it is interesting and terrifying to talk to my mother about aging.
she, my uncle, and my father all help take care of my grandparents, and during our call she flat-out told me that, at some point, my siblings and I will likely need to move my parents out of their house into continuing/graduated care. That step would have been so beneficial for my grandparents---for the aging parents of many of my mother's friends---but that generation seems so resistant, so stubborn; they want to age in their homes even if said homes have stairs, sharp corners, haven't been properly cleaned in years. "I am going to try and be more open to change," my mother said with a slightly-embarrassed laugh; we as her children just might need to remind her sometimes.
meanwhile I---a thirty-year-old woman who previously would have described her overall posture on aging as "that's a future problem!!!"---am quietly freaking out.
#''have you thought about your mortality lately?'' is an odd way to start your weekend.#I think my mother is quietly preparing for her parents' deaths and so it makes sense#this is where her mind goes. they are prepping estates and talking about medical decision-making#so of course this is what she thinks about.#it's not even something I DON'T think about except when I try my mind shies away.#(that's a future problem!!!!!! THAT IS A FUTURE PROBLEM!!!!!!)#anyway. fun saturday things.#celestial emporium of benevolent knowledge

Cauldron's big whopping mistake
I'm just saying, Cauldron could have really done something brilliant with Eden. Not to say the vials weren't a smart thing, they definitely were, but where was the pizzaz? The showmanship? If I had stumbled into the unknowable vast corpse of an alien god, you know what I would've done? Make a fucking restaurant.
You see, they were blessed with the first truly new meat to have come to earth in a very long time. Alien meat and crystal body structures. Imagine the crazy dishes they could have made. Like fuck dude I'd eat an alien if someone gave me the chance. They could have even kept the whole giving people powers schtick with it.
Breaker biscuits with shard dust in the flour they used, Tinker Truffles, Master Muffins, Brute Borscht, Stranger Schnitzel, the possibilities were goddamn endless. Make it a restaurant at the end of the universe type deal where it isn't in the universe proper like the actual Cauldron compound so they still only get the super rich patrons.
Number Man could handle the finances (obviously) and I do believe he would also be a good greeter and waiter, polite but never too friendly. Contessa in the kitchen making the food, Doctor Mother is that lady who asks how everything is going and you don't really know what her actual job is at the restaurant but it is clear she does something important, Custodian would buss the dishes, and Slug would be there too.
They could have had the best gimmick of any cape organization, but no. They just had to make entity girl corpse water in nerdy little vials. For all of that power, all of that planning, Cauldron lacked the vision to properly do something with it.
#I don't know exactly where the triumvirate would fit into the equation#I think maybe Eidolon and Alexandria would fit into the role of those part time workers who show up on the weekends#like they're important#but the operation would still run without them#while legend is that one guy who got unofficially fired a month ago but he keeps coming into work even though everybody including him knows#he doesn't work there anymore and its just getting weird at this point but its too awkward to ask him to leave so he just kinda mills aroun#wormblr#parahumans#worm web serial#cauldron#Doctor Mother#Contessa#number man

Prince Edward has paid tribute to his wife, Sophie, as his ‘absolute rock’ as he discussed his family life with Alan Titchmarsh during an appearance on Love Your Weekend.
The episode, which is set to air on March 10, the Duke of Edinburgh’s 60th birthday, will see the Prince sit down with the presenter and open up about his wife, the Duchess of Edinburgh, and their two children, Lady Louise, 20, and James, Earl of Wessex, 16.
Speaking of how much Sophie means to him, the Duke called his wife ‘critical, absolutely critical.’
He continued:
‘She's been an absolutely brilliant rock and I'm incredibly lucky that I found Sophie and that she found me. Hopefully, we've been a really brilliant partnership.
We're very lucky, we’ve got two, of what we would think are particularly brilliant children, who are forging such different paths for themselves. I think that's also equally fascinating.’
Elsewhere he spoke about the significance of Mothering Sunday and described what the celebration means for his own family.
Prince Edward said, ‘Always and it's doubly so when you've got your own children - your own family is very important.’
‘Those days were [important growing up], and these days are really important to remember some very, very special people in our lives.
There should be several times in the year when we make a special sort of effort and Mothering Sunday was very much one of those where you made a special effort just to say ‘thank you.’
So it goes on and that's the lovely thing about it. That's the lovely thing about families and that's what it should be.’
During the discussion, Prince Edward also revealed the lasting memories his grandchildren have of the late Prince Philip, including teaching his daughter Lady Louise to drive a carriage.
It's a hobby, which was a passion of the late Duke’s, and has since been adopted as one of Lady Louise’s.
He said, ‘It was entirely off her own bat. I mean, you know, just one day, ‘Can I go out with you and go sit on the boxes?’
He was like, ‘Absolutely.’
'He never was going to say no! He took her out with the team and I think it was only the second time, he was driving along and he said, ‘Do you want to have a go?’ and she didn’t have time to even answer the question, he just handed the reins across.’
Elsewhere in the discussion, Prince Edward spoke about how much it meant to him to be bestowed the title of Duke of Edinburgh. He said:
‘It was a huge privilege but also quite a lot of weight of expectation as well. I mean, there's an awful lot of legacy that came with that title and everything that my father had done. Especially when you're not inheriting it, this is a choice… that comes with all the expectations that people have.
It's just the weirdest and strangest feeling. You walk into a room and, particularly still today, there are name places on a card and I still look around going ‘Yes, but where am I sitting?’
Explaining how he would describe his father Prince Philip, The Duke called him an ‘extraordinary mind’, adding:
‘He was the Prince Albert of our age. He had an extraordinary mind. He loved design, he loved innovation, he was brilliant with all sorts of people.
Sometimes it didn't necessarily come across that way, but he was actually brilliant with people. He was always, always encouraging everybody. You sort of needed to get to know him.’
The interview comes after Sophie gave her own touching tribute to Edward during a royal engagement earlier in March.
The Duchess gave a rare, gushing tribute to her husband, calling him ‘the best of fathers and the most loving of husbands.’
Prince Edward looked deeply emotional throughout the speech, putting his hands over his face, as Sophie spoke about their love, saying, ‘I am so proud of the man he is.’

at seventeen, I don't think I ever thought about the future in a way that then seemed so distant, a future that in my vision did not exist — ten years later, me at twenty seven.
had I thought about it then, I don't have much clue now as to what I would have pictured. but would it be this:
three days after turning twenty seven listening to the scientist by Coldplay, fetching out my hardbound gold and black edition of looking for alaska by john green on a Saturday evening. wearing a bottle green cropped hoodie, hair in a messy bun, clutching the book to my chest, crying as random snippets of being in high school having such an innocent and unsullied idea of the world and the people in it flash in my head.
grieving. isn't that what this is? life is a labyrinth of suffering — I had read it back at 17 and I didn't realize this in its true essence. so I guess this is me grieving my loss of innocence.
but it's not all so sad and tragic. the answer to how do we ever get out of this labyrinth of suffering is not one I yet have but I'm finding moments that have begun to answer it nonetheless.
friday game nights with new friends, post dinner walks where we talk about the films we love and the books that found a place in our hearts and stayed. why else do I come back home on Saturday and go through my book collection to pick this particular book that I haven't touched in a decade?
I used to always get mad at people when they hated on the sitcom how I met your mother's ending because they missed the point — it was never quite about the mother but who Ted had to become in order to meet her. and just in that fashion have I not missed the point of all the books and TV shows and movies I've ever loved:
the point of love and friendship is not to protect you like some guardian angel though often it can have that effect. nor is the point to fulfil you though they are integral in contentment and satisfaction overall. the point of friends and lovers is not to preserve your sanity when it is racing to its death like a burning cigarette though it can many times help.
I do not know what the point is, if I'm being honest. but I know that the point of this life of mine is to be a friend and lover to myself. how? maybe I need to reread my favourite books again to come closer to that answer. maybe I need to face the truth more bravely. at twenty seven, I'm sure I've mustered that much courage, perspective, and compassion for myself.
as I light my favourite candles and end my birthday week, I know this — the seventeen year old me did well, the twenty seven year old me will do better, and the thirty seven year old me will do even more fantastically.
