silly little Malevolent theory

(just fyi I'm only up to part 33 so no spoilers beyond that thnx)

I was just thinking about the question of whether or not it's cheesy for a character in a piece of media to say the title of that piece of media (hypothetical example: Steve Harrington saying "come on guys, we've been through stranger things"). I'm hyperfixating on Malevolent atm so naturally that's where my brain went, and while it's innocuous enough of a title and the characters saying it would make perfect sense, I realised that only two characters (thus far) have actually said the word "malevolent".

One of them was Frank (or at least a voice claiming to be Frank, more on that in a minute) in Part 18.

He showed up in Arthur's right ear and started contradicting everything John said, yet was never wrong, as John was evidently still struggling with being truthful after spending so long as the eldritch embodiment of lying. But we never really had confirmation that that voice was or was not Frank. Who was the only other character to use the word "malevolent"?

Kayne. In Coda.

Kayne whose voice is closer to Harlan's natural voice than any other character. Kayne who doesn't believe in a fourth wall. Kayne who's clearly supposed to represent the fans. Kayne who literally sat on the sidelines loudly chewing popcorn while John sobbed and tried to save Arthur's life.

So all that to say...what if the voice in Part 18 wasn't Frank at all, but Kayne trying to drive even more of a wedge between John and Arthur because he thought it would be funny? Bearing in mind that Arthur and John don't meet Kayne until Part 20, meaning they'd have no reason to suspect him here.

Taveeta Szymanowicz as Theresa Baptiste in Teen Wolf, Season 1

Theresa is not superstitious. It's easy not to be, in a small boring town like hers, until it isn't anymore. Scott McCall makes first line, Allison Argent blows into town, and suddenly everything is topsy turvy.

There is, first of all, the devastation of watching her crush get a girlfriend. She knows she doesn't have a claim on Scott, obviously, but that's kind of the worst part; even if she'd made a move, it wouldn't have mattered. When she got hit with a lacrosse ball last year during their shared practice, he'd run to help her, and a year later, she still couldn't stop thinking about it; Scott, on the other hand, was always helping someone do something, and probably hadn't thought about it since. She wasn't rooting for the guy to be unhappy, obviously, but pining had been a lot easier when no one else noticed him.

There is also the unfortunate fact that Theresa, generally, seems to be noticing a lot more these days. It's hard to accept that the rash of attacks in her town are really animals when she keeps seeing flashes of men with teeth. It's hard to focus when her thigh itches even though there's no scab there. It's hard to enjoy school dances when she has the deep, deep feeling that something is wrong. It's hard to talk to her friends when none of them are seeing what she's seeing and it's hard to figure out what she knows about what's going on when she has gaps in her memory. She'd read once that brains will sometimes do that to protect you, but she doesn't feel safer.

But it doesn't matter. Men don't have sharp teeth and she doesn't have any marks on her body and superstitions don't mean anything. This will pass, as it always does, and Beacon Hills will be boring again.

If Lydia Martin hadn't almost bled out on the lacrosse field the night of the formal, she might've been able to believe that.

I miss when shows had stupid goofy shit in them that you were supposed to take seriously. I miss robins "holy ____ on a ____, batman!" I miss spiderman crawling around like an insectoid, I miss weird shit that doesn't make sense like "a meteor crashed down on Earth and awoke mummified lion people that lived in caves for thousands of years", I miss when in scooby doo they'd eat fog or dracula hosted races every year, i miss "Columbo has a skateboarding descendant Boronco" or "Napoleon's descendant runs a terrorist organization that wants to take over the world bc its noisy and he wants to sleep". I love batshit plots with weird circumstances that make no sense but they're fun and entertaining-- give me shit that comes out of nowhere and baffles me but is still fun. I was wondering why there was an uptick of trans!Cross art, not that I was bothered by that but I heard there was a recent situation related to it and had no idea what people were referring to.

Then I found the posts in question.

A summary of what basically happened: Jakei commented on the transcoded parallel of the Cross and Papyrus scene with the line “You are valid 🏳️‍⚧️💜”, in a post with fun facts about Underverse 0.8 Pt.1. People got excited the creator acknowledged the parallel, some people probably got confused and thought Jakei confirmed he was actually transgender, other people got confused why there was a connection at all. One post in particular came under Jakei’s radar that she felt the need to call the person out for their bad takes and clarify she only made Cross transcoded. Fans reacted with their own reactions. Any attempt to defend and explain the transcoded narrative does not get through to OP who remains confused and mad.

Whether Cross is a well-written trans-coded character wasn’t really what was being argued about, but the fact a connection to transgender experience was being made at all and that was enough to spark the current trend and hype going around for trans!Cross.

As I understood it, the context people are drawing from was subtext apparently put there intentionally by the creator. An allegory about changing and accepting new identity that’s maybe not unique to only trans people but one Jakei tried to tell. Also note that Jakei only said Cross is trans-coded, but doesn’t care if people see him as outright trans, and most people do understand headcanon and coding doesn’t equal canon lore.

I also love the character but don’t connect to or interpret him in that way, but to get so angry over other’s different interpretations and throw around colorful wording like “strange/ cringe/ harmful/ stupid/ disgusting/ idiots/ bitch” in response to people’s different opinions… of a fictional character… how do people have the energy for that? Is it a parasocial thing?

People don’t have to like or agree with everything an author or other fans create, but if the only harm being done is cringe headcanons and cringe fanon overshadowing the correct canon interpretation (welcome to tumblr btw), then…

Anyways congrats to everyone for making the oreo an unofficial trans-coded icon.
