If you're ever having a bad day, try to imagine just how badly your family would survive in society if they were actually as bad at understanding and respecting peoples' boundaries as they play stupid with yours. Imagine your mom standing in court in front of a judge, arguing that yes, she did break into a stranger's car and try to hotwire it, and tried to drive off when the cops arrived, but your honour you don't understand, how could she have known that the car doors being locked means that the owner doesn't want anyone else to drive it? How could this complete stranger be so childish as to expect everyone else to read their mind and just know when they don't want their property tampered with? Obviously she wouldn't have tried committing grand theft auto if she had known that the car's legal owner doesn't want her to do that, but they could have told her that instead of just installing some silly anti-theft device on it, and expect everyone to just know what that's supposed to mean. So yes, she did do everything that she is being accused of, but she doesn't like that accusatory tone. And that's why she thinks she shouldn't go to prison.

VW wouldn't locate kidnapped child because his mother didn't pay for find-my-car subscription
The masked car-thieves who stole a Volkswagen SUV in Lake County, IL didn’t know that there was a two-year-old child in the back seat — but that’s no excuse. A violent car-theft has the potential to hurt or kill people, after all.
If you’d like an essay-formatted version of this post to read or share, here’s a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/02/28/kinderwagen/#worst-timeline
Likewise, the VW execs who decided to nonconsensually track the location of every driver and sell that data to shady brokers — but to deny car owners access to that data unless they paid for a “find my car” subscription — didn’t foresee that their cheap, bumbling subcontractors would refuse the local sheriff’s pleas to locate the car with the kidnapped toddler.
And yet, here we are. Like most (all?) major car makers, Volkswagen has filled its vehicles with surveillance gear, and has a hot side-hustle as a funnel for the data-brokerage industry.
After the masked man jumped out of a stolen BMW and leapt into the VW SUV to steal it, the child’s mother — who had been occupied bringing her other child inside her home — tried to save her two year old, who was still in the back seat. The thief “battered” her and drove off. She called 911.
The local sheriff called Volkswagen and begged them to track the car. VW refused, citing the fact that the mother had not paid for the $150 find-my-car subscription after the free trial period expired. Eventually, VW relented and called back with the location data — but not until after the stolen car had been found and the child had been retrieved.
Now that this idiotic story is in the news, VW is appropriately contrite. An anonymous company spokesman blamed the incident on “a serious breach” of company policy and threw their subcontractor under the (micro)bus, blaming it on them.
This is truly the worst of all worlds: Volkswagen is a company that has internal capacity to build innovative IT systems. Once upon a time, they had the in-house tech talent to build the “cheat device” behind Dieselgate, the means by which they turned millions of diesel vehicles into rolling gas-chambers, emitting lethal quantities of NOX.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_emissions_scandal
But on the other hand, VW doesn’t have the internal capacity to operate Car-Net, it’s unimaginatively-named, $150/year location surveillance system. That gets subbed out to a contractor who can’t be relied on to locate a literal kidnapped child.
The IT adventures that car companies get up to give farce a bad name. Ferraris have “anti-tampering” kill-switches that immobilize cars if they suspect a third-party mechanic is working on them. When one of these tripped during a child-seat installation in an underground parking garage, the $500k car locked its transmission and refused to unlock it — and the car was so far underground that its cellular modem couldn’t receive the unlock code, permanently stranding it:
https://pluralistic.net/2020/10/15/expect-the-unexpected/#drm
BMW, meanwhile, is eagerly building out “innovations” like subscription steering-wheel heaters:
https://pluralistic.net/2020/07/02/big-river/#beemers
Big Car has loaded our rides up with so much surveillance gear that they were able to run scare ads opposing Massachusetts’s Right to Repair ballot initiative, warning Bay Staters that if third parties could access the data in their cars, it would lead to their literal murders:
https://pluralistic.net/2020/09/03/rip-david-graeber/#rolling-surveillance-platforms
In short: the automotive sector has filled our cars with surveillance gear, but that data is only reliably available to commercial data-brokers and hackers who breach Big Cars’ massive data repositories. Big Car has the IT capacity to fill our cars with cheat devices — but not the capacity to operate an efficient surveillance system to use in real emergencies. Big Car says that giving you control over your car will result in your murder — but when a child’s life is on the line, they can’t give you access to your own car’s location.
This Thu (Mar 2) I’ll be in Brussels for Antitrust, Regulation and the Political Economy, along with a who’s-who of European and US trustbusters. It’s livestreamed, and both in-person and virtual attendance are free. On Fri (Mar 3), I’ll be in Graz for the Elevate Festival.

AITA for damaging product I intend on buying?
For context, I (25m) collect trading cards, most notably Pokemon. Most stores I purchase from have some kind of anti-theft mechanism on the racks where the cards hang, where the intended purpose is to make customers find an employee to unlock the device and slide the card packs off.
I, however, also really dislike talking to people (a combination of autism and just a general lack of interest) and would prefer to avoid it whenever possible. To do this, I've taken to gently ripping the card packaging ONLY where it hangs from the rack so that I can slip it off the hanger without the need to fetch the employee.
(To add to this, I don't do it for any kind of "damaged product" discount, nor do I attempt to be secretive about it. In my mind, I have nothing to hide, I'm simply making the process faster by cutting out the middleman. Some card packs are also kept behind the counter, and a proxy piece of cardboard hangs on the racks instead (not locked), when I want one of those I bring the undamaged proxy to the register while checking out as intended.)
I do this with my friends (24-28) with no issue, as they all agree with the viewpoint of "it's being paid for anyways so it shouldn't matter", but recently did it while out shopping with my mother (55f) and she looked at me like I'd grown a second head. In the car, she questioned why I'd do such a thing because "those [anti theft devices] are there for a reason" (fair, but irrelevant as I'm paying for the cards) and "if everyone pulls that bs you're just part of the problem" (which I disagree with, in my eyes the problem is actual shoplifters and not what I'm doing).
Again, I want to remind everyone that I DO pay for the cards, I'm not stealing, I'm just usually not in the mood to talk to a person more than I absolutely HAVE to.
So tumblr, AITA for a tiny rip not even half an inch long?
What are these acronyms?

Worst People To Bring Home...
Based on a poll I did the other day.
It had two days left but ehhh 1 day isn't enough and 7 days is too much tbh.
Well done Marco for being lowest on this. I am concern Sabo wasn't higher.
Under the cut is some of my FAVE tags/replies.
Doffy
The age gap might be the first concern of your folks when you bring Doffy home, that and how much cleaning up after that big shedding feather coat will be needed.
You won’t even get to introduce him, he’ll be there with a big shit-eating grin with his arms wide going MOM DAD even though you have only been dating like a month.
Prepare for the most awkward time of your life when your folks ask about his family.
Maybe get your folks some bulletproof vests in case something mildly offends Doffy at the dinner table, like your mom didn’t cook his steak how he liked.
Will sit there and go on about how much nicer the food is at all the fancy restaurants he can afford to take you.
Brings his own solid silver cutlery.
Offers NO help to your folks when cleaning up after.
Brought his own wine, wine that costs more than your car.
But brought the cheapest wine he could find as a dinner gift.
Laughs loudly and talks over your folks.
Will touch your ass in front of them.
Sheds pink feathers everywhere, and butts in conversations because he can’t wait for his turn, loving the sound of his own voice.
When asked why Doffy you just shrug and tell them how much he makes monthly and your parents sort of get it but don’t like it.
Ask you to blink twice if you want out of the relationship.
Kid
Does not take his huge clunky muddy boots off when he comes into the house, because there are too many straps and buckles and god knows what else.
He grunts in reply to things like a stroppy teenager when asked anything by your folks.
Goes to reapply his lipstick every so often and your dad asks if he always wears so much makeup and nail varnish.
0 Table manners. Is a wild mess when he doesn’t have Killer to reel him in.
If he does take off his shoes you have to deal with his bare feet and the smell.
Hands your mom a bunch of flowers that clearly were stolen from somewhere.
It’s the thought that counts right?
Wears so many piercings that every airport security in the country fears him.
Enough spikes and bling to be an anti-theft device.
Will hit on your mom a little, something casual like ‘Man your mom's banging, what? I meant it as a compliment jeez’
Your parents are lowkey scared of him but try and be nice because he mentions how no one messes with you and he does seem to love and respect you.
Burps and laughs.
Luffy
Alright! Your folks think look at this little guy, look at this little man with his straw hat and polite smile.
Sure he opens doors with all his might and leaves marks but he seems super friendly and shakes your dad's hand and gives your mom a hug.
You think it’s going well until actual dinner starts and Luffy starts telling stories of him and his brothers and all the dumb shit the three get up to and your parents start to think you are dating one of the three stoogies.
He also talks with his mouth open, eats off everyone's plates, and asks if you're done with that? And eats it before anyone has a chance to answer.
Eats loud, food flying everywhere in a flurry of grabby hands and loud billowing laughs at comments, he’s having a great time.
Your folks have no idea where this little string bean is putting it all.
Asking how you guys met and Luffy just says someone was bothering you and he punched them through a wall or something.
Info dumps about stuff, annoying your parents a little but… you could have brought worse home, right?
Law
Your folks are EXCITED to meet your fancy smart doctor-surgeon boyfriend.
Imagine their horror when they see Law with his eye bags, scruffy hoody, and jeans, all his tattoos death on his hands.
They exchange looks and definitely think he’s a doctor of something else and when you're alone in the kitchen ask if he is a dealer and or a stoner which you have to tell them it’s just sleep deprivation mixed with cheap energy drink.
When folks ask him about what it’s like to be a doctor he goes into too much detail about certain issues or surgeries that put everyone off of their food.
He’s also the fussy eater that people dread coming over to their house.
After folks went to lengths to make sure they got food he wanted he’d still reject it and end up eating a bowl of rice or cereal looking like he’s about to fall asleep any second.
Says creepy shit with a straight face or a smile.
Says things in inappropriate ways like ‘I can’t wait to be inside them and fix their heart’
But hey, at least he’s a doctor?
Zoro
Zoro always seems to have a wave of intimidation wherever he goes and your parents are a little scared of him when you and Zoro rock up.
Though he’s polite enough, if not a bit quiet.
When asked things by folks he just gives one-word replies until he’s asked about booze then he’s all ears, he’ll drink all the good stuff but at least he’s talking now?
Oh great now he’s talking.
About swords.
His special interest which he goes into great detail about. Now your parents think he’s one of those nutjobs who are ready for the zombie apocalypse.
Drinks and eats so much, talks about swords, gets out his phone and shows your dad each sword in his collection, twenty facts about them, and what their name is.
Falls asleep on the sofa after dinner and is impossible to move, guess Zoro just moved in with you guys.

Aaaaaand true to form, it was a Roseanna Roseannadanna "It's always somthin'" kinda afternoon. Went to the post office to drop off the item that got bought.
Feelin' pretty cool that at least that Apple TV sold, so that's almost $50 there, so trotted across the street to do my little video pan thing, just took things in for a minute or two, smiled, and made my way back to the truck and home.
Kept thinking I'm probably the only person on this little glorified sand bar that COULD conceivably even begin to know how to start and drive my li'l truck. Any vehicle most people have been exposed to since the '90s sometime would be a "just turn the key" kind of car. No pedal pumps. And also: clutch. lol. "Millenial Anti-Theft Device" as the mechanic I used to be able to afford to take her to would say.
Anyhow, feelin' pretty swell about my coming $50, I stopped off at the mail room before I came up to the apartment. What should I find there, but my $94.00 electric bill, due on Nov 7th.
Make fitty? Lose a hunnert.
Now if the jerks who are "watching" my listing for my Neumann Mics did more than pester me with "Would you take $XX?" emails, which is all that has happened, and BUY THE DAMN THINGS!
All of them just made me wanna line 'em up and slap 'em a-la Three Stooges. I don't fucking haggle. The price I put is the price I will get. And it's always people with either zero or (3) feedback. Why must people try to whittle you down even ridiculous amounts? It's insulting. It makes me trot out my favorite meme of its genre:
And there's the zero-feedback dude with a username like iphons4u, in San Jose...it's always San Jose. After 24 years, you can spot 'em comin'.

@tnott said “So the expert on all of this is… you?” (for Sirius from Theo)
"Yep." Sirius spread his arms out in mock celebration. "Welcome to the Headquarters of Magical Objects, and the answers to all the burning questions of your heart's content, granted that it's stored in that filing cabinet there, and relates to something no one in all the ministry actually gives a damn about." He gestured to a nearby cabinet so dusty, it was clear no one had cared to open it in years.
Two decades ago, Sirius would have considered himself the goddamn expert of the whole fucking universe. Yes, he'd been a cocky prick, but he'd had good reason for it--he'd been good, damn good. He and James hadn't just been popular in the social scene alone; they'd been top of their class. Sirius had gotten top grades in all of his OWLs and NEWTS without trying, and he'd managed to become an animagus when he was only fifteen years old, when many grown wizards couldn't pull it off. So yes, once upon a time, Sirius Orion Black had been full of promise, a rising star in the wizarding world.
And then came the war. And prison. And another god damned war. He was twenty-two when he was locked up, thirty-four before he'd managed to escape, and thirty-eight by the time the war was over and his name cleared. By that age, most people had at least some idea what they'd been put on this earth to do, but Sirius had spent the last year or so shuffling around from one job to the next in the Ministry. They had all been easy enough to get; the Ministry owed him a debt, after all. Twelve years of false imprisonment, it turned out, was worth a job or two, so Sirius tried them all, quitting after only a few short weeks.
And that was how he'd come to work in the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Department. It had been a good enough excuse to get paid for taking apart the things he already cared about: like his motorcycle, or Arthur's car. He'd long been interested in muggle technology--in muggle anything, really, that might have pissed off his parents. Now, however, they had him digging up old muggle artifacts that had been cursed and placed in museums across the country: old devices from the Roman era and Medieval Europe. Some of it had been cursed long ago with anti-theft charms and the like, but some had some pretty nasty curses, the sort of thing his parents might have concocted, and the sort of thing he'd unearthed in his family home, Number 12 Grimmauld Place, a hundred times over.
So maybe, in a manner of speaking, he was an expert. He slumped back into his office chair--he was still surprised he had an office in the first place--and threw his boots up onto the desk, crossing his arms behind his head. "What can I do you for?"

Anti theft devices on my car:
the fact that all my hubcaps have mysteriously disappeared (for several reasons I seriously doubt they were stolen)
the spider that now lives behind my driver's side rearview mirror and regularly makes a large web from the mirror across the window (no worries for me, it doesn't ever cover the handle)
#rambling#at this point I'm honestly just curious how long it will last#my car could legally drink if it were a human

Maintenance Tips: Regular maintenance can prevent costly repairs. Learn basic DIY maintenance, such as oil changes and tire rotations, to save money.
2. Maintenance and Repair Hassles
Unexpected breakdowns and regular maintenance can be both time-consuming and costly for vehicle owners. Sudden repairs often come with high costs, disrupting your budget and daily schedule.
Solutions:
Preventive Maintenance: Follow the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule to keep your vehicle in good condition and prevent larger issues.
Extended Warranties: Consider purchasing an extended warranty for added protection against major repair costs.
Reliable Mechanics: Build a relationship with a trustworthy mechanics or dealers for fair pricing and honest advice.
3. Parking and Urban Congestion
Finding parking in busy city areas can be very frustrating, and heavy traffic often wastes time and adds to stress. Many drivers struggle with the challenge of locating a parking spot and dealing with congestion.
Solutions:
Parking Apps: Use apps that help find and reserve parking spots in advance.
Public Transport Alternatives: When possible, use public transportation or carpool to reduce the number of vehicles on the road.
Urban Planning Advocacy: Support initiatives and policies that aim to improve urban infrastructure and reduce congestion.
4. Fuel Prices and Environmental Impact
Changing fuel prices can put a strain on your budget, and cars that run on gasoline add to pollution and harm the environment. High fuel costs and environmental damage are common concerns for many drivers.
Solutions:
Fuel-Efficient Driving: Adopt fuel-saving driving habits, such as smooth acceleration, maintaining steady speeds, and reducing idling.
Alternative Fuels: Explore vehicles that use alternative fuels, such as electric or hybrid models, to reduce dependency on gasoline.
Carpooling and Ride-Sharing: These options not only save money but also reduce the environmental impact.
5. Vehicle Depreciation
Cars depreciate rapidly, which can be a significant concern for those looking to sell or trade in their vehicle. This depreciation can impact resale value and make it challenging to get a fair price when upgrading to a new model.
Solutions:
Choose Wisely: Some vehicles hold their value better than others. Research models known for strong resale value before purchasing.
Regular Maintenance and Care: Keep your car in good condition to maximize its resale value. Clean the interior and exterior regularly, and address any minor repairs promptly.
Consider Leasing: Leasing can be a good option if you prefer driving a new car every few years and want to avoid long-term depreciation.
Conclusion
Owning a vehicle comes with its set of challenges, but with the right strategies, these challenges can be managed effectively. By considering cost-saving measures, staying proactive with maintenance, and making informed choices, you can enjoy the benefits of vehicle ownership without the overwhelming burden.
