I've seen some very odd takes about certain language used in the scene where Mizrak rebukes Olrox at the end of Castlevania: Nocturne, which I think might be due to lack of knowledge about the historical context of certain things.
CW: historical racism against First Nation groups
I know reading academic articles isn't for everyone, but I have to wonder if a lot of people in the Castlevania: Nocturne fandom have not watched things like, say, Disney's 1995 animated Pocahontas, which, for all its many, many flaws, features the song, Savages. I'm not going to quote it in full here, you can find the song lyrics elsewhere (though the European colonizers do use the lines "vermin" and "barely even human", among other epithets). It's not a great song for a lot of reasons (among them being it tries to "both sides" things). But to look at the scene in CN where Mizrak, a Christian working in a European Christian church with at least some Europeans, calls Olrox, a First Nation man, an animal without the understanding of how Christian European colonizers (typically as part of or at least backed by some Christian churches) have viewed First Nation peoples and treated them, and certain epithets used for them, and how European Christian dehumanization of "new world" groups and non-Christians generally worked/works?
Well.
#castlevania nocturne#mizrak#racism#olrox#I mean it's probably a good thing people aren't watching the very racist movie#but it's weird considering the movie's impact on audiences and media generally and how well known it is#european and christian dehumanization of non-Christians and other marginalized peoples is well-known#and it has been weaponized many many times#to look at how Mizrak is specifically weaponizing that and ignoring what he is doing is a choice#also to ignore how Mizrak himself likely faced similar racism#and as a member of a marginalized group likely learned to weaponize himself after joining#which is a common thing as well in part as a survival tactic so you do not become a target of the in-group and get ostracized#you don't have to watch the Disney movie to know this stuff#it's just unfortunately probably a way a lot of people know about the phenomenon#like idk what do you think Christian Missions are for#a lot is happening in the scene and I'm not averse to the take that Mizrak is being very specific for a variety of reasons#I just think he is very aware of what he is saying#and why#don't see em as much lately but back when the show first came out stuff was wild#and some of the comments on my fics well#bigotry#I think the crew are doing very specific things about the weaponization of language#and how racism was used for colonization#and for indoctrination#and that is I guess still flying over folks' heads#like it's a double thing#vampires are considered animals by humans#but the word can have lots of meanings#like we've had the 'tired of elves being fantasy metaphors for racism' discourse#what do folks think vampires are

“Dee,” you let out a frustrated sigh, flinging yourself back on his bed, “We’ve been over this!”
“Oh, come on!” Dieter whines, “You’re hot, I’m hot. What would be the big deal?”
“Just because you want to fuck someone doesn’t mean it should be me!” You huff, rolling your eyes. Dieter flops beside you on his bed with a frustrated groan.
“It’s not fair,” he whines, laying on his side and propping his head up with his fist. “You’re my best friend! Why wouldn’t I ask you? It wouldn’t change anything just because we sleep together.” He tries to argue. “Plus, it’s not like we haven’t fooled around some.”
“We were both drunk,” you bark out a laugh, “I don’t think that counts. All we did was make out on your couch and you fell asleep dry-humping me.”
“Could try again.” He suggests, wiggling his eyebrows.
You’ve lost count now of how many times he’s tried this during your years of friendship. Dieter gets this wild hair up his ass convinced he wants to sleep with you, only for someone else to come along and occupy him. You roll on your side to face him. Eyes roaming the features of his face: his pouty lips with his bottom lip stuck out further as he begged, the aquiline shape of his nose, and lastly, his big brown eyes, bloodshot and wide pupils from whatever substance he took today. Pills, coke, booze, you name it, Dieter Bravo snorted or ingested it. You smirked, an idea forming in your head.
“How bad do you want to fuck me, Bravo?” You ask in a sultry tone, your fingers scratching through the scruff of his jaw, leaning into him, tracing your nose softly against his.
“Really fucking bad.” He breaths out, his lips ghosting over your own, stretching his neck, attempting to slot his mouth over yours.
“Then I’ll make a deal with you,” you smirk, running your fingers through his thick brown waves, pulling his head away from you.
“Okay.” He giggles giddily as you loosen the grip on his hair, “What are you thinking?”
“Three months — no drugs, no booze, no sex,” you let out breezily, “Then I’ll let you fuck me.”
“What?” Dieter all but shrieks, eyes widening at your proposal.
“You heard me,” you say, booping his nose with your index finger, “You want to fuck me so bad. Need to be sober for three months.”
“What am I supposed to do for three fucking months?” He asks, flopping onto his stomach on the bed.
“Be sober.” You shrug, letting out an evil cackle, and gently pat his back.
“Deal,” Dieter grumbles into his comforter. “Three months will fly by.” He huffs, shrugging. “I’ll be fine,” he mumbles more to himself.
—
He looks up from his phone, watching the party around him. Women and men gyrating on the makeshift dance floor. A week into this deal with you and he feels fine. He won’t cave. A handsome brunette offers him some random pill but he declines, making his way through the house.
“Hey, Dieter!” someone shouts from a room off the hallway he’s been walking down.
“Hey man,” Dieter said, popping his head in through the door. “Guess I found the chill party, huh?”
“Have a seat.” A skinny redhead with tits trying to spill out of her top says, patting the spot next to her, “We can have fun in here.”
Dieter gulps, nodding his head as his eyes take her in, making his way to the spot next to her on the couch. When he sits down, he feels his phone vibrate in his palm. He looks down to see you sent him a message.
I know you went to some party tonight. Don’t forget our deal.
Dieter: Why do you hate me?
I don’t hate you. 😘
Dieter: At a party with a redhead sitting next to me with tits the size of bowling balls. You hate me.
You can back out at any time.
Dieter: NO! Why’d sex have to be off the table?
“Want some?” The redhead asks, offering Dieter the joint in her hand. He shakes his head with a polite no thank you, redirecting his focus back to his phone. He chuckles, reading your message.
You got tested, doofus. I’m not going to sleep with you if you’re not clean.
Dieter: What if I get tested before we fuck?
No.
With a sigh, he pockets his phone, trying to pick up what is being discussed around the circle of people passing the joint around. He spends the rest of his time at the party in this small room, trying to steer clear of greater temptation down the hall. Dieter wouldn’t have even come to this party had his manager not forced him to. Something about socializing with some model and trying to get on a director's good side. Who the director and model were, Dieter had no idea. All he could think about was you, wondering what you were doing, if you were even serious about this deal.
“Are you sure you don’t wanna hit this?” The redhead purred, leaning into his side, her breasts brushing against his arm.
Dieter clears his throat, trying his best to avoid looking at her cleavage. “Nope. I’m good.” He murmurs with a shake of his head.
Since the moment he laid eyes on you, Dieter knew he wanted to fuck you and wasn’t about to lose his chance now.
—
“Being sober is so fucking boring!” Dieter whines, sitting on the opposite end of his couch, snatching the open KitKat off his coffee table. “I don’t get why people do this.”
“Dieter. It’s been a month.” You huff, rolling your eyes as he takes a giant bite off the chocolate bar.
“I’m jus-“ he continues to chew, “I’m just saying, it’s boring! I don’t know how you do this.” He says after swallowing the sweet treat.
“Find a different hobby,” you say, shrugging your shoulders, picking the lint off your leggings, “I don’t know what to tell you, ya big baby.”
“I’m not a big baby!” Dieter huffs, tossing the KitKat back onto the coffee table. “I don’t have any hobbies besides fucking, drinking, and drugs!” He says, leaning towards you, his arms caging you in against the arm of his couch. Your throat feels dry suddenly, taking in his steely expression, “How am I supposed to release all this stress?” He asks, quirking his brow, his mouth so close you can smell the chocolate on his breath. Dieter gently kisses the corner of your mouth, his lips making a soft trail from your jaw to your neck, “Hmm?” He asks, waiting for a response before his teeth gently scrape that spot behind your ear.
You let out a soft whine feeling his hard length against your thigh.
“No!” You bark out, gently pushing him away from you, attempting to catch your breath. “Not the deal, bucko. It’s only been a month.”
“Fine,” Dieter huffs, sitting back on the couch and folding his arms across his broad chest. “Then what the fuck am I supposed to do with this?” He asks, nodding his head towards the tent in his pants.
“You’ll be fine.” You say, giving him a pointed look and grabbing the TV remote to turn something on to distract you after whatever that was. “Do we need to watch The Lion King?” You ask, a grin spreading across your face.
“Why? So I can be even more confused about my feelings for Scar?!” He laughs, grabbing his crotch and adjusting himself. “He’s a bad guy but maybe he’d be fun.” He adds with a shrug
“You’re so fucking weird.” You laugh, shaking your head, nudging his shoulder with your own.
“Fuck off,” Dieter grumbles, scooting his hips down to get more comfortable and stretching his arm across the back, “Actually, no. Come here,” he says, wrapping his arm around you and pulling you closer to his side. You lay your head on his shoulder, breathing in his scent with a smile. He lets out a sigh, laying his cheek against the top of your head. “I like this,” he whispers as you find a movie to watch.
“What?” You whisper, scooting closer to him.
“New hobby.” He hums, placing a kiss on your head, “Cuddling.”
You roll your eyes, biting your lip to keep from smiling. You are really beginning to like this Dieter. Sober Dieter is a lot sweeter.
—
Dieter sits in his art studio, contemplating what to paint. The drugs tended to spark that creativity in him, his hands moving mindlessly until some weird fucked up masterpiece was sitting in front of him. Except now. Now he sits wondering what he’s even doing in the room he’s avoided for weeks upon weeks. Unable to make that same spark come to life, staring out the window to his backyard. Maybe I could do a landscape, he thinks.
“What the fuck am I thinking?” He groans, throwing the paintbrush down in defeat, “I’m not fucking Bob Ross.”
He grabs his phone, opening it to the first thing he sees, a message from his dealer.
Hey Bravo. Been a while man, you good?
His palms begin to sweat, fingers itching to respond. What would he even say?
Sorry, your highest-paying customer is sober.
Hey, yeah everything’s great!
Actually everything is really fucking bad.
Can I stop by?
Then a notification pops up that you shared something on Instagram, deciding to click on it, his focus is immediately on you. He smiles, seeing the selfie you posted. You, with your soft lips, your sweet smile, your eyes twinkle like you’ve got a secret you’re not ready to share. Just you.
Dieter had a hard time admitting to himself that he loved you. Not the kind of love shared between friends but more.
The first time it popped into his brain had been during a drug-fueled bender when you took care of him during and after, reminding him to drink water, laying in his bed with him because he didn’t want to be alone, scratching his back, and putting up with his demanding whines of discomfort.
The second time had been during a drunken night where he was trying to forget about his feelings. Only for him to wind up banging on your apartment door at four am, when he cried himself to sleep on your couch about how much he loved you, while you softly exhaled and shook your head with a pitiful face and told him - Dieter, you’re drunk.
The third time and when he finally accepted it was the following morning, waking to the sunlight shining brightly into your living room. His body and head feeling so achy, slumping off your couch, making his way to your room. He smiled watching you deep in sleep, comforter wrapped around your shoulders and legs sprawled out. He let out a soft sigh, his feet slowly padding to your bed, nudging your shoulder when he was close, softly whispering - scoot over - before slipping under the covers as you created space for him, observing the crease of your eyebrows as you moved, the little pout of your lips, and the twitch of your nose as you slept. This is what he wanted to see every morning for the rest of his life. You.
He let out an exasperated sigh, putting his phone down to stare at the blank canvas again.
“Fuck!” He exclaimed, quickly grabbing some paint and squirting red, yellow, blue and white to his pallet. Not even noticing the joint he’d left last time he was in this room on the side table as inspiration finally struck.
—
“Dieter!” You call out as you open his front door being met with silence as you make your journey further into the darkened foyer, “I got those tacos you like!” Trying to coax him out of wherever it is he’s hiding.
You’re certain he’s changed his mind on the deal you’d made. It’s been weeks since you heard from him, past the three month mark now and the only reason you’re here is because he hasn’t been answering his phone and worry was getting the better of you.
“Dee?” You try again, flipping lights on in each room you pass until you come to the kitchen, “This isn’t funny dude.” You shout, setting the bag of food on the counter before going in search of him.
Making your way deeper into his home, you notice a light shining from under the door to Dieter’s studio. You can hear movement on the other side of the door.
“Dieter?” You ask hesitantly, tapping the tips of your fingers against the door. “You in there?”
You hear a groan before distinctly hearing something plunk to the ground. Taking a deep breath, you push the door open to see Dieter lying on the floor in front of a blank canvas. Paint is splattered all over the place, his paint brushes skewed about, and a cup he kept close by lies on the floor, surrounded by a murky puddle of paint-infused water.
“Dieter,” you hesitate, approaching his still form. “Hey, man. Get up,” your foot reaching to kick against his leg lightly. His speech is slurred as he grumbles, something you can’t decipher. Well - at least he’s still breathing, you think, furrowing your brow.
“Come on, Dee.” You sigh, feeling defeated. Hunched over his form, “Let’s get you to bed.”
“No,” he murmurs as you turn him flat on his back. “Stay here,” he groans out, eyes tightly squeezed shut like a toddler who just got woken up from his nap, reaching his arms out towards you, waving them in the air until his hand makes contact with your arm. Dieter moves on his side pulling you down with him, wrapping one arm around your shoulders and the other around your waist, a satisfied hum leaving his chest.
“Dieter,” you let out an annoyed huff, “This is great and all, but uh- why the fuck are we on the floor?”
“Sleep,” he murmurs into your hair.
“I am not sleeping on the floor.”
“Shut up,” Dieter whines, tangling his legs with your own. “I want sleep.”
You let out a soft laugh, shaking your head against his chest as he holds you against him. His breathing calms as you lay there in silence on the floor of his little studio, wondering what it might have been that he took this time.
“I made it,” Dieter huffs against your hairline. As if the thoughts in your head were seeping through like osmosis into his brain. “Three months. No drugs, no booze, no sex.”
Your head tilts up, eyeing him suspiciously.
“You’re beautiful, you know that?” he grins, bleary eyes raking across the features of your face.
“Flattery will get you nowhere, Bravo.” You give a teasing glare. “So you really made it three months?”
“Mhm,” Dieter hums with a shit-eating grin. “Bet you didn’t see that happening.”
“No, I did not.” You comment, quirking your brow.
“I need to…” Dieter pauses, worrying his bottom lip between his teeth, “I need to show you something.”
He gently moves you away, propping himself up to stand. “Ew,” he fusses, looking down at his soaked sock standing in the murky puddle of water. “Why’d you let us lay so close to that?!”
You scoff, rolling your eyes, giving him a pointed look.
“Right.” Dieter says bashfully, extending his hands to you, “Come on.”
Dieter gently pulls you to stand with him before taking a deep breath and leading you to the spot, the place he always puts his latest project to admire and contemplate, on the wall.
“So, I realized something during this three month stint.” He starts, clearing his throat before continuing. “I uh… Well…” he steps forward, turning on the singular light above the darkened spot on the wall, revealing a painting of you.
“Oh my god,” you gasp, shocked that this is what Dieter has been working on. A galaxy seeping into a meadow surrounding your face. The blues and purples of the galaxy blend in beautifully with greens and yellows of the meadow. The expression of your face stunning against the canvas. Is this how Dieter sees you?
“I’ve been working on this for weeks now.” Dieter mumbles shyly, scratching the back of his head, “I don’t know how to do this or how to make you believe me but…” he pauses, taking in a deep breath, “I love you.”
“Dee,” you murmur, taken aback by his confession, surging forward, wrapping your arms around his neck, one hand gripping the back of his neck to bring his lips to your own in a desperate kiss. Your fingers weave through his hair, gripping him to you tighter, sweeping your tongue against the seam of his lips he opens his mouth to let you in.
Your mouth trails down his jaw to his neck. “A- and not just like a friend but more than that. I know you’re probably gonna be all Dieter, you didn’t stick to the deal but I swear I did.” He hisses as the pulse in his neck thrums wildly against your lips, “I just-“ he gasps, feeling you lovingly bite against his pulse point, arms wrapping around your waist in a tight grip, “You initiated the bet - for me to get sober, and then I did. All these years I was doing all that shit to try and drown the noises inside my head but they aren’t so loud once I actually hear what they’re saying and the main thing they’re saying now is I’m an idiot for not being honest with you.”
“Dieter,” you let out an annoyed huff, looking into his melancholy russet eyes, “I love you too, okay? Now shut up.”
“Amazing,” he breathes out with a dopey grin, leaning forward to meet your lips again. You groan as his tongue slips between your lips, exploring your mouth with fervor. He guides you backward until the desk that sits in his studio bumps the back of your thighs. His hands glide down, cupping the back of your thighs, lifting you on top of the desk.
“Fuck,” you yelp, letting out a breathless laugh as his lips meet yours. Your hands reach for the bottom of his shirt, slipping underneath to feel the warmth of his skin against your palm.
“I love you,” Dieter breathes against your jaw, lips trailing down to your neck, “So fucking much.”
“Love you too,” you moan, bunching the shirt he’s wearing up his torso. He breaks away, letting you sweep it off him with a toss to the floor. Dieter grins, tugging your shirt off, reaching behind your back to undo the clasp of your bra with one hand, slipping the thin material off your shoulders to expose your chest to him.
“Nice,” Dieter hums, massaging your tits in his hands, brushing his thumbs across your nipples, “Always wondered what these bad boys looked like underneath.”
“Fucking christ,” you huff, rolling your eyes, “So fucking weird.”
He smiles devilishly before nipping your pert nipple gently, sucking it into his warm mouth, swirling his tongue around it. You let out a soft moan, feeling the ache between your thighs become more persistent. Fingers carding through the soft, wavy curls on his head, pushing at his shoulders.
“Off, " you demand as your hands grip the waistband of his pants, trying to push them down, “Off.”
“Easy,” Dieter smiles, slowly pushing his pants down, cock springing free and standing proudly.
“Fuck me,” you whisper in shock, taking in the sight of his length. Thick and long. You had a good idea, considering how many mornings you’d woken up with the thing poking you in the ass, but to see it hanging heavily between his thighs was monumental. He grunts when your hand reaches to touch him, squeezing him firmly at the base.
“Your turn,” Dieter hissed, grabbing your leggings. You let go of him, helping to lift your hips as he quickly tugged them down your legs. “Fuck me,” he utters, taking in the dark patch of your underwear, his hands rubbing up your thighs, teasing the soft skin of your inner thigh.
“Dieter,” you gasp, gripping his bicep, his thumb making tight circles around your clit against the cotton of your underwear. He hums, laving his tongue against your collarbone, licking a line up your throat as his fingers push the gusset of your panties to the side.
“Fuck,” Dieter pants, feeling the wetness between your folds. His fingers sliding up and down your seam, coating his fingers in your slick, teasing your entrance with the tips of two thick fingers.
“Dee,” you whine, breath hitching as your hips squirm on top of the desk when he pushes his fingers in torturously slow. “I need more.”
“You’ll get more,” he rasps, his fingers continuing their slow movements. In and out. In and out. In and out. His thumb moves to that bundle of nerves, alternating between sweeping back and forth and drawing firm circles around your clit.
You feel the pool of arousal building at the end of your spine, warmth spreading through your limbs like a wildfire. Your breath quickens as your walls tighten around his digits.
“Oh god,” you moan, gripping his bicep firmer, “Fuck. Dieter, you’re gonna make me come.”
“Come for me, baby.” He whispers against your ear. Fingers scrubbing against your walls faster, deeper until they hit that spot inside that feels impossible to reach on your own.
“Oh fuck!” You cry out, throwing your head back as the flames within consume you whole. Your back arching, pushing your chest against his, “Dieter,” you whimper, head resting against his shoulder as his fingers work you through your orgasm.
He scoops you up, flipping you over his shoulder, carrying you out the door of his studio, down the hall to his room.
“Dieter!” You shriek, giggling knowing he must be a sight to see right now. His heavy member bouncing between his thighs as he marches with you over his shoulder. “What about your back?!” You ask, grinning, taking notice of the walls of his room.
“Don’t fucking care,” he says, flipping you onto his bed, pushing your legs apart, creating space for him between your thighs. He crawls up the length of your body, arms resting on either side of your head. His cock pressing against your thigh, realizing what is to come next. “You sure you wanna do this?” He asks, his lips barely touching your own, breathing each other in, causing a dizzying arousal to pool in your tummy.
“Yes,” you breathe, hands trailing up the expanse of his back, gripping his shoulders. He grips his shaft; a breathy moan escapes you as he slowly strokes your seam with his tip. “Dieter,” you plead, nails creating half-crescent moons into his shoulders when his tip catches on your entrance.
“I got you,” he croaks, repeating himself as he pushes in, “I got you.”
“Oh fuck,” you gasp, feeling your walls make space for him inside your warmth. He lets out a hiss as your nails dig deeper into the skin of his shoulders, definitely leaving marks he’ll see tomorrow.
“Oh my god,” Dieter groans, his head coming to the crook of your neck, pushing his cock in deeper until you can’t decipher where you begin and he ends. You moan, feeling so incredibly full. You never knew sex could feel like this, and it’s barely even started. He holds still, allowing both of you to get used to the feeling of one another.
“Dieter,” you pant, squirming against him, “I need you to move.”
“Fuck me.” He grunts, feeling your walls clench around him. He slowly pulls out before thrusting back into your heat, his hips creating a slow, deep rhythm. “You’re so fucking perfect.” he whimpers, tongue flicking across your sternum. “So,” thrust, “fucking,” thrust, “perfect.” thrust. You release a broken moan into the room, the sound of skin slapping filling the air around the both of you.
“Harder,” you beg, “Dee, please. Harder.”
He releases a shattered breath, sliding one hand down your side and around your hip, bringing your leg up to rest against his ribs before snapping his hips into you.
“Dieter!” You scream out, back bowing off his bed. It feels so intense. His cock shredding up into you at this angle, hitting that spot perfectly just like his fingers. Your muscles begin to tense, thighs shaking as he continues thrusting into you at a frenzied pace.
“I’m not gonna last long,” Dieter admits, sitting up on his knees, grabbing your ankle to place your leg against his shoulder, staring down at you, watching your tits bounce with every firm thrust he gives you. “So fucking hot,” he groans, his hand sliding down your leg to your center. You let out a ragged moan as his fingers lightly pinch and pull your bundle of nerves, the impending wave of your orgasm getting closer and closer. “Need you to come, baby.” he all but begs, the muscles in his stomach tensing, trying to stave off his own orgasm, “I’m so fucking close.”
“I’m close,” you pant, nodding your head, “So fucking close. Kiss me.”
Dieter wraps your leg around his waist, collapsing on top of you, capturing your lips in a bruising kiss. The band in your stomach tightens more as your tongues massage one another, your walls fluttering around his cock, beginning to milk him for all he’s worth.
“Fuck,” Dieter whines, hips stuttering, feeling him pulsate inside of you, painting his come against your inner walls, pushing you over the cliffs edge as your pussy squeezes around him tighter. “Fuck fuck fuck fuck!” He whimpers, slumping against you, head resting between your breasts, trying to catch your breath.
“That was the best sex I’ve ever had,” Dieter murmurs against your sternum, placing a chaste kiss before peering up at you. “Worth the wait,” he adds with a wink.
“Was pretty good, Bravo,” you sigh with a nod. He lets out a hiss as you clench around him.
“Stop that,” he says, pulling out with a groan and flopping beside you on the bed, lying on his side, arm propping up his head, facing you. “Ya know, I really wasn’t looking forward to the whole being sober thing.” He admits, with a mock frown, “But it isn’t that bad.” he adds with a shrug.
“No, it’s not,” you laugh softly.
“I thought it would be worse than it was, but I kinda like it,” Dieter smiles, hovering over you, “Especially since it led to this.” He places a kiss against the corner of your smiling mouth, “And if I stay sober… will this keep happening?” He asks in a whisper, hesitantly awaiting your response.
“Dee,” you hum, “You got me. Just gotta take it day by day.”

Dear Zuko,
I’m sorry for whatever I did that made you angry with me. Please forgive me. I don’t want you to be upset.
Sincerely, Ursa
P.S. Destroying Chan’s house was wrong, but since it was him, I won’t chide you. Jia-Li and I also participated a bit, so it would be hypocritical, anyways.
P.P.S. I’m not friends with Ruon-Jian anymore.
Though you had been at sea for quite a bit of time now, you still had not grown bored of staring at the ocean. Jia-Li had sat back down under the shade of the silk canopy a while ago, eating a bowl full of ice cream and watching you in amusement as you stood at the prow and peered down into the water.
“It’s so beautiful,” you said.
“You’ve said that like a hundred times,” Jia-Li teased you.
“I know, I just…I just can't get over it. I’ve never seen anything quite so blue,” you said, though this was somewhat a lie. That blue from your memories, it resembled this water in depth, though not in texture — the water was clear and lucid, whereas the blue you remembered was harsh and matte.
“I guess I should be glad that you’re enjoying yourself already! Just think about it — you haven’t even gotten to Ember Island yet, and you’re having so much fun. Imagine how much better it’ll be once you’re there!” Jia-Li said.
“I can’t wait,” you said dreamily. “As long as we can go swimming, I’ll be happy.”
“Of course,” she said. “We’ll swim every day! My brother wrote to me, he said that the tides have been forgiving this season. Maybe I can convince him to teach you how to ride the flying dolphin fish. He always shoos me away whenever I ask, but it’s impossible to hate you, Ursa, so he’ll definitely say yes.”
You had been growing accustomed to that name. It still felt like an alias at times, but it was a familiar one, said around you so often that you barely even hesitated before responding to it.
“It’s fine if he doesn’t,” you said. “Though it would be nice to learn something like that…”
“Maybe you should ask him!” Jia-Li said. “There’s no way he can refuse then!”
“I wouldn’t want to be imposing,” you said immediately, shaking your head. “He shouldn’t have to do something just because he’s too guilty to say no.”
“No, I was more thinking along the lines of ‘you’re pretty and he doesn’t say no to pretty girls’, actually,” she said. “He’ll be happy to oblige you, but if it’s a request from his little sister, he’s likely to say no just to be contrary.”
“We’ll see,” you said after ruminating on it for a second. “Also, thank you for the compliment.”
“It’s just the truth,” Jia-Li said. “But since we’re on the subject — I know you don’t have memories, so you can’t answer about your past life, but what about recently? Have you had a crush on someone before?”
“A crush?” you said.
“Yeah! I mean, have you ever liked anyone?” she said.
“I like a lot of people,” you said. “For example, you and Ty Lee.”
“No, silly, not in that way. I mean liking someone romantically,” Jia-Li elaborated. “I know a few of the boys in the Royal Fire Academy for Boys have been talking about you, so I was just curious.”
“Oh!” you said, covering your face with your hands so that she could not see the embarrassment blooming on it. “I didn’t know that they were.”
“Sure, of course they are! They talk about a lot of us, so it makes sense, and anyways I wasn’t lying when I said you’re pretty. They’re all too scared to actually talk to you, but I’m sure that if you went to the market alone and met one of them, they’d propose on the spot,” she said.
The academies for girls and boys had separate campuses, but they were run conjointly, so that your breaks aligned and your events were held in tandem. Though you tended to avoid attending sporting matches, you had gone to one or two in your time as a student, so you supposed that must’ve been when you had become a viable prospect for whatever nonsense Jia-Li was spouting.
“I don’t talk to any boys,” you pointed out. “Even if any of them like me, I don’t know them, so I can’t say I like them back.”
“You talk to the prince a lot,” she said.
“What?” you said.
“Did you really think I didn’t notice how often you send letters to him via Bian?” she chided. You coughed uncomfortably.
“Um, well, he is my benefactor, so I have to keep him updated with my day-to-day activities,” you said. “It’s, er, part of my scholarship, you know.”
It was not, but Jia-Li seemed to buy the lie readily enough, nodding sagely, though not without a dramatic pout.
“That does check out, but it’s not nearly as exciting as a secret love affair or letters written out of pining and sent with longing, stamped with your heart’s greatest desire for a man that can never be your own!” she said.
“Sorry?” you said. “I don’t think any of that fits the situation, though.”
She sighed. “It’s okay.”
“What about you? Do you have any crushes?” you said, recognizing that this was the logical next step in the conversation. Jia-Li blushed and looked at the wooden paneling of the deck, using her fingers to twirl the hair which escaped her ponytail to frame her face.
“Yes,” she said. “Kind of. But it’s someone who I shouldn’t like, and who would never like me back, so I’ve never said anything.”
“Who?” you said. “Your family is pretty influential, isn’t it? I can’t imagine most anyone rejecting you. Unless you like Prince Zuko and are projecting your ‘heart’s greatest desire for a man that can never be your own’ onto me?”
“No way!” Jia-Li said. “It’s more complicated than him being of a higher ranking than me.”
“Then what is it?” you said.
“He’s my brother’s best friend!” she said, all in a rush, her entire face in flames at the confession.
“Oh,” you said, cringing in empathy. “I see. He would not approve?”
“Definitely not,” she said. “But there’s something worse than him not approving: marrying this boy would mean having Kaho as a sister-in-law!”
“Oh, Agni,” you said, slapping your palm against your forehead. How had you forgotten? It was the only reason Jia-Li was somewhat exempt from Kaho’s reign of terror, despite her association with you: her brother and Kaho’s were best friends. But if she liked Kaho’s brother, then what would that mean?
“That’s the scenario,” she said. “And to top it all off, he’s notoriously popular with girls. He probably wouldn’t even look at me twice. I’ll always just be Ruon-Jian’s annoying little sister to him.”
“I doubt that that’s true,” you said as you approached the docks. “Really, Jia-Li, I don’t think that's the case. You said his family will be on Ember Island at the same time as us?”
“Yeah,” she said quietly. “Although Kaho mentioned not being able to come — something about volunteering as a scribe for some official meeting that the Fire Lord will be hosting over the weekend.”
“Perfect! That’ll be our goal, then,” you said.
“Huh?” she said.
“We’re going to get you noticed by your crush! Who cares about the consequences? Kaho and your brother can just deal with it, and if they have something to say, then they can talk to me,” you said.
“That’s nice of you to offer, but what would you even do?” Jia-Li said.
“I don’t know,” you said. “Talk to them, I guess. Kaho already doesn’t like me, so it’s not a tragedy if she hates me more, and I don’t know your brother that well, so if he and I don’t get along after that kind of conversation, it won’t be a great loss.”
“Do you really think we can do something like that?” she said.
“We have to try,” you said. “You deserve it, Jia-Li.”
“Thank you,” she said, swallowing. “You’re a really good friend, Ursa. If you ever change your mind and decide you do like Prince Zuko after all, just let me know—”
“Jia-Li!” you warned her, though the threat fell flat, as she only laughed in return.
Jia-Li’s home on Ember Island was close to the docks, and it was right on the water. She told you as you walked up the seashell-lined path that that stretch of sand was actually a private beach that belonged to her family, so you wouldn’t have to worry about anyone bothering you while you were there.
“Sometimes my brother goes to the bigger beach a little ways away, though,” she said. “They like seeing other people our age and hanging out with them and whatnot.”
“Maybe when I’m a little more confident, we can try it,” you said. “For now, I’m just glad we have our own space where I don’t have to be worried about embarrassing myself in case I drown or something.”
“I wouldn’t let you drown,” Jia-Li said. “But I’m fine with that plan. It’s not like I have some huge desire to be on a massively crowded beach with the others, so it’s not heartbreaking for me if we just stay here the whole time.”
“Now, now, not the whole time,” you said. “We have to leave the house at some point so we can meet this guy you like!”
“I’m still not so sure about that,” she said, pulling out a key from her pocket and using it to unlock the front door. “Now hush, I don’t need my brother overhearing us. We can talk more later tonight or something.”
“On it,” you said, pretending to seal your lips shut. She rolled her eyes before motioning you after her. Carefully, you stepped into the grand foyer, scuffing your shoes on the welcome mat to rid them of the sand. Jia-Li smiled in approval, presumably at your politeness, and you smiled back at her.
“Mother, father!” Jia-Li shouted. “Ruon-Jian! Ursa and I are here!”
Jia-Li’s mother peeked her head around the corner, nodding demurely at the two of you, though it was deeper and more reverent when it came to you. She looked exactly like Jia-Li, only a little older, her features aged, the cut of her face sharper.
“It is good to meet you,” she said. Her voice was musical and quiet, carefully controlled — it was the culmination of years of training as the wife of a high-ranking Fire Nation official. It was what you and Jia-Li and Kaho and Ty Lee would one day sound like, once you had graduated from the academy and were ready to enter society properly.
“And you as well, madam,” you said, clasping your hands, bowing your head slightly. “Thank you for welcoming me into your home. It is greatly appreciated.”
“You are so polite,” Jia-Li’s mother said, the slightest traces of happiness flickering over her face. “I am glad Jia-Li has such an exemplary friend to look up to.”
“Nice to see you, too, mother,” Jia-Li said. Her mother laughed, opening her arms.
“Come here, then,” she said. Jia-Li brightened, racing into her mother’s arms and hugging her. You looked away, feeling like you were intruding on the moment and wishing you had your own mother to embrace like that.
“Where’s father?” Jia-Li said. Her mother sighed.
“He and Admiral Chan were called back to the palace for some important meeting, so they’re not on the island for the moment,” she said.
“It must be the meeting Kaho is scribing for,” you said.
“Most likely,” Jia-Li said. “Do you think he’ll be able to come back before I leave for the academy again? I haven’t seen him in so long.”
“I’m not sure, darling,” her mother said. “If he is still in the capital by the time your boat leaves the docks, I will send him a message to stay in the capital and receive you before he returns.”
“Thank you,” she said. “What about Ruon-Jian? Where is he?”
“Oh, that boy, he’s being as troublesome as ever. I believe he’s locked in his room at the moment. Ruon-Jian! Please come downstairs and say hello to your sister and her friend!” her mother said. It was strange — even yelling, she sounded soft and polite, which should not have made sense but somehow did.
“Why?” a deep, grumbling voice said. There were heavy footsteps on the stairs, evidence that Jia-Li’s brother was on his way but wasn’t exactly happy about it. “I don’t wanna meet Jia-Li and her stupid friend — woah.”
Her brother was tall and willowy, with shaggy brown hair that fell into his face, giving him an effortlessly cool appearance. His eyes were the same color as Jia-Li’s, but that was about where their similarities ended. If you had seen him outside, without introduction, you wouldn’t have been able to guess that they were siblings in the first place.
“This is Ruon-Jian,” Jia-Li said when it became obvious that her brother wasn’t going to introduce himself. He was far too busy staring at something, his jaw dropped and his eyebrows raised, though when Jia-Li spoke, he was able to pull himself together, running his hand through his hair and then smirking.
“That’s right,” he said. “The name’s Ruon-Jian.”
“That’s what I just said,” Jia-Li said.
“What about you?” he said. You looked from side to side, wondering who he was talking to, and then you realized it was you, which meant that the thing he had been staring at was also…
“Ursa,” you said. “I’m Ursa.”
You weren’t sure how you felt about the attention. Maybe you liked it, or maybe you didn’t. It was strange and fluttering and unfamiliar in the pit of your stomach, and behind your back, you wrung your hands nervously.
“Ursa,” he said. “Great name. It’s as pretty as you are.”
“Um, I guess if I knew who my parents were, I’d pass along the compliment,” you said.
“Wicked,” he said. “So, what are you doing on Ember Island?”
“She’s my friend, idiot. My roommate from the academy,” Jia-Li said.
“Shh, Jia-Li, I’m trying to get to know her better! Stop talking and interrupting her,” Ruon-Jian said. You exchanged bewildered looks with Jia-Li’s mother, while at your side, Jia-Li fumed, the air shimmering from the heat she gave off as a Firebender.
“She’s right,” you said. “I’m her roommate back at school. She’s one of my greatest friends.”
“Sick,” he said.
“I don’t think I am,” you said, puzzled.
“It’s slang,” Jia-Li said.
“I understand,” you said, although you didn’t, not fully. This way of speaking was entirely foreign to you, but you figured that if you had Jia-Li with you to translate, you’d probably be alright.
“Who’s your family, Ursa?” Ruon-Jian said.
“I don’t have one,” you said.
“Word?” he said.
“He’s asking if that’s the truth,” Jia-Li whispered. “It’s like saying ‘really?’”
“It is the truth,” you said. “I have no memories. I am the girl that the royal family sponsored to study at the academy after I was rescued from the Earth Kingdom.”
“No way!” Ruon-Jian said. “That’s so cool!”
“Not really,” Jia-Li said. “She doesn’t remember anything. Including her family. Idiot.”
“If I could forget you, I’d do so in a heartbeat,” Ruon-Jian said.
“Well, I’d do the same!” Jia-Li snapped. You cleared your throat.
“I’m just grateful to Prince Zuko for saving me and ensuring my future,” you said. “He, and the rest of the royal family, are likely the reason I’m still alive and standing before you today.”
“Word,” Ruon-Jian said.
“I am not lying this time, either,” you affirmed.
“No, that was more of an expression of agreement,” Jia-Li said.
“I am a little confused,” you said. “But I shall trust you on this one, Jia-Li.”
“Do you have plans for the week?” Ruon-Jian said.
“Jia-Li is going to teach me to swim,” you said, beaming at Jia-Li, who gave you a high-five in return. “Beyond that, no, not really.”
“We were going to ask you if you could teach her to ride the flying dolphin fish,” Jia-Li said. “I know you’d never teach me, but—”
“Definitely!” Ruon-Jian said, cutting Jia-Li off. “I’ll teach you anything you want, Ursa.”
Heat rushed into your face, and you bit your lower lip, shifting from foot to foot nervously. Glancing at Jia-Li, who shrugged, you trained your attention on the ground instead of looking at Ruon-Jian when you responded.
“I think that that would be fun,” you said.
“We’ll get started tomorrow,” he said.
“Ruon-Jian, usually I’m joking when I say it, but you really are an idiot! How can you teach her to ride flying dolphin fish if she doesn’t even know how to swim?” Jia-Li said.
“The day after tomorrow, then!” Ruon-Jian declared. “See you around, Ursa!”
With that, he bounded back upstairs, taking the steps two at a time, leaving you, Jia-Li, and her mother standing in the foyer, somehow even more confused than before.
The next day was somehow sunnier and brighter than the previous, which was a relief, as it was the day you were supposed to learn to swim. At present, you were wearing one of Jia-Li’s sets of swimming clothes, your towel spread out on the sand as you looked at the ocean with furrowed brows.
“You ready?” Jia-Li said.
“I think so,” you said.
“Let’s go!” she said. Without waiting for you, she charged into the water, flopping onto her stomach once it was deep enough for her to do so. Not even taking a second to think, you sprinted in after her, and when the water rose to the level of your thighs, you didn’t second-guess yourself. Using your legs to push off, you dove into the water, jetting through it, forcing your eyes open and laughing soundlessly as you wove amongst the flowing bubbles and colorful fish that decorated the ocean.
It was many seconds later that you pushed your way to the surface, taking a deep breath, your legs churning the water so that you stayed afloat. Some ways away, Jia-Li had done the same, though she was busily scanning the shore for where you might be.
“Jia-Li!” you called out. “Over here!”
“Ursa!” she said, clapping her hands in delight. “I guess you do know how to swim!”
“I guess so!” you said, overcome with a rush of euphoria at the weightless feeling the water afforded you. Jia-Li paddled over to where you were treading, doing the same beside you so that you two could talk.
“That means you can learn to ride the flying dolphin fish sooner rather than later,” she said slyly. You lowered your eyes.
“Maybe,” you said.
“I knew it!” she squealed. “You have a crush on my brother!”
“No!” you said, far too quickly to sound convincing. “I mean. No.”
“You do!” Jia-Li said. “I can’t understand why you’d ever have a crush on him, but I guess there’s really someone out there for everyone.”
“I don’t even know him,” you said. “Sure, he’s cool and all, but I don’t know the first thing about who he is as a person. How can I say for certain that I have a crush or anything?”
“That’s why you have to get to know him,” Jia-Li said, poking you in the forehead. “Right?”
“True,” you said. “Then I can tell you for certain how I feel. What about you, though?”
“What about me?” she said innocently.
“When will I get to meet this mysterious crush of yours? You can hardly expect to pursue him if you never even go to see him!” you said. She splashed you with water.
“I’m not about to just go visit his house for no reason! It would be weird,” she said.
“Maybe a little bit,” you said. “But there has to be a way for you to accidentally run into him! And when I say accidentally, of course it won’t be an accident at all, but it’ll appear to be one.”
“Just forget about it,” Jia-Li said. “It’s not a big deal. If it’s meant to be, something will come up.”
“If that’s what you want,” you said. “But you have to promise me that if something comes up, as you say it will, you’ll really try your hardest.”
“Okay,” Jia-Li said in determination. “If there is some opportunity for me to talk to him, I’ll do it.”
“That’s the way!” you said. “Now, let’s race. I want to see how fast I am, too.”
“First one to that bit of driftwood wins?” Jia-Li said, pointing at a smoothed-over log floating in the distance.
“You’re on,” you said. “Three, two — hey, I didn’t say go yet! Jia-Li!”
You could not remember ever having as much fun as you did during that time on Ember Island. You and Jia-Li spent hours lazing around on the beach or swimming in the water, eating whatever her family’s chef prepared for you, drinking fruit juice that was sometimes sweet, sometimes sour, oftentimes both. At night, you would stay up until the moon was high in the sky, giggling and exchanging secrets and stories, making fun of your classmates and the boys in the Royal Academy for Boys.
“You know, one of them has a shrine dedicated to Kaho,” Jia-Li told you one night. You howled with laughter.
“No!” you said.
“Yes, he really does! He found a portrait of her and leaves money and food in front of it every week,” she said.
“You’re making that up,” you said.
“Nope, I found out during one of the sporting matches,” she said. “I was a little disgusted, but now that I see the humor in it, I confess I’m entirely amused by the entire thing.”
You would sleep late into the day, sometimes missing the morning entirely and only waking up for the afternoons. Jia-Li’s mother never scolded you two for it, saying that she was happy you were catching up on your rest, since dark circles were not comely on a woman or something along those lines.
Sometimes, Ruon-Jian would spend a few minutes with you both, but for the most part, he was off with Chan, his best friend and Kaho’s older brother. When he was with you, he was usually sitting at your side, making fun of his sister and complimenting you all at once. And even though you barely knew him, you had to admit that it was nice to have someone paying such close attention to you for once, treating you as if you were worthy of his time and entirely normal, the way he was, instead of tiptoeing around you and your lost memories.
“You ready, Ursa?” Ruon-Jian said, plopping down on the bench beside you as you and Jia-Li ate breakfast — or was it lunch, at this point?
“For what, Ruon-Jian?” you said, batting your eyelashes at him. From across the table, Jia-Li pretended to gag.
He elbowed you in the side. “To learn to ride flying dolphin fish, of course!”
“Yes!” you said, shooting to your feet. “I thought you’d forgotten!”
“How could I forget about you?” he said. “The currents just haven’t been right for a beginner recently. You should’ve seen how badly Chan wiped out the other day!”
You glanced at Jia-Li. She mimed falling over, and you gave her a discreet thumbs up.
“You didn’t fall, though, did you?” you said. Ruon-Jian beamed and flexed his arms.
“’Course not. I’m way better than Chan,” he bragged.
“Very impressive. Then there must be no one in the Fire Nation more equipped to teach me,” you said.
“Not a single person,” he agreed.
“I can’t bear to watch any more of this,” Jia-Li muttered to no one in particular. “You guys have fun. I’m going to collect our clothes so that they can get washed, Ursa.”
She left without another word, though as she walked away, you thought you caught her saying something about how you could do better. Ignoring it, you followed after Ruon-Jian towards the beach behind his house, struggling to keep up with his brisk stride.
“There’s a pod of flying dolphin fish that visits our beach pretty regularly,” he said. “We should be able to catch a ride there.”
“Okay,” you said. “Is it safe?”
“We’ll ride the same one, so I can look after you, but on the whole, flying dolphin fish are very docile, so as long as the waves are gentle, it’s fine,” he said. “That’s why I’ve been waiting to take you out.”
“That sounds good,” you said. He whistled.
“That’s how we call them. Now, we just have to wait until they come,” he said, pulling you forward to stand beside him.
“Then what?” you said.
“It’s a surprise,” he said. “Just kidding! Then we swim out and find the friendliest one and get on.”
It took a few minutes, but eventually, in the distance, there were splashes. Ruon-Jian whooped in delight, grabbing your hand and dragging you after him before you could protest.
“They were fast today!” he said. “Let’s go before they decide to leave again!”
Ruon-Jian was a little faster than you at swimming, though you had been faster than Jia-Li. You didn’t feel insulted, though; he spent much of his time in the ocean, so it was to be expected that he was better than both you and his sister alike. The end result was that he reached the flying dolphin fish before you, and had already mounted one by the time you swam up to its side.
“How do I get on?” you said.
“You don’t,” he said, using his legs to hold onto the body of the flying dolphin fish and then bending over to pull you out of the water and set you in front of him.
“Thanks,” you said, suddenly very aware of how close he was to you, how he held onto your waist and rested his chin on your shoulder.
“Just rest your hands on its head,” he said. “Like that. Good job! I’ll do all the steering and stuff with my legs, so don’t worry about that for now. All you have to do is focus on your balance.”
“Got it,” you said.
“Then let’s get going!” he said, clicking at the flying dolphin fish, which took off with a push of its powerful tail, propelling itself through the water. Its speed was breathtaking, and as the wind rushed against your face, tears gathered in your eyes, tears of joy and freedom and also of regret. When was the last time you had felt like this? When was the last time you had been so happy? Why didn’t you endeavor to be so more often?
Suddenly, the flying dolphin fish took off into the air, and then you were soaring. Everything faded away, the rest of the world and Ruon-Jian and the flying dolphin fish and even you. It was all nothing. You were all nothing. There was only the sky and the sea and the smell of salt on the wind, blue taking over your vision and almost, for a second, reminding you of something else.
Then you were slamming back into the water, the flying dolphin fish not even slowing its pace as it went from air to ocean. The spray that hit your face from the impact was enough to wake you up from the daze, and you were reminded of where you were and who you were and what you were doing.
“That was so fun,” you said as you and Ruon-Jian re-entered the house, still dripping with saltwater despite the towels wrapped around you both.
“It’s sick, right? I knew you’d like it,” Ruon-Jian said. “Speaking of things you might like…my friend Chan is holding a party later tonight. You wanna come?”
You perked up at the name Chan, knowing he was none other than the object of Jia-Li’s affections.
“Yes, but only if Jia-Li can come, too,” you said.
“Aw, no way! Chan never leaves her alone, and I don’t want my best friend bothering my little sister. It’s so odd!” he said.
“It’ll be really lonely for me to be at a party where I don’t even know anyone,” you said with a small frown.
“That’s fair,” he said.
“And she’s my friend, so it’ll be more fun for me if she’s there,” you continued. “That’s why I’ll only go if she can, too.”
“Okay, okay,” Ruon-Jian said. “Fine. She can come, too.”
“Yay! Thank you so much!” you said, clapping. “It’s going to be so much fun.”
“Sure will be,” he said. “You should go get ready, though. There’ll be a lot of influential people there, so you should try to look your best.”
“Of course,” you said. “See you soon!”
Luckily, Jia-Li had been right in assuming that you and her would be the same size. You had been wearing her clothes for the entire vacation, and tonight was no different, as she picked out something nice for you to put on for the party.
“Ursa, I’m convinced you’re a miracle worker,” Jia-Li said, shaking her head. “Seriously! How is it that you managed to get us invited to one of Chan’s parties? They’re super selective.”
“Simple. Your brother invited me, and I told him I’d only go if you could, too. He was initially a bit reluctant, since he seemed to think Chan wouldn’t leave you alone, but he came around,” you said.
“You’re the best,” she said.
“I honestly might’ve just said no from the get go, but I heard that Chan was hosting, and I knew we had to attend. This is literally the sign you were waiting for!” you said. “What are the odds that your brother would invite me to a party hosted by the man of your dreams?”
“Pretty high, considering he thinks you’re really attractive and the so-called man of my dreams is his best friend,” Jia-Li said. “But I know what you’re saying, and I agree. Enough about that, though. The only thing left is for us to do our best to look amazing!”
Because Ruon-Jian and Chan were best friends, you arrived at the party before anyone else so that you could help Chan set up. His house was enormous, according to Ruon-Jian, and he had said it would be greatly appreciated if you all could lend a hand. With a meaningful look at Jia-Li, you had accepted.
“I made sure that Chan knew what food you like, Ursa, so that he could serve it,” Ruon-Jian said, his arm tossed around your shoulders. “I want you to have the best time!”
“Aren’t you so romantic, brother?” Jia-Li said dryly.
“Thank you, Ruon-Jian,” you said.
“Anytime,” he said with a smirk.
“Ruon-Jian!” a tall, muscular boy said as he opened the door to the mansion. “I thought you’d never get here.”
“Jia-Li took forever getting ready, dude,” Ruon-Jian said. “By the way, Chan, this is Ursa. And Ursa, this is Chan.”
“It’s a pleasure to meet you,” you said.
“Pleasure’s all mine,” Chan said. “Did you say Jia-Li? Is she here?”
“I am,” Jia-Li from where she was hiding behind you and Ruon-Jian. “Hi, Chan.”
“Jia-Li! It’s been ages since I saw you last. How have you been?” Chan said, yanking her by the arm and into the house.
“Quit flirting with my sister!” Ruon-Jian shouted, though he went ignored by both Chan and Jia-Li. You patted him on the arm.
“It’s okay,” you said. “She doesn’t seem upset about it, so you shouldn’t be, either.”
“It’s just so freaky,” he said with a shudder. “Jia-Li’s my baby sister. She shouldn’t have guys interested in her, let alone guys that have been my best friend since I could count.”
“She’s grown up now,” you said. “She can make her own decisions. You should just support her.”
“If you think that’s what’s best,” he said reluctantly. “You’re pretty mature, you know.”
“It’s funny, I feel like I’ve heard that before, though I don’t quite recall who might’ve said such a thing,” you said. “It doesn’t matter; either way, thank you.”
Jia-Li and Chan were too busy talking with each other, and Ruon-Jian was too busy fixing his hair in the mirror, so the brunt of the party set up fell to you. You didn’t mind, though, liking the act of working, and you were so efficient that everything was ready right around dusk.
“The place looks great, Ursa,” Ruon-Jian said when you rejoined him in front of the mirror.
“Your hair does, too, so you can stop fiddling with it,” you said. He pulled you in by the waist, flashing a peace sign in the mirror.
“Don’t we look so good together?” he said. “It’s like…like you were meant to stand beside me.”
“I suppose so,” you said, though you weren’t sure if you would go so far as to say all that. Still, it was nice to know that someone thought you belonged with them, so when he began to lean in, you did not move away.
Right when his lips were about to brush against yours, there was a knock on the door. He drew back in irritation.
“Who is here this early?” he said. “Whatever. Where were we again?”
The moment was ruined, though, so you pretended to be preoccupied with straightening your clothes, your head tilted downwards so that he could not even catch your eye.
“These are some really punctual party guests,” you said. “No one else is here yet.”
“Yeah, punctual’s one word for it,” Ruon-Jian said, clearly taking the hint you had given him and hopefully not being too miffed about it. “Wait, it’s that group we invited when we were on the beach earlier! Should’ve known they’d be the type.”
“On the — Ty Lee?” you said.
The first one to enter, Ty Lee turned in search of whoever had said her name. When she noticed you standing beside Ruon-Jian, one of his arms still around your waist, your posture clearly still set towards him, her jaw dropped.
“Ursa?” she said. “What are you doing here?”
“I feel like that’s a question I should be asking you,” you said as she cartwheeled over to drag you away from Ruon-Jian and into a hug so tight you temporarily stopped breathing.
“We were just hanging out on the beach when we got invited to come by Chan and Ruon-Jian!” she said. “I can’t believe you’re here, too.”
“Ruon-Jian is Jia-Li’s older brother, and he’s best friends with Chan, so I think that my presence is a little more explicable than yours,” you said. “When you say we, though, who do you mean?”
“Me, Mai, Azula, and Zuko!” Ty Lee said, pointing at each of them in turn. Mai was sitting by a painting, glaring whenever someone tried to approach her, and the girl who must’ve been the infamous Princess Azula was talking to Chan while Jia-Li stood behind her, ostensibly shoved out of the way so that the princess could have her turn talking to the host.
As for Zuko, he was still awkwardly standing by the doorframe, though when he glanced over at you, his eyes widened. At first, relief filled them, but when he noticed your proximity to Ruon-Jian, a strange sort of malcontent settled over his expression.
“Zuko!” you said as he stormed over to you. Ty Lee looked at him and then back at you before promptly dashing over to Mai’s side, the only one who didn’t get glared at for daring to go near her. “What are you—?”
“Who is he?” he said.
“The name’s Ruon-Jian, dude,” Ruon-Jian said, holding out his hand for Zuko to shake. Zuko looked at it disdainfully before scoffing and then returning his gaze to you.
“He’s Jia-Li’s older brother,” you said.
“Right,” Zuko said sardonically. “That’s why the two of you are so close.”
“I’ve been staying at his house the whole time I’ve been on Ember Island, so yeah, it’s probably a contributing factor,” you said.
“I’m gonna go get some food, Ursa. There are some freaky vibes here right now that I don’t really approve of,” Ruon-Jian said, inching away.
“Do you like him?” Zuko said. You blinked, taken aback by the direct question. In his letters, he was so kind and tactful, so you had come to associate him with that sort of language. The elegance with which he wrote, the careful concern he always showed for whatever you said — all of it had caused a fondness for him to grow in you.
“He’s just my friend’s older brother,” you said. The way he was speaking now was as if he was accusing you and you had to defend yourself or face judgment, but what crime had you even committed in the first place? “He taught me to ride flying dolphin fish and invited me to the party. That’s all.”
“Of course,” he said. “He’s so cool, with his dumb hair and clothes and flying dolphin fish, so of course you like him. No surprise there.”
“Are you angry?” you said. “Why?”
“Am I angry?” he said. “No!”
“You sound a little angry,” you said meekly. “I just wanted to make sure.”
“Why would it even matter to you?” he said.
“I don’t know?” you said. “I was only asking.”
“Don’t ask questions for no reason, especially when you don’t care about the answer in the first place,” he said.
“But that’s not the case. I did care about the answer, or else I wouldn’t have asked,” you said.
“Well, next time, just ask that boyfriend of yours,” he said.
“Ruon-Jian?” you said.
“Yes?” Ruon-Jian said, appearing out of nowhere. “Here, this is for you.”
“You have such horrible timing,” you said under your breath, accepting the plate he handed you. “Zuko, have you eaten anything yet? There’s a lot of really good food out. I’m sure you’ll like it.”
“It’s all Ursa’s favorites!” Ruon-Jian said. “I made sure of it myself.”
“Oh, yeah?” Zuko said with a sneer. “What the hell do you know about her, anyways?”
“Yo, chill, dude,” Ruon-Jian said, holding his hands in the air. “Who even are you? I probably know more than you! Her and I are really close, you see.”
It was probably the worst thing he could’ve said. Zuko’s face darkened, and then, before any of you knew it, he was grabbing Ruon-Jian by the collar and throwing him into a nearby vase. You jumped at the noise before rushing over to help Ruon-Jian stand.
“I’m fine,” Ruon-Jian said, waving you off as he staggered to his feet. “What is your problem, dude?”
“Stay away from her,” Zuko said.
“Who are you to say that?” you said. “My benefactor? That doesn’t mean you get to control my life, Zuko! Why does it matter to you who I’m hanging out with? He’s from a perfectly respectable family, so it’s not like it’ll reflect badly on you. I don’t get what the big deal is!”
“Seriously?” Zuko said. “You think I care what family he’s from? Do what you want! It doesn’t matter to me. It’s what you’ll do anyways, so why should I try to stop you?”
“What happened?” you said. “Why has your opinion of me lowered so thoroughly? What have I done to offend you so greatly? I know that you are angry, and I know it is because of me, but I cannot understand why!”
“There’s a lot of things you can’t understand,” he said.
“I heard a crash, is everyone — who broke my nana’s vase?” Chan shrieked as he came back into the main room. Ruon-Jian pointed at Zuko. “You! I’ve had enough of you, alright? Get out of my party!”
“I was just leaving,” Zuko said, though not without one last glare at all of you.
“See you around, loser!” Ruon-Jian said.
“Jia-Li’s right,” you said as Mai, Ty Lee, and Princess Azula excused themselves as well. “You really are an idiot. Do you know who that was?”
“Some jealous loser?” Ruon-Jian said. You opened your mouth to argue before deflating, knowing that there was no point.
“Just forget about it. Let’s try to enjoy ourselves for the rest of the party,” you said.
Some time later, there was a knock on the door. Chan opened it, and then his face fell.
“Hello, Chan,” a voice that could only be Princess Azula’s said. “Thanks for inviting us earlier, but I have some unfortunate news to share.”
“The party’s over,” Zuko said, and then all four of them were in the room, sending bursts of fire everywhere, kicking the tables in half, swinging from the chandeliers and slicing up the paintings.
“What is going on?” Jia-Li shouted, covering her head with her hands.
“I have no idea,” you said. “Hey, what are you guys doing?”
Chan screamed as Mai threw a set of knives into a pair of antique paintings on the walls and the chandelier came crashing to the ground under Ty Lee’s weight. Jia-Li pulled you out of the way of a stray lick of blue fire from Azula, and you buried your face in your hands.
“This was a pretty terrible party,” Ty Lee said, dropping lightly to her feet in front of you. “You could say we’re showing our appreciation as guests!”
“By destroying his house?” you said as Zuko kicked an entire pillar in half.
“Yep! Wanna join?” Ty Lee said.
“No!” you and Jia-Li said in unison.
“To each their own!” Ty Lee said before springing away.
“Well…” Jia-Li said. “It would feel nice.”
“What? Why?” you said.
“I thought Chan was confessing to me on the balcony earlier, but it turns out that even though he does like me, he wants to live a free and unburdened life, without the commitment of having a girlfriend. He told me that the best he could offer me is a long-term arrangement in which he does what he wants and then spends some time with me whenever I’m on the island,” Jia-Li said.
“That’s horrible,” you said.
“And while I was out there, he told me that Ruon-Jian invited Mai and Ty Lee because he thought they were hot and he wanted a chance with them,” she continued. “So there’s that.”
You scowled, and even though you hadn’t been betrayed, it felt as if you had been. Naturally, you held no claim on Ruon-Jian, but the entire reason you had grown close to him in the first place was because you liked being someone’s priority. If you weren’t even that, then what was the point?
“Jia-Li,” you said. “Since it’s the prince and princess in charge of the destruction, you could consider it a royal order.”
“You could,” Jia-Li said, a grin creeping onto her face.
“And as students of the Royal Fire Academy for Girls, we are duty-bound to follow all royal orders,” you said.
“That we are,” she said.
“I think that means we have to participate,” you said.
“I think you’re right, Ursa,” she said.
“Of course, it’s not because we’re angry at Ruon-Jian or Chan or anything,” you said.
“Definitely not,” she agreed. “We’re just following in the prince and princess’s example.”
“That’s exactly correct,” you said. “After all, what are we but their humble and obedient servants?”
“Nothing, indeed!” Jia-Li said brightly. “All hail the royal family!”
With that, she ignited her hands and placed them right on a portrait of Chan as a child. You cheered before taking a steak knife and using it to cut up the curtains, tossing them into the fire she had started as kindling.
“I’m glad we’re friends, Ursa,” Jia-Li said.
“Yeah, I’m glad we’re friends, too.”
Ursa,
It wasn’t anything you did. I’m sorry; I was upset about something unrelated and took it out on you. You have no need to ask for my forgiveness — if anyone should be doing that, it’s me. Please, please forgive me for being so angry. I promise that I will make it up to you the next time we meet.
Yours, Zuko
P.S. I did not think that you and Jia-Li would join in, but I can’t say that I’m disappointed.
P.P.S. Ruon-Jian is ugly and his hair is terrible. You don’t need to be friends with him, anyways.

who are you?
you’re 37.
you’re a marriage counsellor.
you’re a divorcee.
quite the irony, isn’t it?
moving on…
what were you?
monday to friday, just like in any 9-5, you, my dear, took on the role of the all-knowing marriage counsellor.
see, you were quite the talk of town; known for your great insight, marriage-saving advice, and whatever more descriptions people could come up with.
trust me, everything was going perfectly fine: you were on top of the world, and nothing could’ve knocked you down.
skip to: a rainy day, you were sat in your car, and all of a sudden there were blinding beams coming straight at you.
⭐️lights out⭐️
where were you?
you awoke in a bright white room, with the putrid scent of vomit hanging heavy in the air. any guesses yet?
*ding, ding, ding*
if you guessed a hospital, you are correct! if you didn’t – doesn’t matter, we’ll just pretend you did. good job.
long story short, a car rammed straight into yours. needles to say, the driver got away unscathed (as they tend to always do) and you, well you got off pretty well too – minus the head injury part.
where are you now?
right now, you’re stood in your humble bungalow – office set up in one of the few rooms, and well… you’re not exactly sure where to go next.
it seems like you’ve been granted the chance of a fresh start – ‘do-over’, if you will.
⭐️so, are you going to repeat the past or set out on a new path?
customise your mc: gender, name, personality, appearance – you name it.
choose one of three new career paths OR stick to the status quo.
romance one of three love interests.
rewrite your life.
and so much more!
‘the ex-spouse' [f/m] -> profile
why did you divorce?
don’t look at me, I don’t know the ins and outs of your relationship and history. don’t worry though, it seems like they’re happy to fill in all the gaps for you – the news of your accident caused them to pack their bags, fly over, and check into a nearby hotel.
pretty clingy for someone you haven’t even exchanged two words with, in the last three years… absence makes the heart grow fonder, right?
’the patient’ (but not really) [f/m] -> profile
and don’t even think about it! patients are off-limits, remember?
…even if the last time you saw them, roughly two years ago, their marriage was fine, and you parted ways amicably…. that would still be wrong, understood?
yadda yadda... they're no longer your patient, but think about the town. folks talk – you should know that better than anyone!
‘the bartender’ [f/m] -> profile
cliché, I know.. but even your highly praised self had a habit for the nightlife… mostly the wasting away at the bar, and ordering shot after shot bit. but let’s not get into that right now.
let’s just say: they’ve been a shoulder to lean on, whenever you unleashed the burdens accumulated during your working hours. honestly, marriage can be seriously depressing.

Autobots and techno organic buddy? The buddy is the daughter of Predaking but the Autobots don’t know until they run into Predaking while Buddy is with them.
In case you don’t know what a techno organic is, it’s essentially a human Cybotronion hybrid.
Its been a hot second since I've touched anything Predaking related. If this is not what you wanted, please let me know. Techno Organic Buddy is always a treat to see every now and then.
Hope you enjoy!
Autobots react to Techno Organic Buddy being the daughter of Predaking
SFW, Platonic, Familial, slight angst, Techno Organic reader
TFP
No one knows where Buddy came from.
One day Buddy just appeared on the Autobots radar and the next became a part of the Team. It was certainly a confusing time explaining to Fowler and the kids what Buddy was.
“So you’re a Cyborg?”--Miko
“Miko!”--Jack
“What? I’m just asking.”—Miko
“Yeah I guess I am kind of a cyborg.”--Buddy
“See!”—Miko
“How did you become a cyborg?”--Raf
“I…I actually don’t know? I just am.”--Buddy
“How do you not know?”--Jack
“I just don’t.”--Buddy
“Do you even remember how this happened?!”--Jack
“Jack, I don’t even remember what I ate this morning. What makes you think I’m going to remember how ‘this’ happened?”--Buddy
“…Good point…”--Jack
“Great… more paperwork…”--Fowler
She had created bonds with the Autobots and the humans. Although her creation was still a mystery to the bots, some did help her explore her Cybertronian side.
Buddy was vague about her family whenever the topic was brought up. It didn’t seem too strange to the bots at first. Not many of them would necessarily talk about friends or if they had any family. But in comparison to the rest of the kids, Buddy rarely even uttered a word to the bots about them.
“It’s getting late shouldn’t you start heading out?”--Bulkhead
“Oh, pops wont mind.”--Buddy
“He wont mind?”—Wheeljack
“Yeah.”--Buddy
“But certainly your father is worried about you.”—Ultra Magnus
“Nah. He’s fine. I’ve been gone for longer.”—Buddy
“How much is longer?”—Wheeljack
“Hmm… what day is today?”—Buddy
The kids thought that Buddy may have a hard home. Which they did raise their concerns to their respected guardians. The logic made sense. Buddy rarely talked about them and always seemed to be around the base more than the kids. Maybe it was because Buddy was a Techno Organic? It could certainly be a cause.
Miko was the one who brought this up to Buddy. After all the two were as thick as thieves, sure Buddy wouldn’t lie to her about this.
“Hey Buddy!”--Miko
“Hey Miko!”--Buddy
“I was telling Raf and Jack over here about some stories about me in Japan. All comparing there to here. You got any stories about your folks?”--Miko
“Like what?”--Buddy
“Well you rarely talk about any of them. Mind telling me the reason?”--Miko
“Well… Its really just been me and Pops. You know I don’t know much about me being, well, me. He’s the strongest guy I know and he works far.”--Buddy
“That’s why you don’t talk too much about him? Is he a deadbeat?”--Miko
“No! No he’s not a deadbeat! He’s not perfect by any means, but he tries his best. The place where we were living in wasn’t the best. He sent me to Jasper for me to live a better life until he can join me.”--Buddy
“Wow…”--Miko
“Yeah…”--Buddy
“Didn’t know we were gonna get Buddy lore dropping now. What other secrets are you hiding under your plating?”--Miko
“Boring stuff. How about we go flying above the base instead?”--Buddy
“Yeah! Race you to the elevator!”--Miko
Somewhere on base…
Bulkhead, Ultra Magnus, and Wheeljack suddenly shuddering.
“What was that?”—Ultra Magnus
“Don’t know, but I don’t like it.”--Wheeljack
“My Miko senses are tingling…”--Bulkhead
“Your what?”--Wheeljack
Miko reported back as soon as she was done with the flying. This at least gave some peace to the bots.
The bots did meet Buddy’s father.
However, it was under less pleasant circumstances.
The Wreckers, Miko, and Buddy were scouting an old energon mine when a fearsome shriek was heard from above. Predaking in all of his glory landed a few feet away from the Wreckers spreading his wings out wide.
Ultra Magnus held his hammer tightly in his servos, Wheeljack whipped out his katanas, Bulkhead had his wrecking ball, Miko in her armor held her fighting stance eagerly ready to fight the dragon.
Buddy, however, stayed hovering behind Magnus.
Before any of them could formulate a plan of attack, Buddy flew past them and headed straight for the large Predacon.
There was yelling and running, they thought Buddy was about to die.
But something much more bizarre happened.
Buddy dove in for a hug!
And Predaking was wrapping his wings around them, as if he were hugging her back, before transforming and setting the Techno Organic on his shoulder.
“What the—”--Wheeljack
“Careful Wrecker, there’s children present.”--Predaking
“Hey!”--Miko
“Pops!”--Buddy
“That’s your Pop’s?!”--Miko
“Yeah?”--Buddy
“How?”--Miko
“Buddy you’re saying this guy, the Predacon is your dad?”--Bulkhead
“The same mech who hunted down Wheeljack and I?”--Magnus
“The same guy who crushed Magnus’s servo into scrap metal?”--Wheeljack
“Sorry about that.”--Predaking
“I think some explaining is necessary Pops…”--Buddy
“Very well.”--Predaking
Predaking was Buddy’s adopted father.
Predaking, while still in root mode, had met Buddy one day as she was transported to the Nemesis via groundbridge. Starscream was supposed to give her to Shockwave immediately, but for some reason, he had simply tossed Buddy at Predaking without thinking twice.
Predaking had pity on the small thing and took her under his wing.
Literally.
After that Buddy and Predaking were never far from each other. Starscream had once tried to teach him a lesson by going after her. The Second in Command was covered helm to toe with scratches and had one less arm that day.
After his transformation, Predaking realized that the Nemesis wasn’t the best place for Buddy right now, especially when he started questioning his loyalties. He sent Buddy away to the small human town below and told her to stay out of the con’s radar.
Well, she stayed off the cons radar, not so much the bots.
Now for the bots…
Everyone is confused. Especially when the story was retold to the others.
But comparing stories… it makes sense.
Buddy’s loyalties were not questioned. She had plenty of times to expose them to the Cons or have Predaking attack them, yet that didn’t happen. Buddy is loyal to the bots while Prdaking isn’t, but he isn’t loyal to the cons either.
Predaking is fine with Buddy being with the bots. He trusts them more than the Cons to keep her safe.
As long as Buddy is okay, its fine.

if you are a famous pizza joint and over the years you cook me several pizzas I fall in love with, and then over time you suddenly rebrand to only make hamburgers, I like hamburgers on occasion, but it’s weird if you still call it a pizza
I didn’t get used to coming to your store for hamburgers. in fact your previous owners established a really good reputation for making pizza and I don’t necessarily believe you can make good hamburgers cause you don’t have the best track record with rebranding to other things. you tried to make conveyor belt sushi that one time and it sent some people to the hospital so I get very nervous when you start experimenting.
then your chefs take to social media and start saying “those old critically acclaimed pizzas of ours that you loved so much always had some bad flavors, so in our new hamburgers, we actually tried hard to make the tomatoes taste good. these hamburgers are the Best We’ve Ever Done, You Should Preorder Our Hamburgers”
you are now boasting about how delicious your patties are. now I tried your sliders one time a few years ago out of boredom and they were fine, it wasn’t really for me, but whatever. and now I notice how the first people in line for your hamburgers today are talking about how they can’t wait to rip off the buns and all the other toppings and lick their patty’s bald head till it says “oooh I never should've left you, vhenan, oooh.” i’m mostly a vegetarian these days anyway. please stop talking about patties. I don’t fucking care you brought over the same plates and wallpaper and fishtank when you redesigned your restaurant. for $60 I want to eat a good pizza. even a pizza-flavored hamburger. is there anything on this menu that will suit me?
then I go online to see if anyone else feels the same nervousness. and I meet several other people who say yeah, this is not pizza, the only good pizza they’ve ever made was back when they made only margherita; some others who say yeah it’s weird, but I like hamburgers so it’s whatever; several other critics are just bigots who stand outside the store lobbing feces at the windows because this store also serves rainbow-colored pizza-hamburgers; and several others who say removing the cheese from the pizza-hamburger isn’t actually that big a deal, and neither is removing the tomatoes, or the bread, or the sauce, because enjoying pizza is about the Experience and the Ambiance, so they’re going to love this hamburger anyway because come on, it’s the pizza joint! the classic pizza joint! don’t you miss eating their classic pizzas?? now I have never straight-up told anyone to not buy the hamburgers, and yet when I or anyone else mentions missing when this place served pizza, I get alluded to as a pizza tourist with intentions on par with the aforementioned poo-slingers.
if I then see reviews have come out with video footage they even the tomatoes, which are a commonly agreed element in both pizza and hamburgers, are no longer is up to the quality of any acceptable hamburger joint much less this pizzeria in its heyday, it’s gonna ruin my appetite for your hamburgers entirely, much less anything else that comes out of that kitchen. that was the ONE connective tissue between pizza and hamburgers that I cared about; the one thing that everyone looks forward to from you, specifically, even. and if some folks say “hey, even if this is a hamburger joint, it’s a bad sign that these tomatoes look like they’ve been dug out of the garbage and cut by a nine-year-old, and I worry because I don’t want to see you on the internet later complaining about food poisoning, god forbid, or worse, telling people that mild food poisoning is part of the experience,” I think it’s baffling that people shoot back with “why don’t you buy the hamburger before judging if it has food poisoning for yourself?” as if you and I don't deserve better for sixty goddamn dollars than to have to guess whether a hamburger with a dead fly in it is going to ruin our weekend.
look, even if I weren’t very bitter about my favorite pizza joint changing, I think that people who like hamburgers also deserve a better foodie experience for their time and money, no matter what it is, and we are lying to ourselves if we say all the basic ingredients of pizza never really mattered and everything was just window dressing for like, all those decorative background plates and wallpaper that one guy designed 20 years ago. that one guy is still arguing with fans of his old pizzeria on twitter ten years after he even left the place, so I don’t really care what he thinks.
this restaurant’s menu items, whether pizza or hamburger, costs $60 and take several dozens of hours to sit at your restaurant and enjoy. now I have signed up for your dinner experience in the past despite my wariness and been proven wrong, because enjoying your enormous, delicious pizza for hours has been a highlight of my food experiences since I even started calling myself an #eater. even if I dislike how you’ve used some anchovies or chicken bbq toppings in the past, I actually enjoyed when you changed my other favorite menu item into tacos earlier, even if the taco’s faces looked kinda funny.
and I’m sure your staff worked very hard on these hamburgers under extreme conditions; maybe you had Jeremy Allen White screaming HANDS HAIRSTYLES in your ear back there for 10+ years, and that sucks. while I have not forgotten that you axed several of your line cooks (who designed the recipes you’re now serving) just before the finish line, I am sympathetic that this is a make-or-break moment for your restaurant. you’ve borrowed too much money from Uncle Jimmy and if this doesn’t work, we might not see you stay open for long. I do not want that to happen.
but i do not owe this place my patronage just because they still call themselves a pizza joint. they changed too many menu items. I am no longer their ideal clientele. I don’t have all the time and money in the world to waste on hamburgers I know will make me unhappy and I’m tired of being alluded to as a “tourist” for sharing my concerns about the future of one of my favorite restaurants.
so with a very heavy heart, I realized that I’ve kind of... outgrown this pizza-hamburger joint. I don’t care if the hamburger patty gets redeemed anymore. just across the street, supergiant’s gyro truck is putting out ten times the quality that I see from your hamburgers while also providing excellent weekly menu changes based on customer feedback, and metaphor refantazio’s pizzeria is just standing there as a quiet restaurant of the year contender, and oh hey, is lego horizon adventures opening next month? and literally any of those are looking like a wonderful palate cleanser to all of... this.
#dav#da negativity#bioware stuff#i recognize that nobody cares and this is the most american thing ever to compare it to pizza and hamburgers lol#and comparing it to food poisoning is over dramatic#but let’s be honest gaming is fundamentally unserious as a hobby and I couldn’t think of a better metaphor#veilguard critical#datv critical

Ride Home
WRITTEN by my amazing friend @glfry please check out her artblog!! Ship: Four x OC (Haji) -------------------------------------------------------
The wagon was full, it was always at this time; were the tangerine rays of the afternoon sun sort of signal for folks to get up and run to the nearest subway? The dazed octoling voiced this theory to Four, who snorted before realizing she wasn’t joking - she explained this just ‘around the time people get off’. . What people would get off of exactly, Haji wasn’t too sure, her logic told her to continue asking, her fried mind and aching feet told her to just get to the damn train. Just a test trial of an agent mission was exhausting. When they got to the station, they had to make a decision whether to sprint up the stairs to catch the caravan that had just set into the station, or to just wait because it’s not worth the trouble. Actually it was Fours decision because she made use of the energy in her legs (that she still managed to retain after hours of gruelling work? Somehow?) and bolted up the stairs. Haji considered yelling at her to stop, she considered just staying at the bottom and later rendezvous with Four. Yet feeling the burning in her throat, and the idea of having to go home alone with her feet barely able to hold her, she took her chances as she sighed, before gathering her remaining energy left within her and running after the inkling.
And now they were stuck in the stuffy wagon, Four barely managing to stretch her arm far enough to hang onto one of the few remaining strap handles. Haji, being left no real place to grab onto (or to even really stand), grasped onto the shorter, gripping her arm tightly, not trusting her own footing. It was an action that made Four flinch for a brief moment, the contact wasn’t expected, but she definitely didn’t oppose it.
Maybe grabbing onto Four wasn’t the best idea, considering it sent both of them stumbling multiple times, flying into the other passengers, who had started shooting them dirty glances, which showed no signs of seizing no matter how many apologies were ushered. “How much longer until I can sit, you think?” A whisper that Haji didn’t even attempt to hide the desperation of. Her legs ached, her head ached, her back ached, it all hurt and she didn’t know how much longer she could possibly stand, at some point she considered sitting down on the floor. Fours neutral expression grew into a subtle frown, maybe it’d be best to not take her on a test mission next time.
“Not sure — the next plaza isn’t until a couple more stations.” She whispered back, only to be met by a subtle, sad, groan. “You there,” a voice spoke up, Four met the gaze of the source, an older gentleman, an octoling, a strand going over a good chunk of his face, his voice and visage were kind. “Your little lady looks really tired.” Four nodded and hummed in response. “Long day?” “Yeah, real long.” He smiled a little, he looked towards Haji, who still hadn’t noticed him (or at the very least, not looked towards him yet). “I get off in the next couple stops, do you want to let her sit here?” The inkling nodded and hushed out a thanks through a grin. She whispered to the other, getting her attention to move and steer her towards the now open seat. Four stood in front of her and leaned over to grip the fabric behind the dazed girl. “Wait, who even stood up?” Haji asked, holding her forehead. The girl in yellow was about to point at the kind stranger, alas, he had already disappeared into the crowd (somehow?). Fourshrugged “Just some real gentle guy I guess.”
With every station they passed, the subway became less and less breathable, when finally, they passed a plaza, and almost their entire wagon spilled out. The sudden relief of not having to strain herself to even stand let a sigh escape Fours lungs, one she hadn’t realized she was even holding. Now, with each station, it became emptier and emptier. Until finally, it was just them.
Haji leaned on the Inklings shoulder, she could’ve easily leaned back on the fabric of her seat, but that didn’t have the same warmth as the other. Nor did it have the same musk of sweat, which wasn’t a positive on its end actually. “How many mooreee.” Haji slurredout. “Uhhh, I dunno.” Four looked up and squinted at the timetable, “A little more than 12 I think? I counted real quick so, y'know, give or take.” Haji yawned. “Good, that means I got time.”
Before Four could ask what she meant, the Octoling buried herself a little more into the Inklings neck, her hand intertwining with hers. In any other situation, Haji would’ve been flustered just thinking about doing something as bold as this, she would’ve been a mess and stumbled over her words just doing one of those actions, rationalizing it in her head and having to justify it out loud with light hearted mockery and banter to Four.
Yet in her tired and exhausted gaze she let her instincts and feelings take charge over any possible incentive to hold back. The inkling watched as the light bathed the other’s face in an amber hue, her soft subtle breathing was a motion Four subconsciously started following. She hoped they could stay like this for a while, forever maybe (is that what you hope for with a friend?). With hesitancy, she moved a hand to move the tentacle out of Hajis face, careful not to wake her. The girls features were a lot softer close up, her unnaturally sharp ears for an Octoling and pointed tentacles definitely would give the impression the rest of her was just as pointy, alas it was not. Her button nose and rounded chin felt unfitting compared to her rough and bold façade she put on during her shows, some who don’t know her as well might’ve said that it didn’t match with her rough-around-the- edges kinda personality. But behind that, there was a deeply vulnerable person. Her heart, her emotions, everything else was as delicate as the rays that tickled her skin. Four squeaked as something moved around her arm, she thought it was some kind of bug at first, but as she shot her appendage a glance she couldn’t help but let out a sigh. Haji seemingly had more control over her tentacles than Four did (either an octoling thing or a ‘Haji just being weird' thing), as it had wrapped around her, seizing her arm tightly. She didn’t want to let go as much as Four did. It charmed her. A ding followed by soft chime came on over the intercom, announcing the next station - their stop! The inkling softly ruffled the others head, it was time to go, she murmured as Haji barely had her eyes open. The octoling groaned, only leaning into her friend further, she didn’t wanna get up.
Four shook her a little. “Hatch we have to get up, or stop is coming up.” “Mm… don’t careee” The inkling sighed, “Then I’ll have to leave you here.” “Nooooo,” she whined like a child, wrapping an arm around her, “you stay here…” The sigh evolved into a groan, the next stop was coming up worryingly quick, and she wouldn’t wait for the next train just to go back one station.
“Fine, we'll do this the hard way,” she announced, positioning her back in front of Haji and picking her up as if she were a backpack. The Octoling let out a peep, yet had no energy left to object, succumbing to her fate easily enough and wrapping her arms loosely around the others neck. Four had actually bet on Haji getting flustered and admitting defeat or whatever but she supposed this worked too. The way home was filled with a lot of bemused stares. Four didn’t care, Haji didn’t care, this felt good

Absolutely obsessed with your steddie dad’s verse!!! Everything about it is just so good, thanks for sharing!
I love Moe, Robbie and Hazel, and I can’t get this idea out of my head that probably doesn’t fit the vision of this verse at ALL but hear me out. What if one day all the upside down stuff became public knowledge? Somehow documents get leaked, someone talks, idk. And it’s suddenly all over the news. Would be so interesting to see how Steve and Eddie would react to this and how they’d talk to their kids (who just found out about their parents saving the world from the news) about it 👀
So here’s the thing:
Realistically, I don’t think the story would ever get fully leaked, for two reasons (probably more, actually, but two primary reasons).
It makes the U.S. government look terrible, and they do a good enough job of that publically to afford any more hits to their rep so they keep that shit on lock
Nobody would believe it. Maybe there are whispers about the truth of what happened to Hawkins, Indiana in the 80s, but the second the words “monsters” and “superpowers” get thrown in there, nobody buys it. That’s why the cover stories work.
What I absolutely think would happen is ✨conspiracy theories✨
Like, come 2014 there’s a rising interest in true crime and conspiracy theories and some enthusiasts stumble upon the story. A few devoted folks pull a Murray and start building a timeline and they quickly realize that there are some pretty serious holes in the narrative. It kind of takes off from there.
Robbie is Eddie’s daughter through and through, so she’s totally into that kind of stuff. Steve and Eddie have always been relatively upfront about what happened to them in Hawkins (relatively, in that they have the “here’s what you’ll find if you google your dads” conversation with an extensive Q+A, but to avoid dumping trauma on their kids they stay light on the details), so she’s more intrigued than surprised when not only is she suggested a YouTube video about her dads’ hometown, but the video also mentions both of them by name.
Here’s the problem – like most conspiracy theories, it's true that some pretty damning evidence has been uncovered that the government probably didn’t want circulating. However the story is still missing key details in a way that makes the resounding conclusion this close to the truth, but not quite there.
Hence, this conversation Robbie has with her dads after she watches the video:
“So is it true that Uncle Will was abducted by aliens?”
Steve’s eyebrows fly up.
“Are people saying it’s aliens? It wasn’t aliens.”
“Was he though?”
“Uh…kind of. I guess.”
“Is it true the government put a fake body in the lake and pretended it was him and then when Will came back they had to pretend it was another kid?”
“Yep.”
“That’s fucked up. Is it true that Russia used a mall in Hawkins to build a secret lab?” Robbie asks.
“Yes.”
“Is it true they were doing research on the aliens and then one of them escaped and that’s why the mall got destroyed.”
“Not even close.”
“How did the mall get destroyed then?”
“Bunch of people got possessed by a shadow monster and he made them eat chemicals until they exploded and reformed as this giant mass thing that cornered us in the mall. We attacked it with fireworks. I wasn’t there for most of that, though. Just the end.”
“Whatever,” Robbie rolls her eyes, fully convinced that her dad is bullshitting her, “Is it true the Hawkins earthquakes were actually the aliens invading.”
“No – yes…kind of? Not earthquakes. Not aliens.”
“I mean…technically they kind of were aliens ,” Eddie jumps in, “Technically anything from a land foreign to yours is an alien.”
“They weren’t aliens,” Steve insists, “They were monsters. They were big and gray and their faces opened up and they had all these rows of teeth like sharks.”
“Sounds like an alien to me,” Robbie replies.
“Monsters.”
“Is it true Dad was attacked by them and he almost died and you saved him, Pop?”
“Yes, indeed,” Eddie says proudly before Steve can respond, “He’s quite the hero, don’t you think?”
“In space?”
“Nope. In an evil alternate dimension, and he dragged me all the way out through the portal and everything.”
Robbie rolls her eyes again, “Nevermind, you guys are useless. You’d think you weren’t even there.”
Steve sighs, “God, I wish that were true.”
In terms of how Steve and Eddie respond to the story gaining some attention from the general public, they do family viewings of the conspiracy videos made about the situation and make fun of the incorrect narratives. Their daughters fully do not grasp that their dads are telling the truth because, again, the truth does not seem real.
#*john mulaney voice* eh none of us really know our fathers#i could say so much more about this but i didn’t want this post to get bogged down sooo#lmk if you want more I guess#fun fact: my *redacted relative* worked on the Isabella Stewart Gardener robbery case#which i didn’t know until i watched the buzzfeed unsolved video about it and saw a picture of them#so in other words…this could totally play out like this#steddie#liv’s steddie dads verse#steddie dads#steve harrington#eddie munson

For Death Or Glory : Chapter Five
Jake Kiszka x Charlotte (fem OC)
Warnings: Anxious Themes (includes a Comforting scene), Mild Meltdown (I don't want to say a panic attack because it isn't really) Mentions of Grieving, the most brief mention of funerals, silly&friendly bullying, drinking/alcohol (we know the drill), Fluff oh the fluff, & Jake yearns a little more (shocking).
Word Count: 4.6k
Summary: After caving and finally asking for help, Jake doesn't know what to do with himself until she shows up. Which takes a big ol' turn for ... well, I guess we will find out, won't we? 🤭
Author's Note: If we're being completely honest, this was the first chapter I wrote, of this story. I knew exactly how I wanted this day to go and I couldn't stop myself when I thought of the idea. It's what fueled the bulk of the storyline and I really hope you guys love it as deeply as I do. 🥹
Clocks Go Forward - James Bay "Stay warm, close your eyes, let time fly, Stay close, stay right here, nothing to fear."
I slide my phone back into my pocket. Staring at it isn’t going to make her reply, Jake. I’ve been at the bar trying to figure out this paperwork for a while, and well, I’m lost. My hands keep finding their way to the back of my head as I read through these documents; I need to focus on something else.
“Hey, how are you?” I say in passing some day-time regulars of ours. I collect any empty cans or glasses that I can, anything to keep me busy at this rate.
I wander behind the bar, setting all the glasses in the dirty bin.
“Jake.”
I look over to Josh, who’s wiping out a glass.
“Why don’t you just go get some lunch or something? You’re stressing me out being here.”
“Is it really that bad?” I ask, running my hand through my hair.
A laugh erupting from him says enough.
“Okay, alright, I’ll leave you alone,” I tell him, “Just let me know if you need anything.”
Reluctantly sitting back down at the desk in my office, I find myself with my head in my hands for a moment. You’re going to be okay. You’re new at this, and it’s okay to mess up. She’s giving you time to take care of everything.
After a deep breath or two, I opened my laptop and pulled up my email. I decided that maybe spending some time doing mindless admin work would help distract me from the inevitable problem.
I’m flying through these emails by humming along to whatever customers have chosen for the jukebox. Looking at the time in the top corner, 2:30 pm.
She still hasn’t replied. Maybe she’s working with someone else right now; just be patient.
I walk back into the bar, seeing a handful more people come in. I wave slightly to the regulars who like to camp out in the corner. They enjoy sneaking away from work for a few hours; “Lunch beers” is apparently what they call it. I laughed the first time they told me about it, but as they continued the tradition, I understood it more and more.
Looking to the corner of the bar, I see Quinn. I can’t help but watch the two of them for a minute with a grin plastered on my face. Seeing my brother so happy makes my heart swell daily, and Quinn is perfect for him; I can’t deny it. They just know how to handle him and reign him in when he’s being a bit too much. Which is more often than not.
“Do you two want to go grab lunch?” I ask, slinking my arm around Josh’s shoulders, “I think I can handle the rowdy folk we have here.” I shoot a wink at the few customers sitting next to Quinn.
His eyes light up, “You don’t have to ask me twice. Let’s go, bug!”
I don’t think he could have left any quicker if he tried. Immediately, hand in hand with Quinn, and practically pranced out of the bar.
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯
“And a squirrel fell down my chimney into my fireplace!”
I nod with a quiet “mhm,” glancing at my phone hidden under the bar. 3:15 pm. I'm trying to look interested in this story I’ve heard a few times. The older gentleman talking to me forgets that he’s told me the majority of the tales he has in his arsenal. But I don’t want to cut him off; he seems lonely, and the least I can do is humor him.
Hearing the door chime, followed by Josh making his entrance.
“Welcome back,” I chuckle as he walks swiftly towards the bar.
“I need to use the lavatory, and then I will be ready to rock ‘n roll or whatever kids say nowadays,” Josh mutters.
You would think he’s nine hundred years old with how he talks sometimes, but it always keeps me on my toes. Watching as he disappears around the corner, I grab the older man’s glass and place it in the dirty bin.
The door chime goes off again, causing my head to whip around.
Oh, she’s here..?
As Charlotte slowly walks to the bar, I go to meet her at the opposite corner. I pull my phone out; she never replied?
“I didn’t think I would see you today,” I start as she approaches. Leaning down to grab everything I had been looking at, I stowed away when I couldn’t focus anymore.
“I have been reading through all of these, and I think you’re gonna need to explain these to me like I’m five–” I stop. I hadn’t looked at her face the entire time, and her eyes were pink and looked a bit swollen. She’s not making eye contact at all, which seems odd compared to the other afternoon, where I thought if she held my gaze any longer, I would explode. Was she crying? I questioned myself. I hope I didn’t cause this. Was she supposed to be off today? Oh my god, what if I’m the only reason she’s working?
Finally pulling myself out of my head, “Are you okay?”
She takes a shallow breath before looking up at me, and I can see that her eyes are fighting the urge to let the tears fall.
“Um,” she swallows, looking back down, “Yeah, I’m fine.” Her raspy voice is so quiet I can barely hear it. Her lip quivers as she stands there, and I can see the way her breathing is picking up. Oh no, oh no, oh no.
I hear the door to the bathroom open. Turning around, I shoot Josh a look. He makes eye contact with me as I bounce my eyes to Charlotte and back to him. I watch as he glances at her quickly, his eyes widening as if to say, ‘Do what you need to.’
I come out from behind the bar, grabbing her bag from the barstool it sat on.
“Come with me,” I whisper to her; she just nods in response.
I gently place my hand on her back, guiding her down the hall to my office. Just long enough to round the corner into the small room, she lets out the tiniest whimper I’ve ever heard. I toss her bag onto the chair, facing her as she finally breaks down. Her hands fly up to hide her face as she lets out the most heartbreaking sound. One sob was enough for me; I pushed the door closed behind her and pulled her into me.
“Oh, honey,” I let slip out, holding her small frame tight against me as she cried. I listen to her sobs against my chest as I run my hand down the back of her head, holding her close. I close my eyes to help focus my breathing; being in these situations never gets easier and I’ll never understand how I always end up in them.
“Take a breath for me,” I said quietly, trying to stay calm for her. I can feel her take a deep breath and shakily release it. Her arms drop from her face, finding their way around my back. Grabbing at my shirt gently, like she’s afraid I'll let her go.
“I’m right here. Take your time,” I whisper, pressing my lips gently to the top of her head, “You’re okay.”
We spend a few minutes like this. I keep rubbing slow circles on her back, resting my face against the top of her head to keep her tucked in.
“Do you want to talk about it?” I ask. I feel her shake her head ‘no’ before turning her face and leaning back against me, reaching up to push the hair out of her face. She lets out another shaky breath.
“I‘m so sorry,” she mumbles into me.
“Don’t apologize for having emotions.”
I lean back to look at her, her breathing starts to feel more normal.
She looks tired.
I don’t know what comes over me when I reach up, holding either side of her face and gently wiping the tear stains on her cheeks away.
Our eyes finally met; she really was beautiful— crying or not.
Her gaze doesn’t falter, her green eyes locked on me. She almost makes me nervous, not in a mean or intimidating way, but like I shouldn’t be allowed to look at someone who looks like her.
“Do you want to um-” I hesitate, “go get something to eat? While we talk about things. Not like a d-”
Despite her watery eyes, she huffs out a laugh.
“Stop,” she says, “I know what you mean. Yes, let’s do that.”
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯
We walked into the restaurant, and considering it’s only 4 p.m., it’s not very busy. I let her pick where we sit, following behind as she chose. She had a soft smile on her face as she claimed the booth seat like she just won a prize.
“Hi, can I please have a Boulevardier? ” Charlotte politely orders, my eyebrows raised at her choice.
“Actually, I’ll take the same thing,” I tell them, “Thank you.”
Charlotte pulled out the paperwork, flipping through it to see what I had left. Watching her green eyes flit across them, setting aside anything that needs more attention. The way that she chews the inside of her lip while she’s reading is endearing.
“Okay, so you haven’t missed too many things.” She tells me.
“Oh good,” I start picking at my lip, “I’m sorry, I just didn’t realize how much was involved.”
“That’s alright, Jacob. It’s a lot, and nobody generally explains this part of business to you.” Normally, I would cringe at my full name being used, but I just want her to keep saying it.
She pulled out one of the papers and turned it to face me. She pointed at the part I hadn’t filled out.
“So essentially, this means–” She begins explaining. Her eye contact is intense while she talks, which makes it incredibly hard to focus. I feel myself slowly smiling as she’s telling me. I glance at her mouth quickly, making it even more challenging to pay attention.
“What?”
Damnit. I raised my eyebrows with a small ‘mmm’.
“You looked like you wanted to say something?” She questions.
“Oh, I’m sorry– no, I was just listening.” There are a lot of things I could say.
“Oh– Well, anyway,” she shakes her head a little before continuing to explain.
I really wish that I could tell you what she’s explained to me at this point, but to be completely honest, I have no clue. I’ve been far too distracted by the freckles on her nose and the way her eyes twinkle under these lights. I can’t get over the green of her eyes, with subtle gold flecks in them. Her hair is perfectly curled, and how the color of it stands out against her blazer. She is unreal.
“Are you planning on doing that?” She asks, immediately pulling me out of my thoughts.
“Yeah, absolutely.”
“Great, Melody will really benefit from that,” she tells me. Benefit from what exactly?
“Do you need me to send you the information on that?” she quickly asks, grateful I’ll at least have context on what I’m agreeing to.
“Please, if you could,” I say quietly as I rub my eyes.
Our server stopped our conversation to take our order, giving me a second to try and refocus myself. She is trying to help you and isn’t being an asshole about it. The least you can do is pay attention to what she’s actually saying. Get it together.
“Okay anyway,” she starts again, “I think that’s everything?” She sifts through the papers.
“Amazing,” I breathe out. “I’m sorry I made you come out here to help.” I sit back in my chair, my hands falling into my lap, where I quietly dig at the side of my thumb.
“No, it’s okay, really,” she says, not making eye contact this time. “I was already in Portland, so it worked out.”
Her eyebrows pulled together as she told me, but I knew I shouldn’t ask. If she wanted to tell me what was wrong, she would. I’m not going to make her cry again.
“Well, I’m glad I caught you at the right time then,” I say, offering a small smile. Her face softens a bit, and she leans forward, propping herself up.
“So, how long ago did you buy the bar if it’s not even a year old?”
“About two years ago, actually,” I tell her, “We took our time renovating it to feel right.”
“We?”
“All the boys helped me, but Josh really did the most with making it look the way it does.” I usually have no issue talking about the bar, but her being even vaguely interested has my brain stalling.
“I love that. He did a good job curating,” she says, “Was the goal to be pirate-esque, or did it just end up that way?”
I chuckle, “No, it was intentional. I’ve always enjoyed pirates, even as a kid, so I felt like it just made sense.”
“I think it’s nice that you made it your own. There are enough modern hipster bars in the area. It’s a refreshing thing to walk into.”
Her compliment made my heart beat a little harder. I’m never one to assume, but she doesn’t strike me as someone who would hang out in a bar like mine. Granted, I guess I can’t really picture her hanging out in bars in general, but maybe that’s because I have always been a fan of the smaller, more dive bars. And I can confirm that I’ve never seen someone of her caliber in any of them.
Once our food is brought out, I ask her about how she got into working for the state. We quietly chatted about some of the situations that she’d walked into, which unintentionally made me feel much better about my slip-up. But simultaneously, it made me realize how terrible men can be. I can’t imagine yelling at her regardless of what she told me. People are awful.
The server brings over the check, and without hesitation, I slide my card into the little black folder and hand it back to them with a quiet, ‘Thank you.’ I bring my attention back over to her, her eyes a little wide but going back to normal as she continues telling me about another bar owner being a complete ass.
I fill out the slip, leaving cash for the tip, before looking up at her.
“Ready?” I ask. She just nods a few times before sliding out of the booth. I wave my hand in front of me, “After you m’lady.”
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯
“So, how far do you live from here?” I try to make some form of small talk on the way back to her car, avoiding the elephant in the room.
“I live in Skowhegan, so it’s a little hike,” she tells me, looking around at the area’s architecture, “but my family has a house on Sebago Lake, so it’s not as bad when I have to come down here.”
“Oh, I'm sure it’s peaceful over there.” I imagine how quiet that lake house must be this time of year. With minimal people vacationing or trying to fish on the lake, and it’s probably gorgeous in the mornings.
“It really is,” she says, looking down at her feet for a second, “Do you live close?”
“I actually live above the bar,” I laugh every time I tell someone, “I know that probably seems ridiculous.”
“Convenient, at least,” She giggles softly before looking at me with a smile. Oh, I’m gonna throw up.
“It’s a blessing and a curse,” I tell her, “Blessing when you can just roll out of bed and run downstairs if you oversleep, but a curse when I find myself in there most days.. And nights.” Pointing at the crosswalk, nobody was coming; I placed my hand on the small of her back as I led her into the street, shit, carefully pulling my hand back as she stepped off the sidewalk.
“You don’t get sick of being there?”
“You would think so, but no. I love it, even if working with my brothers can be an absolute chore sometimes.” I tell her.
She grabs my arm gently.
“I think that’s great, Jacob. It’s refreshing to hear someone love their job in this industry. It’s few and far between.” I glance over at her as she says it; my stomach has little knots forming as she squeezes my bicep a few times before pulling her hand back.
She points to her car, parked just a short distance ahead of us. I see her pulling her keys from her bag as we approach it, unlocking the doors. I open her door for her, watching her face redden a little at the gesture. As she’s settling into her seat, I notice a brochure-looking paper in her passenger seat before realizing there’s a photo on the front. And a name. Oh my god, Charlotte. That’s why she was so upset.
Setting her bag down in front of the pamphlet, she turned back to me with a soft smile, “How much should I send you for food?”
“Don’t worry about it,” I tell her.
“But, Jacob..”
“It was my idea. I’m not going to make you pay for that.” Also, it’s the least I can do, especially now.
“Okay,” she sighs. “Well, thank you for the food and walking me back here. I’m pretty sure I would have gotten lost.”
“Of course,” I tell her, “Drive safe.”
I go to close her door for her, and I don’t know what possessed me when I hesitate, “Actually—” what are you doing? “Let me know when you make it home? Just since it’ll be a little later.”
She nods subtly before saying, “Okay,” with a quiet laugh.
I bite at my bottom lip as I smile at her, gently shutting her door for her.
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯
“Now, where have you been?”
I haven’t even made it fully behind the bar, and I’m already getting harassed.
“It’s nice to see you too, Linda,” I laugh under my breath, “I had to take care of some paperwork, but I’m here now.”
Raising an eyebrow, she looks from me to my right, where Josh stands with a shit-eating grin. Oh, fuck me.
“And how was that paperwork, brother?” He says joyfully, emphasizing his skepticism with heavy air quotes.
And, here we go.
“The paperwork went well,” I side-eye him, “Thank you for asking.”
I watched the two of them share a look before looking back at me, and all I offered was a shrug in response.
“Why were you not in your office doing paperwork?” Linda questions as Eleanor joins her at the bar in their usual spots.
“Who wasn’t in the office?” Eleanor chimes in.
“Jake! He apparently went somewhere with someone to take care of paperwork,” Linda fills her in, like two school girls at lunch.
Rubbing my hand across my face, I turn around to dry some glasses while I’m interrogated further. I should have known my being nice to her would have me questioned.
“Well, that sounds like he went on a date,” Eleanor unknowingly agreeing with their past statements. Josh is the most enormous pain in my ass, I swear to god.
“It wasn’t a date!”
Josh laughed, “That sounds like something someone who went on a secret date would say.” I feel my body warm the more they talk about my “date.” WHICH WASN’T A DATE.
“Well, who paid?” Linda asks.
“Uhh… I did,” I hesitated to answer. “But- it was my idea to go there, so I didn’t want to make her pay anything.”
“Oh! You went with a girl?” Eleanor quietly questions.
“Yes, I needed help with some business stuff, and she was able to help me,” I tell her. “If she hadn’t come in so upset, I would have just been here the whole time.”
The ladies look at each other and then back at me before Eleanor pipes back up, “So what you’re saying is, I just need to come in here crying to score a date with you?”
A laugh falls out of me before I can even process what she’s said; at least someone has a sense of humor about all of this.
“That’s very nice of you to take her to lunch to try and help cheer her up, sweetheart,” Linda tells me. I smile at her compliment before putting away some of the glasses I had been drying. I feel Josh’s presence before he says anything, just setting some dirty glasses in the bin below the counter.
“Is she okay?” he whispers, leaning over to make sure nobody else heard.
“I don’t know, honestly,” I tell him, knowing I sound a little panicked about it.
“Did she say why she was upset?”
I shake my head ‘no’ before leaning over, “I saw one of those printouts you get at funerals in her car, and she was wearing all black, so I’m assuming that she uh—”
Josh covers his mouth and turns to look at me. If there’s one thing I know about my brother, it’s that he will absolutely empathize with anybody about anything.
“Oh shit,” he murmurs under his breath.
I can’t hide the look of concern on my face as we stare at each other for no more than a few seconds.
“She’ll be alright. You probably just caught a wave of grief, is all.” Josh says, grabbing my arm and giving it a few squeezes.
I let out a small breath. He’s right. She probably just hadn’t really let anything out, and I just asked the wrong question.
“You’re right,” I whisper back, patting the back of his hand on my arm, “I’m sure she’ll be fine.” But that isn’t going to stop me from worrying.
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯
Business picked up shortly after that, with all the tables full and chatter loud. It kept me from my thoughts, which is probably for the best. I’m grateful that Linda and Eleanor came in tonight; they always keep me busy.
I take small breaks from behind the bar to go check on the tables of people, collecting the empty glasses and bottles; sometimes, it’s nice to just mindlessly clean up. I spend a few minutes making small talk with some of the regulars, noticing the time as one of their phones lights up.
11:30 p.m. already? Where did the night go? I leave the table with a slight wave and head back to the bar to leave the dirty glasses. Setting them all on the back counter, I can tell Josh is caught up in whatever the ladies are telling him.
Rounding the corner into the hall, I quickly lock myself away in the bathroom. Pulling my phone out immediately, relief washes over me when I see her name sitting in my notifications. Thank god.
Charlotte: I made it home. Thank you again
Jake: I’m happy to hear that and of course
Jake: I hope everythings okay.
Sliding my phone back into my pocket, I head back into the bar. She’s home, at least there’s that.
“You can go if you want. I can handle the rest of the night,” I tell Josh quietly. He’s been here all day, and I definitely didn’t intend for him to cover the bar for that long.
“Are you sure?”
“Please, go get some sleep or call Quinn. Just get out of here while you can.”
He hands me the towel he was using and mouths ‘thank you’ as he slides by me; I really can’t blame him for being excited to go to bed. It’s been a long day.
The rest of the night seemingly flew by. A fair number of people, including Linda and Eleanor, left by 1 am, which meant I had to clock into my true Customer Service self for the last hour of the night. But it’s always nice when people start to trickle out early so that I can start cleaning up to close and make my life a little easier.
I’m leaning against the back counter talking to the last few customers, and I can’t help but let my mind wander. What if she’s still upset? There’s nothing I can do to help that situation, and that’s okay. Maybe she just needs a friend right now. I could do that? Or maybe she’s already told her friends, and Josh was right. Was she just having a moment? Oh god, what if she has a boyf-
My phone vibrates, pulling my attention away from my internal spiral. 1:57 a.m. Thank god.
Charlotte: It will be, i’m sorry that you had to witness that.
Jake: don’t apologize, i’m glad i was able to help..i hope?
Charlotte: It did help, truly.
That makes my heart feel a little weird. Don’t get ahead of yourself.
Jake: well.. if you need anything, let me know?
I set my phone down underneath the bar and started printing the tabs for the last customers who were sitting. I went through the motions as I put the papers out front of each of them with a pen. I watch as they sign on the line, possibly leaving a tip; either way, I’m not bothered. Leaving with a friendly ‘Have a good one,’ I follow behind them, locking the doors and shutting off the neon lights. Happy to know that I have hardly anything left to do.
The brisk air hits me as I lock the back door, and I practically run up the stairs. Opening the door, it’s quiet. He must be asleep then. I carefully walk through the apartment, cracking his door open to see him tucked away in bed.
“Goodnight, Josh,” I whisper, pulling his door shut gently.
I shut my door as softly as I could, immediately pulled my flannel off, and tossed it on the end of my bed. Followed by my jeans before I grab my phone from my nightstand. 2:34 a.m. I open my messages to see her name sitting there with the blue, unread messages dot glowing back at me.
Charlotte: I may take you up on that.
Why is she still awake? It’s so late.
Jake: I hope you do
Be more obvious, Jake, come on..
Jake: Also why are you still up? lol
It changes from ‘delivered’ to ‘read’ almost instantly. I watch the typing bubbles pop up, making my stomach turn.
Charlotte: I just haven’t been tired enough to sleep, but I think I’m getting there.
Jake: After everything, I figured you’d be exhausted
Charlotte: You would think lol
Dropping my phone next to me. I rub my hands down my face. Trying to get the look on her face just before she cried out of my mind. ‘I’m so sorry’ in her sad little voice, playing on a loop. The sounds of her sobs against my chest, her shaking in my arms. I almost wish that I didn’t know why she was upset now.
Jake: well don’t let me keep you up
This time, my message sat on delivered for a few minutes. I did my daily scroll on mindless apps and looked at the few new photos people had tagged the bar in before she replied.
Charlotte: You’re not a bother at all, but I should probably try to sleep before it gets too much later.
Charlotte: Goodnight Jacob
My mind ran through all the ways that I could reply. How I’d love to tell her that I’m sorry for her loss and that I hope everything gets better. Even that, I had a lovely time talking to someone outside of my family and their partners for more than a few minutes as I served them a beer. It felt like we could be friends even, with the way she didn’t seem phased by any of the vaguely nerdy things I said. Unfortunately, my hands settled on something more straightforward, and I quickly hit ‘send.’
Jake: sleep well, Charlotte

Back to the Future Part II, The Novel by Craig Shaw Gardner: Thoughts, commentary, and general ramblings
Part 6: A weird-looking old man and a little guy in a leather jacket.
Previous posts here
• Instead of describing Doc as a “crazy, wild-eyed old man,” Old Biff says, “a weird-looking old man,” which is just so personal, lol
• There’s an interesting scene where Marty is almost caught in Biff’s garage. The shouting between Biff and his grandmother isn’t there to alert Marty, and instead, Biff just walks straight out to the garage. Marty thinks it’s Doc who has come to rescue him and calls out, which Biff hears. Marty then hides in the car, and waits as Biff looks around a bit before getting distracted.
• I really want the full scene of Doc scrambling to get that new hat and bike so he can head over to Biff’s house. The book mentions that he’d bought the bike a few hours prior (then had to wait for it to get dark enough) but I’d love to see how that played out. I also want Marty doing his shopping for his Inconspicuous outfit.
• Marty has a very funny response to Doc reminding him to be careful at the dance since his other self is there with Lorraine. “Yeah, that’s right! Hey, that’s cool, Doc. Maybe I’ll say hello to myself.”
This is followed immediately by, “’No!’ Doc felt like he might have a heart attack.”
And what I want to know is: is Marty just being a wisenheimer, or is he genuinely considering stopping to chit-chat with his other self? I could honestly see it going either way with Marty.
• This chapter is giving me a few good chuckles so far. Marty enters the dance and it says, “He stepped through, and found himself in the same alcove where he’d had that heart-to-heart with his future parents—the one about being nice when your son sets fire to the rug.”
Why don’t we have any definitive information on The Rug Incident? That story should’ve been included in the comics. I need to know what unfolded that day. Why did Marty set the rug on fire? Was it purely accidental? Did little Marty go through an arsonist phase?
I demand answers.
• When we return to Doc, who is still riding his bike all over the place, he ends up at the Peabody farm. There’s a cop there talking to Mr. Peabody, who’s recounting the alien encounter he had. Which…doesn’t make much sense to me since this is a week now since the “flying saucer” originally crashed into his barn. But I guess this has been an ongoing ordeal, and Otis has been trying to get someone to take him seriously.
Anyway, Doc is worried that they might actually stumble upon where he’s hidden the DeLorean behind the billboard, so he goes over and announces that he saw the spacecraft take off wayyy in the other direction. The police officer and Otis immediately take off in search of it.
• I wish I got a dollar for every time in this novel that Marty has said, “Yo, Doc!” because I would have many dollars.
• Lester (Wallet Guy) describes Marty to Biff as, “A little guy in a leather jacket.” So true, Lester. He IS just a little guy in a leather jacket.
• Ok, OK!! So! Two things to mention about the scene after the dance where Marty runs into Biff outside the door. After Biff calls him chicken, Marty once again recalls that, per his mother’s repeated suggestions, he’s supposed to count to 10 when he’s upset. And as he wrestles with his feelings, he thinks, “Maybe he always felt he needed to do this because he was so short.” !!!!! May I direct you to this ask and poll? There you have it, folks. Marty (book Marty, at least) is quite aware of his height and ALSO aware that it might be the reason he wants to fight at the slightest provocation.
• I already always feel bad for the Western Union guy when I watch the movie, and this makes me feel even more sorry for him. He gets no closure!!! He will NEVER know what the 70-year-old mystery letter was all about. The most disappointed voice Marty has ever heard!!
• We close with the scene of Marty running back to the clock tower. However, his revealing his presence to Doc is pretty different in the book than it is in the movie. We’re told, “Marty stepped out of the shadow of the courthouse. He tapped Doc on the shoulder.”
I mean. It definitely doesn’t have The Flair of Marty running full speed and dramatically spinning Doc to face him, but it is funny. He just. Steps out from the shadows and gives him a little tap. A gentle, “Um, hi, hello, I’m back.” Amuses me to think about.
This is how I imagine it, btw.
• The book ends with Doc passing out and Marty legitimately fearing that Doc may have just DIED before his very eyes, and how will he ever get home now?
I guess we’ll find out in the part III novel! Stay tuned.

Tienes Mi Corazón - Chapter 12
~*~ 18+ Content below. MDNI. Extra warning for Micah being a c*** ~*~
Shady Belle – A hidden jewel within the swamps of Lemoyne. The Van Der Linde gang had been pushed even further East thanks to the looming threat of the Pinkerton Detective Agency. The age of the new world was dawning upon them and yet Dutch still insisted on opposing the dangers striving towards them. Water and oil; a tragic tale of what will never be. A fusion to never co-exist.
Time was running out. Yet Dutch still held onto hope. Still. Was it hope? Or selfishness? Did he truly love the very souls whom he led astray or were they pawns in his game of deceit? In this moment, those questions could not be answered with confidence. There was still time. Time to make amends. It all depended on Dutch and those who stood by his side.
Hosea heavily influenced Dutch in the most mundane yet omnipotent way. Being by Dutch’s side all these years had kept the leader on the right path most of the way. He gave Dutch the wings he needed to fly. The voice he needed to preach. The knowledge to keep those they could alive. The love to keep everyone bonded. Hosea had a particular gift in these sorts of things. He was by no means an angel but human. He understood emotions well, having experienced a lifetime of his own trials and tribulations. The elder gentleman was one folk would go to for advice, the one who they approached without hesitation. Even those who hesitated would find themselves at ease after exchanging conversation.
This golden morning, Hosea decided to make his own approach to the one who perhaps needed his guidance the most.
“How you doing, Miss Miriam?” The doe-eyed woman looked up from her book. Upon seeing Hosea, she gave the man a warm smile, twisting her perched figure which sat on the edge of the stone fountain. She straightened out the creases of her dress, somewhat salvaging a respectable appearance despite the sweat which glossed across her skin. She had never experienced such thick, warm air like this before – much like many of the other camp members. The cold was something she thrived in. Frosty mornings and bitter nights had always been her preference.
“Good morning, Mr Matthews. I’m fine, thank you. And yourself?” He ignored her question. His way of words was always to put another in the spotlight. Selfless and soul searching.
“The heat is pretty unbearable?” A small quirk of her bottom lip caught his eye. It made him smile, knowing he was close to breaking down that barrier. Not that he wished to intrude – he only wanted what was best for each member. If that meant breaking down their barriers to help understand them more, then that was a battle he was willing to slowly win.
“It is really hot here…” Hosea pulled his fingers against the inside of his neck tie in agreement.
“I guess you’re not used to the heat.” His statement made Miriam hesitate. In the end, she shook her head with a small smile. The older gent’s eyes scanned her, piecing her together like some intricate puzzle just waiting to be solved. He had been a good judge of character. He knew there was nothing deviant about the young woman. His mind only wondered why she kept so many secrets. Something as big as her identity. To him, it made sense she had to be someone of importance or someone on the run for doing something bad. Or both.
Taking the opportunity, he pressed. “I suppose the cold is more to your liking?” She nodded. This prompted a chuckle from Hosea, thinking of a passing joke. “Then you would have liked it up in them mountains…” His thoughts trailed off, thinking back to that time of darkness for the gang. Letting his head take over, he subconsciously sat down beside Miriam, resting his elbows on his knees. His hands intertwined to lace his fingers together, his head hanging lower in thought. The silence made Miriam look closer at the man. She could read his eyes – how much hurt he had experienced from the past. The slight remnants of fear which resided within. The young woman understood that ‘the mountains’ were not a good time for anyone. She wished to offer words of comfort but how could she when she knew so little about the situation. About their history. It was not her place to. “You ever been up that way? Past Colter?” A shake of her head made Hosea lift his eyebrow. “Too cold for you?” The comment confused her and without thinking she answered.
“No. I love the cold. It’s just been a little too far West for me- the snow that is.” Placing the pieces together quickly in his mind, Hosea effortlessly chimed in leaving her little time to think.
“So East?” Miriam’s eyes opened wide in disturbance. A pause was set between his voice and her own.
“I’m sorry?”
“You’re from the East then.” It wasn’t a question. It was a statement. Goosebumps prickled over the skin of her arms. Her worry became evident to Hosea. He too could read people, just like her. He could do it perhaps a little too well. His eyes shifted down to the ground, not wanting his gaze to cause her any alarm. “I know the country well, Miriam. There are only a few places around here that accommodate to your preferred climate.” She felt herself becoming flustered. She could not allow herself to let him see it so she looked over her shoulder towards the marshy waters. Her eyes searched for something in particular to focus on but her worries made the task difficult. Miriam’s silence spoke a thousand words. Clouds which encased her were gradually starting to part; not without challenge. Thunder flashed through those clouds. Before that mysterious haze could ever clear, the storm would have to present itself. Only then would the suffocation of her secrets could be lifted at last.
Flickering his eyes to her hands, Hosea focused on the book she had been reading prior. He recognised the book cover and the intriguing engravings on the spine of it. “I’ve read that one.” The heat from her head dissipated once she turned her head back to her company. It took her a few seconds to realise what Hosea was referring to. The book offered her so much comfort, therefore a smile was always a response to its very memory.
“It’s my favourite.”
“I’ve noticed.” He stared down at the pages, a coy look present on his face. “You must know the book well if you’re reading it in Spanish.” As quickly as it went, the heat reappeared but this time across her cheeks. Dryly, she swallowed, hoping she could blame her reaction on the heat of the bayou. Hosea was not stupid. There was an aura of omniscience which surrounded him, nothing ever able to get past him. It was down to his caring nature. The want to help people do better and be their best selves. Honest and free.
Unable to fight her nerves, Miriam went to stand and close her book but Hosea’s hand went to her shoulder to stop her. “No – no – no. Please.” His free hand offered her old seat back, inviting her to stay just a little longer. His tone of voice proved to her he meant no harm. She accepted, denying her own departure. Not being too knowledgeable on the language, Hosea referred to the page the book was currently open on. “Which part of the story are you on?”
Breathing calmly through her nose, she settled back into the comfort of her book to accept its embrace. “When the Knight tells the Princess how he truly feels.” Her cheeks darkened yet somehow a smile persevered through to support her words. “You know, at the end?” Hosea nods.
“Ah yes, yes.” He leant over her, scanning over the Spanish text. Despite not knowing the language, he believed he could find the part he wished to enlighten. “The part where he says… ah! Here it is…” His brows furrowed as he attempted to read the foreign words. “Tienes… mi… corazón.” Hosea lifted his head, looking at Miriam with a smile of delicate purity and warmth. “You have my heart.”
“You have my heart.” Miriam repeated in acknowledgement. The Knight saying this to his Princess had always starstruck the young woman. She had wondered evermore what it would feel like to have someone confess their feelings like that. It was truly beautiful to her. To tell someone that they no longer own their heart because it had been claimed by their true love – it was words of poetry which came from the soul. To be so selfless to another. To love them so much you could trust them with something which could be broken so easily. One crunch of their hand could shatter the organ to shake their realm of reality. Such trust was so hard to come by. Although the very thought of having this much faith in someone was deemed as beautiful to her – it also scared her and to Miriam, there was something magical about that.
Observing the peaceful look of wonder which portraited her face, Hosea’s expression softened as he knew that look all too well. A look of yearning which he once held for Bessie. “And what a powerful thing to say to someone.” His eyes looked up to the morning sky, watching a pair of larks which flew over in blissful glee. “It doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from – anyone can feel that moment of power. Only if they allow themselves to.” He turned his head and his eyes locked with Miriam’s who was intrigued by what he was saying. “Love holds no judgement, Miriam. Some would say it is the most powerful force on earth.” His words rattled her yet her heart thumped against her chest in a way which lulled her; as if it was telling her to listen. She shook her head.
“I don’t know what you’re trying to tell me, Mr Matthews.”
“Miriam.” He called her name firmly to silence her. The both of them knew very well what he was insinuating. “It takes a lot to completely destroy love. Sure – someone’s past may cause a few cracks, or – what they once did could hurt – but if that person also trusts you with their heart, then there is nothing to be scared of.” His words moved her. She could not deny the truth in which he spoke yet ever the same, her fear of rejection held her back. Shaking her head, she tried to search his eyes for an answer.
“But how would I know-”
“You won’t know unless you tell them.” Their conversation felt almost hypothetical yet underneath the mystery, they both knew who and what they were talking about. His answer held a double meaning. To tell Javier how she really felt… it also meant telling him the truth. Just like Sadie had once told her.
The thunder within her mind had stopped. Clouds were beginning to clear away and now, all that was left was her thoughts. Her head felt light, no longer heavy to the burden of what she must do. In a way; she felt ready.
It was time.
Seeing Hosea stand up from the fountain made Miriam mouth a quiet thank you to the older man. Hosea acknowledged this but being the man he was, he didn’t wish to pry and make her feel in debt. He brushed it away; another selfless act on his part. He had never once changed; always the man who wished to help others. Even as he began to walk away, he couldn’t help but pass by a comment to help encourage her that her past wasn’t as scary as it seemed.
“I hear Annesburg is lovely this time of year. Especially a little further up North-East from it.” He looked over his shoulder at Miriam. But before she could react, she read his expression which soothed her. In quiet understanding, she knew by the way he spoke and the look he gave her that he wouldn’t utter a word to no one. He knew.
A smile was left behind on her lips.
‘Thank you, Hosea…’
Night had claimed the land fast that day, much to the appreciation of the people. It had been the hottest day of the year thus far, so the night’s cooler air was welcomed with open arms. The clinch of coolness wasn’t the only thing which was welcomed that night.
After Dutch, Arthur and John had met with Angelo Bronte, their return to camp had to be celebrated – Jack had come back safe and sound.
Cheers and laughter encircled the campfire as Javier sung to the strumming of his guitar. A talent he possessed – not just the way he played or sang but his ability to bring his fellow camp members together. He was the glue which bound everyone together, almost completely unbreakable. How Miriam admired that part about him. Looking from afar, she watched him joyously express himself through the lyrics of his song, the others chiming into the chorus with theatrical delight. It made her heart swell to see how together everyone was. It was the happiest she had seen them all.
She wished she was nearer to Javier but she held herself back, wanting him to be with his family. After all, it was a bond she never wanted him to break – only solidify further. Even throughout the day, she had kept her distance from him; ever since her conversation with Hosea. She wanted to figure out the right words to say to him; it had taken her what felt like an eternity to figure out, but she knew she had to do this. Not just for herself, but for him. Javier deserved to know the truth. He had been so good to her.
He found her at her most vulnerable. Took her into the safety of the gang. Explored the Heartlands with her – he even took a bullet for her. Part of her really wanted to know how he felt about her before she could confess everything, however her need to be honest and give her heart to him was stronger. He had asked for her trust and that was what she wanted to give him. Her full, undying trust. No matter how frightening the thought of it was.
She loved him.
The very thought made her heart bubble in her chest like lava waiting to erupt. In the past she tried to push those feelings aside, in fear of the hurt it may cause, but now it invaded her entirely. It was undeniable and inescapable. The chains which encased her had finally rotted enough to the point she could finally break free. All she needed to do was try. And Javier deserved that at the very least.
Leaving the coolness of the night’s air, Miriam retreated back inside the walls of the house which stood strong in the middle of camp. Closing the door behind her, she leant against the wood to take slow, deep breaths. She knew the moment was close. Tauntingly close. Even now she struggled to think of a strong opening line to start this chaotic and somewhat dangerous confession. Knowing the gist of the conversation was easy, but as for what to exactly say – this was unclear. Trying her best to snap out it, Miriam walked through the hallway and into one of the rooms where a mirror hung on the wall. Cautiously she approached it, as if one wrong step could cause it to fall to the ground. That was the last thing she needed – seven years of bad luck. A superstition she most definitely believed in, perhaps even more so after Molly’s pocket mirror broke. Since then, it seemed the poor woman had never gotten a break. She would sometimes see Molly on the outskirts of camp, looking out into the wilderness, mumbling incoherent things about Dutch. It broke Miriam’s heart to see her this way. She had attempted to talk things out with Molly, but she pushed the woman away. She did not want anyone’s company other than Dutch’s; which was something he could not give her.
Looking into the mirror, Miriam’s reflection shone back at her through distorted cracks. The cracks were like veins which jaggedly etched their way along the centre to the corners of the frame. Subconsciously, she brought a hand to her hair, stroking down the fly aways. How humbled she felt about her appearance. Javier was strikingly handsome to look at, yet she felt the complete opposite about herself. She found it comical the idea of Javier finding her as attractive as she found him. In her irrational mind, there was just no way. She sighed, hopelessly. Yet her eyes wandered to the dress she was wearing.
After all this time, she had finally finished weaving together the dress she started making back in Horseshoe Overlook. Despite Javier’s kindness in buying her the dresses back in Strawberry, Miriam felt it a waste to abandon her project. The dress was made from silky, scarlet fabric which was made to fit her exact measurements. It held no long sleeves but her shoulders were crowned with the smallest black ruffles. The neck line had shaped a most magnificent V-shape which complimented her décolletage. Following the waist line down, the ruche of the skirt had been pinned up to create a gothic-style waterfall effect on the sides and through the opening of the outer skirt, black lace fell to the ground as the underskirt. The dress created a feeling of pride which was new to the young woman. She wanted this to be the dress. The dress she would confess to Javier in. It made her feel empowered yet vulnerable and that was something she felt fascinated by.
“My, my. Don’t you look pretty in that getup.” A chill ran down her spine, recognising that voice. Miriam whipped her head over her shoulder, fast enough to cause a couple strands of locks to fall from her clipped-up hair. Micah stood in the doorway, leaning lazily against the wooden frame. He shifted his weight so he now stood straight, ready to approach. “Who’re you getting’ dolled up for, I wonder…” Not wanting to give him the time of day, she stayed silent. She knew all too well that people like him craved responses. Tauntingly, he stepped towards her which immediately caused Miriam to fully turn to face him to stand her ground. Much like the time back in the cabin, where she was cornered by the O’Driscolls.
The clicks of Micah’s boots echoed through the room like the sound of a ticking clock. Her shoulders tensed but never once did she break eye contact from him. He stopped walking once he was a couple metres away from her, wanting her to fall into a false sense of safety. One thing was certain – being alone in a room with Micah Bell was never something safe and she was smart enough to know this.
A snicker trickled past his lips, holding out his hands to gesture inwardly to himself. “Is this all for me?” A look of disgust shadowed over Miriam’s face. If only a look could really kill someone, he would be nothing more than a corpse before her. Clenching her jaw, Miriam remained composed before the serpent, still having no intention of giving in to his sick game. Micah tilted his head with his mouth slightly agape, soaking in her defensive state. That scowl she held for him… he found it utterly delicious. “Let’s take a good look at you…”
Before she could react, his hand grasped her jaw, the tips of his fingers pinching into the skin of her cheeks. In defiance she tried to shake herself from his grip by snapping her head to the side but he only squeezed her face tighter to make her heel. Not wanting to be permanently injured by his hand, she stilled, keeping her gaze away. His breathing was heavy, like he was fighting for crystal clear air. The smell of her was almost too intoxicating for him to handle. His eyes scanned over her features, looking at the shade of her glossy lips to the colour of her eyes and sighing in bliss when she would batt those pretty lashes which each blink. The grip of his hand loosened just slightly so he could angle his thumb up towards her waterline where black kohl had been carefully pencilled across. Wanting to taint the remarkable portrait before him, his thumb brushed across the bottom of her eye to smear the black eyeliner down past her outer corners. He snickered at the art he had just created.
Now she looked fragile – as though she had been crying.
“Ain’t you just… pretty.” He licked the top of his lip, his warm breath coming through his nose like a bull in heat. “Nasty little thing, dressin’ up for ol’ Micah…” His thumb went back to the start of her waterline to once again follow along, but this time, he dragged his digit downwards once he reached the middle. A smoky smear fell to the apple of her cheek. His thumb was rough and he had pressed hard, causing a streak of faint redness to appear behind the ashy smears. How appetising she looked like this. Like a forbidden fruit he so desperately wanted to take a bite from. Being so close to her, a couple strings of breathy laughter escaped him. He found it funny. The joke of it all; how easy it would be to take her right now whilst everyone was occupied outside.
The fantasy of her crying for help whilst all the other gang members would be nonchalantly celebrating, not able to hear her pleas at all. It was the perfect opportunity. Quickly, his mind pieced together a delectable scenario. He’d smash the back of her head against the mirror, just so show her how much fun he can be. Then he’d throw her like a little dolly onto the cold wooden floor before taking her from behind. Oh, how the sounds of her dress being ripped apart would stiffen his cock. He would be entertained for a long while…
His smirk disappeared at his next intruding thought. ‘Unless he interferes…’ Anger flashed across Micah’s face which resulted in his hand clasping round her jaw again and this time, forcing her to look at him. “Or is this all for that fucking greaser, hm?” Now it was Miriam’s turn to see red. Without even a second thought, she pursed her lips before releasing them to spit into Micah’s face. The action was so sudden it took him a back, making him let go of her in the process. She took her chance to escape and bolted through the doorway and towards the grand doors which would lead her outside. He didn’t attempt to chase after her, instead using his preferred tactic to hunt his prey – threats.
“If you don’t come back here… I’ll fucking destroy your world. I know who you are.” Gritting his teeth, he walked towards the doorframe once he wiped the spit from his eyes. “And what you did.” He stopped once he was back in the doorway. This time he had his fists held tightly in a ball and his posture was hunch over, as if ready to charge at her. “If you walk out that door, I’ll tell your little greaser everything.” She could no longer ignore what he had to say. It enraged her the way he spoke about Javier like he was some form of weapon to be used against her, calling him those horrible derogatory names. Silence was no longer an option.
Snapping her head over her shoulder, she hissed her words. “You won’t have chance. I’ll be telling him tonight.” Her surge of confidence caught Micah off guard. She had a mean bite to her and it replaced his anger with excitement.
“Oh, really now?” For the last time, she turned around to fully face him.
“Yes. You have no power over me, Micah.” It sent chills over his body the way she snarled out his name. If he played his cards right, he could still make the world around her crumble. Micah had always had a sick desire to see beauty decay. It was the most natural form of art to him.
Micah held his hands up, as if to surrender. “Oh, ho. You got me there, sweetheart…” His tone of voice leered over her, spookily, like he knew something she did not. “I’m just thinking about that Mexican’s wellbeing is all.” Her eyebrows knitted closer together, confused by his change of heart. He smirked, knowing his new tactic was working. He took a step towards her, his hands still raised in sweet surrender. “It would be such a… shame… to see him – burdened with such knowledge.” Now he took a couple more steps closer, almost halfway across the landing. Slowly, Miriam’s eyebrows softened as though she could see her victory being taken away before her very eyes.
“… a burden?” Micah stopped himself from grinning. ‘Jackpot.’ He thought to himself. He knew very well which direction to take this conversation.
“Of course. I mean, when I discovered what you were, well… I was shocked. And that’s puttin’ it lightly- I mean…” Micah lowered his hands. His tone changed. “… ya did some real nasty things after all.” The young woman flinched at his words. “What you did… oof-” The blonde dropped his head momentarily, only to raise it slowly to look at her through his messy strands of hair which cascaded over his brows. “No normal person could ever look at ya the same way ever again.” Her blood turned cold at the horrifying thought. It felt unbearable, the idea of Javier shunning her away after discovering her past. She felt her eyes begin to sting with tears but she refused to let them fall, especially in front of Micah. Such a sight could not slip past Micah. Those tears which threatened to spill only fuelled him further. His hands hovered over her shoulders but he didn’t dare to touch.
“Sweetheart… I know it’s hard.” He didn’t have the faintest idea. “Ya just gotta understand… that greaser had his family and friends drop like flies, one by one. Murdered in front of him… so…” Micah tauntingly tilted his head side to side, as though he was weighing the options of what to say. “… it only makes sense he wouldn’t react well to what ya did. He’d hate you.” Her blood felt as though it were ice. For a moment, it felt impossible for her to breathe. Micah’s words made perfect sense. She convinced herself then and there that she had gaslighted herself into thinking that everything would be okay. Of course, there was no way Javier would be able to look past the things she did.
Not wanting to spend another second in Micah’s presence, she went to open the door but Micah’s hand held onto her wrist to pause her action. “Oi.” He growled, bringing her close into his chest. The dark-haired beauty frowned, still fighting the sting of her eyes. He lifted his hand and instead of grabbing her jaw again like last time, he curled his index finger and softly petted it over her cheek. “Don’t ya worry, doll. Ol’ Micah will be here to pick up the pieces.” He leant close to her face, his lips just a couple centimetres away from her own. “If ya tell him.” And just like that, he released her and she immediately ran out, slamming the doors in his face.
Her feet pattered down the steps and across the grass until she could find shelter under the gazebo, just a little away from the camp’s celebrations. She tried to calm her breathing although not a sound of it could be heard due to the rambunctious singing from both Uncle and Pearson. Even Arthur could be heard trying to join in, carefully trying to not slur his words due to the amount of whiskey he had consumed.
Looking to her hands, the young woman realised the shake that now rocked them uncontrollably. Her ears burned hot; her throat too dry to be able to swallow. Attempting to steady herself, Miriam’s hands rested on the pale wood of the banister and sank her head low to calm her rhythm of breaths once she wiped away her ruined eyeliner.
She knew Micah was not to be trusted; his words were a sorcery of evil. Malice was something he thrived to express. He was like a disease, persisting to take over and destroy something once good from the inside out. Yet those very words he spoke only awakened Miriam’s once buried paranoia. Just as she had at last calmed herself into thinking her past could not break the bond she shared with Javier, a threat loomed in its grand return to make her back down. Deep down, she still wanted to tell Javier the truth. Uneasiness plagued her at the scenario.
What if…
What if Micah spoke honesty, no matter how hurtful it came out? Would it be a burden for Javier? Would he…
‘Would he hate me?’ She bit the inside of her cheek; the taste of iron spilling in slow droplets down her throat. Would he or wouldn’t he. A riddle she could not solve. It was a gamble. A leap of faith.
Being so lost in her troubled thoughts, she had barely noticed the familiar presence behind her whose hands rested on the plumps of her hips. “Hola, hermosa ángel.” Regardless of her agonising thoughts, Miriam couldn’t help but melt under his touch. She breathed out his name, savouring it as though it was the last time she would ever be able to say it.
His hands stroked her hips a couple times, like he was soothing her for something he wasn’t quite aware of in that moment. With a feather-like touch, Javier’s hands slid over the peaks of her hips to take their place over her belly. The feeling was welcomed for it offered a warmth she did not mind faltering to. His chin rested over her shoulder which allowed Miriam to smell the whiskey and cigarettes that came from his long breaths. It was a smell she found appetizing and often salivated for during steamy exchanges.
“I haven’t seen you all day…” He mumbled, now turning into her neck to smell the gorgeously scented perfume which he found suited her and only her. A scent of lavender and powdery notes. Miriam pressed her back against his chest to allow him to fully hold her. His eyes were shut with the lightest of smiles, appreciating the tender fragment of time that stood still for their sake. A snapshot of gentle peace.
“I was… lost in thought, today.” He hummed at her response, finding it an acceptable answer for the time being. The tips of her fingers lightly traced over the knuckles of his hands. Even now, her thoughts troubled her deeply – yet his aura soothed her, preventing her from breaking down to the corruption Micah had caused. “I- My mind has been all over the place. I’m sorry.” A low rumble came from Javier’s throat in an understanding chuckle.
“Mine too.” His hands snaked past one another, tightening his embrace. His cheek pressed against the length of Miriam’s neck where his lips dusted across her skin in a sweet whisper. “I can’t get you off my mind, mi amor.” His lips and facial hair tickled her skin, causing her to momentarily break away from her intrusive thoughts in soft laughter.
“You’ve been drinking.” Turning her head to try and look at his expression, she could see his cheeks were slightly glazed with a pigment of rosiness. His eyes held a mist of heavenly delight, finding all things around him pleasant. Not denying her words, he raised the depths of his focus by looking into her dark hazel eyes.
“I speak only the truth.” His eyes closed lazily to fall into a blissful realm, allowing his lips to dance across her jawline and then the corner of her neck, underneath her ear. “Mi amor…” He whispered this line over and over again with each feathery kiss. Goosebumps responded back to him, giving in to the enchantment he cast over her. She held onto his arms to keep her from stumbling, bending at the knees as though she was becoming limp like a doll held by its owner. “Look at me.”
Javier loosened his hold on her so she could eventually turn around to face him. There were things he wanted to tell her which had been occupying him all throughout the day. Perhaps longer. Delving into the wondrous pools of her iris, he felt his chest seize for a brief moment. It amazed him how this woman standing before him had such a hold over his mind, body and feelings. Never in his twenty-six years of being on this earth had he felt this way before. It was foreign, shrouded in mystery; nonetheless a hold he never wanted to let go.
“Listen.” Javier stepped back from her, tilting his head down to the ground and raising his hands in front of him as though halting any attempt to interrupt him. “I’ve been thinking- I’ve been thinking, a lot… and…” He lifted his head and in doing so he placed his hands on his hips before rapidly flickering his thumb over the tip of his nose to brush off the last bits of nerves that had held him back before now. “You and I- We… I think…” He stopped himself.
The way she looked at him. It captivated him. She without a doubt took his breath away; without even trying. Her mere existence was enough to shake the ever-winding staircase of his reality. She had always captivated him. Ever since he first looked at her within that cabin. A short exhale of realisation escaped him.
“I think we’re good together.” He said it so matter of a fact, that his awkwardness had successfully been disguised by his liquid courage.
Miriam’s eyes became wide with surprise, not expecting him to say such things. She kept quiet, unable to find the right words to say. Javier stroked the back of his neck, not knowing how he made it this far. However, he understood that he had to finish what he had started. “I mean, only if you want that too.” Now the Mexican found himself second guessing how he approached his words. He wanted to continue to plead his case because of course, she was someone whom he wanted to fight for. “Look-” He stepped towards her; his hands now being held out to gesture with each word that needed visual guidance. “What I mean to say is- I don’t care about what you did, who you are or where you came from. None of that matters.” Miriam’s eyebrows furrowed upwards, her mouth becoming agape – not believing what he was saying. Javier’s hand held onto hers. His fingers squeezed tight to the following words. “I want you. Only you.” With his free hand, he gently placed his palm over her heated cheek. “Just as you are.” The words he uttered cut through her like a welcomed wound. A wound which hurt but distracted her from her anxious thoughts. He made her heart bleed with sweet sorrow.
She wanted him too. To Miriam, Javier deserved the world and more.
Pursing her lips together, Miriam tightly closed her eyes to lean into the hand which held her cheek. He was so warm, like the water of a hot spring steaming against ice cold skin. “Javier…” Bringing her hand to his own, she pulled it down from her cheek. “I’m not the woman you think I am…” A pause of hesitancy followed before she let go of his hands to hold her own. Javier looked at her with hurt in his eyes, as though he had been shot through his chest. It pained her to do this, but the taunt of Micah’s words could not allow her to let her walls fall apart. She allowed him to have her heart, but she could not do the same for him. She feared so much that his heart would die by her tainted touch. Her bottom lip quivered before she looked at him with tearful eyes. She could barely choke out her words. “But I wish I was. I truly do.”
Javier averted his eyes from her. For the first time, he did not know what to do. All he could do was look at to her, almost in disbelief. With all his strength, he set his hurt aside and tried to reach through to her. “Miriam…” He made a promise to himself. “Eres tan estupida…” (“You’re so stupid…”)
A promise that he would fight for her.
Both of Javier’s hands held onto her face to bring her back to this dimension. “¿Cuántas veces tengo que decírtelo?” (“How many times do I have to tell you?”) Her watery eyes blurred her vision yet she could still see the intense look of truth he emitted. “I don’t care.” A smile returned to his face, his sharp gaze softening. “I don’t care, Miriam.” He frowned yet his smile remained. “Don’t you remember?” Before she could respond to his question, Javier pulled on her hand so she would follow him.
They left the shelter of the gazebo, walking just outside of Shady Belle by the water yet remained concealed by the trees and greenery. They couldn’t wander too far due to the main road only being just up ahead. Once Javier stopped, he pointed up to the night sky. The galaxy of stars twinkled back in response, shining through the grey clouds which surrounded the moon. “You remember, don’t you?”
The organ within her chest tightened at the memory of those beautiful words. Without saying anything, she nodded. But he wanted more. He wanted her to fight back – to succumb to the feelings they both could not deny. “Then say them.” Her eyes tightly closed, her lips pursing back together.
She could not bring herself to say those words.
Javier held onto her waist, bringing her towards him so their hips met one another. “Say them to me, mi amor.” Their foreheads touched, his eyes trying to find hers through her thick lashes – still her irises were averted from his.
He deserved the truth.
His fingers tightened on her waist. His whispers became more soaked with passion. “I need to know.”
And the truth is what she wished to give.
“Javier… Tienes mi corazón.” Those words ripped through him like a rainfall of bullets. He pulled his head back, looking at her with shock. At last, he could see her alluring cocoa eyes. Her hand went to her chest as if to soothe the pain and ache she felt there. “Tienes mi corazón, Javier.” Her tears spilt down her cheeks, uncontrollably. Her walls had fallen to dust thanks to him. She felt exposed and vulnerable. And she was so grateful. Somehow her revelation made her feel lifted; unafraid. “And it will always be yours.”
No longer did a barrier stand between the two thus the only thing to be done was to fall into each other’s reality. He claimed her lips with his own, not caring that it sucked the air from her. He could not help himself after she had told him such euphoric words. Never did he think he would hear her say those words to him, especially in his language. Those three words spoke a million tales, matching up to each star that dotted the galactic sky. His reaction made Miriam cry more, the lump in her throat becoming so painful she could barely breathe. To others it would seem as though she was in pain. Forlorn and distressed. But the two of them knew that it was an articulation of happiness and that was all that mattered.
Miriam fought for air but was unable to win due to Javier’s hand holding onto the back of her head, pushing her further against his mouth. His tongue tangled around hers, barely allowing room for her to inhale. A meagre jolt of panic naturally took over her yet her own body betrayed her, keeping her pinned into his strong embrace. Colourful spots sparkled behind her closed eyes, signalling her impending downfall. She murmured his name against his mouth, revealing her desperation.
Not wanting her to pass out, just yet, he pulled his lips from her and watched the saliva slip over the centre of her bottom lip. Perilously she gasped out for air but was immediately silenced by his lips. She squirmed in ecstatic delight. The very thought of seeing stars just by him kissing her sent waves of paradise towards her core. She trusted this man to do whatever he wanted, knowing he never would have an inkling if ill malice. Her hands ran through his hair, unconsciously pulling away the band which held his hair back. His velvet ebony locks touched his shoulders where his blue waistcoat hugged against the white fabric of his blouse.
“Tienes mi corazón…” She whispered against his lips, repeating those words he found so beautiful. His hand clenched, grabbing a fistful of her hair. She mewled in contentment at the rough action.
“Mierda…” He grumbled, the tightening feeling of jeans around his groin which became uncomfortable all too quickly. The way she said those words, it was driving him fucking crazy. Pulling the clip that held her hair back, her mermaid-like waves fell past her shoulders like unravelled silk. All those feelings which held him back before, those chains no longer claimed him. Instead, he was finally free to do as he desired. No restraints or second thoughts. Only what felt right to both himself and her.
Javier’s hands grabbed Miriam’s ass, crunching together the carefully woven fabric she had seamed and lifted her without warning. Instinctively, her legs wrapped around his waist where her bare pussy caught his jeans just right, the tent of the fabric rubbing against her clit. The skirt of her dress covered the sight, but underneath, it was a vision to behold – one Javier could feel. The roughness of his jeans caused a friction which made her hips buck involuntarily. The sharp sparks of pleasure which flew through her like flashes of lightning made Miriam throw her head back, leaning her weight away from him so her hips had no choice but to force themselves harder against his concealed yet prominent cock. It didn’t take long for her slick to begin coating his jeans, as if her pussy was begging skin on skin contact. Without shame, Miriam bobbed her hips up and down the tiniest amount to rub her clit over the point of his jeans. Due to the ridged nature of his jeans, her clit became instantly swollen, enjoying the friction more than she imagined she would. Her wetness rapidly dampened the fabric and with aid was soaked further by his leaking tip. The thought of his precum seeping through to invade her pussy made her eyes roll back to see the stars.
The feeling of her hips rocking against his erection made Javier open his mouth to invite in the cool air in hopes it would help him re-centre himself – to stop him from fucking her so furiously that she would surely lose consciousness. Yet he reminded himself that all restraints were to be forgotten about. Just for this night at least. He wrapped an arm around her upper back and knelt down to the ground to place her on the grass, all the while keeping their hips connected like this. Her hips were raised, angled upwards over his thighs and he kept her like this so he could unzip his jeans to pull out his aching cock. In doing so, his fingers brushed over the area of his pants where their liquids seeped through. With the tip of his middle finger and thumb, he brought them up to his face and rubbed the slick together before retracting his middle finger away to watch the string of clear fluid stretch.
“Mi amor… if you keep doing things like this, I won’t be able to stop myself.” Through her flushed pants, she quizzed her lover.
“Stop yourself from what?” Innocently she blinked which caused Javier to arch over her, pressing his leaking head inside of her without warning. Not giving her a single chance to adjust, Miriam’s head fell back so her forehead was inches away from meeting the grass. Keeping her hips angled up towards the sky, Javier pressed a kiss to her exposed throat, growling against her skin.
“Fucking you until you’re full of my cum, mi amor.” The walls of her pussy clenched hard around the tip of his cock, milking him in response to his words. The two of them gasped in symmetry at the rapturous feeling. The tightness of her heat made it difficult to sheathe himself fully inside but once he did, he hung his head low between his shoulders, panting. His fingers dug into the earth to ground himself whilst Miriam tried her best not to make any sudden movements, still recovering from the brief moment of sheer bliss.
Soon, a laughter that was barely audible came from Javier. He lifted his head, looking through the messy strands of his hair to address his love. “You like the idea of that, hm?” With eagerness in her movements, she nodded her head to him; the memory of him almost coming inside her dancing around rent free in her head. She could still remember how hot the heat of his cum felt inside, even if it was only a drop. Her pussy spasmed again, wishing to be filled this time instead of it being wasted on her lower abdomen. He grunted, pulling his cock back until he was almost fully free from her.
Keeping the tip of his cock lined at her entrance, Javier pulled her thighs up and folded them back so her knees came to a beautiful bend. Her shoes slipped off her feet so her heels pressed into the rounds of her ass. He let go of her plump skin, watching her dress skirt pool around her chest – the sight of her pulsing pussy now on full view. That and her big doe eyes all tearful from sinful want, were a picture of perfection to the Mexican rebel. His hands traced over her knees, pushing them further apart before planting a kiss to one of them. He raised himself a little higher on his knees to get his angle right and once he was there, he slammed his cock deep and hard into her pussy; reaching depths Miriam didn’t even know was possible. The earth surrounding Miriam’s head sank lower, being pressed with great force by the back of her skull. A noise had left her mouth she didn’t even know could ever be recreated even if she tried. That very noise made her lover see red and repeated the violent snap of his hips over and over, earning a unique and satisfying moan from her each time.
The head of his cock abused her insides, forcing her heat to overflow with more of her slick in a pathetic attempt to soothe the overstimulation which was being invoked. Her head was dizzy, unable to think rationally whilst he pounded into her pussy like she was just some tight hole for him to let his frustrations out on. “Oh my God… Javier! Javier!” Her sanity was long gone, no care being present to fear what others might hear. She felt his hands pull harder on her knees, bringing her hips impossibly closer to his own; Miriam became a babbling mess. He hit depths within her that shot fiery sparks of gunpowder through her core all the way to her head. Her toes curled, bracing herself for his ruthlessness that would undoubtedly continue.
Already, her pussy squeezed his cock, ready to deliver its final chokehold. Javier placed an elbow and hand beside her head whilst the other rested in the same manner but above her head. Not once did his unforgiving thrusts change in pace. “Mi amor- Ah! Miriam…” His voice was quiet through the loudness of his grunts, yet as though the elements of nature respected their moment of union, Miriam heard him clear as day. “Te amo.”
‘Those words…’
She hiccupped, feeling the swell of her heart become unbearable. Javier kissed her forehead. “Te amo… te amo…” He never stopped saying those words. With every thrust, every pant and groan, he cooed those words to her. He would say it as many times as it took for her to finally understand. She felt her head ache, still unable to stop herself from crying. All she could do was place her hand on his cheek and kiss the corner of his mouth.
Even then, he still did not stop.
‘He loves me…’ The happiest smile she had ever conjured in her entire lifetime graced her features. ‘He really loves me…’
Being close to his release, Javier shuddered, his head falling lower to try and stop himself. He could feel she was close too. She could tell by his silence he was trying hard not to give in, selflessly wanting her to come before he did – yet each time it risked him coming inside. Breaking his concentration, Miriam brought her lips to his ear, begging him in a sultry voice.
“Please, come inside-ah! Javier! Please…” Miriam raised both her shoulders in a euphoric high, knighting each side of his face as his forehead now came into contact with the bottom of her throat. His nails scratched hard at the dirt, whilst her own snaked under his arms and latched onto his shoulder blades. Her nails pierced in through the fabric of his waistcoat, not realising she was in fact drawing blood. Even Javier couldn’t feel it, due to the feeling of his cock pulsating inside her becoming overwhelming. “Please…” She lowered the volume of her voice but kept a higher pitch than normal – something she naturally did when she wanted something bad. “Javier… I want you to come inside me. Make me yours.”
Like a cryptic code being cracked, it unlocked the shackles which bound him. A second wind of energy eloped through his body like an untameable hurricane. The rhythm of his hips became faster, more ruthless with no remanets of gentleness. He wanted nothing more in that moment than for her wishes to be granted. And for his own – to have her as his – whole and complete. Sweat glossed down the muscles of his back, sticking to his garments which caused an imaginary suffocation as his climax overcame him, spurting his hot cum inside her weeping pussy. He pressed his hips hard into her and stayed like that, as if his only goal was to make sure her womb became full of his fertile seed. Upon the first contact of his cum, her pussy clenched and pulsed around his length, milking each and every drop as Miriam experienced her own ascension. His cum felt excruciatingly hot but it only heightened her senses and made her journey to paradise all the more heavenly.
The feeling of her taking all of him so receptively was something he cursed himself for not experiencing sooner. He didn’t want the moment to end – even during the peak of his high, he slipped his hand between her thighs to rub his thumb over her clit in circles. The elation she felt from his unexpected action made Miriam snap her hips into his, forcing his cock deeper creating more room for his cum to splurge through. The overstimulation made the young woman shake violently, her pussy now refusing to release her hold on his cock. Javier groaned loud into her throat, the noise emanating from deep within.
Finally, with the last few rocks of his hips, he pulled his cock from inside her, the spoils of his climax spilling out with the friction of his length. Once he had fully unsheathed himself, due to her hips being pointed at a high angle, any droplets of cum which surrounded the circumference of her heat fell back inside. The sight of her cum-filled pussy made Javier’s cock twitch, threatening to become hard again. Her puffy cunt pulsed, drinking back every last drop until it was deep inside her warm cavern.
Attempting to wipe away her tears, the mundane fidgeting caught Javier’s attention, him only now realising just how badly she had been crying. Once he tucked himself away, he leant over her to brush his thumb over her watery cheeks.
“Hey…” He cooed. He thought her tears were a product of their love-making but seeing her continue spill them made the man feel genuine concern. A flash of hurt sparkled across his coffee-coloured eyes as she scrunched her nose and tried her best to wipe away anymore tears that were left behind. “Did I hurt you?” A crackle of laughter bubbled past her lips, shaking her head to him.
“No.”
“Then why are you crying?” That wide, close-eyed smile returned once more and this time he was there to witness her expression of joy.
“I’m… I’m just so happy.” A charming look graced Javier’s features.
“Yeah?” Miriam nodded, humming her confirmation. He closed his eyes in contentment. “Me too, mi amor.” Javier lifted her own delicate hand towards his face. With a look of faraway dreams, he placed the softest of kisses against her fingers. To finally hear her speak such honeyed words to him and he in return at long last came to terms with his deep-rooted feelings he held for her – the shadows within his mind felt less dark than before. His demons had been blinded by her luminescent light.
He couldn’t help but consider if she was an angel sent by God. Or a Saint sent to guide him through the darkness that threatened to take over.
Whoever she was, or whomever had sent her, he knew he had to appreciate every waking second with her. Time threatened all beings.
He vowed silently, on that warm summer’s night, that he would devote himself to her and strive for a life where they could be free.
Together.

Could you do nessian trapped in an elevator or together in a power outage?
oooooo yeah I sure can. this was supposed to be funny at first but then it got away from me and welp here we are
“Cassian, stop it,” Nesta hissed, shooting him an annoyed look as he jumped up and down in the elevator like a little kid. “I’m serious.”
“Why?” Cassian replied with a wide grin. “You scared?”
Nesta and Cassian were on their way upstairs to celebrate Feyre and Rhys’ engagement in their fancy penthouse apartment. Over her dead body had she wanted it to look like they’d come to the party together, but she hadn’t wanted to be even later than she already was, so she’d swallowed her pride and gotten onto the elevator once he’d held it open for her.
Of course, she was seriously regretting that now that he was acting even more childishly than usual.
“I’m not scared,” she snapped at him. “I’m being sensible.”
“Sounds like you’re scared,” he shot back, still grinning. She hated how handsome that stupid smile made him look. “Come on, Nes. Live a little.”
“Stop calling me that,” she demanded.
“Make me,” he fired back, jumping one last time for good measure.
Nesta opened her mouth to tell Cassian exactly where he could shove it when the elevator made a strange groaning sound. Cassian finally stopped jumping, a slightly worried expression on his face as the elevator shook somewhat, and when the elevator came to an abrupt stop he at least had the decency to look sheepish.
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Nesta groaned as the lights flickered and then dimmed. “Are you fucking serious?”
“Just push the help button,” Cassian said, taking a few steps forward so he could lean over to hit the red button. “They’ll come quick. You know the wealthy aren’t allowed to suffer for as long as us regular folks.”
He was so warm she could feel the heat radiating off him even though they weren’t touching, and a small part of her missed it as he backed away. A much larger part of her wanted to strangle him for getting them in this situation in the first place, but she’d much rather be trapped in an elevator with a living person. “They better come quickly.”
“Mhmm, I love it when you threaten me,” he said cheekily. She whipped around to glare at him and his delight only grew further. “The things you do to me, sweetheart.”
“I told you to stop calling me that,” she said back frostily. “My name is Nesta. Not Nes, not sweetheart. Nesta.”
“Guess I’ll just have to get more creative,” he told her, something like challenge gleaming in his eyes. “I’m sure I’ll find something you like eventually.”
Nesta shot another glare his way before someone finally responded on the intercom. Once they got all the details hammered out, she was forced to admit semi-defeat: someone wouldn’t be able to get to them for at least half an hour, so they’d have to entertain themselves until help arrived.
“At least we still have service,” Nesta grumbled, reaching for her phone to let Feyre know what had happened and they’d be upstairs as soon as they were free.
“And each other,” Cassian responded. He pulled out his own phone, fingers flying across the keyboard as he sent his own text, before he sighed and sat down on the ground. “Come on. Come sit with me.”
“I’d rather not,” she told him pointedly. Maybe he didn’t care about the state of his clothes, but she wasn’t showing up to this party with a wrinkle on her if she could help it. “Who knows the last time these floors were cleaned.”
“Not to worry,” he replied, a smirk forming on his full lips as he patted his thigh. “I have a seat for you right here.”
“Get your head out of the gutter,” she snapped, her cheeks heating despite herself. “I wouldn’t come near you if my life depended on it.”
“Ouch. I’m not up to your standards?”
“Your personality certainly leaves much to be desired.”
“Is this you finally admitting that I’m hot?”
“What? Absolutely not.”
“Come on, Nes. It won’t hurt you to admit you think I’m attractive.”
“I don’t have to admit anything.”
“The lady doth protest too much, I think.”
“I’m protesting just the right amount, thank you very much.”
“Look, I’ll even go first so you don’t have to. I think you’re gorgeous.”
Nesta crossed her arms and refused to acknowledge how Cassian’s compliment made her want to preen a little. “Whatever.”
“That’s a weird way to say ‘thank you,’ but okay,” Cassian said. At Nesta’s unimpressed stare, he just sighed and looked at her in exasperation. “Come on, Nesta. As hot as it is looking up at you from down here, I know your feet have to be hurting a little in those shoes. It won’t kill you to sit, will it?”
“Fine,” she finally caved, pulling off her heels and sliding down as gracefully as she could manage onto the floor. She wasn’t sitting right next to him, but they were close enough that she could’ve reached out and touched him if she wanted. “But only because my feet were starting to hurt a little.”
“See? I told you it wouldn’t be so bad,” he told her. He wasn’t even gloating; he actually seemed earnest for once, and she hated that she liked it. “So. Tell me about yourself.”
“This isn’t a job interview,” she replied with a roll of her eyes.
“Maybe I just want to learn more about you,” he responded, raising his eyebrows at her. She was sitting close enough to him that she noticed a thin scar running through his right eyebrow, of course only serving to make him more attractive. “You ever think about that?”
“No.” She didn’t have a witty retort better than that, so kept it simple. “Is this just some ploy to force me to ask you questions back?”
“A guy can’t just want to pass the time with conversation?” he asked. “We’re stuck in here until further notice. If we’re not gonna pass the time the old fashioned way, conversation is the next best thing.”
Nesta begrudgingly admitted to herself that Cassian had a point. She decided it wasn’t worth addressing his comment about the old-fashioned way and said, “Fine. But I’m going first.”
“Women should always come first,” Cassian told her with a smirk, “so go right on ahead, sweetheart.”
“Why do you always try to rile me up so much?” she asked, cutting straight to the point.
“Because I like seeing you get all worked up,” he answered. “If you seriously told me to fuck off, I’d stop, but… something tells me you like this just as much as I do.”
“Keep deluding yourself,” she replied, refusing to acknowledge how much she liked the sound of his low laughter.
“I plan to,” he told her with a wink. “If you don’t like it, why do you let me flirt with you so much?”
“You call that flirting?” Nesta fired back, snorting.
“That’s light work,” Cassian retorted just as quickly. He shifted closer to her, their thighs pressing together through the fabric of their clothes. “You couldn’t handle the real deal.”
“I find that hard to believe,” she scoffed. She’d seen the way he’d flirted with women in the past, and she hadn’t exactly impressed by the material then.
“Oh yeah?” he asked nonchalantly. Almost too nonchalantly, but she was too invested in seeing what he’d do next to stop him job. “Let me hit you with some of my material, then.”
“Fine,” she agreed. “Do you worst.”
Nesta watched as Cassian studied her openly for a few moments, clearly deciding what he was going to do next. The elevator was quiet except for the sounds of their breathing, and the longer they sat there, the more the anticipation started to build for her. Was he going to be silly, or was he going to take this seriously?
“Hey,” Cassian eventually said, leaning in to tuck a flyaway strand of hair behind her ear. “What’s a woman like you doing in an elevator like this?”
Nesta wanted to laugh at his lame joke, but suddenly she could hardly breathe from the way he was looking at her. He looked like he wanted to eat her alive, and damn her body for responding like she was going to let him. The air between them was so charged that her heart was beating at a gallop, and when those hazel eyes dipped down to her lips and back a few times in a quick succession, she knew with absolute certainly that he was going to kiss her and that she wanted him to. She wet her lips, more than ready for him to do it, watching in what felt like slow motion as he leaned in and—
And then the elevator suddenly roared back to life.
Nesta felt like she’d been sprayed with cold water as the tension between them snapped. She blinked and jerked back, wondering what the hell had come over her to make her want to kiss Cassian, hardly noticing as his hand awkwardly fell away from her face. She scrambled to stand up and put her shoes back on while steadily avoiding his gaze, the urge to run suddenly overwhelming.
“Nesta—” Cassian began, but then the elevator dinged! as it got to the top of the building and she was halfway down the hallway.
Nesta was absolutely not going to think about what had almost happened inside that elevator, and as she put as much distance between her and Cassian as she could manage, she could’ve sworn she head a soft, disappointed sigh.

WIP Wednesday
Maybe sharing a scene from my newest wip with you folks will make me feel excited for it again. Let’s try it! Enjoy!
Warnings: swearing, sex mention
Hiccup was scared. He was scared out of his mind.
His moon’s blood had stopped. At first, he’d thought it was a blessing from the gods. His moon’s blood always made him feel strange, like this body wasn’t truly his. So, he’d just gone with it. No moon’s blood? Fine. Better for him in the long run.
But then came the cramping and the tiredness and the back aches. The tiredness and back aches were the worst symptoms, and he found himself napping a lot, or dozing off when he was supposed to be working on something for a mission against the Dragon Hunters, or a new invention. He’d fallen asleep at the breakfast table too!
The back aches he hadn’t told anyone about, even though all he wanted was a nice massage. It was all lower back pain, and it made flying unbearable sometimes.
Granted, he hadn’t told his friends about any of this.
Well, there was one friend he’d told, of course. He couldn’t hide anything from Toothless. There was no point in trying, even if he wanted to.
But now, Hiccup had noticed something new.
There was a bulge in his tummy. He sat in his hut—alone save for Toothless—with his tunic pulled up, just staring. It was more noticeable when he sat down verses when he was standing, but it was still there.
He poked at it gingerly, as if it was going to spring out at him. Nothing happened, of course. He kept poking around, completely unsure of what was going on.
Very suddenly, Hiccup couldn’t breathe.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no. Gods, oh gods. No. Freya, please. No!
Now he sat with one hand on his abdomen, the other hand in his hair, digging his nails into his scalp. Breaths came in and out too fast to be of use to him. He couldn’t see straight and everything was blurry. Panic and dread like nothing he’d ever felt before ate him up from the inside out.
Toothless caught on quick. He pawed at Hiccup’s arm, rumbling in concern. Hiccup barely felt it. All he could feel was that pit of dread in his stomach.
Suddenly, Hiccup found himself down on his back on the bed, legs dangling over the sides. There was a giant weight on him and he wanted to scream, cry out for help, but he still couldn’t breathe. His chest hurt like someone had rammed a hammer into it.
His face was wet.
At first, he didn’t understand why, but then he realized that the weight on him was Toothless, and the wetness he was feeling was Toothless’ tongue.
He took his first real, gasping breath of air. It shuddered on its way in and out, but it was real. The buzzing in his head began to clear, and the dread wasn’t as all powerful as it had been moments ago.
He looked up at Toothless, who was cocking his head at him, trying to see if his method of calming him down had worked.
“Th-thanks, bud,” Hiccup rasped. He reached up a hand to scratch him under the chin. His fingers trembled.
Now Toothless was giving him a look that clearly was asking him to explain things. Why had he started panicking like that? He deserved to know.
“I… I don’t know,” Hiccup said. “I mean… I guess I do. I just… Fuck, I don’t get it.”
Toothless got off of him and let him sit up. Hiccup put his head in his hands. He felt shaky all over.
“I think…”
He didn’t want to voice it. Voicing it would make it more real. Though, it wasn’t as if that small bulge in his abdomen didn’t exist. It absolutely did. Unless of course he was going crazy from stress, but he didn’t think that was what was happening.
Hiccup looked hopelessly at Toothless. “I think I’m pregnant.”
Toothless cocked his head. Hiccup made a cradling motion with his arms.
“Baby,” he said, for Toothless’ benefit. “Here.” He pointed at the bulge.
Toothless licked his hand, cooed.
“But it doesn’t make sense.” Hiccup said. “I… I haven’t… you know… had sex with anyone.”
He was staring down at the bulge again. He didn’t know if talking was making him feel better or worse. He was telling Toothless the truth. There was no reason to lie to him.
As far as Hiccup could remember, he hadn’t done anything that could conceive a child. He was a virgin. The most action he’d ever had was with his own hand.
Hiccup didn’t know who to go to about this. There was no point in going to Gothi. He knew his own body. He didn’t need her to confirm that he was pregnant. He couldn’t go to his father, who would just start asking questions. His friends?
Though, they’d ask a lot of questions too. He doubted they would have answers.
But then who would have answers? Who would know what had happened or why this was happening?
Hiccup wasn’t very religious, but, he decided it was time to pray.

0095: Marvel Premiere #6
Cover Date: January 1973 On-Sale Date: October 24, 1972
For this issue, the fill-in artist if Frank Brunner. It gives us a glimpse into the near future when Englehart and Brunner take over as the regular creatives for a decent length of time. Robert E. Howard continues to get credited with "featuring concepts created by" while Howard P. Lovecraft continues to be ignored despite being the stronger influence. There's an interesting first. Doc purposely kills not one, but two villains in this issue.
Picking up directly from the previous issue, Ebora is closing in on Doc who's trapped in a crevasse. This isn't as hopeless a situation as we're led to believe. Doc has the plan of grabbing Ebora's trident out of her evil hands using that handy cloak of levitation. Clever Doc!
Ebora thinks she can leave Doc to drown in the rising waters. His legs are still trapped after all. Like many people in Doc's orbit, including Doc himself, they don't clean up their messes assuming that the circumstances will finish the job instead of doing it themselves. Well, Doc uses the trident to free himself and caption describes his leg muscles as powerful! I'll bet Clea is a happy girl!
As Doc swims away, a familiar shape starts to follow. The incompetent demon, Sliggith still wants a piece of him. Doc manages break the surface and gulp down some air right before Sliggith grabs one of his powerful legs and drag him under.
Doc, still under the influence of Starkesboro's evil aura that cancels out most of his magic (I guess the Vishanti's time limit was reached) has to turn to the physical again. Good thing he's got those powerful legs! Doc grabs the Sliggith cross and gives the lizard dude a swift bonk on the head. I'm guessing his arms are powerful too!
And there you have it. Doc holds Sliggith's gills shut. Doc straight out murders him.
Sliggith's death causes the next Gardner Fox weirdo to wake up and we are introduced to N'Gabthoth, the Shambler from the Sea.
The suction cup fingers are a nice touch! Meanwhile, Clea and Wong arrive at Starkesboro and immediately run into someone names Johnny Frames who followed his fiancé Deborah back to their hometown. Jonny appears to be Ethan Stoddard-lite. He distracts our supporting cast long enough for the town's lizard-folk to overwhelm them.
They chain the trio to an altar on a cliff and Ebora uses her cleavage to summon N'Gabthoth.
We change scene to Kaa-U where The Ancient One by the little shrunken people from Phantasm Shadowmen. The Ancient One thinks "I can't do anything to help myself here, I'll go check on Stephen." The old boy goes ghost and heads to Starkesboro. Doc is flying over the countryside and sees his underlings (and a stranger) about to get eaten by suction cup fingered thing.
The three really freak out, understandably so. In the nick of time Doc swoops down to the rescue! The cyclopean Shambler's eye beam is too much for Doc who comes crashing down. Ebora thinks she's got this nailed down. But Doc musters up enough mojo to break the captive trio's chains.
Wong, Clea, Johnny and the lizard-folk start beating the crap out of each other while Ebora cajoles N'Gabthoth to kill Doc. Doc thinks he's done. But this is the moment when The Ancient One, in ghost form, arrives and cancels out the towns naughty aura. He's filling in for the Vishanti. With full power, the Shambler isn't much more of a challenge than Sliggith and he runs away. The Ancient One gets particularly vicious.
Doc is like "Nah. Gotta find out where he's going. Then I'll kill him." The Shambler runs back to the Sliggith church and gets and adorably sinister chest hidden under the floorboards.
The two duke it out until Doc finally overwhelms him. Once N'Gabthoth is subdued, we get murder number two!
Doc reunites with his underlings to check out the cute chest. Johnny frets about losing Deborah after all the lizard-folk retreat to the hills. Then feels that his problems aren't really a big deal compared to the man in the cape who just murdered his opponent. Don't worry, when we return to this scene next issue Johnny will have disappeared as if he'd never existed. Doc, Clea and Wong check out the parchment in the adorable chest. It's got a drawing of Stonehenge on it. Guess where we're heading next!
This is a fun one. Gardner Fox displays his usual funky weird style here. He doesn't have the greatest grasp on Doc. Doc has said at least once, but probably multiple times that he is pledged never to take a life. He murders twice in this issue. I can maybe excuse Sliggith because Doc, lacking most of his power, saw no other way to stop him. It's still a lame excuse. For the Shambler, he was at full strength and could have banished him (see next issue for more of this.) Even The Ancient One, who's been a bit shady in the past, seems out of character with the vicious "kill him" attitude.
I don't know why Johnny Frames was introduced. He's completely unnecessary. He doesn't even consume any real estate to stretch the story. A copy of a character introduced two issues ago just gets shoehorned into the story. He even completely vanishes by the next issue. Perhaps Fox just wanted a normie in the story.
Overall, it's a good middle-arc story. We get a couple of one-shot monsters who are mildly interesting, but, fortunately, won't show up again because they're not that interesting. We get an ending that moves the plot. The story doesn't lag and has some good action. We get more evidence that even bereft of magic, Doc has the ability to handle the situation.

WIP Questionnaire
Thanks for the tag, @transthadymacdermot!!
What’s the first part of your WIP that you created?
The characters. They existed as deviantart ocs that I used to roleplay with in chatrooms before any semblance of a story existed. This was back in high school.
If your story was a TV show, what would the theme song/intro be?
I'll give a few examples here because there's a lot of songs I think fit the vibe of the story (I have a 4-hour long playlist of "soundtrack" songs)! All of these are based on pure vibes, not necessarily lyrics. For a TV show, I think a folk revival type song like "Over Again" by Stick in the Wheel or "Cannily Cannily" by Maddy Prior and Tim Hart would be sick. If it was a short instrumental intro song, an eerie tune like "More Bones to Sort" from the OTGW soundtrack or this song would work well. To get more general Rasputina is an artist whose overall sound is something that would work great for the story. If you don't know them they're a band that makes rock music with cellos and is very weird and goth about it.
What are your favorite characters that you made? Why?
I love them all, but right now I have to admit my favorite is Tristan. It's definitely partially because he's the most developed right now, but also because he's the reason I revived the story after dropping it almost 10 years ago. I remembered him and thought he had potential and fell in love with him all over again. Coming up with ideas for his arc and his backstory got me excited for the overarching story again, and I changed him from a side character to a main character. I have a lot of fun with his personality and I relate to him a lot on a personal level.
What other pieces of media do you think your fanbase would share?
Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow, Over the Garden Wall, Labyrinth, possibly Interview with the Vampire? and people who grew up with things like Hocus Pocus and A Series of Unfortunate Events. Maybe fans of Neil Gaiman? It's kind of hard to say though; I have no idea how the story would be marketed because it's..pretty weird lol.
What has been your biggest struggle with your WIP?
Not sure what the biggest of them all is, but my big three I guess would be plotting, research, and actually writing. I feel like I'm hitting my head on a wall when I try to outline story beats or whatever, so I think I'll just have to fly by the seat of my pants and plot as I go. Research also feels like a hurdle I need to get past because I want to base the story itself on actual mythology and folklore, and root the "real-world" parts of the story in the real historic regency period. Right now I know enough to share fun facts in a conversation, but in reality I don't know shit. I have a lot of work to do in that regard. Actually writing has been a challenge due to a combination of annoying factors including having very little free time in my life, executive dysfunction, and being? scared? of writing? because what if it comes out bad? Which I know is silly but it blocks me from writing a lot of the time nevertheless.
Are there any animals in your story? Talk about them!
Right now I'm thinking Crispin has a pet bat named Sparrow. Crispin named the bat Sparrow because he literally thought it was a sparrow, that being the only flying creature he knew of at the time. Now he knows better, but Sparrow is still Sparrow. I haven't thought much about it, but I think Crispin's keeping of a pet is one of the things that indicates he's different from his family/species, i.e. he experiences empathy and longs for companionship. The demon Tristan summons can shapeshift, and takes the form of many different creatures throughout the story.
How do your characters travel/get around?
Considering the time period, the options are limited. There's a lot of walking in this story, but also getting from place to place by carriage or cart. There's likely to be some horseback riding as well. In terms of the supernatural, Crispin can "teleport" himself from point A to point B using magic--but not very far. I still need to figure out the specifics of that though. Tristan is greatly aided in getting around by the demon he summoned, who transforms into a flying black steed Tristan can ride on.
What part of your WIP are you working on right now?
Right now I'm bouncing around and writing snippets of scenes that come to mind/interest me most. I'm considering everything experimental at the moment, and not committing to anything actually being in the final novel. This is helping me get over my fear of writing, and I like it because sometimes I end up liking what I write more than I thought I would. I also *might* write the story in novella form first, try out some things with that, learn from it, and then expand and/or rewrite it as a full novel. Other than that I'm researching and brainstorming and drawing (which is part of my process)!
What aspects (tropes, maybe?) will you think draw your audience in?
Hmmm I think the fact it's a dark fantasy/horror story and the fact it's set in the regency period will attract people. The regency period and fantasy are both really popular right now (as far as I can tell). Also the fact that it has found family, which seems to be a popular trope. The fact it has queer characters might be appealing too. Other draws might be the Halloween aspect, and the deal with the devil trope. And if anyone likes enemies to friends and twist villains. There's also heavy use of gothic tropes and subverting them/combining them with folk horror tropes. Regency media (cough cough Jane Austen) tropes will also go under the knife of subversion.
What are your hopes for your WIP?
I hope to make it a published novel! Ideally traditionally published, but who knows if that'll happen lol. I also want the book to be illustrated, and to illustrate it myself. Besides that, I'd love to do some comics featuring the characters and maybe even short animations. (She said as if she had endless free time...)
Tagging: @ceph-the-ghost-writer, @finchmomentwrites, and @kaylinalexanderbooks !
#well twist villain might not be completely the right term but..#tag game#writing#writeblr#tristan#crispin#sorry if anyone already did this!

Merry Belated Christmas everyone!! Hope everyone has had a sliver of something nice this holiday season — If not yet, then let this fic be it! This piece is part of the Hey! You! Rent is Due! series that I’m currently writing on AO3. You can definitely read this without reading any of the prior stories but if you want more of these two shenanigans, you can read the stuff over there (and advisably after the 1st fic but before the 2nd!!). Enjoy 🫶🏾
Christmas was a rather difficult time for Reiner.
Having always spent them with just him and Karina dwindled the experience over the years and turned the holiday sour for him.
Not like Karina didn’t attempt to make them special; she absolutely tried her best to make young Reiner the warmest meals and bow the cutest few presents — but the Christmas’ he watched on TV and heard from his friends just didn’t match up with the ones he lived, hence the mild distaste towards it.
However, now that he was currently infatuated with you and had you as the every figment of his daydream thoughts, Christmas was sounding like a better concept than it did most years.
“You doing anything over the Christmas period?”
Reiner was currently posted up within your small kitchenette, the small of his back pressed against the countertop as he watched you cook — half an orange segment occupying his hands.
“Not really.” You neutrally answered.
“How come?”
Taking in a deep breath, you continued to season the food. You shook a shake of cardamom into the pan before answering the man.
“I’d normally spend it with my folks but the family all live kinda far out and scattered everywhere. Plus even if they were to fly in, most flights get cancelled this time of the year anyway so it probably won’t be possible.” You said, your focus still occupied on sautéing food.
The blonde popped an orange piece into his mouth but moved off the counter to stand behind you.
“So you’ll be spending it alone?”
You shrugged before briefly glancing up at him.
“I guess so, yeah.”
Reiner hummed in thought.
Even he, who wasn’t the biggest Christmas fan, felt a twinge in his heart at the fact that you were going to spend it alone. He definitely knows how holidays can bring about a cloud of lonely melancholy and so he really did feel compelled at your circumstance.
Reiner placed a singular orange slice in front of your mouth and so you took the initiative to lean forwards and receive the fruit from his hand. Reiner then put the last few in his own mouth before snaking his arms around your waist. As soon as he stood over you, a heavy whaft of steam from the food softly billowed over his face.
“I would really like to spend Christmas with you. If family was visiting at least then my mother would be distracted enough for me to slip out.”
Swallowing the orange in your mouth and then shaking your head, you made a noise of alarmed surprise.
“Nope. Don’t even think about that. As much as I’d love to see you, it’d be too risky.”
“But you won’t be spending it with anyone.” He said a lot more softly.
You could only pout at how Reiner’s concern touched your heart. Even without the two of you being in a relationship, he still held you in high consideration and treated you well.
“I know, and I’m grateful that you’re thinking about me but there’s nothing we can do about it, Rei. It’s not like I could come see you or you me. It’s just how things have turned out this year.”
The man didn’t say much else. You can tell he was pondering your thoughts but the last thing you wanted him to feel for you was sympathy. Slightly leaning into him, you pressed your head against the expanse of his chest.
You didn’t want him thinking about this too hard.
“It’s fine Rei, really. It won’t be too bad. I can finally just have a relaxing day to myself. Make myself a mini roast, call a few friends and family or maybe even watch a service online, we’ll see.”
Even if he didn’t agree with the outcome, you raised a valid point. It’s not like he could invite you round to his; Karina was still in the unknown about the two of you's ‘relationship’ and Christmas was probably not the best time to reveal to his mother that he was fucking her tenant.
He could try sneaking out and pay you a quick visit but that’d mean leaving his mother alone for a while and the last thing he’d want her to feel is abandonment on Christmas.
The only thing Reiner could think to do was buy you a gift — Which is practically a no brainer concerning that’s all he ever seems to know how to do when it comes to pleasing you. Still, the man understands the magic of Christmas is usually accounted for on the day itself so if he intended to do this somewhat right then he needed to think of something innovative.
Bending down to kiss the smooth skin of one of your exposed shoulders, Reiner rubbed his hand down your arm as he echoed your last statement.
“Yeah…I guess we will see.”
Christmas day rolled around and as predicted, nothing too fancy happened for you.
You got dressed into your favourite jumper and pleated skirt, video called a few family and friends, had your mini version of a Christmas dinner and even sat through an hour of an online Christmas service. You’d made what you could out of the day and you were okay with that. Nothing too exciting.
That was, until it had just gone past six and you had an unexpected knock at your door.
Opening up, you were met with absolutely the last faces you thought you’d see today.
“Merry Christmas!”
“Me—Merry…Christmas? Wait, Karina, what are you doing here?”
There in your doorway stood none other than your landlord Karina, and behind her, her son Reiner. The two stood there with wide smiling faces.
“Oh, me and Reiner just took a gamble and thought we’d pay you a visit for the holidays. Didn’t want you spending it alone or anything if that was the case so we popped round! Sorry for not notifying you beforehand.”
You watched as the woman invited herself in, her son lagging behind her. You quickly glanced backwards at Karina before turning round to face Reiner who was still standing in the doorway.
You mouthed ‘what are you doing here?!’ in mild panic but the blonde only chuckled as he handed you a small cheap bag.
“Merry Christmas to you too! I hope Christmas day isn’t too bad of a time to check up on that leaky pipe you emailed me about?” He said in a much louder but warning tone.
You furrowed your eyebrows.
A leaky pipe was definitely not an issue you mentioned to the man. Especially since he’d already come round for the ‘bathroom maintenance’ he forgot last time. But per his blown eyes and strained expression, you started to understand what was going on.
Reiner must have used the excuse of a maintenance job to pay you a visit without making it suspicious. That must have been the only way he could think of how to come and see you on Christmas without it looking suspicious.
With an air of amusement, you took the bag from him, your smile coy.
“Thank you so much for the gift. If I had known you were coming, I would have brought you something too.”
Slightly opening the gift bag, you could make out a card and a small bag of chocolate. A standard and inauspicious gift for a landowner to give to their tenant — Definitely not Reiner’s style.
It was almost as if the man knew the very thing you were thinking regarding he slightly bent himself down to your height to whisper in your ear.
“This is from the both of us. You’re getting your real present from me in a bit.” Reiner quickly pecked your lips with a sweet kiss, a small squeal leaving your mouth at his boldness.
As he pulled away and walked further inside, Karina turned around, just about missing your risky displays of affection with a face displaying mild concern.
“Reiner told me you had a leaky pipe in the bathroom? I know it may seem a bit strange but we thought we might at least come round and fix it today, seeing as it’s Christmas and all. I really do hope it’s not too much of an inconvenience.”
Shaking your head, you dispelled her concerns.
“No, no, not at all, Karina. In fact I’m grateful you thought of me at such a time. Is Christmas usually busy for you?” You tried to make small talk as you proceeded to shut the door behind you and placed the gift down on the small table near the entrance.
Karina gave you a complicated look.
“Rarely ever. Unless family are in town it’s usually just me and Rei so I guess it’s nice we get to see another face.”
With a polite smile, you had the intention to answer but before you could, Reiner spoke up.
“Okay, I’m gonna go check on that plumping work.”
There was a hurried edge to the man’s voice, a sense of desperate urgency as he gravitated towards your bedroom door.
Both you and Karina looked towards Reiner, unsure of what he was rushing for but you didn’t have to wonder for long concerning he raised his eyebrows at you. You however didn’t miss the slight smile on his face.
“Could you show me where the problem is?” He reiterated in your direction.
It took a few seconds for you to realise what he was hinting at but once the penny dropped, your face lit up.
“Yes! The leaky pipe! Sure, sure.”
You took a few steps in the direction of your bedroom but stopped mid way. Remembering you had more than just one guest, you looked back towards your landlord. You smiled sweetly at the blonde woman who was currently seated on your couch.
“Karina. Please, make yourself comfortable. We won’t be long!” You mused.
Like you had to tell her. Karina was already enamoured with the Christmas special that was being played on the TV to pay you much attention.
“Sure, dearest.” She absentely said, her concentration fixed to the screen.
As you turned back to the direction of your room, you realised that the door was now wide open but Reiner was nowhere in sight. Assuming he had already invited himself into your ensuite, you walked into your room unaware.
However, before you could even step properly into the room, your bedroom door had shut behind you and a pair of large yet familiar hands tied themselves around your waists.
With a gleeful smile, you turned around within Reiner’s arms, your first port-of-call being to finally get your full kiss from the man.
“Hey.”
Reiner mumbled into the kiss as he lightly pushed your body against the wall. There was no delay in affection as he kissed you back with just as much vigour.
“Hey.” You muffled back.
“Missed you.”
“Saw me two days ago.”
“Still wan’ad to come.”
“Didn’t have to.” You mewled hungrily into the kiss.
“But I wanted to.” He retorted.
Your arms reached upwards to cling around the blonde’s neck as his hands came down to hook underneath your ass and lift one of your legs around his hip.
“I really wanted to see you. So, so bad.” He muttered into your lips but more to himself.
A hum left your throat to show you understood.
Reiner’s intentions with you were no secret as you could feel the hard pressing of his dick print against your legs. However, this was such an awkward time to do anything inherently sexual, especially concerning it wasn’t just you two in the apartment.
Momentarily gaining a period of common sense, you caressed the short hairs on the back of Reiner’s neck before voicing your distress.
“Reiner, we can’t. Your mother is literally next door and the walls in here aren’t the thickest.” You shortly inhaled as the man began to eagerly kiss some of the sensitive skin of your neck.
Reiner’s hands raised underneath your skirt as he fondled the fat of your ass. Giving it a squeeze, he simultaneously took a deep breath, clearly enjoying the scented perfume you had used previously that morning.
“Well you’re just gonna have to keep it down, aren’t you?” He eventually replied back.
A scandalous gasp left your throat as Reiner’s hands slid downwards and squeezed at your lips through your underwear.
“I-I don’t know if I can do that.” You struggled to say as you rolled your head against your bedroom wall.
Even though you wanted to be the voice of reason, Reiner’s eagerness for you was more convincing. As the blonde slipped the cotton of your panties to the side, he lightly delved his fingers past your pussy lips and fondled with the gathering slick. At the cool touch, your eyes flickered out of sync. After only a handful of encounters, he was already becoming well versed in knowing what actions turned you on the easiest.
“C’mon. Promise me.” He cooed.
A struggling breath of hot air left your mouth. You kept your hand on Reiner’s head to keep his face within the crook of your neck. You didn’t want him to see how blissed out you already were.
“Rei…” You breathed. The man made a throaty sound in initial reply.
“I said, promise me.”
You heard him, loud and clear, but the sensation of Reiner lightly exploring his fingers within the warm flesh of your pussy, and the glittering brushes over your clit just felt too good. How could you promise him silence when you could already feel your throat wanting to open up with wanton joy?!
Still, Reiner was adamant you made that adjustment and you only realised that once he paused the movements he was kneading into your cunt. On instinct, you tried to rub yourself down onto the man’s fingers.
“Nu uh, Not until you promise me, baby. You’ve got to promise that you’ll keep it down.”
“But Reiner…”
You didn’t even get to finish your plea. Reiner tutted as he pulled his hand away from your cunt whilst simultaneously pulling his head up to give you a stern look.
This was just ridiculous! Wasn’t it him who couldn’t stay away from you in the first place? So desperate that he risked bringing his mother, your landlord, to his sneaky link with him?! Why was he now apprehending you from what you rightfully deserved?
With a whine and a flung back head against the wall, you had no choice but to give in.
“Okay! Okay, I promise!” You hissed.
“Good girl.”
Reiner didn’t bring his fingers back towards your already dribbling pussy. Instead, he brought them up towards his own lips and suckled on his glistening fingers, his eyes not leaving yours.
You felt a heat pool to your lower regions as a second heartbeat developed.
For such a serious looking man, Reiner definitely knew how to work his way around that physical presumption. However, looking past his stoic expression, you could tell that even he was desperate to get a taste of you.
Every mask eventually cracked.
With a striking boldness, you removed Reiner’s fingers from his mouth, a slick line of saliva connecting the two before you erased it with your own lips and kissed him. This time you did so without apprehension and ground yourself forward into him and Reiner’s hand firmly gripped your leg around his waist again but not without pouring a hungry growl into you first.
“I need to be inside of you.”
Everything was always messy with the two of you. You’ve only fucked four times before now but one thing you both discovered is that there was barely any room for subtlety.
“Then fuck me, Reiner.” Your hand came down to cup at the growing length within his jeans. “Like honestly, just do it already.”
He didn’t need to be told twice.
Letting go of you, Reiner turned you around before splaying his large hand over the expanse of your jumper and bending you over. There was no time wasted as he lifted the bottom of your skirt upwards and then shucked down your damp panties, letting the material pool by your inner knees.
Automatically your hands splayed out in front of you as you leaned them onto the wall to support yourself, your cheek squishing against the surface. Even from where you were, you could hear the jingles and words that played from the TV in the living room.
You couldn’t help but wander how much Karina could hear from her position.
The shuckling of Reiner’s belt clanked from behind you.
“You want me to prep or should you?” He asked.
“Already done.”
There was a hesitation in Reiner’s actions as he gave you a perplexed look. Him visiting you today was clearly a surprise to you and not one he’d previously hinted at. And Reiner himself was a man who always liked to be prepared, but even this was beyond his skill set.
Slightly turning your head round, you questioned the hold up with a face of confusion.
“You’re saying you’ve already prepped yourself?” Reiner reiterated.
“Yeah.”
Reiner blinked thrice at your reply, his face seemingly blank but you had come to realise that that specific face was one of immense and thorough thinking.
With a seductive laugh, you reached your hand over your ass to innocuously gape open your pussy with only two your fingers, displaying the inner pretty pink flesh for Reiner to see in all its glory.
“Why you so surprised, Reiner? What, you never had a bit of a Christmas jerk before? Played with any toys on the day of new gifts?”
Like the attraction to a siren call, Reiner found himself plunging two fingers inside of your second heart before he even realised what was doing. A guttural moan slipped from your mouth but you quickly had to shut it due to the promise you made to Reiner and the company on the other side of the wall.
“Fuck.” The blonde whispered as his fingers etched out the expanded blueprint of your walls.
You couldn’t help but to continue looking back at him with doey eyes. Even though your neck was starting to crane, the drunk look on Reiner’s face was all the more worth it.
As the blonde bent his fingers upwards and pulled his fingers out, he brought forwards your natural nectar, the gel like honey once again staining his hands.
“Oh, look at this perfect pussy of yours.” He said in a hush voice. “Already dribbling and crying for my cock to do some real damage to it, huh?”
And you knew he wasn’t lying because you could feel the slight press of his naked dick caress against your ass — He was stiffening by the second! It was clear Reiner wasn’t going to go easy on you just because his mother was in the other room. You eagerly pressed backwards into him as a desperate high-pitched whine left your throat but the man initially resisted.
“Hold on. Patience.” He said. “God, you’re such a needy whore…”
The curse left his mouth as he purposely brushed his dick over the slit of your cunt. The juicy nature of it made it easy for his helmet to slot pass the crevice, your hole already trying to suck him in.
“Please, Rei. I need you. Really need you to fill my whore pussy up.” You mumbled, finally letting your head turn and cheek naturally flatten against the wall.
A hubristic hum left the blonde's throat. You could tell this scenario was all going to his head but you didn’t mind. As long as it meant you’d get a better fuck outta him, you didn’t mind.
“I guess I could grant you at least one Christmas wish.” He chided.
With ease, Reiner’s large hands came to split your ass cheeks apart, giving himself better access to your glistening pussy lips as he dutifully plunged his dick into you. It was evident the crunchy moan leaving his mouth at the introduction to your warmness was genuine.
In mirror to him, a fluttering gasp spilled from your mouth but you instantly had to hold a hand over it to cover up the sound. You could already tell that the both of you were going to have an issue with keeping the noise down.
But God, even with the amount of self stretching you had done earlier, nothing prepared you for the girthy taunt that Reiner’s big cock made as he sunk into you. It expanded you, pushed your limits. Yet, you took it like a champ and allowed him to split you open — your pussy swallowing him whole.
As testament to how well you were accustomed to him, Reiner found it easy to calculate his pace and slowly pump himself in and out of your pussy.
The sight of his length when he first pulled out of you almost melted his brain. The way your insides had already wet his girth after one plunge was insane! His dick, slick with one encounter of your honeyed cum, was drenched.
“God, I missed this pussy so much.”
He breathed as he took a hold of your hips and started to fasten the pace at which he pumped into you.
If you were in a better mindset you would have cheekily reminded him how it hadn’t even been 48 hours since he last had you, but you couldn’t because you were currently squished up against the wall, your lips slack as you gurgled out inconsolable words of delight.
Due to the force of his actions, Reiner had to keep raising your skirt over the small of your back as it kept falling down over your ass. In the end, he bunched up the cloth in his hand and held it against your back which ultimately messed up the pleats. Not like he cared — all it did was give him a better view of where the two of you connected.
“Shit, if only you could see how well you were taking me. Saw how your slutty pussy easily eats my dick. Best Christmas gift I could ever receive.”
Reiner’s skin started to pat against your ass within a steady rhythm which caused light slapping sounds to play throughout the room. All you could do was let out small puffs of air, some of them accidentally coming out as kitten-like mewls.
At that, Reiner grunted disapprovingly.
“You know I usually love to hear you but remember the promise you made me, right? How we haven’t got the apartment all to ourselves at the moment?”
You attempted to nod but the movement seemed miscellaneous in comparison to the thrusts Reiner was bumping into you.
Like you could even say anything in reply — the sensations dancing throughout your body were too great to fight against. All you could do was bite your bottom lip to try and stop yourself from letting out too much.
If you didn’t know the blonde any better, you’d think this situation was turning him on.
“Fuuuuck, fuck fuck.”
All you could do was whine into the plaster wall, your hand coming up to permanently mask over your mouth as your moans were growing too great.
“Mhm. Keep quiet for me, baby. You don’t wanna get caught. That’s the last thing we want, huh.” He panted.
By now Reiner was slamming himself into you, his grip on your waist firm as he flung his own head backwards in pleasure.
Everything was so loud. Reiner’s low moans, the slapping of your skin and even your body mutedly banged into the wall. There was no way Karina was sitting just over 8 feet away and wasn’t aware of what was going on — No chance! Nothing about what the both of you were doing was discreet but there was a small part of you that didn’t care.
Maybe, just maybe, getting caught wasn’t so bad.
Even when you thought it couldn't get any better, Reiner had slightly altered his angle and suddenly your eyes were rolling into the back of your head.
“Fuck, yes! Righ’ there, Rei. Righ there, righ’ there, righ’ thereeeee.”
The way Reiner was hitting that gooey spot right inside of you with perfect precision was ludicrous. That thick cock of his just kept brushing over it again and again and again and again!
“Ah, shit, baby. I’m close.” He mumbled.
Reiner’s strokes were so deliciously firm. He knew what he was doing as he chose to dig you out like this, your inner walls clenching around his girth.
You hadn’t even time to register his impending release as your strength was too fucked to even hold yourself up as your body began to slide down the wall.
As one of his arms came from underneath you to hold you up via your stomach, Reiner leaned forwards so that he could whisper his next words into your ear, his hips continuing to piston into your weeping hole.
“Lemme give you…another Christmas gift, yeah? Lemme give you the gift of my seed. I’ll — fuck — I’ll pour my seed inside of you and…and fill up that empty womb of yours.”
By now you were merely reduced to a whimpering mess. There was no point trying to cover your mouth since you barely had any control over your body.
“Pleaaase…pleaaase.” Was all you could muster out.
Reiner pumped a few more strokes into you, his pants heavy as he was still bent over your back, before his hips stuttered still. You felt the hot cumshots splurge your insides before you mentally realised Reiner had orgasmed.
As the semen vandalised your insides, a creamy moan left your mouth as you could feel your womb being filled up. Pump after the pump, Reiner emptied his load into your stomach, the feeling so addictive as you could only dream yourself being stuffed more.
Reiner on the other hand could only let his eyes roll as he leaked his white cum into your baby pink cunt.
The both of you struggled to stay on your feet as you were so blacked out within your sexual bliss. With knees nearly buckling and heavy pants exchanging, you had both briefly forgotten that you weren’t home alone.
“You okay?” Reiner asked, his voice slightly hoarse.
Briskly wiping your mouth and chin with the side of your hand, you nodded.
“Yeah…yeah, I’m good.”
The feeling of Reiner pulling out was never your favourite thing to experience. Not only because the absence of his warmth was felt but more so because the gaping feeling his girth left was detrimental.
A sharp ‘fuck’ left your mouth once Reiner had pulled out with a plop. He however found your reaction amusing.
As you finally stood yourself up, you hadn’t even time to stretch out your back before you were spun around and pulled into a kiss. At first, you were uptight about the impromptu display of affection, but you couldn’t be displeased for long. It was safe to say you kissed Reiner back just as willingly.
“Merry Christmas.” He mumbled into your kiss. It was almost mesmerising how you could still taste yourself on him, the wet muscle of his mouth addicting.
“Merry Christmas to you too, asshole.” You chided back, unable to stop yourself from smiling into the kiss as you felt Reiner’s hand reach down beneath your skirt and languidly attempt to scoop his leaking cum back inside of you.
The exchange between the both of you would have gone on for longer but unexpectedly, there was a knock on the door.
Both you and Reiner froze, unsure whether you heard right. Exchanging looks, you both started to move away from each other in fear of being caught. It looks like you had let your guard down for too long as already, the door handle was pushing downwards.
You both gasped in shock, muted swears flying out of your mouths as you tried to pull yourselves together. As Reiner buckled up his jeans and you pulled your panties over your leaking cum-filled cunt, Karina entered the room.
Peeping her head around the door with concern, the woman looked between the both of you.
“Everything alright? It sounded tricky in here.”
You felt your blood run cold.
Did she know?!
To cover up your anxiety, you sweetly smiled at your landlord as you sat yourself down on your bed and squeezed your legs together — trying your best to stop the drizzling of Reiner’s cum down your legs.
Unsure of how to answer, you looked towards her son. Luckily, the blonde man spoke up in the defence of you both.
“Everything’s totally fine, Ma. Apparently the piping was situated around the walls of the bedroom too so I had to sort that out. Was a bit tough but we got there in the end. Might as well have been a Christmas miracle.”
Seeing Reiner’s open expression, the lady invited herself more inside of your room.
“Oh, well isn’t that wonderful?!” Karina clasped her hands together as her expression illuminated.
You thought she would at least end the conversation there but she had instead turned to direct a question towards you.
“By the way, I forgot to ask. How’s the job search going?! Your payments are all coming in okay so I’m assuming you’ve been able to find work?”
You heard Reiner clear his throat.
“Ah, the job search, yes.” You briefly glanced in the blonde man’s direction, your legs clamping even tighter.
That was another thing you were currently keeping from Karina. Not only were you and her son newly acquainted fuckbuddies, but Reiner has ever so kindly decided to pay your rent in the time being.
He doesn’t even know why he ended up agreeing to it, but something about you made Reiner feel the need to offer the helping hand.
“The redundancy from my old place was really generous so I’m good for a while but I still haven’t been able to find anything yet.” You lied, your skin feeling itchy with sweat.
Karina gave an understanding nod.
“That sounds plausible but hopefully you find a new occupation soon. You’re a smart girl, you should be able to get somewhere. Or maybe a sugar daddy — either one.”
Your face made an exclamatory expression at her words. Not having expected her to say that you could only hide your mouth behind your hand.
Reiner on the other hand gave a verbal chide, his cheeks reddening.
“I—Ma!”
“What? I’m only being honest. This is girl stuff. She knows what I’m talking about.”
Karina gave you a light hearted wink, as if to be conveying a secret girl code that Reiner wasn’t in the know about, but all you could do was awkwardly laugh back as you fidgeted on top of your duvet — Reiner’s cum now staining your panties.
My, oh my. If only your landlord knew.
