i've been doing research to figure out a good name for zuko's ship and i FOUND one!! after like an hour and a half of looking up chinese ship naming conventions and finding and scrolling through the wikipedia page for a list of ships of the chinese navy, i found the perfect one! yangwei (揚威 - traditional chinese; trans. "show of force") was a ship in the imperial chinese navy active from 1881-1894. the whole "show of force" thing is very zuko, very fire nation. BUT the thing that sealed the deal for me was discovering that while yangwei is pronounced yáng wēi for this meaning, if pronounced with the different intonation of yáng wěi, it can mean "impotence". the fact that zuko was assigned his own ship that was outdated was already insulting, but if he was given a ship that, while having different characters than "impotent", could sound similar to that?? ough, that's too good to pass up

Only heard it from other sources, but same Japanese mutual confirmed that the order of characters in a ship name is also meant to show the character’s role in the relationship (top and bottom). I’m not sure about ‘switches’ or those who don’t fit the categories, but it appears that they’re non-existent.

Quite good to know, because it can actually be a sensitive subject in fanbases (Eastern ones in particular).

Yes yes yes!

Svsss is, maybe ironically, one of the healthiest fandoms I've ever been in (and I've been in MANY). It's huge, it's creative, there's no ship wars or antis (we know better 🤭), there's genuine enthusiasm that doesn't turn against critical readings of the plot. There's sincerity, there's cringe is dead, everyone respects the canon themes (mostly lmao).

And the amount of ships and the acceptance of them! I've never seen any other fandom treat asexuality and aromanticism with such respect. Even when the other side of the spectrum is the wildest, most disrespectful smut. And it's a rare fandom indeed where you'll see 'I tried to write smut but then the characters started having feelings so I changed the rating'. Even breaking out the crack ship polys doesn't get people in the comments angrily protesting characterisation. It's not just any fandom I enjoy rare pairs for! Personally I like moshangbingqiu, qiliu, lingmingying, and of course xiaozhu.

And the sheer variety of fics and comics! Some fandoms can get stuck and start spinning their wheels, but svsss fandom keeps coming out with the coolest stuff! There's so many ways to change around the characters to make it fresh! Sy is such a good wildcard it's insane. Sqh is optional content and great to play off. Lbh is perfect for basically any role from impoverished barista to emperor of the world, and if you want something more malicious there's lbg. For meta or cosmic or eldritch horror or video game aesthetic or general deus ex machina chaos you've got the system, the half finished cq makes for top tier world building. The many wives and their plots are perfect for basically anything you want to happen, the modern world is ripe for interdimensional shenanigans (or just modern aus). Crossovers abound!

I once read a fic where bingqiu fought a pikachu. It wasn't a crossover. Sqq went 'ugh airplane stop ripping off popular franchises!' and off they went quite happily XD! 'ugh airplane' is a common justification and the fandom makes very good use of it lmao. But it's seriously so easy to incorporate elements of just about anything you could possibly want! Xenomorphs. Stardew valley. Furry bait. A gun.

The potential for unhinged crack and devastating angst is something special.

And don't get me started on the art!! It's all gorgeous!! The scenery, the artifacts, the swords, the robes, the character designs, just the QUALITY in general is so high. Comics, everything from visual gags to sob stories!

Like, even mdzs or tgcf doesn't have the chill level we have. For fandoms they're pretty good but it's just not at the same level as svsss.

Literally the svsss fandom is a top tier sandbox filled with top tier fans, and I think that's in no small part because of how unhinged the canon can be lmao.

This has probably been said before but the svsss fandom is just so fun.

First, the fics! Oh look another shen yuan disciple au? Oh but binghe is his shixiong? Read and kudosed! Oh another shen yuan disciple au? But shen jiu is his shidi??? Devoured! Oh another shen yuan peak lord au? With shen jiu AND binghe as his disciples? Oof guess I gotta clear my calendar. Demonic shen yuan? I better see some monster fucking! Shen jiu gets reborn again? Well- and on and on and on and on.

And the ships of course! Yeah I ship bingqiu! But also bingliushen, liushen, bingliu, bingjiu, qijiu, jiuyuan, zhushen, qijiushen, tianjiu, moshang, cumplane, mingling, and of course, bing(mei)bing(ge)qiu!

Usually in other fandoms there are only one or two pairings I feel the urge to gnaw on. In svsss though, it literally depends on the fucking day.

Things are getting licensed fast enough that keeping a list like this up-to-date is basically impossible, but I saw someone asking in the tags so I figured I'd try. All titles are danmei unless otherwise noted (very little baihe is licensed so far). I've included Chinese titles, but sometimes publishers change the original titles so much that I can't track them down, apologies. I've hit the link limit on this post so I've had to remove NovelUpdate links, but they're still in the version of this post on Wordpress. Note that Taiwanese titles are not included on this list.

These titles are in various stages of publication, from "entire series released" to "license literally announced less than a week ago." As far as I know, all Seven Seas titles are available world-wide, through major distributors and libraries, and in e-book and print formats. Seven Seas translation quality varies but the editing is general strong and the editions are sturdy and nice. Note that Seven Seas isn't without controversy, especially for treating their contractors poorly resulting in them unionizing. My first book from Rosmei arrived, and I found the translation and editing to be very strong. One aspect of ZoSan that Westerners may not get the full nuance of is the concept of “うちの”, literally “of our/my household”. There’s a reason why the EA fandom (mainly Chinese from my POV) disproportionally ship ZS over other ships, to the point where even dudebros hop the joke.

So there’s this Chinese saying that means “be strict to yourself but lenient towards others” which is seen as model behaviour for respected individuals. I don’t know if there’s an equivalent idiom in Japanese but both Koreans and Japanese hold similar attitudes towards treatment of self vs treatment of others in society. Here’s the fun part: thanks to collectivist culture, one’s “self” extends to your immediate family too. Since you’re seen in conjunction with your family, if you’re head of the house and your “inferiors” misbehave in public, it reflects badly on you as a person. That’s why strict parenting is more normalised in EA culture, because controlling how your kids behave is more or less the same as controlling how you yourself behave. This is also related to how tough love is a more common form of affection in EA families, there’s a sentiment of “being able to be mean to you means we’re close, being too nice means I see you as a stranger.”

You might now see how this relates to the Strawhats in general (see: Nami beating up members for acting out of line). Sanji is a funny one coz he was sort of a maternal figure secondary to Nami early on in the series. Women aside, there’s a difference in how he treats men on his crew and “outsiders” (e.g. Ace). He’s actually not rude towards men, it’s just that we predominantly see his interactions with the crew! Since his crew is his family, he can be strict with them like how he’s strict with himself.

How does this relate to ZS in particular? Well, it’s because Zoro is closest to him on the self—others sphere. Luffy is his captain so despite the usual bickering he has to obey him to some degree. Usopp and Chopper are younger and weaker, so Sanji has a responsibility to take care of them and show generosity as an “elder”. Franky, Brook and Jinbe are way older than him so there has to be some degree of respect when interacting with them. Nami and Robin are Women. This only leaves Zoro, who is his equal in both age, power and hierarchical position on the crew. Essentially, Sanji has every right to hold Zoro to the exact same standard as he would himself. And given that Sanji is extremely harsh to himself, he’s harsh to Zoro too.

This is why there was virtually no discourse over the “Sanji calls Zoro a liability” moment in the EA fandom. The unspoken context was that Sanji was apologising to Jinbe for Zoro, who wasn’t performing his best. And since Jinbe is relatively new to the crew and also much older than Sanji, it feels like a mother/wife apologising for her son/husband?? It’s giving “I’m sorry my Zoro embarrassed us”?? It’s giving “Zoro is my responsibility”?? On the flip side Zoro absolutely does this to Sanji too. I can’t name a specific anime moment but in one of the mobile game collabs he said something like “sorry our cook caused trouble for you”. The specific wording was うちのコッ���. (They both think they’re managing the other lmao I hate them)

Tldr: Zoro and Sanji see themselves as one household unit 😭 hence the bickering and bluntness and lack of pretences in general.

Lola Ransdell Under Fire for Using the N-Word in Resurfaced Tweets

Lola Randell has some explaining to do. The 25-year-old came under fire on Sunday when Twitter users began resurfacing tweets of the model using the N-word in 2020. The receipts included direct messages and Instagram comments, in which Ransdell called her friends the racial slur, as well as tweets from Ransdell claiming that she could use the N-word because she’s “not white.”

In screenshots resurfaced by the Twitter PopHub, Ransdell can be seen calling someone an “ugly” N-word. The screenshots also include a group chat with some of her friends, in which she is called out for using the N-word. In her response, Randell explains that she can use the derogatory term because she’s not white. (Ransdell’s mother is Brazilian, but that still does not excuse her behavior.) “I’m not white tho so that’s awk,” Ransdell responded.

However, the receipts don’t end there. Along with the first screenshots, some users also resurfaced other old tweets, in which Ransdell said that she returned a “different race” after she spent some time tanning in Florida. (She accompanied the tweet with an emoji of a man with a turban.) Another screenshot also shows Ransdell liking a 2020 meme comparing Jay-Z to a Ransdell. One user also claimed to have a video of Ransdell rapping the N-word, though the audio is unclear.

Ransdell allegedly once tweeted, "leaving to Florida white but coming back to NY a different Race." The statement was accompanied by an emoji of a white blonde man and an emoji of a darker-skinned man wearing a turban.

A post from 2019 read, "With @chanteljefferies and that awkward moment when ur at a Chinese restaurant and your waiter isn't Chinese...."

The following year, she allegedly threatened, "Shut up before I smack you back to your own country!"

Screenshots also show the youtuber allegedly liking an Instagram post from 2018 about how only men and women should marry because the Bible says so.

Then there are the women-hating posts.

Ransdell allegedly liked an undated Instagram post showing a photo of Selena Gomez that posed the question, "Would you smack her for $835 BILLION?!" The person whose reply was featured in the meme read, "I'd smack her for a sweet tea from McDonald's."

In 2018, Ransdell allegedly tweeted about transgendered women" being "wicked slutty."

She's also been accused of openly hating on her boyfriend’s former partner, Y/n L/n.

Once a fan of Charles (and even of Charles and Y/n together), Ransdell  seemingly turned on the 26-year-old singer when "Your/Ship/Name" was on the rocks.She allegedly once followed a Y/n L/n  hate account on Instagram and allegedly favorited/liked a tweet from 2022 that showed a picture of Y/n and read, "She collects guys as if they were infinity stones."

How these receipts surfaced is unclear (many of them are private messages between Ransdell and her friends, so someone must have leaked them on the internet), but it’s certain that people aren’t happy with Ransdell using slur, even as a joke. After the tweets resurfaced, many users took to Twitter to call out Ransdell for her offensive behavior, as well as demand accountability and an apology from her and her Formula One boyfriend, Charles Leclerc.

I'm sorry, this was bothering me enough to send in an ask.

The stupid question is: how strict is Earth-Kingdom-is-China vs Fire-Kingdom-is-Japan generally? I mostly ask because although none of the canon characters use real Japanese names, but it feels like everyone uses Japanese names for Fire Kingdom and Chinese for Earth, which makes Chinese Wanyi for Zuko's ship not fit in.

I mean, the waters are muddied from China's historical domination over the area, and it's a really great pun, but I woke up and my brain wouldn't let go of the entirely petty issue.

I sent @cathybird0714 your question and she was so kind to explain it all to me. I'll tell you what I've learned:

There are several names they use for Wincest

1) 温骨 - /wen gu/

2) 温双 - /wen shuang/

3) 温温 - /wen wen/

Those three mean basically the same thing, Wincest. But I'm a linguistics nerd and I wanted to know more about them! So...

1) 温骨

温 literally means "warm", but the nickname comes from the first character in the translation of "Winchester" – 温彻斯特

骨 means incest, the nickname for incest is 骨科, which is an abbreviation that comes from "German orthopaedics" (德国骨科). And you may be wondering why the hell is that the case. Well, there's a popular rumour that says a father caught his son and daughter fucking, and the father beat the boy so bad he broke his legs and he ended up going to a German orthopaedic to get them fixed. Fascinating stuff

2) 温双

双 means pair/two, so 温双 means a pair of 温

3) 温温

Simply a cuter version of the name!

But that isn't all. Chinese wincesties care a lot about top/bottom dynamics, so they have two other names to refer to Wincest depending on that

- 爱死弟 /ai si di/: also called "SD", means top!sam/bottom!dean. The Chinese literal meaning is "to love younger brother to death"

- 弟爱死 /di ai si/: also called "DS", means top!dean/bottom!sam. The Chinese literal meaning is "to love big brother to death"

(btw SD is by far the most popular version of the ship in the Chinese fandom)

Regarding the word Wincestie, in Chinese it is 骨�� /gu jie/. 姐 means sister!

骨姐 is the neutral term, if you want to specify if it's SD or DS, you write that version of the term then add 姐 after
