Castles in the Air is LIVE on Kickstarter

The wait is over; we're live! Castles in the Air (CitA) is a tabletop RPG written by me and inspired by the novels of Louisa May Alcott and L.M. Montgomery. Based on the award-winning Good Society system, CitA tells stories similar to those in Little Women and Anne of Green Gables. Set in the late 19th century, it follows a group of children who grow up together and remain connected even as they head their separate ways. It’s a game about their dreams, cares and struggles, their personal growth and failings and above all else, what they mean to each other as years pass.

I have fallen down an RPG rabbit hole and now I am homebrewing a campaign that is very Anne of Green Gables meets fantasy meets the Good Society RPG. It is taking place in a fictional fantasy town called Pebblebank in the country of Lundy in what is essentially the 1890s.

Characters are students at the local school who are coming of age and navigating life as they go through classes, chores, social interactions, county fairs, barn dances, late night rendezvous, holidays, and more. Magical shenanigans! Hijinks! Bad decisions! Teen angst! Gossip! Scandal! Friendship! Romance! Possible death? Who knows! Not me yet!

I have google docs created. Pinterest boards curated. Liberal use of fantasy name generator. I'm trying to think of a name and so far all I got is Flight of Fancy as like a placeholder so if anyone has a better idea let me know

This is going to take up all my time now.

Hey! Happy Blorbo Blorbsday! In a modern AU what would your OCs favourite movies or games be?

Hey, Jacques! I'm gonna do my FSF babies for this one, and it ended up being less specific movies and more just what their movie taste is in general, but oh well:

Tris: Doesn't really watch movies or play games much, but she likes "a slice of life" movies, mainly comedies or just silly little sitcoms. She also wouldn't be opposed to something historical, depending on what time period it is and how it's written.

Prince Kaye: He likes rpg games, particularly of the more medieval kind, and he's also partial to movies where the dog dies (read: Where the Red Fern Grows and Old Yeller), he does cry but doesn't mind that he does.

Snow: She likes fantasy, but specifically the 80s flavor of fantasy that's just weird all over and feels like a fever dream with crazy special effects. Her faves are Pan's Labrynth and Neverending Story. It's not her favorite but she also likes Willow.

Lan: technically not movies, but they like anything Shakespeare. Particularly adaptions of Shakespeare that are a little controversial on the accuracy, they like to analyze it. Their favorite is the 1990 adaptation of Hamlet with Mel Gibson. They're also partial to anything theatrical, so they will watch movie musicals and go to Broadway plays (Elliot goes with them).

Cassandra: Might be a little on the nose, but the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy (the other movies do not exist), and the Little Mermaid. Even if she wasn't a pirate and a former mermaid, it still feels right for her adventurous and clever personality. Plus she has a little fictional crush on Elizabeth, Will, and Prince Eric.

Erica: Rom-coms. She's a hopeless romantic and loves to have a good laugh, of course she loves romcoms. She also ironically likes Hallmark movies, just because she loves to criticize them as she watches and ship the two guys in the love triangle that the girl is backed into (because let's be honest, those two guys always have some kind of sexual tension going on).

Prince Monty: Indiana Jones movies, they're exactly his idea of fun. He also likes The Mummy and the Mummy Returns from the 90s. He loves the thrill of adventure movies (typically featuring archaeology or ancient curses), and he has a bit of a fictional crush on Rick O'Connell in the Mummy movies. (Hestia hates him for his taste in movies, and they always fight on movie nights when it's one of their turns to pick). He likes adventure video games as well, like Legend of Zelda and Assassin's Creed.

Max: Not much of a fiction guy, he prefers nature documenteries and other nonfiction media. He does, however, like any movies with Robin Williams in them, those movies are very comforting to him (me too buddy). His favorites are the Night at the Museum and Jumanji (the original one in case that wasn't clear).

Elliot: He's a theater kid like Lan, literally anything Shakespeare, theater, or musicals kind of media. His favorites are Twelfth Night, As You Like It, Hamilton, Hadestown, Music Man and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. This boy is a theater kid, and Lan is right there with him. They go watch musicals together.

Hestia: She and Tris are similar in that they like more "slice of life" and "realistic" stuff. She also likes things that are a bit more historical and classic literature type movies. Her favorites are Little Women (she prefers the 1994 version, but isn't opposed to the 2019 version), Anne of Green Gables (prefers the 1985 adaptaion), and Pride and Prejudice. They have a bit more fantasy but she also likes Anastasia (the movie) and Disney's Alice in Wonderland.

Raven: ..... Princess Bride. He loves Princess Bride. He doesn't really like watching new stuff sometimes, so he usually sticks to a few movies that he knows and loves. He loves Princess Bride for many reasons, but the big one is that he projects his and Sapphire's relationship onto Westley and Buttercup a little too much. He also likes Encanto, Lego Batman, and Nightmare Before Christmas. He also likes to play Legend of Zelda and Super Mario World, but doesn't play video games very often.

Sapphire: Her hyperfixations change every week, and she never sticks to one genre. However, if she's in between hyperfixations or can't choose because of choice paralysis, there are some movies she likes to fall back on: The Rescuers and The Rescuers Down Under, The Lego Movie, Coraline, Antman and the Wasp, Thor: Ragnarok, Clue (1985), Wall-E, and Lilo and Stitch.

Triveya: Loves the Lord of the Rings movies, and anything else fantasy. Anything magical fantasy is her jam. She also likes the Tales of Arcadia series (Wizards is her favorite show in the franchise), Hocus Pocus (the original), Wandavision, Tangled, and the Owl House series.

comfort clothes — my BeTS crewneck! I associate it with my happiest moment and the material is so cozy and soft. I don’t really like black clothes bc my wardrobe is very pink but this is one of the few black pieces I love to bits! I’m planning to paint/embroider the svt logo and fill it with their names or title tracks

comfort book — anne of green gables. I rarely read books nowadays but I inhaled the green gables series when I got the collection. I love the netflix adaptation for it so I got my hands on the book series to stay in that world a bit longer. also anne/gilbert’s relationship is so cute :’( I ship them so hard!

comfort game — stardew valley or any ‘cozy’ life simulation games. I enjoy playing these a lot bc I like the whole aspect of foraging and building relationships with npcs. Recently been playing potions permit and it’s been really fun.

planet zoo and bear & breakfast are also my go to stress relief cozy games. The management and design aspects are really fun!

If I’m feeling more rpg-ish I always go for kingdom hearts. it’s the only reason why I get new consoles for each main title game in the series

20.  Favourite video games?

The Dragon Age series, hands down. I’ve played all three and I love them so much, especially Inquisition (I’ve played it through like three times haha). I just love the world and the characters. My close second favourite is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Basically I love fantasy RPGs hahaha.

I don’t think I could ever pick just one. I have so many favourites. One from my childhood though is Anne of Green Gables, I wanted to be like her so badly. Also I just thought it would be super badass to smash a slate over someboy’s head haha.

Hey, what was the first couple/none couple you ever shipped? And what did you like about it? :)

This is such a fun question. Okay, so when I was six I saw Labyrinth in the movie theatre and I always loved Jareth and Sarah. And then my sister was very into the 80s productions of Anne of Green Gables so I love love loved Anne and Gilbert. But I didn't know that was shipping. I loved Pride and Prejudice and have reread it every year since I was nine - and I definitely was shipping Lizzie and Darcy.

But my first foray into actual fanfiction was Harry and Ginny from HP. That love only lasted about two months (summer 2005) before I accidentally read a Draco/Ginny fic and fell in love with THAT ship instead. I got VERY involved with that corner of the HP fandom. Wrote lots of things. Moderated several fic exchanges. Wrote in two chaptered RPGs. It was a great time for fandom.

What I loved about them? Um.. I loved the tempestuous red-headed Juliet and the cold/spoiled/abused icy-blond Romeo from families that hated eachother. I loved the overcoming of prejudices. The sarcastic and smirking boy and the girl with the short hexing temper. Magic. Politics. Pink-haired babies. I just loved them.

Nicknames: CylonAlyna is from a Battlestar Galactica RPG game I was a part of long time ago. I miss that RPG and my character, although she was a psycho and a drunk. :D

Height: 1,75m (metric is the only system that makes sense to me)

Orientation: Lesbian (although I do have a straight crush on Brad Pitt.)

Nationality: I’m from the land of pierogi - Poland. ;)

Favorite fruit: Strawberries

Favorite season: Summer

Favourite flower: Cacti because they don’t need any attention.

Favourite scent: I honestly don’t know.

Favorite color: I’m blue daba dee daba daa.

Favorite animal: Dogs and elephants

Coffee, tea or hot chocolate: Tea

Average hours of sleep: 5-6 hours. I like sleeping but it’s kinda a waste of time for me when I could do so many things (like procrastinate in front of my console. :D)

Cat or dog person: Dog. I like cats, but I love dogs.

Favourite fictional character: If I were to choose one that was always my favorite, then there’s only Anne Shirley. I read Anne of Green Gables so many times the book is literally falling apart, but I won’t buy a new one. And of course I love Xena & Gabrielle (pretty obvious when someone goes through my blog), Batwoman, Ikrie (HZD) and many, many more.

Number of blankets you sleep with: I don’t use a blanket. I have a... eiderdown? Is that what it’s called? A quilt with feather inside? And I have one (it’s super warm)

Dream Trip: Japan, Canada and Ukraine.

I’m briefly resurfacing from a combination of writing and gaming.

Thank you to @kawaii-ash for tagging me, and apologies to @kurokiorya who tagged me in something similar ages ago that I don’t think I ever fully answered.

Rules: Answer the twenty questions and tag some people.  Alrighty then!

Name: Lost to the depths of time.  Apparently “The Doctor” is already taken, so I’l go with “Imp”.  My two online names of any note are Impracticaldemon (ImpracticalOni) and Impracticalmagic.  Which is odd, because (other than with plushies) I’m really quite practical.

Nickname: Little Demon, Chibi Oni, Oni-Author-sama

Birthday: November 15 (the “Ides of November”)

Zodiac Sign: Scorpio

Height: 5′2" (”Shorty” is not a nickname I endorse, but it has been used.)

Orientation:  To the best of my knowledge, straight/hetero-sexual/romantic 

Nationality: Canadian 

Favorite Fruit: Wild blueberries

Season: Autumn/Fall (the later part, after it stops being randomly hot)

Favorite Flower: I have a soft spot for Forget-me-nots, even though they’re “just” a wildflower.  The fragrance of honeysuckle and lilac.  The elegance of irises. Giant white chrysanthemums because they remind me of my mum.  Truthfully, I’m a sucker for nice flowers, although it’s taken a long time to realize it.  Roses are wonderful too.  Oh, and blue hydrangeas - they’re just cool.

Favorite Book: I have read and cherished many books, but I must admit that I’ve re-read the second book in Anne McCaffery’s Harper Hall trilogy more times than I can count. The early Anne of Green Gables books (the first two especially), will always be close friends.  Pride and Prejudice.  The very first Harry Potter (there’s nothing quite like the first book of a really good “magical world” series). Good Omens (Neil Diamond/Terry Practchett) is wild but amazing (highly recommended if you enjoy imaginative, intelligent religious satire and a really good story).  Georgette Heyer’s Frederica (regency romance with some of the best humour I’ve ever read).

Coffee/Tea/Hot Cocoa: Green tea (with lemon), English Breakfast tea, chamonile/peppermint tea, and hot chocolate.  Not coffee.

Average sleep hours: It varies from 0 to about 6-7, with very occasional days where I’m unconscious for 10 hours trying to catch up.

Cat or Dog: I prefer plushies.  I realize that makes me evil (the good guys always love cats and/or dogs), but somehow I’m not wired to love pets the way everybody else does.  This is one of my guiltiest secrets, and now you all know. 

Favorite fictional character:  At the moment, probably Saitou Hajime (Haku).  I’ve read an awful lot of books, though (not to mention all the PC and video games with wonderful characters), so I have a lot of "favourites”.  The person I wanted to be growing up was Anne from Anne of Green Gables - but I’m not.  I’m just not a “free spirit” like she is.  My absolute favourite character in the Marvel/DC universes was J’onn J’onnz (Martian Manhunter).  Talk about picking the most obscure of the original Justice League!  I’m a fan of Hermione Granger - oh, and Minerva McGonnagall.  ...and on and on...

Top 3 Favorite Otome Games: That’s a surprisingly specific question.  Haku.ouki.  Probably Amnesia, despite it’s flaws--it’s the game that got me hooked in the first place.  After that I’d have to review the list of games I’ve played to make a decent choice.  I haven’t played any of the Voltage games or MysMe.  Honestly, Code Realize is probably #3 right now, but there are some very good independent otome games out there at the moment.

Fictional place you want to visit: Probably lots of places, but  right now I’m drawing a blank.  Something like Diagon Alley would be neat, but honestly, going to a Star Trek Next Generation type of future also  appeals.  So many of the places I want to visit would be dangerous or compel me to wear uncomfortable clothes.

Top 3 countries you want to visit: 1. I want to go back to the UK (I loved England, Scotland and Wales when I was there). 2. Ireland (I never got to see it).  3. I’d love to see northern Europe.

NOTE:  I’d like to go to Japan and Egypt and China and many other places with incredible historical potential.  However, I’m allergic to sun and heat.  So I’d have to find a way to go when it’s cold (more feasible for Japan and China, probably).

Top 3 favorite songs:  Sorry, I’m just kind of burned out and I love music but I’m horrible with song and artist names.  At any given time it could be some 80s stuff, or something new I happened to like from an AMV, or a song from a musical (Disney or Gilbert & Sullivan, who knows?!).  My musical taste is eclectic, to put it mildly.

Appearance: About 5′4″, curly brown hair dyed red but I’m due to redo it, with a side shave; glasses, brown eyes. I dress for comfort, but also to look as queer as possible: in the winter, leggings and oversized sweaters; in the summer, crop tops and cut-off shorts; an oversized jean jacket covered in pins; in January I’m shaving all my hair to raise money for cancer so I’m inching towards a more butch appearance.

Personality: Zack Evans said it best: “I’m an extroverted introvert: I get my energy from alone time, but then when i’m around people, it’s on, let’s go! but it drains me.” I also get really passionate about stuff real fast, I’m creative, and I’m the mom friend. I also have no idea if I love her because I relate, or if I read her books so young that she shaped my entire personality, but I have a lot in common with Anne of Green Gables

Ability: I’m a good cook (I’m great at creating recipes, knowing which flavours go well together); a good writer; I’m good at finding unexpected fixes to problems (thinking outside the box)

🍂 #top10favouritecharacters 🍂 I was tagged by the wonderful @bookish.hedonist to do this tag and it was a lot harder to narrow down my favourite characters than I expected. Also, these are my favourite book characters.
