The average HOTD viewer watches the scene where Otto pressures Alicent into "seducing" Viserys and decides Alicent is evil and betraying her friend. To them, Alicent isn't the victim in the scene - its Rhaenyra (and Viserys).

Alicent being overwhelmed while holding her kids? A sign that she's a bad person/mother. She spends most of her teen years pregnant and giving birth to one kid after the other? She chose to do what her father ordered her to do. The average GOT/HOTD viewer despises the women who follow patriarchal rules. The average GOT viewer thinks you're a villain if you're NOT not like other girls. HBO and D&D absolutely created an audience that is fundamentally incapable of viewing Alicent as a victim

Why is everyone pretending that Aegon stole the throne almost behind Alicent's back? Have you already forgotten that he wanted to escape? That he was crying during the coronation? Alicent, you put him on the throne, and now you're sacrificing him like he's a lamb for the slaughter? A son for a son? What about Jaehaerys? Exactly how many sons must die to repay Luke's death? In an attempt to make a feminist show, Hotd has Rhaenys be totally cool with her man cheating on her, has Baela refusing her mother’s claim, has Rhaena reduced to a nursemaid with little to no scenes with her twin sister, has Rhaenyra start a war for a throne because daddy said she could have it, has Alicent dithering around with no influence over the court that she’s ruled for over a decade, has Helaena offer up a necklace instead of her own life to try and save her children, also completely removes the fact that Helaena fell into complete despair and insanity due to this immense trauma, has Nettles–a commoner who learnt how to ride a dragon-erased, has Saera Snow-a major proponent of the Pact of Ice and Fire and an RLJ foreshadowing, not to mention an enriching factor to Cregan and Jace-removed, has Jeyne Arryn be totally cool siding with the man who murderered a fellow female liege, has—

Alicole was underwhelming, but B&C takes the cake as the worst adaptation of a single asoiaf/f&b event so far:

It was so rushed and whitewashed and did not focus on Helaena at all. Where is Helaena pleading for her son's life and offering up her own life instead? Where is Maelor whom Helaena was coerced to offer up as a sacrifice and does not bear to look at? Where is Heleana being forced to make a decision that haunts her entire life? She is obviously traumatized by what happened, but having her just say "they killed the boy" does not do her character and her grief justice. I really hope we get to see more of Helaena in episode 2 because it would be really upsetting if the show just brushes her off.

Not to mention Alicent's absence from the events of B&C. Alicent was really there, worried for her daughter's and grandchildren's lives, and was the first person to offer Helaena some comfort and consolation. The more I think about it the more mad I get because we got robbed of what could have been a truly harrowing and distressing scene that would do the events and the characters justice. Book!B&C was about two mothers and their shared agony, pain, and grief. It could have been powerful and shocking from an acting perspective alone if they had followed the events of the book.

Alicent’s relationships with her children can never be perfect and healthy because they’re objectively broken from their onset. And I’m so tired of seeing brain dead takes comparing the “superior” relationship Rhaenyra has with her kids to Alicent and her kids as some sort of gotcha.

Alicent’s exposure to motherhood isn’t on her terms in any conceivable way. Her children are the products of marital rape and coercion. They are conceived and born when she is a young teenage girl 15-18, well before she is ready to have them. They are born in quick succession with no opportunity for her to recover. And, they are from a man that not only does she not love but who neglects and belittles her.

All these factors severely damage Alicent’s ability to connect with her children in their infancy. And can you blame her given the circumstances?

She’s not ready to have them at all, so she doesn’t know how to properly mother them. And she likely resents them at least a bit in the early stages because they are the physical manifestation of not only her rape but the life she is trapped in. And that likely compounds with severe guilt because these are her babies, why doesn’t she feel the love and joy she’s supposed to?

And yet. She still loves and cares for them. She holds them as babies (despite being a baby herself) and dutifully cares for them even though she could simply dump them off with a nursemaid. She charges with a knife at Rhaenyra for them. She stands between them and a dragon from them. She betrays her closest companion of her childhood for them. She defies the king and their father for them.

I know that Alicent makes some crucial mistakes that ends up hurting her children. And I know that the scenes we see with Alicent and her kids often show her lack of connection to them. But despite the fact that her relationship to them can be nothing but fractured at the onset. There is so much passion and love and devotion she has for them.

These are not scenes of a woman who is a bad mother. These are scenes of a mother who adores her children and would do anything for them. But who can only love them roughly because she never had an opportunity to love them gently. Their very existence was never gentle for her and never fostered through love.

Alicent’s relationship with her kids may be broken. But it’s not her fault that it is. And no matter what there is love and it is her motivation. So stop acting like she is a bad mother when she’s fighting like hell to breed a relationship with them that is fostered in connection.

And yes, Daemon's daughters (Baela & Rhaena) and Daemyra's sons (Aegon III & Viserys II) survived the dance. Not Alicent. Sad. Nah, I'm joking. It's just as well that this bitch is dead. Aegon joked about burning the Riverlands and people found it funny. He stopped a council meeting to make his master of coin give a pony ride to that annoying ass little boy and it was seen as cute. He made stupid and uninformed decisions when on the throne and people think he’s a good ruler because he’s thinking of the small folk. He killed a dozen innocent rat catchers but he’s acting out of anger and it’s justified because his son was killed by one of them.

Meanwhile young Rhaenyra being disagreeable during a marriage tour makes her a spoiled irresponsible brat, her not wanting to be a mother at 14 and go through what her mother did makes her a pick me, her expecting to be the queen after her father, the ruler of a hereditary monarchy promised her the throne makes her an idiot who didn’t earn her inheritance.

For EVERY single thing she does, she’s villainized and seen as unworthy for the throne. If she was the one talking about burning lord Tully and the Riverlands, we wouldn’t be hearing the end of how mad and unfit the tyrannical she is. But who gaf if an idiot with a cock says it. No wonder they’ve been writing her the way they do.

And I don’t even want to hear it from you idiots saying “Rhaenyra fans want her to be innocent!!” When the entire fucking planet has been anticipating her cruelty since the premiere.
