Went on this whole short inspiration go while listening to The Underworld from Epic and if you click the link you can see a little animatic version of this c: Vanilla is a fairy barbarian who was isekai'd into the DnD world and lost her mother in the process as Earth was destroyed, she's got some issues she's raging through against the remnants of it all-

I've always wanted to create a dnd campaign that involved court intrigue, where the players could try to play different sides against each other, but I don't have a good idea of how to do it, and any time I've asked for advice all I received was "your players are going to wreck everything don't even try lol." Do you have any advice on how to run a game like that?
Some of my compatriots here would jump on you and tell you to play a different game, but not me. No, since you said you wanted to involve court intrigue, I think Auntie Viv might have some wisdom for you.
Before I dive into the subject of courtly intrigues, different factions that players can play against each other have a natural habitat in D&D: the dungeon! If your underworld includes several groups of monsters, there can be all sorts of political interplay between them.
But let's say you want to spice up your game with some proper court intrigue. I say spice up, because if you want that to be the focus of your game, you really might want to look into other games that will support what you want to do better. But I certainly think such activities have a place in D&D, the game about gaining temporal power. If you're starting at level 1 or thereabouts, the characters probably won't be powerplayers yet. They'll more likely be pawns, or merely get glimpses of the true machinations of the Great Games of the Lords. But that doesn't mean you can't involve them. Have NPCs in the starting town be part of factions, either openly or secretly, and make interacting with them have consequences in the Great Games.
Then as the party levels up, make sure they gain not only in personal power, but also in political power. Give ways for players to integrate their characters into your world. Not knowing the particulars of what you have in mind, I can only give general advice, but think of at least one way each class can invest in the setting. Rogues may join or found guilds, fighters can be given forts to command, clerics can be given positions in the local temple, and so on and so forth. This will gradually involve them in the Great Games, and if you've made them care about things beyond their character sheets, you'll have ways to curb their worst excesses. If they threaten the king, the king can do way worse than deal damage to them: he can mess up their holdings.
As for the intrigues themselves, map out your factions and their goals. You should have some idea of what the various sides will do over time without player interference, and don't be afraid to roll with the punches when the party inevitably swerves things off the road. So if the king's trusted vizier, Baron Doomshadow, is funding bandits to disrupt trade along the King's Road, you might have a timeline of how the bandit activity ramps up. But if the players get involved in solving the bandit problem, have some contingencies for Baron Doomshadow to respond with.
Most importantly, integrate intrigues into the main activity that D&D supports: adventuring. Because at the end of the day, that's what the characters will excel at most no matter how they're built.
And don't be afraid to check out some game that's actually built for intrigues anyway, because it might have some neat tips and tricks you can use.
I hope any of that helped!

Hey what is godkiller? I’m curious
oooohhhhhhhhh anon my sweet child OUGH you are in for one HELL of a ride!! (spoilers for ~the first half of ep01 of GODKILLER: last hope, really just introductions) (not to be confused with the original campaign, godkiller: first blood, which i have yet to watch but i don't doubt its quality)
it's a dnd-esque series (show?) published by @transplanarrpg. it's a story that is driven by an overarching narrative of purpose and grief, as well as finding humanity in the supposedly monstrous. It's heavily inspired by Chinese mythology, which is a HUGE plus for me. The main character, Litany (they/them), played by Sea Thomas (also they/them), is the daughter of the Queen of the Underworld, Qi Gu. They were made as a weapon, and they failed in their purpose. The story is about them, their search for their own humanity, coming to terms with their own failures, and finding community and love, both familial and maybe some butch4butch romance? Who knows~?
It deals with a lot of heavy topics, like the emotional impact of child neglect, grief, and a fair amount of death, but there are very detailed individual trigger warnings at the beginning of each episode (and on youtube, idk about other platforms, the timestamps of the beginning and end of each possible trigger are in the description!) It's fully subtitled, including sound effects. In my experience, the subtitles really add to the experience, so i recommend watching with them on! The DM, Connie Chang (they/he/she), does the subtitling themself, so it's true to the intentions of the story.
It's entirely unscripted improv, recorded in-studio and clipped down to hour-long episodes with music and visuals. (yes I had to look up if it was scripted when I first watched it /pos It's SO SMOOTH)
anyway here's the trailer, definitely give it a shot ^^
youtube
and here's a link to the playlist of all the episodes for your convenience!

im stubborn and i like talking here's the reasons i put every character i did in side a into the tourney. I'll do side b later cause i gotta go to bed soon
important first note, quite a few of my decisions were because i was trying to get women in here and it was getting desperate because i had to cut out a lot of women for only being "just some guy" because they were written by a misogynist that made her sit on the sidelines and cheer for the male leads. The Woman Situation Is Always So Fucking Dire.
anyways on to the actual contestants im gonna start with the characters that have been causing the most people to start up shit about them not being just some guy
barry bluejeans (taz balance): 2 submissions, personal bias. i think a lot of people are misunderstanding what this tournament is tbh. this isnt about the "normal" characters, tho normalcy does play a factor in it. this is about dudes who are just some guy. there is a difference. barry is a dnd npc who wears blue jeans in a fantasy world and he loves his wife. yes he is a lich. yes he is involved in the main plot. he's also just chillin. like if the plot didn't happen the way it did barry would be playing sudoku or crosswords. he'd be an average man in a very fantasy world. he is so average and human its funny. he is just some guy
tommy (hlvrai): 1 submission, personal bias. his just some guy energy is so there. he gets a propeller hat that does nothing when all of his crew is getting cool guns and upgrades. his life goal is to go home and take his dog for a walk. he gets a chuck e cheese birthday party. he sounds like he's going to burst into tears at any moment. compared to the rest of the crew, tommy is comedically just some guy
ulala (persona 2): 1 submission, description swayed me. it described the list of characters in persona 2 and ulala was just "your roommate that wanted to go to a party". that's hilarious. also i was getting fucking desperate for women that didn't suck ass as i stated above
apollo (ace attorney): 2 submissions, personal bias, descriptions swayed me. yall the submissions for him were so fucking funny. he's just a lawyer. he just wants to do his job but he lives in the ace attorney universe so everything is fucked all the time. he would've been a normal lawyer if he hadn't met phoenix wright. he's just chillin.
ok now here's every other character
sasha james (tma): 1 submission, friend bias, good description. i asked r if i should put her in because they know tma and they said yes. submission described her as loving to organize and avoided many monsters by being just some guy.
reigen arataka (mp100): 2 submissions. i thought it'd be funny and i was right. he is also just a normal man pretending he's not and he refuses to give up the bit he 100% deserves to be here
joy (underworld office): 1 submission, friend bias. the mc is going through wild ghost related problems and she's just going . hey man. you good??? r's sister submitted her and im not letting her down dude she's awesome
junpei (zero escape): 3 submissions, personal bias. he is literally the only character who has no connection to the larger mystery he's just there because he loves 1 girl. he's PAINFULLY and VITALLY just a dude. i need him
horse (centaurworld): 1 submission. i thought it'd be really funny to include just a horse. her name is horse. thats fucking awesome dude
phone guy (fnaf): 2 submissions. he was the only character from fnaf that got more than 1 submission and there were like 9 fnaf submissions i kinda felt bad tbh. he was also the best example of just some guy out of all the fnaf submissions
gordon freeman (hlvrai): 1 submission. he is a guy playing a video game. he is the straight man to the rest of the crews antics and by god he plays his role well
joshua gillespie (tma): 4 submissions, friend bias, hilarious descriptions. he avoids getting killed because he's so good at following instructions despite him clearly supposed to be dying here. they said don't open the coffin so he didn't. simply don't tuesday
namari (dungeon meshi): 1 submission, personal bias. i like her c: she's pretty level headed compared to like. everyone else in laios's crew. she seems like somebody i could just be friends with and hang out with
shez (fire emblem): 3 submissions, hilarious descriptions. i might try getting into fire emblem because of this. ok so they got murdered in a previous game off screen and now they're the playable character of a new game in a new timeline and they're fucking everything up because they're just supposed to be some guy? thats so fucking funny holy shit i want to know more
henry stickmin (henry stickmin): 1 submission. henry stickmin. like idk i dont feel like i gotta explain this one he's a stickman
stanley (tsp): guaranteed entry
whole (chonny jash): 1 submission, friend bias. tbh i saw him and went oh fuck yeah thats the thing my friends like and then i put him in there. i dont actually know enough about chonny jash to say anything on this but i fully trust the submitter knew what they were doing
larry (pokemon): guaranteed entry
luke carder (inscryption): 1 submission, friend bias, good description. he is just a normal youtuber in the lore of the game. he fucking love card game. good for him man good for him
leorio (hxh): 3 submissions, friend bias, good descriptions. idk a lot about hxh but the descriptions of him compared to the other main characters was pretty convincing
barry the quokka (sonic): guaranteed entry
april o'neil (tmnt): 1 submission, friend bias. absolutely normal girl that just happens to be the one that found the turtles and become their friend
tsuzuru (a3!): 3 submissions, friend bias. descriptions definitely made him feel like a good fit. he's so good at being just some guy i actually thought he was a different character and was shocked when i went to grab images for the tourney and he wasnt the guy i thought he was. which is really funny. like who the fuck is he then. this didn't change my opinion or anything it was just so good
matt (woe.begone): 1 submission. woe.begone fans have ALWAYS been kind to me so they got some mod bias sprinkled in. i dont know what this guys deal is but in the dbtn tourney the guy who got in there had a giant fucking list of things that are happening to him all the time and apparently thats just what woe.begone is like so i believe it when told matt is normal in comparison. everything else is so batshit wild I Just Believe You
gilear (fantasy high): 2 submissions. he seems to be just a dad. wasn't going to get in at first tbh just for personal reasons but i was running out of characters that i felt actually fit the tournament well so ultimately he got in
emmet (lego movie): 4 submissions. honestly with the number of submissions we got, 4 submissions was basically a guaranteed entry. and emmet's whole story is about being just some guy
stahl (fire emblem): 1 submission, hilarious description. fire emblem fans are so funny. what do you mean he can only be perfectly average because everyone else improves/gets worse with him to keep him perfectly average. what the fuck. thats so good
doug (wolf359): 2 entries. i dont know jack shit about wolf359 and honestly the submissions didn't tell me a lot but it was enough to figure he qualifies and i was running out of characters that felt good for the tourney. i trust you wolf359 fans
jack townsend (tales from the gas station): 1 submission, good description. he works at an evil gas station and the description gave me no follow up on what an evil gas station is which is awesome. apparently the horrors are constantly happening and he's just kinda staring at them. he's not paid enough for this
frisk (undertale): guaranteed entry
brian pasternack (yuppie psycho): 1 submission. im gonna be super honest with you here. i dont remember. i know he qualifies but i have 0 thoughts about him. maybe thats a good thing in this tourney. he's an average office worker who has now been tasked with killing The Witch.
trevor (american arcadia): 4 submissions, personal bias, good descriptions. dude i fucking love american arcadia it's so fucking good what a nightmare. he's so normal they were going to kill him for not being entertaining enough

Just casual dnd things
I recently finished my first full campagin as a player. Here are some thing that happened
Chaining myself to the god of death for my girlfriend
We weren't dating yet
Our oracle gave up memories of one of their human parents to get information.
Said oracle also lost a leg
My girlfriend died, and the player who was the only cis het person in the group played another gay chacter
Said gay character got into another relationship with another pc
Oh we also stabbed and shot the god of death that I chained myself to
My girlfriend opened a ditch to the underworld in the middle of Europe.
Dolos kidnapped us to get us to Europe on no sleep
We had a ghost dog
I had to kill my half sister. Twice
I also punched Hermes and stole his helm
Our satyr started a rumor the zues has rabies
We licked rocks and drank from underworld rivers
My girlfriend became the leader of the broken, the beaten, and the damned
We called Orpheus a sad simp
We got a dinosaur made out of bones
"The box that held these monsters is open. To get rid of them close the box" -dm
"what's the box made out of"-me
"metal"-dm
"Cool I close the box with my metal powers"-me
"Shit"-dm
This campagin was wonderful.and so.much fun. I'm sure there's a lot I'm missing but that's fine.

I was thinking of finally making one of these without a D20 show, but I wanted to see it fight Critical Role. Opinions on each below the cut. There may be spoilers for any of them, especially since most of these are shows where I'm watching the newest season.
Sasaki and Miyano: Put this one on hold, not because it’s bad but if you are familiar with some of the other entries in this poll, I think you can understand. Very cute and they use the shoujo filter a lot.
The Legend of Vox Machina: I knew Percy wouldn’t stay dead (since he appears in a later campaign), but that didn’t make it hurt any less. Good stuff in the most recent season. I honestly thought they were bringing the show to a close with everyone heading separate ways, but there was foreshadowing so I guess there's more (I haven't seen the actually DnD campaign so I don't know where things end). Most of the characters got some development except Grog, and I think Pike could have gotten more. (Grog got quite a bit in the second season so I think it evens out at least)
Blue Lock: Hahaha this is a very underwhelming second season and that is due to the animation. I’m no expert in animation but once it was pointed out, I couldn’t ignore it. (Watching the Haikyuu movie also made me remember good animation). The CG was already pretty bad and now it's just yikes.
Heaven Official's Blessing: In comparison to the previous entry, this is so pretty. Watching the English dub because I wanted to see Howard Wang as Xie Lian. Nothing too eventful has happened yet, but I like it a lot.
Dimension 20: A Crown of Candy: I knew this was an intense campaign going in and it really is. The stakes are set up very early and only get higher and higher. I'm currently at the fight in the cathedral and I know it ends badly already but I'm still scared of what's going to happen.
Arcane: WOO NEW ARCANE SEASON. As of posting this, only the first three episodes are out, but it's wild. Animation is fire as always. So many interesting things have been set up. Jinx's activities in the Underworld. Vi being forced to choose whether to side with Piltover or Zaun. Viktor with the Hexcore seemingly inside him. Jayce, Ekko, and Heimerdinger learning more about the Arcane. Ambessa settling in Piltover's affairs. And Caitlyn!!! I honestly think she's the most interesting with how her mother's death has affected her. I'm so excited to see the rest of it.
Outer Banks: I watch this show because my sister's into it and yet I'm ahead of her in terms of watching it. I don't know how necessary a season 4 was, but it's not been too bad so far. I hate Rafe though. And JJ's been making some decisions that annoyed me even though he is my favorite.

Not to ramble about this 100 years too late, but I just randomly remembered playing that night when Astarion comes to bite the PC for the first time. Specifically, how we only get a few dialogue options of various hostility, which is sort of fine, in this situation, but if you do decide to be cooperative, you can't ask, to me, the most important question, "Okay, but will this turn me into a vampire?" I remember I really wanted to ask that back then. Because at that moment, that was honestly my biggest concern there.
Look, call me ignorant, but I've never really been particularly interested in or cared about vampires (until BG3 when I started caring about 1 vampire and his 7006 "siblings"), I'd never studied the related DnD lore, never even watched or read Twilight, haha. My knowledge of vampires back then was a mix of pop culture, knowing some Dracula, Van Helsing (the movie), the Underworld movies, and the previous Baldur's Gate games. So, I'd always thought it goes like this: You get bitten by a vampire, and unless you die, you now have the vampire germ, congratulations to your immortality and also eternal curse! Kind of like with zombies, but you have to get bitten in the neck, specifically. Though, I guess, technically, you'd have to die to become a vampire, either way... Eh, I'm not saying it makes sense. I'd spent like zero time thinking about it before this game.
Astarion doesn't even tell us he's just a vampire spawn (which is something I know that exists only because I played BG2) until the next morning. Hell, he even jokes about how a "real" vampire could turn us in the same situation, in the morning. Like, sure, he shouldn't have sneaked up on us, but hey, we all have to eat, so that didn't concern me as much in the end as not knowing whether that'd fundamentally change my character's life.
So, after the whole back and forth with him, I let him bite my character, not getting much of an explanation, and genuinely not sure whether she'd be fine or turn into a vampire. Is it just me or was anybody else like, "Guess I might die? 🤷♀️"
I mean, I'm not complaining, but funny in retrospect.
#Baldur's Gate 3#BG3#Astarion#does the gremlin man even know how much faith we put in him that night just because he needs our help?#I guess he does eventually#'you trusted me when it was an objectively STUPID thing to do' 😂

Hades Rewrite
His personality
Hades is known to be a stubborn and grouchy god. When he's with friends or family, he's a kind and inquisitive man who really enjoys philosophy and thrifting.
His fashion
He dresses very modern to fit in with the new souls coming into his realm and to ease them into death. He generally wears goth fashion or anything formal looking, most of what he wears is thrifted. His hair is usually long and worn up in a ponytail or bun, when short, he usually has it down.

His background
He and his brothers (Zeus and Poseidon) come from the titans Kronos and Rhea. He was swallowed by Kronos when he was a wee lad, and is forever (mentally) scarred by it. He later becomes king of the underworld. He has a strained relationship with Zeus and a neutral relationship with Poseidon, he's on decent terms with Hera, and is neutral to Hestia and Demeter.
Design notes
I wanted him to feel more lax. I also wanted him to be both feminine and masculine to offset what the hell we got in LO. The white streak in his hair is from stress. I also genuinely could not, for the life of me, decide what color his shading should be, so it's inconsistent as balls. His color scheme is primarily his holy colors and blood red. The Hades in the second picture will never be seen again with that hair cut because it's way too close to my dad's hairstyle and I don't want to think about that. Unless the people who love it beg me to keep it, it's never happening again unless I made it plot relevant. Fun tidbit: him and my DnD character share a design!
What else should you know?
He uses he/him and collects thrifted clothes like a crow with shiny things. He likes pomegranate wine, snowy evenings, and dolmades. Him and Kore are about the same age. His brothers also stressed him out to the point where he got his grey streak.
Thanks for reading!

Putting the actual piece under a readmore just in case 🫤
My DnD character died today for the first time—a setting-specific spell instantly beheaded him after he met one of the conditions of the spell by attacking its caster. Thankfully our Druid was able to Revivify him straight after (and the DM handwaved the clause about Revivify not reattaching body parts.) So truly he was only dead for like 10 seconds. In a fantasy world where death can essentially be reversed for the price of 300 GP, I have to wonder what death truly feels like.
The instant he fell, his soulbonded dragon companion would have felt a great howling vortex at the loss of him, even though she was just recently hatched. His best friends would have had to watch his head fly through the air and skid to a stop on the rough stone of the throne room, his blood spattering onto them from feet away. The druid would have had to scoop it up and hold it in her hands, his eyes still open and staring at his last enemy, as she resurrected his body.
Did his soul have time to travel to the Underworld? Did he see the leering face of Lutheria, dark goddess of death and nightmares, before he was yanked backwards towards the light?
It’s still horrific despite the fact that it was basically undone in an instant.

Lowkey I'd let a girl hurt me physically as long as they listened to my rants about different kinds of dragons and amphitheres are so cool and should be used more, like literally Quetzalcoatl is so fucking cool and just like I never see big old goobers like it in like any works of fiction I watch or play like unless there's alot in books but then again I don't read books really since only times I even buy books is like dnd books or books with cool covers/titles that would look nice on my shelf. I probably should be reading them but it's hard for me to visualize characters that aren't like monsters and stuff and pictures are really cool like if there's a big ass fight where someone is like fighting a drake in a maze and like throws a spear, I wanna know what that spear looks like and seeing it pierce the Drakes rough fearsome scales would be really cool. Spears in general are really cool, although I definitely like halberds more, maybe because I'm sweaty with the Lawbringer in For Honor but i only know like one true combo which sometimes is a 0-death. I think it's the only 0-death combo I know since I've never bothered to learn any since it just seems like a hassel plus knowing me I'd probably forget half the inputs and put in some other shit that ends the combo too early. Kinda like how I play Sin in Guilty Gear Strive, I really just be hitting buttons i think I remember to hit, his ults are so fucking cool tho, same with Giovanna and Bridget's even tho Bridget's ults are just yoyo combo and flaming bear on a motorcycle attack. God that games so cool, I think it's cooler than Fighterz, altho Xenoverse 2 definitely has it beat as I love fighting games where I can make my own character, since being able to make a moveset out of dozens of moves is awesome, really let's the creativity flow, same with Lego Worlds tho, literally being able to spawn in hundreds of Lego buildings on like the moon, a Christmas town, or just some forest is really fun and I do wish more Lego games did that. I guess that's part of why Fortnite Creative is really fun, just being able to spawn buildings from like tilted towers and the underworld is pretty cool. Okay I'm done now

Back with another dnd character from dreaming of death :3
This time Techno's, Pax!
Did I make them a harengon because of osmp Techno? Oh definitely. But I do think that Techno would play an harengon, it seems like his style
This was my first time drawing any kind of bunny looking character so I hope I did ok 😅
Anyway yeah, Techno's actually really invested in the game, he's also pretty good at rp! He's around people he knows he can trust so he's less awkward because he knows the won't judge him
(long ramble of Pax's lore and how the party forms under the cut)
At the beginning of the campaign Pax is in a position somewhat similar to Techno himself, being that they live in the woods with a bunch of animals.
The thing that actually prompts them to become a proper adventurer is that an displacer beast kitten he had taken in after finding it alone and injured was confiscated(stolen) by a religious research institution (cult, it's a cult, it just doesn't want admit it's a cult)
And uh Pax wasn't particularly down for that shit. So, obvious answer is kitten heist. This becomes a problem because Pax does not have the skills for that, or like... connections. They're a hermit and don't talk to like... Anyone generally. He is friends with a druid named Astra though (Astra is Wren's character btw). And she's more connected.
That's how they meet Juli and Niki's character Nyx(who is an arcane trickster rogue).
Juli actually has a connection to the cult because she was hired by them to do alchemy and stuff, but after hearing about the kittennaping and also about various other crimes committed (a lot of them stealing creatures or knowledge, with some people trafficking on the side) through Nyx (who has a large network of other thieves, assassin and various other criminal underworld stuff) she nopes all the way out of that job.
Anyway yeah... that's how the party starts to form. But back to more Pax specific stuff!
Pax is probably the second most responsible person in the party after Astra. And they both sort of accidentally become the parent figures of the group. Everyone else is chaos incarnate(Juli, Nyx, Clyde(Phil's character, joins the party with Juli because he's an old family friend of hers and has been traveling around with her)) or trauma town(Moon, Coal(Ranboo's character, they're and escaped experiment from the cult, she joins not too long after the party's formation)).
Pax definitely just wanted to get his cat back but realized they needed to destroy a cult and got attached to the dumbasses they're doing so with
Also, Pax didn't mention to the party that the cat he was rescuing was a displacer beast, they always just refered to her as his cat by her name, "Erebus" or more commonly than her full name by her nickname "Ere"
I think that's about all I can think of off the top of my head but feel free to send asks about anything about this au dnd or otherwise :D

Day 1 of trying to get you invested in my original book "Bound By Name" by posting short character intros!
William White, an albino ("What- Oh! No. No that's not how it works. My name's just a coincidence," ~Quote from the book) human-turned-satyr who somehow managed to worm his way into the heart of the most powerful fae there is! Now, faced with being the "new guy" in the fae Underworld, he'll have to struggle his way through whatever might be thrown at him.
Random notes: He's the ace/greyaro rep of this book, likes axes, is very spite fueled and was directly inspired by a dnd pc of mine!

Thought I’d make a little post about
DND Characters I Made That Nobody Asked For!
(Disclaimer: All these drawings were from like 2 years ago and may exclude minute design changes and the improvement of my personal art skills to the present)
Jimathem (They/Them)
Barbarian Dragonborn
Their name was meant to be a silly run-off of the first character I never used, Jonathan the Half-Orc (You won’t be seeing anything about him until I stop loathing his creation). They belong to a campaign set in the underworld due to their unfortunate demise.
In life, Jim was a respected individual to their townspeople but a threat to the town govern officials. One day, Jim was lured into the woods and deprived of life by their own horn. From the window of the soul to their brain, death would have been swift if only their killers hadn’t driven the oxblood colored hook up in serial propulsions. Now, Jim walks with a borrowed name and only fragments of their death left in their memory.
Charmy Langin (She/Her)
Sorcerer Haregon
Charm “Charmy” Langin is a less developed but cherished character of mine. She was intended for a friend’s campaign that never started, but I just couldn’t let go of her.
Some may have considered Charmy’s home life comfortable with her parents and little sister. However Charmy was a great appreciator of the arts, and wanted to travel to experience all that the world’s cultivations had to offer. Her love for artistry indirectly contributed to her fascination with the unseen, the unknown. In other words, mouth structures. You bet she’s getting into those molars, or gums, or whatever is in a bullywug’s mouth, and taking notes. Nature and all its mysteries, right?
