I have to confess something.

I do not like dirkjake. And before anyone jumps me, let me explain why.

The whole premise of their relationship was "if johndave did happen, but it was angsty and sort of homophobic." Like both of them had their own problems to deal with, and it affected their relationship. Speaking of which, whenever it came to their relationship, neither of them wanted to work through it. They avoided each other when it became too much, Dirk isolated himself, and Jake bothered Jane about their relationship. I'll repeat, Jake bothered another friend of his (who also had a crush on him) about the romantic relationship that was falling apart.

Since I'm already mentioning Jane, let me tell you how badly she was treated by the fandom because of this ship. Like any female character that is close with one or both of the male characters, the fandom had named her a heinous bitch for "getting in the way of the gay couple" (in some cases Roxy was too). And don't ever look at me in the eye and say that when the said couple neglected everything around them with their relationship. Jane blowing up at Jake after listening to him whine about Dirk for the umpteenth time, was in my eyes justified. imagine, ending up playing a game tho reset the universe and your dad who has protected you from assassination attempts is missing, you died at one point (and probably saw your own corpse and the corpses of your best friends), finding out offscreen that your alien friend got killed by her twin brother for dominance over the body they both possessed and then making a birthday party to hold some sort of sanity in your life and here calls that friend you had a crush on complaining about his relationship again while forgetting that it was your birthday, again.

Even when they broke up, they needed Jane and Roxy to pick up their slack and get them to be friends. I hoped that when Jane and Dirk talked about Jake that I would have probably liked the ship or found it tolerable.

But fucking NO! The Homestuck Epilog came out and the early 2010's Homestuck bullshit. Jane became an alien-hating-fashist (I don't care what anyone says. It's was very out of character) and made Dirk and Jake some kind of "tragic, uwu couple that are still pining for each other."

There was a lot I didn't like about the writing in Homestuck, but the retconning of the characters (Vriska and Gamzee included) was too much.

ummm honestly i havent interacted with the fandom that much since 2016 so idk what opinions are popular or not . if i had to pick one id say i dont think dirk and jake really work as a romantic relationship and i read jake as hella aro

but then again there are a bunch of aro jake truthers out there so idek if thats an unpopular opinion..? anyway it could just be me being aro but i didn't really see any signs of jake having romantic desire for dirk . this particular passage was incredibly damning to me as someone who has also tried to like somebody romantically because i thought that was 'naturally' supposed to happen

cosigning a lot of this. but/and, following the talk about the transmasc readings, im gonna be real, i kinda hate those for the beta kids? not just for john but for dave too. like.

ok i wanna be clear. i want homestuck to have good transmasc rep. i want that dearly. i want this comic queered to the nines and if i had my way we'd have stuck a t needle in yiffany's ass years ago. that dog deserves a wispy mustache. jane too lets get him on that shit too. i know roxy is transmasc in the meat timeline but theyre kinda doin jack shit with that so i want somethin better for yall.

i add this preface to be clear that im not against transmasc rep or think its distracting from transfem rep or anything (tho as juney said up top these headcanons Are rhetorically used to do so by bad actors within the community. but im not saying that about the work itself)

but if you think any of the kids in the beta timeline were childhood transitioners you straight up are not engaging with the story. at the start of homestuck all four of the beta kids are homophobic shame-filled little twerps. jade goes on a tirade about how shes not a furry (which is why shes the one exception i have for thinking the betas should always be depicted as being the agab the comic gives them, because while shes clearly afab she is Thematically trans so making her such in out of context art tracks). john is famously on the record as not being a homo sexual, and questions absolutely nothing about his life to the point he believes his dad is a busking clown. dave is casually homophobic and misogynistic. rose is. rose. their arcs are about accepting the parts of them that theyre ashamed of. skaia is a self-actualization engine with a terrible cost.

the transmasc read of dave especially has always bewildered me. his entire arc is about unlearning the standard of masculinity that was thrust on him as his birthright and obligation. he is inherently and unavoidably a cis boy at the start of the comic and the primary theme of his entire character is unlearning the habits and grappling with the traumas that come from being raised to be the macho man burly brawling hero. how is a character about the terrible cost of being raised to Be A Man good or desirable transmasc rep?

my point here is that i think pretty much all of the readings of characters being trans from the start in homestuck are just... fucking piss weak? the beta kids at least. i could see the alpha striders being transmasc, sure. but the betas? theyre. theyre so unavoidably cis at the start.

trans headcanons work for most media where the writers or at least their higher ups wouldnt dare make a trans character textual, if they even wanted to, which they dont. but when talking about an extremely queer webcomic made by a nonbinary person who handed it off to a team of queer people when it stepped down?

all trans configurations should demand better than "i think theyre probably trans before the story starts <3" and start demanding more june egberts. transitioning is a big part of life that tends to happen later in life. it being a part of a characters larger story should be expected, not written off as a headcanon. june egbert is someone finally doing this shit right and yet all anyone is doing is suppressing it in favor of anti-textual headcanons. demand better from your fiction! demand june!

June Egbert is, and always has been incredibly fascinating to me because of just, how many factors have conspired to make Homestuck fans show their collective transmisogynistic asses.

The main character of Homestuck transitioning is a planned future plot point for the official continuation of homestuck, that was spoiled in advance by a fan making a joke about finding some toblerones Andrew Hussie the author of homestuck hid in a cave.

The current main writers of Homestuck: Beyond Canon have went on record in an AMA confirming that this was indeed always the plan, even before they took up the project.

In spite of these facts, the general consensus among certain homestuck fans seems to be that "June Egbert" is purely a headcanon for the original comic that was "made canon" by a "Toblerone Wish" (a concept that didn't even exist at the time)

For a variety of reasons, the "canonicity" of the postcanon official continuations of homestuck is a mattter of much debate, (though a debate that most homestuck fans seem to err on a side of "it's not canon at all in the slightest," something the writers have feelings on I'm sure.)

All of these factors combined leave the concept of "June Egbert" in a very nebulous place. It's assumed by most to just be an "ascended headcanon" that was shoehorned in, it's a spoiler so it hasn't happened yet in any official media, and the official media it will eventually happen in is regarded by some to be nothing more than glorified fanfic.

If someone is talking about June Egbert, and you don't like the concept of June Egbert, you have your pick of a million different excuses for why she's fake and gay and not worth discussing and bad writing and just the authors doing a gay dumbledore*, paying lip service to representation while actually doing nothing.

And of course, lots of people *don't* like June Egbert! Rather than being introduced as transfem from the start, she's in this nebulous position of discovery where people have to truly reckon with the idea of a "Pre-transition Trans Woman."

You can try to write off *some* of the backlash as transphobia, because obviously not everyone in this fandom is gonna be cool about trans people.

But there's no shortage of fans just dying to tell you about how much they like reading her as transmasc, or the idea of her being nonbinary or genderqueer or genderfluid, or literally anything besides a trans woman. And since they're fine with all those other interpretations, there's obviously no implicit biases driving their distaste for the concept! (if you want to try explaining the concept of "transmisogyny" to people like this you're braver than I.)

you can trust them when they say it's *just* a problem with whether or not it makes sense with the writing, or it just doesn't feel right somehow, or any of the thousands of excuses that this writing situation gives them to just Not Like It.

It's just, so interesting to me. There's not a lot of characters out there that get a trans arc in this way, that leaves room for open denialism and insistence that we have our trans cake and eat it too... Because Homestuck is a timeline spanning multiverse story, lots of people seem to want it to be an alternate timeline thing. Assuring us we can have this character share space with a non-transitioning version of herself and it won't be weird or imply gross things about trans people.

If you ask me it feels like a plotline that'd be really good for exploring some gender horror though, finding your true self and then being demoted to a footnote, an alternate version, because everyone around you likes your pre-transition self more....

Anyway I have no broader point beyond "hey look at this isn't this kinda weird. You don't get this kinda stuff often!"

*side note: it's a little ghoulish I think to compare "a future trans plot point that hasn't been given the chance to even happen yet, in an already famously queer piece of media, from a nonbinary author" to "some stupid shit done by the literal most famous transphobe of all time" but that's perhaps a discussion for later.

"Your honor, these characters are victims of fanon-as-canon widespreading! There are antis out there who will raise hell if you say Dirk is anything other than gay when it's literally canon that Dirk Strider states he doesn't like the label gay. Meanwhile, Rose Lalonde also dates both men and women in canon and has never outright stated what her sexuality is, yet antis will also raise hell if you say she is anything but a lesbian.

Their dynamics are complex and nuanced throughout the webcomic. They are both clever and self important, and their banter is delicious. They both share the vice of wanting to control the narrative of the lives they are stuck in, and this ties them together far tighter than any blood ties.

Also, in Homestuck 2 (which is dubiously canon), Rose Lalonde quite literally leaves her wife to join Dirk in creating a new universe with him. This then blossoms into a passionate rivalry where they both see who could create the ideal universe. They're always pushing each other to greater heights.

Also, the fact that Dirk wanted Rose to come with him-- even choosing her over his own pseudo-brother who he looked up to to an extreme degree-- goes to show that he values her mind above all others.

Dirk is a hard person to impress or to crack the impersonal shell of, but I strongly feel that Rose Lalonde (especially with her penchant for psychology which ties well with his interests in philosophy) is exactly the right person to crack his shell."

Hiii I really love your art and was wondering if you wouldnt mind showing what kind of brushes you use for your recent drawings thank you so much and i look forward to your future arts!

Of course! I've answered this a few times before but have never really tagged it properly, and I also realised that I've never actually explained what I use each brush for so I'll do that now!:

I'm gonna go through each of these brushes in order (and if i remember correctly, I'll link the top two since they arent default CSP brushes). (NOTE: almost all of these brushes have anti-aliasing turned off so that it can look more crispy and pixely!!! there is one exception to this that I will get into)

For this brush, I exclusively use it for sketching, it's advertised for inking digital manga panels, but with how the pen pressure is I feel like it adds form to my sketches

This brush, Sleuth-y Pen, is what I use mostly for MSPFA panels, mostly for lining, but sometimes for sketching too if I'm having a hard time with my usual sketching pen. It's really good if you want to replicate the homestuck style, and good for broad strokes on smaller canvases. The only issue is that the brush isn't great for that style if you use it on a larger canvas (ideally you would want 650 x 450) and can be especially messy if you're trying to get smaller details, such as open mouths, and certain facial details. I use another brush for that, which I will get into soon.

My second use for the sleuthy pen is for lineart on larger canvases in my usual artstyle! It has a texture to it that I like, as I like having my art appear a little rough around the edges, and the issue regarding small details isn't nearly as prominent of a problem

Almost done! Now we have the G-pen, a default CSP brush! This used to be one of my top 2 pens, along with its counterpart "Real G-pen" but nowadays I use it for two things: clean-up during rendering (usually getting those smaller details done that the sleuthy pen has difficulty with) and for doing SOME MSPFA panels (Vast Error, for example)

As you can see here, Liaaam's face is a little smoother than the rest of him, that's because I use the G-pen for those details, to keep things a lot cleaner! As for my other use, Vast Error's style from my understanding is a lot more "smooth" and "clean" which is why I exclusively use the G-pen for it, you can also make a lot of thick, juicy brush strokes with it which I feel works really well for the hair and folds in the clothes!

Finally, the Real G-pen, another default. This one is very similar to the last, its only differences are that it's slightly sharper and ever so slightly more messy. It's almost like a medium between the sleuth-y pen, and the g-pen.

I'll be honest, I don't use this pen much anymore, BUT, I still consistently use it for one thing and one thing only: Friendsim sprites. If you want to make friendsim sprites I highly suggest this pen, and making sure it's set to "weak" antialiasing. If you want to go the extra mile, I like to use a lasso-fill tool to block out shadows in all of my art, although if I'm using a rougher brush I'll usually do that manually. There's also other brushes I've been using more for rendering full pieces, such as a "rake brush" and a "design pencil" with low pressure to get details like blush down without making it too intense.
