This is Johnny Depp in Paris, France (in 2003, when our Jenna was only a year old 💀).

This piano is the exact model I envisioned for the piano at the Lake Mansville cabin, since ((spoiler for the next upload here)) Francoise was a Parisian, and it was her piano.

I've seen this photo before, since I'm a Depp fan (been one since the 80s). I think the piano wormed its way from my memories into Afterburn because I liked it so much.

Hi this has nothing to do with anything but I wanted to share some wild shit that went down yesterday.

So my (soon to be) mother-in-law has this 200 year old piano she wants to get rid of. She's tried selling it, no go, so she asked my sister-in-law and her husband to help dismantle it and take it to the curb. This takes a few hours, as you'd expect, but they get it done. Except.

Except. There's this one solid metal piece that they need my fiancé's help for. I asked if I could offer some assistance as well. My babe said they'd call me for help if it was needed, and they didn't. But man, I wish they had.

See, I worked at a FedEx Ground for over a year during the worst part of covid (2020-2021). I was around people whose entire job was lifting shit like this metal piano piece.

The one in the front is what I'm talking about. However heavy you think this is, it's heavier. This shit is solid cast iron.

We called things like this "IC's" or "incompatibles." They couldn't be loaded onto the standard conveyer belt that would carry packages through the warehouse. Super heavy, awkward stuff would be handled by two or three jacked dudes. They'd pull it out of the truck and haul it onto a table, which became a rolling belt, and from there to a series of conveyer belts. What I'm saying is, if they had to lift or push it, there was a lot of heavy machinery involved.

But here? All they had was a CARPET, which they used to drag this beast out of the house, down the porch steps, through the front yard, and all the way around to the back side of the house where trash pick up is.

Why not use the backdoor in the first place, you might ask?

Well, because it's a pretty straight shot through the front of the house to the curb. The backdoor would require going through the kitchen, which is narrow and has a built in island counter. So. No-go.

I'm just. These three average bodied people carried a giant, solid piece of CAST IRON from the living room to the curb.

Grand Piano, gone but not forgotten

So; not long after my father passed away one of my cousins, who tunes and repairs pianos professionally, came and spent a whole day disassembling the [unplayable, unfixable] grand piano in the living room as far as two people could. It took quite a while for my son to get a couple of strong friends to lift the iron frame out of it and remove that. Then it was time to try to remove the legs. ? How?

Unsurprisingly, there was a Youtube video for removing grand piano legs. Is there ANYTHING that isn't on Youtube? The claim was that you could remove a wooden "dog" with a large screwdriver, tap the leg on the outside edge with a rubber mallet, and it would pop loose from the steel thingamajog that holds it steady. Wouldn't you know, I went down there with a rubber mallet and a bad attitude, and the darned thing . . popped right off with a satisfying click? Just like in the video. That was disorienting.

I left two legs on because we weren't ready to move all the pieces to the barn, yet, and it seemed safer to leave them on when I had the main body propped up against a wall.

This evening I was hoping to finally, FINALLY move all the pieces to a barn. At some point, my husband will upcycle them into a very nice bookshelf. So it was time to get those other two legs off.

The big screws were pretty stiff, but once I got those out and the wooden piece popped off . . the rubber mallet did the trick again. Both legs came loose easily. That never gets old. I could have EVERY project go like that and it would be refreshing and joyful every time.
