Hey there Ava, I wanted to say something in regards to those posts you recently made about your characters and art as a whole. Apologies in advance for the essay ahead, I had a lot to say and I really feel passionate about this because, hey, I've been there and I don't want to see you discouraged over this. First I want you to know that you aren't alone- when I was your age and still learning the ropes of art I felt exactly the same. All my friends around me what felt like suddenly jumped in their skills and only perfected their characters (design and story/personality-wise) while I sat stagnated in both. My characters were one-dimensional and I had little to no understanding of the major principles of art. And without a doubt, it is discouraging because they're being noticed for it and I hadn't made any ground in improvement at the time. This is a horribly common feeling especially for those without any access to formal training/teaching and beginners alike. Most of my friends lived in places where they could easily gain professional guidance and tools (usually through college, many countries allow you to jump to college while still in mid-teen years onwards), while I remember having to teach myself everything and struggling to learn even the most basic digital programs. Neither my high school or college (that I went to art classes specifically for, even the introductory ones) ever went in-depth when teaching the basics, and so generally I never had that strong foundation all my friends built onto. It's painful, but it's going to be okay because there are ways to help this. Now real quick, I'm going to go ahead and address what you were saying about your characters and art. Being completely honest, you were one of the first people I followed when joining this site, and I've really enjoyed seeing your work. While you may think that others would ignore your work over currently higher-skilled artists, I need you to know that there is a certain joy in watching someone find their way in a skill and grow within it. Drawing and designing characters (and yes, even writing them regarding their backstories/personalities) is a skill. For some, naturally they jump off and fly right away, with little to no friction. But for others? There may need to be a little more guidance and work. Some people also learn more slowly than others, and that's nothing to be ashamed of. You do not "suck" at these things. You just may need more supplementary sources to help guide your growth is all. That leads me into my next point;

When I said that you aren't alone in this, I don't just mean "I've been there". I also mean, there's an insane amount of free sources that are online you can use to push yourself forward. Pinterest has a lot of good references ranging from 'how to draw this' to 'something I can use for inspiration' and you can easily amass a huge collection for just about any of your drawing needs. Also YouTube! I stagnated in my art and designs for years, but when I started actively seeking out tutorials my skills slowly-- very slowly-- grew and I was able to not only learn new things but also build off of them from there on. Some of my favorite tutorial/art/design tips channels are: -Marc Brunet (short and sweet, easily digestible tutorials on drawing from a professional game artist turned art teacher. Just about anything drawing related is on his channel). -Brookes Eggleston - Character Design Forge (a channel specifically for improving character design (and a few tips on personality qualities as well) and some of the principles you can use to apply when designing). Both of these channels also have tips for the whole mental aspect of these things, which is very encouraging and helps when trying to get out of a mindset that may be hindering you and your progress, including artblock and feelings of inadequacy. I apologize again for the long ask, but I really hope this helps you in some way! Know that you're not in this journey alone and that with some time and a little bit of guidance, you will improve-- which I want to also say that it's much easier for others to see than for you to. At the end of the day, try to be a little more compassionate towards yourself, because it can only get better and I know you're doing your best. The fact that you're posting your art and characters online like this is already inspiring enough to many who are afraid to even start, and I genuinely mean that from experience. As scary as it is, maybe ask some of your friends or artists in general that you look up to for tips, most people are happy to provide insight on their work when asked politely- and definitely seek out some resources for yourself as well, those that I mentioned are without a doubt a good start. Before we begin, it's important to understand that Pinterest traffic is very high quality. According to insights published by Shopify, average order value for buyers coming from Pinterest is over $50 which is actually higher than any other social media network and 95% of Pinterest users usually use Pinterest to research for purchase before they actually go online and buy something. So this means that Pinterest traffic is high quality full of buyers, and he's definitely the type of traffic that you want to get to your website. Now I'm going to show you how to use Pinterest in a unique way using something called tailwind tribes. A tailwind is a software tool, but they have a free pricing tier, which is definitely more than enough for you to get started. If we're in the same niche, and I have 100 followers and someone else has 100 followers, why don't we just agree to share each other's content? Surely this way we can grow our following and get more traffic from each other's posts. Well, it turns out like that there already is something like that out there. That's exactly what that when tribes do. A tribe is a group of people who are all in the same niche for example in the dating niche weight loss niche or Internet marketing niche, and they all agreed to share each other's content. All these sharing is done by this tool called tailwind. So let's know down exactly how this traffic method works. First, you have to register a Pinterest business account. If you don't have one already, just head over to business.pinterest.com and create an account there. Then fill out your profile and make sure to put in the URL of your website, your profile is created. Now you need to complete your profile to make it look attractive and active. Here is exactly how you can do that. First create 10 to 20 boards, which are the sub-topics within your niche. For example, you can use guitars then your boards can be electric guitars, acoustic guitars, secondhand guitars, and so forth. Now you need to be 10 to 20 pin images. This is the words the marketplace for online learning on you to me, I learned how to grow my own into each of those boards to make them look filled out and complete. To do that, simply head over to Pinterest and type in the guitar into the Pinterest search bar. Find some images that look good and save them to the guitar board merged this process and save 10 to 20 pin images to each of your boards. Now your profile will no longer look empty and you can move on to the next step. Next, it's time to create pins for your own content. Then, take every post on your site to which you'd like to drive traffic from Pinterest and repeat the whole process. For example, you can see that I've arranged all the pins that link to posts on my website caffeinated blogger into a board called best of the caffeinated blogger. This will help you stay organized in the future. Okay, now you're ready to start driving traffic to your website. It's time to start using telling tribes This is very exciting, so keep reading. First, you'll need to sign up to tailwind free trial. You don't even need a credit card for that it actually allows you to publish 100 posts, which is more than enough to get started off the sign-up, fill out your profile and link your Pinterest account. Then click on the tribe's feature and select find the tribe. From here you can search for the tribes in your niche. For example, you can type in SEO and look through all the tribes in the SEO niche. When you find the tribe that looks good to you, you can request to join the tribe. Once you are accepted, you'll be able to nominate which of your content you would like other people to share. And you will be able to start sharing the post from other tribe members. Generally, the more post from others within the tribe you share on your profile, the more likely it will be that others will share your posts on their profile. That's how tailwind tribes work because tailwind actually keeps track of all the statistics. For example, you can see that my recent pin how to make money on YouTube good for shares within just a few days of me posting it in the tribe. So what does a good talent strategy look like? It's quite simple. Key Word Search For Increasing Traffic Most people agree that you need to apply anywhere between 30 to 50 pins a day, it's very easy to do via tailwind because you can schedule all of your pins days or week in advance. Ideally, you want to pin approximately 50% of your own post and 50% of the post from other members of your tribe that will ensure that you score a good number of loyalty points within the tribe and a lot of the members of the tribe will be very likely to pin your content on their profile. So that's it. That was strategy number one tribal traffic. Let's now move on to strategy number two, which I call the reverse beach method. The reverse beach method will help you increase your search engine rankings and get you more traffic. As you know well, Google search engine traffic is free and can be very targeted and very profitable. For such example, this is one of my niche websites. And it has received over 75,000 visitors from Google Search since it was started. The reverse beach method will help you improve your search engine rankings and get more traffic from Google search. Here's how it works. You already know that having backlinks is very important to increasing your rankings and getting traffic. Here is an interesting fact, when backlink analyzed for such relevant ranking factors that found the number one factor is the number of backlinks pointing to the particular page. So an individual page from a wicked domain with more links pointing to it can actually outrank a page from a stronger domain with fewer links pointing to it. That means that unless you've got an insanely powerful domain, you actually need to focus your efforts on building backlinks to your content to the individual pages by pitching your content to other sites. Here is how the normal beach process usually looks. You select your keywords, produce your content, and then you start contacting the owners of other sites and blogs and ask them to start linking to your content. Some people will even just passively waiting for such kind of links to magically appear, which rarely happens. In this normal pitch process. It's always extremely hard, hard to get responses from the people who are trying to beat your content to it's not uncommon to send 100 of these outreach emails and get zero replies it's discouraging. So here is how the reverse beach process actually works. And here is why it's much better than the normal beach process, we're basically flip the process, so let's break it down. The first step will be as per normal to find the keywords for which you want to produce your content. The keywords need to be selected so that you've got a reasonably good chance of actually ranking on page one for them. A third way to do that would be to use a free tool like KW find and generate your list of keywords KW finds that has a free pricing tier which is more than enough to get started. Let's go through an example. If you type in seed keyword into KW find that in this example, we're going to use the word blog KW finds that will go away and it will get a lot of information along with the anticipated difficulty of how hard it's going to be for you to rank for that particular keyword. In this example, KW finder is suggesting that the keyword blogging names will be quite an easy target to rank for. Okay, now we've got our keyword and it's time to move on to step two, starting the reverse pitch reverse beach is actually about studying the beach before we even create the post going with the previous example. Let's say you wanted to create an article about blog names, will call it something like 15 best ways to come up with a blog name with the reverse speech process. What we want to do is want to try to get agreement to backlinks even before we create the content. So how exactly does this work? Hey, would you like to link to an empty page? Well, not exactly like that, you will contact the owners of other websites or blogs, and you will ask them to contribute to the content before you created. And while you're doing it, you can plant an idea in their mind to link to your content at a later point in time once that content is actually created. In my experience, the strategy works great because you're going to be able to offer something that has a lot of value to them. First, you will need to identify good targets for your reverse beach. To do that will come the list of sites that we're going to be asking to contribute to our post I find that a list of about 30 sites works great to find these type of sites, you can use a free tool such as most toolbar, simply Google most toolbar and install it next head over to Google and type in a search query which is related to the topic of your blog posts, but does not directly compete with it. If our post is going about blog names. Then an example of a search query that you might type into Google is how to create a blog. Then in the top right of your screen, you will be prompted to log into your Ma's account or create one if you don't have one yet do that. And after logging in, repeat the search query. This time you will see search results and along with those search results, you will see some metrics such as domain authority and page authority. I recommend targeting sites which have domain name authority similar to yours slightly above or slightly below, now we ask them would be interested in submitting a tip for your roundup post or some kind of advice or input into the article. Increasing Traffic by Backlinks Importantly, you want to tell them that you go into a link to their website and give them full credit as well as a Backlick. After you publish the post. A script like this works great to notice that we're actually offering them something of great value, a Backlick to their website or website owners are looking for more backlinks. So chances are that they'll be really excited and happy to hear from you also notice that we're carefully suggesting that they can see that linking to our article once it's completed. At the same time, we're not being too pushy about it, this is a true win-win. And your response rate is very likely to be much higher than with the normal pitch process where first you create the content and then you get others to link to it. For example, here is a response that I got easy is done. And now the final step, step three, gathering your responses and actually publishing the post. After you get your responses back, go ahead and create a stunning article, it's important to make sure that it's insanely high value, it should be pretty easy because you're going to have input from some real people with real steps, tips, and hopefully some stats as well. This type of content is not just theoretical, so by default, it will carry a high amount of value. Once you've created the content and posted it on your website, simply contact all the contributors send them a link to the finished article along with the suggestion that once again, they can see that linking to the finished product. It works really well and will result in high-quality content based on real statistics and stories. This way, you will also get a good number of near-instant backlinks to your content, and of course, rankings and traffic as long as you've selected low competition keywords. There it is. That's two of my favorite ways that you can instantly use to get traffic to your blog or website. Art resources and how to improve!

One year ago I started out with digital painting and made some decent progress (I think). Many people ask me, how I learned on my own painting in Photoshop in that time. For this reason, I’d like to share with you all my art resources, that I had been using and still often take a look into for repetition. If you have any other tips for us, let me know in the comments! If you don’t want to read all, just click the links! The Basics There is a ton of good tutorials on Youtube for the first easy steps in Photoshop. I started out with some, that I don’t consider good right now, so I want to recommend you another one, that I found much later. The tutorials of CTRL+Paint cover pretty much everything that you need to know about basic painting. They are easy to understand and follow. And they are completely free! https://www.ctrlpaint.com/library/ For the next step one should probably decide whether to go for a realistic look or going directly into manga/comic style. I recommend learning first the fundamentals of realism, before getting into styles. This way also your manga/anime art will look much more convincing. Starting with painting realistically The first tutorials I watched to paint humans (full body/ portraiture) were from Ahmed Aldoori (also having a great tutorial for blending!) and Jesus Conde (great skin tutorial and also environments covered!).

In addition, I must say that some content is contradictory between these artists and I can just recommend to either try them out yourself and pick one or rely on only one source, that is most attracting you. I decided to rely more on Istebrak, I want to introduce as follows.

My main source for realistic painting though is Istebrak. She is doing some great tutorials, critiques and also has a google community where you can post your (realistically attempted) artwork to get critiques by her and the community. She might sound harsh sometimes, but her content is really professional and helpful. It is a great resource for beginners and advanced people likewise! I was mostly relying on her content to improve in painting and it helped me a lot! Try always to critique the paintings she is showing yourself and watch her suggestions after and you will learn a ton and also be able to train your eyes to actually SEE. I also like the art of Sara Tepes, but it is much stylistic, so I don’t recommend try out that style as a beginner. You can learn a lot from her but please stick with fundamentals first. Tutorials you need to pay for

By now I only bought tutorials from Sakimichan and Ross Draws. I recommend Sakimichan, as soon as you got the fundamentals done. I don’t recommend starting with these tutorials, if you never ever painted before. It might take you longer to get things like anatomy, lighting and so on done correctly. RossDraws tutorials are more or less commented videos on his painting process, which is also really interesting to see of course. I am considering buying also Bucci tutorials and the artbook from swatches. I will update as soon as I worked with these! Getting critiques First of all I recommend joining Istebraks Community, because you can get critiques there quickly and all for free. Also, some other youtubers give critiques on Portfolios for free, but you must be really lucky to be “chosen”, e.g. Swatches (but these critiques are sooo good!). Getting critiques is really fundamental for improvement. So, you really should consider to get them, whenever you can. Depending on what you are aiming for I recommend getting one of the mentorships I talked about earlier.

Another way is to join an online class. I found some great looking ones on https://2d.cgmasteracademy.com/ where also my idol teaches. The prices are really tough though. I did not take part in these classes yet, but they look really promising. Resources that are not video tutorials

PortraitStudio by Istebrak (MUST GET) http://istebrak.com/store/portraitstudio General tips on how to improve (fast) First of all- ART NEEDS TIME. Stop looking for “how to improve fast” videos! And of course, you only learn how to ride a bike, by riding a bike and not watching others riding it. So, get on your bikes now! Painting every day is a must! But to my opinion there is no use to paint everyday only out of one’s head. So, my first tip is: 1. GET REFERENCE This is a lesson I had to learn much too late in my life. It always felt wrong to use references as if I was copying or stealing from others. But fact is: You need to learn seeing first and you need to see things before you can paint them. A dog without reference will never reach realism. Of course, you somehow can improve without referencing BUT it could take you years and years. Take the shortcut, look at references when painting. 2. STUDY It sounds obvious but studying (especially anatomy when painting humans and also doing form studies) is the only way to learn. Try to study everyday (by using references! GOD!), scribble and paint until your fingers start to burn! 3. GET (REAL) CRITIQUES Yes, you can show your painting to your mommy or best friend and they will tell you how amazing you are. But this won’t lead to anything. You need people to tell you what is wrong, what you need to improve. Not friends, artists. Go and ask them. I gave some suggestions in the text above. 4. SETTING GOALS You need to know why you are doing all this. What are you aiming for? Only with the right motivation you can get yourself into painting daily. Also pick some artists that you can set as your personal goal (Melanie Delon for portraiture in my case). 5. KEEP YOUR OLD ARTWORK Sometimes motivation can be a tricky thing so keep your old paintings so that you can see your progress! I even keep steps of each painting to see the progress within that painting! 6. DON’T COMPARE Motivation gets even harder, when you always compare your work to those of great or famous artists. You can get some inspiration from these or just enjoy them. Just stay on your track and focus on your art. Every great artist was a beginner once. 7. DO IT #NOEXCUSES #BECONSISTENT Last but not least, just paint, sketch and draw. Remember that bike thing I was talking earlier about? Yeah. EXTRA: Speedpaints As a general tip: Don’t waste too much time watching speedpaints. They give a REALLY fast insight in how a piece started out and developed, but you won’t know HOW they did it and WHY they made these choices. If you are liking one special artist, consider getting their more in-depth stuff from their patreon or gumroad. I know it is mesmerizing to watch, but you won’t learn much from it. And because they are so addictive, you might lose a whole day without realizing it. It is often good to watch a tutorial instead, but it is even better to just spend your time painting by yourself. I Finished the Entire freeCodeCamp Curriculum in 1 Month (and Recorded Everything)

One month ago I embarked on a challenge that many people told me was insane. I set out to conquer the entire freeCodeCamp curriculum. All while live streaming everything on my YouTube channel.

29 days, 56 Live Streams and 72 hours of live streams later... I did it! 🤩

First a Disclaimer

I'm a professional software engineer. I've been coding since 2013. And I had previous experience working with all of the technologies covered in freeCodeCamp's curriculum.

So this was way easier for me than it would be for most people. Most people spend years earning these certifications.

Remember: It's not about how much time it takes you to complete freeCodeCamp's curriculum – it's about what you are learning along the way.

I created this series as a guide for anyone who gets stuck during the curriculum, and wants to watch how a relatively experienced software engineer would solve challenges and build projects.

How did this crazy month of my life get started?

I've been planning to do this challenge for a while now. But it always seemed to be a HUGE one, which would take a lot of time to complete.

Apparently it didn't take months, as I initially thought. (And I'll tell you why in a moment.)

Before I started this challenge I ran this idea by freeCodeCamp founder Quincy Larson to see whether he thought that this was something that could benefit the developer community. He was very encouraging.

freeCodeCamp has a "learn in public" culture, and a lot of people post their projects on the forum and on GitHub for feedback. And an increasing number of people live-stream themselves building these projects, too.

Quincy said not to worry about "spoiling" any of the challenges or projects. These are all the equivalent of "open notes tests." Students must write their own code, but they can look at other people's solutions for inspiration if they want.

Why Did I Choose freeCodeCamp's Certifications for This Challenge?

I have always recommended freeCodeCamp's curriculum to people who want to start learning web development.

Why? Well, the answer is very simple: it's the best free resource to get up and running with web development, in my opinion.

Now, even though it's a very good resource, people tend to quit along the way because they start to hit different roadblocks... and that's sad. 😔

We want more people to finish the curriculum!

And here is where the Conquering freeCodeCamp's Curriculum challenge starts to shine. It gives everyone a follow-along playlist of videos in which I personally go through the entire curriculum, explaining what I'm thinking with each step I take. I also added my own comments and "bonus" explanations.

Every section on freeCodeCamp is covered in a single video. There are a total of 56 videos. (See below a list of all)

My background and experience

I started to learn how to code in 2013. Since then I've been a freelancer, I had multiple jobs and last year I started to write articles on my blog and started to create YouTube coding tutorials (feel free to subscribe if you like these type of videos - shameless plug 😄).

It is safe to say that I already knew most part of what is to learn on the platform, which gave me an advantage on conquering the curriculum in a month, BUT, don't let this intimidate you...

No matter your experience, no matter if it takes you 2-3-6 months or 1 year to complete the curriculum, just do it. I promise that you won't regret doing it.

I also worked A LOT to put out these Live Streams. Some days I even recorded more than 5 hours and I had a day in which I did 8 Live Streams completing one entire certification in that day... 😅

Why did I do that?

Well... most people would say that I'm either crazy or either a robot.

I'm not a robot, but maybe a bit crazy... yes. 😂

The reason why I pushed so hard was because I had plans to go in a vacation and I wanted to have this all out before going. (Well... the vacation got canceled, but I'm still happy that I had this done.)

And also, to be honest, my craziness to do challenges fast also played a role in this. For some reason I wanted to finish this in a month, but don't ask me why because I don't really know 😅.

Probably because I thought that this would be a new world record or something, although I haven't checked for that so... I don't really know if it is or not. Quincy should tell me, haha.

Conquering freeCodeCamp - All the Recordings

Below you can find a list with all of the recordings - 56 in total.

Keep in mind that all of these were recorded in a series of Live Streams, so you might hear me talk with the chat, I will take some breaks sometimes to analyse and even struggle to find some solutions 😅 - which is perfectly fine!

I did Live Streams instead of "planned recordings" because I wanted it to be as close to real life as possible. This is probably what you'll have to deal with too, so I think it's of a greater value this way than it would have been to just show you the solutions.

Also note that it's perfectly fine to take a break once you are stuck in a challenge. Just leave it for a couple of hours, even a day, and you'll see a great progress when you come back later to the challenge.

Why Keeping It Simple is a Good idea

I do a show every Saturday call Ask the Podcast Coach with Jim Collison from theaverageguy.tv and at one point I decided to connect with Jim over Google hangouts, as well as have a Call In Number for the phone. I had to send a mix to Jim that had myself and the caller (but not Jim) while sending a mix to the caller than had myself and Jim (but not the caller). For those up on the lingo, I had to configure two mix minuses. I needed a mixer with two auxiliary outs. I found the Behringer X1832. It did the job well. I had a ton of extra channels, and effects that I never used.

Then we switched and instead of using a phone (using CallinStudio.com) we went to a chat window to take questions. This was simple and free (using chatwing.com) . So now I have a giant mixer taking up half my desk, and I was looking for an alternative. I have a Yamaha MG102c Mixer (which has been replaced by the MG10XU) that would do the job. For whatever reason, I just didn't like it. It seemed like I had to crank everything up to the max. It still had a clean sound, but it seemed like I really had to push everything. I realize this is stupid (cause you should vote with your ears, not your eyes) but I've been hesitant to go back to it.

The Other Problem with Recording Levels

I use a Zoom H5. A great device with a giant screen. However, due to the way the studio is setup with the majority of the light coming in from Behind the Zoom H5 I cant' really get a clear reading. While there are lights to let me know when things are peaking, I tend to feel those are too sensitive.

Then I heard about the Sound Devices MixPre-3. This might solve all my problems.

Bad Time for a Product Review

I received the Sound Devices MixPre-3 this week. It's horrible timing as I'm getting ready to run off to Podcast Movement, and I'm busy packing, buying Dramamine, recording podcasts and won't have time to do a super deep dive. So here is what I want it to do:

First Impressions Of the Mix Pre-3

WOW IS THIS THING SMALL. I have an iPhone 6s, and it might be an inch wider, but it is the size of an iPhone on steroids. VERY COOL.

At first, I was worried about the touchscreen display. But the display is super clear, and you can adjust the brightness. I had no problems reading it. I was worried about the touchscreen is small. That didn't seem to be an issue (I'm a guitar player with long fingers and not very fat).

I almost didn't need the manual. I plugged in a microphone, hit record and was up and running.

Using it as an Interface - WHY AM I DRUNK?

I went into Hindenburg Journalist and did a recording. it was nice and clear, but I sounded slightly drunk as my voice was lower (as if the sound had been slowed down). I launched Adobe Audition and got the same issue. Hmmm.

As I'm on a PC, I right-clicked on the Speaker in the bottom right-hand corner of my screen and went to the Properties of the Mix Pre-3. I had to set the recording and playback to 2 channel 24 bit, 48K. This solved the issue, and everything sounded fine.

How Do I Setup a Mix Minus?

I was able to set the input of Channel 2 to USB-1, and I could now hear my Skype caller. I was on Channel 3, and life was good. How do I go about making sure that the sound of the caller does not go back to the caller? I look at the output, and all the output routing is for the stereo out mix. Where do I adjust what goes back to the caller? I looked, and looked, and headed to YouTube. They have a video on the Sound Devices website, but they just said, "Set the input and out to the MixPre-3. My thought was, Yeah, but then what.

Finally, I saw a video that explained you can't route what is going back to the USB output, and that you don't need to setup a mix minus, as IT JUST DOES IT. Well, that's cool. I'm definitely stopping by their booth at Podcast Movement and asking some questions about this as (and this is important) I'm not sure I'm 100% right on that.

If I wanted to use the Stereo Output jack into another USB device (in my case I use a Griffin imic) than I could get into more advanced setups.

What Would I Fix About it?

The On/Off switch is placed in a not so great spot, but then again because this thing is so tiny, any place you put the switch it's going to be right on top of something.

It seems like having the SD card behind the battery pack is a bad idea. However, when I push a button and turn on file transfer, it was super fast to copy the files from the device to my computer.

I originally was somewhat bummed that it doesn't have a "Marker" feature, but using the wingman app (free) I can lookup and see what time the boo-boo happened and make a mental note. Not as cool as a marker (especially if you wanted to pass your audio to someone else), but it's a hack for the lack of marker.

While I would almost always be using USB to power the unit, I think charging $40 for an AC power adapter (not included) is BS.

If they didn't have the wingman app (which is very cool) trying to rename something would be a joke. I love that I downloaded the app, and it just connected.

So the short answer of what would I change? - Not almost nothing.

What About the Price?

The price for the unit Pre-3 Unit is $699, the Pre-6 is $899, and the price of the adapter (AC) is $40.

Who Should Buy This?

Someone who is going to be traveling alot, and wants to create great audio without having to worry (too much) about breaking the unit.

The person wouldn't use the built-in microphones of a Zoom H5, and will always be traveling with a mic to record, and headphones to listen.

Someone who has a small space, and they don't want their kids messing with a mixer. These units allow you to create presets, so you can fire up the unit press a button and everything is set. Also, it is super easy to plug stuff in.

The person who understands that any tweaking of sound (more bass, treble,) will be done later in post production (where a mixer allows you to add it while you record)

…..So I decided to make a tutorial.

Yup, is on how to set up a wireless remote control for Photoshop.

I suffer from constant back pain, and I spend many hours sitting down drawing, daily. So the idea came when searching for different alternatives other than just relying on a keyboard for all my shortcuts; smaller keyboards, a G13, etc.They did not work ´cause they are not comfortable enough to put anywhere. I also looked at the Cintiq control but is actually hella expensive and a bit limited for my taste. With this I can have my arm resting anywhere and I can position myself better, e.g., lying on a bed like a pig.

So like I said, this is a tutorial…of sorts…. for those wanting an alternative to using a keyboard for Photoshop shortcuts, also it works with any other art program or any type of software on Windows that uses a keyboard or a mouse.

It doesn’t necessarily has to be the PS3 navigation controller though, you can use any wired or wireless game-pad/joystick of any brand. But in all the research I did I found this is by far the best tool to use as a remote; is small, doesn’t weight much and you can get plenty of shortcuts out of it.

The Nav controller only has 10 buttons, which are plenty already. But thanks to a couple of awesome tools out there and some tweaking around you can set up about 80+ keyboard inputs……say wuuut!!! who the heck need so many shortcuts!!! (I´ll show you how to do it later, below)

First things first. Here is a list of all you need:

PS3 Navigation controller.

From 7 dollars used, up to 20 new on amazon……pretty sweet.

Bluetooth Dongle. (to use the controller wirelessly, so its optional)

From 2 bucks up to 15.

Mini-5 pin USB cable. (to charge the controller or to have it wired if you don’t have a Bluetooth dongle)

1,50 to 10 dollars. Everyone have one of these, EVERYONE!!!!

SCP DS3 driver and a software package. (needed to let windows recognize the PS3 nav controller. Links for them are on the step on how to configure the controller)

Free.

Xpadder. (needed to map the keyboard onto the controller)

10 Dollars. (their old 5.3 version is free, but I highly recommend buying the latest update)

That is it, for less than 30 bucks (if you buy an used controller and a cheap dongle+cable, like i did) you can have your own Photoshop controller extraordinaire.

Lets set up and configure this awesome bastard!

Just to note that If you are using a different controller that get recognized right away by windows, just skip this step.

To configure the controller and the Bluetooth dongle we need the SCP DS3 driver and software package mentioned above. This is needed because Sony never made Windows drivers for their controllers, and also the Bluetooth dongle driver needs to be re-written in order to be paired with the controller, this meaning that the dongle will only be usable with it. If you use different peripherals with a same dongle, you will need to buy one to dedicate only to the PS3 Nav controller.

To make things easier for me (and for you) and also because there are tons of tutorials out there about this step, I´m gonna link you to a YouTube video made by Wiltshire Tutorials. in his video he does a great job explaining (way better that I could ever do) how to do this part.

All the software you need for this part is in the description of that video.

Though I suggest going here first: http://forums.pcsx2.net/Thread-XInput-Wrapper-for-DS3-and-Play-com-USB-Dual-DS2-Controller and download the latest installer for the SCP Driver, also If you need extra information or if you wanna read more about this step that is the place to go. I suggest using the latest installer because that version lets you change the button layout of the controller. By default the PS home button gets configured in a way you can´t map in Xpadder, and with the the latest update I can have the PS home button set up to function as the R1 trigger, and Xpadder does let me re-map that button.

If you don’t care about being able to change that specific button just install the drivers provided in the video, they are totally fine.

Its a pretty straight forward step, just follow everything he says. His video is for the PS3 controller, but it works the same for the Navigation controller, which is basically half of a PS3 controller. If you have any trouble, installing it or pairing it with the BT dongle, check his links in the description and see if that information helps (it did for me)

With that done, now we just need to install and setup Xpadder.

You don´t necessarily need to use Xpadder to re-map the buttons (there are a couple more programs that let you do the same, like joytokey) but I think this software is pretty complete, well thought and it offers a wide range of options to customize your controller or to map your shortcuts any way you like.

The way Xpadder works is simple, you have 3 main features here:

1. The controller:

Which is the hardware you are using. In this case the Nav controller.

2. The Profiles:

Which are the different mappings you configure for a said program. e.g. Photoshop, Painter, etc. Because each program uses different shortcuts is great that you can save different profiles. The cool thing about Xpadder is that you can set it up to automatically switch profiles according to the program you are using.

3. The Sets:

Which are the different mapping layouts within said profile. There up to 8 sets you can configure per profile. .

The Sets are actually the feature I love the most, because it lets you basically have 80+ shortcuts within one profile, and of course using just one little controller.

So here is what I do:

I don´t map the L1 trigger to any shortcut, but instead I make it temporarily (while you hold it) change to set 2, and the L2 trigger to the set 3. This allows me to have a new set of commands each time I hold any of the triggers. Kinda like a combo move. like this:

In each photo the green color above is the trigger I´m holding and the one below is the set that button brings up. You can see how it changes the mapping I have set.

I also have the PS home button configured to change to set 4 (with the “two way” option in the advanced settings. Meaning: that one press of the button goes to set 4 and stays there, and if I press it again it returns to set 1) and there I map L1 to set 5 and L2 to set 6, which now gives me an insane amount of buttons to add shortcuts to. In addition, on the analog stick configuration settings (the little wrench icon on the lower right of the input mapping for that area) you can opt to have all directions as active, giving you 4 more buttons to map, that´s 9 buttons for just the stick.

This is something not many people know or think about doing…. I guess. So that is why I’m doing this “wannabe” tutorial for you all, is always cool to share shit like this, specially if its so simple but useful.
