This is why I'm generally wary of social media, and especially wary of the way so much of it is explicitly marketed toward children, who tend to be much more vulnerable to this sort of thing.
More things to look out for:
Anything where "propaganda" is used as a buzzword in order to discourage people from doing their own research rather than to encourage it.
All sources of information except the ones WE personally subscribe to are complicit in a massive media cover-up. You are not immune to propaganda. The latter is, of course, true. You aren't immune to propaganda. And neither is Tumblr-user @objectivetruth. Look up the buzzwords he uses, note their origins and associations, and keep your eyes open for fallacious rhetorical shit. Be on the lookout for sensationalistic journalism always, but if some internet stranger's telling you he's a more credible source than literally every news site by sole virtue of his not being a news site . . . no, he isn't.
Any space where unfamiliarity with certain terminology is met with hostility.
The fact that you don't know what finning is and haven't done the slightest bit of research to correct that issue on your own proves you don't care about marine life. Go back to your fucking oil rig, shark-killer. Now, a lot of this comes from a place of frustration with the lack of visibility certain issues face (and a lot of these issues are, in fact, important, which is why I cite finning as an example). But this particular approach equates unfamiliarity with complicity. Take it as a sign that the person speaking cares more about riling up a like-minded mob than about being informative.
Generalizations and assumptions.
My college professors taught us to watch for this in our essays. "Since the dawn of time, humans have always . . ." is a common opener. Here's an exercise: examine the experiences you think do apply to that opener. What defines the human experience, in your opinion? What sets us apart from "the animals"? Whatever just popped into your head, it probably isn't applicable across the board. Now examine the experiences you think are universal among all kind people. Love, perhaps? Empathy? Nope, not even those. And radical communities often take advantage of these assumptions, recognizing people's tendency to fear the new and confusing. All these self-proclaimed "aromantics" are a lot of psychopaths who need corrective therapy. Examine this more closely, and you'll notice a lot of false equivalency. The absence of (my specific culturally-inherited vision of) romance = mental disorder = moral bankruptcy. The expectation here is that you'll accept these conclusions as given, since your experience is, in theory, culturally standard.
Reblog bait, or whatever equivalent exists on other sites.
I see people across the political spectrum discussing issues on the internet, and invariably, there's someone in the notes soliciting their fellow political community members for frequent redeclarations of membership: "Reblog if you're a good person!" "Reblog to piss off an [insert ideology here]!" "Mutuals, reblog or I'll block you." Followers, spread the good word or you'll be expelled from OUR community. Spread the word to kill a dissenter. Spread the word to reinforce your claim to morality. I just filter out this shit. It's not productive commentary.
Slogans and blurbs.
They spread like wildfire, and they frequently reduce complicated problems to uncomplicated rage bait. Social media and radical internet spaces thrive on the low attention spans of their users, so they often go hand in hand. I cannot stress this enough: research the thing before you join the tag club.
My last bit of advice . . .
When in doubt, gather more information.
A lot of radical communities have a fundamental belief in the existence of an "endpoint" for learning. Universal adherence to this particular belief system would result in a perfect society if anyone actually listened to us. In truth, that endpoint does not exist. No philosophy is without fault. Even science is subject to the failings of conventional wisdom; it's fundamentally rooted in the constant overturning of existing theories. Despite what the "moral perfectionism" side of Tumblr would have you believe, progress is a continual process of trial and error. Question your own community. Read what you find unpleasant, and ask yourself why. If the answer to that question is, "it's common knowledge", ask yourself why that is. You won't always be wrong; sometimes you will. Be empowered by that knowledge. You're at no shortage of opportunities to grow.
okay. listen. if you ever find yourself falling into a new ideological circle, pay attention. if you notice that you’re among people who define themselves as part of an “in-group” with a pre-prepared human “enemy” to constantly rail against—if everyone fantasizes about the mental state of these loathsome monsters, if they participate in witch hunts or (perhaps worse) poke bears and court harassment on purpose to comfort each other over—get the fuck out. you haven’t been enlightened to some grand conspiracy, there are no evil “enemies” or “degenerates” trying to rip apart the fabric of society, and you do not have the moral duty to “enlighten” anyone to whatever you think the “truth” is. it’s neither safe nor normal to spend hours of your day fighting with strangers on the internet
a lot of people wear this shit like a badge of honor, but it’s also not normal to hide your “in-group” status as a form of martyrdom, relishing when the “enemy” slips up around you. it’s comforting in the moment, but in the long run, you’re alienating yourself from the world outside of your bubble. the more you alienate yourself, the more vulnerable and lonely you become, and the harder it is to reject the comfort of belonging to the “in-group”
i’m writing this from the perspective of someone who grew up in a cesspool of awful, cult-like rural churches—which is its own situation—but i see similar shit happening in online communities all the time, both within and 800 miles outside of my own ideological principles. yes, every toxicass radfem i block seems to be trapped in a version of this vicious cycle, but i also see it happening in random queer circles and niche fandom communities. no one is immune, not even me. i’ve watched people fall into this shit and never make it out. be careful

a cute thought i've had lately is that since the Guard likes to spoil other battalions while they're on leave with higher quality replacements, new foods, and small gifts like nail polish, the other battalions like to bring back photos of really interesting animals or pretty scenery, and sometimes even rocks and small plants (though that's harder to sneak) that they've seen throughout their battles. a really specific idea in my head is that one time, Ponds brought them an actual fish and a tank, which is one of Fox's most prized possessions, and inspired many new names and interests in marine life. i also like to think that the Guard has a hidden trophy room, where the more rare / difficult to obtain items (like the tooth of a very dangerous animal) are kept.

Hello!!!!! If you’re seeing this post, that probably means that you’re in a fandom, possibly even multiple of them! I’m running a survey on some fandom related things and I would really appreciate it if you could help me out!
First of all, this survey is not being used for any real research or study. I’m just very autistic about fandom culture and history and I felt like this would be the best way for me to get responses to the questions I have in a well organized manner. I really hope to hear from a wide array of fans in a wide array of communities! It’s completely anonymous of course so please feel free to be honest! I do plan on sharing some of the open question responses at the end however so please be aware of that.
Second of all, my actual questions and what I’m looking for. I’m very interested in the culture and attitudes around shipping and fanfiction, and the terms pro/anti-ship. I want to know when other people recall seeing these terms first pop up, and I want to hear from people who may self identify as one or the other, or neither or something else entirely. There are several open ended questions and optional spaces to elaborate on your thoughts so please feel free to add on as much as you’d like!
Here is the link to the actual survey :) I’m posting this on July 21st, 2024, and I plan on leaving it open to responses until August 21st, 2024, to hopefully have time to get more feedback. I may repost this same post a couple of times between now and then in various fandom tags so please feel free to block the tag ‘Allen’s fandom survey’ to avoid seeing it again if you don’t want to (or feel free to block me akdhsjdhdk).
Anyways! I appreciate it if you read this far and if you decide to respond to the survey! It would also really help if you could share it so it reaches more people in even more fandoms and communities, but that’s not really necessary. You can message me for questions or let me know if you want to be tagged when I eventually start posting about the results and my findings! Thank you, here is a picture of my cat for your troubles :)

y’all i just got harassed by a 10 year old bkdk shipper on tiktok who kept hating on me for shipping krbk and i just… like… can we just ship what we like without people doxxing us
i’m being so fr right now, i LOVE krbk more than i love myself but every time a bkdk shipper gets on my page and goes like “akshully bkdk has more development in the newer seasons and they are the most romantically implied—🤓🤓🤓” LIKE I DONT CARE!! I LIKE KIRIBAKU!! and i will CONTINUE to like it because i want to and because i can. you don’t see me spending my time leaving hate comments on bkdk posts because it’s seriously not that deep, they are FICTIONAL CHARACTERS.
please all i’m begging is for some peace, if you’re a bkdk shipper that’s awesome but don’t come for me for not liking the ship, we all have our opinions😭

you'd pair marcille with laois? not falin? I'm curious about your reasoning for that (not jugementally!), because I've only ever seen people shipping falin and marcille, and it seems like those two's closeness is pretty central to dungeon meshi -- would you be willing to explain your perspective on that? no obligations to, of course, I'm simply curious because it's an opinion I've not seen before. hope you're doing well!
i get why people ship marcille with falin, especially since a lot of her motivation as the story progresses comes from falin. but at the same time, marcille and laios have more scenes that're definitely implied to be romantic, in my humble opinion — it's not shoved down our throats but it's a smooth thing that happens every now and then.
honestly, [SPOILER] ever since it was revealed that marcille was a researcher when falin was a student, and the canon ages presented in which falin was most likely a teen when they first met completely eradicated whatever ship was forming. [END]
plus, i think what bolstered the marcille x falin train was that one scene in the bathtub. but throughout the manga, we see more of marcille & laios more than anything else.
and i don't wanna compare manga readers vs anime readers but it seems like i have no choice but to do so: it's the dilemma i have with laios x kabru where, yes, people can ship whoever they want to ship but i feel very strongly about how laios and kabru's relationship is just kabru chasing laios in a way, and kabru having a more developed and AMAZING relationship with mithrun. but since kabru is a pretty boy twinky stereotype, and laios is a big guy, people naturally gravitate to it.
then there's falin and marcille, whose ship was even more popularized because of the bathtub scene at the beginning but as everything develops, it's marcille and laios who have more scenes that imply something romantic, especially at the end [SPOILER] where marcille stays with laios and their "monsters" eating each other [END]
i think more japanese fans are into marcille x laios, but western twitter is more into laios x kabru and marcille x falin. but again, this is just my opinion! PLEASE IT'S JUST MY OPINION RAHHHHHH

I’m gonna be honest with y’all. I try my best but I do not understand half of Star Wars. I’m Din Djarin in this fandom. I don’t understand the storyline, I have no idea what anyone is talking about, I don’t want to be in charge, I got a cool outfit and I have a car let’s ride.

Shunuki didn't go through all of that just so you, homophobic dudebros on other socmed platforms, could say they are just friends while saying other childhood friends duo is instantly a canon ship for your kind just because they are consisting of man and woman
