Honestly? Something very cliche and romantic. Post war domesticality, Mutual pinning, enemies to lovers, highschool/college AU and fluff and smut. And preferably bottom!Gale. I love those cliche kdrama tropes too like rich businessman and poor employee. Basically something I don't have to bang my head to understand the universe

Akdif that is so real anon, sometimes you just want a nice read that doesn't have worldbuilding so you can dive in immediately 😩

It's so fun to play with all these tropes with Clegan (although I don't think I've ever seen Enemies to Lovers with them? Strangers to Annoyed to Friends maybe but it's a fun thing to think about! Though it's a bit hard for me because I can't see them not in love or pining from the start lmao, so the closest I can get is Academic Rivals in Flight school, but the tension of them being enemies with both of their competency kink gping haywire when they see the other? Chef's kiss)

Post-war domesticality!!! That's the good stuff 🥹 Them finally getting the end they fought for and survived for, that one light that kept them walking through it all 🥹 They deserve it so bad, I understand why you'd want to see more of it 😭 All the fluff and the sweetness 🥰

Mutual pining is my absolute jam, even if it's painful sometimes but it makes them finally being together so much sweeter 🥹

It's really fun to put them in worlds other than canon, to explore how they'd be both as individuals and together without the trauma of war 🥹 We're lucky to have really good HS/College AUs in the fandom but there's never enough, there's too many possibilities to explore 😊

Who can say no to fluff and smut ? They're so in love with each other, it flows in every word 🥹 Luckily for us, their ao3 tag has plenty of wonderfully written smut 🥰 Ahh, I feel you with Bottom!Gale, I personnaly prefer it too (personal hc, ofc) so it's mostly what I try to write/imply but there are some awesome fics with Bottom Gale on ao3 too 🤗

I don't watch K-dramas but I hear the slow burn is really slow so it's perfect for the Buckies 😂

3. All-time favorite pairing?

Hmmm, good question. Probable Tidus/Yuna from FFX? I absolutely ADORE their relationship. It felt very natural, it was touching, and thinking about some of their scenes is giving me the chill. So often in media I feel like a relationship is rushed or stilted or like one of the characters is bent out of shape solely for the sake of romance, but not with them. They bring out the best in each other, and what I find so important is the fact that even though their love/relationship DOE make them reconsider some choices...they don't throw everything away for that. I think their relationship and interactions lead to cases in which their eyes are opened and they undergo some change, but what's important is that they're not changing for the other person. The other person gives them a new perspective that allows them to grow.

FFX is interesting to me because even though I don't know it like the back of my hand as I do with FFVII (or once did, it's been a while), so many of the scenes and messages have stuck with me a decade and a few playthroughs later. The Sending and this scene are some of my all time favorites in gaming. They're just so in love.

I know I'm being a bit vague, but I don't want to spoil anything for anyone who hasn't played FFX. Though if you haven't played FFX, DO NOT WATCH THAT VIDEO. The video has spoilers even if my commentary (hopefully) does not.

(Also, I'll have you know Estimeric is definitely up there as it's the pairing I've written the most for and one I've spent sooo much time thinking about, but Tidus/Yuna wins out because I think it's impacted me more as a person, or stuck with me longer. Estimeric is lovely, but Tidus/Yuna is precious. That may or may not make sense, but they occupy different spots in my brain, basically.)

5. Favorite platonic pairing?

Right now I'm super into Devil May Cry so I'm going to go with Dante/Lady. I feel like those two would do basically anything for the other, and I really enjoy when you can get a long term friendship between a male and female character that's just that. Sometimes I'll ship it and I've enjoyed ship content between the two, but I really prefer them as platonic partners. Or sometimes FWB without romantic attachment, which I clarify because I've always thought of "platonic" as meaning non-romantic but apparently it means non-sexual, which leads to some conversations about the conflation between romantic and sexual attraction but I digress. Usually I like them as just friends. The FWB is actually more like a HC of two people who slept with each other once (and only once) when they were young to see what it was like and then decided that nah, they're not really into that, they're better off as friends and they'll stay friends, no hard feelings, so they do.

14. Fandom you keep returning to?

Final Fantasy VII! I was absolutely obsessed with it when I was 13-14 (maybe up to 15), and every few years I go through a phase where I feel like that obsession has woken back up.

Funnily enough, I've never really shared anything I've made for the FFVII fandom. I've written so much fic over the years- the first fic I can remember writing was a 38k word time travel fic about FFVII when I was 14ish- but I've never posted any of it. I ran a FFVII blog for years, but it's on another email and eventually it got so inconvenient to access that I kind of let it die. The remake coming out has helped somewhat, but other times I'll just randomly feel like I want to play FFVII or want to read FFVII fic or look at FFIVI art or watch FFVII videos etc. and so I come crawling back.

Thank you so much for your asks! Fun to think about these things and what my favorites are. Honestly one of the biggest things this game has revealed is that I don't really have a lot of hard/firm feelings on things. I'm very indecisive and choosing favorites is hard, but it's nice to be reminded of all the things I love as I try to come up with my answers :)

I got good news last night!!!

I have known my three husbands for three years now, just almost, and I’ve selfshipped with them officially for two years because the fandom is so. Cliquey? Really two-faced? I’d love making mutuals but i had to pretend I saw the three as a mum, a dad, and a child because everyone who didn’t was a ‘creep’ [there are def some creeps in the fandom but i don’t touch proship stuff I’m against it].And when I eventually did I was lied to, people were ‘nice’ but then like and make posts about why people like me with these headcanons are all weird n dumb. Hope that’s not too sad I promise you this gets better!!

I grappled with my feelings, first choosing two of them, then settling for one for a while.

Then I decided fuck it I’m going to love them all and I’m going to give em all I’ve got while i still have time. 

I grew up in a BAD foster care system. And their media shared similarities to my home life… I realised that if they could never leave their prison I could. It’s what they would want. I feel loved by them. They’ve helped me settle into society bit by bit, I’m still getting there, but I’ve got them. And my amazing real friends who have been kind to me.

There was recently a presentation I couldn’t attend [money reasons, travel reasons :’<]  and the creators of the show ………… well…. Made them canonically poly or at least expressed a preference/liking towards the ship. 

Bit of backstory, a dragshow based on my f/o’s media was created a couple months ago that made my husbands poly and the creators attended and were chill with it. I was over the moon. The drag performers attended the presentation and kissed n stripped n what have you after the creators expressed their love for fanart. 

Blasting a ship piece of my boys together on a huge projector for more minutes than should be allowed. My jaw hit the floor. 

So in short they kiss eachother, AND me, They’re all adults like I assumed, the fandom who was once so adamant on what was canon is now all death of the author the people who I remember having contempt for the ship are like ‘ah. That’s awesome what funny people huh guess we were all wrong’ through their teeth as if they weren’t talking shit earlier this year- this is cathartic. And I owe the creators my soul they make all my hcs canon I jokingly [and never posted this] hc'd one of the as Italian and they MADE IT CANON THROUGH HIS SIGNATURE. On my hands and knees I can now go about guilt-free without the fear I'll lose my boys <333 thinking about marrying them.

I have a degree in Film Studies, I wrote my dissertation on representations of masculinity in Hollywood films of the 1990s with a focus on Robin Williams in Jumanji, Mrs Doubtfire and Good Will Hunting! That was a lot of fun to write and I can occasionally get pretentious about films from time to time. I am always down to talk films with people though

okay love this, I don't usually keep track of my hc's and don't want to revert back to my usual bottom barty and evan collects teeth bullshit.

It seems to have made it into my fics' canon that Barty’s phone screen is always smashed or cracked but I think Evan’s is pristine like he has a fucking bumper phone case incase he drops it, with a screen protector and if it gets the slightest scratch he gets frustrated and buys a new screen protector.

I'm putting together a roleplay blog myself, and I was wondering if you had any advice? I've never put myself out there in roleplay beyond accumulating small rp communities/friends on Discord, and I'm kinda intimidated by being Perceived on a platform as big as tumblr /lh

Advice on making the blog appealing to other roleplayers and any general rp advice you'd be willing to share would be very appreciated <3

|| Hi there! I don't mind a single bit! Sorry for the delay, I wanted to make sure I made sense and gave you good information :)

First off, it's so awesome that you're looking to start a roleplay blog! I am huge on encouraging people to write and join the hobby, and it's always nice to see new writers getting started and sharing ideas!

As silly as it sounds, my biggest piece of advice is to NOT be intimidated. Don't be afraid to put yourself out there, follow characters in your fandom, share things, post your HC/drabbles/favorite ships/ideas/storyline ideas etc and reach out to other writers or groups for interactions! The more friendly you are, and the more you put your writing out there, the more traction you'll receive as opposed to just lurking around and liking stuff here or there. : ) I'm still new to roleplaying on Tumblr, but the first thing I did when I decided to make a blog here was look at other writers to get a general idea for how my blog should be set up. It's helpful for a writer to see right off the bat who your character is/their fandom/the writers writing style, and rules. Some writers are very cautious about writing with minors and won't interact if you don't have your 'age bracket' right on the front page where they can see it. Your blog doesn't have to be super big or flashy, but I always like seeing a writer with open starters posted, a simple list of rules and hashtag categories so I can easily find something if I look on their page. But the main thing I look for are recent posts with active writing! Someone can have the coolest blog in the world, but if they don't write it's kind of a let down! Even if it's timeline banter-- which I absolutely adore-- it shows you're an active writer, and that's what we're looking for. : ) Other general roleplay advice is this; Don't be afraid to check out other platforms. Tumblr is big, yes but there are other platforms/sites/forums you can write on! If you're on Discord and not opposing to branching out, you can search for your fandom (Disney roleplay for example) on Disboard and it will show you different roleplay groups listed there. When I first started with Kuzco and realized how dead the fandom was, I made an account everywhere. Here, Twitter, Facebook, Roleplayer.me, Aniroleplay etc. And I just started posting. IC statuses, drabbles, headcanons-- whatever came to mind, and started following as MANY people in related fandoms as I could find. You slowly build your friends up as you go, and can branch out and sometimes form connections between characters you never thought would cross paths, which is a lot of fun. I'd also say to keep in mind that it is ALL about the QUALITY not the QUANTITY. If you can write 1500k+ words each reply? That's awesome! But if you can write a beautifully descriptive reply in 500 words, that's just as amazing! Don't pressure yourself to do more than you can just to make someone else happy! Work at your own pace. Last but not least; HAVE FUN WITH IT! There's always something new to learn, but don't be afraid to jump right in and get your feet wet. Okk this post is a lil thing I had to get off my chest (hot take ig) but I saw a post recently that was complaining about azujamj fandom dynamics and it made me so angry, not because it was disagreeing with my take, but because it just seemed so?? Angry?? It's completely okay to dislike a common trope but don't be a pretentious mf??? It's really not that hard??? Don't bash people who happen to have a different interpretation of characters than you and say they're completely OOC (bc as an avid reader and writer azujami has so many good fics)

This is my thing: Please, please, dislike a thing as much as you want. But don't get upset with others for liking that thing. There's a difference between, 'I don't like trains and wish there was less train content of my feed' and 'ughh god I would like trains but God most train-lovers are so annoying and only share the most boring facts ever I swear'

Also, if you want to see more of something and you're gonna be like this tm about it, I have a much better idea for you:

Spread your takes in a nice way. Write fics that feature your interpretation, if you can't write post small HCs and theories, in a kind way that doesn't bash people who disagree with you. I see headcanons about Azul that I disagree with, some of which are pretty popular. And yeah, I can make a post about how these stupid people who enjoy the same thing as me and make content that I get to enjoy for free dared to disagree with me, but you know what that makes me? A dick.

I know, I know, it's weird to get so worked up about it, but this feels like such a common trend in this fandom. If you have a darker interpretation of the characters, that's lovely! Diverse interpretations make a fandom with media literacy. But don't complain about how everyone's woobifying your faves just bc they don't think the twins loved Azul's overblot and were really disappointed they couldn't eat him please. It feels belittling and very pretentious - your take isn't necessarily the correct one.

And you know the funniest part? A lot of people who complain about everyone woobifying or excessively darkening their faves or whatever? They don't even make anything for their fandom. If you want to see more X, don't complain about people not making X, make X or request X from someone who takes requests if you really really don't wanna write.

I'm not criticizing takes here - you can say that you feel, or just straight up evidence contradicts X take. You can analyze X take and say it seems implausible. But when you criticize people and complain about real people who do x thing, you're not trying to analyze, debate, or share information anymore, you're being a dick.

No one gets hurt by someone saying that the twins and Azul deep down consider each other friends, and no one's hurting anyone by saying that they find jamiazu 's funny scenes a major part of their HCs. No one's sinning by disagreeing with you.

So please, for the love of all that is holy, if you're going to criticize a take, actually bring up reasonable criticisms - 'Azul being treated like a crybaby because of his breakdown may be a popular take, but it belittles his character and clearly contradicts Canon', isn't that much harder to write than 'Ugh why doesn't anyone realize that Azul's actually a terrible person, Jesus he'd murder you for a single corn chip', and it's more accurate because it's a genuine criticism not just you complaining people don't have the same interpretation as you, but also kinder. It's not that hard just BE NICE. Please! The people who have those takes and still people, and also, even then, their takes are usually backed up by some form of evidence. Don't act objective if you're not even gonna be open to criticism of your own takes.

My sketching style is very recognizable so it's 100% my art style but I think it's interesting how things like the shape of the eyelashes, thickness of the eyelashes, underlashes, and how the eyes and rings in the eyes are drawn make my drawings give off a different vibe

Cuz I'm using the same art style for all of these doodles. I tend to draw the eyes of sharper tsurime-eyed meow meow mf charas the same way. I just do the details differently depending on the character

VRoid Rambles

I watched a bunch of FGO MMD videos (of Douman, Oberon, and Morgan), and now I feel tempted to try my hand at making MMD models for my faves (Selena, Tatsumiya, Idate) in VRoid Studio…

I wanna make 3D models so I can make my faves dance in MMD Selena and IdaTatsu MMDs you will be real someday…

I'd use VRoid Studio because it provides bases for hair and clothing, and I don't feel like using Blender tbh

Also I watched a bunch of VRoid Studio model making tutorial videos, it's way easier than I thought. Most of it is honestly just drawing normally and using preset assets as a guide

Thank god FGO being so big and Douman and Oberon's huge popularity means that people will definitely make MMD models for them

People have already done my work for me (Bless you!)

JP fans have already made models of many FGO charas, so I can play around with them. I can make LimGuda and ObeGuda MMDs… It's common practice in the MMD community to credit all the assets you use: Models, Camera, Dance Motions, Stages, Lighting Effects, etc.

I saw JP users say they made 3D models of FGO charas (such as Douman and Oberon) with programs like VRoid Studio or Blender. So it's totally doable

It'd be kinda fun to try making MMD models for my FGO faves in the future too, but not now

Especially with how detailed their designs are (especially Douman's)

Imo Douman is way harder than Idate because of their hair and outfit

Like for Douman and Kuroha, the violin part would actually still fit, like I could actually still see that for those two, but it just doesn't fit charas like Idate, Judar, and Xanxus

I personally prefer Cantarella fan covers (VOCALOID/UTAU and human fan-covers) over the original due to stronger tuning/mixing

But Cantarella's instrumentals are excellent

The original Cantarella MMD has a dance section. I love the little spin and jump in the air and landing on the ground, I think that fits my faves more

The remastered Cantarella ~grace edition~ has a violin playing part which is aesthetically nice

I genuinely think ayato would be very in favor of keeping your relationship a secret, at least for a little while. He knows being in the public eye can be… overwhelming for many, himself included, and he wouldn’t dare push that onto you. He just wants… everything in its place for lack of a better term, before you announce you’re dating.

Though despite the fact he literally suggested you keep your relationship a secret… he’ll openly flirt, and tease with you in public. All the time. I’m front of people. Important people. And then also thoma and ayaka, but they don’t care (ayaka will 100% tease her brother though!)

Definitely has thought to himself “don’t hold their hand, the leader of the kujou clan is right there. Don’t do it.” Because I do believe ayato has his… clingy moments. Listen he just wants to love, and he often times shows that live through small gestures like holding your hand. If he does hold your hand out of habit though, he’ll play it off as nothing, a… friendly gesture if you will.

So much affection in private, oh my god. Imagine this, you come home late at night after a long day of meetings and surprisingly ayato is finished with his work, waiting for you in your shared room reading a book. Instantly he will pull you under the covers with him and just… lay there. You won’t move for a while unfortunately.

Likes having your presence just..: near him. At all times. It he can’t kiss you on your boba date (which looks like a simple, friendly outing to many) then he’ll have you near him at least throughout the rest of your day.

Kazuha doesn’t… get it… really. Why do you want to hide your relationship? I mean yes it’s nice having this sorta “secret” between the two of you… alright. He’ll agree.

He honestly has a very easy time with this. He’s not a huge fan of pda, opting for mostly a kiss on the cheek, the back of your hand, or just holding your hand (if you were open about your relationship that is), so he’s just kinda… hanging out.

I like to headcanon that a lot of people like kazuha. He’s an attractive guy, and is easy to get along with, so many people either casually strike up conversation with him, which could lead to flirting depending on the person. He has almost said “oh this is my s/o” every time.

Writes you into a lot of his poems, and when he publishes them everyone’s like “yo??? Who’s this beautiful person the author is talking about???” Obviously it’s you. It’s a silent way for kazuha to say publicly that he loves you without anyone knowing.

-He speaks in Irish Gaelic to Northern Ireland (The boy is learning) and Scotland (Irish and Scottish Gaelic are very similar) more to England's disgrace

so, in your post about your HC superhero AU, you mentioned that the villains were mostly helsmits, and you already gave us a few (evil x, helsknight, and the unnamed bdubs sibling that I’m not sure if they’re an original hels or Pungence), so what drove those guys to villainy in the first place?

So! Yeah it’s Pungence, and ofc we’ve got EX and Hels himself.

But there are lots of other Helsmits, most of the names of which are not mine obviously, but I’ve got some stuff on them.

As I mentioned, EX and Pungence ran away from the AHM when they were kids, leaving their brothers behind to be trained to be supers. Hels was knighted by the same ghosts as Wels, so he’s kind of stuck because he swore to protect. He’s got a loophole, though: his partner and the people he considers his family are all villains. Therefore, he is protecting what he has to. Wels is pissed about that but can respect it.

Some of those are mine, most of them are just ones the fandom have come to conclusions on. If you guess them all right I’ll give you a cookie lol

Basically, they’re all related to the Hermits in some way- maybe they’re siblings, cousins, some rando who happened to be born at the same time, ex best friends, etc. They got sick of being in the Hermits’ shadow, and decided to do something about it.

Most have powers. Some are failed trainees. Some are self-taught. Some are just angsty and decided a life of villainy was what they needed to do. There are even one or two trained by professional villains.

I should mention that the Hermits and Helsmits are not the only hero/ villain teams out there. You thought the Hermits were bitter about being forced into hiding? How do you think the Dream SMP, the actual psychopaths who killed the president’s daughter, feel? The split about down the middle, but that’s a story for another time.

Fortunately, there aren’t very many all-out wars with full teams. Mostly it’s just a couple wreaking havoc, and the appropriate Hermits are sent out to deal with it.

There are a couple very specific backstories though, and I’ll tell you about them:

~ For as long as he could remember, Hels and his twin brother were actually very well off. They had that cool thing where they could read each other’s minds, and they didn’t even fight that often, despite sharing a bedroom and… pretty much everything else.

But. The biggest issue? Wels was a huge suck-up. To their parents, the teachers, the coaches. Hels was more of a ‘put a finger up towards the world’ kind of guy, because he knew it wasn’t kind, and he was happy to return the favor.

When he and his brother were given power as vast as they were, Hels’ mind went straight to what he could do to the assholes that called him slurs, made fun of Wels for every reason possible, their parents, who made both boys feel like they were failures no matter what they did.

Unfortunately, to become a knight, there’s an itty bitty problematic oath you have to take. You can’t harm anyone who doesn’t attack first, and you must hit back within reason.

“Within reason” meant a different thing to Hels than it did his brother and the knights. He’s not stupid. And he doesn’t let go of things easily.

His solution? Leave and find a way to make that oath his own.

Yeah, maybe seducing the leader of the only villain organization he knew (it was very small at the time) was a ploy to get out of being a hero. He didn’t feel like saving the assholes that had caused him so much pain. But then he really fell in love, and he made some genuine friends, and after that?

No one could stand in his way.

~ Pungence liked having powers. It put him above kids who made fun of him and his brother, not that they knew that, but it was nice to have a secret like that.

He had photokinesis, just like Bdubs, only his was more… dark. Bdubs produced light. Pungence sucked it out of things.

Still, they got along. When people were racist assholes at school, the brothers just let loose a string of random Spanish until they got scared and left them alone. That was pretty funny, no matter how many times it happened.

And then one day, there was an offhand comment about how America made the best superheroes. Anyone who wasn’t white or an American citizen could never live up to the heroes they had.

Especially Bdubs and Pungence.

That was the last straw. The boys had decided enough was enough, and showed all those kids right then and there just how heroish they could be.

Which… didn’t go over as well as they’d hoped.

Their family was shunned by the rest of their small town, and they were forced to leave. They ended up in New York, but it wasn’t long before the AHM tracked them down. A massive sum of compensation, more than either brother could comprehend, was offered to their parents in exchange for the two of them. There wasn’t much hesitation when the decision was made to hand them over.

Bdubs resolved to show everyone who had doubted them, their parents, everyone back home, even himself, that he could be great. The greatest, even. He’d be the brightest hero the world had ever seen.

But Pungence couldn’t forgive all of that. Frankly, he was surprised Bdubs could. Normally they were on the same page as far as things like revenge went, but not this time.

He wasn’t going to prove them wrong. He was going to prove them as right as he could, and he knew he’d go down in history… just not on the same side of it as his brother.

Martyn Littlewood used to be Ren’s best friend- more than that, for a time, but that went out the window when he discovered Ren was a werewolf.

At first, he was mostly horrified. He felt bad for that, mostly because the only reason he found out was that Ren came to him for help after being injured by hunters, thinking Martyn would help him. He was wrong, of course, but he didn’t know that at the time.

Once Martyn got over the fear and Ren was far away out of his life, he decided maybe powers like that wouldn’t be so bad. He happened to come across an offer to become a hero, and he didn’t pass it up.

They didn’t quite give him the powers he was expecting. But honestly, a wendigo wasn’t all that bad. Pretty sick, actually.

He realized the issue when his thirst for blood became too strong to control. It took the entire police department together to contain him, and he was handed over to the AHM, only to be recruited by EX and Hels.

Revenge on Ren and the people who locked him up, plus free usage of his powers? Not a bad deal.

~ Typically, heroes were respected more than villains. You know what villains have over heroes?

Fear factor.

People are terrified of beings with power and aren’t afraid to use it. Heroes could be pushed around, and villains could not.

The Void twins knew this. It’s why they came to the Earth dimension in the first place- power. Their powers don’t work in their own dimension, so Earth was a good place to make a name for themselves.

X wanted to go down in history, just like Bdubs.

So did EX. They wanted to be the most powerful interdimensional overlord in the history of time-space.

X was able to keep them at bay for a few years, but when they met a new boy with just as much ambition as them? It was too good an opportunity to pass up.

Pungence said goodbye to Bdubs when he left. EX said nothing to their brother, because they knew X had the power to catch up to them. So as soon as they were ready, EX got them to Britain and they didn’t come back until they were ready to take on New York with a brand new team of very powerful people ready to kick ass.

Do you have any advice for fanfic writers just starting out? I’d love to post something someday, I only started writing fanfic a couple months ago, and keep it all to myself. Some of y’all out there (read: you) are so good at this it’s terrifyingly intimidating. I’m not sure I’ll ever be that good and I’m not sure how to improve, nor how to know when something is worth posting at all. Somedays I wanna be a writer and share so bad, but other days I think “what’s the point?” if I’ll never be that good. It’s tempting just to throw everything I have in the garbage. Also, writing fanfic is a new concept to me and I also really struggle with telling whether what I’ve created is in character. Basically…I love your writing, and, help??

first off, thank you so much for the kind compliments! it's flattering that you like my work so much and that you came to me for advice on this. it's important to keep in mind that everyone's journey into writing is different, but since i've been in fandom over half my life now, i can offer you a little bit of what i've learned has worked for me over the years

i know it's tough not to do, but you should try not comparing your work (especially when you're just starting out!) to others. i know that's not easy - i still have a hard time with this sometimes! but it's rarely helpful. it's good (and even motivating!) to find aspirational work in your fandom of choice, but once you start using that work to undermine your own confidence instead of inspiring yourself, it stops being helpful. i don't want my work to make you feel like it's not worth trying! i want you to create and enjoy the process!

i answered an ask similar to this some time ago. linking it here for a more detailed answer but the bullet points:

read fic! read books! read articles! read!

REVIEW - specifically, leave the kinds of reviews you would like to get on your own work. be specific and detailed. this is nice for the writer, it's good for you because it helps you learn to identify what you like in stories, which means you'll have a better understanding of how to apply those concepts to your own work, and it makes you more active in the fandom! (also, pro tip: if you review frequently and well, those writers will be more likely to check your stuff out and offer feedback too)

piggybacking off that - engage with people's posts! make rec lists. make meta/HC posts. leave replies. send asks. put yourself out there. meeting people in the fandom and engaging in fandom activities will make you more motivated. reach out to the writers you like, leave those good reviews we were talking about (they'll remember you), and if you're feeling spicy offer to beta. i credit beta-ing for friends and people i admired for helping me develop a lot of skill and confidence. it's a great way to learn from other people

re: keeping things in character - this can be really intimidating! if you know people who are familiar with the source material, see if any of them would be down for reading and offering you feedback! if that's too scary or not an option, well - take some notes! what character traits do you want to keep in mind? quirks of speech? what type of physicality do the characters have? what motivates them and how transparent are they prepared to be about it? ask yourself stuff like this, the things you like in other work or find important to your story, and write it down! make your own reference list, until you feel confident enough. sometimes it's nice to have something concrete to refer to, when you're editing or stuck in a scene

don't give up!!!! if i had given up when i was feeling unskilled, inexperienced, and unconfident i would never have gotten to where i am now. keep in mind the work you're reading and enjoying from me is the product of like 16 years of doing the damn thing!

Writing fic can be a really fun and rewarding hobby. For me, it's also a great social activity, because I get to meet so many cool people (yes, this means you too!) through it. The worst thing you can do when you're starting out (or ever?) is need the work to be perfect. Remember - finished is better than perfect will ever be.

At the end of the day, everyone's here because we love the same stuff and we want to have fun. Fanwork is a thing we do FOR FREE for each other! It's a gift you're putting out there for everyone else like you. That's something worth at least trying out, right?

i promise all these anxieties you're having are extremely common (i share or have shared... basically all of them lmao) but it's not worth letting them hold you back from having a potentially really great experience with your fellow nerds. i believe in you! write that fic! post that fic! you can do it!
