Tosca at the Bavarian State Opera
Music Direction Andrea Battistoni Producer Kornél Mundruczó Mario Cavaradossi Jonas Kaufmann Floria Tosca Eleonora Buratto Baron Scarpia Ludovic Tézier | 27.07.2024
I attended this run with a renewed mindset, hoping that Kaufmann could rise above the distracting direction. Unfortunately, the issues were too irredeemable for even his star power to overcome. The production's best part was the Te Deum scene. Tézier was able to sing a menacing rendition of Scarpia's aria, "Tre Sbirri" free from the interference of background activities. Meanwhile, Kaufmann's Cavarodossi was preoccupied with taking photos during "Recondita armonia" or arranging film projectors while singing his lament, "E lucevan le stelle". The audience was distracted; Kaufmann appeared even more so.
The director's vision, while ambitious, was also uneven. Scarpia's den-torture room duplex was a smart design, adding more dimension to the second act. However, the production awkwardly repurposed the same torture room (minus Scarpia's den) for Tosca's leap to her death. The height could not be more a few meters tall, making what should have been a dramatic conclusion feel unconvincing and anticlimatic.
The audience's reaction that evening was more despondent compared to the first performance I attended in June. Kaufmann was in healthy vocal condition, and his acting was reliable. Tézier could play Scarpia in any circumstances; he completely owned the role. Buratto was consistent throughout the course of her performance.
#Now that the recording is available online I could talk more#Dare I say that Castronovo was slightly better than Kaufie as Pasolini/Cavarodossi. He's more convincing at least in the first act.#But both were even in the second and the final acts. This production hates the tenor.

Vincenzo Costanzo joined the children’s choir of the Teatro San Carlo in Naples at the age of six. He made his debut as a soloist at the age of 11 in a contemporary opera, again at the Teatro San Carlo. He studied piano and solfège in a private school, and then obtained his degree at the local conservatory. At the same time, he graduated in Computer Engineering, continuing his singing studies with Marcello Ferraresi, and then perfecting his skills with Piero Giuliacci. Despite his young age, Vincenzo Costanzo has already won an Oscar Della Lirica (New Generation Tenor award) in Doha (Qatar) in 2014, and has had the opportunity to work with internationally renowned directors and conductors such as Myung-whun Chung at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice and in Tokyo, James Conlon at the Teatro Real in Madrid, Emma Dante at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, Daniel Oren and Franco Zeffirelli at the Arena di Verona and Liliana Cavani at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. His most recent engagements include Un Ballo in Maschera, Simon Boccanegra (Gabriele Adorno), Tosca (Cavaradossi), Maurizio Di Sassonia in Adriana Lecouvreur and Madama Butterfly (Pinkerton). Dear Vincenzo, thank you for accepting our invitation! Now you are at Sabbioneta, at Teatro all’Antica, for a new project: Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata, alongside Elisa Balbo and Luca Micheletti. What can you tell us about this project? How did this idea come about? How is it going on so far? Hello, dear readers of OPERA Charm. A few days ago we finished the shooting of La Traviata in the suggestive theater of Sabbioneta. It has been a wonderful experience, but unfortunately I can’t release any information about it because the project has not been announced yet. I can only give you a little spoiler: the technology used for audio and video shooting is totally innovative and unprecedented. You’ll hear about it soon. To go a bit backwards: when did you feel for the first time that opera is your path and who are those who guided your first steps towards the stage? What’s the moment that you consider to be the actual beginning of your career? In my family I am the only musician and artist. I have felt a vocation within me since I was a child. I took my first steps on stage at the age of 9 at the San Carlo Theatre in Naples and I identify the beginning of my career with the victory of the Voci Verdiane award in Busseto at the age of 21. You had the chance to work with Daniel Oren, Franco Zeffirelli, Andrea Battistoni, Leo Nucci, Juraj Valcuha, Giampaolo Bisanti, Francesco Ivan Ciampa and many others. What each “gesture” has thought you and which of them had the most important impact on you as an artist until now? I have been lucky enough to be part of the opera world since I was very young and every single person I have met during my journey has enriched me as a man and an artist. I could name a thousand episodes that have made me understand the sacrifice and dedication necessary for this ancient art. reposted from https://opera-charm.com/

The Ancient Narrative - Adam and Eve - the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil - the Forbidden Fruit - that Tempting Icon. The promise of connection and transcendence. But it’s a mirage at best - corrupting and distorting - yet with unknowable power over us - in it’s attraction and it’s promise of how it might enrich our lives. It’s a bad replica - and today with everything that’s happening around us, we are extremely aware of its deficiencies - it’s inability to replace the REAL. What we crave - it can’t fully give us. Connection and transcendence has to be experienced in the seen, felt and heard of real human contact.

Tosca at the Bavarian State Opera
Music Direction Andrea Battistoni Producer Kornél Mundruczó Mario Cavaradossi Charles Castronovo Floria Tosca Eleonora Buratto Baron Scarpia Ludovic Tézier | 01.06.2024
The production provoked a strong reaction from the audience, as shown by the mix of applauses and unhesitating boos at the staging. The modern adaptation of Puccini's masterpiece derives its inspiration from the Italian filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini (the Cavaradossi character), focusing on his posthumous film and his close relationship with Maria Callas (his Tosca). Scarpia is depicted as the leader of The Red Brigades, a terrorist group in Italy in the 70s.
Some of the creative changes could be appreciated, although there were inevitable mismatches between the original libretto and the altered narrative. The biggest issue was the distracting directions. For instance, the first act aria, "Recondita Armonia," was sung as Cavaradossi took photos of bare female extras with his Polaroid camera. I found it hard to focus on the singing while the overwhelming act was happening simultaneously.
The commendable factor of this production was from the principal singers in the evening. Castronovo delivered a good job as Cavaradossi; Buratto sang Tosca beautifully with her round and supple voice; Tézier was a complete beast as Scarpia. He was the most consistent singer among the other two. Watching his singing the Te Deum was simply an out-of-body experience.
There will be a live stream of this production in July as part of the Munich Opera Festival. If you watch, I would love to hear your opinions!
