I just… I look at the Marauders fandom and I think something like: no, they weren't gay icons or social justice warriors, they were the children of nobles, the children of powerful figures in their world (like Lupin) and they were actually pretty homophobic. The way Sirius not-so-subtly points out the special bond between Lucius and Severus by calling Snape a lapdog, or the way the Marauders bully Snape for 7 years for being poor, for his greasy long hair, for taking his pants off in front of the whole school (an example of how they humiliate him for being "unmanly") - their teenage versions are homophobic and have no empathy for those beneath them. Furthermore, Remus (and Peter) are willing to turn a blind eye to this to avoid being excluded from their little club.

And I'm going to say it right now: Sirius had SHORT hair at school, he grew it out in Azkaban, and he didn't cut it because he drank and was depressed. If Sirius had long, curly hair at school, James Potter would have personally cut it.

The Harry Potter world has pretty clear gender roles and a traditional view of relationships, what men and women should be like (with Rowling's distorted views adjusted), and open love affairs between men or women would be frowned upon (just look at Molly, if she saw a kiss between men, she would faint).

Plus, the number of wizards, especially purebloods, is small and they are almost all related, it is simply illogical for them to maintain relationships that cannot lead to children.

I don't think people can't write fanfics where things are different, or that all the Marauders are straight (oh my god, look at our king, Sirius Black, having a sexuality crisis because of his school nemesis AND best friend), but teenage versions of them who are LGBT+ supporters and defenders of social minorities? Nah.

These fics are set in the wizarding world but aren’t necessarily canon complaints.

A while ago I posted about how one of my favourite part of reading canon jily is when they're a bit older and Lily is looking back in retrospect. The part where James shows her how he gets that this war that's looming over them, it's bigger, older, than they are and even though the world feels like it's ending his top priority is that they remember to enjoy the happy moments. To live in those moments.

Jily has always been a hot cup of tea on a cold and rainy day for me. I hope these fics give you a short break from life, even if it's just for a moment.

For reference, anything in italics is taken from the summaries.

These first few fics are all by @gigglesandfreckles-hp. Abi's characterisation of Lily and James as individuals are so special to me. How she writes jily is perfect - I mean the banter, the tension, the overall dynamic between them is just on point!

As James stops to catch his breath, he also catches Lily’s eye, already fixed on him in the blatant, unblinking way he hasn’t seen since she used to verbally eviscerate him for minutes on end. It hits with the same mortifying heat as it always did then, when he used to stand there watching her yell at him and imagine her mouth doing everything else. He’s ridiculously grateful for whoever throws the ball straight towards his face for saving him from the fate of just standing there, watching her watch him with his dry mouth open for the rest of eternity.

In a movement of pure reflex, he grabs the ball out of the air and starts back towards the end of the pitch before Orie comes out of nowhere and takes his legs out from under him. Winded and disoriented, James sighs at the universe’s rather unsubtle visual metaphor. Is it even worth getting up again when he just keeps falling and falling and falling for her?

Lily has watched him do this multiple times before and it’s just tea and it’s just James and there should be nothing special about this particular moment, except that the sight of him, the fact of him, is suddenly earth-shattering.

Something like nostalgia fills her in a flood, only it’s the future she’s longing for, a future she can see with absolute clarity. The features James inherited from his parents are so faithfully recreated on him that it’s easy to imagine him at their age, with a shock of white, still unfairly thick hair framing a face lined by a lifetime of laughter, making her a cup of tea exactly the way she likes it and smiling as she teases him.

Don't be fooled by the summery, this is pure self indulgent smut. I complain a lot about pretentious people but the Austen and Keats reference had me swooning. The myth of Eros and Psyche is probably one of my favorites so…

First, I want to clarify that I use anti-Marauders tags not because I created this blog solely to spread hate against them or to harass their fans, but because it’s a general Tumblr rule. For nearly any post criticizing a character, you’re expected to use anti tags, as fans of that character might not want to see critical posts about their favorite. This ensures fans who may not want to see criticism of their favorite characters can filter or avoid it if they choose.

Now, you mentioned that I probably haven’t talked to a “real” Marauders fan, which is why I have anti-Marauders posts. But honestly, I don’t think all fans of the Marauders share the same views, nor is it possible to talk to every fan before making a post. I see a lot of anti-Snape content daily—much of it from Marauders fans—and often get an idea for a post that I decide to share. I imagine most bloggers do this; it’s part of engaging with fandoms online. I try to offer thoughtful critiques when possible, but that does take time. Sometimes, seeing particularly harsh, illogical, or double-standard comments pushes me to post a short, sarcastic response—one that mirrors the style of some of the content I encounter.

Overall, I wouldn’t call myself “anti All of Marauder fans.” Yes, I use terms like “Marauders fans” and “anti-Marauders” tags, but my issue is only with fans who unreasonably hate Snape and mock him (even for things like his background) or who attack Snape supporters, labeling them with hurtful terms simply for supporting him. Outside of those specific cases, I have no problem with other fans.

As for your question about Sectumsempra, I understand you’re suggesting it became Snape’s “signature” spell through frequent, harmful use. I looked up the reference you mentioned, and here’s the passage from Deathly Hallows where Lupin speaks of Sectumsempra:

“He lost his hood during the chase. Sectumsempra was always a specialty of Snape’s. I wish I could say I’d paid him back in kind, but it was all I could do to keep George on the broom after he was injured, he was losing so much blood.”

It’s worth noting the term Lupin uses here: specialty, not signature. Sectumsempra first appears in Half-Blood Prince as an unknown spell by an unnamed creator. After Harry uses it on Malfoy, it’s still an unfamiliar spell until Snape admits to creating it at the end of the book. But in Deathly Hallows, right after the Battle of the Seven Potters, Sectumsempra becomes widely associated with Snape (via Lupin’s words).

While in Half-Blood Prince the goal is to keep the creator of this spell anonymous, in Deathly Hallows it’s crucial to know exactly who used Sectumsempra during the Battle of the Seven Potters. The inconsistency here seems intentional. The author isn’t referencing Sectumsempra’s notoriety here to highlight Snape’s past; rather, I believe she brings it up as an important clue about the future. This clue gains significance after we view Snape’s memories, especially after reading Dumbledore’s line to him just before the Battle of the Seven Potters:

And Severus, if you are forced to take part in the chase, be sure to act your part convincingly… I am counting upon you to remain in Lord Voldemort’s good books as long as possible, or Hogwarts will be left to the mercy of the Carrows..."

But in THE PRINCE’S TALE, we see that Snape defies Dumbledore’s advice—he steps out of his role as a Death Eater and targets another Death Eater with a spell that’s highly conspicuous, one that could jeopardize his cover. (If successful, and had it hit another Death Eater, they would have immediately recognized the spell as Snape’s own.) So why would Snape make such an irrational choice? Why take such a risk? To save the life of Remus Lupin.

This scene is one of many that show Snape’s growth and commitment to doing the right thing—not out of loyalty to Lily, not for Dumbledore, nor for any personal reward.( And that's exactly why, in the chapter where Snape's true loyalty and the real story behind him are finally revealed, this spell and its backstory are brought up.) As he admitted in his iconic line to Dumbledore, he had grown weary of watching lives be lost when he had the power to save them. Whether it’s an old bully, Lucius and Narcissa’s son, or James and Lily’s, Snape steps in without hesitation to protect a life—even if it endangers his own

Another reason I don’t believe the author’s aim here is to highlight Snape’s crimes as a Death Eater is that there are numerous scenes throughout the series discussing Snape’s actions during that time. Yet, we never see any indication or hint from the author that Snape committed serious harm or atrocities while serving as a Death Eater. In fact, in his argument with Bellatrix, it’s mentioned that Snape actively tried to avoid participating in missions. During his planning conversations with Dumbledore, we’re also told that his soul has never been tainted by murder. And in Karkaroff’s trial, there’s no crime or accusation he can use against Snape.

this, all of this. it makes me so angry to see lily evans being cast aside for the sake of a jegulus narrative when the james we know from canon (and most ff up until, like, the pandemic probably) would NEVER be with a death eater blood supremacist member of sirius’s abusive family. it’s so disgusting to see her as a surrogate for james and regulus, or be some woman in the background. she died because of her love for harry, which is because of her love for james, and she saved the wizarding world. and all of it that OP said about jegulus, the new characterization of james, and of sirius, this fandom is so weird about gay men that it reduces and removes women from the narrative and i’m so sick of it.

“Having deep connections is good! For example, you can know my deepest, darkest fear! My boggart!” James burst out in short, sporadic exclamations.

“Are you okay?” Regulus was genuinely concerned at this point.

“Yep! Fine! It’s just! My boggart is your mother! Shit!” James sealed his lips shut, even though his insides were still exploding out of panic.

Regulus wanted to laugh. He settled on a neutral face because smiling was awkward. However, this only made James fidget more. Then Regulus realised that an anxious James was actually kinda cute, and he wanted to see more of this.

“Oh? You find my mother scary? You think the dear, sweet woman who raised me belongs in nightmares?”

James shook his head. “No, er, I’m sorry, it’s just, I’ve only seen her around Sirius, and she’s kinda terrifying, have you seen? And Sirius says that my parents are so great that when I saw someone just slightly more scary, she immediately became my boggart, so I don’t think she belongs in nightmares, she’s just my nightmare, shit, not like that…” James trailed off into stutters and looked at Regulus rather pitifully.

Again, Regulus wanted to laugh. He hummed thoughtfully. “You know… I look strikingly like my mother, don’t I? Are you scared of me now?”

“Of course not! You could never be scary to me! I’m sorry, I can’t control my boggart, but if an anti-boggart existed, mine would definitely be you! You’re very cute, and pretty, and you make me feel the opposite of scared! Safe!” James shouted vehemently, dark hair flying everywhere as he nodded thoroughly.

This time, Regulus did laugh, soft and quiet. He glanced at his feet. “It’s okay, James. I know my mum’s a nightmare. And… you’d be my anti-boggart too.”

When he looked back up, James was grinning from ear to ear. He realised he was too.

I'm assuming you meant ships and not fics, and that you really want me to get controversial, huh.

So, like, I wouldn't call it "against," as I have nothing against people shipping anything, and I don't even mind seeing some of the ships on this list on occasion. These are just ships I don't personally find compelling (some of them I can find objectively compelling and are just not to my taste), so it really isn't "against", more like not my cup of tea ships.

Also, ship whatever you ship, I really don't care what anyone else ships, and these are just some of my subjective opinions. So, in no particular order:

1. Hinny

I talked about my dislike of Hinny plenty, and I have a substantial "anti hinny" tag on this blog, which I will refer to here (and the tag here, if you're interested)

2. Drarry

I talked about Drarry here. Drarry is a pairing that has so much going for it, I wish I could like it, but I find Draco's canon character annoying, so I can't ship him with Harry who's my favorite and gets only the best from me when it comes to shipping. So, it's a not my cup of tea thing.

3. Linny

Talked about them here. I just never got the impression Ginny truly respects Luna, and that sucks for Luna and this relationship.

4. Wolfstar

So, this is, I guess, a big one to say I don't particularly like, and I'll give a bit of my reasoning.

My canon-loving self can't get behind fanon Wolfstar at all. They're not even actually the characters, and as Sirius is one of my favorites, I really dislike his fanon version. Additionally, as I mentioned about Drarry, I can't really be invested in a ship where I don't feel about the characters the same way (that's a me thing), and as I love canon Sirius but am very critical of canon Remus, that also stops me from ever really liking this pairing.

But even if we ignore my own opinions about the characters and talk about canon Wolfstar — I'm not a fan.

I just don't think they work. Like, I can see them having sex during OotP, but I wouldn't call it a healthy relationship. I can see it because they're the only Mauraders left, and neither of them is in a good mental space. Like, I can see them getting into a messy situationship because they're depressed and they miss the dead, and this could be super interesting, but it isn't the form Wolfstar usually takes.

I mean, both of them were James' freinds first and each other's second. James was the most important person to Sirius, but also to Remus, I think. Like, James was the one who held the Mauraders together. Sirius would not have befriended Remus and Peter without James, I guarantee it.

I mean, it's telling both thought of the other as a traitor and potential spy during/after the war. And I think, even during the books, they never really got over it, they just kinda cast it aside.

Like, it's mostly that I can't get behind how Wolfstar is portrayed in the fandom, even when the characters stick closer to canon. I just don't see this as a good relationship. I think, if they were to get together as adults, it would be so much messier. And I can't imagine them getting together as teens during school, since, I think at that point, the interest in each other wouldn't be there. I never saw them as each other's first choice. Like if they had to choose which Maurader other than themselves to save — they'd both choose James.

It might also be my Prongsfoot agenda speaking, but, like, you can't tell me Sirius "it's been 14 years and there wasn't a day I didn't think about your father" Black wasn't in love with James Potter since, like, day 1. I honestly believe in the canon books, Sirius was in love with James (not the other way though, I think in canon it was one-sided, but James did love Sirius, just not romantically).

5. Jegulus

I need to talk about this, I guess. Like, I probably wouldn't have minded canon James being shipped with Canon Regulus (although, I'm iffy about that too, becouse James likes having "the best" and according to Harry and Slughorn Regulus is just a downgraded Sirius, so why would James go for the seemingly "lesser" Black Brother when Sirius is right there and more than willing.) But the fanon version of both of them are just really not for me.

Neither of them actually feels like the characters they are supposed to be. Like, they kinda remind me of the fanon portrayal of Percico (Percy x Nico, from Percy Jackson) back in the day (haven't been in the PJO fandom in years, so I don't know what they're up to now). Like, I think fanon Jegulus is a Percico variant, and I wonder what the Fandom overlaps is.

6. Harry x Cedric

I can get behind the idea Harry fancied Cedric a bit in 4th year. It makes sense, I understand Harry, Cedric is hot, Harry's hormonal, of course, he'd have a bit of a crush. I just don't think they would make an interesting or particularly good couple.

Like, the fact Cedric dated Cho for as long as he did tells me he would not have gotten along in a relationship with Harry. Becouse Harry and Cho are very different people who look for different things in a relationship. I think Harry would find Cedric frustrating as he found Cho if they actually tried to date or got a chance to get closer.

7. Snape x any of the golden trio

Again, no hate, just, this one is really not for me, and I never really wanted to read it.

8. Bellatrix x any of the golden trio

Same as above.

9. Vernon or Petunia with anyone other than each other

I just don't think anyone else (except maybe Marge) deserves it. I can get behind Petunia cheating on Vernon with Marge.

10. Bellamort

I talked about it here. And I just can't get behind it. I don't find them particularly interesting, I don't think Voldemort was interested in Bellatrix romantically in canon (they might've had sex), and I don't think he particularly respects her while she's obsessed with him. So, I don't find them (be it canon or fanon) compelling to read about. The fact that Bellatrix would be easy for Voldemort to be in a relationship with doesn't mean it's a good thing, I think Voldemort should struggle in a relationship. The most interesting Voldemort ships push him into a character arc, and Bellamort doesn't do that.

11. Ron x Lavender and 12. Harry x Ginny

I feel like canon speaks for itself, but I wrote a bit about Harry and Cho here.

13. Most Dumbledore ships.

Mostly becouse Dumbledore is a character I'm not usually interested in shipping. I'm interested in Grindledore because of its impact on Dumbledore's character, but, he's just not a character I want to read a romance about. This is my personal opinion.

I have a lot of other ships I'm indifferent towards. Like, Snape with either Lucius or Narcissa, or Pansy x Hermione, I'm not a big fan, but I don't dislike them, just indifferent.

I'm also sure I missed a bunch, but I tried to hit the big ones I don't like. Though, even with some of these, if the summary is interesting I might read a fic with them.

Enough of constantly in pain Remus (this is about him in Canon not a comment about personal HCs). When we meet him hes jumping around and giggling for most of the book. He's friendly and funny and a trickster. He is tired after his transformations, which also cause him to lose weight and to look sickly. Between them he looks healthy and is able to teach like 28 classes a week no problem. Before poa he had it harder than other people to get a job bc he's a werewolf, but it wasn't impossible, and there is no reason to think James didn't leave him an inheritance.

He becomes the tired and stressed out man in ootp. When it's impossible to get work as a werewolf even with a full hogwarts education and all the connections that he has. Should James have left him any money it's not unreasonable to think it ran short after 14 years, and the upkeep of his welsh home would then also prove harder - a reason why he'd move in with Sirius.

I mean, the sad and broken man of ootp and hbp is not the man we meet in poa, nothing close to it! He is reckless and charming and brash, he sets up obstacle courses for his exams which he has to reset for each of his students and be ready to rescue them from. The anti werewolf laws set up in ootp really really hurt him, and we see that in the books. This isn't his normal state

Every time I get upset about Wolfstar and how sidelined James and Sirius’ friendship is, I think about the fact that had I not lost it and started ranting, I would never have started talking to @casurlaub ❤️❤️

I have since learned that fanon wolfstar should be kept very separate from canon compliant characters wolfstar which doesn’t change their personalities and explore both the good and bad of such a ship. And of course this version should always have platonic prongsfoot because in no universe can James be kept in the background where Sirius is concerned. Love doesn’t have to be a zero sum game, despite the fanon version of Sirius and Remus clearly feeling that way, pushing James away (ideally into the arms of a misunderstood fanon Regulus).

But most importantly I’ve met my HP soulmate and I feel the interweb should know this! 🥰

Why do you think people take Tonks' character traits and give them to Sirius?

Because Tonks is one of the most disrespected characters.

But I also think how the fandom portrays Sirius is larger than people ignoring the existence of Tonks. There are many interpretations of Sirius in fandom, including, but not limited to, punk, 70s rocker, Rebel Without A Cause, feminine, and androgynous, and I think the different aesthetics reflect our individual interpretations of what cool and rebellious mean.

Sirius is described as cool, and we know he is a troublemaker who ran away from his family and owns a motorcycle. I think people took those tidbits and pictured an image of someone like Jess Mariano from Gilmore Girls. Or they imagined a Bowie-loving glam rocker or they imagined a more modern queer aesthetic. Or various other things that i've seen in the past 20 years.

And I don't necessarily blame people for imagining characters in muggle clothes versus wizard fashion because robes aren't described in detail compared to muggle clothes in the books. And robes just don't seem cool, you know? They are medieval and weird.

You know who is cool? Bill Weasley with his fang earring and boots. Bill's fashion and appearance, just like Tonks, is described in detail. It is easy to visualize.

What do we know of Sirius?

Sirius is a rebel. He ran away from home and is extremely critical of upper-class wizarding society, the government, and blood purism. He joined a secret underground anti-fascist organization! He was a fighter on the frontlines of a war where they were outnumbered 20 to 1! His motorcycle is a sign of his interest in some parts of muggle culture and rebeling but I think it also says a lot more about his advanced skill and his need to keep himself busy.

He has long hair! But the long hair isn't a style choice. He didn't have a barber in Azkaban and then his grooming declined in OOTP when he was depressed. Pre-Azkaban, Sirius had short hair.

He wore a phoenix t-shirt in the prequel short story.

He wore Azkaban robes (again not a style choice)

He wore whatever he found in Grimmauld Place.

Tattoos and piercings are never mentioned when describing Sirius but they are for other characters.

But what I think people also ignore when assigning an aesthetic to a teenage and young adult Sirius Black is his privileged upbringing and how that shapes his personality and sense of self and how he'd present himself. I know @artemisia-black has written about this before and you should check out her blog for some great Sirius metas.

I'm not saying Sirius never wore muggle clothes but I don't think he'd be dedicated to representing a muggle subculture or style. He'd be better at dressing muggle than other pure bloods but he'd keep it simple, not fashionable.

Riddle Era Black Family Headcanons

Lucretia & Orion's side of the family had gray eyes, Walburga, Alphard, & Cygnus's side had dark blue.

Both sides had pin strait, raven black hair.

Sirius & Regulus both looked more like their father and inherited his gray eyes but they both also had Walburga's dimples.

Druella Rosier had curly blonde ringlets. Bellatrix inherited the curls but had Cygnus's dark hair while Narcissa inherited the blonde color and her father strait hair texture. Andromeda's hair was brown and wavy.

Bellatrix & Andromeda looked identical to Walburga, hair aside.

Alphard was a Metamorphmagus like his great-niece Nymphadora Tonks. His hair was usually viridian green.

Cygnus was the forgotten child of the generation. Walburga was the firstborn spoiled princess who also happened to be a prodigy witch and Alphard just had a natural charm that drew people to him.

Alphard was literally Slytherin Sirius personality wise.

Even though all of the Blacks except Lucretia supported Voldemort at one point in their life, Cygnus was the only Death Eater in the family until Bellatrix & Regulus. Orion, Walburga, & Alphard just weren't willing to do any dirty work for anyone.

Alphard stopped believing in blood supremacy later on in life, although, like Lucretia he was never open about that fact.

Orion & Walburga had a low key toxic relationship. They were incredibly possessive over each other and would be foaming at the mouth if they saw each other so much as laugh when interacting with someone else. Despite knowing it would piss their spouse off, they both liked flirting with other people because they both enjoyed attention.

Literally no one thought Orion & Walburga were a good couple. Most people were grossed out by them being cousins like Alphard & Lucretia who were also close with each other but would never have been able to see each other in a romantic way and even those who weren't bothered by the incest found them insufferable when together.

Lucretia had short hair and played Quidditch. She was a chaser and met her future husband Ignatius Prewett in the Gryffindor vs. Slytherin match. He asked her out immediately after but she rejected him at first because her family would have some issues with her marrying a Gryffindor.

Ignatius was persistent though and eventually it worked out for them, even though Ignatius had to pretend to be anti-muggle for her family to accept him. However, there was still some tension so they didn't visit her family often.

Alphard was also a Quidditch player and the most supportive about Lucretia's relationship with Ignatius.

bartylus!! Thoughts?

they make me sick in the head.. sick i tell you.. but i’ve compiled a little collection of posts for you about them <3 + there’s a lot of stuff under my /bartylus tag!!

this is a fic im currently writing but honestly im writing it so slowly that im starting to doubt it’ll ever be posted. it’s loosely based on the orpheus and eurydice myth but darker. long story short barty brings him back after the cave and it changes nothing in the narrative. miserable <3

this is a poem by richard siken that drives me crazy and is also a huge inspiration for my bartylus opheus/eurydice au……. like: ”Okay, so I’m the dragon. Big deal. You still get to be the hero.” and ”You see, I take the parts that I remember and stitch them back together to make a creature that will do what I say or love me back.” and ”The entire history of human desire takes about seventy minutes to tell. Unfortunately we don’t have that kind of time.” - but honestly. the entire poem makes me feel sick to my stomach about bartylus

and!!!! i read this bartylus microfic by @carniferous a while back which made me fucking choke. i hadn’t thought about bartylus in a while because i’ve been absolutely insane over over ships (bellucius, lurthur, maryjames, tl, etc…). like i genuinely had to lay down after reading it and i frequently go back to it still to reread it. ”you were hardly the first to ask,” ”i didn’t ask,” like are you JOKINGGTTTTGGG. i think about it sometimes randomly at work and my head starts spinning. genuinely insane. please follow dil and read their fics and microfics. insane insane insane

bartylus makes me insane. i used to be sort of anti bartylus as a ship ???? like it just didn’t make sense to me at all for a while and then something just. clicked. probably thanks to @stillagoodwitch…… my favorite version of them is canon bartylus i think. everythings miserable and awful, but they’re also just teenage boys at magical boarding school. like yeah, sirius said he hated regulus during winter break, but barty’s waiting for him at kings cross with a black eye from his father but he’s also sporting a huge grin when he sees reg. like.. they also had fun and that drives me fucking insane. they stay up late in the common room making each other laugh and everything else (everything that’s about to come) is just background noise. like…. they’re just boys.. despite everything….

Happy happy birthday darling @wolfpants! I’m so excited to be finally doing a reclist with my Wolf faves. I still remember the sense of awe I felt reading the magnificent Hollow (my very first Remus/Draco, so brilliant and poignant it got me immediately sold on the ship and also obsessed with that verse). Whether it’s Drarry or rare pair goodness, Wolf always delivers top notch cottagecore porn romance with gorgeous settings, captivating characters and a perfect mix of angst, fluff and smut, what else could we ask for? I’ve had so much fun selecting my own favorites for this list.
