Reviving my animal ear reference I made last year.
Studying reference can really upgrade your artwork and character designs. Sketch over ref photos to break down those shapes and understand the differences between breeds and species. :)
This might just be a nitpicky thing but i see a lot of pigeons drawn with budgie noses. They dont have budgie noses! They look so weird to me drawn with their nostrils on top of the cere (white part of the nose)
Their nostrils are right above their mouths under the little fold. I always recommend looking at references for the species that youre drawing. Personally I doodle without a reference pretty often and i have a decent idea of what a pigeon looks like in my minds eye but ill always do better with references. I usually just look up pigeons on google and leave the image search results open while i draw.

Does anyone know where to find high quality references of animals? Close ups and all?
I'm sure there's some archive somewhere but I can't seem to find it, however I need to see what pigeon feet look like close up. For more context, I'm redesigning one of my OCs and I'm playing around with the idea of bird-like hands. That would mean they vary between species but since I can't get any good close ups of bird feet it's proving difficult.
Of course corvids are easy to find but things like pigeons? Not so much.
The greatest injustice ever faced is that I almost certainly started the still thriving "clown husbandry" tag on here, but any discussion about it (from a know your meme page to a youtube video with 500k views) says it's a joke of "unknown origin" or credited to this post, likely bouncing off of mine (which was actively circulating at the time with like 30k notes):
This is a tragedy for many reasons, most of all because it wasn't just an offhand joke but actually a direct response to some of the funniest online hate I ever got:
They're erasing the truest history of tumblr: its desperate need to seethe and argue over every obvious joke with more than 10 notes.
anyways here is the canonical pet clown. according to me
OK, I know I usually talk about fantasy archery in a positive sense, but I think there’s also a place for (hopefully constructive) criticism of tropes that could do with improving!
If you like this sort of thing, here’s the full video:
“People are inherently terrible” no!!! Have you ever seen a child wait for their friend while they tie their shoelaces? Have you ever known someone who would bring hurt squirrels and rabbits and mice to the nearest vet just so it doesn’t suffer? Have you seen someone grieve? Have you ever read something that hit your heart like a freight train? Have you looked at the stars and felt an unexplainable joy? Have you ever baked bread? Have you shared a meal with a friend? Have you not seen it? All the love? All the good? I know it’s hard to see sometimes, I know there’s pain everywhere. But look, there’s a child helping another up after a hard fall. Look, there’s someone giving their umbrella to a stranger. Look, there’s someone admiring the spring flowers. Look, there’s good, there’s good, there’s good. Look!!!!
Or alternatively titled: Snake Jamil, but even larger noodle
The species that Jamil is based on here is called the Blood Python (special thanks to @kirexa for the information!), which can reach an average of 4-6 ft in length and up to 30 lbs in weight.
