sybok. "She died in my arms that day."
"You did everything you could."
"No!" McCoy yelled while standing up. "I could've done more for her, I could've gotten her to Sickbay in time!"
"You lose patients all the time," Sybok said, finally throwing McCoy to his breaking point.
"She wasn't another patient," he sobbed angrily, "I loved her!"
"Bones?" He heard you call out and he sank back down to his knees.
"I'm still here, how are you feeling, darlin'?"
He knew the answer. He saw the light quickly die from your eyes. Â
"Like I got stabbed," you chuckled. "Hold me, I'm so cold."
It was torture that he had to relive this. He shouldn't have to hold you in his arms, your head against his chest as you were dying. He patched the wound but there was nothing else he could do until he got back to Sickbay. The scent of your hair was the same as that day; coconut.
"Am I going to die?"
"Of course not," he lied while tears fell on top of your head. "You love me too much to leave me in space alone with Jim and Spock."
"I do love you-" a silent, almost non-existent breath, "-too much."
You went limp and he knew that you were gone again. Twice now you have died in your arms and he's as heartbroken as ever, even after all those years.
"Let her go," Sybok told him, making you disappear.
"No, I won't. I can't. I'd rather suffer for millions of years than forget about (Y/N)."
"Once you forget about her then you can reach paradise-"
"To hell with your paradise!" McCoy yelled, "She was my paradise!"
"Have it your way then," Sybok said calmly while leaving.
McCoy looked at where you were and then buried his face in his hands. You were gone and there was nothing he could do about it.
"Bones, she wouldn't want you to agree with him. You did a good thing," Kirk told him softly. "I miss her too. She should be here with us."
"Yeah," McCoy breathed out. "Yeah."
"Doctor," Spock started, "it is possible that you shall meet again in another universe."
"I think that's the nicest thing you said to me," McCoy laughed.
~
(AOS)
You stepped foot on the Enterprise and for some reason headed into Sickbay. Something drew you there.
The door came open and you saw a man wearing a blue uniform, he had brown hair and hazel eyes, but you knew him.
"Leonard Horatio McCoy," you whispered. "Bones!"
The man heard his name and looked at you with realization. "(Y/N)? (Y/N) (L/N). Damn, Spock was right, we are meeting again."
"What happened?"
"Old age," he shrugged with a laugh. "Many years after you died. Oh god, the adventures we had."
"We have time," you grinned while sitting on a biobed. "A lot of time to tell me about them.â

aos!star trek sense8 au
okay so. i had a thought as I was watching star trek 2009. mainly, i was pissed that we got jim being a fucked up troublemaker and spock being an ostracized genius, but we didnât get:
uhura growing up with her huge family devouring information about alien cultures, or bby!sulu learning how to fence or bby!checkov doing spiraling math equations on the wall of his bedroom or little scotty running around with an outrageous brogue and a penchant for taking apart the replicator, or bones being adorably, earnestly caring
fuck that noise. I want baby-faced versions of the whole bridge crew.
thus, the sense8 AU. Iâve never watched sense8 but Iâm 90% sure theyâre all supposed to be the same age, which is alright. i can do that. it just means that they know each other a little differently; some things happen earlier or different, but thatâs fine.
oh my god this is going to be ridiculous. okay. again, never seen sense8, never will, so iâm pulling this out of thin air
                                                         â
clusters are so rare no one knows about them at this point; there are myths and legends from the eugenics warsâthe very wars which essentially wiped them out, actuallyâbut for the most part, everyone has forgotten.
very rarely will someone from a cluster speak about their experiences, but whenever they do, itâs written off as part and parcel of mingling with telepathic alien races.
(little do they know itâs the one form of telepathy completely indigenous to Earth)
â
Spock is the most powerful telepath of his generation because of his uniquely human experience fielding the emotions of six other people.
â
nyota is five when she decides she wants to learn to speak all the other languages, because then she can talk to pavel and spock with their words. she learns to speak swahili with her mother and father and aunts and uncles and cousins and grandparents at home, and standard at school. having to translate things in her mind because people donât know her language, her words, is hard. and if she can keep pavel and spock from having to do that, she will.
â
nyota is the reason they all join starfleet, in the end. she meets a recruiter at school when theyâre seven years old. when the woman starts to talk about experiencing alien cultures and first contacts and languages she excitedly pulls everyone to her. they all sit bunched up at this womanâs feet and learn about starfleet for the first time, together. maybe they donât all know what they want to do yet, or even that this is what they want.
but nyota wins out, in the end. she always does.
â
when Jim breaks the security on Frankâs car, ribs still aching from the night before, Hikaru slips into the passenger seat. they donâtânone of them really know how to respond when things like this happen to jim, when jim pulls these stunts
(sometimes, Spock can get through to him, speak to his anger. but spock is...having his own problems today)
but when Jim frantically pulls out of their driveway and down the dusty half-road, only thinking awayawayaway Hikaru grins at him and whoops as they push sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety
then the cop pulls up alongside them and he gets nervous. jim throws him a wild grin and yanks the wheel to the side, crashing through the gates and heading straight for a ravine.
âJim,â Hikaru says in a panic. âJim, jim ,jim stop the car! Stop the car! JIM!â
theyâre 20 feet away from the edge when sulu makes a desperate, useless grab for the wheel and Jim finally gives in. everyone steps onto the edge of the cliff as he frantically grabs at sand and dust, living only because his friends family cluster are screaming at him.
they huddle around him in shock as he pushes to his feet and mouths off to the police officer; scotty giggles at his nonchalance and nyota thwaps him on the back of his head and leo wraps him in a hug, careful of his ribs.
â
everyone piles into pavelâs room the nights his uncle tells stories. exciting adventures with spies and snipers and assassins.
â
nyota spends quiet afternoons with spock on his balcony under the hot vulcan sun, pouring over whatever data has drawn Spockâs attention this week. he helps her with her pronunciation and lets her practice golic scripture on his pads. vulcan is her third language she ever learns.
â
Hikaru goes on hikes with Scotty through the still-preserved highlands, stopping every five minutes to pester him for the names of the plants. when they first start out, there are a lot of âi donât knows,â or asking of scottyâs mother, but eventually Scotty starts learning them ahead of time, just to see Hikaruâs grin as they discuss foliage patterns and pollination.
â
Jim, Spock and Pavel will spend hours debating mathematical theories, wearing out the wrist of whoeverâs room theyâre in. every once in a while pavel will say something that gets and eyebrow raise out of spock and a look of utter shock from Jim, because he proven them completely wrong in an effortless manner
â
Tarsusâ
when Jim understands whatâs happening, what Governor Kodos means, itâsâfuck. he just. he just shuts down, starts grabbing as many people as he can, other kids, mainly.
and everyone else freezes right where they are. in the middle of class and fencing practice and church and after bolting upright in the middle of the night.
Spock initiates an emergency shutdown of his pod and rushes up the stairs, politely requesting (demanding) that the instructor contact his father immediately.
Pavel jumps out of bed and bangs on his Uncleâs door, begging him to open up, please open up, you still have friends on the federation council, yes?
Nyota pulls the...enhanced radio transmitter Scotty helped her build out and immediately breaks into contacts starfleet commandâs private frequency to begin relaying everything she has so far, as Jim gets it, and Scotty sits right next to her, helping find new ways to break in every time starfleet shuts them out until they have to listen, please listen, this is not a joke!
Leo and Hikaru...they stay with Jim, as he scrambles through the facility where Kodos penned them in to be slaughtered; grabbing a phaser off of a corpse and shooting the guards who chase after them; kicking the legs out from under one who gets too close; keeping track of little Kevin whoâs screaming and crying for his mother.
(instead of waiting six months until their scheduled check-in to find the remains of the Tarsus IV colony, Starfleet finds out about the massacre of 4,000 federation citizens almost as itâs happening; finds out from, oddly enough, the Vulcan ambassador to Earth, a former incredibly classified russian special ops agent for the United Earth, and one very persistent child in the African Confederacy with a souped-up radio communicator.
it still take three weeks for the nearest ship to warp to Tarsus, near the edge of uncharted space, and rescue the remaining colonists)
Hikaru advises Jim on whether they can eat what few plants they find; Leo uses his rudimentary medical knowledge to help patch up the injured children. Nyota and Spock take turns helping Jim translate for the young Vulcan among them, young enough that her Standard is not yet perfected.
Spock demands that his father demand information on the rescue mission, so that he may coordinate with Jim on how long they have and where to meet the survivors that Jim is slowly, carefully, gathering.
â
the minute Jim is settled in the med-bay of the starfleet vessel carrying him and the other 73 survivors of Kodosâ condemned colonists, he breaks. break in half, breaks down sobbing, curls up into a ball and just lets himself feel, again.
all six of the others pile around him on the biobed, surrounding him, until all he can see are other parts of himself.
â
Jim is fourteen years old. There are six other people living in his head. He has survived a massacre and a genocide and his mother isâ
His mother isâ
Not coming. Sheâs not coming. Sheâs sending him back to Frank, who chased Sam away and let Jim go to Tarsus. She barely even looks at him when she sentences him to another six years of terror.
Before, he might have panicked. Now he just...shuts down again, steals a datapad, and hacks into starfleetâs communications with his mother and frank. Jim-as-Frank says heâs beaming to Risa to pick Jim up as soon as possible, and Jim-as-Winona signs off on it.
With Leo yelling at him and Nyota reminding him he can just come stay with her family and Pavel saying my uncle would be happy toâ, Jim steps onto the transporter pad and beams down to Risa, hastily making his way out of the starfleet outpost and into the crushing crowds of the pleasure planet, and disappears.
â
They all worry about Jim, and keep tabs on him, but they have their own lives to live, too. Even if they never give up on pulling him to one of them before he gets himself killed.
â
Pavel gets admitted to starfleet academy when theyâre fifteen and Nyota is not jealous! No, no, sheâs not jealous, shut up, Hikaru. And itâs fine, anyway, because they all know the reason half of them are planning on joining starfleet (at least, right then) is because of her. So there.
And when he gets homesick his second week there, Nyota plops herself down on his bed and babbles with him in Russian (her fourth language) until the ache in his chest recedes.
â
Hikaru and Pavel are the first of them to meet in person, because Hikaru lives in San Francisco. Whenever Pavel is granted leave from the Academy, Hikaru shows up to drag him surfing, or to his favorite restaurant, or to meet his parents.
â
Six months after Pavel starts at Starfleet, Leo is needling Spock about the Kohlinar so much that he actually seeks out his mother to ensure Leo is wrong, that he is not needlessly repressing his âhumanityâ at the expense of a real part of himself.
Leo stands there in shock, glee and utter disbelief as Spock tells the old racist bastards at the Vulcan Science Academy where to put it; just claps him on the shoulder on his way out.
(Jim quietly grins to himself as he listens in)
(Nyota high-fives Pavel, Hikaru and Scotty; five down, two to go)
â
Given the nature of Vulcan secondary education and Spockâs desire to be a science officer, he tests out of basically the first two years of classes. Then he does such an exemplary job that he earns an officerâs commission right after graduation under fucking Pike, are you kidding me?? Nyota screeches and jumps up and down and generally makes an emotional scene while Spock suffers.Â
â
When they are seventeen, Leo gets his girlfriend Jocelyn pregnant.Â
What.
â
After Tarsus, the times that they all get together are few and far between; but when Joanna is born they all stop what theyâre doing to gather around Jocelynâs biobed and coo, or congratulate, or tease Leo for being the one to have a kid, come on, I really had money on Jim.
He smiles at Jocelyn and stares in awe at Joanna and feels how much they all love him, how much they already love his daughter (not their daughter; not yet).
â
When theyâre eighteen, Scotty and Hikaru and Nyota are finally (!!!! Nyota is so excited) going to Starfleet Academy, to join Pavel in his third year and catch Spock in passing whenever heâs on leave.
Before they leave, Nyota stands in the center of her sisters and cousins and aunts and nieces and sobs, happy to be one step closer to starfleet but unashamedly grieving for the stage of her life that sheâs leaving behind. And she decides then that sheâs going to start going by Uhura, her family name, so that she can take them with her into the stars.
â
Jim is, oddly enough, the one to sit up with Leo on those long nights when Joanna just. wonât. sleep. He quietly chats him up and stares in awe at this baby girl who came into the world peacefully and wanted, if not fully expected. This baby girl whose parents will never raise a hand to her and has a dozen people willing to lay down their lives for her and, more importantly, take her in if god forbid it becomes necessary.
He whispers sweet nothings she canât hear to her and Leo throws an arm over his shoulders, grateful and missing him even though he right there.
â
His feet hit the ground on Earth for the first time in four years two weeks later, after doing a few things he shut the others out for (he and spock are the only ones who bothered to learn how to do that) to get onto a shuttle headed straight back...home.
Not home because he lived there Before, but home because thatâs where all the other pieces of him are living.
Because he a masochist (shut up, Leo) he acquires a hover bike and zips over to Iowa, and starts haunting Riverside, Iowa. He lets the corn and small-town bullshit crawl under his skin and takes it out on anyone stupid enough to provoke him when heâs drunk.
Heâs completely smashed when Leo finally admits heâs going to be a doctor and tries to call him sawbones; only, the first part doesnât quite make it out of his mouth.
LeoâBonesâgroans because the others are never gonna let this go.
(he is correct on that front)
â
The others are trying to give him space, he knows, but theyâre also not at all subtle about their excitement at his being so close for the first time.
Hikaru, Scotty, Pavel, and Uhura orbit each other in San Fran, with Spock the occasional comet passing through their system, together in person, for real, and so eager to share that with the last two of them whoâve never met any of them in person.
They descend on they newly-christened Bones for winter break that first semester (well, actually, itâs Pavelâs seventh semesterâi swear to god Chekov iâm gonna knock that smirk off your face) to meet Jocelyn and Joanna.Â
And god, they spoil that girl. Almost a year old, toddling around and bumping into everything and so curious about everything.
Spock couldnât quite swing leave time to go with them, but they video comm him a few times so Joanna can see him, too.
Jocelyn is quietly unnerved by these people her partner is so close with, who he talks about all the time but has apparently never...met in person before? Who call him Bones, of all things. And they all take the time to talk to her, get to know her and try and connect, but itâs overwhelming.
And then Uhura sits Bones down in person and lays out all the reasons he should transfer to the Starfleet Academy to finish out his med degree; they have a track laid out to get your doctorate and become an officer, youâre majoring in xenobiology anyway and thereâs no better place for that, the opportunities for residencies will be so much better, the trauma surgeons at the academy are unmatched, andâ
and weâll be there. Joanna can grow up with all of us around to help.
Six down, one to go.
â
The first time Hikaru sits at the helm of a shuttle, he doesnât stop grinning the rest of the day. Botany is his first and best love, but by god heâs going to qualify to be a pilot, too. Maybe someday heâll get to fly something like the Enterprise.
â
Scotty has taken engineering by storm. All his professors have an opinion on him, and itâs always love âem or hate âem. Heâs absolutely brilliant or completely mad, should be given the flagship at the earliest opportunity or marooned somewhere he canât do any real damage.
â
Uhura comes in knowing eight languages: Swahili, Standard, Vulcan, Russian, French, one of the Rhiannsu (Romulan) dialects, Tellaran, and rudimentary Andoran. She knows exactly what sheâs going to do and has been preparing for it her whole life.
The rest of them grin to each other when they start hearing about Uhuraâs exploits in astounding the communications track time and time again.
â
Spock lets them know before anyone else that Captain Pike has been re-assigned to Starfleet Academy for a round of teaching...and that Spock himself will also finally be accepting the Science trackâs increasingly desperate demands that he teach.
Heâll also be offering courses in communications; ones Uhura will have to take before graduation. A clear conflict of interest.
(Uhura is ecstatic; Spock is concerned, but will only volunteer the incredibly personal information when it becomes relevant)
â
When Uhura sees the sign-up for a summer tour of the shipyards in Riverside, she smirks to herself and signs the fuck up, then goes directly to Jim to needle him about it.
Jim sighs and orders another drink, but...finally getting to see one of them in person after all these years...something settles in his chest that hasnât sat right since he was just a kid.
â
Uhura is practically vibrating as she bursts into the club. Practically half their class is stuffed around chair and in booths, and she makes a brief stop by some of her friends, but sheâs on a mission now.
She can feel a subtle itch under her skin that means Jim is so close. So close, after so long. After being so alone for so long.
He doesnât quite understand how unwilling sheâs going to be to let him go, once she has him in her clutches.
They practically run into each other next to the stools by the bar and she fights the urge to throw her arms around him. He looks breathless and a little disbelieving, even though he knew this was coming for months, until a bright and easy smile breaks out on his face. The one she hasnât seen since they were still kids.
âJim,â she laughs, giddy, and he laughs back at her, leaning onto the bar. She sidles up next to him, as close as his current general aura of âdonât touch meâ will allow, and just...breathes, for a second.Â
Heâs definitely drunk (although, when isnât he, these days) but still lucid. âIâm glad youâre here,â he says softly, so low she almost canât hear it over the throbbing music.
âIâm glad youâre here,â she shoots back, still unable to let go of her smile.
Theyâre still just basking in each otherâs physical presence (after all these years, she still sometimes has no idea what to do with Jim Kirk, except be there with him), when asshole security track cadet Hendorff and his pals make their way up to the bar behind the pair of them.
She can feel the way Jim perks up at the tension in their figures and sighs internally.
âThis townie isnât bothering you, right?â He asks with a smirk, like, what, he has the authority to protect her?
âOh, beyond belief, but itâs nothing I canât handle,â Uhura turns toward Jim and tries to make it clear that he has no business interrupting their conversation, but Jim...
âYou can handle me, thatâs an invitation,â He smirks at her and knows exactly what heâs doing.
And she has half a mind to let him do it; if he wants to get his ass beat thatâs his business.
âHey, farmboy,â but then Hendorff lays his hands on Jim. âMaybe you canât count, but there are four of us and one of you.â
He lays his hands on Jim. Heâs interrupted their first meeting in person after nineteen years living in each otherâs minds, and laid his hands on her cluster-mate.
Jim lets his gaze flit to her for half a second and then steps into Hendorffâs space, clapping him on the cheek. âSo go get some more guys and then itâll be an even fight.â
Uhura rolls her eyes and her shoulders and knows from Jimâs experience the exact moment the tension will spill over into violence.
Hendorff draws back and decks Jim, who falls into the bar; as he makes his next move, before Jim can fully turn around, Uhura draws her heeled boot up and buries it in Hendorffâs stomach, flinging him back into the crowd.
The other three look at her in shock before Jim draws their attention again and they startâgod, brawling is the only word for it. Flinging wild punches and bottles and chairs.
When one of them gets Jim in a lock Uhura swings behind him and pinches the nerve on his shoulder, just like Spock taught them, and he goes down like a light.
But the other two still get four good hits in while sheâs doing it, and between the alcohol and the concussion one of them manages to fling him onto a table while Uhura goes for the other one.
Unfortunately a whistle pierces the din before she can kick his ass.
Captain Pike is standing at the entrance to the club, staring in disbelief at the mess theyâve made of the place, and of Jim. âOutside, all of you,â he orders.
Uhura seethes at the lost time; she didnât even have the chance to make her annual pitch for him to join starfleet. But she also doesnât make her way out with the others, instead grabbing some napkins from a nearby table and hurrying over to Jim, whoâs in that fun in-between state between conscious and unconscious heâs so very familiar with.
âI can feel you judging me from over here,â he mumbles, then lolls his head back to say something about whistling to Captain Pike.
She dunks one of the napkins in a glass of water and starts wiping at his face automatically, until Captain Pike clears his throat.
âCadet, you know this man?â He asks pointedly. God, sheâs going to get court-martialed for this, but she looks down at Jim before she answers. Heâs been off Starfleetâs radar since he was fourteen, and has never been keen to get back on it.
But he sort of shrugs at her, so she looks back up. Pike is giving her a bemused eyebrow raise sheâs pretty sure he got from Spock as she says, âYes, sir. This is Jim Kirk, my...â she doesnât even know the word for it. Cluster-mate? Bonded? Thereâs no true word for it in Standard, or even Vulcan.
âBoyfriend?â Captain Pike finishes dryly, but then watches as they both gag. Uh, no.
âNo, sir, Jim is one of my...bond-mates.â She grimaces. âI donât know the exact term for it, but thatâs close enough, sir.â
âWell, Cadet Uhura, if you donât know the word than it the word must not exist,â Captain Pike says, and she fights the urge to flush.Â
Decides to raise her chin instead. âThank you, sir.â Deeming his face clean enough for now, she hauls Jim off the table and hands him the rest of the napkins. She draws the line at stuffing things up his nose for him.Â
âWhy donât we all sit down for a minute and discuss what the hell just happened here,â he suggest-orders.
â
Spock has a very interesting comm message from Captain Pike the next morning, and fights the very human urge to rub his temples in exasperation. Uhura is supposed to be his partner in sensibility, not Jim's back-up in bar fights.
Perhaps they all bring out different sides of one another.
â
Uhura screeches at Jim when he shows up at the shipyard the next morning.
âAre you kidding me? All I had to do, all this time, was dare you to join Starfleet? Are you six fucking years old?!?â
Jim grins at her, and is incredibly lucky theyâre lifting off so she canât get up and strangle him.
â
Of course Jim joined for Them. But itâs funnier to let Uhura think Pike could just dare him into it.

Two Ships Passing in the Night {1}
Series Masterlist
Spock x fem!Reader then Bones x fem!Reader
Second Person POV reader named because typing y/n is driving me nuts.
AOS
Summary: You would never admit your feelings for Spock, even at the expense of your own heart. You had known going into this relationship that it was casual, but you hadnât expected the consequences that stemmed from this relationship or where life would take you.
A/N: I told you all that I would make it back to Star Trek again. This one has taken on a mind of its own and morphed in ways I was not planning.. OOC at times. Trying something different with the imagine style. Giving the OC a name and all that but writing in second person. I saw this in a post somewhere about people hating y/n, which if Iâm honest. I do too. I barely picture myself in inserts and create a different character and read it from their point of view. Let me know what you guys think.
Warnings: Mentions of abortion, pregnancy, minor swears, mentions of injury.
Word Count: 1,223
You had fallen in love with Spock. You knew that much, even after you had agreed with him that it was nothing more than physical. For you that had changed, and you damned yourself for it. Then the battle happened, the betrayals, the destruction of Vulcan. Everything changed, you just didnât realize how much until you were lying in a medical bed.
The Enterprise crew was shaken after the battle with Nero. You found yourself in an unfamiliar medical room, it was a hospital. You tried to take in everything, until Doctor Leonard âBonesâ McCoy walked through the door. The two of you had become close friends, thanks to your mutual tolerance of Captain James T. Kirk. As a member of command you often found yourself wanting to throttle the man, Leonard just generally had that feeling. It lead to a great deal of bonding between the two of you. It had all started when you walked into the medbay, arm slung around Jim, holding him upright.
âLook, Bones, she can carry me.â Jim said, his head lolling a bit, Leonard glanced up looking at the injuries on the Captain as you set him in a medical bed.
âFinally, someone who can kick your ass.â Leonard muttered, winking to you before starting to work on Jim.
Leonard was shaken as he entered the hospital room. You believed that he had been through more than the rest of the crew. He would never admit it, but healing people would take its toll on him, especially when he would not be successful. Â His hazel eyes meeting yours, for moment they held the softness you were used to, but they hardened quickly.
âWhat in the hell did you think you were doing putting yourself in danger?â He snapped, closing the door of your hospital room, his eyes alight with a rage that he normally reserved for Jim.
âMy job?â You asked, your arm in a sling, your eyes wide as the doctor began to huff.
âYour jobâŠ..you think this is about your job?â Leonard asked, his eyes searching your face, quickly flicking back and forth. Looking for some kind of reaction from you.
âBones, what has you all worked up?â You winced as he sat next to you on the bed.
âDarlinâ, have you noticed anything odd with yourself lately?â He asked gently.
You raised an eyebrow at the man in front of you. âBeing in the middle of an intense battle and witnessing a planetâs destructionâŠ.. Yeah, nothing to make me feel weird lately.â
Leonard sighed, âJen, listen to me. The past few months, have you felt different, physically?â
You sighed, trying to think of something you had noticed. I had my heart broken, but you know that. âBones, just spit it out. Am I dying tomorrow? Iâll have to get my dress uniform pressed if thatâs the case.â
Leonard groaned. âGoddamnit Jen, youâre pregnant.â
You froze. That couldnât be right. You couldnâtâŠâŠ Yes, you could, very much so, be pregnant. You stared at him. âBonesâŠâŠâ You began.
âDonât worry. I didnât tell anyone, at least anyone from the crew. The babyâs fine. Youâre four months along. Weâre going to need to get you started on supplements to manage the Vulcan genetic needs and keep you safe.â He said softly, his hand reaching out to yours on the bed. His thumb stroked the back of your hand.
âThank you.â You whispered.
âNo problem, but you should tell him.â He began. âHe deserves to know he is going to become a father.â
You sighed, he was right. Which you did not want to admit to him. âHeâs going to Vulcan. He told me yesterday. He came here to say goodbye.â
âHe might stay if he knows.â Leonard tried to convince you.
âNo, his mind is made up. There is no trying to change his mind.â You said, thinking about the man in question. He was determined to be a part of rebuilding his planet. He was driven, which was one of the qualities that had attracted you to him. You had slept together once, he had needs, you were willing, and that was enough.
Knowledge of the child you were now carrying was jarring for you. He wanted to aid with Vulcan, as a young male of the species he had felt that he could aid in the repopulation of the species. His words, which now felt odd to you with the circumstances, but the child would be 75% human. The 25% of Vulcan genetics probably werenât enough to consider the child to be a part of the New Vulcan. You knew that Spock had a tough time being half human. You werenât sure you wanted to subject your child to that scrutiny. Your brain continued to spin at rapid speed, you were finally pulled out of your thoughts by Leonardâs voice.
âJen, are you here?â His hand had moved from yours and come up to your face.
âYeah, Iâm here.â You whispered.
âYou have options.â Leonard said, his hand leaving your cheek. âAdoption is better than it ever was. AbortionâŠ.â His voice dropped off as you flinched. âDarlinâ itâs options, Iâm not going to tell you what choice to make. This is all up to you. As a doctor, I have to tell you the options.â
You glanced up, meeting his blue eyes. âIâm going to keep it.â You answered.
He nodded, something you couldnât recognize in his eyes. âWeâll get you started on supplements, get you in for OB/GYN services. Weâll need to see what we need to do to get you back on the Enterprise. We might have to hire another doctorâŠâ
You glanced up at him. You hadnât told him, you hadnât told him. In the few days before you were transferred back into his care, you guessed that he had fought with the hospitals to be in charge of the Enterprise crewâs care. âYes, to the first two.â You murmured.
âThe first two?â He asked.
âIâm not coming back to the Enterprise. I was offered to be captain of the Defiance. Given the circumstances, I think Iâm going to take it.â Leonard remained silent, waiting for you to continue. âItâs a diplomatic ship. There will be less danger than a five year exploratory mission.â
Leonard sighed. âI wonât deny that there is definitely a greater deal of safety on that mission. But, that could just be due to you being the captain.â He smirked.
âLeonard McCoy, are you saying bad things about the great James Kirk?â You joked.
âConsidering that most of the crew is in a medical bed, Iâd think I have a lot of bad things to say about James Kirk right now.â He grumbled, âI will miss you though.â He added.
âIâll miss you too, Bones.â You answered, reaching out and lightly squeezing his hand. He held your hand for a moment longer than necessary and released it with a sigh.
âIâll see you tomorrow, Captain.â He rose from your bed and made his way to the door, he closed the door behind himself, letting out huge breath he had been holding. He glanced back at you, in your hospital bed, one arm in a sling, the other hand resting on your abdomen and he couldnât stop the pang in his chest as he watched you.

So I donât want to get into a huge retrospective of how 2020 was for me, because itâs personal and I think we can all agree things have been bad. So instead Iâd like to talk about great video games I got into in 2020!!! These games didnât necessarily come out in 2020 just things I discovered and Iâd like to talk about my top 10 faves
1.      The first best video game I discovered in 2020 is the entire Trails Series (I played all of them in 2020, cold steel, ao, zero, and Sky). Initially I played Cold Steel 1 because my friend told me it was like âPlaying Code Geass the animeâ. The story was pretty easy to get into of a guy going to military school and youâre placed in the special class for commoners and nobles when thereâs a huge class divide in your country. From there it had some basic anime tropes like a dating simulator like thing and various cliched characters, like the tsundere, the guy whoâs trying to get everybody to work, the music kid, and the noble, you know?
But Cold Steel wasnât clichĂ© in the least bit. I played it after surgery recovery so I was in a lot of pain and out of my mind, but each character had depth, the entire world was fleshed out and after each game more of the story and the villains were revealed, secret robot technologies were given to the main characters and they slowly became more and more powerful after that.
I wanted to know more and more about the world so I played the first series trails in the sky and the Japanese only series, Zero and Ao, and they were even better. Not only that but in this JRPG there were canon gay characters that had traits to their character besides âIâm gay.â There were a lot of lesbians for me to pick and choose between as faves.
Not only that but I find none dating sim video games difficult cuz I get easily frustrated and rage quit. Cold Steel was turn based combat and never made me feel like rage quitting because they had a function called âRetry but easierâ where if you died you could start the same battle but make it easier. That made it so I only had to die five or so times on things I was really stuck on and then I could move on with the story. And the game never felt like a grind fest and I could make the game faster in combat.
This series I may have discovered in 2020 but itâs become just as beloved to me as any other series. Itâs one of my faves.
2.      My second favorite game in 2020 was 13 sentinels : Aegis Rim. I love time travel so much and everytime a new time travel anime or game comes out I get super excited. Aegis Rim was a game that had all sorts of cool tropes, like time travel, memory loss, androids, different realities, and psychic dreams and it just sounded cool. Not only that but there were 13 different protagonists to play and I had seen it reviewed in LGBT+ articles, saying it had a canon gay character and a canon nonbinary character! It was a very fun game and part of the story followed a point and click formula and the other half followed a kinda strategy blowing up giant robot monsters formula, and I enjoyed it. Also the music and the art was amazing.
3.      The House in Fata Morgana was my third favorite game I discovered in 2020!!! It was a visual novel I had gotten in 2019 but never started because âThey didnât have anime eyes so IDK if itâll be interesting.â I had seen a lot of horror visual novel people review it though with stellar reviews. I ended up playing it when I was sick and man was it an amazing story. It gave me a lot of respect for people who write short stories that wrap up nicely, and a lot  of the characters were flawed but I really enjoyed reading their stories.  The story was pretty basic in the beginning of a maid telling you several different stories of the previous owners of the mansion she worked in, and the tragedies that befell them throughout her time there, and I really liked the sort of tragedy feel. One of the stories reminded me of Greek tragedies like Oedipus, and as the story got deeper and deeper and connected plot threads of the previous owners it became very cool. Also the game was very LGBT+ friendly with trans and bi characters and possibly an aro character too???
4.      Hades was my fourth favorite game in 2020!!! A lot of people have already talked about Hades before and what itâs about but Iâd like to talk about why I liked it. As mentioned before I have a problem with video games that rely on skill. I get so frustrated that I either start yelling or crying because I donât believe that the muscle memory will ever get into me or that Iâll ever be good enough to get past the hard part. Itâs incredibly distressing and it makes me feel bad because Iâm like âwhy canât I do a simple thing other people can easily do?â Hades is one of the few games that taught me that eventually I will succeed, and the muscle memory will come to me. As you probably know Hades has god mode which increases your damage resistance every time you loose. I got to the max god mode very quickly of 80% and for about 10 runs even that wasnât enough to beat the first boss and I was incredibly frustrated. I was like âthey should have raised it to 90% cuz if even their worst players couldnât beat the boss on easy mode then theyâre missing out.â But as people have probably told you, Hades rewards failure. Each run you learn a bit more and get better skills and friendships with people due to grinding. And eventually I stuck to it and beat the first boss, and then all the other bosses. The muscle memory finally hit and I beat Hades and got the true ending and Iâm really glad the developers made it accessible enough that even the worst players could beat it and Iâm glad they rewarded failure.
5.      My next favorite is Chaos;Child, which wasnât made in 2020, but I did discover it in 2020. Itâs another horror visual novel but by the people who did Steins;Gate. I absolutely adore Steins;Gate because of the time travel so I was curious about the other games in the series. Everyone said Chaos;Child was the murder mystery of what Steins;Gate did to time travel and they were right. It was a psychic murder mystery story and although it was very gorey it was very fun and I really liked the characters
6.      Sixth favorite was Café Enchante a new otome dating sim released in 2020! You run a coffeshop for monsters basically and I adored it!!! I was a little worried before I got it that it would be boring because what kind of plot can you make in a coffeeshop? But it was very cute and I loved the monsters and the lore. Despite my misunderstanding the entire game did not take place in the coffeeshop and instead went into various monster worlds and expanded on the lore of each world in each route. The art was wonderful and I just love fake monster lore about Fae and beasts and angels and stuff and it was just a wonderful game and is one of my new fave otome titles.
7.      I played Ai: the somnium files in 2020! I knew it would be a favorite of the year because it was made by the same people who did the zero escape series. It had a very different tone of the zero escape series of course, instead of being about psychics itâs about the inner workings of the mind. You play a detective going into peopleâs psycheâs to try to catch a murderer basically. It reminded me a lot of ID;invaded an anime that I think came out this year? Anyway it was a cool story and I liked the graphics but I did not like the timed missions. Without a guide I would have died.
8.      The dark horse of 2020 was Untitled Goose Game. I did not expect to get it but my friend gifted to me and I hadnât played it yet. And as everyone can tell you itâs just a fun time harassing people as a goose. It has 2 player mode so my sister and I played it together and it was great. I liked feeling like grand theft robbers and saying âBOOK ITâ as we stole peopleâs stuff.
9.      My ninth favorite game I played in 2020 was Little Busters! Itâs by the same people who did Clannad so I knew I would be crying by the end. Clannadâs team is known for their great story telling and heart wrenching characters. Itâs about a team of friends who start a baseball team and then it gets sad and time loop-y from there. I played Clannad too in 2020 but it was a little too homophobic for me to let it make it to this list and I donât remember any homophobia in little busters, so little busters gets its spot.
10.  Finally we get to Persona 5 Royal. I didnât play much of the original persona 5 besides at my friends apartment so I was able to finally have a copy of this game on my own!!! I loved the idea of going into mean peopleâs minds and changing their hearts so they could understand the wrong that they did, it was just a good concept. I also loved that Persona 5 royal added a safety mode so you can loose and yet not die. It was a great game of 2020 and it only makes it so low because I spent way too many hours on it (135) and it was a great amazing game that I loved and enjoy talking about but would not replay because itâs just so long and Iâm not quite sure what would be different on  replay. Also Iâm sad that you canât date the boys because I love them. They are good beans. Either way though Iâd recommend it if you havenât played before and it was very fun, and still one of the best games of 2020.
If you want me to talk about any of these games in more depth instead of just a short review tell me!!!

AoS McKirk Recs
At the request of @fireinmywoodsâ Iâm finally getting around to making a McKirk rec post, which Iâve been wanting to do for a while. All these fics are McKirk endgame. This isnât organized in any way whatsoever, and is also not a comprehensive list. I mostly just scrolled through my bookmarks and picked the things that werenât outright porn. I always wish reccers would include their own notes along with the authorâs summaries so... I did that. Hope yâall donât mind. Iâll try not to be too spoilery, but I think itâs valuable to see what other fans like about a fic. Also, always heed the authorâs notes, warnings, and tags. Definitely check out other fics by these authors, because Iâm mostly not reccing a bunch by each person in order to keep this post slightly less long. And please consider leaving comments on the fics!
The palimpsest verse by fireinmywoods (series is 100k words)
Authorâs summary (of the first fic in the series): âSkip to the point, Jim. The sooner you spit it out, the sooner I can refuse and get back to work.â âItâs really no big deal,â Jim says as the door slides closed behind them. âI just need you to come down to Hearth with usâŠas my husband.â The Enterprise has been sent to negotiate reaccession to the Federation with an isolationist religious group known as the Kindred. While there, Jim notices that some of the children seem to be gravely ill. The problem is, the Kindred practice faith healing and refuse to allow a doctor to be brought in. So Jim does what he does best: he improvises.
Gotta start with the gal whose fault this list is! When I read the first fic in this verse I was really at a low point in my McKirk obsession. This fic really brought me back into the fold in a big way. The whole series is just very very full of love. I ALMOST read one of the sequels first but thank god I heeded Emâs warnings to read palimpsest before reading the other fics. Seriously. You need to go into the thing unspoiled. Anyhow, if you want Jim and Bones way way super in love, for sure read this fic.(And listen, if you donât want to read it because you hate fake marriage please read it anyway. I dislike fake marriage and I read it and loved it. Give it a shot, I beg you.)
Manhattan (Weeks Gone By)Â by blcwriter (8k words)
Authorâs Summary: For the jim_and_bones St. Patrickâs Day challenge, because only I can turn a flash fic prompt into 8000 words. I haven't been able to stop listening to Frightened Rabbitâs âIn Living Colourâ  from their Winter of Mixed Drinks album as I was trying to figure out what I wanted to say for my next story, and then this challenge came along, and literal writer! is literal, so, there you go.The prompt was "Manhattan," and the boys wanted to be married in modern times and run a bar in the Village with the whole gang involved.  Non-happy-fun-times ensue before things sort of resolve.
I love a lot of blcwriterâs stuff, but this one is my favorite. Itâs a modern day au, and Jim and Bonesâs marriage is in trouble. Itâs a really wonderful look at people in a long-term relationship struggling to keep it alive and wondering whether to just let it die.
Something so right by blcwriter (series is 13k words)
Authorâs Summary (of the first fic in the series): "Don't say we aren't right for each other, the way I see it is.. we aren't right for anyone else."
Okay, I said I wouldnât rec lots of things by one author and this is my one exception. I HAD to rec this one as well as Manhattan. An utterly fantastic modern day chef au. Jim and Bones knew each other at culinary school but now find each other again as real grown-ups. And the sequel is a Christmas fic! Also contains Jewish Jim, which Iâm always a slut for.
That Monogamy Thing by silverlining99 (11k words)
Authorâs Summary: Jim thought he was doing it RIGHT.
I also need to mention the fic The Thing About Realizing You Are In Love With Your Best Friend by JenTheSweetie because these two fics are so identical in premise I can only assume they were written for the same prompt. Theyâre both great, but I slightly prefer That Monogamy Thing, so it got top billing. Both fics are set during the five year mission, or at least theyâre set on the Enterprise. Basically, Jim and Bones start sleeping together and Jim assumes they must be now in a Monogamous Relationship(TM) and gets with the monogamy program. Of course, at no point did anyone say they were in a monogamous relationship, so Bones is not on the same page, shall we say. Itâs a classic âmiscommunication causes delicious but short-lived angstâ kinda vibe. You get it.
The Repairs verse by shinychimera and Yeomanrand (series is 69k words)
Authorsâ Summary (of the first fic in the series): Â Young Jim Kirk is unstable and self-destructive, Leonard McCoy is withdrawn and wary, and the obstacles to surviving their first term at Starfleet Academy are not easy to overcome. A dark and brutal tale of the tangled borders between healing and hurting, where hard choices between emotions and ethics have far-reaching consequences; dealing with abuse and alcoholism, affection and neglect, piercings and bar fights, hot and cold sex, complicated questions of consent, and loyalty and love between people who aren't comfortable with either. A whole new spin on "I want my pain, I need my pain."
This one is kinda...whump porn. Like, read the tags. JIm is suuuper messed up and traumatized but sometimes thatâs what you need in a fic, yanno? Itâs an Academy fic that deals heavily with Jim having been violently abused as a child, and him growing to trust Bones while also kind of learning how to be an adult, rather than living life as the abused child heâs spent so long being. The abuse in this fic was not sexual in nature, jsyk.
En Promenade by newsbypostcard (series is 86k words)
Authorâs Summary: After three months of weekend bar-hopping and a slow process of elimination -- with finding the right bar, that was, and tragically not discovering who Bones was into -- Jim was starting to narrow it down.
A very cute Academy fic that nevertheless deals with a bit of heavy shit for both Jim and Bones. Starts out with Jim bound and determined to befriend Bones by... discovering the perfect bar for them to hang out in. Has a lot of really great exploration of Bonesâs character, and heâs written in a really entertaining way.
Future Imperfect by Savoytruffle (50k words)
Authorâs Summary: Leonard wins the kid in a hand of poker. A hand of poker he plays in the dirty back room of a dive bar in East Bumfuck, Iowa, two weeks after his humiliating divorce is finalized, and on the sixth day of a bourbon-fueled bender thatâs somehow taken him from his high-rise loft in Atlanta to a fleabag motel in the middle of nowhere.
This fic is an Academy fic, but in a pretty dark universe. Maybe not Mirror Universe dark, but itâs one where slavery is practiced on Earth. Jim is, in this fic, Bonesâs slave. Not in a sexy way. Heâs part of an underclass of people who werenât designer babies. Bones goes to the Academy and tries to become a Starfleet officer, accompanied by Jim, his newly acquired slave. They grow closer as they deal with their pasts, and I guess I should stop there for fear of spoiling too much. This one talks a lot about childhood sexual abuse, so be warned. The story overall though has a hopeful ending.
Let Me Come Home by yawnralphio (7k words)
Authorâs Summary: Â âSomeone asked me what home was and all I could think of were the stars on the tip of your tongue, the flowers sprouting from your mouth, the roots entwined in the gaps between your fingers, the ocean echoing inside of your ribcage.â
For someone who theoretically dislikes modern day AUâs, there are actually a fair few that I really really love, and this is one. Jim and Bones run a travel blog together and journey around the US in a van. Itâs a really lovely mix of angst and romance.
The Switch series by Ceres_Libera (series is 269k words)
Authorâs Summary (of the first fic in the series):  The life and times of Leonard H. McCoy MD/PhD âŠÂ If Leonard McCoy's life could get any fucking weirder, it would be ⊠Jesus, he didn't even want to think what that could possibly mean, because it's already been too fucking weird to make any kind of rational sense. A Starfleet Academy story, set in the ST:XI universe.
I donât need any sass, people. I KNOW youâve all read Switch, and I know youâre all tired of seeing it on rec lists and I donât care. Itâs famous for a reason! Itâs not just long, itâs WONDERFUL. The big, epic Academy fic that kinda sets the Academy fic bar. Goes from Jim and Bones meeting all the way through the end of the 09 film. And thatâs just the main fic. I really love that both Jim and Bones are depicted as realistically flawed people, especially earlier on in their acquaintance. Neither of them are angst sponges, theyâre both just... kinda messed up dudes. But theyâre good people who learn to love each other. Also I guess itâs technically slow burn?
The Greater Good by emiliglia (29k words)
Authorâs Summary: Doctor Leonard McCoy thinks he's getting by, working as both a surgeon and a researcher at UCSF Medical Center. A chance encounter with Lieutenant Jim Kirk - who's changed since they first met five years before, and not for the better - forces Leonard to face reality about his own situation while trying to keep Jim from heading down the same path.
This is the only fic on here not on Ao3, as far as I can tell. Anyhow itâs modern day AU. Jim and Bones help themselves by helping each other and falling in looooove.
The aftershocks series by canistakahari (series is 30k words)
Authorâs Summary: Jim Kirk turns down Pikeâs challenge, and doesnât get on the Starfleet recruiting shuttle. But neither does Leonard McCoy, whoâs actually been in Iowa for six months already, doing fuck-all. Becoming drinking buddies seems like a natural progression.Sometimes the path to the stars is just a piece-of-shit dirt road. You know, the kind thatâs filled with potholes and surrounded by brambles and conveniently happens to be located in the bottom of a ravine. But every once in a while, when confronted with such a twisted mess of circumstance and cracked foundation, the universe still does its very best to fill in the holes.
I havenât read this in a long time, but I remember it being really good and kinda mindfucky. Not in a dark or stressful way, though. Jim and Bones donât join Starfleet at all. I feel I shouldnât say more because I donât want to spoil things, but the tags should give you more information if you want some.
i think iâll keep you (like a secret)Â by hoosierbitch (3k words)
Authorâs Summary: Bones came to Starfleet with a hell of a lot of baggage. Jim came empty handed.
Some good ole Jim angst. Prominently featuring: Tarsus things! Allergic-to-everything Jim! Jim allowing himself to be vulnerable around Bones! All that good stuff. I just love me some vulnerability.
How Whales (Sorta) Brought Jim and Bones Together by highschool-facelesshellion (4k words)
Authorâs Summary:Â For Leonard, first dates are flowers and small, homey restaurants where you talk quietly like you're sharing secrets with your potential girlfriend. They are not supposed to be at a table covered with aquarium maps and aquarium souvenirs. And they are certainly not supposed to be spent with a blond-haired, blue-eyed boy rambling about whales.(Or: Where Leonard is the only person that doesn't think Jim's too crazy for his whale obsession and Jim notices.)
Fairly goofy, slightly cracky remix of The Voyage Home (the one with the whales). Itâs just silly and charming and I donât know why I love the idea of Jim being a whale aficionado, but I really do.Â
Any Road Will Take You There by shoreleave (63k words)
Authorâs Summary: Slow-developing K/M, beginning right after the shuttle ride and showing what happens the first year at the Academy. Told from McCoy's POV.
This fic is verrrrry good. I know I have a lot of Academy fic on here, but please treat yourself and read this one. Shoreleave is really good at both plot and characterization. I really like this fic in part because it explores the root of Jimâs complete lack of trust in authority figures, while also showing just how dangerous that lack of trust can be for him.
Seeing Stars by lindmere (1k words)
Authorâs Summary: Inspired by Chris Pine's wig in Bottle Shock. Jim sneaks into Riverside for an old-fashioned Fourth of July.
A very sweet, sort of domestic established relationship fic.
His Eyes are Opened by tresa_cho (21k words)
Authorâs Summary: Lt Colonel Leonard McCoy thought his service days were over. After the Great War, he was ready to disappear into the sanctuary of anonymity, but the government had other plans. Strange men whisk him away from his comfortable existence to investigate an airship crash unlike anything the United States had ever seen before. The year is 1947. The location, Roswell, New Mexico.
Despite the summary saying âGreat Warâ, this fic is clearly post WWII, so I think that must be a typo. There is a dearth of McKirk fic set in the forties, and hot damn does this fic ever hit the spot if thatâs what youâre looking for. Usually fics that are set in modern times or earlier take out all the sci-fi elements of Star Trek, but not this one! Just a very well done fic with a unique premise.
Investigations by AceOfSpades (series is 93k words)
Authorâs Summary: The first thing Jim noticed about McCoy, and what started him on this whole messy path, was that McCoy was just a littleâŠoff.
GOD DAMN I love this fic. Itâs a Doom (2005) fusion, but you donât need to know anything about Doom to get this fic. It might even help to not know anything about Doom. God knows I donât and I adore this fic. Academy era, with Jim simultaneously befriending Bones and trying to solve the mystery of this weird Leonard McCoy guy. Theoretically weâre getting a sequel sometime, and it canât come soon enough in my opinion. Never fear, though, the fic is complete as-is and has lovely closure. Really really really recommended!
The Galactic Adventures of Major Zeph by winterover (14k words)
Authorâs Summary: Jim is a comic book nerd whoâs finally found his one true sidekick. Leonard is a convention virgin who really needs a drink. There is only one bed left in San Diego.
Academy fic! For some reason I always love fics where Jim is into some kind of craft or art, or is just generally a nerd about something. This fic provides that twice: Jim is a comic book nerd as the summary says, but also really into cosplay. And Bones just happens to look like the sidekick of Jimâs favorite comic book character. Romantic hijinks ensue.
The Man Who Held Up Atlas by thalialunacy (7k words)
Authorâs Summary: Five times Leonard McCoy fixed Jim Kirkâs back, and the one time he didnât have to.
Really really lovely 5 plus 1 fic with reverse chronology. Starts with Jim and Bones as old old men and moves back in time from there, showing little snapshots of their relationship.
and i can lend you broken parts that might fit (like this)Â by jeyhawk (17k words)
Authorâs Summary: Academy Era. First they fall into bed. Then they fall in love.
Funny and sweet. Nothing too heavy, just loads of Jim and Bones being wildly in love with each other. And sexytimes.

A/N: ugh i love aos SO MUCH and iâd incorporate them more if the story allowed for it but i gotta pick my battles so to speak
ââââââââââââââââââââââââââ
I woke up in another laboratory, machines beeping around me, and several needles stuck in my arm. I wanted them out, but when I tried to move, I realized I was strapped to this hospital bed as well. Again.
Donât talk to these people. Donât listen to what they say. This could still be enemy territory. As my eyes adjusted, I saw a few figures beyond the area I was being held in, discussing something at a lab bench. Both had accents and they bantered back and forth in short jabs. Just to test, I flexed my palms as much as I could, and at least try to summon a breeze. The papers on the nearby table fluttered, and it caught the attention of the people at the bench.
âWoah, hey, donât do that,â said the man, holding up his hands. âJemma, sheâs awake.â
The other woman hurried over and checked one of the machines before reading notes off a tablet. âHi,â she said, and even though it sounded friendly, her wide eyes indicated a measured caution. âYouâre safe. Youâre at a SHIELD base.â She pointed at herself. âAgent Simmons. And thatâs Agent Fitz.â He gave a small wave. âHow are you feeling?â
When I didnât respond, she looked at Agent Fitz for help, but he looked equally uncomfortable. âIâll let Coulson know,â Agent Simmons murmured. She typed out a message on the tablet and then put it down on a table. âMine if IâŠ?â she pointed to the IV line and I pulled my arm away as far as the straps would let me. Donât touch me.
âIâm going to take it out,â Agent Simmons explained. I watched as she unstuck the tape and slide the needle out. âSee? That wasnât bad, was it?â
She hummed as she checked the other machines, occasionally shooting a look at the man. âYou heal fast,â she commented. âBut itâs lucky Coulson found you when he did.â Agent Simmons wrote a few more things down. âNever treated someone with wings before,â she said, almost to herself, and Agent Fitz cleared his throat, cutting her off.
âIâm going to undo these now,â Jemma said softly, gesturing to the restraints. âCan I trust you not to do anything?â
I looked around the lab, listened to the conversations in the hallway beyond. My ribs hurt when I breathed, and I had never felt so weak in my life. I couldnât even if I wanted to.
âJust... promise me you wonât pull out the needle in your other arm,â she said. âPlease?â
I nodded once.
Someone knocked on the door frame of the lab and it was the same man who had come to Martyâs apartment, a time that felt like years ago now. Remember when that was my biggest worry?
âMiss Wren, itâs good to see you with us again. How are you? Phil Coulson, weâve met before.â He pulled up a chair and sat down next to the bed. âAgent Simmons said all your tests checked out. Youâre going to recover just fine. Iâm so sorry for what you went through there.â
So, what happens to me now? Where do I go from here? This is exactly what Jessica warned you about so long ago. Iâm never getting out of here. I went from HYDRA to SHIELD. Whatâs the difference? Iâm still trapped.
âWhen youâre ready, weâd like to assess you for the Index,â Coulson continued. I began to shake my head slowly. âLook,â he said. âWe know. But this is the protocol. Itâs for everyoneâs safety.â There was so much he wasnât sayingâsurely, he must have known about all those HYDRA agents and about Marty and who I was and what I had been doing. There was no way he didnât know. The fact that it hadnât been mentioned yet made me nervous. He offered a smile and then got up and walked over to where Agent Fitz and Agent Simmons were working, back at the lab bench.
âHas she spoken to you yet?â
âNot a word,â Agent Simmons replied. âShe seems petrified.â
âWell, that can be expected.â He looked back over at me. âStay with her. Iâve made some calls.â
âWe should give her something to eat,â Agent Fitz offered. âSheâs probably starving.â
Shortly after the conversation, I dozed off, and when I woke up, there was another familiar face in the doorway of the medical area, holding a tray and several wrapped items under her arm. Agent Johnson? Is that who it was?
âHi,â she said. âMind if I sit here?â She pointed to the space at the end of the bed. I shifted my legs and finally sat up, using the pillow as support. âFitzsimmons thought it would be good for you to eat something. So, they recommended this from the canteen,â she said, holding out the tray, and I saw a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, a bag of crackers, and a bowl of cut fruit. âBut I got you some better things as well.â She produced a package of pop-tarts and two Rice Crispy Treats. âDonât tell Jemma.â
I almost smiled, and she then placed a glass down on the table next to me. âAnd hereâs a glass of whatever. She said itâs some sort of electrolyte thing. I donât know. But itâs grape flavored.â I picked at the sandwich and pulled a small chunk out from the middle on one half, touching it to my lips and finally eating it. Somehow, it was the most delicious peanut butter and jelly I had ever tasted.
âYou can call me Daisy, by the way. And youâre Willow, right? I remember meeting you.â She sighed. âLook, take it from me, these are genuinely good people. You can trust them. All right? I know you hardly know me, but Iâll promise you that if it makes you feel better.â
I looked up and made eye contact, but I didnât say anything.
âCoulson says you have abilities, right?â She smiled. âI do, too. I know how weird this all seems, the Index, trying to control them, feeling like you have to hide. You donât have to do that here, okay? Weâve all seen some pretty weird shit.â
I heard footsteps in the hallway beyond the lab and turned and watched the door, where about five seconds later, Agent Simmons entered again. âWhat are you doing bothering her?â she exclaimed to Daisy. âShe needs her rest!â
âNah, weâre friends already,â Daisy said. âRight?â
By now, neither of them seemed to expect a response. âI have to take one more blood sample,â said Agent Simmons. âIs that all right?â
I held out my arm and looked away as she poked it with the needle, which Daisy watched the scientist. âJeez, sheâs not going to have any left at this rate,â she joked.
âCoulson asked me to be thorough,â Agent Simmons huffed. âIâm sorry to keep sticking you like this,â she said to me. âWe just wanted to make sure we donât miss anything.â
They hung out longer, the two of them chatting back and forth as Agent Simmons ran the samples. Eventually, Agent Fitz returned to the lab as well and when I fell asleep again, the three of them were joking around about something one of their friends had done. I found myself wondering if Peter had gotten my message by now, if Ned knew what happened, or Jessica. What happens now?
Agent Johnson must have noticed me watching them, because she waved a hand, motioning me over. âYou can sit over here if youâd like.â Agent Simmons shot her a look and Agent Johnson scoffed at her. âItâs just across the room.â
âCoulson saidâŠâ
âHer⊠uh⊠powersâŠâ Agent Fitz interrupted.
âYouâre not going to do your airbending or whatever, are you?â Agent Johnson asked me. âSee? Sheâs fine. Come on.â
I slowly climbed out of the hospital bed and walked over to the lab bench they were sitting at, putting up a stool. I picked at a loose thread on the hospital gown while the others let me into the circle. They continued to talk about random things, missions, or whatever, pretending like I was a normal part of the conversation even though I still hadnât said a word. The three of them stayed late until Agent Johnson got called away and Agent Simmons sent me back to bed, mock-horrified when she saw how late it had gotten.
âShame theyâre picking her up tomorrow,â I overheard Agent Fitz say as I lay my head down on the crinkly pillow. âThink Daisy likes having another powered person around. Even if she doesnât say much.â
âHasnât said anything,â Agent Simmons murmured. âDonât know how they plan to interview her tomorrow.â
Whoâs coming tomorrow? And why? Where am I going now?
âYou know, Romanoff used to be a SHIELD agent,â said Agent Fitz.
âEverybody knows that.â
âI didnât in the beginning.â
âThatâs because youâre clueless about those things.â
âAm not!â
I shut my eyes and tried to block out the rest of the lab and get some sleep. One hour at a time, even if I couldnât imagine living the way I was anymore. One hour at a time. I didnât care enough to escape, and I didnât have anywhere to escape to. I was stuck with whatever this was, whoever was coming, even if I didnât see the point in any of it. Iâm not worth all this. I did what I set out to do. What happens next, I donât care. If I had died at that base, that would have been okay, too. Maybe it would have been for the better.
