💙MEET MY FAMILY 💙 Last week we had some wonderful visitors over from Australia. It was was the first time that the boys had met my Godmother Jane, and one of her beautiful children Emily. I’ve never really posted a full family photo on here before, so I’ll introduce everyone. In the centre is my brother Jamie (unsurprisingly not looking at the camera). He has something called Angelman syndrome, along with epilepsy and dystonia. He’s 30 and sadly doesn’t walk, or talk. On the floor is my sister Hannah. She’s 18 and the is the best Auntie the boys could ask for. Even with a 10.5 year age gap, she is my best friend! And finally my mum and dad are either side of my brother. I probably don’t tell them enough, but I think they’re beyond amazing. Happy international angelman syndrome day! This photo is from when my brother graduated high school last year. I love him, but I can't say life with him is easy or as lovely and glamorous as some say it is. I'm gonna be real for a minute. Garrett is about to be 23 in 3 days and I will be 20 in 10 days. He is 3 years older than I am and he has always been a staple in my life. I am just now learning to love my brother as the beautiful angel that he is. It seems that so many siblings just unconditionally love their AS family member and that every moment is sunshine and rainbows and that they have always been close. I wonder if it is because they are older and got to have normalcy in their life for some time before hand. I didn't get that. I had friends who were younger than me, there for much younger and smaller than Garrett and they were afraid of him. He would destroy things that were mine and has kept me from having toys I wanted as a child due to choking hazards. I was always so frustrated that I just couldn't have a normal life or go on vacation like most did, or get the attention that the youngest child normally gets. So for a long time I tried to ignore everything and be normal. Don't get me wrong I have always loved my brother and stood up for him no matter what. I was just annoyed. Another thought I have in contrast to these other siblings is that while Garrett is healthier than most, he is way more handicapped than most. This caused more tension and makes it harder to be close to him Thankfully I am growing as a person and loving my brother more everyday. 1️⃣Angelman syndrome is a rare genetic and neurological disorder characterized by severe developmental delay and learning disabilities; absence or near absence of speech; inability to coordinate voluntary movements (ataxia); jerky movements of the arms and legs and a distinct behavioral pattern characterized by a happy disposition and unprovoked episodes of laughter and smiling

2️⃣Although those with the syndrome may be unable to speak, many gradually learn to communicate through other means such as gesturing

3️⃣children may have enough receptive language ability to understand simple forms of language communication

4️⃣Additional symptoms may occur including seizures, sleep disorders and feeding difficulties. Some children with Angelman syndrome may have distinctive facial features but most facial features reflect the normal parental traits.

5️⃣Angelman syndrome is caused by deletion or abnormal expression of the UBE3A gene
