I love that final part of the one ask that you said about how 12 stressed to 13 to be nice. Like, Doctors orders be more nice. 12 was like "don't be a meaner, learn from my mistakes! I'm a cunt!' And she did. She's angry. She has every right to be, but like, a tiny, angrier crazy scot is giving her the full big sad blue-green-grey eyes Treatment in her head begging her to not be A Bitch.

I totally get Dhawan after Gomez. As someone who struggles with addiction and also lots of emotional issues regarding anger and aggression/impulsivity, I get the whole "Let's try to be better. 💜 I have to make that person who believes in the possibility of me being better proud!" To "uh oh, I slipped up." to "fuck it, coke, club, tequila, fight my support system, bite that person over there, more coke, a sip of beer, arson." Like...it's very relatable and so people who are like "oh but Missy was good! At least halfway she was trying! Dhawan is so obviously not! So he must come BEFORE!" like....they don't get it. The cycle of trying and failing is always renewing in different ways. Just like regeneration. It's a lottery, really.

My take on it is I think there are ways you can make sense of the progression through headcanon (as you've done here for example - I think that would absolutely make for a compelling angle on the character). The bigger issues are 1. I don't think the narrative itself makes any effort to explore that or even cares at all, and 2. the Master going straight back to pure evil is the least interesting thing you can do with their character after the possibilities Missy's arc left open.

(I think you could very easily have still kept them an antagonist but done something new with them - a subtle shift in their motives, perhaps - and I would've been perfectly happy with that, but to me what we got does feel like a character reset that never justifies itself.)

Dhawan being pre-Missy is still worse to me though simply because that makes me feel like I have no reason to care about the Master's development at all or the development of their relationship with the Doctor if we're just going to be bouncing around to different points in their timeline (which is a major issue I have with the way Big Finish handles a lot of character meetups).
