Vrelnir's QA about Bailey & Eden
2024.6.30
We loved the recent Great Hawk pregnancy update! Might Eden's pregnancy storyline involve taking their child from the orphanage?
I'm glad you loved it! Eden would indeed prefer for their child to remain in the cabin.
Since the PC was sold to Eden and Bailey doesn't come to collect debts, this might hint at a unique relationship between Eden and Bailey. Might Eden's pregnancy storyline involve Bailey, possibly with Eden taking their child from the orphanage?
Aye.
If the PC and Eden's child is placed in the orphanage, would Bailey give special attention to Eden's child or prefer not to be noticed?
Bailey would give special attention, though they wouldn't plan to.
Might PC discover the special connection between Bailey and Eden in future updates, uncovering Bailey's hidden past?
Aye.
You mentioned Bailey and Eden once went fishing together, and Bailey is better at it. If Bailey caught several big fish that day while Eden caught none, how would they react?
Eden would be envious.
Bailey's Christmas gift is so mysterious! They're almost not close to anyone. Who sent it? I've been wondering for so long! Bailey examined it like they were trying to recognize the handwriting. Is it from someone they know, or can we learn more about it?
I shan't say!
In Eden and PC's Christmas event, Eden brought out a bottle of whiskey. If they truly didn't know it was Christmas (which I doubt), how did they have whiskey ready? Did Eden buy it in town, or did someone else give it to them?
Eden bought it in town to save for a special occasion.
Would female Bailey breastfeed her child (assuming she accidentally has one), or ask someone else to help?
Female Bailey would prefer someone else to help.
You once said female Bailey wears perfume. What scent does she like?
I fear I don't know enough about perfume to have a good answer!
What animals does Bailey's crush think Bailey and Eden resemble?
Wolves.
狼。
What animal does Eden think Bailey's crush resembles? What animal does Bailey think Bailey's crush resembles?
Eden thinks Bailey's crush resembles a mouse. Bailey thinks they resemble a robin.
What animals do Bailey and Eden think each other resemble?
Wolves.
狼。
What animal does Bailey think they resemble? What animal does Eden think they resemble?
Bailey thinks they resemble a snake. Eden thinks they resemble a bear.
How would Eden judge Bailey's morality?
They'd judge it as flawed.
In a parallel universe—just fantasy, not in the canon—if Bailey and Eden had sex, would Bailey prefer topping Eden or letting Eden top them?
Bailey would prefer topping.

💗 最是難忘~烏鎮 Wuzhen (之二) It's a historic scenic town, part of Tongxiang, located in the north of Zhejiang Province, China.
Wuzhen has been the permanent host place of the annual World Internet Conference, an international Internet conference held in China, since 2014.
Really can't help fall in love with its wood color while green and gray quartet the old tune to.
In addition, I have a deep impression. . . Every second counts when you're taking photos. The crowd of tourists always moves faster than the shutter of the camera. I was very mad at first, but no one dared to say shit, because I couldn’t even fight and argue, or even squeeze out the gap where you want to argue; people pused you go go go, Jesus! LOL Unless You are willing to take the water route, the point is: boats are also busy, not just "cowboys are busy". (It's a famous's song named by Taiwan singer - Jay Chou) Hahaha!!!
Looking back on every trips, no matter how long or short, good or bad, is full of gratitude. It is a new enlightenment and understanding of my own vision. and A pretty nice & rich memory for me, Especially I learned things and humanity from so close people that traveled. 🙏 Lan~* xoxo

KK- diary English Lyrics
Forgetting the painful things, I let those premature words spill out. It was the end of the distant spring.
Like the twilight town didn’t know of today’s sins, the ending bell tolled.
A back alley. Laughter. On the other side of the window, a picturesque, happy family.
My chest hurt, and when I looked up, the first star was twinkling.
Alone, I’m lit by my nightlight, waiting for tomorrow, rushed by the second hand,
I lament as I realize the day left nothing for me, and I threw it away,
The only thing that’s ever left is me, and I never change.
Scared of love, I distanced myself from town. The wind is still hot. It’s the end of summer.
The stacked luggage, memories of the day we could meet and laugh, I left them behind, and walked away.
I can’t see what lies ahead though. You’re not here though.
A detour,
A park with swings,
A drinking fountain,
Fading life,
The civic center,
The sound of a piano,
You faintly laugh.
The overlapping scenes peck away at my visage.
Ordinary voices are useless. I’m useless.
Rubbing our puffy eyes, we promised. We would meet again. It’s the end of a painful autumn.
If you’re ok. Keep laughing. Always resounding in your chest. Even now.
If you fall, don’t look back; even if you feel ashamed, don’t worry about it
I wish I could say, “Let’s always be together.”
Because if even someone like me has a purpose, then everyone else has a purpose too.
I wish I could hear them, the voices connecting us to tomorrow.
When I remember today, it’ll be so your smile doesn’t disappear.
Before I go away, so my days with you don’t disappear,
I’ll leave this.
As usual, there’s a single footprint. In the middle of the path, it’s the end of a cold winter.
The twilight town seemed just a bit nicer. That’s the story of that day.

Sharing some of my fave League of Nobleman bilibili YanLan fan edits!
(You don't need the app to watch these, just turn on Google translate and follow the instructions to play on browser)
.
"DaYong Tea Art Spokesman"
It is what it says on the lid🤣
.
Really creative hilarious voice-over.
Even if you aren't good at Mandarin, taking screenshots and getting a basic image translation is worth it for this one, trust me lol.
.
Funny on point classical music bgm.
.
This one is funny in the sense the edit is cleverly done in a way it unfolds like a period tragic romance melodrama now. "I broke up with my childhood sweetheart for revenge and became a concubine" LMFAOO
.
Another cute edit of them calling each other.
.
My absolute favourite edit, I've lost count of how many times I rewatched this to feel my heart being trampled over and over again.
.
+1
Very sad (like wow editor, who hurt you) but very creative edit.

Scaramouche's redemption story is so much better than Tartaglia's story. Tartaglia's story was literally just "hey he wanted to kill everyone in this city but did you know he loved his family?" There are famous serial killers who were also really nice on the surface, and there are war criminals also had family, so that "redemption story" with his brother was pretty unconvincing. Scaramouche's story, however, is much better in that it isn't really asking the audience to simply forgive him, but asking the audience to understand him. Understanding is not the same as forgiving, but it can be the precursor to forgiving. As Nahida has said, knowing the truth allows one to make real choices, so after understanding Scaramouche, the audience can make the choice to forgive him or not. That's good. As for Wanderer, it's hard to say whether or not he forgave himself, but at least he has accepted himself. That's also good.
Anyway this reminds me of the ode by the character Lu Zhishen from Water Margins/
In my life I never cultivated goodness, relishing only murder and arson.
Suddenly my golden shackles have been opened; here my jade locks have been pulled asunder.
Alas! Hereby the river tide cometh, now I finally realise that I am what I am!

So saying, Kasumi knelt in front of him.
Tir was unable to speak.
I know we’re fighting against the Empire’s injustices for the sake of everyone who has suffered at their hands. I know that, but…
“Lord Tir, Lord Mathiu!”
The second scout Mathiu had sent out came running into the room.
“What is it?” Mathiu responded immediately. “Has something happened?”
“The Imperial Army has already gained total control of Kouan and is headed this way now. It’s only a matter of time before they arrive…”
“What?!”
Mathiu, Tir, and everyone else was momentarily struck speechless.
Even Viktor lowered his voice. “What are we gonna do, eh, Tactician?”
Mathiu thought for a moment and then answered.
“They boast that General Teo’s cavalry units are invincible.
There is no way our forces can hope to match them, no matter what strategy we employ.”
“So then where does that leave us?” Flik asked.
“We must retreat to our castle headquarters at once.
The armored cavalry are at their best when they can run freely—namely, on the open fields.
Luckily, our base happens to be in the middle of a lake.
Let’s hole up in our castle and buy more time to come up with a better plan.”
“But the Empire has Sonya Shulen and her navy,” noted Lepant.
“Even if the armored cavalry is taken out of the picture, we can’t rest easy.”
“That has not escaped me. However, General Sonya’s Imperial Navy and the lake pirates who run rampant on Lake Toran have been at each other’s throats for years.
If someone were to send notice to the pirates that the General is on her way, their interference would likely provide her with some distraction.”
Mathiu quickly gave the order to retreat.
Tir and the others hastily made their preparations as well and soon the entire army had evacuated Garan Checkpoint.
Unfortunately, no matter how they hurried, it would take at least half a day to reach the shore where their boats were anchored.
The general sense of anxiety and unease mounted as the Liberation Army marched forward.
Then, just as they were about to arrive at the shore…
several men on horseback came galloping over the fields at a breakneck speed. It was the third group of scouts Mathiu had dispatched.
“Lord Tir, Lord Mathiu! Bad news!
Teo’s army is right on our heels!”
“What?!”
A large cloud of dust could be seen rising into the air over the fields stretching out behind the scouts.
Adrenaline coursing through his veins, Tir stared hard at the dust cloud until at last he could make out flashes and sparkles of light here and there among the dust cloud.
The armor of the Gulhorses and their riders reflecting the sunlight.
“How the devil were they able to arrive that quickly?!”

The difference between the rich and the poor is often just a matter of "concept", and value always takes precedence over numbers, and people who knows it enjoy its expensiveness, while people who don't know how to appreciate it overestimate their own frugality; for a long time, I have been living with a group of people like this all my life. I know it but I can't say it openly because it will spark arguments and I don't like it. That's why I love traveling (living in different cities, towns, and villages). You will get to know the lives of the so-called real poor and rich people. To be honest, they have nothing to do with money and wealth, but they are just the accumulation of ideas and experiences. In fact, things the more people knew, the more humble they are. Some people are illiterate at all, but their lives and hearts are sparkling; some people are dressed in dazzling clothes, and their words and deeds make people discard them like dirt; some people are like an old tree, full of the essence of the sun and the moon. When you meet someone like A person like a tree, he will make you want to sit down and enjoy the cool air or even take a nap. He has no desire, no need, no self, everything seems to have stopped and the sun is shining!
- Lan~*
─ Sir Terry Pratchett, Men at Arms (ebook
此書排在他於1976年出版的科幻小說《The Dark Side of the Sun》以及於1981年出版的科幻小說《Strata》之前。

rough reading notes: an irresponsible list of danmei recommendations
When I get frustrated about not finishing novels, I, very counterintuitively, look up more novels to read.
Recently I looked up so many "promising" novels I'm getting confused myself, so I decided to just write them out for my own reference -- so I can sort of distinguish between the twelve historical political novels that feature political enemies who are secretly in love with each other.
I think it may be fun to come back to this post later to see how many of these I actually read.
I say this (untranslated) list is irresponsible because I haven't read any of these novels -- the descriptions could be inaccurate or misleading. I don't actually know.
Historical/Political Novels (rebirth/transmigration)
桓容 by 来自远方 -- [transmigration, political] -- The good news is the main character has transmigrated as a rich young lord, but the bad news is his father wants to launch an insurrection while the rest of his family are full of drama. So he can't just sit back and be a rich playboy and needs to figure out a strategy for survival
流放三千里 by 慕君年 -- [transmigration, political, "farming"] -- a transmigrator and a young lord both end up as exiled convicts due to political upheaval. They rebuild their lives and eventually take the throne.
穿成帝王的心腹大患 by 弃脂焚椒 -- [transmigration, political] -- While mocking an Emperor's legacy/reputation at his exhibit in a museum, the shou transmigrates and his comments are heard by the entire court. He is forced to being "brutally honest" in front of the "tyrant", who is frustratingly amused and gradually impressed
宫廷生存纪事 by 妾在山阳 -- [transmigration, reincarnation] -- shou transmigrates and needs to create good karma as the tyrant gong in a dogblood scum gong novel -- while sharing a body with the tyrant … it got on my radar because of the AD drama that has since been delayed due to production drama …
我以为我拿的渣攻剧本 by 七果茶 -- [rebirth, political] -- Emperor thinks his guard/general wants to overthrow him when the guard is actually secretly and desperately in love. Two people who living in different genres. Intersex shou + mpreg.
Historical/Political Novels (straight timeline)
瑞鹤归 by 崎怪 -- [revenge, political] -- Emperor murdered family of loyal general and is overthrown by the real traitors. Thirteen years later, a poor student and a rich young lord meet in the capital. They banter and fight but there is a secret legacy of blood trailing behind them both
逆君侯 by 仙气十足 -- [political, secret pining] -- Emperor is secretly in love with a young lord, but they are politically opposed (?)
以权谋君 by 有绥 -- [political, secret pining] -- two power players in the political game are actually pining hard for each other, but can't admit it or be together because of their circumstances
将卿 by 临安教司 -- [revenge, old rivalries] -- a young master's family is destroyed in a political plot, and he himself endures torture and humiliation, made into a plaything, until a new emperor takes the throne. He returns to the capital, determined to destroy his old classmate and crush, whom he believes was responsible for the fall of his family
思君终有迹 by 赤水小树 -- [political, romance] -- a powerless prince is made into a puppet emperor, but his throne and empire is saved by the intervention of a feudal lord (warlord). The prince falls in love with the lord, who starts to love him back, but the throne and the feudal powers remain fundamentally opposed in the political theater, which does not bode will for their romance
帝策臣轨 by 竹下寺中一老翁 -- [political, angst] -- a poor scholar and trapped prince eventually become subject and emperor. First installment in a shared universe by the author. the Free on JJ.
愿以山河聘 by 浮白曲 -- [political] -- "An Empire as a Betrothal Gift". very popular on JJ and recommended a lot, but once again I have no idea what the plot is actually about except it's "political"
望尽山河 by 蒟蒻蒟蒻 --[political, childhood friend] -- a guard hides in a prince's estate to avoid unwanted attention from the Emperor, and meets the blind shuo. They become very important to each other, and eventually the gong becomes a general and the shou receives the title of Prince, but the shuo's political ambitions clash with the gong's idealism …
本王和政敌清清白白 by 梦里长安躲雨人 -- [political, misunderstanding] -- the prince is rumoured to be a lecher and have kept a now-powerful noble as a male favorite. He returns to the capital, to a different political order and the same ridiculous rumours …
Historical Novels (dog blood/old school vibes?)
慕容猊 by 玄朱 -- [old school, lorc x guard] -- a guard becomes "something more" with his lord after an accident. He wants to die as a loyal guard but circumstances change. transmigrated gong, supposedly, and there are two shous with a 1vs1 endgame.
爱有多重 by 三更雨 -- [scum gong, "substitute", prince x guard] -- prince gong requests the shou to become a guard in his estate, and treats him like a toy while pining after a different young man
-- "ten years ago, he let the person he loves the most go. Now, on the verge of death, the man comes back to make a final apology …"
长风万里 by 水天 -- [old school, political] -- idealistic young scholar enters court in a troubled nation, and works on his political vision, while there the other power players who wants to intimidate or trick him. Has several gong "candidates", not sure if there is a "change the gong"
调教系列之-陪嫁 by 蓝刹 -- [harem, prince x guard] -- he follows a princess to her new kingdom as a part of her marriage entourage, expecting to a be guard in the palace. Until he gets entangled with her prince husband …
碧血噬情 by 魔烟 -- [old school, lord x guard, angst] -- betrayal and reconciliation. very old story and sounds kind of dogblood? Less well-known sister piece to:
绝剑弄风 by 魔烟 -- [old school, master x servant] -- loyal and pining servant eventually winning over his master with sincere feeling and loyalty
一世倾情 by 烟是 -- [old school, forced relationship] -- an emperor forces the political hostage into a relationship with him
灼卓其华 by neleta -- [palace intrigue] -- shou enters the imperial harem as a "concubine". He was planning to fade into obscurity, but unexpectedly the emperor notices him
Jianghu/Wuxia Novels
捕快春秋 by 绾刀 -- [mystery, historical] -- a local constable and disgraced student are both misunderstood outcasts. They end up working together to solve cases (?) Super long 1.8 million words. free on JJ.
朽木充栋梁 by 酥油饼 -- [jianghu/wuxia] -- the only son of a jianghu legend is only pretending to live up to the legendary reputation he has inherited. It sounds like it's supposed to be a comedy.
江湖绝杀令 by 即若离 -- [jianghu, fanfic] -- fanfic of Gu Long's The Legend of Lu Xiaofeng, shipping the popular Hua Manluo x Lu Xiaofeng
Not sure what it's about but it's recommended a lot as a wuxia story.
假凤虚凰 by 荷风吹 -- [wuxia, long] -- childhood "enemies" --> forced marriage --> martial brothers --> jianghu legacies. 1.5 million words. Has an AD adaptation that never finished.
Non-historical Novels
宋玉章 by 冻感超人 -- [republican era, mistaken identity, mulitple love interets] -- a man takes up the identity of a rich young master after a storm at sea, and starts a new rich and frivolous lifestyle. Multiple love interests but 1v1 endgame. Very popular recent story on JJ.
第三者 by 二冬 -- [modern, relationship in crisis] -- Scum gong cheats, but turns out he is cheating with an alternate personality of the same shou. What do you do about a relationship at this point?
天堑 by 舒仔仔 -- [fantasy/xuanhuan] -- main character kills his romantic rival and forces the heavenly prince to marry him, and is kind of insane and "happy" about this forced relationship. Gods vs demons.
剑出寒山 by 好大一卷卫生纸 -- [xianxia, faked death] -- a cultivator has impeccable reputation except a supposedly ordinary cultivation partner who is unworthy of him. Then the cultivator dies and everyone realizes that cultivation partner is not so ordinary. Fairly popular on JJ but has a large number of 1 star ratings -- not sure what's the drama there.

I ran out of room in the original post, so here is the complete discussion and side-by-side comparison with photos for chapter 10! There's a lot going on in this one, get ready.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
CHAPTER 10: pg 144
Japanese:
Fan translated: You gotta pair it with willow wine!
English version: I wanna slice 'em up and add 'em to some willowgrape!
There's a lot going on with this page, and chapter in general. Olruggio is clearly holding a large bottle of wine with the 'willowgrape' tree illustration in the background in that top panel, but the word "wine" never appears in the English version. This is especially noticeable because the very next panel has Olruggio clearly saying that this drink isn't for kids, and Qifrey laughing about 'ah, so that's why he sat patiently through the lesson.' The word cocktail is used occasionally instead, but since they can be non-alcoholic, it still makes the wording vague.
This page also features yet another name omission, this time Olruggio saying Qifrey's name as he mimics Qifrey's pose and phrase from chapter one: "大人の愉しみはこれからだぜキーフリー!" / "The adults' fun starts now, Qifrey!" / "But now they're asleep, you and I can have some fun of our own!"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
CHAPTER 10: pg 145
Fan translated: I call it the Liquordrop Buoy! // It protects the alcohol from oxidation, and it's preserved for when you want to drink it.
English version: I call it the Spirits Bubble. // …It'll keep whatever's inside at peak flavor. No more worryin' about a good drink goin' off.
This contraption Olruggio modified is specifically for alcohol and to keep it from oxidizing, and yet the English version has the wording vague enough that it just as equally could be used for any kind of drink. Stop your carbonated soda from going flat, maybe? The contraption's name does invoke the alcoholic intention but uses the far more obscure "spirits" label.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
CHAPTER 10: pg 147
Japanese:
Fan translated: Seven-Colored Lemon and Mountain Apple Willow Wine Sangria
English version: Willowgrape Cocktail with Prism Lemon and Mountain Apple
Here we see Olruggio's completed drink, with it's name on the banner and around the fancy bottle. Again, the word "wine" is missing from the English version and for those playing at home, the kanji to keep an eye on is this one: 酒 (it'll be important for the next page!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
CHAPTER 10: pg 148
Fan translated: Wine Glass Ring. Alcohol poured into this magic vessel will accumulate in mid-air. It grows longer when you pour into it, and you can't let it go until you've finished the drink. It's also called the Drunkard's Icicle.
English version: Loop Chalice. A drinking vessel contraption. Beverages poured through one side of the loop hang suspended in air on the other. The suspension grows longer as more liquid is poured in, giving rise to its nickname, "the drinkcicle." Though delightful, the chalice has one glaring drawback: it cannot be set back down until emptied.
Important things to note here: 1) the contraption literally has a carving of willowgrapes on it. (because it's for wine!) 2) Did you spy 酒 in the Japanese text version? Good job! Because this contraption is literally for alcohol. 3) The nickname for this contraption is the Drunkard's Icicle because you have to finish the drink before you can set it down, but the English version gave it the more generic nickname of "The Drinkcicle" along with the nondescript "Loop Chalice" name. (which isn't that far from the direct translation of goblet ring, but 'chalice' has ritualistic/symbolic vibes where again, this is just a cool cup for drunks.)
But this matters because in a later volume's chapter involving making parfaits with the girls, Olruggio uses these goblet circlets to show off the layered ingredients and the girls are surprised because they've never seen this contraption before. (and why would they? It's for alcohol!) But these sort of little changes affect the logistics of the story and make it less cohesive. It is also just bizarre for the English translation to go this far in minimizing the alcoholic nature of these devices and this chapter, for a manga that is about adults cooking at midnight. Especially when they keep the panel early in the chapter specifically saying that this recipe is not for kids. Again: Why the mixed messaging?
Anyway, I'm skipping the pages with Qifrey's mountain apple poached in willowgrape wine recipe, because it's all more of the same, but rest assured that just like the others, those pages also omit any mention of wine.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
CHAPTER 10: pg 152
Japanese:
Fan translation: If you're the one saying so, then it must be true.
English version: All right. I'll take your word for it.
The context for this panel is that Qifrey's meal—because it was simmered in willowgrape wine, made the apples look red, which is poisonous. When Olruggio questions this, Qifrey quickly reassures him that it's fine and it's just the coloring from the wine. Which leads to Olruggio thinking about it and then saying… this.
This panel scrambles my insides. The fact that this chapter originally released the same month as the main series' infamous Chapter 40, makes me scream. Look at Olruggio's absolute trust in Qifrey! I'm dying. I am slamming my hands on the table, this is the epitome of Orufrey and their heartbreaking dynamic (what does Qifrey's reaction on the next page even mean to people who don't have the context?? It's not like Qifrey looks happy, his expression is like a blue screen of death), and the English version translates it as "All right. I'll take your word for it."
"I'll take your word for it."
As a translation of something meaningful and kinda poetic, it sucks. As a sentence trying to fit the mood of the illustration, it sucks. In terms of accuracy and artistry and being faithful to the original version, it sucks. (As an Orufrey fan, it really sucks.)
I don't even know what else to say. What a way to end this volume.
But wait! There's more!
Tumblr media
As a final gift, the end of the book includes ingredient substitutions for the fantastical recipes. Which means that for Chapter 10's Bottled Willowgrape (wine), the real-world replacement is listed as… "red grape juice, for an all-ages, morning-friendly drink."
…..
💀🔪
Anyway, thanks for reading! Now that this is done, I can properly modify my book and cover these terrible lines with something better.
Image credits: Japanese scans are from Comic-Days.com, the fan scanlations are thanks to BrimHats/Nyaruhodou, and the English version photos are from my personal copy.
(Also because apparently the og post won't reflect edits because I reblogged this prior version (??), the missing kanji from Chapter 2 is "魔法器", thank you AskeFinns for being able to read what my eyes couldn't. 💝)
(Update #2: Some additional insight into the Japanese phrase in Chapter 1: pg 14, thanks to Farlynthordens! which is now in the og post but since it's not visible in THIS reblog, will be added here:
二人共: (the) two of you [the "tomo" implies the narrator is talking "to" them rather than "about" them] futari-tomo means in a literal sense "(you) two people who are together", but in terms of actual usage/definition it's just identifying a specific pair of people who the speaker is talking to. 今日も一日お疲れ様でした: the rest of this can't really be separated. this whole phrase is meant to be like "good work for all the things you did over the course of this whole day". the fan translation seems to have not understood that the two text blocks were meant to be all one sentence. so if you put this all together, it's like "Good work for everything today, guys!"
Thank you for the clarity! Knowing this I'll still keep it as part of the list, because it does omit addressing the two of them in the English version which follows that trend of minimizing these moments between them. But it's great to understand it better, thank you! 💝)
Because I'm autistic and because I love Witch Hat Atelier Kitchen, I page-by-page compared the recent Kodansha USA English release of volume 1 to its Japanese and fan-translated counterparts.
If you've read the official English translation, you may have noticed that some of the big Orufrey moments are.... a bit underwhelming, word-wise. You may have even noticed that the word "wine" is suspiciously missing from the final chapter's WillowGrape Wine recipe, in which wine is kind of an important and obvious factor in it! And you would be correct!
While most of this manga volume is pretty accurate to the original text, there is absolutely a concentrated effort to tone down the more tender Orufrey moments, as well as minimize the alcoholic nature of the final chapter's recipe and related contraptions.
And that's frustrating!
The entire draw of this manga spin-off is seeing these gay witch dads take care of each other and their four daughters in an idyllic countryside setting while also making yummy food that you the reader can try make too. Why is Kodansha USA trying to no-homo these gays?? (Is this a reflection of how bad things are in the USA now?) And while you might say, "But Jade! Qifrey and Olruggio are not actually dating in canon!" — and I would agree with you! But there is nothing straight about these mens' behavior in this comic, and if Qifrey is going to look in Olruggio's direction while tenderly saying his name in Nearly Every Chapter, I expect to read that in English, dammit!
So I'm activating my autism trap card and presenting ya'll with a thorough comparison of every mistranslated and omitted Orufrey or wine moment, complete with discussion and screenshots from the Japanese, fan-translated, and USA English versions. This post is ridiculously long and maxed Tumblr's 30-image limit so chapter 10's discussion is actually in a reblog (sob sob), so I'm putting it all under a cut (you're welcome), and you can be sure that I'll be doing this again if need be for the translated volumes releasing next year.
For now? Let's go.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
CHAPTER 1: pg 10
Japanese: フフ... Fan translated: Heh heh English version: Ahh...
This is a small moment, but it's important because it's foreshadowing. Qifrey is "airing out" the kitchen, but what he's really doing is sending those delicious smells into Olruggio's room. He's trying to lure him into the kitchen! And that little フフ/heh heh panel is evidence that he's up to something. If you've noticed in the main series, whenever Qifrey is doing something shady or it has a double-meaning, the 'camera angle' focuses on this side of his face with the dark lens.
But the English version obfuscates this by changing フフ to "Ahh..." like, 'isn't that better,' even though it keeps the ellipsis thought bubble indicating that something is up. Why the mixed messaging?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
CHAPTER 1: pg 13
Fan translated: Orugio! English version: Excellent!
This is the first of many moments where Qifrey will directly say Olruggio's name, and yet the English version will translate it to something else, or drop it entirely. And no, "there wasn't enough room" is not a valid excuse for most of these. Especially when Olruggio's name can (and often is) shortened to Olly.
Look at Olruggio's little smirk at making Qifrey beam happily like that. My God. Kodansha USA/translator Stephen Kohler, why would you take this from us.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
CHAPTER 1: pg 14
Fan translated: These two people are together tonight. Another day's work well done, you two! English version: Here's to another long day... ...and a well-earned break!
The omnipresent narrator from the beginning of the chapter is back, and clearly highlighting that 'these two people' are together tonight. And yet the English version removes all that. It may be redundant since we can see they're together in the illustration, but the whole page has that type of text redundancy, like focusing on 'eating that first bite,' or how 'a laugh bubbles up' with Qifrey. And combined with all of the other later omissions, this becomes an obvious trend of targeting these specific types of moments.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
CHAPTER 2: pg 28
Japanese: 料理も❓抾❓も相手のことを一番に考えるのは 君の美德だね 半分ずつだ オルーギオ (sorry, I couldn't read those kanji) Fan translated: Whether you're cooking or performing magic, you always think of others before yourself. It just goes to show your good character. We'll share it, Olruggio. English version: I've always admired that about you. Whether in your work of in the kitchen... ...You always think of others' needs before your own. All right. Let's split it, then.
The English version has two mistranslations here. I'll start at the top. In it, Qifrey is observing how Olruggio puts others first, and then compliments how it shows his good character. The 'good character' bit is changed to "I've always admired that about you," which at first I thought was sweet! Points for Kohler. But now that I really look at it, there is still some shady translating happening here.
In writing and communicating, what is said last has the most importance. This is how people "bury the lede," by hiding important information in the early part of a speech or amid other sentences, and then distracting them with other stuff.
In that English version top panel, even though Qifrey is complimenting Olruggio, by having it be said first it makes the second speech bubble (and therefore Olruggio's flustered response) be about Qifrey remarking on Olruggio's own behavior, rather than Qifrey's nice compliment about his character. Which changes the meaning of what's going on here. Olly is not flustering because he puts others first, he's flustering because Qifrey is saying something really nice about him, right to his face!
And then of course, in the bottom panel, Qifrey saying Olruggio's name is once again removed.
And I have to say, this bothers me not just because of autistic AcCUraCY! needs, but because he is very specifically saying his name. They are the only people in the room, it's very clear who Qifrey is addressing, and yet here he is once again, putting that man's name in his mouth. It is intentional. It is heartfelt. STOP REMOVING IT!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
CHAPTER 3: pg 36 and 37
Fan translated: (Olruggio): Qifrey, if you won't be needing those, send them my way. (Qifrey): One pot please, Olruggio! English version: (Olruggio): Mind if I grab those breadcrumbs from ya? I'm gonna use 'em as a binder for the patties. (Qifrey): Could you bring that pot over here for me?
This is a sweet segment because it shows how well Qifrey and Olruggio work in tandem in the kitchen. As someone who has repeatedly failed at working harmonically with others while making food, them being in sync in the kitchen is more fantastical than the actual magic.
And once again, Olruggio and Qifrey saying each other's names are removed. The Olruggio panel translation is also a bit misleading because (as you can see in the larger fan-translated photo), it's Qifrey who is controlling that wind spell! Olruggio is not "grabbing" the breadcrumbs from him, it's Qifrey who is sending them to him. It also lends to the back-and-forth of these moments because as soon as Olly's done with that pot, he gives it to Qifrey to use.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
CHAPTER 3: pg 41
Fan translated: Thank you, Olruggio. We'll see you later. English version: Thank you, my friend. We'll be on our way now.
We're now at the part of the manga where Qifrey saying Olruggio's name is changed to "my friend" in the English version. Which is a phrase I'll admit I have some Daevabad baggage with, so idk, is this some platonic ray-beaming or is it code for tender feelings for that person you like but aren't ready to date yet because of trauma and societal complications? Is Stephen Kohler a Daevabad fan? So many unknowns. Still counting it as a wrong though.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
CHAPTER 4: pg 56
Fan translated: (Olruggio): Really... I can't sleep with all this shimmering... (Qifrey): Do your best! Olruggio. English version: (Olruggio): Hmph. How's a man supposed to get some sleep with this thing sparklin' away over here? (Qifrey): Keep at it... ...my friend.
Qifrey literally made a bouquet of rose-shaped tarts for Olruggio to cheer up his room, so of course the English translation needs to tamp down that gayness by unnecessarily bringing up Olruggio's manhood when he complains about not being able to sleep from the tarts' sparkling. Even though this chapter's cover image is of Olruggio sitting in a field of flowers, pondering quietly as he holds one in his hand. Maybe later chapters will have Olruggio edited so he's sitting 5 feet away from Qifrey.
And again, Qifrey saying Olruggio's name in the bottom panel is changed to "my friend" in the English version.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
CHAPTER 6: pg 95
Fan translated: Turned out pretty good, right? If I really thought sharing the housework was a pain, then I couldn't make something like this. English version: Whaddya think? Not bad, huh? Sorry for leavin' you stuck with all the chores these last few days. I figure this is the least I can do.
Of all the mistranslations, this one bothers me the most. Olruggio is a wonderful malewife! He is constantly trying to help Qifrey out with the Atelier chores, in Kitchen and the main series. And yet the English translation changes the entire context of what these panels are saying.
The right panel is Olruggio proud of how good the soup tastes (it's even in a fancy bread bowl!), and yet the English translation downplays it by saying, 'Not bad, huh?'
Then the left panel, with it's sparkly background and close-up on Olly's face, goes further into how if he thought helping out with the housework was a pain, he wouldn't be capable of making stuff like this. Which is an understated way of saying that Qifrey can rely on him for things like this. (and he says it more outright in other chapters/the main series) But instead the English version is treating this soup like it's an apology for not helping out more. It's also really stupid because Olruggio was not making the soup as 'the least he could do' for Qifrey — he made it because he was hungry and wanted to eat it now! He literally admits this a few pages back!
Olruggio is not someone trying to do the bare minimum, he's someone trying to tell his control-freak of a friend that he wants to share in helping out. And the English version disappointingly misrepresents that here.
CHAPTER 10! Has several issues both Orufrey and wine related, and has several comparison segments. But because I maxed out Tumblr's 30-image limit, I can't include it here and so have to post it in a reblog. UGH. 😔 I'll post the link here in a moment.
In the meantime, image credits! The Japanese scans are from Comic-Days.com, the fan scanlations are thanks to Don't Quit Your Day Job, Robot Garden Scans, Brimhats/Nyaruhodou, and Kirbypoyopoyo, and the English version photos are from my own copy.
If chapters weren't mentioned, it's because I didn't notice anything significant enough to comment on. But if you know of something I missed, do let me know! And thanks for reading this far.

10/13/23
是那种很开心时,有时会一下子感受到的强烈的“but all this....they are not forever. I knew that all too well but I still don't want to go"
我:it's like we're in some old high school building. I love it.
M:I just knew you'd say the exact thing before you start talking lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wanna be I want to buy you pretty little things
。。想pet(不行)

(Ch 153): “The fact that you think love is complex and difficult proves how ignorant you truly are. The only reason why you find it difficult is because you don’t know what it is. Because you have constantly been imitating someone else’s way of showing it…” “If you were ever to become jealous, I would reassuringly tell you how much I love you. I would want to relieve your anxiety and make you feel at ease. I would say I’m sorry and understand how hard it may have been for you, even though you probably looked a little cute. For me, those things come naturally to mind. But did they come to you too?”
The Way I Loved You,很好地描写了Lil对这两个男人的爱情:
He is sensible and so incredible And all my single friends are jealous He says everything I need to hear and it's like I couldn't ask for anything better He opens up my door and I get into his car And he says you look beautiful tonight And I feel perfectly fine
But I miss screaming and fighting and kissing in the rain And it’s 2am and I'm cursing your name So in love that you act insane And that's the way I loved you Breaking down and coming undone It's a roller coaster kinda rush And I never knew I could feel that much And that’s the way I loved you
He can't see the smile I'm faking And my heart's not breaking Cause I'm not feeling anything at all And you were wild and crazy Just so frustrating intoxicating Complicated, got away by some mistake
就像Liloa对Cesar谈到:“Don’t talk about reason in front of me when I witnessed your anger countless times. When you’re angry, there’s always a stern and valid reason, but if I’m angry, it’s because of my irrational temperament. I’m so tired of hearing that from you.”(Ch 166)
lol

【Ayane Yamazakiの新曲『土星とユニコーン』について/About Ayane Yamazaki's new song "Saturn and the Unicorn".】
(Ayane Yamazaki)
(Ayane Yamazaki)
Japanese indie artist Ayane Yamazaki, voted the fourth best album by the Spanish alternative media, has entered a new phase with her single "Saturn and Unicorn," which will be released for worldwide distribution on February 24.
From 2022 to 2023, war raged, the Covid-19 entered its 8th wave, and a series of unprecedented events occurred in Japan, forcing people to change their minds. Against this backdrop, Ayane Yamazaki decided to write this song and express what she feels every day, not from somewhere else, but from her own city, to the young generation like herself around the world.
Ayane Yamazaki talks about how this song came to be on her radio program broadcast from a radio station in London, UK, as follows.
“Saturn is one of the most severe and stoic of all celestial bodies, and is the planet that is in charge of trials and complexes.
There is a line in the lyrics that reads, "I never say I want to go somewhere that's not here." Until now, "somewhere else than here" has been a kind of escape, a fantasy to sustain oneself.
But then astrological Saturn entered my Aquarius, the world became a serious reality, many things came to light, and I realized that it was no time to say, "I want to go somewhere other than here."
With that, I found my own sense of balance that allows me to go back and forth between reality and fantasy, the power of life and enlightenment, and this song was born."
--Ayane Yamazaki
And this is what she has to say about the sound.
"Up until now, I've been playing mostly mid-tempo dreamy pop songs with a floating feel, but 'Saturn and Unicorn' retains that vibe, but is more danceable.
I feel a sense of accomplishment that we were able to take what we had accumulated up to that point in terms of sound, vocals, and lyrics, and refine them to the point where they shine.
I think listeners can see how the 'past' and 'future' have changed from this song."
-Ayane Yamazaki
This love song begins with the acceptance of sadness, loneliness, and frustration. The song, which sings that it is okay to be yourself just as you are, reflects the mood of the current era.
