IT'S BEEN MANY YEARS SINCE SHE LAST SAW A REAL WINTER, THE LANDS CLAD IN WHITE SNOWY DUNES AND A COLD SO BONE-BITING ONE WONDERED IF THEY'D EVER FEEL WARMTH AGAIN.
his quiet since returning to winterfell hadn't helped either â and she had found herself feeling more alone than ever. but she couldn't blame him. ... with everything that'd happened, he needed time, even if they didn't have any. for a long time she had been at his side, acted as his shadow both in combat and, much to his advisors dismay, in his council. THE WOMAN WASN'T TO BE TRUSTED, THE KING WAS FOOLISH TO THINK SO, she'd heard it time and again. but since the twins, a distance had befallen them. one neither had dared to impose on until now.
( RE. ) @ofgreay said: did you mean it?
bianca lingers under the fan of the weirwood tree, but she's come to a loss, OLD GODS HAVING LONG SINCE FORSAKEN HER. did you mean it? robb's words ring in her ears, the first she's heard all day; and the first words he's spoken to her since their return. đłđžđ˝'đ đťđ´đ°đ
đ´ đźđ´. even now she could still feel the stickiness of his blood trickling from wounds where arrows had pierced through flesh. NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES YOU WASH YOUR HANDS, YOU CAN'T GET IT OFF. not even the six frey-men that had attempted to hold her back, to ward her off, had been able to prevent her from running to the DYING WOLF, bleeding out on their floor. THEY SAY HE CANNOT DIE.
â đ¸ đťđžđ
đ´ đđžđ. â TEARS HAD MIXED WITH BLOOD ON HER CHEEKS, AND FOREHEAD PRESSED TO HIS.
perhaps she'd always known but simply been too gullible to see what had been right in front of her the whole time. all bianca knew was that it were the only words that made sense at the time. WHEN YOU THOUGHT YOU'D LOST HIM FOREVER. â of course i did. i still do. â words feel serrated leaving her throat, and though she's not yet turned to him â it was no mere confession. IT HAD BEEN MADE BEFORE THE GODS. â ... I LOVE YOU. I THINK I ALWAYS HAVE. â

| luke castellan x fem! daughter of poseidon! reader
๨ৠwarnings ๨ŕ§: none i think
๨ৠsummary ๨ŕ§: luke and [reader] go on a secret date, only to be caught by annabeth, percy, and grover
๨ৠPART 2 OUT NOW ๨ŕ§
âI thought this place was secret..â
âwhereâre you going anyways at 10:00 am on a random tuesday??â
percy asked, giving a very confused look, mostly because, youâre never up at 10:00 am or ever putting this much effort into making sure your shirt looks good enough.
âpercy, iâm not going anywhere. i just decided to.. put a little more effort in today i guess.â
you said with glowing cheeks, thinking of luke. percy doesnât seem to convinced and was about to say something else, but you quickly beat him to it, to avoid other integrations.
âare you sure my shirt looks good?â âshould i opt for the baggier jeans or keep these flared ones on?â
â Ë・ âŕ¨âĄŕ§â Ë・â Ë・ âŕ¨âĄŕ§â Ë・ ââ Ë・ âŕ¨âĄŕ§â Ë・ â Ë・ âŕ¨âĄŕ§â Ë・ â
it was a sunny day for camp half blood. perfect for a picnic or maybe even a secret date..
as you exited your cabin, ready to spend some much needed time with your favorite boy ever, you were stopped by annabeth. donât get me wrong, you love annabeth. but right now, you wanted some alone time with luke.
âhey y/n! i wanted to ask if you could help me work on some new sparring skills? i was going to ask luke but i canât seem to find him anywhere.â annabeth asked with a hopeful look in her eyes.
you hesitated in saying it, but you couldnât ever turn down helping someone. âsure annie. why notâ you said with a bit of a forced smile.
as she showed you the moves sheâs been working on, you correct her on her form and where she would be exposed to the enemy. this goes on for about 20 minutes until grover walks by and starts talking to annabeth about something.
you use this opportunity to quietly slip away to finally see luke. all you wanted to do was kiss him and hug him and do everything affectionate with him because you felt like you havenât seen him in forever (you havenât seen him for like a day).
as you brush through the sharp pine needles and itchy bushes, you finally catch a glimpse of the boy you fell in love with when you were 14.
you see him laying down on a blanket, with his elbows propping him up. you sneak up behind him and put your hands over his eyes.
âguess who!â you say lightly laughing as he guesses stupid answers like âChironâ or âPercyâ.
as you remove your hands from his eyes he gets up and immediately kiss you all over your cheeks, nose, forehead, and finally your lips.
âhey, iâve missed you so much.â luke says with love laced in his eyes.
ânot as much as iâve missed you.â âi have to tell you all about the morning iâve had just to get here!â you exclaimed with a smile as you both sit down, hand in hand.
â Ë・ âŕ¨âĄŕ§â Ë・ â â Ë・ âŕ¨âĄŕ§â Ë・ â â Ë・ âŕ¨âĄŕ§â Ë・ â â Ë・ âŕ¨âĄŕ§â
some time has passed. about an hour or so. your head is on lukeâs shoulder as heâs telling you all about how his week has been and how much heâs missed you (even though you two saw each other literally the day before).
in the middle of talking, you decided to just kiss him because well, you love him and this is one of the only times you got to spend time with him alone. as youâre both ahem.. making out, you hear footsteps, but you donât think much of it.
until you hear a percy yelling âWHY ARE YOU MAKING OUT WITH MY HALF-SISTER?!?!!â as grover catches up with percy, panting. and annabeth removes her hat, âpercy! you ruined our cover you seaweed brain.â
âwell sorry that iâm freaked out that luke is making out with my sister!! weâre lucky we didnât get here later..â
as both you and luke just sit there dumbfounded, you finally decide to speak up. âok why are you all here??â percy replies back very sassily âoh missy thatâs the least of your problems.â
you roll your eyes as one of the more mature ones respond (annabeth) âwell after grover finished talking to me, i saw that you werenât with me anymore and also judging how luke wasnât where he usually is either, i got a little fishy. so i grabbed percy and grover and went off.â
percy is just glaring at luke. like staring daggers into him. luke is just sheepishly smiling as he lays his head on your shoulder kissing it. as you both hear percy lecturing you on how itâs not ok to sneak around and such, annabeth and grover just sit there laughing as you and luke just keep playfully rolling your eyes and being dramatic with your responses like âoh iâm so sorry percy! i wonât ever do this again!â
â Ë・ âŕ¨âĄŕ§â Ë・ â â Ë・ âŕ¨âĄŕ§â Ë・ â â Ë・ âŕ¨âĄŕ§â Ë・ â â Ë・ âŕ¨âĄŕ§â
as you walk back to your cabin, percy in the middle of you and luke, youâre thinking all about how much youâve fallen for luke and how excited you are to build your future with him (oop).
and as all three of you walk toward the poseidon cabin, you mouth to luke âstay outside for a minuteâ. you and percy walk inside and you make up some excuse to go back out there.
you go back outside where luke still is and you hug him around his waist. âthat date was fun.. until.. yknowâ you said laughing.
he rests his chin on the top of your head, and laughs. âyea. i always love spending time with my sunshine.â he says as he kisses the top of your head and pulls away.
you smile and look at his left eye, his lips, then to his right eye (triangle method lol). you lean in and kiss his soft lips as his arms find their way to your waist and yours to his neck. as you both pull away, foreheads touching, luke whispers with a smile,
âmy cabin. 10:30 pm. make sure percyâs asleep.â you lightly laugh and pull away going into your cabin. as luke is about to walk to his counselor duties, he sees percy in the window giving him the death glare. he flinches and he awkwardly smiles and walks backwards until percy walks away from the window.
â Ë・ âŕ¨âĄŕ§â Ë・ â â Ë・ âŕ¨âĄŕ§â Ë・ â â Ë・ âŕ¨âĄŕ§â Ë・ â â Ë・ âŕ¨âĄŕ§â
๨ৠa/n ๨ŕ§-(PT2??) first imagine done! i really hope u liked this one. pls request some!! i love writing for our fav evil boyfriend lol. and give me feedback! iâm new to this whole âimaginesâ thing haha <3 (btw idk how to put my requests thing on so just pm me with themđŤśđťđŤśđť)

Youâre late for your date.
Like, Late late.
And of course, if the situation were switched, you wouldnât have minded.
In fact, you would have expected it.
But you are you and Mammon is Mammon.
So of course, his leniency for being ignored is next to zero.
He leans against the front door inside the common room of the House of Lamentation. And he looks at his watch.
4:00
4:00
Youâre an hour late.
And of course, Mammon tried to play it cool at first, swiping through his D.D.D with an unimpressed look on his face. Heâs cool. Nonchalant. His brothers canât know heâs internally freaking out;
Because heâs totally not.
Of course not. No way. Not over you of all people.
But he canât hide the jitters so graciously given to him by his nervous system.
âAre you being stood up?â, Satan calls from a nearby armchair in the room, not bothering to look up from what heâs reading.
âI ainât being stood up! Theyâll be here, theyâre justâŚbusy. Yeah, thatâs it. Theyâre busy.â
Asmo lays upside down on the couch, scrolling on his own D.D.D.
âOf course they stood him up, theyâd much rather go on a date with mwahâ, he gloats from his position.
âOi! Shut up will ya?!â, Mammon screams back, now standing rigidly, hands balled up at his side in anger, leaning into the conversation, ready to make it an argument.
As he takes another breath to get a word out, Satan cuts him off.
âWhere were you going anyway?â
âYeah, where?â, Asmo brightly echos back.
Mammon sighs, body relaxing as he slouches back into his leaning position.
âWe were supposed to go to Devil Coast âbout an hour ago. But of course MC ainât got a bone of urgency in their body.â
He grunts, frustratingly looking down at his D.D.D. Twenty-five messages. No replies. What was up with ya?
Asmo cackles wildly, âMaybe they forgot about you, hm?â
Mammonâs face begins to heat up with anger.
âListen here you little-â
Satan once again cuts him off. âWe all know thereâs no way theyâd forget about Mammon. Heâs much too loudâ, he says, turning his page.
âWould yâall shuddup? Jeezâ, Mammonâs tone becomes lethal in a way his brothers know they should stop pushing, so they do, shooting each other concerned glances.
âHave they texted you back at all?â, questions Satan.
Mammon sighs, âNo, not yet.â
He looks down at his phone, scrolling through your message thread.
2:50 PM
Mammon: Yo! Ready to go?
Mammon: Iâm by the front door, Iâll be waitinâ for ya.
Mammon: Remember to bring your coat ya dummy, cause I ainât lettingâ you borrow mine this time!
Mammon: Okay
Mammon: Maybe I would let ya borrow it if you really needed it and were shivering and stuff and needed The Great Mammonâs help to warm ya up.
Mammon: But you gotta say please đ
2:57 PM
Mammon: Alright, where are ya?
Mammon: Thought we agreed on 3:00
Mammon: Do ya need more time gettinâ ready?
Mammon: Tryinâ to look good for your first, huh?
Mammon: Iâll wait a little longer for ya.
3:10 PM
Mammon: Hurry it up, will ya?
Mammon: I understand wantinâ to look nice, but itâs ten after! Ten!
Mammon: Ya know, youâre the only human that keeps me waitinâ like this!
3:30 PM
Mammon: Okay, yer beinâ kinda ridiculous right now.
Mammon: I mean come on, ya gotta date with Mammon. THE Mammon. Ya know how lucky you are?
Mammon: Alotta people would kill to be in your position.
3:35 PM
Mammon: But of course I wouldnât go with them. I wouldnât go on a date with anyone but you, okay?
Mammon: Thatâs why you need to get yer ass down here!
3:40 PM
Mammon: Youâve got some nerve makinâ THE Mammon wait around for ya!
3:45 PM
Mammon: Whatever, isnât like I wanted to go out with ya anyway.
Mammon: I was doinâ this for you, ya know.
Mammon: Why would I wanna be see around with some lousy human?
Mammon: What am I, yer babysitter?
3:55 PM
Mammon: Look, I didnât mean that, alright?
Mammon: Please come down.
âAre you sure theyâre not asleep?â, Satan ponders curiously.
âNah, I donât think so. Weâve been talkinâ about this for weeksâ, Mammon says defeatedly, bringing his hand up to rub the back of his neck.
âAre you sure theyâre okay?â, Asmo asks, voice laced with concern.
âOkay?!â, Mammon shoots his attention to the avatar of lust. âWah- what- why wouldnât they be okay?â
Asmo looks around sheepishly, bringing his nails up to his lips to bite them, something he never does unless heâs either A) super stressed or B) covering something up.
Mammon steps towards his brother, anger beginning to boil, knowing what his mannerisms mean. âWhadda you know that I donât?! Câmon, spill it!â
The urgency in his voice compels Asmo to speak, knowing how sensitive his brother is when it comes to you.
âWell⌠I promised them I wouldnât tell youâŚâ
âTell me what?!â
His brother remains quiet for a moment.
âAsmoâŚâ, Mammon threatens dangerously.
âUgh, okay Iâll tell youâ, Asmo sighs, mumbling quickly under his breath, âMC, please forgive me!â
Mammon stares at his brother impatiently as he starts,
âWell, MC came to me the other day after class. I knew something was wrong because there were tears in their beautiful eyesâ, Asmo lays his hand across his forehead as if he were faint.
âSkip the dramatics and keep talkinâ!â
âOkay, sheesh. So MC came to me and told me they havenât been feeling very good lately.â
âWhat, are they sick or somthinâ?â
âNo no, nothing like that. More like, their brain feels sick? They said they donât really know why, but theyâve been feeling bad about themselves lately - which I told them was totally ridiculous! AND I offered them a full makeover WITH facial and they denied it, but that always makes ME feel better.â
Asmo pouts before continuing, âPlus, with all the extra work Lucifer and Lord Diavolo have been giving them with the student council, they said they feel like theyâre under so much pressure, theyâre gonna crack soon.â
âWhy ainât they tellinâ me any of this!?â
âBecause,â Asmo says annoyed, âthey donât want to upset you!â
âWhat? Thatâs ridiculous!â, exclaims Mammon.
Asmo matches his volume, âI know right?! Thatâs what I told them! But they said you were so excited about your date that they didnât wanna ruin it- hey, where are you going!?â, Asmo yells as Mammon walks out of the room.
âWhereâd ya think! Iâm gonna go talk to MC!â, Mammon yells back.
So thatâs why you werenât there? Youâve been hurting? For awhile it seems, and you didnât tell him?
Heâs gotta admit, heâs a little hurt. But he knows this isnât about him right now.
Itâs about you.
Mammon didnât know he would be nervous to see you until he was standing in front of your door. What if says the wrong thing and makes it worse? What if he canât help you at all? What if he made you feel this way?
Okay. He realizes with that last one that heâs spiraling. Time to fix this.
He lifts a shaky hand to your door, knocking three times rhythmically - the one you know is his knock. And only his.
He cringes when he hears your weak voice choke out a small âcome inâ.
The room is dark; All the lights are out and itâd be pitch black save for the window next to your bed, illuminating your form, a shivering lump hiding under your blanket.
He lets out a sigh as he walks further in. He should have known about this. He should have been able to pick up on this. Boyfriend of the year, huh?
You sniffle as you pop your head out from under your hiding place.
âH-hey Mamsâ, you hiccup, giving away the tears that still stream down your face. âI-Iâm sorry I ruined our date. I should have texted you, I-I justâŚâ
Mammon walks till heâs leaning right over you, hands on his hips. âUh-uh, I donât care about that right now. What I do care about is you, mainly why didnât ya tell me you were feelinâ like this before our date?â
The tone is his voice gives way to his own hurt, and you canât help but start to cry again at the sound of it, knowing itâs your fault.
âShh, shhh,â he quickly sits down on the bed next to you and puts an arm around your shoulders, pulling you into a hug. âI ainât mad at ya or anything, I just wanna know why.â
He knows why; Asmo told him. But, he wants to hear it from you.
You pull your arm out from under the blanket (and Mammonâs hold) to wipe your face. âIâm fine really, itâs justâ, you sniffle, but Mammon cuts you off.
âYa clearly not, câmon MCâ, he says, oceanic eyes meeting yours and - itâs hard not to crack under that gaze. âTell me whatâs the matter, please.â
Mammon stares at you in silence, signaling that itâs your turn to talk, and he would quietly listen. As long as you trust him, heâd always listen to whatever it is you have to say, no matter what.
You sit up a little straighter, pulling your arm out from under the comforter to wipe your tears. Composing yourself, you look into his eyes. His face softens at the sight.
Clearing your throat you start, âI donât know. Iâve just been so overwhelmed.â
âOverwhelmed with what? All that work Lucifer and Lord Diavolo keep pushinâ on you? Tell âem to shove it!â
You shoot him a dangerous look. âWe both know I canât do that.â
âSure ya can, I do it all the time!â, Mammon proudly declares, making you smile brightly and chuckle.
âAnd you always end up hanging from the raftersâ, you laugh.
âI never said I got away with itâ, he replies, smiling just as brightly back.
Your giggle peters out as you begin to speak again. âIâve got so much more work to do and so little time to do itâ, you frown. âAnd Iâve been pushing myself really hard! And- I dunno. I guess itâs taking a toll on me.â
âYeah, Asmo said you were havinâ it pretty rough.â
At the mention of Asmoâs name, you shoot upwards in shock.
âHe told you?!â
âCourse he did. Did ya forget which ones of us you can trust with secrets?â.
You grumble in anger. âThat little - UGH! Iâm gonna kill him.â
âLetâs put murder on the back burner,â Mammon says, pushing your shoulder to lay you back down in your slouching position. âHowâs âbout ya tell me whatâs really botheringâ ya and Iâll help ya threaten the primadonna later, yeah?â.
You give him the side eye, but collapse under his gaze. Curse those eyes! You swear he can put you under some kind of truth spell with those things.
âFine. I guess⌠itâs just⌠IâŚâ
âAny day now, Treasure.â
You make an exasperated noise and glare at him. âYou know itâs not fair to use that word on me when Iâm upset.â
âWhen youâre upset at me. And yer not upset at me right now, right? Please say rightâ, he finishes his sentence with a sense of urgency, now worried that he could be the cause.
Heâs wracking his brain for anything he could have said or done recently that made you upset. Are you mad at him cause he teased you the other day when you did your makeup differently. He told ya he only did it cause he liked it. Are you mad because he cheated off of you in potions class? Well, heâs your first, dammit! You should be helping him anyways. Thatâs what a loyal subject does.
âNo, no itâs not you. I just havenât been feeling very good about myself lately.â
âWhat! Thatâs ridiculous!â, he shouts and - heâs trying to be helpful in his own way, but his raising voice makes you wince. He notices, quickly shifting his tone. âI mean, whatâs there not to like, doll.â
You smile to yourself at the nickname. Heâs trying his hardest to be sweet. You should try your hardest to let him in on your thoughts a bit too.
âI donât like the way I look. Iâm not pretty, Iâm not cool, I donât even know what you see in me.â
âDonât be dumb, MC!â
âMammon, look at you! Youâre you. Youâre one of the seven demon lords of hell, youâre a whole model, and youâre one of the coolest guys Iâve ever met - Devildom, Human Realm, or celestial! You know youâre hot, so Iâm worriedâŚâ, you trail off quietly.
âWorried bout what, MC?â, he asks at your hesitance, worry evident in his eyes. He places his hand on top of yours on the bed without breaking eye contact.
ââŚIâm worried that one day youâll realize youâre too good for me and leave.â
âLeave? Whaddaya talkinâ about? How would I leave? I live here too ya knowâ, he says, poking your nose.
âYou know what I mean, Mammonâ, you say swiping his hand away from your face. âYouâll leave me.â
Mammon rolls his eyes, waving a hand towards your direction dismissively. âOh yeah, Iâll leave you alright. Thatâs exactly why I was waitinâ for ya at the door for an hour to take ya on a date. Cause I wanna leave ya soooo bad. Do ya see how ridiculous you sound?â.
You sigh, eyes looking towards the bedsheets as you play with his hand that has found its way back to yours. You donât look up as you speak. âSee, I didnât even come down for our date. Or text you. I just moped around up here. Im a terrible partner. And Iâm sure youâre gonna realize it soon.â
Mammon makes a âtchâ noise with his tongue, before grabbing you by the chin and making you look into his eyes, making you gasp in surprise.
âAnd ya think Iâm such a great boyfriend, huh? Iâm just the best? The guy who spends his free time at the casino runninâ up scams? The guy who used ta blame his screw ups on ya to get outta trouble? Yeah MC, Iâm a real peach. Cream of the crop if ya ask meâ, he lectures, voice dripping with sarcasm.
âWhat are you trying to sayâ, you question, grabbing his wrist to take his hand off your chin, to which he carefully obliges.
âIâm sayinâ that Iâm not so great myself. But you still love me, right?
âYeah, and?â
âExactly. Iâve got flaws, weâve all got flaws, even father had flaws, clearlyâ, he mumbles the last part under his breath.
âI wouldnât stop lovinâ ya over any dumb thing like looks or status. In fact, I canât think of a single reason why Iâd stop lovinâ ya, ya dumb human. Sorry âboutcha luck, but yer stuck with The Great Mammon foreverâ, he jokes, ruffling your hair.
âWhat about when I die? Iâm human, youâll outlive me by a long shot. Donât you want to be with someone, I donât know, with the sameâŚlife span as you?â
âNah, Iâll still love your dumbass skeleton when youâre a stupid ghost.â
âHow romantic.â
âListen. My point is Iâm yours and youâre mine. That ainât changinâ, alright? And Iâm not mad âbout our date, weâll reschedule it. Just next time, ya could let me know before I stand by the front door for over an hour like a jackass. My brothers got enough to make fun of me over already.â
He pulls a little smile out of you with that last one.
âAnd about all that student council junk Lucifer and Lord Diavolo keep thrownâ on ya, Iâll talk to them. Maybe theyâll let you divide it up between all of us, alright?â.
You sniffle, wiping your face once more and shaking your head in an affirmative nod. âSounds good. Thank you, Mams. Iâm sorry.â
âCâmon now, quit yer apologizinâ. Itâs fine. You apologize for somethinâ like that again, Iâm tellinâ Beel you ate his pudding from Madam Screams.â
âYou wouldnât dare.â
âOh, Iâll dare alright, ân then someâ, he jokes, tackling you to the bed. âWhy donât we watch a movie or somethinâ. You gotta make up the lost date time you owe me.â
You laugh at his antics, agreeing. âOkay, okay. Iâm on it.â
As you sit in front of your shared DVD collection to pick tonightâs selection, you throw your voice over your shoulder.
âHey Mams?â
âYeah?â, he asks from his spot on your bed, scrolling on his D.D.D.
âThanks.â
âAnytime, Treasure.â

Wrong Number 1
Eddie kept up a texting chain with Steve while making himself a breakfast of coffee and cereal. He hadn't felt like this in a long time. Not since, well, when he thought of it when he was a teenager up all night in chat rooms and forums. When you found someone who you just clicked with.
[11:30] Any advice on how to fry an egg with a perfectly runny yolk?
(11:32) You like runny yolks??? 𤢠(11:33) It's scrambled or nothing for me (11:33) Cant help ya even if I wanted to
[11:35] I just want an egg on my avo toast
Normally Robin fried the eggs for breakfast. Her yolks were always perfect. But unlike Steve, she'd actually scored last night and was still with whoever she'd gone home with last night.
Eddie couldn't help but roll his eyes at the cliche. A guy who jogged and then came back home for some avocado toast with an egg on top? He just had to let his stance be known.
(11:35) Next ur gonna tell me bout your acai smoothie bowl rite? (11:36) Avo toast? Really???
Steve realized how he was coming off and had to quickly amend it.
[11:38] It's not what you think! We only got the avocados to make some guac the other day. There was one left and I wanted to use it before it went bad. And I'm all guac'd out. Hence the toast.
(11:39) At least you didn't use the avocado to make like ice cream or some shit
Finished with his own, normal, regular, average citizen breakfast, Eddie cleared his place and started to actually get ready for the day. His shift went from 2 to 10 tonight, so he needed to prepare for the long haul.
While brushing his teeth, getting dressed, and making something for his lunch later, he and Steve kept up the texts. Through their conversation he found out Steve's favorite ice cream (peanut butter), that he could cook eggs just about any way except sunny side up, and that he lived with a roommate named Robin.
Eddie got to his place of work and in a place like that you need to have some semblance of focus and attention, so he told Steve he had to get to work. He realized he was basically saying 'busy now, text you later?' to a stranger he'd only started talking to last night. Steve was completely in his rights to end the conversation there.
He could've ended it at any time really. What obligation did he have to keep on talking to him?
[2:01] Okay. Talk to you later
Steve stared at the message, already in the middle of agonizing over it when Robin finally came through the door of their apartment.
"Good afternoon. I wanna feel offended that I didn't get any texts or calls asking if I'm okay but I'm gonna choose to think it means you trust me and are a great judge of character."
For the first time in a while, Steve checked the time and actually realized how long it had been.
"Shit, Robs, I'm sorry." It had been over 12 hours and he hadn't checked in on her. All because he'd been texting a random number. "So you had a good time?"
Steve had been sitting on the couch and Robin plopped right down, laying her head in his lap.
"It was magical. Like something out of a movie."
"Aren't you glad I made you go and talk to her?", Steve smiled smug.
Robin smushed his face with her hands with a groan. "Don't look at me like that. You were right, okay? Me and her hit it off like, like uh, one of your sports metaphors."
"Robin you were in a soccer league just last year, stop acting like you don't know sports."
"Anyway, something grand must've kept your attention off me. Things go well with that girl you were talking to?"
"Umm, yeah."
Robin sat up, eyes narrowing. "And you came back here with her? Gross! Steve! Did you do it on the couch?!" She shot up immediately.
"I didn't", Steve rolled his eyes.
It was one of their main rules. No sex in the common areas of the apartment. Steve wasn't gonna tell her about the wrong number given to him. And he especially wasn't going to tell her he kept talking to it. The following lecture would have been unbearable.
"She gave me her number and we've just been texting back and forth."
Robin slowly sat back down on the couch. "Just texting? That's all you did?"
"That's all."
"Wow. You usually move faster than that."
"Well, I want something a little more this time. But enough about my snail pace romance. Let's talk about you and that girl, what was her name?"
He and Robin sat a long while, talking about her night, eventually going out for lunch together too. Not-Misty had said they were at work, but Steve couldn't help himself when he saw that Robin had ordered a burger with avocado on it and Steve had gotten a taco salad that came with, you guessed it, avocado.
[3:14] image.jpeg [314] Okay me and Robin might have a problem. But I swear it's not on purpose!
"Did you just send a picture of our lunch to someone?", Robin asked.
"Yeah to uh, to Misty. We were talking about avocados earlier and I figured she'd get a kick out of it."
Robin smiled through her chewing. She teased but she was glad that her friend had made a connection last night.
Meanwhile, Eddie saw the message, but didn't have a chance to reply, even on his lunch break. Through all the texting, he had forgotten to charge his phone, so it was on the plug and he was leaving it alone for now while he talked to his co-worker, Grant. He went through the rest of his shift, thinking about Steve.
What did he look like? How old was he? Where did he live?
He got off and made his way back home, stopping off somewhere to get dinner. It was a sandwich shop and he honestly contemplated getting avocado on his just to see Steve's reaction but he resisted.
'I can't be that down bad that I'm overthinking food now', he thought to himself.
When he got back home, he turned the tv on and took out his phone to reply to Steve right away.
(10:31) Back at home now (10:32) Work was crazy (10:34) And the 1st step to recovery is admitting u have a problem (10:36) But thru hard work we can get you addicted to a sensible veggie (10:37) Like broccoli
He thought since he kept Steve waiting for so long it might take some time for a reply to come, but his phone pinged almost immediately.
[10:39] First of all, avocado is a fruit. Second, I eat plenty of other vegetables. And third, what happened at work?
(10:41) It may be a fruit but I dont want it in my smoothie (10:42) And some guy came in and started throwing axes at the wall
Sunday evenings were usually more relaxed. It was why Eddie typically didn't work Friday or Saturday nights unless he needed some extra cash or they needed someone on deck.
[10:44] Hold the duck up someone was throwing axes!! [10:44] *duck [10:45] *FUCK
Eddie snickered through his eating and had to take a moment to swallow before something came up. He always enjoyed telling people what he did for a living.
(10:46) Cool your jets man (10:47) I work at an axe throwing range (10:48) The problem with this dude was he didn't have an appointment (10:48) Just came in and started throwing an axe at the wall
[10:50] Are you okay? That sounds dangerous
(10:50) My uncle handled it (10:51) Eventually the dude left
[10:52] Oh wow. Well I'm glad you're okay. Axe throwing tho. What an interesting job for someone of your age? đ¤ˇ
Steve was lying in bed and he buried his face into his pillow as he sent it with the shrug emoji. It was so transparent, he knew it. But he needed to have a better idea of who he was talking to. That way when Robin did eventually find out, he'd be able to tell her something, anything.
(10:53) Smooth (10:53) I'll tell you mine if you tell me yours
Eddie knew now was the time to be cautious. But he was also curious as to how much Steve would tell him and just what he wanted to know. He wasn't disappointed.
[10:54] Male, 23, 5'11
It was like the bare minimum of information and yet Eddie was already aggressively tamping down any hope that he might have a chance. Without his permission, hope bubbled up anyway
(10:55) Male, 24 going on 25, also 5'11
Steve stared at the text with the mystery person, mystery man's information. It seemed like so little and yet so much. He still hadn't an idea of what he looked like. But now he could at least get a general silhouette.
(10:56) Ur not one of those guys who lies about his height are you?
[10:57] Robin says my hair gives me two inches but she has no idea what she's talking about.
Eddie was thinking about how Steve must wear his hair. It could be in a sizeable pompadour, or maybe a nice afro. Maybe it was in a bun all the time? That was not what he typed out however.
(10:59) You know what they say (10:59) It's not the size but what u do with it
Okay this was it. This was where Steve stopped texting him. You can't just say that to guys you don't know-ping!
Eddie bit his lip and only had one eye open as he looked at Steve reply, preparing for the worst.
[11:01] Oh I know how to use my inches
Eddie dropped his phone onto the table and had to get up and pace, touch his face, his hair, throwing his hands in the air. Was this flirting? This felt like flirting. He wished he knew for sure. Maybe it was the lack of emoji. Had Steve put a winking face, he'd know for certain. Eddie leaned against his fridge, staring at his phone, sitting innocently on the table.
On the other side, Steve was burying his face into his pillow, pretending he didn't just say that. Would it come off as playful? As flirty? As casual? Should he have sent a wink? The seconds ticked and it felt too late. Like coughing after saying something awkward.
God, he was so desperate. Why was he even still texting? He had work in the morning. He should start preparing for bed so he had any hope of getting up on time. Steve pushed off the bed and went to his closet when he heard the notification sound and instantly returned.
(11:05) Let's get out the measuring tape (11:05) image.jpeg
Steve felt his heart skip a beat. The picture attached was of the very top of mystery man's head. He was holding up a lock of long, curly hair into the air. Steve studied the picture like he was getting paid to do it. He couldn't see any lower than the bangs on his forehead but there was still plenty to see.
The rings on his fingers for one, how his curls went this way and that. Steve quickly saved it and then replied with a similar pose, holding some hair by the fingers as far as it would go above his head.
[11:07] image.jpeg [11:08] I think you have me beat
They texted for about an hour more before Steve finally decided to be an adult and put himself to sleep, bidding mystery man good night.
Part 3
Fun fact, years ago I worked at an axe throwing place and yes, what happened to Eddie did in fact happen to me! On like my first week too I think

My Shifting Story That Keeps Me Motivated To This Day
Well hello again! I think it is time I share my own "almost" success story. I know a lot of you might not be interested in reading about my ALMOST success. But trust me... the more I tink about my own story the more I realize how silly it was of me to procrastinate actually doing it for so long. It's almost funny. But let's get into it, shall we?
As I have already mentioned it in my previous posts (please do read them if you haven't already to fill in any blanks that you may or may not have). I have been at a very dark place at that time. And I didn't wanna live the way that I had for as long as I could remember, because I simply wasn't happy.. with my life or my family. And I felt like I was a good kid. And I was! So when I discovered the subliminal world.. I saw it as my escape and a way to finally become happy. And that's when the subliminal "Wake up in your desired family" came into picture.
Like I mentioned before, there were only a couple success stories under that subliminal, but at that time our community was even smaller compared to what it is now. And those 10 - 14k views was more than enough for me to believe that it was a real deal. It's a bit funny to think about it now because these days we tend to pick subliminals that has thousands and thousands and thousands of views? Am I right? :) That's how we decide whether the subliminal works or not.
Anyways.. back to my storytime. I have already mentioned in another post of mine that those success stories that I did see all said the same thing. That for them to start feeling the results it took them a couple months. And if you remember as well as I do. Back then everyone set a limiting belief that for a subliminal message to start working you need to listen to it for at least 21 days. Even tho that wasn't true, I didn't know much about shifting so I believed it. And I also wasn't desperate enough, so since the stories told me it took THEM 1 - 2 months, I figured it'd take me the exact amount of time. And I thought it was nothing compared to the future I was gonna have.
So all that I did for those couple months was listen to that subliminal at least 1 hour a day and sometimes if I could overnight with the idea that I could wake up in my desired family any given moment. Pay attention to that. I didn't set a deadline or put pressure on myself for doing anything wrong. I just listened and knew it was going to happen. When exactly? No idea. How exactly? Not a clue, but I didn't care. Because knowing less was actually more of a blessing than I thought. I had no limiting beliefs. All it did was awaken my inner child and that whole journey felt magical to me and I really looked foward to my results.
Probably a month passed by when I started getting tired around the same time, every single day so I'd take naps. At a time a half an hour nap was more than enough to make me feel rested and I'd get in the state of being awake yet asleep at the same time. You know what I am talking about. The state during which it feels like you are in and out of sleep. When the sounds feel like they are far far away and then they dissapear. It almost sounds like I was close to tapping in the void state, no? :)
So whenever I'd feel tired I'd just have one earbud in my ear and lay in whatever comfortable position I wanted to lay in. It usually was on my side. And I had no intention to shift because I KNEW it was gonna happen either way. So I'd lay down and just have myself doze off listening to my playlist (I had a couple boosters too but then I'd just loop the main subliminal). And then I started feeling unusual sensations and feelings I have never felt before. All I did was just lay there and day dream about how I was gonna wake up in my desired room and I tried imagining it in detail. How I was gonna walk out of my room and see my best friends that I was going to shift there with. And literally all I did was just loop that scene because it made me happy :')
I keep rambling haha I'm sorry. Back to what happened. I was probably a month in when I started to get tired and naking naps around the same time and suddenly my naps were different? I would just mind my own business, think about my future when suddenly I would feel this insanely strong sensation that I was being lifted off of my bed and that my body was turning and flying somewhere?? But because I didn't know exactly what it was it'd freak me out and my body would flinch. That's when I'd recover the feeling of my body back and it felt like I'd literally fall back into my bed. And I mean LITERALLY get slammed back into my body. And this wasn't a one time thing. Same thing kept happening every single day for like 2 weeks (until I got insecure and shifted my focus somehwere else as I've mentioned in another post). What's funny is that I didn't even realize what was happening. I was just like "Oh? That's a new feeling" I was just curious and wanted for it to keep happening so I could understand it better. I only realized what it was when it stopped happening all together and for that I blame myself.
But you know what? It's okay. I've learnt so much since then. And it's insane how all I did every day was look for other success stories to convince myself that this was real. When I had my own very real success story. I KNOW all fo this is real because I experienced it. And I am done looking for a confirmation from other people. I know the truth and that's enough. And you should too. You don't need any of these methods. All you need is to do whatever makes you feel comfortable and happy and that you know works for YOU. Cause what actually matters is that YOU KNOW is gonna work for you. That's all that ANY of us really need.
I know this is a lot, but if you actually read this I hope it helped and made you realize something... anything really. Be your own success story and make your dreams come true.
I believe soon you will hear about my own final success story:) Goodbye for now. Next post will be more about my fairy companion. Do look forward to that!
Much love,
Foxy âĄđŚ

OKAY I RAN TO REQUEST THIS - I just saw a TikTok where a guy set up a game of uno on the bed next to his sleeping wife and put a few cards in her hand and then woke her up and told her it was her turn and she had to draw 4 so she wakes up all confused but starts playing and the husband keeps putting down +2 and +4 cards until she gets angry and goes back to sleep and you cannot tell me that itâs not poly!paul and Jared canon that they would go to GREAT LENGTHS to pull this prank with their chests and convince you that youâd all been playing uno for hours before you fell asleep and also you were losing (despite knowing youâre a grumpy loser)
Idk if the link is gonna work here but here it is anyway https://vm.tiktok.com/ZGe4tFr8H/
i don't think anything in this world could possible be more poly!paulxreaderxjared coded than this
...
"babe," jared's warm, calloused hand was gently running over your bicep, squeezing the muscle there to wake you up.
you hummed, groaning as you reached your hands up to blearily knuckle at your eyes only to realized you had something in your hand. once you'd gotten your eyes opened, you saw 6 bright yellow uno cards staring you in the face.
confused, you looked over to jared and then paul, both of whom also had uno cards in their hands (suspiciously, both jared and paul only had 3). "it's your turn princess," paul encouraged after a moment, both boys eagerly waiting to see what you were going to do next.
you frowned, furrowing your eyebrows together as you tried to figure out when the hell you were playing uno with them. from the best of your memory, you'd fallen asleep waiting for the two of them to come home from patrol and weren't up when they actually did arrive.
much to jared and paul's delight, your paranoia about looking like you couldn't remember anything got the better of you just nodded, yawning before you laid down a yellow 1 card.
while you tried to figure out how you were going to get rid of any cards when all you had were yellow ones, paul and jared were quick to both lay down cards: paul with a yellow 5 and jared with a red 5.
with a huff, you pulled a card from the stack in the middle, and it was (unfortunately for you) a blue 3 - nothing of any use for you. so you continued to pull cards, needing to pull over 10 cards to finally get a red or a 5 thanks to paul and jared fucking around with the card stack prior to waking you up.
"what the fuck," you mumbled, still not entirely sure if you were in some kind of weird fever dream or something as you laid down the red 5 that you'd managed to pull.
you now sported a stack of 15 cards while jared and paul were down to only 2 each, "sheesh babe," jared laughed, "must be bad luck or something," he added, both him and paul barely containing their laughter over your disgruntled expression.
while paul laid down a blue 5, jared went and smacked down a green 3. you looked back down at your stack of a whopping 15 cards, quickly realizing that something was definitely up seeing as your entire stack was yellow and none of them were a 3.
"okay you know what this is just stupid-" you started, rolling your eyes as you tossed your cards down so you could get up. both paul and jared burst into laughter then as you got up and stormed off into the bathroom so you could splash some water on your face.
of course, both boys were quick to follow you into the bathroom, already prepared to deal with your wrath once you pieced together that they not only woke you up in the middle of the night, but woke you up in the middle of the night just to fuck with your head.
"oh poor babe," jared drolled when he saw the pout on your face as you splashed some water on you. he came to step behind you, sliding his hands over your hips so he could pull your back against his.
"jared cameron!" you snapped when you felt the way he ground his hips into yours. you sat up, spinning around to smack his bicep before prying his hands off of your hips so you could go grab a hand towel to wipe your face off.
jared was cracking himself up, wrapping his beefy arm around your shoulders so he could pull you close and press a rather sloppy kiss to your temple before he was releasing you so your other imprinter could have a turn.
"careful, she's real feisty," jared teased as he passed paul so he could head back into the bedroom to presumably clean up the gaslighting uno game they'd played with you.
you were glaring holes into the back of jared's (beyond well sculpted) shoulders, quickly giving up when paul stepped into your line of sight, "princess," he chuckled, sliding his hands over your waist so he could pull you into his chest for a tight hug despite the fact that you had now crossed your arms over your chest, "'m sorry," he mumbled into your hair, his lips curling into a smile, "you're just so easy to mess with," he added, laughing when you rolled your eyes, squirming out of his death grip so you could storm back into the bedroom where jared was now laying down, one arm flexed behind his head as he held some uno cards in the other, already knowing how absolutely crazy you went over seeing his muscles like that.
"round 2?" jared proposed, smirking when you huffed, stomping over to him so you could snatch the pile of cards out of his hands.
"only if you two fuckers play fair-" you grumbled as you got back onto the bed, cracking a smile when paul came and sat down behind you, pulling you inbetween his legs.
"of course we'll play fair," paul reassured, that same teasing tone in his voice that had you knowing they would definitely be tag-teaming you again shortly.
"nice try lahote," you rolled your eyes as you looked over your shoulder at him, "you're gonna see all my cards like this," you added and he dramatically covered his eyes with one hand.
"promise i won't peak," he mused, laughing when you rolled your eyes but obliged nonetheless, seeming to enjoy the heat that being in his lap provided you.
you quickly shuffled the cards before passing them around so all three of you could get back to playing.

Dust
I didnât edit this, I didnât really want to
Pairing: Buck x Eddie x Reader
đ¤itâs drabble timeđ¤
đŞđ¤remember to reblogđ¤đŞ
Notes: hahaaaa Iâm â¨FINE⨠P.S. imma fix my header itâs driving me CRAZY or Iâll forget in the next 10 seconds
It wasnât that things were badâŚokay things were bad. Itâs just they could be so much worse, they could always be worse of course but right now just seemedâŚbad.
You laid in Bucks bed, staring at the ceiling, it really needed to be dusted. He wasnât one to dust, in fact he hadnât even opened the duster youâd bought him for Valentineâs Day. It was a gag gift, the watch youâd bought was the real gift. Where was that duster anywayâŚmaybe he-
âLooking at how dusty my roof is again?â Buck asks as he walks up the stairs, stepping around his bed to grab a hoodie off the railing
âYeahâ Is all you say, thereâs more youâd like to say, about how dusty the roof isâŚbut whatâs the point in talking about it?
âI did dust the tv the other dayâ He says, walking over his bed, stepping over you. âYouâre right I need to dust more often..â
He looks at you, the way youâre laying like a little starfish in the middle of his bed, he leans against one of the wooden supports.
âSoâŚdust bothering you today? He asks again, watching you. You shrug your shoulders, still staring at the ceiling
âYeahâ
Buck tosses his hoodie back to where it was, laying on the bed next to you, his legs hanging off the edge, his head on your arm
âYeah dust bothers me tooâ He says quietly, his hands resting on his torso.
The two of you justâŚlay there together for a whileâŚwatching the dust settle on the ceiling, time doesnât start moving again until the front door opens
âGuys? You home?â Eddie calls out, setting the McDonalds bags on the counter. He shrugs off his coat, walking up the stairs to Bucks bed
âHey, I brought lunch if you two are hungry. Itâs McDonalds, like, you know if that counts as lunch. I feel like itâs like a light lunch you know?â
âMcDonaldâs ainât what it used to beâ Buck agrees, looking over at him. He nudges you, a small smirk forming on your lips
âYou guys sound old as shitâŚâ
Eddie rolls his eyes and Buck snickers, turning to look at you
âYou realize youâre not that much younger right? Like youâre literally notâ
âYeah, I knowâ You say, your eyes closing softly
Eddie motions to you, his eyebrow raised, Buck points to the ceiling mouthing âdustâ
âI know youâre talking about meâ You say, your voice cracking just a little at the end. Tears fall down the sides of your head, but you donât bother wiping them away
âBuck still hasnât dusted the ceiling?â Eddie asks, looking up at it with you.
âNopeâ You say and Buck shrugs
âIâm a busy guy what can I say?â
âDo you want me to do it? I know where he put the dusterâ He backs down a step, watching you
âI donât knowâ You tell him truthfully âI think, I have toâ
âWe can help, you knowâ Buck says, looking at you as Eddie goes downstairs to grab the duster
âNo, I donât think you canâ You tell him, finally looking at him for the first time in hours. Heâs laid on his back, staring at you as you finally sit up, propped on one hand. He reaches up and you lay your head on his hand as he caresses your face
âWeâll always help you dust the ceiling, Dollface, you donât have to do it aloneâ He tells you, looking at you as he rubs his thumb over your cheek
Eddie comes back up, handing you the duster âYou do it when youâre ready. Weâll help catch anything that fallsâ

Terzo + being old đ´
PAPA EMERITUS III: Well⌠Iâm not perfect when it comes to remembering lyrics, as youâve noticed. Iâm sorry about that. Itâs an age thing, y'know? But Iâm sure some of you know the lyrics for this song. The last song. But you know, for an old guy, Iâm not very different. My hearing is really, really bad. So I need you to sing really loud if you know the lyrics. Silver Spring, Maryland, USA (September 22, 2015)
PAPA EMERITUS III: So where are you going afterwards? The night is young. Hm? Alright. My hearing is not what it used to be, sorry. I see you moving, and I hear shit, but⌠Anyways! Orlando, Florida, USA (October 10, 2015)
PAPA EMERITUS III: I am not as young as I look. But I can still tango. But y'know, after a quick, tasty start like thisâ I mean, we did quite good to start with, right? But you need to know, if I'm gonna stand up for one and a half hours and then... lay down... for even longer, I need toâ I need a little break. So now we're gonna do a slow song for you. MalmĂś, Sweden (February 25, 2016)
PAPA EMERITUS III: Right now, I'm just babbling so the other ones can have a little break. That's the thingâ we're not as young as we look. Detroit, Michigan, USA (October 3, 2016)
last quote is hidden because Terzo says a slur. (yes, i also was shocked he said this)
TW: ableism, R slur
PAPA EMERITUS III: Good evening, Los Angeles. The classic Wiltern, eh? So nice to see so many of you here tonight. This is getting a little bit of a nice habit, seeing each other like this, huh? I, for one, like it. How do you like this? Fabulous. Alright. I'm uh. I'm not talking this slow because I'm retarded, but because I'm not really as young as you think I am. Los Angeles, California, USA (October 20, 2016)

Got Me Thinking
Part 1: Butterflies
Synopsis: a reunion that is well overdue makes your heart flutter once you lay eyes on your first love in more than ten years and the feelings that you thought were long gone come rushing back
Pairing: Jack Harlow x Reader
Please Do Not Repost My Content Anywhere
Sighing to yourself, you quickly pulled out your phone and started looking for plane tickets to head back home to Louisville. It had been a little while since you had been back, but your biggest reason for going was to get away from him.
Him being your husband, Xavier.
The two of you had been married for only three years, but you were over it. You had come to the realization that the person you married was long gone and that there really was no hope left. The less that you were around him, the better.
You knew he was cheating on you and you recently discovered that he had gotten another woman pregnant and that she was due in less than a month.
He had no idea that you knew all of that information and since you found out, you had just been biding your time and had since opened up another bank account to save money in order to plan to get away from him.
The goal was to move back to Louisville so that you could be closer to your parents and siblings who stayed there while you were the only one that left.
Booking your flight, you closed your phone to begin packing since you would literally be leaving within the next few hours. At this point, you were desperate and longing for a peaceful environment.
You knew that he wouldn't ask any questions about where you were and it seemed as if it had gotten to the point where the two of you were simply roommates and you were completely okay with that.
It had been almost a week since you had seen him anyway.
A quick text was sent to your mom to let her know to expect you around midnight and she quickly responded back in excitement.
The plan was to divorce him by the end of this year because then you would have more than enough money to live off of for the time being once you moved back. Truth be told, you had enough money now, being a CRNA had its perks and it helped that you lived in California which had the highest pay for nurses because of the cost of living. Moving to Louisville would definitely be a pay cut, however you didn't even care. You just wanted to get away from him.
â
When you had finally touched down in Louisville at midnight, you told your mom not to worry about getting you from the airport but she insisted and wouldn't take no for an answer.
Once you slid into the passenger seat of her car after throwing your suitcase in the back, she immediately eyed you which made a sigh escape from your lips.
âHi to you too, mother.â
âI'm just waiting until the divorce is finalized so that I can throw you a party.â She said while following behind the other cars headed towards the highway.
âBy the end of the year. I told you that already.â
âBut what are we waiting for? Anything that you need, you know me and your dad will support you until you get settled back here in Louisville. He is a piece of shit and I'm tired of him treating my daughter as if she isn't the best thing to happen to his ungrateful ass.â
âHe wasn't always like this.â
âI know because if he was, ain't no way in hell he would have gotten my approval to marry you.â Your mother replied with her voice slightly raised and you simply sighed.
âYou deserve so much more and it is hard seeing my youngest child so unhappy all the time. So, I'm just going to say it.â
âMOM!â You replied turning to her with wide eyes because you knew what was going to happen next and what she was going to say because she said it every single time that you talked to her on the phone or facetime.
âJack wouldn't have treated you like this.â
âWill you ever let that go? We broke up more than 10 years ago! It was a mutual decision!â
âWell it needs to be a mutual decision for yall asses to get back together. Jack is the only son-in-law that I'm going to acknowledge at this point and I am waiting for the proposal. See? It's meant to be. I don't like his wife and I don't like your husband. There, that settles it.â
Any time that someone mentioned Jack, your heart immediately began to race and the butterflies in your stomach increased tenfold.
The two of you decided to end your relationship after dating from your freshman year in high school all the way up until senior year. It wasn't because either of you wanted to, it just was what was best. You were going to nursing school and Jack was trying to become a rapper and get a record deal and move to Atlanta. When you sat down and thought about it, the two of you could have made it work, but the last thing you wanted was for him to feel like he was being held back by you in any shape or form.
You saw how successful he was and was proud of him and never counted him out for a minute despite what people were saying around the two of you.
âWait, pause. When did he get married?!â
âTalk about a delayed reaction. But it only happened about ten months ago. You and Xavier were umm⌠starting to have your issues so I didn't mention it. I met her when I went to meet Maggie for lunch and she gave me⌠What's that word yall use now? The ick. And in not so many words when Maggie and I went to lunch, she told me she didn't like her either and that he should have married you. Jack even LOOKS unhappy. But you didn't hear that from me. Do what you want with that information. I mean you could always go over to Maggie and Brian's. It seems like he's always there and never at home. I wouldn't be at home either with someone like that.â
âMom! Quit it. I am here toâŚâ
âGet away from your cheating ass husband who is also about to have a baby on you? Go and get the man who has wanted you since you were fourteen.â
All you did was sigh because you knew deep down that your mother was right. But, you still had hesitations in the back of your mind. You highly doubt that Jack still felt the same about you all these years later. Besides, he had a whole wife and you could admit that your mother could be extra dramatic at times, so why would he marry her if he didn't even like her?
âOkay, changing the subject. What do you want to eat when we get home?â
âMom, it's one in the morning.â
âSo? What time do stomachs open?â
â
Later on in the day when you had gotten some much needed sleep, you had a craving for some Italian food and decided to go to a restaurant not too far from your parentsâ house and get your order to go. Your all time favorite, Vincenzo's.
In order to make it so no one in your house had to cook dinner, you took it upon yourself to get something for everyone. You had already placed your order and was waiting for it as you were scrolling on your phone, when suddenly you heard someone call your name from behind.
âY/N?â
Once you looked up and turned around, you came face to face with no one other than Jack's younger brother Clay. Who you hadn't seen since you left Louisville to go to nursing school.
âWell look who it is and who is all grown up. Hi, Clay.â You responded while giving him a hug. You remember him wanting to be just like Jack and would want to follow him around everywhere.
âJust visiting or moving back like your parents want?â He asked and all you could do was roll your eyes because you knew your mom would tell anyone who would listen.
âOh, so she's literally made it known to everyone that they want me to move back, but just visiting for right now. Had a taste for some Italian so here I am.â
âWhat are you doing tonight? Are you busy by any chance?â Clay asked, catching you off guard. Your only plans were to drink wine and watch tv until you passed out for exhaustion.
You simply shook your head no towards him.
âWell, it's Jackâs birthday and weâre throwing a surprise party for him and Urban. You should come. I know he would be happy to see you.â
You didn't even realize that it was in fact March 13th.
âClay, I don't know. We haven't seen each other in over ten years.â
âAll the more reason to come. JustâŚ. trust me on this. He would want you there and I won't get knocked upside the head for his gift not being here on time and I'll just say that you're the gift.â All you did was laugh and shake your head.
It wouldn't totally be a bad thing to see him, but what would you say when you did?
The butterflies were erupting in your stomach again and you looked back up at Clay before you talked yourself out of it.
âWhat time and where is it?â
â
Your older sister, Janelle was currently with you in your childhood bedroom helping you decide what to wear and of course she was picking out the more revealing outfits while you were simply trying to be modest.
âPut them titties on display! Show him what heâs been missing!â She yelled and you simply looked at her and rolled your eyes.
âYou are literally the worst and I should have asked Jeremiah.â
âShould have asked me what?â Your older brother and the middle child, Jeremiah asked as he popped his head into your room.
âWhat the? Since when do you live here?â You asked, confused by his sudden appearance.
âWell damn, I canât come and see my baby sister when sheâs here anymore? And besides, Janelle texted me and said you were going to a certain exâs birthday party. So, I needed to find out the details and especially when the wedding date is.â
âBecause Janelle cannot keep her mouth shut to save her life and yes I am. And wait a minute, WEDDING DATE? You two are just as insane as our mother.â
âShe wonât dress slutty though as Iâm suggesting.â Janelle said while rolling her eyes at you.
âYou want my ass and boobs out like Iâm not going to freeze.â
âHoes donât get cold.â She fired back, but you quickly gave it right back to her.
âIâm anemic.â
âYou know youâve always been it for him. I mean my baby sister is the shit and he let you get away and is now married to⌠ummâŚ. Someone that is not on his level.â Jeremiah said as he went over to your vanity to pick out jewelry that you would wear despite you not having an outfit.
Jeremiah was definitely the fashionista out of the three of you and you knew for a fact if he wasnât an orthopedic surgeon that he would definitely be doing big things in the fashion industry.
âSo, all of you have met her?!â
âAnd it was not a pleasant experience and one that had left a good first impression.â
Janelle got up to rummage through your suitcase and found a black halter top that she paired with tan cargo pants and proceeded to throw your New Balance 550âs at you that matched.
âHere, go put this on. Your boobs are going to be spilling out the top in this.â
âDid I ever tell you two how much you both get on my nerves?â
âAll the time, but itâs a good thing that we donât care. Now itâs time to catch us a man.â
âHeâs married.â
âAnd so are you. And both of you are miserable. Hurry up and make this happen, we have a wedding to plan.â
It was now 8 PM and you were sitting in the passengerâs seat of Clayâs car and the two of you were headed to where the surprise party was going to be held and he noticed how much you kept fidgeting.
âY/N, itâs going to be fine. I know he misses you even if he doesnât want to admit it at times. He is always asking our mom if she had talked to your mom lately and always asked how you were doing.â
âReally?â
All Clay did was nod his head as he slowed down to a complete stop at the red light in the intersection.
âLook, I⌠know he probably doesnât want you to know this, but Iâm telling you anyway.â
âTell me what?â Now you could feel your heart rate speeding up.
âWhen he found out that you were married that broke him even though he was trying to put up a front and now he probably wonât admit it if someone asked him. He has never moved on from you.â
âClayâŚ. Heâs married so, obviously he did move on.â
âHmm, if you could call it that.â He responded while snorting and trying to find a place to park so that the two of you could head inside.
âWait, what?â
âYou know from the start that we were always rooting for you two to be together. Even our parents were.â
âClay, I did not come here to break up a marriage.â
âI⌠itâs already broken despite it not even being an entire year yet, but you didnât hear that from me. But Jack has to see it for himself. Anyway, weâre here. And if nothing else tonight puts a smile on his face, I know you will when he sees you. His wife might show up, she might not⌠sheâs a piece of work.â
âAll of you give me entirely too much credit. I am nothing special.â
âAsk Jack if he feels the same way and I guarantee that heâs going to say that you are.â
The two of you walked in and Clay had mentioned that Jack and Urban were going to be there within the next ten minutes and now your butterflies were starting all over again as they erupted once more in your stomach.
When PG saw you, you were placed into bone crushing hugs and it was expressed how much you had been missed around Louisville, especially from Jack and that once he laid eyes on you that it would be a done deal.
Clay told you to hide to the side in the back corner as PG was in front of you so that when Jack walked in, he wouldnât be able to see you until everyone moved out of the way. He planned on everyone screaming âsurpriseâ when both of them walked in and then telling him that he wanted to start the party off right by showing him a gift that he had been patiently waiting for, and that gift was you.
It was now quiet in the room that the party was taking place and the lights had been shut off and you heard Jack and Urban mumbling to each other while trying to find the light switch. Once they did, everyone screamed âsurprise!â and the two of them were all smiles.
This was the first time that you had laid eyes on Jack in person in more than ten years and the butterflies erupted once more. He looked so good and it felt that your heart was about to beat out of your chest.
Clay had walked over towards him to give him a hug and then whispered in his ear and you were assuming that he was telling him about the so-called âgiftâ and the two of them started to walk towards where you were casually standing behind Ace and 2fo.
âI know that this will probably be your most favorite birthday gift that Iâve ever gotten you.â You heard Clay say and you simply smirked and laughed to yourself.
âHmm, Iâll be the judge of that.â You heard him answer and it was now go time.
âOkay, Ace and 2fo, move out of the way so that he can see his surprise. I made this happen by the way, just so you know.â Clay said and Jack immediately rolled his eyes before laughing.
Once Ace and 2fo moved, Jack came face to face with you and it seemed to be speechless and it was as if he couldnât believe that you were standing in front of him.
âHappy thirtieth birthday, Jackman, or should I say Jackson? Did you miss me?â

The Feral One ⢠Ch 20
Finnick x Y/N
Series Masterlist Link
I promise we will get into the timer stuff soon but I have to build up the plot firstâŚ
Content Warnings - None!
You wake up to Finnick gone, a note left on his pillow.
Got called into training early. Didnât want to disturb you. Iâll see you at lunch.
Love,
Your fake husband
Why was he in training so early? He said yesterday that his training wouldnât start till after breakfast.
Maybe he was upset by what happened last night. Maybe he didnât enjoy it.
You let your thoughts consume you as you lay in bed, completely skipping breakfast and most of your morning schedule.
A knock on your door pulls you from your thoughts.
âCome in,â you sigh to whoever was waiting. Youâre surprised to see Boggs enter.
âMiss Y/L/N, do I need to remind you that you have a schedule to follow?â he asks.
âNo,â you yawn. âIâm sorry I lost track of time. What time is it anyways?â
â10:34 AM,â Boggs states. âIâve been instructed to escort you to your doctorâs checkup, which you are very late to.â
Boggs gives you a minute to dress before heâs escorting you to the hospital. He says Coin isnât happy that you are already disregarding your schedule and is rethinking your living arrangement.
Prim performs your checkup that morning. She clears you for the day and you make your way to the cafeteria to help with lunch prep.
11:30 rolls around and you finally have a chance to see Finnick. Twelve hours felt too long and you were anxious to face him again. He was sometimes hard to read.
âHey love,â he says as you sit down next to him with your tray. âHow was your morning?â
âMeh,â you shrug. âI got reprimanded by Boggs for not following my schedule. I guess that was a serious rule.â
âSorry about this morning,â Finnick states. âI would have woken you up when they buzzed for me but you look like you needed the sleep.â
âThatâs ok,â you sigh, thinking about how sad you were that he wasnât there when you woke. âWhy did they increase your training?â
âKatniss snuck onto a transport that left late last night for District 2,â he explains. âTheyâre moving up our deployment timeline.â
âDeployment?â you ask, setting your fork down. âYou didnât tell me they were sending you anywhere.â
âCan we talk about this tonight?â he replies.
âIâm not hungry,â you state, abruptly standing with your tray. Finnick calls out for you as you walk away, needing to escape for a bit.
You end up back at the hospital to talk to Prim.
âCould I get an excuse for the rest of the day?â you ask her. âIâm not feeling well.â
âOh no! Do you need medicine? Whatâs not feeling well?â she asks.
âIâve just had a bad day thatâs all,â you shake your head. âI canât mentally handle a schedule today.â
âWhy donât you go chat with Dr. Aurelius for a bit,â Prim suggests. âHeâs available now if you want to see him.â
You had never been in therapy before. Dr. Aurelius seemed nice but you didnât know if you could trust him. What do therapists even do?
âNice to meet you Miss Y/L/N,â the man states as he enter the room. âIâm Dr. Aurelius. Why donât we start with how youâre feeling today?â
âSad,â you reply, unsure of how to properly convey your emotions.
âDo you know why you feel sad?â he asks. âOr what made you feel this way?â
âDistrict 13 makes me sad,â you state as the man writes something down in his notebook. âI have no autonomy here.â
âThey allowed you to get married,â he remarks. âAre you happy about that?â
âMeh,â you shrug. âI mean I love Finnick but it was a fake wedding for a propo that we agreed to do so we could be roommates here in 13. Heâs lived with me for 5 years now. I skipped my schedule this morning and Coin is already threatening to make us live separately again.â
âI see,â the man comments. âDo you find schedules restricting?â
âI guess I do,â you respond. âI mean Iâve spent my whole adult life on house arrest so Iâve never really been able to make decisions for myself. Having a schedule feels like someone is telling me what to do all the time.â
âThatâs understandable,â he comments. âI can excuse you from your schedule for today but you will need to find a compromise with President Coin. I will provide you with a list of options for your schedule so you can maybe pick out what you want to do. I apologize that the list is limited but itâs the best I can do.â
You take the list and agree to meet with him and Coin in the morning to discuss your schedule. In the mean time he gives you a âmentally unstableâ bracelet to excuse you for the rest of the day.
The list seems meh. You had no interest in learning about nuclear weapons or the history of Panem, and cafeteria duty wasnât necessarily your favorite.
Reflection time rolled around and Finnick enters your shared cabin.
âYou skipped dinner,â he comments as he throws you an apple. You reluctantly take it and eat a bit to ease his worry.
âYou skipped out on telling me about deployment,â you mutter.
âIâm sorry,â he sighs as he moves to sit next to you. âI just didnât feel like there was a good time to tell you. I was going to tell you before the wedding but you had your breakdown and I didnât want to worry you.â
âWhere are they sending you?â you ask.
âThe capital,â he responds. At this answer you burst into tears.
âYou canât leave me,â you sob. Finnick wishes he could pull you into a hug but he knows better than to touch you when youâre upset.
âIt will only be for two weeks,â he states. âThree at most.â
âWhat if you donât come back?â you hiccup.
âIâll always come back for you,â he replies.

Ch1 ~ Ch 2 ~ Ch 3 ~ Ch 4 ~ Ch 5 ~ Ch 6 ~ Ch 7 ~ Ch 8 ~ Ch 9 ~ Ch 10 ~ Ch 11
The call came late on a Saturday night during the first full week of September. Busy getting ready to go out for a later-than-usual date, you had jumped straight up in the air when your phone started ringing. The words 'labor' and 'hospital' got you and Marcus moving instantly, and you were off to meet Juan and Sydney at Sibley Memorial Hospital faster than a heartbeat.
âNow, itâs gonna be awhile.â Marcus warns you, even as he speeds towards the hospital. âI might have to come back to get you some clothes.â
"As long as it doesn't take as long as Junie did to be born," you joke, trying to dispel your own tensions even as you fidget in your seat. "Mom was in labor for twenty-six hours. I think Syd will just reach in and pull the baby out before she waits that long."
âSheâll be yelling that she has a dinner menu to put out.â Marcus snorts, understanding how frustrated Juan has been when his wife refused to slow down until the very end.
"If she doesn't have her recipe notebook out within an hour of giving birth, I'll be astonished." She never slows down, your best friend, and you adore her despite it being worrying sometimes. At least you got her to agree to the more-than-generous New Parent Leave package the inn has adopted. They're both technically on your payroll so you know they'll be well taken care of.
âThe new sous chef she hired to help the old one step into her shoes has worked out really well so far.â Marcus knows that talking about the inn will help you focus. Keep you from worrying yourself up into a state until you can lay your eyes on Sydney.
"She needed another set of hands anyway." Just because you know what he's doing doesn't mean you're not grateful, and you fidget in your seat before glancing down at your phone for the thousandth time. No new texts. You just have to remind yourself that that is a good thing. "Hopefully this new guy will work out and she'll keep him on long term."
âYeah, itâs nearly a fully house every night in the restaurant.â Business in the inn might have taken a slight hit from the negative press, but the food was still bringing in the locals.
"Thank god for that." Over the last few months your bookings haven't been too stellar, but you've been making up for it with restaurant patrons and special event bookings. At least you had room enough to accommodate Marcus's parents when they came up in July. "I don't want to think about what would have happened if we'd lost restaurant sales along with bookings."
âIâm just happy that the âanonymous sourcesâ have tapered off lately.â The accusations are still out there but you and Marcus have been laying low for now.
âWhat I wouldnât give for two seconds with our sniveling exes.â Itâs obvious that it has been Sam and Vanessa feeding things to the gossip columnists, although technically all you have is your say-so. Theyâre being clever enough to make sure that there is no paper trail and nothing being said that marks them as the obvious source of the negative rumors. âWhy do we have to be the better people?â You gripe with a pout. âWe could just as easily say made up shit about them. For all we know, they were the ones having an affair and this is a whole situation of they doth protest too much.â
âI donât think so.â Marcus would love for that to be the case. âThat week of the state dinner, he was sick.â He reminds you. âI think Vanessa went over to his house and somehow discovered sheâs his soulmate. She told me that she had just found out, not that she just met him.â He theorizes. âAnd now, they are twisting their own narrative, but I donât understand why.â
âIf theyâre trying to discredit Mom through me, itâs not working.â Though your business may have taken a hit, your motherâs first term has been fairly impressive so far. Sheâs getting her legislation moving at a brisk clip and her focus on the economy is already strong. You sigh, though, pushing out the bad thoughts, and squeeze his hand over the gear shift. âThey donât get to ruin our goddaughterâs birth. Thatâs not in the cards.â
âNope.â Marcus made sure to pack the gifts for mother and baby in the car while you were rushing around to get dressed. Both of you are excited. âDoesnât matter, today is about Sydney and the baby.â He chuckles. âAnd poor Juan too. I know heâs a wreck right now.â
âHeâs so excited and so nervous.â The clock on the dashboard reads ten minutes until midnight and you squeeze his hand again to relieve some of your own nerves. Itâs not like youâre the one having a baby. Thereâs no reason to be nervous, but you are. For your best friend and your goddaughter and for Juan who is like a big brother to you.
âYes he is.â Marcus tosses you a grin. âI know heâs supposed to be handing out cigars, but I managed to get my hands on a box of very nice ones. When the baby is born, Iâm going to give them to him. To celebrate the important milestones with.â
âTheyâre the ones your dad smokes, arenât they?â Beaming that grin right back at him, the conjured memory of the vanilla and spice scent of Matthew Pikeâs favorite cigars is easy to conjure. âHeâll love that.â
âI hope so.â Marcus grins. âI can just imagine how proud heâs going to be. Heâs going to be crying as he holds his child for the first time.â
âHeâs going to be a leaky faucet by the time we get to the hospital,â you predict with an affection laugh. âThey deserve this. They already love that little girl so much and theyâre going to be amazing parents.â
âYes they are.â He canât help but be a little envious, although itâs not a sharp feeling because he knows it will happen for the two of you soon enough. He will be content with cuddling his new goddaughter.
Thereâs little traffic at this time of night, and before you know it you and Marcus are parking and heading inside to track down the room number that Juan texted to you. Sydney and Juanâs families will be alerted when the baby is born, but it was their wish to have you and Marcus in hand for the birth. Youâll be right there in the delivery room with Syd and Juan while Marcus keeps the families updated in a group chat. Youâre co-captains of Team Moral Support and youâre excited for every second of it.
His hand is on your back as you stop in front of the door. âAre you ready, sweetheart?â He asks with a beaming smile.
âNervous. Excited. Very ready.â You lean back to steal a kiss, warmed through by the comfort of having him by your side for this enormous step in the lives of your close friends. Your chosen family. âAndâŚI canât wait until itâs us.â
âSoon enough.â He promises. âSoon enough.â He pushed the door open and knocks with the back of his knuckles. âKnock, knock.â
âOh thank god!â Comes the response from inside, and youâre laughing at the relief in Sydneyâs voice when you and Marcus push inside. âThe Godparent Brigade has arrived! Here to pump you up, handle your relatives, and fetch your sushi after the little peanut has arrived on the scene.â
âGet the sushi before anything else.â Sydney demands, rubbing her stomach and nearly salivating at the thought.
"I've already got your order in my phone, and Marcus will jet out to get it. You won't have to wait at all, honey." It doesn't surprise you in the least that Syd is thinking about one of her favorite foods, but you move over to her side in the bed as the two men hug and give your best friend a squeeze on her shoulder. "How are you doing? Do you want me to go strong arm a nurse for some ice chips?"
âJuan already has two cups of them, letting them melt down.â She grins at you and then winces when another contraction hits.
It takes everything you've got not to wince or cringe along with her, knowing that it won't do a single lick of good and won't help her feel any better. "How far apart are they?" You ask instead, rubbing her back in small, soothing circles.
âTwelve minutes, forty-seven seconds.â Juan tells you as he looks down at his watch and then back at his wife. âWe are down from fifteen minutes.â
"Getting closer and closer!" Practically squeaking with excitement, you can see the same light in Juan's eyes despite the worry lines in his furrowed brow. He just wants everything to go well, and you can't blame him there.
Sydney huffs out a small laugh, knowing you are doing exactly what she had wanted you to. Cheerlead for her. âDid you happen to bring those hard candies?â She asks, her eyes wide and pleading.
"Yes!" Ready to dig into your purse immediately, you swirl around and grab your bag from where you had dropped it to one side when you came in the room. "I've got sour lemon and orange, and I've got the sweet strawberry ones. What are you feeling at the moment?"
âSweet.â She practically moans the word and reaches out to you with grabby hands. âDonât hold out on me now.â
"Here we go, babe." One of the candies is deposited in Syd's outstretched hands and a few more get tucked into the pockets of your cardigan to make sure you have one on hand for her at no more than a moment's notice. "Plenty more where that came from, I promise."
âYou are the best.â She moans, popping the candy into her mouth and rolling her eyes in pleasure.
"Now how are you doing, Dad?" With Syd moaning over her small treat, you turn your attention to Juan.
âIâm hanging in there, but I think I forgot my bag.â He rolls his eyes and huffs. âToo busy making sure the car seat was secure.â
"Babe, you have a key to their place, right?" If not, you'll pull out your keys and send Marcus back to Alexandria with your spare house key instead. You would go yourself, but you vowed not to leave Sydney's side once you got to the hospital. The kind of vow that is definitely life or death and she will hold you to.
âJuan gave me one.â Marcus nods, and agrees with your silent plan. âIâll run and get the bag. Pick up some coffee thatâs better than the shit they serve here, yeah?â
"I have a feeling we're going to need it." Juan nods and claps Marcus on the shoulder gratefully.
"I'll call you if anything changes," you promise him, turning back to your own soulmate. "You're amazing, sweetheart. Thank you."
âIâll be back as soon as I can.â He reassures you, leaning in to kiss your lips before hugging Juan and bussing Sydneyâs cheek. âAsk for the good drugs, mama.â He teases with a wink, wanting her to laugh.
"You bet your ass!" She groans, wincing more heavily with this contraction than she had with the one before. "Get back here fast, Marcus. Speed. Lots!"
âIâll use my badge if I get pulled over!â He calls back as he rushes out of the room.
"He'll be back in no time." Realistically you know it will take quite a lot of time, in fact, but your job tonight is not to be realistic. It is to be positive and upbeat. To keep spirits high. "I think Malachi is going to win the betting pool." You grin and stand up by the head of the bed with Sydney, right there to hold her hand if she needs you. "He had Monday â tomorrow, technically â as the day, but I don't think anyone had Sunday."
âJuanâŚâ Sydney smiles. âTake a nap, baby. I know you are exhausted. You were about to go to sleep when my labor started. Birdie is here, so get some sleep.â
He raises an eyebrow, knowing his wife is in pain, but also knowing that a short nap will ensure he is at his best to help her. "We'll take shifts," he compromises, eyeing you just as much as his wife. "So someone is always here holding your hand and timing your contractions. Short naps only. I don't want to miss anything."
âI promise I wonât push her out without you.â She teases, leaning in and pressing her lips to his. âGo, it might be your last nap for the next eighteen years.â
"I love you, Warrior Queen." There are more kisses and more sweet words, and finally Juan crosses the compact hospital room to curl up on the Dad Bench and try to get at least a little bit of sleep before his baby girl enters the world.
âI donât want to be horrible through this.â She admits quietly. âIâm hoping the labor progresses so I get an epidural quickly.â
"There is not a single person who is going to even blink an eye if you are upset during this labor," you promise her. She pats the side of her bed and you perch on the edge of the mattress, holding her hand all the while. "If you wanted or needed to rage through the whole thing, we would stand by your right to do so. But we'll also stand by your choice to do things any other way. Whatever way is going to be the best possible experience of bringing your first baby into this world."
âWill you do me a favor?â She asks quietly, eyeing Juan as he turns into the couch and gives you his back. Heâs already snoring lightly so sheâs not worried about him overheating. âIf something happensâŚ..â This is the first time that sheâs ever said anything out loud and her eyes are anxious. âIâve signed the paperwork already, but if something happens, I donât want to stay on machines.â She whispers. âPromise me that youâll help him let go. And if itâs me or the babyâŚyou know what I want you to choose.â
âNothing is going to happen.â As firmly and sternly as you can, you squeeze your best friendâs fingers in yours and bite back the instant tears that spring but behind your eyes. The fact that this conversation is even necessary is heartbreaking, but women die in childbirth every single day. Nothing is going to happen. You almost shake with determination but that isnât what she needs right now. The person who means the most to you in the world besides Marcus is looking you in the face and asking you to be loyal to her. And you will. âI promise.â Two small, devastating words. But if sheâs thought this far ahead, sheâs also had another thought. âYou have a will somewhere?â
âIn the safe at home.â She nods, relieved that you are not fighting her and itâs obvious on her face. She had expected an argument, she knows she would have gotten one from Juan, which is why she chose you as her medical POA. âThe papers are in an envelope in my bag.â She nods towards the incredibly organized hospital bag.
âOkay.â You nod, still holding her hands tightly. âI love you. I will honor your wishes. Now tell me which onesies you packed to bring her home in so you can get excited again.â
âAll of them.â Sydney snorts, only half kidding. âThere are twelve that I couldnât decide between, so I brought them all. Figured we would decide which one looks best when we are holding her.â
âWe can absolutely decide later.â Sheâs already a little sweaty at the top of her forehead from the contractions and you nudge a cup of melted ice chips toward her just to cool her down. âDo you have a top three?â
âThe ones in the right hand pocket.â She takes the cup and starts to gulp down the cool water.
In the right hand pocket of Sydneyâs neatly packed hospital bag, three folded baby onesies await their new owner: one from her mother in law covered in little surfboards and ocean waves and sunglasses to represent how much Juan had loved surfing when he was out in California. One from Sydâs sister AnnaLeigh with Once Upon a TimeâŚa Heroine was Born written out like the beginning of an illuminated fairytale, and one from you and Marcus emblazoned with the logo of Sydâs favourite hockey team to get her baby girl started out right. âTheyâre fantastic choices,â you hum, looking at the clothes with misty eyes.
âYou see why I couldnât choose?â She laughs, shaking her head and setting down the rest of the ice chips to melt. Seriously not understanding why they just wouldnât give her water. Labor is fucking thirsty work.
âI think I like AnnaLeighâs,â you admit, before tucking them back into the bag as carefully as they had been before. âBut weâll see how she feels about them when sheâs here. Who knows? She might come out the chillest baby in the world and then we now she matches Juanitoâs surfer phase.â
âJuan actually likes that one too.â She admits with a grin. âHeâs so fucking excited for this baby to come. He swears if he could carry her for me, he would.â
âHe totally would have if he could.â The grin on your face breaks wider, and you sit back on the edge of Sydâs bed with her. âSo would Marcus. In a heartbeat.â
âHow did we get so fucking lucky?â Her eyes mist up, overwhelmed with the beautiful thought of both of you so happy and cared for with your soulmates.
âI truly have no idea.â The mist in her eyes halts for just a moment as another contraction hits, but it doesnât fade. It doesnât dim. Sydâs happiness is true, and youâre so grateful to see it. âThank god they get along though. Weâd be screwed if our soulmates werenât friends.â
Panting, she leans back and rubs her belly. âWe would make them be friends.â She jokes. âThe most awkward small talk over beers until they find a common interest.â
âLucky for us?â You sit forward and help her readjust her pillows from where they had fallen out of place. âTheyâre basically as inseparable as we are again.â
"Lucky for us." She agrees, leaning back with a sigh and smiling at you. "Thanks. You know what I need before I do sometimes."
âFor most of the time weâve known each other, Iâve been shocked that we arenât soulmates.â At some point in your teenage years you had discussed it, but your appendicitis scar already existed and she has never born that. âI gotta be honest, I used to be bummed that weâre not. But when you met Juan, I understood why.â
She kisses the air in your direction. "Because you had Marcus waiting on you, too." She reminds you. "We are better than soulmates. We are sisters by choice."
âI would have waited forever for him.â She gets the same air kiss from you, and you descend into giggles together. âWe really are lucky.â
The giggles are interrupted by another contraction, making Sydney hiss and squeeze her eyes shut as she tries to breathe through it. Coming out as more of a whine until the pain passes again. "They- They are getting closer." She huffs when she can talk again.
âWeâre down to eight minutes and sixteen seconds apart,â you tell her, checking your watch. âYouâre doing awesome, Syd.â
âI canât believe it.â She grunts when she gets a foot in her rib. âI donât know whether to be impressed that itâs going so fast, or cry because Iâm not further along.â
"You're allowed to be both, you know." Frankly, you're both. She is progressing quickly but you know she would rather have just arrived fully dilated and ready to go. "Just remember. At least she's not dragging her heels like Junie did."
âI donât know how your mom did it.â She huffs, thinking about your mother and how excited you had been for a younger sister. âShe was still working while in labor.â
"My mother is some kind of weird combination of feral cryptid being and absolute machine," you chuckle, shaking your head. "If I'm trying to do bookings and make staff schedules during labor, please slap me."
Huffing out a laugh, she grunts and rubs her belly again on the side. âDone.â She pants. âBut get me my notebook.â She points to her bag. âI just thought about a salted Carmel mocha crème brĂťlĂŠe.â
âI am only agreeing to this because it will take your mind off the pain.â Still, you dig into the pocket opposite the onesies she has earmarked as favorites and come out with her battered and beaten recipe notebook. âIt sounds like it will be nice to send to your sous chef.â
âIt sounds like something I want to eat right now.â She groans, flipping open the tatty cover and laying it on her baby bump to quickly write down her idea.
âYouâre going to be a little distracted and busy for a while,â you remind her. Still you canât help but grin at her tongue poking out from between her teeth as she scribbles.
âDoesnât mean Iâm not hungry.â She moans pitifully after finishing the notes. âI was in the middle of getting a snack.â The pout that pushes her lips out would be comical under different circumstances but sheâs horribly disappointed to have not gotten to eat before being bustled into the car by her frazzled husband.
âWhat was snack time tonight?â It is absolutely always the way to distract her when sheâs feeling bad, and tonight is All Sydney All the Time, so youâre focused in one her.
She groans and whimpers slightly at the food she had to leave on the counter. âCottage cheese with fresh peach compote and balsamic glaze.â She pouts even more. âIt was going to be amazing. But I had to tell Juan that I was cramping.â
âIâll make sure thereâs plenty in your fridge waiting for you when you get home.â You can promise her that, along with their fridge and freezer being fully stocked with ready-made meals and easy to use ingredients that should last more than two weeks. Between you and Marcus and Malachi and her staff, youâve all been secretly helping prep for babyâs arrival for a week already. Even Agent Bailey made a contribution to the frozen meals and added some veggies from her garden.
âThank you.â She smiles you softly. âI canât believe that when I leave, Iâm going to be holding her.â She admits with a grin.
âSheâs almost here.â As if to affirm it, another swift kick to Sydneyâs abdomen is brutally obvious, and you grin. âAnd sheâs excited about it.â
The two of you settle into a comfortable silence. Broken by contractions and the quickening of their pace. Sydney trying to be quiet as she pants through them to let Juan sleep.
Checking your watch again and finding nearly two hours have gone by, you tilt your head at your best friend and hand her another strawberry candy. "Marcus should be back soon, and your contractions are barely more than five minutes apart now. I think it's time to wake Dad up and call for the nurse."
Marcus has Juanâs bag in the backseat and he had cancelled the reservations he had made for tonight. They arenât going to be used, and he had apologized profusely. Still, he stops at the inn to run up to the small gun safe, using the biometric lock to open it and reveal a small ring box. He had been planning to propose tonight, and he still can, it will just look different now.
"It's happening, isn't it?" On his one night shift per week, Malachi had seen you and Marcus hustle out the backdoor of the inn with bags in hand and seen not long after when Marcus reappeared in a hurry. Now he is waiting at the back door once again, but this time to snag Marcus before he can disappear in to the night.
âIt is.â Marcus nods with a huge grin spreading across his face. âJuan forgot his bag. Iâll text you when sheâs born.â All the staff are invested so he will be sure to let them know. âYouâve got the inn?â He checks, although he knows what the other man will say.
"That baby is your godchild." Malachi smiles surprisingly softly. "This inn is mine."
âI know.â He reaches out and squeezes Malachiâs arm. âBirdie trusts you with her most important treasure.â He praises.
"Not quite." He winks at the other man, considering him a friend now after many months of back and forth, and grins. "She'd never leave me alone with you."
Marcus snorts, well aware of the manâs proclivity to flirt. He matches that grin. âThatâs because she knows how persuasive you are.â He jokes, winking at him playfully. âBesides. You are still yearning for your soulmate and will only be happy when he breezes into your life like heâs always been there.â
"Check all those doctors for my ankle tat, handsome." Malachi teases, shooing Marcus toward the door. "A man in scrubs is better than a man in uniform."
âI will.â He gives Malachi a salute and hustles out of the door to speed back to the hospital as quickly as he can.
It's on the heels of a nurse when Marcus comes back into the room, with Juan standing at Syd's side holding tight to your hand while you have been banished to the corner of the room so the nurse can do her work. "It's almost time!" You tell him excitedly, wrapping your arms around him the second he makes his way over to her.
âHoly shit, I made it just in time then.â He canât believe how fast itâs gone, he had expects at least half a day or more of labor.
"Apparently Constance does not want to wait." The shine of tears in your eyes isn't going anywhere now that you're about to head to the delivery room with Sydney and Juan, but you hug Marcus fiercely. "And I can't wait to meet her. I'm so glad you made it in time."
âMe too.â Marcus presses his lips to yours, letting you cling to him for a second before you pull back. âDoes she want me there for Juan or should I stay here?â
"Stay here and hold down the fort for us? She's going to be exhausted when it's all over but she's nervous about everything being okay in the room while we're gone." Wishing so dearly that this was your night only makes you smile because you know that it's only a matter of time.
âAbsolutely.â Marcus nods and looks over at Juan and Sydney. âIâve got everything here. You go meet your daughter.â
"We'll be back soon." Juan is beaming, practically hopping around, and looks like he might jump out of his own skin if given the chance. "She's almost here!"
Marcus laughs at the bubbly excitement, watching as the nurses wheel her bed out, with you and Juan right on their heels as sheâs transferred over to the delivery room. âAnd nowâŚâ Marcus pulls out the ring box and flicks it open to look down at the gorgeous ring. âWe wait.â
It's over an hour before anyone comes back into the room, and when it happens it's just you alone with a look of exhausted panic on your face. "Everyone's okay." The first words out of your mouth, but you murmur them while shaking slightly and bolting into his arms, so it isn't terribly reassuring.
That doesnât sound reassuring, coupled with the desperate way you cling to him. Marcus folds you into his embrace tightly.
âShe was breechâŚâ Sniffling through the explanation and clinging to him even harder is about the best you can do right now. âAnd they couldnât get her to turn. Thenâthen they did an ultrasound and figured out thatââ The shudder that runs through you is all-encompassing. âShe had her umbilical cord around her neck. So they had to do an emergency c-section.â The shaky breath you exhale as you lean back is enough to make him quake right along with you, but he holds you steady. âAnd then the placenta ruptured after they brought the baby out andâand Syd just kept bleedingââ
âOh shit.â Marcus whispers in horror, his heart plummeting to his feet and he swallows harshly. âBut they are both okay?â He had heard you say they were, but he needs the confirmation.
âTheyâre both okay.â You can barely manage to nod, tears spilling over for yet another time. âThey took Constance to the NICU and Juan is with Syd in recovery until they okay her to come back here.â
âThank God.â Marcus breathes out softly. âHopefully Syd is asleep? I know she would be frantic if Constance isnât with her after that.â
âAwake, but exhausted.â Youâre still gripping his leather jacket, refusing to let go. It had been warding off the chill in the air conditioned room but now itâs your life line. âThey let her hold the baby for a few minutes before they whisked her off to the NICU.â
âHow is she?â Marcus asks quietly, worrying about the baby. âCould we sit with her in the NICU?â
âThe doctor said not to worry.â Though you sniffle again, clearly very concerned. âThat sheâs seen babies in far worse condition come through it totally fine. But they wanted her in a place where they can help immediately if they need to.â Two tears leak from your eyes but you brush them away with the back of your wrist and try to breathe. âTheyâll come down and tell us in a little while if she can come be with Sydney or if weâll be allowed to visit the NICU. For now we just gottaâwe gotta stay put. Thatâs why Juan wanted me to come tell you.â
âThen that is what we will do.â Marcus promises, rubbing your back gently. âIâll wait to pick up her sushi, hmm?â He wants you to decide that is the best option because heâs not leaving you right now. Not for anything in the world. Heâs already reached out to his team to let them know heâs out of pocket for right now.
âUntil after she gets some sleep.â You nod against his chest and wrap your arms around his waist for a sturdy anchor. âThis isâŚnot a celebrating time. The only thing worth celebrating is the fact that theyâre okay.â
The ring he had planned to give you tonight burns a hole in his pocket, but he hums in agreement, pressing his lips to your head. âI completely agree.â He murmurs softly. âWe will just make sure that they are in perfect health.â
âI love you so much.â The sheer relief of having him in your arms now after nearly losing your best friend â both of them meaning more to you than life itself â is unspeakable. âAnd Iâm so glad youâre here.â
âIâm not going anywhere.â He promises. âI think Iâm going to text the group that mom and baby are resting comfortably and we will make the announcement later?â He asks. âI donât want people to bug Juan or worry.â
âI think thatâs probably a good idea.â The last that the baby arrival group chat had heard, Syd was being wheeled to the delivery room. They deserved an update.
âWhy donât you go into the bathroom and wash your face, sweetheart?â Marcus urges. âChange into your comfy clothes and Iâll send out a text.â
âIâm too anxious to sleep, but Iâll wash up and change.â It seems like it will make you feel less frazzled, and therefore more on your game to help your friends. âBut if you need to lie down, you should. Iâll wake you up when the nurse comes in with news.â
âI wonât sleep.â Marcus is too focused on you, too in tune with your nervousness to ever nap. Not right now.
âThen change with me and settle in,â you suggest instead, knowing that if your positions were switched you would feel the same. âIt might be a long night.â
Marcus nods. âI can do that.â He promises, rubbing your shoulders and moving towards the bags. âIf you want to take a quick shower, no one would blame you.â
âI think Iâll save that trick for refreshing myself in a few hours from now.â Predicting that youâll need it, you kiss him now and slip off to the adjacent bathroom with your overnight bag to change.
Marcus pulls out his phone and calls down to the florist department that is on the ground floor of the hospital, wanting Sydney to come back to a lovely bouquet.
Wash your face. Change your clothes. Try not to break out crying again that you almost had to put that conversation with Syd a few hours ago into action. By the time you come out of the bathroom in Marcusâs old FBI Academy sweatshirt and a pair of yoga pants, your shoulders are drooping and your feet are dragging but at least youâve stopped crying.
âOh sweetheart.â While you had washed your face, Marcus had changed out in the room. âCome lay down with me on the sofa/bench thing.â He urges, reaching for you again.
âThe Dad Bench.â Curling up into his side immediately, you lay your head on his shoulder and breathe out another sigh. âAfter you left, she made me promise to make the decision if something went wrong,â you tell him quietly. âJuan would never be able toâŚand she knewâŚthat if she made me promise. Iâd do what she wanted.â
He had been stroking your arm, fingers freezing as he absorbs the implication of that statement. âIâm glad it didnât come to that.â He closes his eyes and sends up a prayer of thanks and continued good health to whomever might hear him. He doesnât wish that on anyone, least of all his soulmate and one of his best friends.
"It almost did." Tears come again, fresh and few, but they are definitely there. "The only other time I've heard Juan pray in Spanish was when his mother had a heart attack a few years ago."
âI would be praying in every fucking language I could if it were you.â Marcus whispers. âTo every God ever imagined.â
"Everyone is okay." Having to remind yourself of it fairly often seems...fairly reasonable, all things considered. You had stood at your best friend's side and looked her and her soulmate in the eyes as the doctors worked to control her bleeding. As she lay on a table with the distinct reality that those would be the last moments of her life.
But no. Everyone is okay. And soon they'll send her downstairs so she can rest comfortably, and they'll bring little Constance to her to have joyous moments with her family instead of fearful ones.
âEveryone is okay.â He echoes softly. âButâŚI asked the nurse for a rollaway bed for you.â The nurse had slipped into the room to check on you while you had been in the bathroom, before he had changed. You had just walked into the other room and closed the door, in fact. He had thought it would be best to prepare for you to not leave this room anytime soon.
"Did she say anything else?" No news is good news most of the time when you're in a hospital, but if Marcus got to speak to a nurse you want to know everything.
âShe said that momma and baby should be in here by the time visitor hours start.â He couldnât get a timeframe beyond that, but he took what he could get.
"That's..." Turning your wrist to check your face, the dial reads just after four in the morning. "That's about four hours. And I know Juan won't be down without them. So...I guess we should settle in?"
âOf course.â He doesnât move, just continuing to hold you. Feeling you relax against him slowly.
"I guess...rain check on date night sex?" You huff weakly, trying for a joke. By this time of night on a date night you would normally be fast asleep â and very naked â in each other's arms.
âA rain check with you is better than any legal tender.â He jokes back, smiling softly even though he had hoped it would be engaged sex.
"What a night." The longer that you sit with him, the calmer you get. It's such an enormous thing for you, to have someone to anchor you as well as he does, and you sigh again as you deflate just a little more into his side.
âNot exactly how I imagined the night going.â Marcus admits with a small sigh. Heâs not unhappy, he just wishes the birth hadnât been so traumatic for everyone.
"Tell me what we were going to do tonight." Thinking about absolutely anything else seems like a very good idea right now, and while you know it was already late when you were leaving the apartment, you also know that Marcus had made plans for tonight.
âI had booked us a late table at Kingbird.â He tells you, smiling at the fact that Sydney had pulled the strings to get the reservation. âIt was supposed to be the last table of the night.â
"The restaurant at the Watergate?" Your eyebrows raise when you look up at him and you're practically pouting. "I've been dying to try that place."
âI know.â He had asked and there was a list of places, but he had chosen that one to immortalize as special for the two of you. âAnd booked us a room at the hotel.â
"Shit." The pout on your lips deepens when you realize how much work Marcus had put into the night, only for it to be interrupted. "I'm so sorry, love. We'll have to reschedule everything. It sounds like it would have been beautiful."
âThis is more important.â Marcus insists. âDonât apologize. This is where I want to be, with you.â
"I don't think I could make it through tonight without you." It would be too much to handle on your own. With such deep emotions entangled in every second of the night, without your anchor you might have just flown apart. "I don't like the idea of doing anything without you anymore."
âYou would have, sweetheart.â Marcus knows that, you are so damn strong. So much stronger than you ever believe about yourself. âI know you would have, but you donât have to.â He stresses. âIâll be here for you. Support you, comfort you. Celebrate your success and mourn your losses with you. Iâm right here.â
"There are no losses to mourn tonight." And you'll be thanking every deity out there for any part they may have had in it. And also making sure that you note down the name of Sydney's doctor for your own pregnancies, because that woman worked quickly and thoroughly and without hesitation to make sure that both mother and baby made it through a birth that would have killed them both in decades past.
âWe celebrate life.â He agrees softly. âAnd love. That little girl is loved so much already.â
"She's beautiful." And of course, there's a sniffle again. At least this one is happy and relieved. "Syd's big eyes and Juan's dark hair."
âJuan is going to be miserable when she gets older.â He laughs quietly. âSheâs going to be gorgeous.â
"If she's anything like her mom, she'll have her head too far in the clouds to notice any of the boys or girls chasing her," you laugh along with him, remembering Sydney in high school. "Syd never had any clue how sought after she was."
âShe was waiting for Juan.â Itâs a bit of a romantic stretch, but it could also be the truth. âPlus she was too in love with crème brĂťlĂŠe. No mere man could compare.â
"She was dreaming about a caramel mocha one while you were gone." The maddening fear is starting to subside, finally, and you sink ever more deeply against Marcus on the bench. "I swear I'll make them for her every day for the rest of her life after what happened tonight."
âSee?â He smirks to himself. âShe loves them and Iâll help you. I can take the next week off, help with the inn and let you focus on Sydney and co?â
"You don't have to do that." It's a lot to ask of him, and you know that even though he has plenty of vacation time, you were planning on taking a trip down to Texas to spend New Years with his parents. "It's a deeply appreciated gesture, though."
âI donât mind.â He protests, although he had been certain you would not let him do that for you. âI hope you know that.â
"I know, my love." In his lap, your fingers find his and tangle your hands together. "Why don't we wait on that decision until we see how Sydney and the baby are doing? I don't want you to take extra days out when I know you had been wanting to do other things with them in the next few months."
âAlright.â He will do what you want, let you lead this but he wonât let you exhaust yourself trying to carry everything. âHopefully they will deliver the flowers I ordered before Syd comes back into the room.â
âYou ordered flowers?â Sometimes you really feel like the things he does are magic, from small to large the gestures of love and support are always so deep that it seems impossible for him to not be the Superman of emotional support. âHoney, youâreâyouâre too good. Too all of us.â
Marcus snorts. âMy mother insisted we order flowers from her and dad, before this all went sideways.â He adds. Wanting you to know the context. âBut Sydney just went through a traumatic childbirth. Flowers are the least I could do in order to make her feel loved and special.â He had ordered the flowers his mother wanted and then ordered other arrangements, including a welcome bouquet for Constance herself.
âEveryone is okay.â More reassuring this time, the words still come out in a hush and your eyes drop from Marcusâs for a moment before fluttering back up. âThank you for being you,â you murmur after a moment. Marcus is that supportive and bolstering friend and family member. This is just who he is. And youâre so entirely grateful to have him here with you, especially right now.
âI donât know if I would thank me for that.â Marcus teases, leaning in and kissing your forehead again. âBut you can always count on me, hummingbird.â
âI know I can. And Iâm thankful for that.â More than you could ever say. More than any words you have.
âClose your eyes.â He orders softly. He knows you are exhausted and emotionally spent. You need the rest so you can care for Sydney, Juan and the baby when they are back in this room.
âI canât guarantee Iâll sleep.â Though youâll try, knowing that the nurse doesnât expect Sydney or the baby to be able to come down for at least a few hours.
âI know. Just closing them will be good.â He murmurs softly, still rubbing your back when you shift to lay across him. âYouâve been crying.â
âYou would have been proud of me,â you murmur, settling against him one more time and shutting your eyes. âI kept it together until after everything happened.â It was shock, probably, but you still managed it. âTherapy is going to be a doozy this week.â
âYes it will.â He wonât deny that or try to minimize your feelings. âYou donât need to skip it.â
âIâm absolutely not going to skip it.â Not this week, of all weeks. Not at all. The heaviness of the night is tugging at you, not for sleep but for rest, and for the first time you think you actually might be able to calm down fully as long as you can stay in Marcusâs arms.
Humming in approval, he doesnât speak, letting the silence draw between you and waiting for your breathing to start slowing down.
The nap lasts about two hours. Two hours held tight in Marcusâs arms on that padded bench, and when you shift against him the small sound of noncommittal discomfort and surprise is enough to tell you that he fell asleep too. Good, you think, rubbing the sleep from your eyes. Everyone deserves a reset tonight. Even little Constance.
Marcus wakes quietly, as soon as you move, and he slowly remembers that heâs not in your bed. Both of you are at the hospital. He hums and sighs softly, knowing it hadnât been a long nap, but it will do wonders for the coming hours.
"Hey handsome." The room is quiet and so are you, sitting up to stretch beside him and bring your limbs back to life.
âHow did you sleep?â Marcus asks softly, watching you through heavy eyes.
âBetter than I thought I would,â you admit, though you have a feeling thatâs only because you didnât sleep deeply enough for nightmares to set in. âYou?â
âPretty good nap.â He yawns. âAlthough I know Iâm going to have to get coffee for all of us.â
Checking your watch, you stretch again and knock against his side with a lopsided grin. âThe cafeteria should be open soon. I have a map of the hospital in my bag so you wonât get lost.â
âJust for that, Iâll bring you two coffees.â He groans, standing up and stretching out. âI should get dressed.â
âIâm sure you wouldnât be the only visitor to go get coffee in your jammies.â Far from it, if you had to hazard a guess.
He snorts slightly. âI donât doubt it. But I would hate to steal any of Juanâs new dad thunder.â He jokes, winking at you.
âJuan will be doing everything in bespoke suits with giant buttons that exclaim New Dad! for everyone he meets.â Itâs sweet to think about, now that the fear is mostly past. It wonât wither entirely until you get to see mother and baby, but that should be soon.
âOf course he will.â Marcus laughs. âHeâs already got an app on his phone that is just for organizing pictures of the baby.â
âMake sure you get the name of it,â you tease, leaning over to kiss him and getting one last stretch in â right into his arms. âWeâll need that for our kids, Iâm sure.â
âYou know it.â Marcus grins. âIâve already downloaded it. It also has a wedding portion of the app. Basically you can upload all your important moments in it.â He doesnât mention that he had set it up for the proposal that didnât happen last night.
âYou think of everything.â He really does, so itâs barely even an embellishment. At this point youâre just relieved that you can think of small things again instead of the larger, overhanging fear of just a few hours ago.
âNot everything.â Marcus snorts, winking at you. âOtherwise, I would have had coffee delivered by now.â
âMostly everything, then.â One more kiss and you pull back to get your things sorted out around the room. âIâm going to tidy up a little and get out a couple of comfort things for Syd. So when she comes down sheâll have her favorite cardigan and things like that.â Absolutely anything you can do to soothe your best friendâs hellish night, youâre going to.
âThat sounds perfect.â Marcus agrees. âIâll go grab the coffee. What do you want, sweetheart?â
âJust my usual.â Your hum of appreciation is more relaxed than it would have been earlier in the night. âI love you, baby.â
âI love you too.â He promises as he quickly starts changing into the clothes he had brought.
Marcus is gone for about a half an hour before the door to the room opens again, but when it does it's Juan there â holding the door open wide as one of the overnight workers from the transport department wheels Sydney's bed back into the room with her nurse hot on their heels.
âWe are back.â His tone is exhausted but elated at the same time. Itâs been a sleepless night for him. Afraid that he would close his eyes and Sydney would be gone.
"How are you feeling, honey?" You're at Sydney's side as soon as the nurse is done getting her settled. The woman has the patience of a saint and excuses herself to go retrieve Constance, who is being allowed to leave the NICU.
âTired. Sore.â She admits with a quick, tired smile. âImpatient to hold my daughter.â
"She'll be down soon." Glancing at the door where the nurse has disappeared to bring around that same little girl, the warmth in the room starts to grow exponentially. "Marcus went to get coffees. And I'll bring sushi for lunch. Cross my heart."
âI donât know if Iâm hungry.â Sydney admits with a slight shrug. Sheâs still a little disoriented from the drugs. âBut coffee sounds amazing. I could sleep for days.â
"Then we won't worry about food right now. But Marcus is bringing back coffee for you, and he should be back very soon." You grin at your friends and send them both a conspiratorial shrug. "I sent him with a map, otherwise you know he would have gotten lost."
Juan laughs as he fuses over Sydney, hovering as if she might disappear if he steps too far away. âHe should have been a Lieutenant in the military, as bad as he is.â
âIâve just learned to always have a map for new places or to set up the gps in his car without asking.â Itâs a quirk, and you all have them, but Marcusâs ability to get lost almost anywhere is a standing joke between the four of you and itâs so, so good to hear Syd laugh. Even if itâs only a little, itâs completely worth it.
The knock on the door comes just a moment later and Marcus pokes his head in. âOh youâre here!â He brightens up and pushes the door open, the delivery person from the flower shop hot on his heels. âI was hoping to get all this inside before you did.â
âWe just got back.â Syd is groggy for sure, but not so badly that she doesnât register the tray of coffees and bag of food with the hospitalâs cafe logo on it that you jump forward to snag from him and the delivery of flowers that comes in behind him. With the tension and fear of the last few hours and all the emotions and hormones still raging in her, Sydney is immediately in tears. âYouâyou got flowers?â She half-squalls like itâs the kindest and most loving thing any person has ever done in the history of time. For her, especially right now, it definitely feels like it.
âOhhhh donât cry.â Marcus frets slightly, even though heâs pretty sure that they are happy tears. âI wanted you and Constance to have a beautiful reminder of how loved you both are.â He walks over to the recovering woman, that he now regards as his friend, leaning down to kiss her cheek. âMore are coming too.â He promises.
âItâs so sweet!â Syd huffs between large tears, hugging Marcus as tightly as her recovering body will permit. âYouâre so sweet.â Even after we interrupted your plans, she thinks loudly, but manages not to say it. She knows what last night was supposed to be and she hated having to call when she knew Marcus was about to sweep you out the door.
âYou deserve nothing but happiness right now.â He promises, looking over at Juan and squeezing Sydney gently before he pulls back and moves over to the new father. âCongratulations.â He is somber, aware of what the agony of the night had done to his friend.
âIt was a hell of a night.â Juan pulls Marcus in for a hug â something the two men need right now for grounding, but Juan also murmur, âAnd sorry for the timingâ to Marcus before pulling away.
âDonât ever worry about that.â Marcus insists. âDoesnât matter if I was in the middle of it, we would have been on our way.â Yes, proposing to you and giving you a beautiful moment is important to him; but some things are always much more important and this is at the top of that priority list.
âWeâll make it work.â Juan promises quietly, glad to see you absorbing Sydney in conversation while she marvels at the flowers that Marcus ordered.
âHowâs Constance doing?â Marcus asks quietly, not seeing the bassinet in the room. âWill she be released from the NICU soon?â
âOur doc said sheâs stable, so she can come down and have some family time and be fed.â As a brand new father of only about two and a half hours, that has Juan both puffing out his chest and teary with pride. âThe nurse should be bringing her down now.â
âThatâs great!â Marcus grins, knowing that both mama and daddy will feel better with their newborn daughter in their room.
Having settled Sydney with her coffee and treat â Marcus brought muffins back from the cafe â you excuse yourself to the bathroom and feel like you can finally breathe. Syd is here. You can hear her muffled laughing through the door. And the baby will be down soon. Everyone is okay.
âLooks MarcusâŚâ Sydneyâs voice is hushed and he can tell by her guilty expression what is coming. âPlease, donât apologize again.â He begs her softly. âThere is nothing to apologize for.â
âI can call Kingbird,â she offers immediately. Explain it was my fault you had to cancel and get you a new reservation.â
âNo.â He shakes his head and glances back at the bathroom. âI donât think sheâs going to be leaving your side for quite awhile and I cannot in good conscience try to convince her otherwise.â
He insists that she shouldnât apologize more but Sydney still feels like she ought to, pursing her lips until she eventually tilts her head to look up at the men standing side by side at her bed. âYou could still do it tonight if you wanted to,â she offers. Itâs technically morning now â past six, anyway â but she hasnât gotten any sleep yet so everything blends together. âItâŚâ she blows out a sigh. âI know it wasnât the easiest night.â For her especially. âBut it would be nice to have Constanceâs birth surrounded by happiness. Instead of what might have happened.â
Marcus considers it for a moment, frowning slightly and he bites his lip. âThat isâ are you sure?â He would never want to take away from Constance and her birth.
Sydney sits back in her hospital bed and takes Juanâs hand, letting him anchor her the way you always do with Marcus. âI donât want the only thing I remember about the day my daughter was born to be that both of us almost died,â she admits quietly, knowing itâs a little selfish to ask him for this but also knowing that the happy memories you make together mean everything to the four of you.
He can understand that and he bites his lip. âThenâŚ.what do you think about me proposing here?â He asks. âItâs not the most romantic setting, but I think under the circumstances, itâs the best place to do it.â
âThereâs flowers and best friends and I know you brought her back her favourite muffin.â Juan chuckles, feeling a bit misty eyed over more good things happening. âWhatâs more romantic than that?â
âMaybe we can do something that involves the baby?â Marcus suggests.
âI will squall.â Sydney warns, already tearing up all over again. âBut quickly before she comes backâŚwrap the ring box in the baby blanket?â
âPerfect.â Marcus dives for the bag that had been packed for Constance and finds the soft baby blanket they had decided to wrap her in while in the hospital. âWhen the baby comes in, ask her to get the blanket for you.â Marcus tells Sydney.
âIf we can keep a straight face,â Syd laughs, but agrees immediately.
Marcus hides the ring box in the folds of the blanket. âAre you sure youâre okay with this?â
âMore than.â Sydney promises, right before the bathroom door opens.
You had washed up a little again, refreshing yourself and feeling a little more human while you were in the bathroom. âDid you manage to rest a little while you were upstairs?â Your focus is right back on Sydney but you take a second to give Marcus a kiss of thanks when he hands you your coffee.
âYes.â Sheâs still tired and exhausted, but she smiles. âI did, you donât worry about me.â She huffs, knowing that it wonât do any good. You will fret over her just like Juan will. âLooking forward to sushi later.â
âWeâll have a sushi party and baby girl can get milk drunk like a party animal.â Making the best of what had been a nearly calamitous situation is good for everyoneâs spirits right now. You help the guys set up a little area as a breakfast âtableâ for the three of you and set Sydneyâs things on her tray. Itâs about time for the morning shows that Juan loves so the tv goes on, and seconds later the nurse enters with her bundled up charge yawning as loudly as her little lungs can manage.
âOh my god.â Marcus coos as soon as he sees the little angel in the flesh. She is perfect and nothing will convince him otherwise, falling in love with his goddaughter in a split second. âSheâs so precious.â
âSheâs perfect.â As expected, Sydney and Juan are both in tears all over again, and the nurse who helped Sydney get comfortable upstairs makes sure Mom and Dad have everything they need before bowing out to let the family bond.
âSheâs beyond perfect.â Itâs all you can do not to cry with them, looking at your best friend and goddaughter together.
âIsnât she?â Sydney completely agrees as she finally gets to hold her newborn daughter. Completely in awe of how perfect she is.
The room is practically full of the sound of smiling, whatever that really is, but you end up half-laughing under your breath and looking to Marcus with fresh water behind your eyes. "I want one too," you laugh, overwhelmed with absolute joy and love.
He laughs at your eagerness, the yearning and knows that you are only partially joking. âI donât know if we could top how perfect she is.â He admits with his own chuckle.
"Maybe not." The only possible place for you to be right now is snuggled into his side and you tuck yourself in there to just stare at your goddaughter together. "We can't know until we try, though."
Sydney spares a glance at Marcus, who nods as he holds you close. âWe have to get through a few other things first.â He reminds you.
"I know." You hum when he presses a kiss to the top of your head and sigh again. "I just love her so much and I wanna give her everything. Including playmates."
Sydney coos at Constance and cuddles her closer. âBirdie, would you get me her baby blanket?â She asks softly. âFrom her bag? I want her in the things we picked out.â
"Yeah, of course!" You hop to immediately, slipping out of Marcus's arms to go to the bag Sydney packed. The baby blanket from Sydney's parents is folded near the top. It's a light thing, a beautiful hand knitted piece done in their chosen color of green and then embroidered with the initials CMB for Constance Marie Badillo.
The blanket slips a little in your hand when you pick it up, and when you go to right it a small but weighty something falls out from the center. The realization that it's probably something that Juan tucked away as a surprise for Sydney has you tucking it back inside quickly and handing over the blanket like you're suddenly holding a hot potato.
Sydney hadnât been expecting you to hand over the blanket so fast so she pushes towards you again for a moment. âHold it please.â She requests, knowing you will do anything. She has to give Marcus time to get into position.
"Of course," you agree again, bobbing your head on a nod. Glancing over at Juan makes you wonder if you should do something to help, like opening up the blanket so she can see the little jewelry box or something. Maybe hold it sort of presentationally? You can't quite make up your mind and end up clutching the blanket to your chest in surprise when you hear Marcus clear his throat and whirl around to see him down on one knee in the middle of the little hospital room.
That jewelry box was definitely not for Sydney...
âBefore you panic, I have the happy new parentâs permission.â Marcus promises as he reaches for the hand that is not clutching the blanket protectively. âAnd today is a celebration. Of life, and love.â He tells you softly.
"Oh my god." It's just about all you can think to say as you choke on a fresh round of tears and tighten your fingers in his hand.
âI know.â Marcus flashes you a grin. âSweetheart, there is no one else I want by my side, confiding in, planning for the future and sharing part of my soul with.â He promises you. âI love everything about you and there is not one thing that I could possibly imagine changing. I love your loyalty to friends and family, your work ethic and your tenacity. Your tender heart and your penchant for dreaming.â He takes a big breath, clearly saying your full name. âWill you marry me?â
He can barely finish the question before your thick, cracking voice is chirping endless yeses. Before you're crumpling to your knees to kiss him, cradling the blanket between you as delicately as if the baby was already wrapped in it. "I love you" gets mixed in with all the "Yes!" and more "Oh my god" as if you can't quite believe that it's finally happening. From the moment that the two of you individually became a unit, you've both known that this was the direction you were heading in. But now that you're here? It feels even better than you could ever have guessed.
He knew your answer, heâs known it, but he still giggles in relief and cupping your cheek to kiss you. âI love you.â He promises softly, pecking your lips again and again. He hears both Juan and Sydney sniffling happily and knows this was the right call.
For a moment the room is just happy tears and sniffles and giggling, and youâre both so jittery that you get a little mixed up in retrieving the ring box from deep inside the handmade baby blanket in your arms. Marcus had said he bought your promise and engagement rings together so they would match and of course his decision is perfect â the haloed diamond stands out over heart shaped stones of the promise ring he gave you months ago, and the fact that theyâre from him makes them so perfect you could just fall apart right here in his arm.
âIt was.â He admits with a modest tilt of his head. âBut I think that this might be even better. âYour best friend and goddaughter got to witness it.â
âAnd your best friend too.â No one who ever ran into Marcus and Juan now would think they had spent so many years apart. Theyâre more likely to be mistaken for twins than anything else, and actually had been on a dinner out a few weeks ago.
âIt makes it better than anything else.â He nods in agreement, looking over at your friends. âWe are friends and family.â
âMatron of honor and best man?â Itâs hardly a question, but Marcus has slipped the beautifully shimmering engagement ring onto your finger and you glance back over at your tearful friends with absolute joy. âAnd the tiniest, sweetest, most perfect little flower girl in the whole world?â
âThe perfect flower girl.â Marcus agrees with his own emotional chuckle. âAnd of course they are our matron of honor and best man. What else could they possibly be?â
âYour caterer.â Syd half-complains with a pout, but itâs so half-hearted that she just ends up laughing through the tears. âGet over here and let us hug you two, and meet your goddaughter up close. Obviously weâre going to be whatever you want us to be. All three of us.â
âNot going to happen.â Marcus snorts, shooting Sydney a smile. âYouâre going to participate in the reception. ButâŚâ he shrugs. âWe will let you create our menu.â
âHere we go.â Juan teases, gently taking the baby blanket out of your arms to wrap up his daughter with the already precious heirloom. âBreakfast and wedding planning.â He grins down at Sydney. âIâll get your notebook and take notes. You focus on our angel.â
Marcus laughs because he knows thatâs exactly what will happen. Although there might be a little more cooing over the baby than anything else going on. As it is, he canât wait to get his hands on her.
âI already know what wedding cake you want.â Syd grins, readjusting in her seat so this conversation can include food for everyone, including little Constance. Sheâs already gotten her little girl to latch once without a hellish amount of trouble so sheâs hoping to do it on her own this time.
There has already been plenty of conversation about Sydney breastfeeding, but Marcus busies himself with his bag while she gets her daughter situated. Itâs not because heâs weirded out, just a respect thing, giving the new mother time to get used to being exposed without feeling like sheâs in a fishbowl.
âIâm covered,â Sydney assures him, after a few minutes of fussing where Marcus does anything but look directly at her. His respect level is top notch and she appreciates that about him. âLetâs talk food, please? Andââ Before she can even ask, Juan is handing her a cup of water and she melts and murmurs a quiet âThank you.â
âI just wanted to give you some time.â Marcus joins the small group, sitting down when you stand up and pulling you into his lap while Juan sits on the bed with his wife and child. âSo right off the bat, whatâs your first ideas?â Heâs smart enough to know the final menu will be completely different from the first one.
âAmericana.â You and Sydney grin at each other and you lean back in Marcusâs lap to sip your coffee while you talk. âUpdated versions of classic American dishes.â
âWhat would that look like?â He asks, frowning in confusion. âMeat loaf?â
âCould be.â Sydney nods. âIt could be things like gourmet versions of tv dinners.â
âOr it could be modern versions of older popular dishes,â you nod in agreement. âLike upscale Steak Diane or deconstructed chicken pot pie.â
âFinger foods?â Marcus asks. âIâm sure there will have to be a buffet of canapĂŠs.â
âDepends on the events.â Smiling around a sip of iced coffee, you press a kiss to Marcusâs temple a second later. âIâm thinking four.â
âFour events?â Marcus chuckles. âThatâs bachelorette party, bridal shower, rehearsal dinner and wedding?â
âMaybe five,â you admit with a sheepish grin. âYou said you wanted to have an engagement party.â
âI think that itâs a good place for the publicity your mom wants.â He reminds you.
âFive events is a lot, but if we space them out I think we can manage it.â Looking down at him with an absolute glow on your face, your brand new engagement ring catches the light and makes your chest swell. âWhat season do you want to get married in?â
âAny one you want.â Itâs fair in his mind, heâs been married before and all that matters to him is that you repeat your vows in front of friends and family. What the weather is like doesnât matter a lick to him. âI guess it depends on how fast we can get it planned?â
âDonât do less than six months,â Juan warns. His cousin had rushed things to disastrous consequences.
âI wouldnât.â You can totally agree to that. âMy impulse would be to say a year butâŚIâve kind of always liked the idea of a summer wedding.â Chewing on the idea, you turn your eyes back down to Marcus again. âRoses stop blooming at the end of the summer.â
âEarly fall?â He suggests. âOctober? It gives us seven months. And you will more than likely have White House help.â He shrugs. âAlong with mine, of course.â
âIf we did October, maybe I can do a summer bridal shower in the White House rose garden?â Your eyes widen, practically begging. âI would really love to use the rose garden.â
âThen you better make sure your mom doesnât book it for a tea party.â He teases with a wink, reaching for your hand that now holds his engagement ring. âI think October is perfect. Hell, we could do a Halloween rehearsal dinner.â He jokes.
âDonât even tease me about that,â you huff. A Halloween event would be exactly your style. âHalloween next year is on a Wednesday, otherwise I would be begging you to get married on Halloween.â
âBaby, if thatâs what you wantâŚ.â He shoots Juan a grin and shrugs. âIâm okay with that.â
âI donât want to get married on a Wednesday night.â No one parties deep into a Wednesday night in their thirties. It doesnât feel as special to you. âHow about we get married earlier in October and I talk you into visiting the Paris catacombs with me on Halloween night during our honeymoon?â
âThat works for me just as easily as anything else.â Marcus promises. âOnly thing I care about is you and I celebrating our love and making a public commitment to each other.â
âI love you, too.â If it were just the two of you, you would be getting dressed to run off to a soulmate chapel immediately. But promises have been made and they need to be honored, and every chance to declare your love for Marcus loud and clear is worth taking. âAny Pike family traditions we should keep in mind that I donât know about already?â
Marcus smiles. âThereâs a jewelry set that is passed down to be used in the wedding, if wanted.â He adds. âIt was my great, great grandmotherâs.â
âReally?â Your expression softens immediately, eyes widening a little, and you nod right away. There is no question in your mind that youâre going to wear it. âYour Mom swore to pass down some family recipes after the wedding but she never mentioned heirlooms.â
âItâs only ever offered after the engagement.â He explains. âWe had a certain cousinâs wife - Iâm sure you can guess who - think that it was for her to keep.â
When Sydney and Juan look equal parts amused and confused, you snicker slightly. âHannah has very interesting thoughts about the family,â you tell them, glossing over the few less than kind things Hannah Pike had said either to you or that had been relayed to you. âWhich reminds me. Iâm absolutely going to ask Selena to be a bridesmaid.â
âSydney, you will love her.â Marcus promises. âSheâll be flying out every other weekend to help you plan.â He warns you. âOr just staying out here, she can work from anywhere.â
âSheâs been thinking about moving,â you admit, barely biting back a grin at how much fun it would be to have her nearby permanently. Marcusâs cousin has become one of your closest friends in the months since your first visit to Texas. âShe said she wants to come see what winter is like here to make sure itâs not too bad, but her office is opening a DC branch and asked her if she would be interested in heading up the new team out here.â
âHow do you know that and I donât?â He asks, putting on a faux pout.
âBecause she hasnât told your aunt and uncle yet and she didnât want it to get back to the family.â That grin of yours becomes full force and you kiss his temple again. âShe was trying to save you from having to lie if you got asked.â
âWell, then, you didnât say anything to me.â He mimes zipping his lips and locking them to throw away the key.
"Probably a good policy," you agree, snickering quietly even as you squeeze his shoulders tightly.
Thereâs a sense of lazy content in the room. Everyone slowly savors the baked goods that Marcus had brought and sips their coffee. The baby, Constance, is the noisiest of them all, her hungry sucking and grasping one that makes all the adults smile as they look at her every thirty seconds.
She is Sydneyâs entire focus, and when the baby is done with her own breakfast there is a little fuss over making sure sheâs burped properly before she cuddles up against her motherâs chest to have a post-meal nap. Something that makes Sydney sigh in relief and hold her close. âYouâd never know how bad last night almost was by looking at her.â
âChildren are resilient.â Marcus muses. âShe will never remember her birth and be completely unaffected by it, while it will stay with us forever.â
âAll the better.â Sydney soothes one hand over her sleeping daughterâs back.
Marcus watches the loving gesture, almost aching for the time where he can watch you soothe the children you will have together. Will you look as much like Madonna and Child like Sydney does now? He thinks it will be even more profound like undoubtedly Juan feels like it is.

[for the @calaisreno May Promptosaurus Rex; cw for toddler stuff, eg đŠ & đ¤Ž]

'A-ha! We did it!' John says, possibly too chuffed as he holds up a freshly changed and dressed Rosie. 'We--'
She makes a very distinctive face, then grunts. John eyes her. 'Tell me that face doesn't mean what I think it means.'
Then he does the sniff test, and yes. Yes, it does mean that.
He lays her down yet again, fond exasperation tugging at his lips. 'Wee girl, why do you do this to me?' His mum has used the endearment on Harry their whole lives, so it's comfortable on his tongue as he reaches for wipes and a new nappy -- only to discover the stashes depleted. As in⌠nill.
John rolls several expletives around his teeth. But then Rosie giggle-gurgles up at him, and he swoops in to expel his breath instead on her cheek in the form of a huge raspberry. He almost doesn't hear the knock on the door.
He pauses, but then shrugs and picks her up. 'Sorry, sweetheart. Let's go see who's at the door, yeah?'
She is notably non-nonplussed. 'Livery?'
'Might be,' John replies as he reaches the building door and opens it. 'And it is!' His daughter claps and immediately reaches out for the spotty young man trying to wrestle a rather large box. 'Whoa, there.' John reins her back in; she wants to be friends with everyone, which is both endearing and alarming.
'Do I need to sign?' he says to the carrier, who, now that John's looking, isn't wearing any sort of uniform. He looks like a dishboy haphazardly and temporarily promoted.
'No, sir. I'm to bring it up to the flat.'
A seed of a thought germinates in John's head. 'That was your instruction?'
The lad nods, clearly trying not to show his impatience. John holds back a sigh, and opens the door wider to let him pass. 'By all means.'
And it's as John expected: Wipes, diaper rash cream, and nappies. They're even--though he really shouldn't be surprised--the correct size.
As soon as Rosie's changed (again), he's got his phone out.
'I trust the delivery made it in time?' Mycroft answers.
John spares them both the niceties. 'How?'
'Nothing untoward, I assure you. Sherlock texted me.'
'Right. And where is he?' They may have an⌠evolving relationship, but Sherlock is still Sherlock, and John can also admit he only vaguely remembers what the detective had said when he'd left earlier in the day.
'I believe the words "spleen" and "unidentified poison" are involved.'
'Excellent. Listen.' He clears his throat. 'I'll pay you back.'
'My mother would call that "vulgar," as you know.'
'And she's a lovely woman, but--'
'Discuss it with Sherlock, please. I've got work and must get back to it.'
He rings off. John stares at his phone.
Death by Holmes. That's it. That will be how his life ends.
---
Rosie has broken the laws of physics and/or cloned herself. She has. She must have done.
That's the only explanation for the sheer reach of mess he finds waiting for him after his clinic hours the next day. 'Bloody hell,' he breathes, standing in the flat's doorway and taking it in.
It's more than the usual whirlwind that happens when Sherlock's between cases and takes Rosie for the day - He claims loftily that he's putting her through intellectual paces, but really he just indulges her every whim, including her lack of enthusiasm for cleaning up. And it's not as if the flat was shining and organised to begin with.
John doesn't even have the bandwidth to log all the bits of chaos surrounding him. For heaven's sake, he hadn't even known they owned bubble solution. But, then again, they don't now, judging by the rather large soapy stain on the rug in front of the window, and the family of tipped-over empty bottles next to it.
'John!' he hears from Sherlock's bedroom. 'Come join us!'
He rolls his eyes, but goes anyway. The noises make it clear as to what they're doing, and John hangs his head before pushing open the door. He'd been hoping to at least have one nice mattress in the flat for a bit longer.
But no, currently Sherlock is holding onto an absolutely delighted toddler while, obviously, jumping up and down on the bed like he's seven. Actually, John fleetingly wonders if Sherlock even got to do such things when he was seven--
'Come on, John!'
--and the unabashed joy in Sherlock's eyes tells him his answer. With that, the resistance whooshes out of him. He toes off his shoes and joins them.
'We're testing the durability,' Sherlock explains, loudly, then swoops Rosie like an aeroplane.
John laughs, huffs of air as he jumps and watches his daughter. She seems to be enjoying herself, except-- 'I think she might--' He stops, reaches out. 'Sherlock, she's going to v--'
With a small noise of surprise, Rosie is, indeed, sick. The remnants of whatever they'd had for tea form a lovely puddle on Sherlock's expensive sheets.
The grown-ups both manage to avoid it, scrambling backwards and into each other, somehow. John, lungs tight, reaches for his daughter, not caring that she's got sick all down her front. 'My girl,' he says, going for soothing, knowing her reaction could go either way. 'Did that surprise you?'
Rosie, wide-eyed, lets out a small hiccough. Then her face crumples, and she starts to sob.
'Oh dear,' Sherlock says faintly.
John, because he's a bastard, feels laughter start to bubble up in his lungs.
Then he hears Sherlock repressing chuckles next to him, and the floodgates are open, them laughing together like errant schoolboys.
'We musn't giggle near an ill child!' Sherlock admonishes, but it works no better than it had the week they met. John bumps Sherlock's shoulder and curls Rosie into his chest, rubbing her back and putting his lips to her forehead in between breaths. She's not feverish, she just likely got swooped about like an aeroplane too soon after tea, so John relaxes and lets himself go, laughing like an idiot in dirty sheets with a dirty baby and a spotless Sherlock (somehow, the bastard).
Then there's a knock at the door. The door of the flat, not the ground floor.
He and Sherlock exchange glances, no longer laughing; even Rosie has geared down from wailing to whimpering. John shrugs.
'Come in,' Sherlock says, loudly, because of course he does; he doesn't give a toss what people think of his cleaning habits. 'We're in the master bedroom.'
A formidable grey-haired woman with a tight chignon and very no-nonsense shoes appears in the bedroom doorway. She takes in the situation, and then she tuts. Actually tuts, in a distinctly Edwardian way that John hasn't heard since his grandmother passed. 'Just as Mr Holmes suspected.'
Sherlock purses his lips. 'Mycroft sent you?'
'He certainly did. Now, out of those clothes and into the bath, please, all three of you.'
Sherlock opens his mouth to protest but the Look she gives him has him shutting it with a snap.
John would laugh if he had the fortitude. 'Beg pardon, ma'am, but he sent you because'
'Because you lot are a mess, a fact of which you seem to be unaware.'
John and Sherlock exchange another look. 'Fine,' Sherlock says curtly. 'But could you be so kind as to leave the room while we undress?'
'Certainly.' She gives a short nod, then turns on her heel and exits down the hall.
'Hang on,' John whispers loudly as they start to unbutton and unzip. 'Mycroft sent us a nanny?'
'I'm relatively certain she's his housekeeper, and just on loan for this evening.'
'I guess I should be surprised.'
'No, you shouldn't, as you're not entirely without wits.'
'Such flattery.'
'Dull.'
'It's almost sweet of your brother, really.'
Sherlock points a finger at him. 'Don't you dare.'
John's lips quirk. 'Don't worry, I won't send him a fruit basket or anything. I just-- I appreciate that he indulges a child he hardly knows, that's of no relation to him.'
Sherlock clears his throat. 'Yes, well, be that as it may, I say we take full advantage.' He pulls the now-naked toddler out of John's hands and heads towards the loo.
John watches them go, feeling quite swirled around by the last half an hour's events. But then he shakes his head at himself and his navel-gazing, and follows them.
---
John's phone buzzes while he's at work the next day, and he doesn't pay it much mind until he sees it's the day nursery. After he reads the message and is able to breathe again-- Jesus, being a father is not for the weak, is it-- he thumbs one to Sherlock.Â
Did you get the updated pickup address from the minder? Trip to park rained out.Â
He doesn't get a reply, not right away or in the next few hours.Â
This could, of course, mean a few things. John firmly puts away the worst case scenario, and reckons a case has taken priority, seeing as Sherlock knew John was available for pickup if necessary.Â
So, needless to say, he's surprised when he arrives at the given address. One, because Sherlock is there waiting. And two, because it'sâŚÂ
John stares.
'John,' Sherlock says after a moment. 'I'm afraid my brother has outdone himself.'Â
'Yes, well.' He coughs. 'I'm afraid he's turned an indoor football pitch into a Disneyland for toddlers.'
'As I said.'
'Jesus Christ.' He wonders how long Mycroft's been planning this. 'Wait-- Was this just because of the rain today?'
'Knowing Mycroft? Yes. Is that not a proportional response?'
John can hear the amusement in Sherlock's voice. 'Definitely not,' he replies, but his cheeks hurt from repressing a smile. 'Hang on,' he says. 'Why are you here? You didn't return my texts, I figured you were in the middle of a corpse or something.'
'Mycroft told me to stay put.'
John snorts. 'Didn't you think he might be using trick psychology to get you here?'
Sherlock scoffs. 'Soft science, that.'
'Sure.'
'Daddy! Sherlock!' John looks away from Sherlock at that particular mispronunciation of his flatmate's name, and is barreled into by a clumsy sparkly dervish.Â
'What--' He automatically reaches down to pick her up, then does a double take at the elaborate butterfly painted onto nearly her whole face. It's basically a work of art, honestly, and he has no idea how someone got her to sit still for that long.Â
'They are hired for speed,' Sherlock says to him, and he laughs, still impressed after all these years.Â
'Incredible.'
Sherlock glances at him. 'Whether you mean the artwork or my deducing your question about the artist, you are correct.'
John ignores him and listens to his daughter chatter enthusiastically. The words "bouncy castle" and, somehow, "golf" filter out of it, and John chuckles.
Then he hears her say something that makes him double-take. 'Pardon? Say that once more, sweetheart.'
'Uncle Mycroft!' she repeats. Or at least, most of those letters. Enough to confirm.
John's jaw clenches. 'Did he tell you to call him that?'
She nods enthusiastically. 'He's fun!'
This jars John from his confused dismay, and he hears Sherlock snort, too. 'I suppose he can be, in his own way.'
'Don't lie to your daughter, John.'
John tries not to laugh, and nearly succeeds.
You're going to have a hard time topping this for her next birthday, he writes to Mycroft. He doesn't get a reply, but he supposes that's fair.
They get halfway through the relatively short walk home. Halfway. Before the heavens open up, changing from an aggressive mist to actual splotchy rain.
John swallows a curse, ducking under an awning and already anticipating Rosie wailing about prematurely losing her face art, about being cold and wet and out of doors.Â
But when he looks at them, at Sherlock swinging his daughter down from where she'd been perched on his shoulders, he sees nothing but joy on her face.
Joy, and wet streaks of glittery violet paint. She's clinging to Sherlock's hands, and Sherlock looks -- Well, he looks really bloody happy, if John had to label it. But he hesitates in doing so, and resigns himself to just enjoying the moment.
'What,' he says once he's recovered his voice, 'Mycroft can't have a drone deliver us an umbrella?'
Sherlock chuckles, then sobers. 'He does adore her, you know.'
John looks at Sherlock, not quite hiding his surprise. 'And you're alright with that? With "Uncle Mycroft"?'
Sherlock's eyes flash with something, but John isn't quick enough to categorise it. 'A child should have a variety of influences in their life.'
'True, but--'
'And an expanded support structure they can rely on. I daresay Mycroft qualifies, don't you?'
John nods shortly, finding himself unable to form useful words.
Luckily, Sherlock does it for him. He sweeps Rosie back up into his arms and boops her nose, which makes John's eyes cross with cognitive dissonance but there it is all the same. 'Shall we continue walking and enjoying the rain?' the detective asks Rosie. 'And then have a nice bath and some tea? I'm sure your father will make up a fire, too.'
John swallows. 'Sure, yeah.'
Heart warm enough to hurt, he follows them out from under the cover and into the storm.
Time's too short, he reckons, to fuss about dreary weather.

Ruben Dias x Reader - Fix You Part 2/10
Part 3 and 4 are out on my Patreon for Free!
Summary - Reader is hired as Ruben's assistant nurse after receiving head trauma during a football game. He has fallen into a deep depression on his road to recovery and does not accept much help from Reader as she only reminds him of how incapable he is.
Enjoy!
Ruben's family were not joking when they said that if successful, you'd be hired immediately. You still had your flat in London with all of your belongings, however, that would be taken care of for you since Ruben's family were more than willing to set up a room for you in Ruben's apartment. There you received your own private quarters, with a joint bathroom and everything, not to mention your own walk-in closet.
"I kid you not, it's bigger than my old flat." You squealed into your phone.
"Well, what is he like, your employer?" Your friend Donna asked. She was currently in your apartment in London, collecting the immediate essentials that had to be shipped to you right away.
"Well, you know. He's kind of quiet." You said, having only known Ruben for two days. During these two days his physio, Max, had taken care of everything, only asking you to measure the proper proportion for Ruben's daily dose of Heparin, which was injected to prevent blood clots from forming.
"But he's hot, no?"
"Who, Max?"
"No, the guy you're working for, Ruben?"
"I don't know?" You muttered. Although he was tall and fairly built, there was something about not knowing the color of a man's eyes that didn't sit right with you. "It's the mirror to one's soul, you know."
"I'd rather wanna know the size of his...."
"Donna." You hissed. "Really?"
Her laughter buzzed in your ear. "What, it's the canal of life, you know."
"Ha, ha, very fun..."
"Y/N?"
A knock on the door interrupted you.
"Just a second!" You pressed the phone to your ear as you jumped down from your bed.
"It's Max."Â
"Yeah, just a second!"
You said goodbye to Donna and hurried up to close the suitcase that lay open on your floor. You shoved it under the bed along with other scattered items, before making your way over to the bedroom door. Max stood waiting for you in the doorway.
"Hey, I just wanted to say that I'm leaving now."
"Oh, okay, when will you be back?"
"On Monday?"
"What? But that's in three days."
"Exactly." He nodded. "I work four days and get three days off to see my girls."
"You have a family?" You said, quite disappointed by the fact. Max was really handsome for a forty-two year old.
"Anyway, If you need anything I think Ivan is stopping by tomorrow with some groceries, other than that I wrote down everything that needs to be done during the day, along with some light exercises that you can help Ruben do."
"Me, help Ruben?" You frowned. It took you two days to get comfortable living the easy life. You would've never pursued acting if you had known about being a rich man's nurse.
"Like I said," Max smiled. "If you need anything, call Ivan. He lives twenty minutes away from here."
"Alright, okay. " You nodded, accepting the situation. "Have a good weekend."
"You too."
And just like that a man's life was left in your hands. It was an odd feeling. Not scary, just odd. Nevertheless, you plotted yourself in the living room, just in case Ruben needed you he could call for help and you'd hear him. However, hours passed without a word from him. You weren't concerned at first, considering the fact that Ruben knew how to walk on his own. But after some thought, you decided to knock on his door and see if he needed anything.
"Ruben, It's me."
No answer.
"I thought that maybe I could make you a snack? Would you like that?"
Still no answer.
It hit you, what if he was bleeding out? With the trauma to his brain, perhaps he had developed some internal bleeding and now he was laying in bed, dying on your watch.
"Ruben, I'm sorry but I'm going to have to...." You burst into his room. The first thing that hit you was the breeze from the balcony with its door ajar.
"Oh, no."
Only seeing the traces of Ruben on his bed, you could only assume the worst.
"Please don't be dead, please don't be dead."
You rushed out onto the balcony, leaning over the railing, expecting to see a body laying flat on the ground. However, there was nothing, not a trace of human remains.
"You're worse than the others, you know that right?"
You gasped, hearing his low chuckle. Turning your head, you spotted Ruben, shirtless, laying on his back, arms tucked behind his neck as he bathed in the sun.
"You're....you're...."
"Not dead?" He said, raising a brow behind his bandaged eyes.
"I'm sorry, I thought...."
"That a guy with injuries like mine should consider killing himself?"
"Yes and no."Â
"Yes and no?" He frowned, "Care to elaborate?"
"Not should consider." You said. "But I believe some people would consider...doing it."
"Well, unfortunately I'm still alive."
"I can see that." You muttered.
Ruben sat up, and to your surprise removed the blindfold from his eyes by tugging it down to rest around his neck. He then reached for the bottle of sunscreen on a stool nearby, applying a drop of it on his nose.
"If you're planning on laying in the sun all day, you should probably apply sunscreen to your entire body."
He stopped the motion of putting on sunscreen, shifting his head your way. "I'm Portuguese, I'm pretty sure I can handle a dose of English sun."
"But can you handle a dose of skin cancer?"
He chuckled, eyelids flickering as he did. He seemed tempted to open them, his eyes. And for a moment that thought struck fear within you.
"Was there something you wanted?"
"Pardon?" You had been distracted. Your eyes falling onto the sight of his abs. They were visible even though he was sitting down. Something worth remembering for your next call with Donna.
"Was there something you wanted?" Ruben repeated, snatching you out of your daze. "I mean Max already gave me my shot and I don't need your help swallowing my pills."
"Right." You said. "I guess I just wanted to check on you."
"To see if I was still alive?" He grinned.
"Right." What an asshole, you thought. "Now that that's confirmed, I'll get started on dinner."
"Don't bother." He said, pulling the bandage to cover his eyes again.
"Why not?"
"Well, my mom left us food that should last us all year."
"Oh, okay."
"She's afraid that you can't cook, you know."
"Well I can."
"Yeah, but not as good as her."
"Right."
You left Ruben's room, embarrassed to have entered in the first place. Who does the guy think he is, speaking to you like some kind of servant? You wondered how long you'd be able to put up with it. Not for long you reckoned.

Hi! ^^ Can you do lloyd garmadon x reader? Like literally anything. Im so starved for fics it isnât even funny đ
A/N: this came to me in a dream
This is a drabble.
TW: DEATH, SUICIDE.
Each line break to Hamilton means new memory/setting btw
Wait for it
Theodosia writes me a letter every day
The hardest thing about being in love with a huge political and slightly governmental figure is the fact their always gone.
But there was a simple fix; writting each other.
Normally we text, but because he's always in such high altitudes and other dangerous areas, it's been easier to write letters.
I'm keeping his bed warm while he's away
And it's worked well enough. When I do get to see him, we both joke about how our relationship is just 'victorian style'.
Luckily, the other ninja have let me live in the monestary, so I get to see as much time with Lloyd when he's back. The only condition is that I do upkeep- the chores and all that.
Love doesn't discriminate, Between the sinners and the saints
"How did you and Lloyd even meet?" I hear Jay ask from behind me, slurping the last of his drunk from his straw. "I don't think you guys ever really told us"
I feel a hand slide onto my waist, and I startled lightly before realising Lloyd's finally woken up. He hugs me from behind figure encasing me in his post-nap warmth and his head lolls into my shoulder.
"We met at Doomsday. They were a new employee" Lloyd turns his head to the right to look at Jay as he speaks.
"Typically nerd stuff. Should've expected it" Jay replies rolling his eyes.
I can sense Lloyd's eye roll, but don't see it as I'm busy cooking. I do feel his head turn back into my neck, and his soft press of kisses.
It takes and it takes and it takes And we keep loving anyway
The last time I spoke to Lloyd in person there we got into a... Disagreement, of sorts.
I never meant to stir up anything.
I had asked why every ninja needed to go on every mission, instead of just sending 2 at a time.
I mean, all of them are exhausted, and could use the time to themselves, switching out shifts with each other or something.
That was the wrong thing to bring up apparently.
One thing led to another and the debate got heated, to the point I left the monistary and went to go live with my friend for the time being.
I couldn't handle it at that moment.
its been about 3 weeks since then.
We talked over phone but decided it's best to live separately because the close quarters was giving him anxiety, due to the fact their already at risk of being attacked and he didn't wanna drag me into it.
I understand that. It just hurts because he let all of it out onto me, all because of a suggestion. I can understand how worn thin he is, maybe it wasn't the best time. He had, after all, just gotten back.
He told me we would talk in person about everything, we'd lay it all on the table after he got back.
From another mission.
I didn't know its be his last.
Death doesn't Discriminate, Between the sinners and the saints.
Its kind of ironic, it ends where it began.
Doomsday comic.
It has been a normal day, until that point, I'd gone into a shift.
It wasn't until 8 hours into my 10 I heard the screaming.
Our glass windows shattered. Some sort of- monster thing breaks in through the window.
It looks decrepit and I can see the dark red dripping from its mouth, the once blue shirt sticking out of its jaw.
The smell is putrid now, and gets worse as it's ink black body creeps closer. I duck down underneath my counter and press the emergency button.
Im covering my mouth, trying to hold down the vomit from the sheer smell of the eyeless creature, and I hear it's wet patters against the floor. It looked like it was made of tar.
I don't get another moment to think before I hear a crash. It's towering over me now.
"Don't FUCKING touch them!" I hear a voice call from behind me and the creature.
A flash of green.
Lloyd.
The monster teeters where it stands from Lloyd's attack, and I make a dash for it.
"N/n stay cl-"
I don't hear the rest of Kai's warning before I turn around.
I wasn't smelling decay, I was smelling acid.
Beams falls. I scream.
A flash of green.
A gush of red.
Lloyd's arms are caged around me, and his scent would be comforting if we weren't stuck in a pile of rubble.
"Hey, baby. Are you alright?" He asks, eyes gentle and searching.
I nod.
"Ok, just uh- I'm sorry I've dragged you into this. And uh, don't look down, k?"
"Dove, I knew what I was getting myself into by dating you and wha-"
I look down.
There's at least 1, maybe 2 beams sticking out. Of his torso, one lighly impaling my leg.
I feel my bile rise again.
My eyes water. I knew what was gunna happen.
"I- I said dont-"
"No. No. No. No-"
My breath picks up.
"I- this isn't real- I cant- this-"
"hey hey hey, look in my eyes baby? Mkay?"
I look at him through my tears, his figure slightly blurry.
"its-...." he pauses, wincing and forcing another breath to enter him. "don't forget what I say next ok?"
I nod quickly.
"Y/N M/N L/N, I love you more than anything. You are my yin, you are my life. You are my everything. And I need you to know, I will always love you."
"Don't- don't speak like your gunna die, Lloyd, please."
I hear the others calling us.
"it's-" he forces another breath. Can I kiss you, one last time?"
"your not gunna-"
"we both know its give or take a few minutes, baby."
I kiss him, like it's the last time I every will.
Because it is.
Life doesn't discriminate Between the sinners and the saints It takes and it takes and it takes
I don't remember anything after that.
I miss him.
I miss my Lloyd.
It's been 6 months since then. The ninja disbanded. And I'm at the tallest tower in ninjago city, debating if I should take a leap.
Life doesn't discriminate
My left foot dangles precariously.
I jump.
Wait for it

Fuegoleon | Yami x f! reader
Fuegoleon Vermillion
Being the righteous gentleman he is, he agreed to it immediately. Salamander shook its head. He felt that he should know exactly what kind of pain you were going through, since you had your third child on the way.
You paste the stimulator on, for him. You started at level 3.
"I don't feel much honey. Feels a little ticklish."
You pressed level 5. "This is where the dilation starts, how is it?"
"okay. bearable." He walked around with the stimulator.
You pressed on 7. "we're now waiting for the right time to push~"
"Mhmm." he grunted a little, starting to feel the pain, "I think I need to sit down a little.."
He sat down with a huff and took deep breaths in and out.
You pressed 8.
"are we pushing yet, honey?" he said in between his breaths.
"nope. we're only at level 8, Fue. The dilation is not enough yet."
"Level 8?!"
You pressed 10. Fue had to sit forward and clench his fist and clutch the arm rest of the chair.
"Now you push!" you exclaimed
"honey.." he groaned, his breathing becoming laboured. "how do.. you-"
His hands reached to grab on the stimulator.
"how long-.." his sentence was more incoherent now, but you understood what he was asking
"er. usually the contractions come every 10 minutes or so and it stops after awhile..."
He was huffing and puffing, meaning that the contractions were off for now.
"And it childbirth could last like this for hours~" you reminded him.
You told him to lay down on the bed. As the contractions came, he curled his body a little.
"That wouldn't do, honey. You have to open your legs to push!" you teased him.
He tried to roll back on his back, his face muscles squirmed and tensed up. You could even see his forehead covered in sweat.
You turned the stimulator off when the contraction subsided again.
"Honey. I'm sorry you're going through this for the third time..." his face was so guilt stricken, "You're amazing for giving me 3 beautiful kids. I promise to never let them misbehave or bully you. They have to be nice to you at all times."
You laughed. Well, it gets easier one after the other, love." You grabbed a handkerchief to wipe off his sweat.
"I love you wifey." He caressed your face.
Yami Sukehiro
"no. I ain't doing that baby." he gave you the look.
"yes. you're doing it." you insisted.
Of course Yami Sukehiro could never say no to anything you wanted. He was wrapped around your pinky.
He gave a sigh as you paste the stimulator on him.
"baby. How about you press 10 right away?" Yami challenged. "Just get it over and done with."
"no?" you raised an eyebrow at him, "you have to experience the slow and gradual pain"
"you sound sick in the mind when you say that out loud, baby" he gave you a dead panned face.
"Excuse me, we woman experience this for hours. Some take 12 or more hours! I'll just let you feel the pain for a few minutes."
"okay, okay..." he was defeated, once again.
You pressed 4.
"You feel anything?"
"nope."
You pressed 6. "Dilation starts about now."
"So we're going push now?"
"no? Just a waiting game."
"I feel like might punch someone in the face if they made din right now"
You gave a little laugh, but you were impressed by your man's tolerance.
You pressed on 8.
Yami took a deep breath in and let it out slowly.
"Painful, huh." you cocked your brow and tilted your head to the side.
"I could understand why you women get upset randomly feeling this. I feel like yeeting Asta Luck and Magna right now just to let off some steam."
"Yami!" you rolled your eyes at him, "anyway, you can lie down if it's uncomfortable."
He lay down on your bed making himself comfortable. You were really impressed. This man had high tolerance to pain.
"ready for 10?"
"You mean it's not level 10 yet?"
"no?"
"what the fuck." he cursed, "okay just go."
You pressed on 10. Yami spewed a chain of curse words as the contractions came on. He scratched his head roughly.
"I don't get it, baby." he grunted.
"Get what?"
"You cry and yell at all the fuckin roaches and you go through this?"
"Hey!" you smacked his biceps
"Yeah, you can hit me now, cause I ain't feeling anything except this fucking shit."
You laughed. He must be really feeling the pain now, seeing the amount of vulgarities he was spewing.
Whenever the contractions went off, he relaxed awhile and when it came again, he was grabbing at the pillows and cursing.
"Get this damn baby out already." his face looked like he was having a bad constipation.
"Baby, remember when we had our first child, I took 8 hours?"
He eyes darted to look at you, realising all the pain you were in for that long back then.
"Yeah." you nodded your head at him, seeing that he understood what you were getting at.
"I'm sorry princess. From now onwards I'll yeet them if they misbehave, god damn it."
"You'll yeet your precious d/n?" you gave him a smirk, knowing that his little princess was his weak spot.
He paused to think for awhile, "okay you can yeet that little monkey and me out together."

taylor swift and puppy cuddles
This is just something quick I came up with while I was on my break at work today. Again itâs kind of a sequel to the other two one shots I wroteâŚnot proof-read :) also posted on ao3 :)
"Okay, so you're sure that you can handle being on your own for a week?" Katie nervously smiled. Her bags were already in the trunk of her car, if she wanted to make it to the airport on time she would have to leave now. "Katie...I am a grown woman, of course I can handle being on my own. And if I do regress I can always call the others." You gave Katie a big hug and smiled at her. You knew she was looking forward to camp, seeing her Ireland teammates and her family again. And she deserved a break. Katie did a great job at taking care of you when you were little and altough she never complained, you knew that you were asking a lot from her. "Alright," Katie sighed "Call me if you need anything!" "I will and now get in the car or you'll miss your flight! Good luck!" You waved until you couldn't see her car anymore before closing the front door. You ploped down on the couch and scrolled through your phone for a bit. The house was unnaturally quiet without Katie and Caitlin. The Aussie was a frequent guest and basically already lived with the two of you. She had left for camp yesterday, unfortunately you had been little when she had to leave, which had caused a lot of tears on your side (and a few on Caitlin's side, too) and you only calmed down once Caitlin promised to bring you back a little gift from Australia and to give you a call at least once a day. Your mind was getting a bit fuzzy when you thought about Caitlin. Hoping it would distract you from the feeling that you knew all too well, you turned on the TV. But it didn't. You knew that it would only be a few more hours, if you were lucky, before you would be little. "Okay, I can handle it. No need to call Katie..." You mumbled to yourself and decided to get a little snack. Maybe some food would distract you from the fuzzy feeling in your brain. You made yourself some cereal and sat down at the kitchen table, where you found a note from Katie. "Hi! If you need anything and you cannot reach me: Beth and Viv are at home and you can always call them or go over to their house until I can call you back." You read and smiled. Afer finishing your cereal, you put your bowl into the dishwasher and tried to think about what to do now. You didn't want to watch anything on TV, you didn't feel like reading a book and scrolling on your phone was just boring. Fortunately for you, your phone started ringing and a few seconds later Caitlin's face appeared on the screen. "Caitlin! How's camp?" "Good! We just got done with training and I thought I'd give you a quick call before we go to dinner" Caitlin said and proceeded to tell you about her day. Your brain was getting more and more fuzzy and you tried your hardest to just ignore it. But of course, Caitlin noticed anyways. "Y/N, are you okay?" She looked concerned. "Yeah, don't worry...I'm fine. Just a bit tired, that's all." You really didn't want her to worry. You were a big girl and you could handle being on your own for a week. "I don't think so, babygirl" Caitlin softly smiled. "Noooo, I'm finneeee" You whined. "Babygirl, I'm gonna call Beth and Viv to come pick you up. I really don't think you should be alone right now. Can you get your stuffie and your pacie while I call them?" "No leaving me" You sniffled. "I'm not leaving you, babygirl. I promise to call you back in 10 minutes. That's about one Bluey episode." You perked up at the mentioning of your favourite show. "Buey?" "Yes, babygirl. How about you gather all your stuffies and lay down in Mummy's bed to watch an episode of Bluey and then Caitlin will call you again. Does that sound good?" Caitlin silently prayed that it would work. You nodded and raced up to your bedroom. You gathered your bunny, the jellycat in the form of a football and your pacie. Then you layed down in Katie's big bed and turned on an episode of Bluey. As promised, Caitlin called you back before the episode was even over.
Two Bluey episodes later, you were all packed up in the backseat of Beth and Vivâs car. You held your bunny close and anxiously sucked on your pacifier. You loved Beth and Viv but had never been at their house without your Mummy before. âMyle cannot wait to see you, darling. Are you excited to go over to our house?â Beth excitedly asked. Deep down she was really fuckin anxious. She and Viv had never really taken care of you on their own. When Katie had asked them if they theoretically could watch you, while she and Caitlin were at camp, they both had agreed without hesitating for even a second. But Beth was still scared theyâd mess up. Surprisingly it was Viv, who had no doubt that they couldnât handle taking care of you. âBeth, honeyâŚplease let her breathe. Give her a few minutes, I think sheâs really really small right now.â She turned around and gave you an encouraging smile. Viv turned up the music and a few minutes you were babbling and bouncing along to Taylor Swift. Beth giggled, when little you tried to sing along to â22â (Taylorâs version, duh!) but it sounded more like âuh-uhâ. She quickly grabbed her phone and sent Katie a short video of you and Viv singing together. Not even 2 seconds later, Katie replied: âNo matter big or littleâŚthis girl loves Taylor SwiftâŚremind me to get her some tickets to the concert for her birthday!â
Once you all arrived at Beth and Vivâs house, the anxious feeling in your stomach returned. You desperately clung into Bethâs hand when you entered the house. You heard Myle before you could see her and a few seconds later the puppy rushed up to you, almost running you over. âMyle, sit down! Give her some space! MYLE!â Viv tried her best to keep the puppy away from you, but it was too late. You were already crying. âViv, take Myle outside. Iâll calm her down!â Beth picked you up and took you to their bedroom, Viv took Myle outside and joined you a few minutes later. âIâm sorry, liefje. Myle was just so excited to see you. You donât need to be afraid of her.â Viv lovingly tucked a loose strand of hair behind your ear. âMyleâs only a baby, just like you. She didnât know how else to show you that she was excited to see you. You know how you get excited when you see Kyra at training?â Beth asked and you nodded, the tears slowly stopping,âMyle gets just as excited seeing you, as you get when you see Kyra. That just means she really likes you - just how you like Kyra!â âKywa!â You smiled. The Aussie was funny and always helped you prank the others. âYes, Kyraâs at camp with Caitlin. Do you wanna call her?â Viv asked, pulling out her phone from the pocket of her hoodie. You shook your head. You wanted to see Myle. It was understandable that she was excited to see you. When you saw Kyra again after not seeing her for two weeks, you had gotten so excited that you had slammed into her without a warning and accidentally hit her nose. Kyra had ended up with a bloody nose and you had gotten a small lecture from your Mummy about not just jumping into peopleâs arms without a warning. Maybe no one had given Myle that lecture yet. âMyeeee!â You jumped up from Bethâs lap and dragged her and Viv down the stairs, into the garden. Myle excitedly ran up to you, but this time you didnât start crying. You stood still, gripping Bethâs and Vivâs hands tightly and letting Myle say hello. Once she had calmed down, you relaxed too and let go of Beth and Viv. âMyeâ You said, trying to look serious. âNo jump.â Myle tilted her head, as if she was really taking in what you were saying. âThatâs right, honey. Myle shouldnât jump. Next time she does, you just say âStop!â. Alright? How about we play some football together?â Beth smiled and pulled out a football from behind her back. Excitedly you clapped your hands and Myle barked.
Two minutes later you were running around the garden, giggling and chasing the little pink football. Myle was chasing after you and was just as excited as you to finally get someone to play with. Save to say, both you and Myle slept like log that night. Beth made sure to send both Katie and Caitlin a picture of you cuddled up with Myle on the couch, the both of you mouth wide-open and a little smile on your faces. Katie texted back immediately: âif the Taylor Swift tickets donât work out for her birthday, then Iâll just get her a dog :)â
