Death of the male character to bolster the female one is a sign of weakness. huge red flag. don't trust you if you do it. if you kill Danny Ocean to put his sister in the spotlight that's a no-go. if you have to have to have the Hulk's cousin belittle him to make her look strong that's a hard pass. if you have to make Loki less competent to define "Lady Loki's" power that's a turnoff. make her stand on her own two feet without touching him or admit you've got nothing.

anti-curse
pairing: percy jackson x daughter of apollo!reader
summary: whether he knew it or not, percy jackson made the world a better, brighter place — and you intend to protect him, no matter what path the fates leads you down. fuck prophetic dreams. the future wasn't written in stone.
warnings/disclaimers: mentions of typical demigod things (battles, weapons, etc.); this is set during the heroes of olympus series so roughly follows that plot + features the seven demigods; mainly inspired by book!percy (dark hair, sea green eyes) bc that's the one i fell in love w growing up; characters are aged up from the book (reader + percy are meant to be 21-22 y/o) bc i imagine there was more time between prophecies/series....anyways, please enjoy <3
when you first met percy jackson, he almost shot you through the chest with an arrow.
given that apollo is your godly parent, you often found yourself at the archery field, which happened to be one of the first stops on percy’s tour of camp half-blood. after that first mishap, your other half-siblings were, understandably, too scared to let percy try again — frankly chiron seemed a bit hesitant as well — and you could sense that percy felt disheartened. so, you flashed the boy a reassuring smile before giving him a few pointers and a second chance. when he smiled back at you, you felt a fluttering in your stomach that told you percy jackson would be more than a little important in your life.
archery still wasn't percy's strong suit, but your gut feeling turned out to be true. you and percy had dealt with a lot since then — a handful of quests, several prophecies, more than a few near-death experiences, a titan war, and, maybe worst of all, high school. you couldn't imagine getting through any of it without him by your side, and you knew the feeling was mutual.
so, you were entirely anticipating that percy would be hurt by your announcement during dinner.
“no way that’s happening.” percy laughs, as if he can’t believe you’d suggest something as ridiculous as not having him accompany you on your quest. he remains unfazed, takes a sip of his electric blue coke before gesturing to the empty seat next to him. “come on, sunshine. have something to eat.”
the nickname sends your heart into a frenzy as you sit next to him. you and percy had never been anything other than friends, but sometimes....sometimes you look at his dangerous ocean eyes and wind-swept dark hair and it makes you blush. sometimes you consider the way his laughter fills you with warmth and his smile holds a thousand memories, the way he teases and winks at you and you decide that he makes your world so much brighter. sometimes you remember how sarcastic and thoughtful and loyal and reckless he is, his heart of gold and unpredictability of the sea. and you start to think that maybe possibly you'd fallen in love with your best friend.
that was not the issue at hand, though. you summon your favourite food and drink, but don't particularly feel like having either. percy returns to his conversation with hazel about how the two of you would drive up to montauk after you finally got your license, any time either of you needed to escape your reality, even just for a night. you'd sit on the beach, stargazing and roasting stale marshmallows and wishing to stay there forever. hazel seems to think that sounds like a nice escape, and percy promises that once the eight of you fulfill this prophecy, you'll all go to the beach house together, which makes hazel break out into a grin.
you can't help but smile at percy who loves his friends, who has loved you for so long. that feeling is quickly replaced by a pang in your chest that reminds you what's at stake. from the corner of your eye, you notice annabeth across from you, who looks at you like you’re a puzzle she can’t quite solve. you're trying to hide it, but if anyone can read you better than percy, it's annabeth. she knows something is weighing on your mind. you briefly lock eyes with jason, who you had gone to earlier for help, from the other side of the room, where he sits between piper and frank.
if you weren’t so distracted, you would have been able to enjoy dinner. the eight of you — all demigods of the current great prophecy — hadn’t been all together in a while, and it was nice to share a meal aboard the argo ii despite the reality of why you’d all been traveling together. leo had equipped the ship with magic plates and cups, and with the lively jokes and stories filling the air, you could almost imagine it was an ordinary summer evening at camp. you could almost forget that tomorrow, you had to go on a quest to rescue apollo and artemis from python, a monster so powerful your father barely defeated him thousands of years ago. you could almost ignore the impending war with gaea and the giants, and the doomed fate of the world if you were to fail. the one thing you could no longer ignore, however, is the gut feeling you have about the fate of the boy sitting next to you if your quest is to unfold the way you had first planned it.
you clear your throat, an attempt to interrupt the group's conversations.
“i was serious earlier,” you declare. “you’re not coming with me, percy. jason is.”
the smile percy had on his face fades. his eyes are filled with concern and disbelief, as he glances at you. “i – i don’t understand.”
"percy,” jason jumps in carefully, aware that he’s treading through dangerous waters like you had warned him. “y/n and i were strategizing earlier and it seems to make the most sense, given our powers combined."
percy shakes his head. “but — but you can’t just make last minute changes. we’ve already got everything set. right, valdez?”
leo shrugs, swallowing a mouthful of chicken before responding. “i don’t know, man. i’m no expert in quests, but it seems like i’m not the one who should be deciding this.” leo looks at you, and you nod gratefully.
you've been on edge since last night, and to calm your nerves you fiddle with the gold chain around your neck. it was a gift from your father: a necklace with a music note charm that can transform into an electric guitar or a bow and quiver. thankfully, you hadn't had to need both at the same time.
“it's up to me. and i want leo and jason to come with me.”
“then i’ll come too,” percy's voice remains calm, but insistant.
“isn’t there that thing about quests usually being done in threes?”
“that is true, piper,” percy agrees. he tilts his head towards you, like he's calling on you to remember. "exceptions have been made, though. like that one time with zoe." that had been years ago, when demigods from camp half-blood and hunters of artemis joined forces. five had been sent out on a quest, but only three came back. you shiver at the thought.
"or my quest through the labyrinth," annabeth recalls.
"but won't that also change our other plans, though?" hazel asks.
"not necessarily," you pipe in, your voice more assertive. "if jason and percy just switch. no harm done."
"we're not interchangeable," percy grumbles.
"hera sure seemed to think so!" leo searches the room for positive responses to his joke, but the most he gets is a half-hearted laugh from frank. "too soon?"
you take a deep breath. "it's not a big deal, really."
"it kind of is," percy counters. "you've never gone on a quest without me."
"you've gone on quests without me," you point out.
"that's...that's different."
"why? because i'm so weak that i need the son of the sea god to protect me at all times?"
you're giving percy the coldest stare you ever have. he hesitates to hold your gaze.
"you know that's not what i meant," he sighs.
"then what did you mean?"
percy looks at you, his eyes and tone softer. “look, sunshine, let's just stick with the plan, alright? we can just —”
“gods, you never listen, do you?" you finally snap. "you're not coming! i don’t want you there, percy!”
percy stares at you, stunned. you look around the table, and everyone looks back at you, wide-eyed. they weren’t used to this side of you, your sudden outburst not fitting in with your usually sunny disposition.
“well, someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed,” leo jokes in an attempt to lighten the mood, with less than ideal results.
“you saw something in your dreams, didn’t you?” annabeth realizes.
her conclusion makes you freeze.
demigod dreams are always significant, carrying vivid images of monsters, messages from friends or enemies. some children of apollo like you had visions of the future — pseudo prophecies that are supposedly set to unfold given the path you’re on. technically, you weren’t supposed to share your visions, something about messing with fate or destiny, but that didn’t mean you had to accept the way things were.
what you saw in your dreams last night, what might happen to percy, made your blood run cold.
you would defy all the laws of the universe and divine rules if it meant you could protect him. so fuck the path the fates are attempting to lead you down, and fuck prophetic dreams. you refuse to let percy die. no matter how frustrated you’re acting towards him in this moment, you know he would still do the same for you.
you figure that the future isn't written in stone, right?
either way, you're willing to challenge destiny for percy jackson.
without answering annabeth, you get up from the table and take a deep breath, carefully avoiding percy’s gaze.
“i go with leo and jason, or i go alone.” your voice is steady, fighting the heavy beating of your heart and tears caught in your throat. “either way, i leave in the morning.” you exit the mess hall before anyone — before percy — can protest.

Insurgency: Front Lines
Summary: A totalitarian regime reigns over a South American country in which the virus is being distributed to its citizens at the pretense of a “cure.” Leon was sent to retrieve a sample of the virus mutation when he stumbled upon a group of anti-government activists whose main goal is to overthrow their government. Will Leon help the cause or will he fall down with the government as well?
Warning: Mentions of mature themes. Read at your own discretion. Slow burn. Age gap (Leon is 38 and reader is 21+). Reader is female.

[part one][part two][part three][part four][part five][part six][part seven][part eight][bonus]
“The most effective way to destroy people is to deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history.” - George Orwell, 1984
Leon woke up early the next following day, he had a special mission to accomplish and he’d rather do it sooner than later.
His footsteps were heavy as he walked towards the private plane. He was armed with his weapons and vest as the other soldiers walked ahead of him in similar outfits.
Once he was inside the place, he put in the seatbelt and stared out the window.
As the other soldiers settled in, a chief commander stepped in and began to address the group.
“Good morning soldiers. Today we are to fulfill our duty as not only Americans but as aiders. We are to help and be on our top game, this isn’t like any other battle. We are fighting against rebels and we must ensure the safety of the innocent. If any of you do not feel fit for the job, leave now.”
No one stood up, they all watched in silence as the commander continued, “I will be your commander. Call me Commander Pittman. That’s all.”
The commander left towards the front of the plane, leaving Leon and the other soldiers dwell on his words.
“The Leon S. Kennedy is joining us on our trip,” one of the soldiers taunted. Leon didn’t pay much attention, only giving him a brief look before looking back out the window as the plane took off.
“Yep, the one and only,” Leon replied begrudgingly.
“Did you practice your Spanish? Get it? Because you went to Spain to save the president’s daughter?” The soldier snickered and Leon, one again, didn’t pay much attention. He’s gotten used to all the comments- good or bad ones. Right now he had to focus. He was put on a very special and secret mission and he couldn’t afford to screw it up.
As the plane took off, the sky began to turn dark. Pruye was an island hours far from the U.S. It was located right in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
Leon closed his eyes and decided to get some rest before hell started all over again for him.
-
You were now sitting around a campfire inside the underground system of La Sénte Mountain. The Insurgents had built a system inside the mountain that led them underground, where they lived.
As you sat in front of the fire, you couldn’t stop thinking about Franco, Esme, and your bother. All taken away from you by the government. You were angry, sad, infuriated. You felt a lot right now.
One of the men who had pointed their guns at you came over and sat next to you, offering you a bowl of warm soup, “For you. Yarina wants you fed and rested for tomorrow- says you’ll need it.”
You took the bowl of soup and took a small sip out of it. It tasted good, pork with vegetables.
“Thanks,” you mumbled as you kept eating.
“My name is Josue, sorry about earlier,” he nodded at you and then gazed at the fire.
“No, I get it. Can’t trust anyone in a war, right?”
He chuckled at your statement as he shook his head, “At least you get it.”
Silence overtook the two of you but you still kept eating. It’s been a while since you’ve last ate and you were grateful to have been given some food and shelter.
“Here’s the plan, novata,” he started quietly, “I’ll teach you how to use a gun and in exchange you do something for me.”
You nodded slowly, “Okay.. what do you want me to do?”
Josue pulled out a picture of a young girl that looked exactly like him. Brown hair and green eyes.
“This is my sister, Victoria. Right now she’s in San Bandero. She’s a medic, she worked with us for a couple years but then got captured by la presidenta,” he explained in a hushed tone. Josue looked around before leaning to whisper in your ear.
“If you bring her back alive, I promise I can get you out of Pruye.”
Your body froze at his words. He could find a way of out of this island?
“That sounds risky, Josue. You heard Yarina, there are soldiers are every port. There’s no way neither of us wouldn’t get spotted,” you looked back down at your half eaten soup before looking back at him. The flames of the fire illuminating his facial features.
“I’ll bring her back. But I get to hold on for a favor in the future.”
Josue stared at you, thinking about your deal. After some time he nodded, “Fine. I’ll agree to that.”
Josue looked around once again before giving you his handgun, “We’ll start small and work your way up to the big ones, okay?”
You nodded and took the handgun, placing the now empty bowl of soup on the floor. Josue motioned for you to stand up and follow him towards one of the rooms inside the underground system. Composed of metallic hallways and sliding doors, he led you to a door with the number 279 imprinted on it.
He slid the door open, “Ladies first.”
You walked into the room first as he followed behind you and closed the door.
“This is El Rango de Disparo,” Josue explained as he stepped forward. The shooting range was made of metal and so were the mummies. There were only three since the room was so small. The dim light barely illuminated enough of the room to even make out the targets on the dummies’ chest. But still, it was better than nothing.
“Now, I want you to aim your gun at any of these three unfortunate dummies. Don’t pull the trigger, it doesn’t have any bullets yet,” you stepped forward and face the middle dummy.
You pulled out the handgun from your back pocket and aimed it at the dummy’s chest. The circular target that was hand painted was colored in a bright red, the same one from the map you saw earlier. These people made their own resources.
“Okay, nice form. Your arm is tense, relax. Put your left leg behind, create a strong stance in case the enemy decides to throw you off balance.”
You nodded at his words and did as he said.
“Good, now give me your gun,” he put his hand out as you handed him the gun. He took out a pack of bullets and began to show you the basics.
“This is a bullet,” he held the silver metallic bullet between his thumb and index finger, “Small but deadly.”
He then pulled out a magazine, “This is a maganize- no, not the paper ones you see on the stores. This one contains bullets.”
You took the magazine and felt its weight, “You need to put this,” he pointed to the magazine, “inside this,” he then pointed to the gun.
“Just pull on this tiny lever,” he pointed to the top of the gun near the end where it had a small lever pull, “It should release the empty magazine.”
You pulled on the small lever and watched as the used magazine fell down into your palm. It was empty.
“Okay, now put the new one inside, should be easy,” he mumbled the last part as he watched you insert the loaded magazine into the gun. He clapped quietly.
“Good job, novata, now pull on the slide,” he tapped the slide on top of the gun. You gently grasped the top part and slid it backwards and watched as I slid forward with a clinking sound.
“You’re all set, now shoot that dummy,” you took a deep breath and aimed the gun at the middle dummy. Your index finger slowly curled into the trigger before pulling on it.
The sound of a gunshot fired echoed through the room as you watched the bullet go through the center of the red circle target. Josue whistled and then crossed his arms over his chest.
“So you can shoot… nicely done,” he patted your shoulder.
You smiled softly as you actually saw the way you perfectly aimed the dummy’s target. Who knew you had an affinity for gun shooting?
-
It was a long morning for Leon. The different time zones made his brain become a little mushy before he finally realize where he was.
It was morning when he left and it’s morning at he arrived at Pruye. It seemed like this morning lasted for an entire day.
He groaned as he woke up and stretched in his seat. He looked around and saw that he was the only one away so far. Leon sighed and walked over to the restroom of the plane.
He stood in front of the sink mirror and splashed water on his face. As he stared back at his reflection, the pilot began to speak over the speaker, "We will land in 45 minutes. I repeat, we will land in 45 minutes."
With a heavy sigh, Leon checked his weapons while still being in the restroom. One thing about Leon, although it may not look like it, is that he always made sure his guns were prepared. Maybe it was because he worked such a dangerous job all the time, maybe it was also because he liked to have some sense of control in his life.
He went back to his seat and noticed that all the other soldiers had started to wake up. The closer they got to Pruye, the more horrible his gut feeling became. He knew something would happen once they stepped foot in the foreign country. But maybe it was the PTSD talking.
Leon sat back down and kept staring out the window as the view of the country began to set into place. It was a small island with a lot of buildings.
-
You were with Yarina as she briefed you on the latest news, "We've received a plane signal up in the sky. American Airlines are approaching and are about half an hour from landing. I want you and four other people to make your way over there and extract as much information in this USB," she handed you a black USB port.
"Y/n, the future of our country depends on whatever you find inside that building," She took a step closer to you, "If you must, shoot anyone who gets in the way. We cannot afford to fail, not right now when the opportunity is too good to ignore."
You nodded slowly, "You got it... I'll be back in no time."
"Good luck and thank you for helping us. We really do appreciate it, she whispered in your ear.
You gave her one solid nod before stepping towards a gate where the four other Insurgents stood. They all had their weapons strapped on their back, their uniform had a makeshift shield on their chest, arms, and legs.
"Ready, novata?" One of the male Insurgents asked as the other three entered a grey van. You nodded and followed them inside, The gates of the underground system opened, letting the driver drive the van out of the Insurgent camp.
-
"Prepare the anti-aircraft artillery and make sure to track the Insurgents going to the location, i want eyes everywhere, got it?" Yarina stated firmly as she walked around the Insurgent control room where TV's were displaying information about the plane radar as well as a camera following the van you were currently in.
"Yes ma'am, anti-aircraft ready for launch in three... two... one."
-
Leon's held on to one of the seats of the plane as they were met with turbulence. An alarm went off and the lights flashed red inside. Oxygen bags dropped down each isle of seats as the co-pilot spoke, "Everyone take a seat, we're experiencing unexpected movements from land. I repeat-"
The co-pilot got interrupted by the sudden sound of explosion against the plane. One of its wings had been hit by the anti-aircraft artillery. Leon immediately walked towards a window and sat that the wing was destroyed and on fire.
"We need to get off!" He yelled to the other soldiers. Leon walked towards the emergency exit and with brute force, he forced the door open. Wind entered the plane, causing everything to fly out.
"Come on!!" He yelled as he pushed some soldiers out of the door. Parachutes opened as the soldiers started to fall down the sky.
Another bomb hit the airplane, splitting it in half. Other soldiers got sucked out of the plane as Leon held on to the door's handle, The plane shook terribly as the alarm kept on blaring.
Just as Leon was about to jump out, he heard a pained scream of one of the shoulders. He turned his over his shoulder and saw that a female soldier had been stabbed in the abdomen with a metal rod. As she yelled in pain, blood spluttered out of her mouth. Leon let go of one hand from the door's handle and tried to reach the soldier.
The plane had been hit again by another bomb. This time, it caused the entire plane to explode.
-
You were running behind your team as they ran through the forest and towards the meeting location. As the bombs blew off, the ground shook and you turned your head towards the sky.
A plane had been hit and you watched as it exploded. You were able to see how some people jumped out of the plane with their parachutes.
Your heart began to beat faster as you realized how dangerous everything was turning out to be.
"Let's go, we've only got so much time before they call reinforcements," The leader of the team said. The team resumed their path towards the building.
You and the team approached the backside of the building, noticing how it was indeed heavily guarded by soldiers.
"Okay, this is the plan. We've got smoke bombs and hand grenades. We are to only use them when necessary, the point of this mission is to be as stealthy as possible. Everyone got their silencers?"
The team nodded as they clung on to their guns, including you.
The leader gave a solid nod before turning his attention back to the building. With his right hand, he signaled two soldiers off to the right side of the building. He did the same thing with the left side as well. He turned to look at you, "Stay here. Keep an eye out, those Americans could still be alive, and we need someone to signal us out." He handed you a red flare gun, "Remember, only when necessary."
You took the gun and nodded as you tucked it back into one of your pockets on your uniform. "Wait-" You suddenly spoke up, "Yarina wanted me to gather the data, I need to go with you guys."
The leader shook his head no, "No, you'll get yourself killed. Give me the USB and I'll take care of it." He put his hand out.
This was a mission given to you specifically by an ally. But you agreed to it anyway. With a sigh, you pulled out the USB and handed it to him, "Make it quick," you whispered to him.
He nodded and put the USB in his breast pocket. He got up and letf for the building.
The sun was still up and shinning its bright heat down on the island. You turned around and stared out towards the forest to keep watch. Taking your gun from your holster, you held in your hands and strained your ear to listen for any sounds.
-
Leon groaned as he woke up. He lifted himself up slowly from the ground. Slowly opening his eyes, he looked around and saw that he was currently in a forest. With furrowed brows and a confused expression, he stood up and looked around his surroundings. He looked up and sat his parachute stuck on a tree.
Right, his plane got bombed.
The last thing he remembered was a massive explosion and a parachute.
He must've fallen from the plane right before the impact. One step closer to death, he always thought.
Leon huffed and began to walk through the forest, trying to find civilization.
He still had his gun and knife, he checked to make sure.
-
As you waited for your team to finish up, you heard gunshots come from within the building. Your eyes widened and your heartrate increased. They've been found.
Just as you were about to go help them, you heard rustling coming from the forest. You gripped on your gun and aimed it at the rustling bushes.
With a concentrated look, you remained silent and watched attentively as a man appeared from the forest.
-
Leon's eyes burned as he stepped out of the forest and into the bright sunlight. He was too blind in the moment to notice a young girl aiming her weapon at him.
Once his eyes adjusted, his eyes fell on her. He quickly pulled out his own weapon and pointed it at her.
"Put your gun down," He demanded lowly.
-
Your eyes twitched as you gripped the gun tighter, "No."
The man kept his serious face before taking a step towards you. You took a step back in response.
Your attention was directed back to the building as the ground shook from an explosion. The hand grenades...
Without notice, the man ran up to you and kicked your gun away from your hand. You gasped in shock and quickly shielded yourself with your arms.
The man swiped under your feet, causing you to fall down to the floor. He ran up behind you and wrapped his arm around your neck in a headlock position.
Your hands found their way to his forearm as you tried to pry his arm off. This man was strong and muscular and compared to your figure, you were surprised you haven't died from the lack of oxygen.
With a swift motion, you swayed to the side, causing to fall down on the floor. His grasp loosened as you slipped away. You ran towards your gun, you picked it up and kicked his gun away from his reach.
The man groaned in annoyance and looked at you before taking his knife from his sheath. He held it in his hands and began to approach you.
"Don't move or I'll shoot!" You threatened.
He scoffed and narrowed his eyes at you, "You've had plenty of chances to do that, sweetheart."
You mimicked his expression, "Stop or I will."
He stopped walking and stood up straight, staring at you dead in the eyes. He scoffed again, "Go ahead. Try."
He ran up to you with his knife. You barely had enough time to duck away from him, his knife grazing your arm. Causing a wound to open up and bleed. You hissed in pain and glared at him. With your other hand, you aimed the gun at him and pulled the trigger, only to miss the shoot by an inch on his thigh.
"Jesus-" He mumbled as he moved to the side to evade your bullets. He ran up to you again, this time to punch you.
You jumped out of the way and hit him in the abdomen with your foot. He stumbled back but quickly reached for your leg and pulled you down to the floor. Your back hit the grassy floor with a thud as you groaned in pain. He quickly kicked the gun out of your hands and watched as you scrambled to your feet to fight him with your fists.
"You sure you want this, princess?" He raised a brow as he saw your stance. He exhaled through his nose loudly before he also got in a stance. You were relentless, he thought to himself.
You nodded, "I can fight just fine."
"Could've fooled me," he mumbled and began to throw punches at you.
You could only avoid some of them and the ones that you couldn't hurt so much. Just as you were about to launch a punch, the man fell to his knees and to the ground.
You furrowed your brows confused and looked towards the building and saw that the team leader had shot him with a dart gun. The man passed out on the floor unconscious as he succumbed to the sedative.
-
"Madam President, there's been an attack on the American plane. There were no reports of survivors so far," The female assistant said to the president as they stood on the entry of the building.
President Mendez had an angry look but didn't say anything yet. She simply walked back inside the building and motioned for a Pruyanian to walk up to her. She slapped the soldier and gripped his jaw, "Tell the commander that he is responsible for those Americans. If I find that there are no survivors, I will kill everyone in this godforsaken country."
She let go of his jaw and watched as he scurried off to somewhere. Then she turned to look at her assistant, "I want you to put a warning announcement for tonight."
She cleared her throat before continuing, "We will publicly execute anyone who defy me. If anyone is associated with any sort of rebellion, they will be publicly shot."
-
Leon slowly opened his eyes, adjusting to the dark night. It had turned night during the time he'd been asleep. He tried to move but found his wrists tied up to a tree. He looked around and saw that there was a campfire in the middle of the forest.
And then his eyes fell on you. You were sitting in front of the fire, away from the other Insurgents as they were asleep. You kept watch, he thought to himself.
You seemed so focused as you stared down at the fiery orange flames that you didn't seem to notice that the man had woken up. You took your gun and stood up, ready to walk out of the forest. He narrowed his eyes at you as you walked out of the forest and towards the building.
With a heavy sigh, he reached for his hidden pocketknife and began to cut the tie on his wrists. He'd have to give it them, they put up one hell of a fight.
Leon patted his pockets and realized that they had stripped him of all his weapons. He groaned quietly and rolled his head back against the bark of the tree.
-
You walked through the forest as you tried to reach the building once again. This time, you wanted to rescue Victoria- Josue's sister. As you stealthily walked through the forest, you hid behind a bush and watched as more soldiers surrounded the perimeter of the building. There were helicopters flying above with their search lights in lookout for any intruders.
Just as you were about to bounce, the sound of a night announcement interrupted your thoughts and actions. The TV screen on the tall tower turned on and began to broadcast the president.
-
"Dear citizens of Pruye, it has come to my attention that there's been recent violent activity targeting not only your brothers and sisters but also strangers from other allies. We must terminate such behavior and make sure that our country remains peaceful. Those who show resistance and insubordination will be terminated."
Leon's face scrunched up at that announcement, the older Insurgents woke up and stared in horror, "She's going to kill us..." one of them whispered in fear.
It was justifiable to feel scared at the sudden target on your back. It was no longer safe being out in the streets without getting murdered.
-
"But with bad news, comes good news," the president as she had an unsettling smile on her face.
"We've distributed our medicine to the four city states surround our base quarters. We will no longer fall behind to the other countries."
Footages of people appeared on the TV. But they weren't people anymore. They had turned into monsters, flesh eating and violent monsters.
Your eyes widened and your jaw fell slack as you witnessed the way the government had turned some of its civilians into things that were far from human.
-
Leon was just as shock; he immediately recognizes what was going on. The government had given its citizens a mutated branch of the T-Virus under the pretext that it was medicine. And it caused many innocent lives to be turned into B.O.Ws. His expression was one of shock and anger.
The four city states were now contaminated of zombies and B.O.Ws. And he dreaded ever being sent here.
-
You took this opportunity to quickly climb through the window of the building, sneaking inside quietly as you tried to find Victoria. There was no time for grieving, you wanted to save as many lives as possible as well end this government once and for all.
You held your gun up as you quietly walked up the stairs. As you neared the fourth floor, you could hear faint sobbing coming from the end of the hall. There was a door halfway opened that allowed for the sounds to echo through the hall. With slow and quiet steps, you approached the room and peeked through the opening.
Victoria.
You quickly entered the room and lowered your weapon. She had been tied up to a chair as she was covered in blood and sweat. They'd been torturing her and you can see the exhaustion in her eyes.
"Victoria, your brother wanted me to rescue you. He's safe and he's alive," you quickly murmured as you untied her. Her wrists were free and she hugged you tightly. You slowly wrapped your arms around her. Poor girl has been here for god knows how long.
"Let's get you out of here," You pulled back and began to descend down the hall and down the stairs to where you snuck in.
Once you and victoria made it safely outside, you dragged her to the forest where the other Insurgents were currently camping.
-
"Wait... where's Y/n?" one of the Insurgents asked as he looked around and saw that you were gone. He looked over at Leon and walked up to him, scrunching up his shirt as he got right up in his face, "You saw her, didn't you?" the insurgent seethed through gritted teeth.
"I saw the direction she went but not exactly where she went," Leon grumbled under his breath.
The Insurgent was about to punch Leon until rustling from the forest began to sound all throughout. The insurgents drew their weapons but then lowered them as they saw you run back to them with Victoria.
"Vic?" One of the female insurgents asked, "We thought you were dead-"
"I'm okay," she replied weakly, "She saved me," Victoria pointed to you and you gave the other Insurgents a curt nod.
"I hate ruining special moments like this but we need to leave, they'll send a search party for us. Let’s go now!” The team leader said as he began to walk back towards where they had parked the van.
“Wait, what about the American?” They all turned to look at Leon who was still tied up on the tree.
“We take him back to base, he’ll be our key to President Mendez.”
Two insurgents nodded and began to untie Leon and drag him behind the leader. You and Victoria walked behind them as you tried to comfort her.
-
Once you all had reached the van, you entered the backseat with Victoria next to you and the American in front of you. You kept a close eye on Victoria as she seemed to not be doing too well.
“She’s got a wound on her arm,” the American mumbled as he looked at you. You furrowed your brows and looked back at Victoria’s arm.
He was right. She’d been bleeding. You took a medkit from the van and began to treat her wound as best as you could, all while getting flashbacks of Esme and how you couldn’t save her.
But now wasn’t the time to think back on everything. Right now what mattered the most was making sure Victoria and the rest of the team made it back to La Sénte.
You leaned back against the wall of the van, staring right at the American in front of you.
He stared right back at you.
“So…” he started quietly, “What‘s your name?”
You scoffed and crossed your arms above your chest, “Why do you want to know?”
“Well, y’know, since you guys are taking me captive and are planning to use for whatever reason. I thought I’d at least have some info on you guys,” he replied as I stared at you with a slight smirk.
You furrowed your brows and sighed, “My name’s Y/n L/n, yours?”
“Leon S. Kennedy,” he nodded once at you before looking at Victoria.
“You said you saved her?” He looked back at you with a raised brow, to which you nodded.
Hu hummed lowly in response before letting the silence overtake the atmosphere.
This was going to be a long ride.

*********
TWO.
Aizawa has always had trouble sleeping.
Whether it be because of stress over his students, haunted memories of villain attacks, or the memory of his beloved childhood friend Oboro.
But tonight, and for the past few nights since September when the school year began, his sleep troubles can be contributed to you and your damn cute ass self.
“Fuck,” he grumbles, practically slamming his hand down on his phone to stop the sound of ocean waves.
This usually does wonders to help him sleep, but all he’s been envisioning since he laid his head down to sleep hours ago is fucking you on an island, your luscious thighs spread and cute little tummy exposed as his dick strokes the inside of your wet, tight, utterly amazing pussy, your cute little ears and tail twitching as he strokes those with his hands, making you dumb with the pleasure.
“Fuck!” He growls, frustrated. He sits up in his bed, soaked in sweat despite the cool spring air coming through the window to his apartment. He looks at the clock: 12:23 AM. At this rate, he’ll be up until 6. Thank God it’s the weekend though.
But sleep is very important to Aizawa. He needs it to function, which is especially needed to deal with the public, his coworkers, and his snot-nosed students. He can’t do that if he’s here lying awake in bed, wondering why he’s still alone and not in your bed instead.
So what does he do when you’re running through his mind like this? He takes a walk.
He rises from his messy bed with the covers askew, clad in his briefs. He walks over to his clothes closet where he changes into a simple, black tracksuit. He doesn’t wear his usual jumpsuit for fear of dirtying it up, but he does pack his scarves and goggles since, as Mic put it, “a hero’s job is never done”.
After gathering his phone and keys, he meanders in his living room for a while, eyeing the closed bedroom door covered in painted pink flowers and cats that Mirio insisted on doing for his “little buddy” when they set up her bedroom. That was a year ago. How time flies when you’re a single dad, a professor, and a pro hero at the same time.
Aizawa smiles at the door before locking up his apartment and heading down the quiet hall to the elevator to take him downstairs. Once there, he swipes himself out with a key card given to all UA staff to get in and out of campus buildings and heads out into the quiet, spring night.
Before he heads off on his walk, he plugs his AirPods into his ears and chooses his R&B playlist. He begins nodding along to Troop’s “All I Do Is Think of You” as he begins to walk… probably not the right song choice because he instantly begins to think of you.
The campus is quiet. All are either asleep or out in the city, enjoying this nice Friday night. Spring is in full bloom, though the early chill is still in the air and the cherry blossoms that surround the area are still budding.
He walks along the walkway leading towards one of the many entrances to the UA campus, walking away from the apartment complex that houses many of UA’s teachers and staff.
Including you. He hasn’t seen you much around the building since you live on different floors and have such different schedules, but while in school, he runs into you in the elevator, stairwell, or hallway from time to time.
And each and every time, he’s dumbfounded by your attractiveness. His mouth waters every time he gets a look at your plump lips as they form the words “good morning” and your pretty, brown eyes he wants to stare into forever. Not to mention your gorgeous skin his fingers itch to feel, but not as much as they do your ears and tail that, unfortunately for him, go along with your quirk.
Goddamn, your ears and tail! He has to duck into empty classrooms every time he sees you down the hall because his hands start aching to stroke the adorable little things coated in fine, black fur.
His cock takes the worst of it though. It seems to have a mind of its own that you control. Every time he gets a glance at you in some cute little skirt with your ears relaxed as you sit in your office, he’s so tempted to find a nice, quiet place somewhere and bust several nuts at the thought of you…and he has.
At first, he wasn’t sure how he felt about you working here because of your cat quirk. Not because he disliked any person with an animal quirk (he isn't a prejudiced dick), but because you were so goddamn cute and knew he would never be able to focus. Throw in your compassion for the UA kids, your sweet and genuine personality, great taste in fashion, and your general niceness, and he’s ready to jump you.
He’s a fucking mess for you. Why the fuck did God or your parents’ genes have to make you so goddamn cute, pretty, and nice?
He’d never tell you any of this though. He knows logically, that someone as pretty and as sweet as you would never return the same feelings to someone as awkward and as rough around the edges as him. You deserve someone who doesn’t scurry off when they see you and isn’t a complete introvert. Someone who doesn’t have secrets or a chip on their shoulder. You deserve so much better.
But fuck, does Aizawa want to be that “better”. He wants to be your man so bad, he can barely think straight. But that’s all it can be: want. Nothing more.
“Nothing more,” he whispers to himself, his breath fogging slightly in the chilled air.
As if validating the state of his complicated life, his phone begins to go off. He checks the caller ID, finding the number of the MPD aka the Musutafu Police Department hitting him up. Principal Nezu cut a deal with the chief a year ago for pro teachers to volunteer to do nightly patrols to clean up on street crime around campus and in the city. Aizawa volunteered since he’s got nothing else better to do.
Plus, kicking some ass certainly beats grading papers and stroking his dick nonstop at the thought of you. “You rang, chief?” he answers.
“Good, you picked up,” the chief sighs in relief. “Sorry to bother you so late. Were you sleep?”
Aizawa nearly laughs. “Nope, you caught me at a good time. What’s up?”
The chief gives him the rundown: “We just got a report in from an overnight staff member about a robbery at the International Pro Hero Museum. According to him, there are four individuals in black jumpsuits and ski masks who broke into the place and took the overnight staff hostage. The one who put in the report managed to escape and called 911, but these individuals have their own quirks they’re using to their advantage to rob the place.”
“Did the staff member mention anything about what kind of quirks they have?” Aizawa asks, switching into gear. The wheels in his mind begin turning, already analyzing the situation.
The chief lets out another exasperated sigh, which is a no. “None at all, so just be careful, Eraserhead. We know you’re highly skilled in this department, but it doesn’t hurt to say it.”
Aizawa smirks to himself, already moving behind a building to change. “Thanks, but I think I’ve got this,” he chuckles. “I’ll be right there.”
After hanging up, he immediately straps on his goggles and winds his scarves around his neck. Without another thought, he shoots one arm out and loops his scarf around a street lamp before latching on and leaping onto it.
He does this with every street lamp, traffic light, and building he sees, the world darkened by his goggles. He likes doing nighttime missions because he’s not noticed nearly as much as in daylight, but he gets the occasional “Hey, it’s Eraserhead!” yelled at him from a window or a car. He usually spares a wave or a nod, but this time, he’s too focused on his mission to pretend to like the attention.
He manages to make it to the museum quicker than he thought, but he doesn’t immediately act. He first crouches on the neighboring building, looking out at the museum. He doesn’t see a vehicle of any sort, which means the robbers came on foot. What he does see, however, is a broken window. At least they were smart to not try to break through the front door, meaning there is also an alarm that they probably disabled.
After analyzing the distance from the building he’s perched on to the museum, Aizawa wraps his scarf around a nearby tree and swings from the branch, like Tarzan. Then he latches himself onto the branch and, after securing his goggles, leaps from the tree and through the open window.
He lands perfectly on his knees, using a hand to steady himself on the ground into what Mic calls “a superhero landing”. He then asses his new environment: a dark storage room filled with dusty supplies, hero posters, and a group of museum staff gagged and bound against the wall. The hostages.
He quickly springs into action to help them, taking the makeshift rope and gags off of them. As he does, he looks down and finds tiny thorns in his gloves that protrude from the textured, green rope that tightly bound the hostages together. ‘Vines,’ he realizes.
“It’s Eraserhead!” one of the hostages shouts in glee. Another, wearing a janitor's uniform, hushes him.
“Hush, stupid!” he whispers harshly. “They might come back for us!”
Aizawa helps each of them stand on their feet. “It’s alright, I’m here to help,” he calmly says. “How did you all get here?”
“Those four fuckers put us in here!” the janitor angrily replies. “I was just cleaning the floor in time for tomorrow’s shift and next thing I knew, I was being shoved to the ground and tied up in these damn vines.”
He kicks at the vines that lie on the ground. Aizawa stares at them questionably. “So one of them has a plant quirk,” he realizes. “Anybody know about the other three?”
Another hostage–a young security guard–steps forward. “One of them has webbed feet and can walk on walls,” he answers. “He jumped on my back and attacked me. Scared the shit outta me.” A sudden crash pierces the air, making the hostages freeze in fear. Aizawa quickly gears into action.
“Nobody move from this spot,” he orders firmly. “I’ll come back for all of you. The police are on their way.” Before anyone can say anything more, he quickly leaves the storage room and slinks through the dark museum as quietly as possible.
Each room he stalks through is dedicated to its own hero according to each part of the world as well as dark and empty. Nothing seems out of place until he makes it to the front of the museum where he finds broken glass littering the tiled floors. Warning signals blare in his head, his body warm with adrenaline as he carefully walks on the glass, using the fox walk technique.
His eyes trail over the glass to the broken case of All Might’s first hero outfit. Obviously, the robbers were trying to snatch it. What he doesn’t expect is to see three of them tied together near the door, back to back and unconscious. “What the fuck?” he whispers in bewilderment.
He gets a little closer and inspects the work: they are wrapped in one of the robber’s own vines with bruises and black eyes ruining their faces and slight tears in their black clothes. Someone seriously fucked these guys up.
‘But who?’ he thinks, confused. ‘Who the hell was here before me?’
He suddenly freezes, sensing something. Something that feels like danger according to his twirling gut.
With a deep inhale, he shoots his hand out to the right, earning a strangled gasp in response. He turns, finding a kid with unruly, burgundy hair and black clothes in his grasp, his bare, webbed feet dangling like a rag doll.
He gives Aizawa a toothy grin. “Eraserhead,” he croons. “I should’ve known you bein’ an old fart wouldn’t have fucked with your sense of hearing.”
Aizawa glares at the kid. “First of all, I’m thirty-one,” he deadpans. “Second, what are you doin’ with these fools? Shouldn’t you be at home sleep, kid?”
The kid’s wolfish grin drops, replaced with a look of rage. “Don’t call me that!” he snarls, wriggling around in Aizawa’s tight hold. “I’m not a fuckin’ kid! And I do what I want!”
Aizawa tightens his grip on the kid. “Jeez, anger issues much?” he huffs. “Something tells me your dad never spanked you when you were younger.” He tries to get a look at the kid’s face, preparing to wipe his quirk for a few hours so he’s easier to handle.
The kid surprises him by looking right at him suddenly. “What, you gonna do it for me?” he taunts before giving him a smile. “You could try!”
Suddenly, he pulls out a canister ball and slams it against the ground, causing a burst of smoke to explode from it. Aizawa drops the kid and begins to cough as the smoke fills his lungs, his vision now obscured by the fog. He tries to look for the kid, tapping into his senses to find him. When the smoke finally clears, the kid is gone.
“Hey, old man!” someone shouts from the ceiling. Aizawa looks up and finds the kid hanging from the ceiling with his webbed feet. “Shit!” he growls, but he’s not quick enough. The kid jumps from the ceiling with a shout and lands on Aizawa’s shoulders.
“Perfect distraction,” he snickers. “Now you can say this “kid” is the reason to meet your end. Goodnight, Eraserhead.”
Before Aizawa can try to rip him off, the kid wraps his arms and legs around his neck and begins to squeeze hard. Suddenly, Aizawa can’t breathe. He grunts, trying in vain to rip the kid off of him, but he has a fucking koala grip on him.
‘Air,’ Aizawa thinks. ‘I…need…air!’ He drops to his knees, desperate to get some air in his burning lungs.
But the kid just keeps on squeezing, desperate to kill the pro. Aizawa can feel his eyes fluttering shut, the darkness beginning to eat at his vision.
Suddenly, the strangling sensation stops and the kid lets out a grunt as he falls from Aizawa’s back. Aizawa sputters and coughs, gulping down as much air as possible. “That could’ve ended very badly,” an unfamiliar voice says behind him.
He turns, finding someone equally as unfamiliar to him. She stands above the now-unconscious kid, an All Might paperweight from the museum’s gift shop in her hand.
Aizawa’s eyes trail over her form, beginning at her black knee-high boots to her black bodysuit, the leather, and slashes of glittered silver glinting in the flashing lights overhead. The black mask she wears over her head obscures the top half of her face from him, only showing him her nose and her glossy, plump lips where he just sees two fangs jutting out. Her braids hang at her waist where her hands are, placed confidently on her hips.
Aizawa notices the same glittering, claw-like slashes there too along with some across her thighs he knows could crush someone’s head.
He wouldn’t mind being in between them himself.
He continues to gape at her for a moment, wondering where the fuck she came from. “You alright?” she asks, concern in her voice. She puts a gloved hand out to him where he can see long, makeshift claws attached to the tips of her fingers. Snapping back to reality, he refuses her hand.
“I’m fine,” he grumbles, standing. “Who the fuck are you?”
The stranger blinks at him with those yellow, feline-like eyes. “Well, nice to meet you too,” she scoffs. “I thought you would’ve already seen me in the newspapers, but I suppose cameras can only work so well in the dark.” She juts a hand out, giving him a fanged smile. “Night Claw. Nice to meet you, Eraserhead.”
Aizawa blinks at her. Her name sounds familiar to him. “You know me?” he questions, raising a brow at her. Night Claw giggles, moving her braids behind her shoulder. “You’re kiddin’, right? Anyone who’s anyone knows you.”
His eyes trail up to her mask, noticing the two pointed ears poking out of it. Now he knows why her name sounded so familiar. “I know you too,” he says, earning a wide-eyed stare from her. “You’re the new vigilante who’s been going around at night fighting street crime. I’ve seen your name pop up on Twitter.”
Night Claw grins with pride. “I’m her, exactly,” she chirps. “I was around, so I figured I’d stroll the streets. Then I came across the museum and saw them tryna make a hustle out of a steal.”
She nods at the kid and his three partners. “The hostages okay?” she asks worriedly. “I couldn’t get to ‘em fast enough. Needed to make sure these dumbfucks didn’t steal nothin’ else.”
“Yeah,” he grumbles, still sizing her up. Who is this girl? Where did she come from? “You know, I would’ve handled that myself. And them.” He nods at the robbers.
Night Claw just laughs, irritating him. “Oh, yeah,” she replies sarcastically, “‘cause it looked like you were doin’ a great job, to begin with. Ya know, being that I saved your narrow behind, I think I’m deserving of a thank you.” She crosses her arms over her ample chest that Aizawa has to force himself to look away from.
Aizawa clenches his fists, feeling incredibly pissed that she’s mocking him and that she ruined his mission. This was his arrest, not hers. And he certainly didn’t need any help from someone who isn’t even an official hero. He despises nothing more than people who feel like just because they have quirks, they have every right to become a hero without putting in the blood, sweat, and tears to do so.
But he doesn’t say all that. He only looks at the bright-eyed vigilante and sucks his teeth at her. “You’re not gettin’ one,” he growls. “And my ass isn’t narrow.”
Night Claw just smiles at him, almost taunting him. “I’m guessin’ you don’t have a license for this?” he asks, shoving his hands in his pockets. Night Claw’s smile doesn’t falter. “A girl never tells her secrets,” she hums, which he takes as a no.
“You know, I have every reason to take you into custody and hand you over to the cops for impersonating a hero,” he cooly states, fixing the vigilante with a hard stare. But even with the possibility of going to jail, Night Claw’s confidence never wavers.
She instead raises her chin and looks at him through the eye slits of her mask. “Are you though?” she purrs.
The air around them grows tense and thicker than fog. Before either of them can say anything more, the sound of police sirens begins to fill the air. Night Claw looks startled all of a sudden, but quickly bounces back and gives Aizawa a playful smile. “Guess that’s my cue to leave,” she announces briskly. “They’re all yours.”
Aizawa watches in silence as the vigilante turns towards the front doors of the museum, her ass looking way too good in her bodysuit. As if forcing him to be a good person, his throat burns from the kid’s attempt on his life. “Hey, Night Claw,” he says in his deep, baritone voice.
Night Claw stops and turns to him, the moonlight illuminating her skin and braids, making them appear like twined silver. Aizawa swallows down the strange lump in his throat at the sight of her. “Nice boots,” he mutters.
She gives him a joyful smile. “You’re welcome,” she giggles. “I’ll be seein’ you around, Eraser.”
Then, without another word, she struts out of the museum and into the darkness, leaving Eraserhead alone, confused, and very, very aroused.

Glitch into the Hufflverse Chapter 5: Septnautical
Read Swapboys | Read Crystal’s AUs | Read Septnautical
Read SITCV | Read SATCV | GITHV Masterpost
Diving under the water they see the murky yellow water under the aurora and the shapes of the hybrids swimming through it. Mer Jackie waves and then loops around to catch up with Henrik.
As they all swim after them, the water quickly starts to transition towards more of a green, rough rocks jutting out from the sea floor. Then, it turns a brilliant bright blue, the sun shining dream-like through the surface of the waves above.
Jackie and JJ both fumble for a while as they swim. This isn't like swimming as a person at all. Jackie figures it out first, moving his tail up and down. JJ takes a bit longer, but soon realizes how he has to use his new wings to help him glide along. It's a strange arms-out position.
Schneep, unfortunately, struggles for a while. His soul sensing abilities don't extend to all animals, only the bigger or smarter ones. And so, since there are a lot of alien fish in this alien ocean, he keeps bumping into them and slowing down. Eventually, JJ doubles back, reaching out and offering his arm. Schneep finds it and quickly clings onto JJ, looking a bit upset about how he can't swim as well as the others yet.
As they swim Henrik starts to explain, "Ah... we are obviously not fully human. But you cannot be... naturally born as this. And Alterra is a large company who has been given free reign to... experiment on this planet. And that is how... we all came to be. ...to them, we are not even known by our names. We all chose these names... but we are only letters and numbers to them- a result to be studied. They know me as... SH-003. The... third of the hybrids to be created."
Alt feels dread hit him like a punch in the gut. "... you all are... experiments...?" He asks quietly.
Mer-Jackie nods and holds his arms. "Yeah... I'm- uhhh RL-006-! But, we don't usually use those. Feels icky."
JJ sighs. He knew it wasn't good.
"Don't worry, if you do not like those titles, we will not use them," Schneep says.
"Yeah, I'd hate to call someone something that makes them feel icky," Jackie adds. "Uh... I'm uh... s-sorry if..." He clears his throat. "Well, I'm glad you were able to find your names."
"How many of you are there? If Jackie is six and he mentioned two others younger than him... eight?" Schneep is more talking to himself than anyone else.
"Oh! There's 7 actually- that fact makes it confusing." Reaper Jackie laughs, "Actually i think... right after I was born I... I technically died? But me and Marv were the only ones born outside of eggs and we were ready at around the same time so... I think putting us together saved me somehow?" He shrugs, "That's what Zara told me a PDA file said about me and him. But- that's why I'm technically older but he's the fifth- WH-005. The last one is Jamie- he's CH-007."
Henrik nods as if to confirm this. "Yes and other than them and me. There is RR-001, Chase- SE-002, Jack..." Henrik seems to linger on Jack's name before moving forward, "And... my near twin, Anti, SD-004."
“Died?" Jackie blinks, surprised. "I'm guessing you don't remember that. I hope you don't." He shakes his head. "I, uh... know someone named Marvin, too... But I can't imagine being paired with him." He hides a shudder.
"I can picture it all too well," Schneep mutters.
Reaper Jackie laughs, "Nah I don't remember- Marvin doesn't either! We were like... just a few days old i think." He swims back to look at Jackie and tilts his head at him. "Huh? Why...? Is your Marvin mean? ... I mean mine can be too but- I'm also kinda mean sometimes." He bares his teeth in a sharp grin and flexes his mandibles. "Then again I'm biased~ he's my twin!"
'You are not actually twins, Jackie." Henrik chuckles.
"It's close enough!" Mer-Jackie argues.
Jackie shakes his head. "The Marvin I know... isn't a good person..." he says slowly. "It's a long story." He wishes he could put his hoodie on over his new mandibles.
"What do all those Letters mean?" Bro asks, "I get the numbers just... the letters seem weird."
Henrik chuckles, "Those let the scientists know what species of hybrid we are. Like me- SH, stands for Stalker Hybrid."
"And I'm Reaper Levithian, RL!" Reaper Jackie adds with a grin, easily swimming circles around the others.
"You will understand better when you meet the rest." Henrik smirks. "Since it seems you are all not familiar with the fauna here."
"yeah- totally in the dark," Alt mutters. "... they're neat though I... I'd love to learn more."
JJ nods slowly. I vaguely remember hearing some of these names from my Anti, he says. While he uses his arms to sign, Schneep transfers his grip to JJ's waist, holding on via tendrils.
Mer-Jackie bllinks at JJ's signs and then looks to Alt. "What did mustache guy say?"
Alt laughs, "He said his friend Anti told him some of those names."
"Oh yeah! Cuz they said it was a game! Man- that's weird. Is it a naming game? Like- name all the fauna? That's nooo fun- that sounds like white suits drills." The reaper grumbles.
JJ chuckles at being called mustache man. I wish I had a spell that could let everyone understand me... but at least one person can.
"It is much more helpful than having someone translate for me," Schneep says. "Or the morse code system me and my JJ use. It is just a shame we found a wor—we found somewhere where most people do not know."
“I have a spell- but it’s still kinda iffy on non- spoken languages,” Alt sighs.
“It’s just that your signs are weird! But also cuz no one really uses them here much- ‘Cept Jamie now. And like- we didn’t really know how to read for a while so learning stuff like that is hard!” Mer Jackie chuckles.
“Imagine having to learn to read with your fingers," Schneep says. "I'm sure sign language is easier."
JJ looks back at him and frowns. Braille is an alphabet. BSL has individual words.
Schneep laughs. "You are right, you are right."
“We all have our struggles Schneep,” Alt laughs.
As they're swimming, they're now in a more colorful patch of ocean. Large tunnels of coral and weird looping structures of rocks. Colorful rays with bright blue and orange swim by, singing a sweet melody. The ocean is alive with schools of fish and colorful plumes of plant life.
JJ looks around with wide eyes. This place is beautiful! He waves at the rays as they swim by. Jackie can't help but duck through some of the rock loops.
The hybrids slow down a bit as the others take in the sea. Henrik smiles. "It is beautiful out here, is it not?"
"The shallows is one of the prettiest places! That's why our cove is over here! But also cuz it's the safest place!" Mer Jackie explains.
Bro sees Jackie swimming through some of the loops and laughs, trying it out himself. Man- it feels just like flying when he swims- just a bit more muscle work. Alt laughs at their antics.
"It is just a bit further to the forest," Henrik calls, spurring forward. "Careful you keep up- we have been building up our camouflage so you could get lost!"
The group speeds up as Henrik says to. Schneep bats angrily at the kelp strands as they pass. He makes a note to himself: never travel through forests. He doesn't want to hit his head on low-hanging branches. JJ squeezes his hand, reassuring him that he's there.
Henrik has taken to the kelp forest with ease- this is clearly his element and he has the way memorized well. They start to go a bit lower into the tall flowing strands of thick kelp. There’s even bundles of glowing seeds clustered together to make patches of bright light. Which helps since the ocean seems a bit… darker here amongst the swaying fronds.
Eventually they seem to come across a hole amongst the rocks and kelp and in it, surrounded by tall rocks is a white base. Most of it is covered in windows and… tubes? But there are some parts hidden amongst the twisted maze of hallways and rooms.
“Woahhh!” Bro laughs, “That’s so cool!”
Henrik grins. “Welcome to the Ocean’s Arms.”
"Whoa!" Jackie gasps. "Look at that scifi shit!"
JJ stares up in awe. His eyes are practically sparkling.
Schneep tilts his head to the side. He can sense nearby human souls... though none seem familiar. "What is it like?"
"Oh—well it's all white and glass," Jackie says. "Made of tube and round rooms—very round in general. It's all twisting and stuff."
"Ooooo. Sounds very nice." Schneep grins.
After Schneep is done getting the lay of the land- a black and white bundle speeds up and suddenly tackles mer-Jackie in a big tentacle-y hug. The reaper laughs and pats the new tinier merman that has attached himself to him. “Hi Jamie! We brought some new friends- you wanna meet them?”
A head of teal hair perks up away from Jackie’s chest and looks at the others. He has the same mustache as JJ’s except less maintained. He has black and white dots all over his face like freckles except one large patch that covers his left eye. And instead of the long singular tails the rest of the boys have- this tiny merman has 5 black and white spotted tentacles. He gasps quietly at seeing the others and then shakes mer-Jackie’s arm, pointing wildly.
Mer-Jackie laughs. “Yes I see them! Say hi! Show off your new thingy!”
Jamie nods and swims up closer to the others. Now that they are closer- it seems like he’s wearing… gloves of some kind? But with strange robotic-like finger attachments on the outside. He taps on a bag he has on his side and a strange robotic fish swims out, its body mostly consisting of a green and blue eye. Jamie makes a show of coughing in a somewhat dramatic manner like he’s gonna speak before- he starts to sign. And as he does- sound comes from the fish that sounds exactly like JJ from the few things they’ve heard him talk.
“Hello! I am Jamie! I’m still learning this so- forgive me if I am slow. My friend Ollie is teaching me trans-universal sign!” he beams once he’s done, flicking and swirling his tails, almost like a happy dance.
"Oh!" Jackie gasps. "Ohhhh that's so cool! Gloves that like—like translate sign language! That's so cool!"
JJ laughs. It would definitely be helpful—though it seems like sign language here is different.
"Yeah, no wonder they were calling BSL weird," Jackie agrees. "Anyway—it's nice to meet you, Jamie! You're like—some kind of black-and-white speckled octopus—pentapus? Cause there are only five tentacles?" He laughs and shakes his head. "This place is crazy."
Jamie tilts his head to the side. “What’s an octopus?” He whispers in a very quiet voice.
“Yeah or a pentapus- the fuck is that?” Reaper Jackie asks.
“Uh- creatures from our world.” Alt explains, “They’re helping us… take all this in better.”
“A pentapus isn’t even real,” Jackie laughs. “That was a joke.”
“Ah well here- he’s a cuddlefish!” Mer-Jackie grins. Jamie smiles shyly and twists his tails again.
"We should introduce ourselves," Schneep says. "Though... if you are anything like your brothers here, you will find it strange. My name is Schneep, and this is JJ—"
JJ waves.
"—and Jackie—"
"Hey!" Jackie grins.
"—and Alt and Chase."
Alt gives a two fingered salute to his name and Bro grins. “Yo! Nice to meet ya!”
Jamie blinks at all of them before pointing at the others and looking back to Henrik and mer-Jackie. “…they have your names.”
“Yes-“ Henrik nods.
“They look like you too!” Jamie tries to say a bit louder.
“Kinda freaky isn’t it?” Reaper Jackie laughs.
“Freaky? I can imagine,” Schneep says, amused.
Jamie swims up so he’s face to face with JJ. He blinks big blue eyes at him and tilts his head curiously. He signs and the robot fish says “You look like me! JJ… I like that!” Jamie smiles wide.
JJ blinks, then nods excitedly, matching Jamie’s enthusiasm. “I do look like you!” He says—though he then coughs and rubs his throat. Probably best to avoid that for a while.
Jamie’s expression turns into one of my sympathy and he floats towards JJ and lightly touches his neck. “…hurts?” He asks quietly. He then touches his own neck and nods like he relates. JJ can see a bit of scarring there.
JJ nods back, giving Jamie a small smile. He hopes the understanding comes across.
Then, Jamie looks at Alt and Bro. He points at Bro. “…Chase-“ then at Alt, “Anti!”
Alt chuckles, “That’s one of my names yeah- but only Chase calls me that. You all can stick to calling me Alt.”
Jamie looks back at the hybrids and signs, “Anti came back here earlier. He looked mad. Said something about freaky new humans.”
“Oh? Did you see where he went?” Henrik asks.
“He went to go see Jack.”
“Oh. Well um…” Jackie squirms slightly, tail flicking. “We… might know something about those ‘freaky new humans’.”
“Surprise! It is us.” Schneep waves. “You are not going to believe hearing that, but it is true. You can ask your Jackie and Schneep.”
Jamie then blinks and looks at all the others and then mer-Jackie and Henrik. They laugh.
“Strange is it not? They have uh… magic I guess. To turn from human to hybrid.” Henrik says.
Jamie’s eyes sparkle with wonder as he swims excitedly all around the others and studies all their tails.
Jackie blinks. “…Jack, huh? He flipped out about him earlier. Sensitive subject, I take it.”
Jamie deflates as Jack is brought up. He looks back to his brothers as if asking for permission.
Reaper Jackie sighs “…we might as well tell them.”
Jamie looks back at the others and signs slowly, “Our older brother Jack is… asleep. He has been for a long time. The white suits did something to him and… Anti was used by Alterra to protect him… as a weapon. But, he still loves Jack so much- we all do. It makes us sad that he is still asleep.”
Bro’s eyes widen, “…woah that’s… that’s insane.”
Alt feels a bit in his stomach. “Anti.. he was used as a weapon…? How?”
The merboys all look a bit uncomfortable. Finally reaper Jackie says “… mind control. They erased Anti’s memories of us and put these weird chips in his ears that made him obey them. But he’s- he’s better now! We saved him from that.”
“Oh,” Jackie says quietly. “I-I’m um… I’m sorry about your brother.”
“Fucking mind control,” Schneep mutters. “I have dealt with a…similar situation with a friend of mine.”
JJ sighs. He nods. Me too. We’ve all had to deal with that in my home.
“Lotsa fucking mind control out there, isn’t there?” Jackie says.
Alt looks angry at hearing what happened to his counterpart, his tail flickering and a few zaps of electricity coming off him. Bro gets zapped and he yelps. “Ow Alt! careful!”
Alt blinks and then looks at his fins and tries to shake out the electricity. “ah sorry…”
“I-it is good that you are all past that, though,” Schneep says, smiling a little. “I suppose that makes sense why Anti was not trusting of us.”
Jackie pauses for a moment, giving the news the respect it deserves before moving on. “Well. Uh… This is where you guys live, then?” Jackie says, gesturing at the base. “Cool. I’m guessing you guys can’t actually go inside. Cause like… you’d need legs and stuff. But this is where those Ocean’s Arms guys live? They’re, uh… your friends?”
Mer-Jackie laughs, “We don’t live here! Our family has a cave together in the shallows! But, Henrik stays here mostly- he has a neat little cave he made for himself to hide all his scrap!”
Henrik blushes a little and flicks his tail. “… we all spilt up for a bit but we are… coming back together.”
Jamie smiles, “yes the base has our friends! The Ocean’s Arms saved my brothers from lots of things so now they make it so we feel safe here. They take care of Jack and! They made it so we can travel inside- in fact I think Marvin, Chase and Anti are inside if you’d like to meet them!”
“Coming back together, huh?” Jackie repeats. For a moment, he looks thoughtful. Then he shakes his head and smiles at the hybrids. “Yeah, we can go meet them.”
JJ nods excitedly. He wonders what the others will look like! The fish seem to have some crazy variations here!
Schneep chuckles. “I am glad of that. Everyone should have a place where they feel safe. We would love to meet your brothers. Ah, how do we get in?”
Reaper Jackie grins and flicks his tail. "Just follow us!" He dives down towards the base with Henrik and Jamie following closely after him. Alt and Bro follow after them.
Jackie quickly chases after the rest of the group, while JJ and Schneep are a bit slower.
As they approach the base, they suddenly notice the tubes have a couple entrances into the water, which the merboys slip easily inside. Alt looks a bit apprehensive about going inside but Bro helps him in.
"... these are a bit tight..." Alt mutters.
Henrik laughs, " A bit- you get used to them. These designs were made for tinier fish but they make it work!"
"Honestly I prefer this," Schneep mutters. "Less options for places to go--and nowhere for the fish to jump out at me—"
JJ laughs. You weren't hurt by running into all those fish, were you?
"I think the fish were more hurt, actually."
Jackie taps the tube walls as they go along—sometimes unintentionally hitting them with his mandibles. He wonders if people can hear that on the other side.
They swim for a bit in dizzying circles before stopping inside a larger aquarium tank that flanks an inner most hallway. There is another hybrid with bright yellow green hair, a large blue speckled tail with bright orange fins and even orange appendages that stick out from his back. He also has wings like JJ's attached to his arms with bright blue edges. He seems to be sitting in the sand, talking animatedly to... a couple kids?
Jamie swims over first and tackle hugs the new hybrid. He yelps in surprise and then laughs, hugging him back. "Oh hi Jamie! The kids were wondering where you went!"
Jamie beams and waves at the kids. There's a tiny brunette boy with- what looks like a prosthetic leg. And a tinier blonde girl with her hair in pig tails. And she's holding an almost holographic looking device in her hands. When she sees Jamie she lights up and starts rapidly typing on the pad. A robotic voice calls out, "Hello Jamie! Welcome back!" Jamie giggles and then tugs on the hybrid's arm to try to get him to get up. The older hybrid laughs, "What's got your tails twisted, Jay??"
The hybrid then looks up at the approaching group of new hybirds and freezes. Especially as he meets Bro's eyes. "oh... woah..."
The little boy gasps, "More hybrids?! I-I didn't know they were more!"
Mer Jackie laughs, "They're... kinda new? But also- kinda human? It's... super weird."
Henrik smiles, "Everyone, this is Chase. Our eldest brother."
Chase spurs up to look at the others higher in the water. "Uh... h-hello..." He stares at them apprehensively and a bit guarded, pushing Jamie behind him. The smaller merman huffs a bit. "Who... are all of you exactly...?"
"Uh... hi." Jackie waves a little at the kids. "And... hello to you, Chase."
JJ also waves, much more enthusiastically. How cute! The friendly blonde girl sort of reminds him of his Jackie's daughter—though they look nothing alike.
"This is going to sound very unbelievable," Schneep says. "But we have the same names as your group. I am Schneep, for example."
"And I'm Jackie," Jackie says. "This is JJ, Chase, and Anti—but he prefers Alt."
"You sound a bit nervous," Schneep mutters. "I... suppose that is understandable. But we are not here to do anything. It is a long story, how we even ended up here."
Bro waves awkwardly, "Uh yeah I... I'm also Chase..."
Chase stares at his copy. "...you look just like me..."
"Uh... yeah." Bro agrees. "Even got the same hair~"
Chase's eyes narrow and he bares surprisingly sharp teeth at the others, eyes flitting around a bit wildly. "S-So what is this? Is this a trick from Alterra?! D-Did they make you all t-to replace us?"
"H-Hey Chase calm down bro! I-It's not like that!" Reaper Jackie tries to say.
Jackie holds his arms up, showing that he has no intent to harm though—though he's aware that it might look like he's concealing something inside their bundle of clothes. "We're really not here to hurt you. We've never even heard of Alterra before we arrived here!"
"Y-Yes they are... they are human, but they are not Alterran!" Henrik adds.
Chase quiets down but still seems defensive. "...where did you all come from then? W-Why are you hybrids-"
Alt swims a bit forward, "Um... I know it doesn't make much sense to you but... I'm a magician! I can cause... strange things to happen by just- thinking about it and I... I knew a way to let us come underwater since there wasn't much for us on land."
"and if they are lost... I think Danan and Zara can help them find a way back to where they are from," Henrik adds.
Chase hums in thought, still warily looking at Bro but seems to relax a bit. "... okay uh... w-welcome then..." Jamie swims up and hugs Chase's middle, both to show the others he means no harm and to comfort Chase.
"Thank you for the welcome." Schneep smiles in Chase's direction. "It is nice to hear. Things were very confusing back when your brothers first met us. Hopefully we can take care of things quickly."
JJ nods. It's good to meet you—even if I know it might be confusing.
"JJ says it's good to meet you, even though it's probably confusing," Jackie relays.
Bro tries to smile encouragingly at Chase.
Chase seems to fully take in the way JJ signs and looks at Jamie behind him. "... he does the hand thing that Ollie taught you." Jamie nods excitedly. Chase seems to hum and then looks back at JJ. "... Henrik and another blue suit made the robot that Jamie is using to talk... maybe they can make one for you too? Just so we can understand you..."
Alt's eyes sparkle as he looks to Henrik, "You made that robot??"
Henrik flushes more and nods, "With some help... M-Marvin helped me to draw it and Tessie put the ideas i-into the fabricator... it can make anything so... w-we could make another..."
JJ’s eyes light up and he nods eagerly. That would be so helpful! Can they make one so fast? Well, this is supposed to be the future, isn’t it? That would make sense.
Schneep clears his throat. "Your Jackie and Henrik mentioned those two. Danan and Zara. They are... friends of yours?"
Mer Jackie swims up and nods excitedly to Schneep, "Yeah! They're our friends! Danan is a former scientist with the white suits but she left to form this place! Cuz she wanted to take care of us but also let us be free! And Zara- well... she realized she was doing bad stuff and left to help us too! Now she's like- one of my best friends."
Chase smirks, "More than friends, I'd say."
"Huh?? What's that supposed to mean??" The reaper screeches, face getting red.
Jamie looks up and then makes kissing faces at mer-Jackie. The reaper shrieks in response and tackles Jamie to the ground and the two start to wrestle. Henrik and Chase don't seem phased by this but they do laugh.
Jackie grins. “Ah… reminds me of a friend of mine who constantly teased me about my dating life. His name is Chase, too.” He shakes his head. “Still can’t believe he figured out Frederick was my boyfriend before we told him…”
JJ blinks at him. You know, in my world you’re married to a lovely person named Rama.
“Really? Never met anyone with that name. Glad he’s happy with them, though.”
Alt looks over at Jackie with wide eyes and then swims over, looking excited, "You guys got together?! Thank god! Dude you were sooo obvious the last time I was there!"
“Wh—sh-shut up, I was not!” Jackie protests.
JJ laughs. If you’re anything like my Jackie, you were.
“Oh yes, same,” Schneep says. “The Jackie I know is not dating anyone right now—the whole… situation kind of interfered with that—but in the past, when he did—”
“You all are so mean to me,” Jackie whines.
"You're one to talk Alt," Bro snickers, "Sounds like there's another doppelganger of your boyfriend here if I'm guessing right."
Alt shuts up as his face turns red. "y-you don't know that... m-maybe its just... similar names!"
Bro rolls his eyes and then looks at Mer Jackie. "In our world you- I mean... our Jackie is married to someone named Zara. They have 3 kids together."
Reaper Jackie seems to short circuit. "k-kids?!" His face becomes as red as his hood.
The rest of the merboys laugh. Alt and Bro also burst into laughter at the other boys' banter.
Jackie laughs as well. “Yeah, I know, right? I can’t see it for myself, personally. Kids, I mean.”
"Anyways- Danan knows a lot about this kinda stuff. More than we would. If you guys... don't know Alterra and got lost here, she can probably help." Chase explains.
Schneep clears his throat. “In any case, yes, we would love to meet Danan. She sounds wonderful.”
Henrik swims up back towards the tubes, "Come- we can stop by the lab first to get a device for JJ. Maybe Danan will be nearby!"
“Ooo, ‘the lab,’” Schneep repeats, eyes lighting up—literally, irises turning turquoise. “That sounds fascinating. Well, lead the way, then! Ah, if you want to, of course.”
Henrik smiles, "Of course! Follow me." And he swims back up into the tubes. The others start to follow. Jackie follows after Henrik immediately, and Schneep isn't far behind. But JJ lingers, waiting for everyone. Chase swims down and meets back up with the kids. "I think my brothers need me anddd your mom is probably looking for you." He laughs and pokes the glass. "Don't get into more trouble, okay? "
"Awww okay Chase." The boy whines. Chase chuckles, "Don't be sad, Grayson. We'll catch up later okay?" The girl perks up and types out another message. "Bye Chase! Love you!" Chase blinks and blushes a bit before smiling warmly, "Yeah... bye Skylar..."
Grayson grabs Skylar's hand and starts to lead her back down the hall and Skye leans back to keep waving at Chase. Chase floats there for a second waving after them before sighing and following after the others.
JJ smiles as he sees Chase's interaction with the kids. He doesn't know a Chase in his world... but if he's anything like Bro and this Chase, he must be kind. And yet, as that thought comes to him, something bad lingers at the back of his mind. Why does he feel... dread? His smile fades and he shakes it off, following everyone else into the tube system.
The tubes lead into a few more confusing circles before they wind up in a green tinted room. It's filled to the brim with gadgets and materials, fabricators lining the walls and bigger machines in the corners. A workbench-like table is set up in the middle and even though this place looks like it’s made more for humans, it’s filled with water on the inside. Inside curled up in the corner is a bundle of purple.
"Oooo." Jackie looks around. More scifi shit.
Jamie seems excited and swims forward, "Marvin!" He quietly greets.
The purple thing jumps- and a bunch of metal starts to float around it, caught in a blue light that reflects in its eyes. Upon closer look- it's another hybrid! But this one seems closer to JJ- in which his tails are see-through, you can see his inner organs inside his chest and he has two tentacle-like legs. A purple armored cape hangs around his shoulders that end in tentacle-like tails too. He has bright green hair that is quite long compared to the others, pulled back into a ponytail by a bright blue ribbon. And most notable at all, he has a white cat mask on his face, a strange red symbol in the middle.
Reaper Jackie swims up next and grins, "Marv! I wondered where ya were!"
Schneep lingers near the wall, pressing a hand to the glass. There's someone else in here. He can feel them even before Reaper Jackie calls out his name. Marvin, huh?
JJ grins widely, flapping his arms and causing the attached wings to flutter. This place is so cool! Oh, and another Marvin! A nice one, he hopes--feels like he's the only one who has a nice Marvin. This one has cool powers!
"y-yeah h-hi...?" Marvin mumbles out nervously, "I was just... I..."
"You were trying out those new powers of yours, yes?" Henrik supplies. Marvin sheepishly nods. Then, he seems to notice the new people and he yells, throwing out a hand and sending bits of glowing metal junk hurtling towards through the water.
"Holy shit!" Jackie starts to dodge the junk but a big bit hits him in the stomach, sending him flying back. JJ isn't as fast and takes two blows, one to the chest and one to the tail. Schneep immediately tenses when he hears Marvin yell and the whoosh of water. He instinctively leaps to the side, but he doesn't quite get out of the way and a sharp bit of metal cuts his upper arm. "Motherfucker!" Schneep curses. "We mean you no harm!"
Alt and Bro try to dodge- But Bro gets hit across his cheek and he holds it with a yelp. "Ow! Jesus!" Alt almost manages to glitch out of the way- only to be disoriented by glitching in water which feels weird and actually kinda hurts! So he gets hit by another piece that hit him in the chest. He oomfs and tumbles back in a bit of somersault before he rights himself.
"Stay back!" Marvin hisses, holding out his hand as more objects lift up in the water, glowing like the blue light in his eyes that starts to shift to a hot pink. "I-I don't know who you guys are but-!" He gasps a bit as he sees Alt glitch though and the objects all float back down as the power dies down. He appears next to Alt in a circle of purple and blue magic and gets right up in his face. "Y-You... you warped! H-How?? How did you do that? Y-You're not a warper!"
"A-A what?!" Alt stammers out, nervous now that Marvin is in his face. That shade of purple is... luckily not like Mag's. But, it's too close for comfort.
Marvin swims back with wide panicked eyes and behind all the human-hybrids a pull is felt. But- it's not like the rifts- this one is glowing and swirling with pink and blue like a whirlpool. "I-I dunno what you are but! G-Get away from my brothers!" Marvin shouts.
"Really! We're not here to hurt you!" Jackie holds his hands up--then spins around as the pull appears behind them. JJ gasps in surprise. A whirlpool?! Schneep immediately latches onto the closest person—who turns out to be Jackie—and braces himself to be sucked in.
Then, Mer-Jackie tackles Marvin and the warp gate behind them bursts into bubbles as the concentration is broken. "M-Marv! It's okay! They're with us!"
JJ shakes his head, also raising his hands, and tries to look as harmless as possible.
"I said we're not here to hurt you," Jackie mutters.
The rest of the merboys come over and try to explain, kneeling down by Marvin.
"Friends!" Jamie emphasizes.
"I-I still don't get it but i-I Think they're harmless..." Chase adds.
"We are trying to help them, Marvin, but we will not let them hurt you...!" Henrik says gently.
Marvin still seems freaked as he looks up towards the human strangers. "W-Who are you?"
"um- I'm Alt, if that helps..." Alt speaks up. "And t-this is my brother... Chase."
Bro waves, "You guys can call me Bro though if you want... s'easier."
"I... think this will be very strange for you to hear," Schneep says slowly. "But I am Schneep, and this is Jackie and JJ."
"Hi." Jackie tries for a smile.
Marvin's eyes widen as he hears their names and looks at all his brothers with a bit of distress. Reaper Jackie gives him a tight smile. "Yeah... it's weird I know but... I just think they're lost. And they have like weird powers which is why they're hybrids too. Alterra didn't make em..."
JJ swims over towards Jackie and Schneep, holding onto Schneep's arm. A bit of blue magic wipes away the cut on his arm. Is anyone else hurt? he asks.
"I'm fine... just got my breath knocked out of me," Jackie says, looking down at his stomach where the junk hit him. He might have a bruise there later.
Marvin still looks a bit guarded but that goes out the window as he sees the blue magic and how JJ healed Schneep. He swims over and then pulls on Schneep's arm and then lifts it up like he can see where the cut went. He looks at JJ with wide eyes. "H-How did you do that??"
The other merboys also look fascinated by this and swim a bit closer.
Schneep stiffens a little, but he doesn't pull away as Marvin grabs his arm. JJ notices, though. He smiles at Marvin and gently pulls his hand away from Schneep. Magic, JJ says.
"He says it's magic," Jackie says. "That's some of those weird powers your Jackie mentioned."
Bro timidly raises his hand and points to his cheek, "...if you wanna show them more, J."
JJ looks at Bro and nods. He puts his hand on his face, next to the scrape, and similar blue magic heals it away. He then pulls away, shaking his head slightly. I can't do it forever. I have a limited amount of energy. So I think I'll save it for emergencies for now. Jackie repeats this for the hybrids.
Alt looks at JJ with worry. "Do you need anything to fuel your magic like I do? M-Maybe some food will help..."
JJ looks at Alt. Time and rest, is usually all I need. But food does help. I like thinking of it as a stamina bar in a video game. It recharges slowly but there are items to help fill it.
Alt laughs with JJ, "I like thinking of it that way too!"
"Magic?" Marvin's eyes shine a little bit then he giggles a bit shyly, "...i've always liked that word. .. it's how it feels to make my warp gates... you know? Making something out of nothing..."
Henrik notices the boys having to translate for JJ and hurries down to one of the fabricators, bringing up a hologram menu and clicking around on it. After finding the right plans he beams then swims around to collect the materials. He sets down the right ones and sets the machine to create. Two beams of light start to create the base of a fish robot like Jamie's. Henrik hurries over to another and makes the gloves that go with.
Schneep hears Henrik working around and swims closer, trying to figure out what's happening just by the sounds. He grins. This seems so interesting. Even just the noises are cool.
Alt can't help but be fascinated as he sees the machines create stuff- so much so that his tail starts sparking again. "Woah! Oh my god that's so fucking cool?! How is it doing that??"
"Oh uh... I dunno." Henrik says.
"Oh oh! Zara says it has something to do withhh rearranging maffer." Mer-Jackie says.
"It rearranges matter at the atomic level," Marvin says almost robotically, a bit of pink appearing in his eyes. "It was the catalyst behind the great expansion, and remains the backbone of the modern world." He shakes himself out. "It uh- makes stuff from other stuff."
The merboys look at Marvin weirdly.
Jackie frowns. "I'm guessing you didn't mean to say that," he mutters.
"...he's doing that fancy talking thing again," Reaper Jackie mutters. Chase laughs and ruffles Marvin's hair, "Kinda nice I'm not the know it all anymore!"
Marvin swats them with his tails. "I-I am not! Besides- Schneep is the know-it-all!"
"Yes, but I did not know that." Henrik laughs. He does give Marvin a look, something that holds a bit of concern.
Schneep turns his face towards Marvin again. "I am guessing you quoted something? It did not sound like your voice at all. Ah, I mean your personality—I assume, I mean." He tilts his head. "Rearrange matter at the atomic level... that must take an incredible amount of power. Yet this room does not seem so big. And I think the others would have mentioned it if you saw a huge power plant nearby. Oooo, how incredible it must be, then! The technology you could have that is possible but only limited by power—" He grins excitedly.
Jackie sighs. "All this science and magic stuff flies right by me. I mean... it's cool. But still." He rolls onto his back, floating with his hands behind his head.
Bro laughs with Jackie and nudges him, "dude me too- I don't get a lick of this stuff."
Marvin looks freaked out and backs up some. "I-I uh... I-I..." His eyes have a bit of pink in them again and he stiffens a bit, "T-There's multiple power sources on the planet. We are on top of a super volcano which provides thermal power the lower you go. Or Solar power which runs this base. Power Transmitters can use both solar and thermal power to power a single seabas-" He then shudders and swims backwards, holding his hands to his chest. He looks scared. "S-Sorry- sorry-" Jamie swims over and tries to hug Marvin- Marvin is stiff at first but slowly lets him.
Schneep faces Marvin again as he speaks some more. "N... no, I am sorry, for making that happen," he says quietly. He's curious, but he doesn't want Marvin to be seemingly taken over by whatever this is. Still, he's not the best at comfort, so he stays silent and lets Jamie take care of it.
"I-It's... fine." Marvin grumbles, "I'm t-trying to learn how to c-control it... sorry..."
Henrik grabs the new objects and hands them to JJ. "Here- put on these gloves... and then try to sign something. The robot should translate out loud for you. I have it set to have the same voice as Jamie's."
JJ's eyes light up. He puts the gloves on, making sure they're secure, then signs, Thank you. Can you understand me now?
The robot fish powers on and swims around JJ, partially translating. "Thank- you understand?"
"Huh... guess it's still struggling with BSL..." Alt mumbles.
"BSL? I've heard of that!" A new figure appears in the lab, and she has black hair bundled back into a ponytail and- oh she's human! She's in a blue and black dive suit with a strange symbol on her shoulder glowing blue and white. She also has purple eyes. Bro and Alt seem to recognize her immediately and stare a bit in dumbfounded awe. She's... younger than the Zara they know but- definitely Zara.
Mer-Jackie perks up and swims over to throw his arms around the woman. "Zara!! Hi!!"
The others turn to look at Zara—or, Schneep faces her. She's not familiar to the three of them, but Jackie does blink in surprise. So the Jackieboy from Bro and Alt's world is married to someone like that? ...well she is cute. Maybe if he'd never met Frederick he would've found her cuter, but he can understand it. He laughs a bit at mer-Jackie's excitement.
Zara laughs and hugs Jackie back, "Hey you!" She then blinks and realizes how many hybirds are in the room. "Woahhh- I knew our scanners picked up new lifeforms in the system but... wasn't expecting this..." She then grins and goes to swim over to grab JJ's fish robot. "Lemme try to fix this for ya though before we do intros!" She takes out a tool from a small bag tied to her leg and opens up a panel on the side of the fish. A small hologram menu shows up again and she scrolls through the options before she beams. "ah ha! Here it is!" She selects it and closes the panel before gesturing for JJ to try again. "Give it another try!"
JJ looks down at his gloves and tries signing again. Hello! It's nice to meet you. All of you.
The robot repeats his words back perfectly. The merboys all perk up and smiles. "Yay! We can understand you now!!" Mer Jackie says excitedly. Jamie swims around JJ in circles, giggling. "New friend! New sign friend!" His robot says.
Alt and Bro look relieved too and smile at JJ. Zara giggles, "Sorry it's usually set to Trans-Universal- BSL is like ancient now but some people still use it!"
Alt smiles at Zara, "I'm Alt- this is Chase." Bro waves.
Schneep nods. "Nice to meet you, Zara. This is going to sound very strange, but I am Schneep, and this is Jackie, JJ, Chase, and Alt. We are... ah..."
"We're from another universe," Jackie says bluntly. The others turn to face him, surprised, and he shrugs. "What? I got tired of dancing around it. Technically we're from other universes, actually."
Zara starts to smile at first but her face falls a bit and her eyes widen. "What...? a... different universe? Different universes?" She emphasizes looking shocked. "you're... all not even from this star system?"
"We're not even from this... plane of existence." Alt answers, rubbing his arm. "Like... good example- what year is it here? For us... it's 2020. Or for me and Chase- I mean Bro at least."
"WHAT?!" Zara exclaims in pure shock.
JJ nods slowly. Well actually it's 2019 in my world.
"Oh same," Jackie says.
"In mine, too," Schneep says.
Really? What month is it for you? It's March for us.
"January," Schneep answers, and at the same time Jackie says, "June."
"Oh you all are a year behind us- huh." Bro comments.
JJ looks at the hybrids. Sorry for not saying all this earlier. We weren't sure you would believe or understand us.
"Hell, I barely understood it, at first," Jackie says.
Schneep sighs. "And yet, you were so eager to share it."
"Honestly, I think it was rude for us to hide it."
"Well...Anti was very aggressive for us even mentioning our friends called Jack," Schneep says carefully. "Based on that, I was a bit hesitant."
"I'm not even sure I understand it..." Mer-Jackie says as he scratches his head. "The fuck is a universe?"
The merboys do all look a bit confused about this. Marvin grips at his head a bit but bites his lip to keep from saying anything.
"If you don't even know what a universe is, then... I am not sure how to describe it," Schneep says. "Think of it like... you have a piece of paper with a drawing on it. You copy the drawing, and on one you add some more details, but on the other you add different ones? Does that make sense at all?"
The merboys look even more confused. Well- except Marvin. He seems to understand the drawing analogy and nods. “Okay… I guess that makes sense.”
“Does it?” Henrik asks, making a face.
Zara still looks shocked, "I.. I can't believe that... h-here it's... 2232-"
"2232?!" Jackie inhales sharply. "Whoa... I-I guess it makes sense that time wouldn't line up perfectly... and that some worlds would be way ahead or way behind of the others.”
Alt sputters, "What?! t-that's insane-"
"As insane as you saying you're from another universe!! That's like- not in ours-"
"It's... parallel actually." Alt explains, "...that's why we all look similar or have similar names... in a way- we are some of you. Just... from somewhere different."
Chase makes a face, "How does that work? I.. I'm me- I'm not- not that guy!" He points at Bro.
Bro laughs nervously. "It's... complicated. But there's always ah... trends- similarities that tell us we're the same. B-Besides you know... looking like each other and having the same name."
I think that in a lot of ways that matter, we're not like you, JJ says. So... if it's easier for you, you can just think of us as a group of people who are kind of similar to your little family.
Chase nods to JJ, “y-yeah… you’re just… g-guys that look like us… that’s all.” He hugs his arms. “I-I don’t wanna think of it more beyond that…”
JJ smiles back at Chase. We'll leave it at that, then.
"Are you okay Ms. Zara?" Schneep asks. "You sound very shocked." He chuckles. "Though... that is understandable. It is very shocking."
Zara blinks at Schneep and then waves her hand. “Y-Yeah I’m just… trying to process all of this… like there’s a world- m-multiple worlds where these guys… don’t grow up here. In the past… that’s so crazy.” She laughs, “Do I even have a parallel in your worlds?”
“Uh… not in theirs,” Bro gestures to JJ, Jackie and Schneep. “But in mine and Alt’s? … yeah. You… you’re… a mum. And married to our friend, Jackie. Jackie Mann. But I think… is your last name uh… Caley? Cuz that was her maiden name.”
Zara’s face turns dark red and she holds her cheeks. “W-woah… god I… I’m way too young to be a mum!”
“To be fair our Zara is more of Bro’s age,” Alt laughs nervously.
“…there’s a universe where I… I get to be with Jackie and… have a family…?” She whispers, slowly smiling to herself.
"Yeah—and the kids are very cute," Jackie says, grinning. "I saw them for a bit when I popped into Alt and Bro's world. But I didn't see you." He pauses, thinking about what Bro said about Zara and their worlds. "Actually, maybe you do exist in our worlds? Our three. Maybe you exist, but we just don't know you?" He guesses. "It's a big world, after all. A whole planet—oh! Wait a second, by the way, is there even a planet Earth in this universe? Or did humans evolve on a different planet?"
"Perhaps it does?" Schneep says. "Alterra—the company name has 'terra' in it, and that is a word for Earth. It could be a very big coincidence that Alterra was called that—but perhaps not?"
Zara laughs, getting over her blush even if she glances at reaper Jackie who looks equally as flushed, hiding his face in his hood. “No you’re actually spot on! A lot of companies who went off into the further reaches of space came from earth of course, but Alterra was the only one bold enough to take its name. This is a planet far from Earth though. I’ve never even been near Earth- I was born here.” She explains, “We’re around a star called 4546 in the Ariadne Arm. This planet was the first found around 4546 so we call it 4546B. It’s a bit far from federation space but it’s more habitable than it was when it was rediscovered by Alterra almost a century ago. Right now Alterra’s trying to find… use of it. There’s lots of good resources and… well- ample places to experiment.”
Schneep makes a little "ooo"ing sound as Zara talks, and JJ swims closer, fascinated. But she lost Jackie the moment she confirmed that Earth existed.
“Those are… so many big words.” Bro mutters.
Zara laughs, “That sounds like something Jackie would say!” Mer-Jackie flicks his tail a bit in annoyance.
“I… I can’t believe we’re on a completely different planet…” Alt whispers in awe. “We’ve never managed to do that before.”
Zara blinks, “You’ve been to… other universes before?”
“Yeah! A ton! Me and Alt are like regular multiverse travelers now!” Bro grins.
"Not us, though." Jackie gestures at himself, Schneep, and JJ. "This is the first time I've been sucked into multiverse travel. Though—I guess I can't speak for you guys."
JJ shrugs. I got snapped to Alt and Bro's world one time, alone with some friends. But nothing since then.
Schneep shakes his head. "No, it is the same for me, Jackie, you are right." He pauses. "Though... one time, when I was getting used to my powers, I... ended up somewhere very strange. It is hard to describe... but it might have been outside my world." After a moment, he shakes his head again. "Don't ask me to go back there, though, I do not think I can. It was a freak accident... and very confusing."
"Well... what do we do now that we know more about this world?" Jackie looks at the others—mainly Alt and Bro, the experienced travelers. "We have these cool mermaid forms—hybrid forms, I guess. So I guess we could go anywhere? But... just, what do we do?"
“I… I dunno-“ Alt admits. “Honestly I was hoping… if this was future tech then… maybe they’d have a TRVLR like IRIS but… I don’t think they do.”
“Yeah sorry… none of those are ringing a bell.” Zara says softly.
Marvin seems to stiffen again and then clasps hands over his mouth. The merboys all look at him with confusion. “…do you know of something, Marvin?” Henrik asks.
Marvin tries to shake his head but then blurts out, his eyes going a bit pink again. “Sector Zero has an interplanetary phase gate hidden for Architect use-“
Zara’s eyes widen, “What?! A… a phase gate?!”
“Uhh- what’s a phase gate?” Bro asks.
"Ooooo, a phase gate," Schneep repeats, interested. "It sounds like some sort of... man-made wormhole."
Like from that movie Stargate! JJ says. He looks at the others. If you guys know what that is.
"I've vaguely heard of it, but I've never seen it," Jackie says.
“Yeah same- never was big on sci-fi movies.” Bro laughs.
“Phase gates are used for travel between sectors of space- they’re huge things used to teleport whole space crafts to other worlds. Sector Zero has that??” Zara gasps.
“The fuck is sector zero?!” Mer Jackie asks. Marvin almost seems to pale.
“It’s the arctic part of this planet outside the crater where we are now… I know there used to be researchers there a while ago but… that place gets abandoned a lot. It’s too cold.” Zara laughs lightly. Then she perks up and seems to realize what Jackie is. “oh!! That’s why you look so strange! You’re not a species from this side of the planet you’re a- a… oh what are they called?”
“A chelicerate.” Marvin supplies robotically before clasping his mouth shut again.
“Yeah!! That!” Zara beams. She swims around Jackie to admire him. “yeah! They’re like… the equivalent of reapers over there! That’s what my dad said at least- I think he and Zeke studied there for a bit!”
Jackie looks down at himself. "Oh. Huh." The mandibles snap again. "So... guess it's fitting that I turned into one, if this Jackie is part reaper. Parallels and shit."
Are you okay, Marvin? JJ asks, concerned. Do you need us to stop asking questions?
Marvin shakes his head. “I… it’s fine I just- h-hate that this k-keeps happening. I-It’s like my head fills with words and they don’t go away until I… I say them.”
“Danan did say it could be from your warper chip… warpers apparently are very smart.” Chase says.
Marvin grumbles. “I don’t wanna be smart… I don’t like being a… computer thing that just s-spews stuff out…” Jamie frowns and hugs Marvin around his shoulders.
Schneep frowns at the implications. Did they put a chip in Marvin’s head? Sure, the guys are experiments in this world, but something about that seems a bit too far even by those standards. "Unfortunately, I have another question that seems important," Schneep continues. "What does this phase gate have to do with the TRVLR thing, and IRIS? I see the connection between traveling through space and traveling through worlds, but... it is a different thing with a different purpose. And apparently made by a different company."
"And who the hell is Zeke?" Jackie asks.
Zara sighs, “Unfortunately… Zeke is my older brother. He’s… not a good guy. He’s the reason I left to stay here and… he tried to turn Marvin into a…a full time warper for him to use. And uh here- warpers are a type of like- mix of biology and tech… they were made by an ancient group of aliens that lived here like… a thousand years ago I think?” She shrugs, “The ones that live here are pretty harmless. Just- warping around, which is like teleporting. They’re Predators but they keep to themselves mostly. Not many are left cuz… they don’t reproduce and the Architects are gone So… Zeke thought Marvin was… fascinating.” Both Zara and Marvin shudder.
“Oh, so he’s an asshole,” Jackie says.
You can’t just call someone’s relative an asshole, even if they’re a bad person, JJ says.
“No no no, let him keep going,” Schneep says. See, that’s why he thought it was too far to put a chip in someone. Who knows how that could be taken advantage of? Even if these real warpers have tech, he can’t believe Alterra did that. Or—any of this, really.
Zara laughs, “No you’re right. He’s the biggest asshole. …but I think he just… got influenced by all the Alterans we worked with… I dunno. Part of me wants to… find some way to…” She shakes her head. “no… there’s no excusing what he did. But uh- speaking of the architects that brings me back to Schneep’s point. I.. I don’t know how a phase gate relates? I mean… they’re powerful… maybe there’s a way to set it to… different universes? I dunno… I don’t know many people here who work on that kinda tech. Most of us are like… Xeno-biologists or simple Alteran engineers.” Zara explains. “Besides I feel like if Alterra had that kind of knowledge they’d be advertising it like crazy. Those guys only care about research and money…”
“Hm… maybe Marvin simply got triggered to say that from hearing traveler?” Henrik suggests.
“Fuck if I know…” Marvin sighs, crossing his arms.
Alt hums, “…maybe we can try to see if we can like- work with a phase gate?”
“I dunno- those things are hugeee.” Zara says. “And still- no one here knows how to work them…”
“Hm… is there anything… smaller then? M-Maybe like- interacting with something like that could… I dunno- sense we’re not from here and send us home? Or like- I’m good with tech…maybe I could figure something out..”
Marvin stiffens again, “Similar technology is used in the Alien arches scattered across the crater. All connect to the Primary Containment facility.” He says robotically.
The merboys all gasp slightly. “T-That is where they had Jack and Anti…”
Alien technology… JJ repeats. It’d be exciting if the hybrids didn’t all have an immediate negative reaction to hearing about this containment facility. I’m going to guess the place is under the company’s control?
“Then it’s probably not safe to get too close,” Jackie says. “People like that would be fascinated with your guys’ magic.”
“But we still need to get home,” Schneep mutters.
“Yes but… the base there was also destroyed.” Henrik replies to JJ, adjusting his goggles. “I do not know if the containment was destroyed… but we also do not know if there are any… survivors down there.”
“It’s also not safe to go there cuz it’ll boil most of us alive.” Mer- Jackie says, “It’s down in the lava zone. Only Marvin and Anti can go down there without being fried.”
“Lava zone?!” Jackie gasps. “That would be so cool if it wasn’t able to kill us! Well—still kinda cool, I guess, but you know what I mean.”
Schneep frowns. He almost wants to ask what destroyed the base… but maybe later. He doesn’t want to get sidetracked.
Marvin’s eyes dim a bit and he answers a bit more quietly, “…I think A-Ant- Alt is onto something though… if similar tech exists in these arches then… t-they’re teleporters. Maybe there is a way to make the destination back towards your homes…”
“That is true… these humans do possess power that even the white suits do not have…” Henrik muses.
“And um… we don’t need to go to the lava zone… we can find one of the arches c-closer by I think…? I’ve… seen a few around.” Marvin says timidly.
“Oh yeah- isn’t there one in the mountains?” Chase says. “It’s that- freaky black diamond thing we sometimes race through.”
“Y-Yeah that’s it.”
I suppose it makes sense that there are closer ones, JJ says. If you have teleporting technology you would want to use it.
“…we should ask Danan,” Zara says. “She’s been researching on this planet longer than I have and might know more about this architect stuff.”
“Danan, right.” Jackie nods slowly. “If she’s in charge here, we should let her know we’re here, anyway.”
“Where is Danan?” Bro asks.
Zara sighs. “She’s taking care of Jack… which means well- you’ll be able to see Anti again because.. he’s there too. Doing his uh- guard thing.”
JJ tilts his head. You know, where I’m from, Jack is Anti’s cousin. They’re the only ones of us who are related.
“They’re pretty close where I’m from, too,” Jackie says. “I uh… don’t know how to describe it. They’re like best friends and family and a weird symbiotic relationship wrapped all into one.”
“Ha… weird. I got a friend named Jack back at home. He helps me make my music for shows.” Alt grins.
Schneep laughs nervously. “Well… that is fun to know. Anyway, should we head in that direction?” He doesn’t want to talk about his Jack and Anti.
The merboys shift a bit uncomfortably. “Jack and Anti have always been close… despite Jack being a bit older than him.” Chase says sadly. “But… now Anti hardly leaves Jack’s side… I think it’s cuz…”
“Cuz of what those white suit fucks did to him.” Reaper Jackie growls, digging his nails into his arms. “They made him their personal bodyguard to make sure Jack never escaped. But- heh, that backfired on them.” He grins.
The more I learn about Alterra the less I like them,” Schneep mutters. JJ and Jackie nod in agreement.
“Yeah just know he might be a bit… snippy, to put it lightly.” Zara says with a wince.
“Don’t worry though! We’ll protect ya!” Mer-Jackie says brightly.
Bro laughs, “I’m not worried dude- I think we can handle it. We’re all a pretty tough bunch.”
“Hey, I can handle a snippy Anti,” Jackie says. “The one I know is a dick. Good person, but a little mean.”
JJ chuckles. My Anti can be like that too. You have to get through the prickly outside.
“Yeah I think all Antis are like that- especially the good ones.” Bro laughs, nudging Alt. Alt glares a bit then flicks his tail at Bro giving him a tiny shock. Bro yelps then makes a face at Alt who only grins back. “What? You said I was prickly, prick.”
“Okay, I suppose that you should all go in front, then?” Schneep hurriedly says before anyone can notice him avoiding the topic of his Anti. “So that way he sees you first before us. I imagine we look quite shocking.”
“Your tail is transparent, by the way,” Jackie comments. “We can see the bones.”
“What?!” Schneep leans down and grabs onto his tail, but it feels like normal fish flesh to him.
The others all kinda hide their laughter. “Y-You didn’t know? You’re just like me actually.” Marvin tries to smile.
“Oh uh- Schneep is… blind.” Bro tells everyone. The ones who didn’t know eyes widen.
“Oh! Wow- you… don’t super act like it but that makes sense..” Zara says. “Good thing you got those tendrils though! I bet they help.”
“River Prowlers use their tendrils to lure in prey.” Marvin says with a twitch and then shudders.
“The extra limbs are helpful, yes,” Schneep says, one of the tendrils grabbing onto JJ’s arm. JJ looks at it a bit warily as Marvin makes that comment, but doesn’t pull away.
Mer-Jackie nods to Schneep, “Well you got the right idea other Schneep, we’ll head the group, c’mon!”
He quickly swims back up into the tubes, the rest of his brothers following after. Zara smiles at the rest of them before following.
“Oh, Zara’s coming with us?” Jackie says, surprised. “I, uh, hope we’re not interrupting anything.”
“I’m sure she knows what she’s doing,” Schneep says. “It will be nice to have someone to help explain.”
Thank you again for your help with the robot, by the way, JJ adds. Then they all follow the others, leaving in that order.
“Ha don’t worry! Hanging out with these guys is kinda my part time job now. ” Zara says with a wink. “Except better cuz I enjoy it! …and I don’t get paid regardless.” She laughs. “Plus it seems like you all need some more uh- human explanations. The boys are still- learning a bunch.”
Alt and Bro follow closely behind but Alt starts mumbling. “I wish I knew a spell that could like… I dunno… fix your vision or at least let you see temporary, Hen…”
“Hmm? Oh.” Schneep turns back towards him and smiles. “Thank you for the concern, Alt. It means a lot, truly. But you don’t have to go out of your way for me. There is a sadness that I lost my sight, but I have grown used to it. I have more accommodations than most blind people, since I can tell where people are, at least. I am mostly satisfied with my situation. I don’t think I need anything more.”
“Wow Schneep you’ve taken losing a whole sense with a lot of grace.” Bro smiles.
Alt frowns and holds his arms. “…I can’t imagine losing my vision. Maybe it’s just cuz I’m an artist but… I just… that terrifies me. I dunno how you do it.”
“I do wish you could see all this though,” Bro says quietly, looking outside the base as they cross through the glass tunnels. “All of this is… just insane.”
“Oh, well, it has not been easy, of course,” Schneep says. “I had to leave my job—hard to be a surgeon when you cannot see the patient. And there are many inconveniences. Even something like buying food can be difficult. Cannot read the labels, yes? But I am lucky to have had support in adjusting. My friends are always willing to help.”
Jackie looks back at him for a moment, thinking. “You… I’m glad they’re there for you,” he says softly.
Schneep nods. “I am very thankful for them.” He presses a hand to the glass wall of the tube. “But I am sad to be missing out on the view.”
We could describe it for you? JJ suggests.
Schneep laughs. “Give me the colors, if anything. I can figure out the rest with my other senses.”
Bro sighs, “Damn… going to medical school for so long and then having to stop… that majorly sucks.”
“Your friends are good ones though,” Alt smiles. Then he blinks and looks out the windows. “Well here it’s- it’s kinda green but I think that’s cuz there’s these tall kelp vines. You probably felt those. Most of the leaves are at the top of the water though so it kinda makes a canopy? So it’s a bit darker here… and there’s like these glowing fruit things on the vines so it’s all- glowing and shit.”
“Glowing…” Schneep repeats. He smiles. “It must be beautiful.”

Canada selects Boeing's P-8A Poseidon as its new multi-mission aircraft
The partnership with Canadian industry will provide long-term economic prosperity to Canada 🇨🇦

With the P-8, Canada guarantees the interchangeability of allies NORAD and FIVE EYES.
The government of Canada signed a letter of offer and acceptance of foreign military sales for up to 16 Boeing P-8A Poseidon aircraft, as part of the Canadian Multimission Aircraft Project (CMMA).
Canada joins eight defense partners, including all allies of FIVE EYES, the intelligence alliance that also includes the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, and becomes the fifth NATO nation to have selected the P-8 as its multi-mission aircraft. The first delivery is scheduled for 2026.
“The P-8 will strengthen Canada's defense capability and readiness, and we look forward to delivering that capability to the Royal Canadian Air Force,” said Heidi Grant, president of Business Development at Boeing Defense, Space & Security. “Together with our Canadian partners, we will deliver a strong package of industrial and technological benefits that will ensure continued prosperity for Canada's aerospace and defense industry.”
The P-8 is the only proven in-service and production solution that meets all CMMA requirements, including range, speed, strength and payload capacity. This decision will benefit hundreds of Canadian companies and bring decades of prosperity to Canada through the support of the platform provided by our Canadian industrial partners.
The acquisition of P-8 will generate benefits of almost 3,000 jobs and $358 million annually in economic output for Canada, according to a 2023 independent study by Ottawa-based Doyletech Corporation.
“This is a very important day for the Royal Canadian Air Force and Boeing,” said Charles 'Duff Sullivan, managing director of Boeing Canada. "The P-8 offers unparalleled capabilities and is the most affordable solution for acquisition and life cycle maintenance costs. There is no doubt that the P-8 will protect Canada's oceans and borders for future generations."
The partnership with Canadian industry will provide long-term economic prosperity to Canada.
The Poseidon Team is the cornerstone of Boeing's Canadian P-8 industrial partnership, composed of CAE, GE Aviation Canada, IMP Aerospace & Defense, KF Aerospace, Honeywell Aerospace Canada, Raytheon Canada and StandardAero. The team is based on the 81 existing Canadian suppliers for the P-8 platform and more than 550 Boeing suppliers in all provinces, contributing to the company's annual economic benefit of approximately CAD$ 4 billion for Canada, supporting more than 14,000 Canadian jobs.
With more than 160 aircraft delivered or in service and 560,000 collective flight hours, the P-8 has proven capabilities for anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and humanitarian assistance/disaster relief response.

It is when the battleship Condescension crashes into the ocean, largely intact and still possessing the best anti-psionic shielding in the whole Empire, that Feferi Peixes realizes her friends might have a chance at surviving the Vast Glub. She and the loyal Eridan Ampora break into the nearest airlock and start culling their way to the bridge - it’s easier than Feferi thinks it should be, the adult crew distracted and dying from the world-breaking cries of her lusus. There are fewer and fewer obstacles as they reach their destination; every troll aboard appears to have been trying to evacuate before inevitably succumbing, flooding the exits and leaving the interior paths clear. There is only one troll still standing when they reach the darkened bridge, the viewscreens all turned to static - a tealblood, choking and bleeding from every orifice in her head. She shakily raises her gun, but Eridan is quicker, taking her down with a single bullet. He isn't immune himself, not this close - but he is high on the spectrum, and strong, and more accustomed to Gl’bgolyb’s murmurs than most. He sways slightly, but his aim is true. Feferi spies the prone form of her ancestor, the Empress, Her Imperious Condescension - the adult fuchsia, barely conscious from head wounds sustained in the crash, raises herself onto her hands - Feferi thrusts her culling fork down onto the nape of her ancestor’s neck, pinning her to the floor. She grabs a hatchet from a fallen oliveblood before the choking Empress can reach for her weapon. Feferi slams the axe down - five, six, seven, eight, nine times, before the elder royal’s head rolls free of her shoulders. Feferi stares down at the bloody scene, breathing heavily.

“I wanna get better”
Ok, this is more sad. Piarles. (I went cuckoo. sorry) CW for mental health stuff
Pierre in the midwest going to university while living at home - commuting 45 minutes to campus three days a week, driving to their research facility one day, and working on his dad's farm the other three.
Spending late nights when he can't sleep wandering through a pasture with a headlamp and his dog while he thinks about living on a coast - somewhere he can stand on a beach and feel small in a really different way - thinking about that time he was eight and his parents drove them all to the Californian coast and he knew what happiness was.
He goes to parties with his friends and he wants to feel something, but the girl he was dating for 2.5 years dumped him last year when he started anti-depressants because she couldn't get it and he can't get himself to ask out the girl in his physics class that has made it really clear that she likes him and he's like, trying really hard to make it work.
He starts his third year and his dad is asking him when he starts his practicum for his teacher's exam and Pierre doesn't know how to tell him he's been thinking about applying to grad school or that he's been seeing the therapist at university or that he's having those discount medical cards sent to his friends dorm room mailing address so he can pay cash for anti-depressants without his parents finding out, but he's making it, you know? He's making it.
And then he's sitting in the library right before his 21st birthday and he's got like 15 open tabs for colleges on the coast that offer master's degrees in biology and that's when Charles flops down in front of him, laughing and asking if he can sit with him. "Sorry if this is weird, but everywhere else is full and I just...really have to try and figure this shit out or I will fail this biology exam."
Pierre is entranced by him and obviously offers to help. Clears his throat a little and asks, "who's the professor?" and slides the textbook over to him, to highlight the important information, but he slides his computer away and Charles is laughing again. "Are you transferring to South Carolina?" before squinting. "Oh god, tell me I haven't managed to find the only other person from South Carolina?"
Pierre shakes his head. Explains he's thinking about going to grad school there and instead of him helping him with Biology, he's slowly being told about all the best places to hang out and all the spots that Charles loves and how he's really actually cold and miserable and he's been flirting with the idea that he will transfer and finally Pierre is like, "I'm so sorry, but I have to go to class, but I will help you with this. Give me your number and we can set something up." And Charles is so shameless like "God, I didn't even have to work to get you to ask me for my number." and obviously Pierre can't take it back, just blushes and laughs it off, but god. It sits heavy in his heart.
He sees Charles two days later and helps him with his biology, but he also looks at his dimples and watches the way he drags his vowels and he waits and waits and waits while he tells long and rambly stories that don't mean anything. And so when he says into the abyss of his car on his drive home that night, "I think I might be gay" and it doesn't scare him the way he thinks it will, he texts Charles and asks if he wants to go grab lunch with him - no biology homework this time.
It's a very fast and mad descent into being in love for the first time.
Pierre is so incredibly busy, but he's lying to his parents about school work and he's driving into town to spend whole days in Charles' dorm room, licking up his neck and explaining biology homework to him in great detail and learning about himself and about Charles in return and it's a bit like standing in the ocean again for the first time.
Charles understands loss and he understands that Pierre feels like he's trapped in a box and he makes him laugh and he makes him feel like he's on top of the world and they're sneaking around and it's everything young love should be.
Charles tells him he's staying for May-mester too because there's this class he needs and it's only offered in the summer and so Pierre knows they have four months together and he plans on making every single day count.
It's just that...he maybe gets so wrapped up in Charles, in thinking this was the thing missing from his life that he stops...filling his prescription and he...goes a bit wobbly in May.
Charles has class four days a week and Pierre doesn't have class at all and his dad finds out that he's been seeing someone from school and he kind of goes to the dark place and I think they have a really nasty fight the last week of May and Pierre accuses Charles of not giving him enough time and Charles is like, I can't go anywhere with you I can't go home I can't go to restaurants I can't do anything so how?
He goes to see Charles the night before his flight back to SC and Charles says, "I love you, but I think you need to...figure some stuff out."
And Pierre is...still at home. Watching Charles have the summer of his life in South Carolina before Charles posts a really vague thing at the beginning of August about being home and then he calls that night - for the first time all summer and Pierre gets really excited. Thinks he's coming back.
"I'm transferring, Pierre." Charles tells him quietly. "I just...I need to get my shit together. I was barely going to class last semester and I just...I can't be the only thing you have in your life. It's not good for either of us."
Pierre has half a dozen half finished applications and two letters of recommendation and an expired anti-depressant prescription and he decides that he can't do this. He can't be the person who has half a life because he's scared or can't get his shit together.
The next year is really really hard and it goes something like this: He tells his parents about the anti-depressants and he comes out and he tells them he wants to go to grad school and his dad is furious, but his mom holds him and cries and helps him make a list of what he needs to do. He applies to six grad programs. He takes his anti-depressants everyday and he goes to therapy and he tries really hard. He graduates with two acceptances and he has a text from Charles congratulations on graduating and it's the first contact they've had in months since Pierre unfollowed him on Instagram and it doesn't feel like it's going to kill him and he texts him back and thanks him and tells him he hopes he's happy. Charles reads it but doesn't respond. Pierre goes on a couple of dates with a guy he met online that summer, but he tells him he's going to grad school in the fall and so they remain friends and that's really it.
The fic ends with Pierre moving into his new apartment right off campus, meeting his roommates in person for the first time and they ask if he wants to go out that night as a welcome dinner and he's like, SURE.
They all walk into this place with garage sides that roll up and foamy beer and it's just so...Pierre can almost smell the ocean from here and he feels alive - just like he did when he was eight and just like he did when he fell in love with Charles and just like he did when his therapist hugged him during their last session and told him she was proud of him.
He's being introduced to one of his roommate's friends from his grad program and Pierre hears him - Charles.
He turns around and he's there. Talking to a group of people, laughing and talking too loudly like he's prone to doing, but he turns immediately when Pierre says his name. "Charles."
His eyes go wide and Pierre thinks he's pissed but then he's throwing himself across the group of people and Pierre almost tips backwards catching him and Charles is laughing. "What are you doing here? What are you doing here? Oh my god. Are you starting school here?"
And Pierre laughs, telling him that he is. he's starting his grad program next week - is Charles on vacation or?
"I transferred in. I finished my associate's at the junior college back home and I - this was my number one pick." Charles laughs and pulls his phone out. "I think I'm gonna need a lot of biology help this semester."
Pierre puts his number in. "Why the hell are you taking biology? Don't tell me you're trying to -"
"Pierre." Charles laughs, "It's a line. I'm never taking another biology class in my life. I'm just getting your number."
"Oh," PIerre smiles before handing the phone back.
"Listen, I do have to get back to my friends because they will lock me out of the apartment tonight, but I will text you okay? And we'll get together and talk, yeah? I know it's shit of me to say, but I've thought about you like, every single day and this is...kismet or something."
Pierre nods and accepts the hug and when he turns back to his roommates, he shrugs and says, "It's my ex." and they all laugh.
He doesn't stay his ex, and Pierre goes to therapy and takes his anti-depressants and he and Charles sit on the beach for hours and they talk about everything and nothing and Pierre reminds himself that he always wants to get better.

25 Years Of Discovery.
January 1st, 2000 came with such underwhelming results. Didn’t help that last summer I had to permanently cut ties with a Judas sorority cousin after a public screaming match in front of family, neighbors, and strangers. I also pissed away the ones closest to me, my circle of “friends” from Brentwood. The liars, narcissists, victim-blamers, and the ones who left me out to dry all alone in parking lots because they were too awesome having fun in groups. Now you see why I had to spend New Year’s at the neighborhood church, pining away three hours until midnight arrived and even I couldn’t have that. A mother arrived with two screaming kids at 11:30 PM and all the while she’s running around the aisles between the seats, shuffling around like crazy catching them to stay put and she acted like a stereotypical soccer mom in the process. The most anti-climactic way to celebrate anything ever.
As my former friend Victoria said: “sometimes you have to go through the worst to get to the best.” Nice one, sweetheart. The best isn’t guaranteed no matter what people suffer through. The following Summer saw myself dealing with even more fallouts and the unpleasant surprises kept delivering.
What became of a Summer job working at the pool supply store with my friend Dede became a weekend bully convention. Dede, who got me the job, showed his true colors when he stood and laughed at me as two co-workers swung boxcutters at me. Store managers who heard my concerns nodded their heads and promised action, but in the end did zero. Showing up five minutes early for my shift wasn’t enough for Dede, however, and the Ever-Controlling One wanted me to work more days. "Who cares about your well-being?", he argued, because according to him it was all about him and his job. After daily dealings with his elitist prima-donna starfucker attitudes and half of the store talking about me behind my back, I no-showed him and shut him out for good. The next morning, he called my house while I was sleeping. “Why did you quit on me?” he asked. No “hello”, no “what’s wrong”, no “hey, everything OK?”. I answered by hanging up on him. Good-bye and good riddance to a self-important narcissistic asshole. But, I still had one out left in the deck. That out was Anna.
Anna and I had plans to meet up at Ocean City where she lived. Eight months of weekend online chats, pictures, cassette trades, hand-written letters (!), and Sunday night calls in the making. Here was a 5’8” pale Polish girl of straight neck-length brunette hair, green eyes, mid-cut shirts and tight jeans. Cute, flirtatious, charming. She came across so amorous and complimentary in such a way I never felt from anyone before. We’d trade notes about my struggles dealing with prima-donna underground musicians and egocentric writer-critics. She had her own drama with friends, co-workers, and exes- while recapping last night’s episode of Saturday Night Live. It was one of the few shining points of a dismal few semesters at community college. All fucking week I looked forward to those two hours talking to her on the phone. The time was right for me to come visit. She wanted it to happen. We made plans well in advance in what would be a unique event for me. To meet someone in a different state via Greyhound and experience something totally new would be exceptional.
Sunday night comes and I get a phone call from her to verify that it’s a go…it’s not happening. She broke the news to me in a sad let-down tone. Our plans were canceled. What was it? Was it because I was quiet about her mixtapes she sent me? Or was it because I saw no indication that she didn’t keep base with her folks that I was coming over and maybe her cover was blown? To this day I don’t even know. She never gave me a reason. They usually don’t. Real nice how some people show their interest in you, take it all back at the last minute and ultimately string you along for a few more miles before leaving you on the side of the road and drive away, never to be heard from again.
It’s June 19th and Summer was on life support. The only saving grace was spending 4th of July at a friend’s house. Then it finally died. I had close to nothing. No job, no pursuits, no movement, nada. Only a Playstation, bike rides to the library, and some trips to the bookstore to buy whatever music with what little money I still had. I was grateful in no longer having a selfish self-centered superstar for a friend, manager, and connection. On the other hand, Anna made me feel dejected because our plans were no more with no reason why. The season now became an excruciating waiting game for Autumn for a final unbearable semester at Suffolk Community.
I was already one year into listening to WUSB. They were the only game in town that played industrial and underground hip-hop. I tried hard to distract myself from recently losing the chance to see Anna, so radio was the drug of choice. I had plenty of blanks to run record on during my late-night shoot-’em-up sessions. Dubbing had been my weekly ritual since the Brentwood era. It was our way of capturing the moment. Downloading and streaming was in their infancy, and we didn’t have the permanence of online archives or YouTube. If you missed it, that’s it. Four, five, six tapes were lined up for the record button with one set aside to be transferred on. That was the beauty of dual tape decks, consolidation, and re-recording. Hit the red dot and let the chips fall as they may. Up on the itinerary: one of the four hip-hop slots our station had on the grid. Ghetto Radio, Street FM, The Basement, or Eminent Audio. Those slots never played the commercial -ish at the time, and they were four reasons why I returned to hip-hop after mostly abandoning it by senior year.
So, this happened: two of Eminent Audio’s dee-jays decided to play some short snippets of Seventies’ jazz, fusion, funk, and groove. Some late Seventies’ groove-line, and some Eighties’ R&B. The classics spun in short 20-30 second bursts, one after the other. It all started with Gang Starr’s “The Planet” which sampled Taj Mahal’s “The Cuckoo”, followed by Steve Davis’ “It’s All Because She’s Gone”, then Galt MacDermot’s First Natural Hair Band’s “Ripped Open By Metal Explosions”. Nas’ “It Ain’t Hard to Tell” and Michael Jackson’s “Human Nature” were also thrown into the mix.
And then, the Ace in the deck: Les McCann’s “Vallarta” ('77).
It played in the tinniest quality, as if it was trying so hard to push itself out of a drive-in movie speakerbox. It hit. It fucking hit like no other. Those feelings of watching those big money shows and ginger'd moms from Indianapolis deal with divorced life and her two kids, as I remember seeing it in my Brooklyn youth. Richard ‘Groove’ Holmes’ “Onsaya Joy” hit in the exact same fashion, too. Then Bob James’ “Caribbean Nights”. I was absolutely stunned out of my fucking mind.
The following week, Asmar (The Basement), always one to keep it real and spit consciousness, played Lonnie Liston Smith & The Cosmic Echoes’ “Expansions” (‘75). Then the comedown: “Aspirations” and finally “Colors Of The Rainbow”. None more accurate to describe the sounds and tonality of an isolated and introverted down summer. At that point that week’s Basement ended and it completely settled in.
It was all over for me.
The sampling parade and Lonnie Liston Smith songs tied into an era, a Borough Park childhood of spending days sitting at home playing with an Atari 2600, watching game shows (with surprise devils, computerized dragons, and lightning bolts), and late Fifties’ Looney Toons on a RGB-lens projector television. The days of my Brooklyn years continued on as an Eighties kid on the island when some of the most memorable moments, believe it or not, were these television station i.d.’s, opening and end credits, and production logos. 11 Alive, WGBH, WABC’s 4:30 Movie, WCBS’s The Late Show Intro, WPIX Channel 11 Film Festival, PBS, Magnetic Home Video, World-Northal, Viacom’s ‘V’ Of Doom, its sister Screen Gem's 'S' Of Doom, and chuckling pinball sounds with Peignot type…I can go on. They stayed with me the whole time. From that point on, I started staying in touch with myself. I always missed those obscure years living in Brooklyn. You miss them because you feel you haven’t had enough of them. Take all those moments, connect the dots, connect the stars, and get everything out of what you can that had everything to do with the era.
I started buying my own vinyl before the turn of the millennium, shortly after I started going to record stores. Only after WUSB’s Summer programming did I start pursuing the classics whenever and wherever I could. It was one way I had to keep up. A trip to what was Bay Shore’s Special Sauce, a skate and ski shop, once sold bins of vinyl records and was the first of many vinyl splurges. When I wasn’t crate-digging, I always referred to the-breaks.com, one of the first sampling sources on the net, way before WhoSampled took the lead it has now. Meanwhile, classic Seventies’ Saturday Night Live episodes followed and later discovered that my significant Yenny had GSN. You could imagine her level of tolerance to have her record these old shows for me on the regular. No, I lied. She was pretty cool about it.
YouTube came halfway into my stay at Stony Brook and I re-discovered those i.d.’s, credits, and logos. It was when I got deeper into collecting and finding those key artists that matched where I came from. John Tropea, Vic Juris, Chick Corea, and Esther Phillips. more Lonnie Liston Smith, Eric Gale, and Les McCann (again). Another very important kicker was my very first jump into library music. (Hello, KPM. Nice to meet you.) That's where I found Alan Hawkshaw, Brian Bennett, and Alan Parker. In fact, it was Parker’s “Unlimited Love” that was used for one of WABC’s movie intros-. Down the road towards the end of the Aughts, my vert first trip to High Fidelity’s old location in Amityville had me discover Phil Upchurch and Billy Cobham. That visit showed me to shop by year of release and gamble on artists I knew totally nothing about. That explains why I have two Karla Bonoff records, The Olympic Runners, Stuff, Maynard Ferguson, Urbie Green, and Ramsey Lewis.
I got re-acquainted with KPM after the turn of the decade, and made an entire mixtape / playlist dedicated to nothing but these sounds. Just so happened that I listened to nothing but Seventies, jazz / fusion, funk, groove line, and soul sounds for that entire Autumn and during Hurricane Sandy. The ultimate point of no return was when I found two very essential groups: Vinyl Archeologie and Reef Ali’s Vinyl Frontier. Could you imagine all these rare and obscure finds for samplers, crate-diggers, and producers they collectively unearthed? The sounds always featured on these groups (as well as Breaks & Samples and The Real Digging And Archeology) have shown me that it all goes to a whole new level.
These above groups are (all) the figurative time machine that takes me to places that no longer exist, ones which I’ve never experienced or been to, but felt like I have. They’ve extended my interest in jazz, soul, classic R&B, funk, groove, and fusion. To this day, they still do. This first-ever “jazz, fusion, rare groove, obscurity, resonance, vinyl finds, and sampling” showcase that aired on my radio show (Summer '13) not only made part of a personal summer mixtape, but symbolizes an all-too-important moment in my timeline with an addict ex-. Because of them, once-unknowns are now all-to-familiars to me. Gordon’s War, Starfire, Sass, Champaign, McNeal & Niles, and perhaps one of the most magical of them all, General Lee & The Space Army Band.
Since then, my affinity for these sounds have all but solidified. In the last few years, I discovered the Music DeWolfe, Patchwork, and Themes International library labels. Vinyl Archeologie and Vinyl Frontier have continued to unearth classics, resuscitate legacies, and renew interests in original artists. Omega is still doing bonus sampling / crate-digger broadcasts, and I’m always returning to find those classic programming moments for myself. With the help of Shazam and YouTube comments, I finally bullseye’d Otto Cesana & His Orchestra’s “Hi!”, Syd Dale’s “Cuban Presto”, and Reg Tilsley’s “Hold The Road”. I’m still unearthing new finds in the form of Emily Remler, Eddie Russ, Teddy Lasry, Tomorrow’s People, and Walt Barr. And, it seemed like only yesterday (Spring / Summer '18) that I once dropped $1,500 to all of the island’s record stores for post-surgery shopping therapy, and I did another record-store tour (Spring / Summer '22) in a winner-take-all fashion for double the price. If there was jazz, soul, fusion, whatever - it was mine.
I can’t say that the unreliables above (my former manager "friend" and the Jersey girl) made for vinyl music to happen. They’re isolated incidents. The sounds that our hip-hop dee-jays made possible happened regardless. I just happened to catch it. I still have the original recordings and digitized them last this year. How wild is it that the Summer has been salvaged from being a total bust for being in the right moment at the right time? How wild is it that one moment has carried on and still thrives to this day? It will continue to keep going because there’s always be something waiting to be discovered all over again. And as long as that does, the self-discovery continues, the broadcasts continue, the spending sprees continue, I continue. Here’s hoping you’ll do the same in your own right.

Eight police officers in Kenya have been suspended on suspicion of helping a suspected serial killer escape from custody, police have said.
In July police said Collins Jumaisi Khalusha had confessed to the murders of 42 women, including his wife, since 2022.
Mr Khalusha's lawyer denied the claim, saying his client had been tortured to confess.
He had been held at a police station since being arrested in July, but on Tuesday police said that Mr Khalusha and 12 others escaped after being "aided by insiders".
An incident report from the station says police discovered the detainees were missing at 05:00 local time (03:00 GMT) when officers were serving breakfast.
The 13 individuals escaped by cutting through a wire mesh roof and scaling a perimeter wall, the report added.
The 12 individuals who fled alongside Mr Khalusha were Eritrean nationals detained for entering the country illegally, police said.
Eight officers on duty at the time have been suspended, while investigations continued, police added.
Mr Khalusha, 33, was detained following the discovery of nine mutilated bodies at an abandoned quarry in the capital, Nairobi.
The victims were aged between 18 and 30 and were all killed in the same way, according to the police.
Their murders sparked shock and outrage. Many questioned how officers failed to detect that bodies were being left in a quarry around 100m (109 yards) from a police station.
They also wondered how 42 people could be murdered in the space of two years without police noticing - and how, after not suspecting anything for so long, officers made an arrest in less than three days after the bodies were discovered in the quarry.
Kenya's police watchdog also expressed some scepticism. The Independent Police Oversight Authority launched an investigation to establish whether the police themselves were linked to the killings, following “widespread allegations of police involvement in unlawful arrests [and] abductions”.
It has not yet released its findings.
Police in Kenya have been accused of scores of human rights abuses in the past - and the force is currently under investigation over deaths and abductions following recent anti-government protests.
At the time of Mr Khalusha's arrest, Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) chief Mohamed Amin said: "It is crystallising that we are dealing with a serial killer, a psychopathic serial killer who has no respect for human life, who has no respect and dignity."
Mr Khalusha's lawyer, John Maina Ndegwa, told the BBC in July: "He says he was strangled to confess. You could tell he was in distress, terrified and in anguish."
The suspect appeared in a court in Nairobi on Friday, when the magistrate ordered him to be held for a further 30 days so that police could complete their investigations, news agency AFP reported.
The discovery of the dismembered bodies came as the country was still shaken from the so-called Shakahola forest massacre, where more than 400 bodies were found in mass graves near the Indian Ocean coast.
Cult leader Paul Mackenzie had allegedly encouraged his followers to starve themselves in order to "go see Jesus".
He has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter.

MerMay 2023 Day Eight Fixer Upper
Jack was a fool.
He knew that Anti was dangerous, and yet he was okay with talking to him, letting him get close, having him roam free so close to Jack’s own living space. It was foolish behavior. Anti couldn’t understand how a merm like that had survived for so long in this world.
And yet... he... liked Jack’s foolish behavior. He... what was the word? He was... thankful for it. He didn’t want to be. But that didn’t change his feelings.
Jack’s friends were fools, too. Perhaps they were even bigger fools. At least Jack had the excuse of not remembering most of what Anti did. They didn’t. And yet, they had gone to such lengths to rescue him from those humans and their see-through containers of water. Twice. Teaming up with other humans to do so. When it would have been so much better for them all if Anti had died in those places.
The part about teaming up with other humans also confused him. He knew that Chase had halfling children, so it made sense that this group of merms knew humans somehow. But... it seemed strange to him that humans would choose merms over their own kind. Merms fought each other all the time, Anti knew that, but humans had always seemed more... together than merms. They worked together. They lived in large communities. They traveled in groups. They hunted in groups. Wouldn’t it make sense for all humans to be the same? It was confusing that they weren’t.
Anti was confused a lot of the time now.
But at least he wasn’t wandering around the ocean anymore. The shipwreck that Jack had led him to was a fine place to stay. He liked its foreboding outside appearance and the shadows of its insides. He never knew human ships could look like this. It was so much bigger than the boats he’d seen before. Though, most of the boats he’d seen before had been built to float on rivers. There was no space for them to be this large.
He decided he would sleep in the middle of the ship. Specifically, in a small room attached to a large, empty room. The small room had only one way in: through the empty rectangle opening where a door would’ve been once. Any human furniture or trinkets had long since disappeared, either rotted away or taken by other merms. Anti could fill up the empty space however he wanted.
What... were you supposed to put... in the place you lived? Anti tried to remember what other merms had in their living spaces, the few times he’d seen those spaces. Jack had a whole bunch of stuff in his little rock pool off the lagoon. Tools? Did you keep tools in here? Or weapons? Clothes or jewelry? What about neat rocks?
Whatever the case was, Anti didn’t have any of that stuff. And for the first time in a while, he was sad that he didn’t. Keeping stuff just made it hard to move around. Packing would just slow you down if you had to leave quickly. But... maybe he didn’t have to leave the shipwreck. Jack was a fool, but if that foolishness meant he wouldn’t chase Anti off—not that he could. Anti knew he was much stronger than him. But Jack could’ve brought his friends for help, and—despite how much Anti didn’t want to admit it—he wasn’t stronger than all of them together.
He was getting off track. A good chunk of time must have passed with Anti swimming circles in the shipwrecked room, thinking to himself. The point was, he wanted stuff to keep. Stuff that would be his. Stuff that would fill up the empty space that currently reminded him of being inside the humans’ see-through containers.
He poked his head through an open grate on the top of the ship—which came out to be the side of the wreck, now that it was laying down. For a moment, he got distracted opening and closing it, examining the rusted mechanism that let it do that. Even though humans clearly wanted to hunt down merms, he had to admire their... What was the word? Genius, or something like that. They were smart. Even if humans were dangerous, their stuff was kind of cool.
Perhaps... there would be more human stuff out here. Perhaps that stuff could then be his stuff. Anti grinned to himself. Yes, he liked that idea. Take that, humans.
It would be dangerous to go searching. But he could do it. He’d survived this long, he would keep surviving at any cost.
Well... maybe not at any cost. Not anymore. Trying to eliminate Jack and his friends had backfired on him. He wouldn’t be trying that again. Besides... he still owed them for rescuing him the last time. He needed some way to even the scores between them.
The water was starting to get dark. Perfect time to head out. Maybe, on his quest for finding stuff, he could figure out some way to break even with Jack and the others.

1 for tdims; 4, 5, 10, 17, 18!
thank you for the ask! <3
1 share a song that makes you think of 'there's daggers in men's smiles'
I don't necessarily think the themes match 100%, but I listened to "moon song" by phoebe bridgers a lot while writing! also "coma" by taylor acorn because it has major johnny-unlearning-bullshit vibes.
4 How many WIPs do you have right now?
oh god. if we're talking unfinished works that I haven't abandoned... thirteen. jesus fucking christ. one for good omens, four for frey & mcgrey, eight for cobra kai. but I'm only actively working on about three or four of those right now!
5 What's a fic idea you've had that you'll never write?
hm idk. i usually write something down for every distinct idea that i have. the only one that i currently haven't written anything for is a frey & mcgray idea that plays off the TPLOSH scene where holmes implies he's with watson to get out of being propositioned by a russian ballerina. because i think that'd be juicy as hell with the mcfrey dynamic. but i can't guarantee that i'll never write for it! maybe one day! it's just currently a very basic idea.
10 Is there a fic that got a different response than what you were expecting?
honestly, i was surprised by the sheer amount of readers anti-hero had because I personally don't read WIPs that often. (I know, shame on me, I'm probably missing out on many great works and the fun of reading and commenting as someone uploads!)
and i thought tdims would get a lot of 'cute fic but would have been better with karate' type comments and was really happy people liked the fencing content independently of how much previous fencing knowledge they had!
17 What's something you've learned while doing research for a fic?
My top 3 facts that I've learned during fic research:
in my research about typhoid fever i learned about the worst potato salad of all time, which was prepared in 1898 by a cook in Saarbrücken who didn't wash his hands after cleaning a toilet and subsequently killed forty people with his cooking. yikes.
if you remember the 1982 fencing championship casualty - it was actually a german fencer who fatally injured a ukrainian one (USSR at the time). when russia invaded ukraine forty years later, he took in his opponent's son-in-law and grandchildren.
I bet everyone's sick of me talking about this, but the US Supreme Court case that decided sodomy laws were unconstitutional is called Lawrence v Texas. I just think it's cool that the plaintiff shares a name with Johnny, whose fic I researched that for.
18 What's one of your favorite lines you've written in a fic?
published: it's split between these two (both from tdims. lmao. no i don't have favorite children.)
"Grief makes you into an odd animal that flinches at all sorts of normal things. But of all animals out there, none are as adaptable as humans. You can get used to the unacceptable if you just give it enough time."
and
"The heartbreak burns so brightly inside of Johnny that it called across the ocean like a lighthouse, and now the other monsters are crawling up from the depths of the sea to extinguish him before Johnny's softness can give them a bad name."
unpublished: this line from "worse by the hour" of a character in 1880s scotland coming out to his butler (pretty much the only family he has left). I wrote it and immediately said "bro!" out loud. lmfao. i feel like that means something.
“What if the McGray name dies with me?” “Then it should feel honoured to share yer grave.”

Water has always been an important aspect of Seiroku's life, and one of the few things he never came to hate about his past or part of his former band in a way. It's also why there was always a water theme to his original name and to his 'new' name so to speak. To them, water was their life. Rivers, oceans, lakes, Seiroku's familiar with it all. It's both something that has occurred on a skill level, but also on a biological level with his former band.
Many of his former band possessed a mutation in the PDE10A gene and the BDKRB2 gene. The PDE10A gene allows for a larger than average spleen size ; which in turns gives an oxygen reservoir for diving, allowing for a vastly longer dive time compared to the average person when it is paired with the BDKRB2 gene mutation, which is responsible for vasodilation and vasoconstriction which allow oxygen to go to only the most essential parts of the body. ( People with these mutation have been studied holding their breath 10-13 minutes and Seiroku leans close to 12 ). They've also been known to be able to dive to deeper depths without aid and drop at a quicker rate. All traits that Seiroku himself has, and only came to realize through his case studies on victims and idle observation once he'd left his original band. While he's not aware of the genes specific for this of course, he has realized it is a genetic trait that's essentially died off when he slaughtered his band. ( He never did hunt down though who'd already left the band, so there are still some around who have these traits. )
In terms of skills, he is a skilled sailor in a variety of different ships/boats/rafts and it is something he's kept up with over time. It's not as frequent as it once was, but especially since the Oni won't disturb him, he does enjoy sailing out at sea or river rafting or other traits. Because of this, he also possesses a rather extensive knowledge of aquatic life and hunting skills, and enjoys various forms of seafood. Similarly, he is quite good at astronavigation and is often more inclined to use that over other means, although he will consult maps, especially of areas he doesn't know. He's able to also craft out of fish bones should it be needed, like a needle ( although with his skill it isn't particularly necessary ) and other tools, and could probably figure it out with other kinds if needed. He's also well aware of using fish skin for burns and skin grafts as well as helping with anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial aspects. It IS certainly a unique kind of knowledge, and I imagine it is quite new to others to see. He doesn't think anything of it - which probably made for some interesting conversations at the Date the first time he did this. It does also unconsciously hint towards some aspects of Seiroku's past without him actually intending to. He himself doesn't realize it because it IS so engrained as a basic fact to him.
While Seiroku long lost faith in anything and doesn't care for the idea of gods or goddesses, he does still recall ways he once did celebrate. And he doesn't hate it should somewhere happen to celebrate. He's inclined to participate, though he'll say it's simply to enjoy life and have fun or to bond with others if any of the other eight happen to be with him. If not though, he does still sometimes finds himself at the water during certain times when festivities would take place. He doesn't do anything special for it but sometimes is a bit more contemplative.
#this is messy#but tldr is water is still very important to seiroku#and he refuses to sacrifice that part of his identity#even with all his rage his love for it continues#and nothing can take that away from him#᛭ — [HEADCANON] twist the threads of reality [SEIROKU INUKAWA]
