I recently rewatched gravity falls like im sure everyone else has these past couple months. apparently my partner had never seen it despite us both being the prime demographic at time of airing. they enjoyed it so much we were both hurt there was no more.

we both understand why there can never be a season 3 but the bittersweet "summer is over and we can never come back here" hit more like 500 freight trucks straight to the heart than I remembered...

just now. imagining percy before learning of his father as a god. remembering nothing of him but a face he couldn't name. a face he and his father shared. percy often wondering if they were similar in other ways. if his father liked wrapping his arms around mom while she packed s'mores for the campfire like he did. if his father liked long car rides to the beach while mom sang to whatever was playing on the radio like he did. if his father liked running along the beachside shore while the water crashed against his feet like he did. if the reason his father was lost at sea was because he wanted to immerse himself in all the ocean had to offer. if the waves were so captivating, he'd dive underneath the surface and search to his heart's content. if the reason he was lost was because he wanted to find himself. if faces were any indication, percy didn't know who he was. maybe his father felt that way too.

i just think its interesting that nandor hasn't had any major scenes since ep5 and even when he IS in a scene hes always attaching himself to someone's storyline and most importantly never ever alone like be real w me is he avoiding thinking about the crash out he Just had over guillermo and also the fact that mortal lives are fleeting and he'll never have guillermo forever and trying to date the guide so he doesn't have to deal w allat or is he doing exactly that

One of the most devastating things about Pandora Hearts is that, at its core, it's a story about moving on...but it's also a story that no one can ever (fully) move on from.

thinking about the christening of the protostar, when kathryn and chakotay last saw each other. how it makes clear that kathryn does not want to go back into deep space, that she has had enough of that for a lifetime. "dont let them promote you to admrial, they'll take your ship and put you behind a desk" Kathryn probably went "oh thank god" and took that promotion with hugs and kisses. she says "the only way starfleet is going to get me back out there is as a hologram"

i imagine her hardcore nesting as well, really settling, making room in her life and just waiting for a simple sign chakotay has packed his things and is ready to move in.

only for the notification to pop up on her desk that captain chakotay is assigned the protostar, set on a course back to the delta quadrant.

but thats fine if thats what he wants, its not like they ever actually made plans, that he made her any promises, she just thought he'd go for that antropology position not another deep space assignment, putting him back into harms way...? but it doesnt matter, if thats what makes him happy, then Kathryn will be there and she will be supporting him through it.

meanwhile chakotay gets promoted to captain, something that once upon a lifetime was everything he wanted, what he worked for, before everything happened - his resignation, the maquis, the delta quadrant, kathryn.... but now... the pips at his collar mean nothing. he looks at the course they've plotted, getting them awefully close to dangerous anomalies and borg space and all the threats he thought he left behind. he thought he would settle down once they reached earth, get that teaching position he's dreamed of back when they fought mind-controlling space worms, but kathryn didn't call. she seems so happy with her new life, the new position. He's watched her from a distance, making a home for herself, without him and he'd be lying if he said it didn't hurt but it's fine. It's okay. It's only ever been about her happiness and if that includes everything but him, he'll give her space. he's learned how to do that. He's good at that. in a way she'll be watching over him now, from afar, as admiral. and her captain.

He'll go back to the delta quadrant, where he was with his family, where he was with the woman he loves, where he was truly happy for the first time in his life, had a purpose, a goal. Peace. maybe he'll find it once again.

So when they Kathryn asks "you're really going back out there." she means "why are you leaving again? why won't you stay?" and when chakotay answers "if i run into any trouble, you're the first one I'll call" he means "i don't want to leave you. but i cant stay here"

and when he goes missing, her previous promise of "never going back out there except as a hologram" gets eradicated because if its him, stranded yet again? there is no barrier she won't cross to get him back.

i am gonna ramble for a second bc i cannot stop thinking about the gem and scott and their creaking hearts.

creaking hearts are such a cool feature bc in order for them to work, they need the wood. they need the trees and the forest and life. and on return it creates life.

scott has nine of them. gem has one. a veteran and the newcomer. both going after the hearts. the desire and craving for having life and the contentment with what you can have. the safety in people and the danger of a sword. why are there so many parallels with the two of them?

I will never be normal about this scene taking place after the end credits.

Because here we are, literally after the end of the story. And here is the comedic sidekick occasional-mentor, having survived his self-sacrifice for the hero at the end of Act II, having been torn open and loved in the dark, having emerged to realize that he can no longer be a blank moldable surface in his own life.

And here is the villain, having lost too early, having been cradled and seen and afforded grace, having emerged to realize that he cannot be the heartless evil he was made to be, having fought and failed and lived rather than died at the victors' hands.

After the story has been told, Pete is not a background character in service to someone else’s story. He is, in this place, the most important person.

After the curtain falls, Vegas is not a villain—and he is not lost, is not abandoned as comeuppance for his terrible flaws. He is a young man thoroughly, despicably, mutually in love.

Because after the finale has played out, after all the chess pieces have been tidied away until the next game, after the credits roll—the narrative roles Vegas and Pete were prescribed lose their sway. And they hold each other in the aftermath.
