Lieber thoughts/ Headcanons

Age: 28+

Grew up in the Mythsong valley. Parents worshiped Haeos and Khazri as gods of music. Started questioning his faith during the Mythsong saga and renounced it when Alteon fell.

Started worshiping the hero in earnest after Drakath was defeated. Founded his first cult with survivors of the Infernal invasion. It was a small cult that largely went unnoticed outside of being trivia to rib Shin with.

Lieber and the cult were recruited into the Jus Divinum around the time Malgor took over as the big bad. The cult's disappearance went largely unnoticed, and was assumed destroyed during the Mana Core Crisis.

The Mouthpiece is a Speaker, and revealed the truth of the EDoT to Lieber when he was recruited.

After the Mana Core Crisis, the survivors of Malgor's army were recruited into the cult. Their survival of the affliction sent to punish Malgor's followers, was taken as a sign of divine favour.

Until Abel's arrival, Lieber was the youngest of the Jus Divinum's current leadership.

this semester i'm taking a class on the politics of museums and how they fit into shifting political landscapes as they appear around the time of the enlightenment. it's a great class and i'm learning a lot but i also entertain myself with relating the current classes i'm taking to my latest interest, which as of now is TDC

so i started thinking about the ways in which various forms of authoritarianism are represented by the various skeksis (imperial power = emperor, propaganda = chamberlain, military oppression = general, religious oppression = ritual master, etc etc etc) and how, if the skeksis are controlling all historical, cultural, and even aesthetic (in the case of skekekt) narratives of the skeksis empire, a museum curator skeksis would fit incredibly well into the setting

this skeksis' role in the empire machine would be sort of a combination of chamberlain's, collector's, treasurer's, scroll-keeper's and ornamentalist's roles, in how a museum is the setting in which histories are established and taste is made (with a particular emphasis on "secularism" and "fact" being made both indisputable and something worthy of admiration, even a form of worship) but taking a very public role in communicating the empire's rewritten history and the latest advents in what is tasteful vs tasteless, powerful vs weak, worthy vs unworthy of consideration to the gelfling of skarith, and by communicating these ideas, brings the gelfling who visit their museum to become "good citizens" of the skeksis empire, who are educated in notions of fact and desire to elevate their status and their minds by undergoing the worship-like ritual of touring the museum.

(worth noting that all the things i'm saying about "notions of fact" and "tasteful," "powerful," and "worthy" are not how i actually view the skeksis empire lol. i might like the crazy shit they have going on but i understand that they are the bad guys and the above analysis is based on their own opinions about the world in which they operate)

so with all those thesis statements out of the way here are some of the ideas i had for "the curator" as a character and the imperial museum, this is long so it's going under the cut

since the castle of the crystal (to my understanding) is more a government office than a public establishment where people come and go as they please, the imperial museum is probably not at or near the castle, since the castle's imposing figure kind of necessitates that it be a lone structure on the plain. therefore i imagine the imperial museum (and where the curator lives for the majority of the year (trine, whatever)) to be closer to ha'rar, maybe further down the mountains in an isolated but equally idyllic location, since ha'rar is a metropolitan center and therefore a suitably "cultured" location for a museum.

the imperial museum is styled in what i would call a "minimalist garthic" architectural style, resembling the crystal castle but not as ostentatious and evoking a more sober, secular atmosphere. it has crescent-like central spires similar to the crystal castle's, but smaller and arranged in a circle around an oblong dome kind of similar to the all-maudra's palace in ha'rar. the museum itself has three wings and three stories (shouts out the TDC triad) all dedicated to various storylines regarding thra's biographic, aesthetic and cultural histories as defined and regularly rewritten by the skeksis.

the curator (currently i'm working with the name "skekoul" but this is subject to change) works closely with skekok, skeksil, skeklach and skekshod, and skekekt on the contents and organization of the museum. skekok is the go-to source on skeksis history (and pre-skeksis history, but this is not information the curator displays). skeksil largely consults with the curator on the rotation of displays wrt current events and changes in written history as ordained by the lords of the crystal. skeklach and skekshod are usually the ones providing objects to display depending on the curator's latest exhibitions, like sculptures, relics, tapestries, paintings, and so-on, although they'll only offer particularly valuable objects to the museum so long as there's something similar in the castle treasury. skekekt consults with the curator on the aesthetic wing of the museum, essentially defining what constitutes "fine art" or what is deserving (or undeserving) of a spotlight depending on the latest vogue. skektek often wheedles the curator about a scientific wing for the museum, which the curator thinks would damage the delicate balance of secular and sacred nuance their lovely museum has established.

the curator travels semi-regularly between the castle and the museum, making trips out to the castle at least once a month (unum, whatever) to remain up-to-date on the latest goings on, shifts in hierarchy, who-is-concerned-with-what drama that is churning regularly within castle walls. they're pretty good at "the castle game," aka occupying a suitably high status among their kind without going overboard in their exertions of superiority over others, but generally the other skeksis regard the curator as hoity-toity, snobbish, obsessive, a dork and rather a bitch.

most of the above is true. the curator thinks of themself as the preeminent mind on what is right, what is relevant, and what is tasteful, and when they deem another skeksis to be "out of touch" in some way (most often this sentiment is directed at skekzok, whose "excessive" spirituality is in direct contrast to the secularity of their museum, which is actually not very secular at all in the atmosphere it evokes and reverent behavior it encourages) they often go about "educating" that skeksis or inviting them to educate themself at the imperial museum. this avowed superiority belies an obsession with fact, fiction, and the extent to which their museum is a tool of the state before it is a hallowed house of all that makes thra beautiful. for the most part the curator has made peace with how their museum serves the empire but if they were to have a redemption arc this obsession would be the entry point in doing so.

i think the curator would have a bit of a fixation on the skeksis of the distant past (another entry point to a redemption arc, though a less likely one), as they were not long after the sundering (much to the consternation of the other skeksis) because of their avowed vigor and beauty before the effects of time and the crystal set in, and would often wear "classical" garments where appropriate, such as banquets or social calls with other skeksis, as opposed to events where many gelfling would be present and watching. i think classical skeksis garments would vary on modesty and shape depending on the particular era of fashion the curator is interested in at the time, but the particular outfit i'm imagining covers roughly as much skin as the garthic fashion of the present covers, but suggests quite a bit more wrt the shape of the body (sort of indecent based on how it implies nakedness rather than showing it outright), and based on the froud concept art of young skeksis i think they would often carry pretty silk fans in their hind-claws, implying wings. they would probably adopt the garthic fashion of the kind of crest-like back ornament (which to my knowledge has no name, which compels me to make one up but i have yet to do so) but institute it in a more "refined" way, almost matching the architecture of the museum in how it makes minimalist the garthic style.

generally the curator likes to present themself in a state of intelligent repose, looking like they're always thinking about something or another likely too sophisticated for another skeksis to understand, but in truth they are very easy to distract and just as easy to nettle. to suggest to the curator that they're incorrect, a liar, or even just stupid in some way will have them absolutely frothing with anger for the rest of the day. they also have a bad habit of fixating on "errors" or problems in their own work, and when they uncover some mistake in the presented information on an exhibit they often won't sleep until the mistake is corrected. "errors" tend to vary between things that are actually untrue or things that are a little too true, ie things that paint the empire in a more honest but less desirable light, and the curator is, like all skeksis, afraid of being punished for such errors.

related to the prior point, if, say, some troublesome and heroic gelfling took upon themselves to thwart the curator in some way, screwing with their exhibitions will drive them absolutely bonkers.

on this topic: the curator didn't sleep for weeks after skekgra's exile. aside from all the skeksis execrations of the conqueror the curator still hasn't forgiven skekgra for fucking up their historical exhibits.

the exhibitions at the museum are pretty hectic events, often drawing in all the maudren and various other aristocratic gelfling as well as common-folk to their opening ceremonies. the exhibitions themselves, depending on what new collections are being unveiled, tend to resemble salon hangs both in the sheer volume of presented objects and the social environment they promote. gelfling mingle, news and gossip are exchanged, and all present educate themselves on what the latest subject of significance is. generally the curator promotes a certain opulence at these events, to make the attendees feel like citizens of high society and to make the museum an axis of illustrious and important culture among gelfling, but usually after the opening of the exhibition the curator will tone down the atmosphere of the display as to promote the reverence of the objects necessitated by the museum environment. when there isn't an opening event going on the museum is very quiet.

it's important not only to the curator but to the emperor (whose opinions and desires are usually made to reflect that of all skeksis, so as to promote their status as a monolithic organization spearheaded by the emperor) that the museum is a public space where status does not factor into entry. firstly, the skeksis have already shaped the status of gelfling to their liking, and the gelfling have internalized it, so there's (probably) no need to further reinforce that idea with the organization of the museum. secondly, if working gelfling aren't permitted to educate themselves on the empire with the narrative the empire has specifically designated as the truth and enshrined in the museum, the likelier that Actually True things about the empire are disseminated to the working gelfling, and therefore the likelier that the huge number of poorer gelfling organize and rebel against the establishment of both the museum and the empire. therefore the museum is open to everyone, from the highest vapra to the lowest grottan.

and last but not least: the mystic counterpart of skekOul the Curator is urLu the Keeper (after the antiquated term for "curator" coined sometime in the late 1800s-early 1900s). their urskek name and role was OulLu the Antiquarian. currently i do not have insights into these characters' functions or qualities but who knows what the future holds ;]

from what you said on one of your recent fics, i’m just curious about your theories and/or headcanons for Jen and Kira’s parents? not trying to start any arguments or anything, i just love hearing people’s different takes! i’m not sure which ones i agree with yet.

Yeah! :) I've thought about this so much. This might be kinda long since I have quite a bit to say about it. (Some of it might not make sense, please ignore me on those parts haha!)

I'll start with Jen, since I'm pretty solid on my theory for his parents. I really do believe that Jen is the son of Rian and Deet. I'm not sure exactly what will happen with Deet and the darkening, but I choose to believe that they find a way to help her and that her and Rian can be happy, at least as long as they can before we know what sadly happens... Anyways, Jen reminds me so much of Rian, and now it's confirmed via Dark Crystal's website that Jen is a Stonewood. (I know Kylan is half Stonewood, but they still call him a Spriton generally, so it doesn't make sense to me that they would call Jen a Stonewood instead of a Spriton if Kylan really is his dad.) Also the bits of white in Jen's hair reminds me of Deet's hair. Besides his looks, I have thought a lot about Deet too. I think something unique may be going on with her given the way she can talk with the great trees and how she was trusted with the Sanctuary Tree's power. Her name is literally Deethra too, with Thra in it. (That might not even mean anything but like... it's been heavy on my mind haha). If she has some kind of special significance to Thra, I think that would be fitting that her son is "the chosen one". In the case of Rian being Jen's dad, that makes Ordon Jen's grandfather. Ordon is the one who found the dual glaive during the Arathim Wars (with Fara's help) which we know had the crystal shard that Jen used in the movie. I think that would be a cool connection. :)

For Kira's parents, I still don't have a completely 100% solid theory. My initial thought was that her parents are Brea and Kylan. I know those two aren't even officially together but I felt like some kind of chemistry was happening between them and it might be leading to a relationship. We know for sure that Kira is a Vapra (again, via the Dark Crystal website), so I'm definitely thinking Brea or Seladon is her mom. There are a few things I noticed about Kira. First things first, she has a bit of green in her hair. This part is what has me stumped a little bit. We know Gurjin has green in his hair, but if you look close enough it looks like Kylan has a bit of green it his as well? I saw a post about that with pictures. Comment or message me and I'll try to find it and link it. Okay, besides that... Kira's wings. They don't exactly look like any of the wings we see in AoR (that I remember) but the two times we do see them, she is using them more to glide than to fly. Maybe it could be something like no one taught her how to use them (she was literally raised by podlings, how would they teach her?) But honestly, it made me immediately think that she descends from a Drenchen (Gurjin). Not to mention she lived in a swampy like area. I don't know if that would have anything to do with it though, just a little thought. We do see in Deet's vision, Brea running through the woods with I'm guessing Kira, with how similar it looks to Kira's memory of her "mother". And Kira literally calls her "mother". There's still the chance though that Seladon is her mom and that Kira went into Brea's care after her death or something, and Kira having been so little only remembers Brea and just assumes that she's her mom. Last thing is I'm automatically assuming Seladon will be the last All-Maudra. That could give some significance to Kira, the other gelfling in the prophecy, being her daughter maybe? Perhaps I'm just overthinking all of this haha.

So, all that said... long story short, I think Rian and Deet are Jen's parents. I'm not 100% solid on a theory for Kira's parents though. I really really want it to be Brea and Kylan, but I'm thinking it might actually be Gurjin and Seladon somehow.

I also love hearing people's theories and talking about my own, whether it's about Jen and Kira's parents or anything else. So share yours with me or ask me for more theories! :)

Gurjin would be the biggest softie when it comes to his SO. I imagine he’d be incredibly caring, very protective and always looking out for his SO at all times. 

You think he likes giving hugs to his friends? Wait until you see him with his SO. Hugs galore! Hugs for dayyyysss. Just non-stop hugging. 

He’s a giant teddy bear! Loves cuddling with his SO in private, preferring to lie in their lap or be held in their arms.  

I see him as wanting a whole brood of kids, like 4 of them. Enough to have his own army. (Dear god could you IMAGINE-)

Loves to dance and sing with his SO. Like, always singing so cheesily to his SO and twirling them around. 

Likes to have his SO play with his locs and decorate them with beads and feathers. It’s kinda intimate for him, and it’s how he likes to wind down sometimes with his SO. 

Probably a massive flirt when he’s trying to win over his SO, constantly handing out compliments and making flirtatious remarks whenever he gets the chance. 

This is followed by a strange kind of nervousness once he’s won his SO over; he gets kinda bashful at the returned gestures and it’s the most adorable thing. 

Is super protective and loyal! Loyal to his friends and his SO, Gurjin would go to any lengths to protect the ones he loves. 

Will give his SO piggyback rides if they got tired of walking or just for fun!

And skekGra was the one that usually paid attention to it but urGoh had a soft spot for it... especially when skekGra had to leave for a caravan pickup. I think the awlis reminded him of someone ❤️

There is no place for modesty with the Emperor, and a humble lover will be encouraged to lean into their pride through constant encouragement in the form of eloquent compliments. After all, the Emperor will not be seen with someone who does not equal his level.

You will be adorned with the most luxurious clothing, the best that Ekt can make from the finest materials, the rarest jewels and metals, from the deepest and most dangerous mines in Thra.

Making a face reference sheet for a bunch of characters is a great way to kill time on an airplane. I had a lot of fun with it though! It's a great exercise in curing same-face syndrome, which I suffer from when drawing humans/humanoids. These are just the face sketches for now. Hair, lines, and colors will come later. i imagine she inherited the maudra title young following her mother's death (she looks so young compared to the other maudras!) and, being a young gelfling surrounded by matriarchs, maybe struggled to integrate and get along with the other maudras for a while. she understood gelfling law in theory but in practice it doesn't come naturally to her, and the maudras being a sort of old ladies club didn't offer a lot of help at first.

probably she resolved this by withdrawing her personal feelings and emotions from her maudra "persona," she tries to be completely objective, plays by all the rules and waits for others to express their stances on a given matter before offering her own input. the other maudras opinions on this behavior range from annoyed to indulgent, most of them were there while she was struggling and they understand the need to separate their personal lives from the lives they lead as maudras.

gelfling autism

the shape of the dousan headdress is determined by how much hair it needs to hold--seethi has lots and lots and lots of hair, but she almost always wears it tied up or braided back to keep it off her neck in the desert heat.

the loss of her mother, which i imagine was unexpected and came at an already-fraught time in inter-clan relations/shifting skeksis policy/some other drama, had a profound effect on seethi that gelfling close to her recognized--the dousan perspective on death helped her rationalize and accept her mother's death, but she's never quite been able to move on.

the little hair charm at the end of her necklace is a lock of her mother's hair

whether in maudra-mode or not, seethi comes across like she's sort of floating through life, a bit detached from everything but still held down to thra by virtue of existing on it. she becomes more grounded in reality when a present situation or task demands her whole attention

related to above, she realizes she actually quite enjoys fighting during the outset of the garthim war, because unlike maudra work it's fast-paced, physical and decisive, and she doesn't have to worry about doing it "right" so much as just surviving to fight another way.

seethi lost a lot of her friends when she became maudra, unable to maintain relationships as the role demanded more and more of her time. :C

despite the kind of unwieldy shape seethi actually likes to wear the headdress because she thinks her ears are too big. when she wears it she has to trade big ears for a fivehead, but a big forehead is a feature of beauty among dousan (but not among stonewood, thats why they all have bangs)

since dousan aren't a part of the alliance of the crystal, seethi has only met the skeksis incidentally when some event necessitated both she and a skeksis ambassador attend. after maybe the third or fourth time this happens she decides to take a leaf out of maudra argots book and just sends a messenger with a no-show letter.

during aor seethi is the second oldest maudra, a little younger than mera (spriton maudra) and youngest of all being ethri (sifan maudra). mera became maudra not long after seethi, although at an older age, and adjusted pretty well to the position, so she and seethi get along well being closer in age than the other maudras. ethri became maudra under similar circumstances to seethi (sudden loss of a mother) so seethi and mera advise her where they can and do their best to make themselves welcoming presences for her. mera is better at this than seethi lol

I think one of the only reasons (other than cardan not liking the idea he was tricked (by Taryn)) cardan didn't just let madoc just take the crown, was "my wife thought it was a bad idea"

One day, Gurjin sees Rian leave his post, and, since he's still bitter about Rian whooping his ass, he snitches to Ordon
