Actually I do have thoughts on this. One of the things you mentioned was that bsd was a character driven story but I actually don't think so. Asagiri clearly wants bsd to be more of an action driven manga but the bsd fandom itself is what turned it into a story driven work. There's actually a post on this by @kouyou-arc-when that perfectly encapsulates what I want to say.

The stakes are simultaneously so ridiculously high and also nonexistent. I can't shake the feeling that everything is going to return to normal after this arc is over (everyone we care about will be alive, the world will have been saved), so why should I care about anything that's happening?

To that point -- no one (I care about) stays dead!! So what if Kunikida "died" in the chapter today? I'm sure he'll be back. Dazai also didn't die in Meursault, neither did Fyodor (who actually literally CAN'T die!!). Akutagawa is now alive and well, too! As much as I hate excessive MCD (like in JJK), you need to actually kill off characters sometimes if you're gonna threaten it so often, because then every death lacks emotional impact. I've been, like, numbed to it atp.

There are so many characters I do not know enough about to care about. Who even are the hunting dogs? Bram? Sigma? Asagiri hasn't put as much time and care into characterizing them as the main cast, so when things happen to them I kinda don't give a shit long-term. They were introduced in the middle of a convoluted plot that has taken such precedence over the characters who are supposed to be driving the story.

BSD originated as a character-driven story, and that's what drew myself and so many others to it in the first place. It was bizarre in a charming sort of way. It was about the characters growing and developing as people as much/more as it was about the external conflicts going on. It almost feels like Asagiri has been trying to be too clever about this that he's lost the core of BSD: it's heart.

Similarly, there's a reason this is such a ship-heavy fandom, we live for the character dynamics! But our beloveds have been scattered to the winds for literal years in our time that we've lost most of that interaction we love so much. Give us back our found family dynamics!!

Kind of back to the point about the convoluted plot -- it eels like the characters' intelligence has outgrown us and Asagiri, to the point of seeming impossibly ridiculous. Like what do you mean Chuuya was faking it the whole time and then stopped a bullet from entering dazai's skull and got away from it because of the security camera angle?? what do you mean Fyodor dying by a vampire's hand actually means that he subsumes bram and then he sets off a tripolar singularity to create god and this was his plan all along????

Obviously I don't speak for the whole fandom and these are just my opinions. I'm not saying you have to agree with me or even that BSD is horrible. I just feel like it's kinda lost its way the past few years and I miss the animanga I fell in love with :(

Todays been awful so fuck it, IT fandom unpopular opinions! (And they're actually unpopular for once!).

-As much as I hate to say this, I think getting mad at people for not liking Mike Hanlon is shifting the blame from who's really at fault for this and that's Andi Muschietti. Yeah it sucks that Mike is always forgotten by this fandom but this fandom is dominated of fans of the movie and the movie and book are totally different. If some 13 year old has only seen the IT movies I don't blame them for not caring about Mike because he got dicked over by Andi's racial bias. And don't say "well they should watch the mini series or book to appreciate him then" as if being in a fandom is supposed to require homework. A lot of people only like IT 2017 and that's fine, and they're not less of a fan for that. It's okay to not like certain members of the losers, as long as your reasons are valid.

-I wish fanfiction would potray Sonia and Eddie's relationship (and honestly Sonia/Myra) with more depth. I am NOT saying Sonia isn't abusive, she absolutely is, but i have seen A LOT of ridiculous portrayals of Sonia and it bugs me. Even good fic writers often pigeon hole her relationship with Eddie to just being him secretly hating every thing about her with no complicated feelings at all. As someone who grew up in an abusive household, majority of abusive relationships aren't like that. That's why abusive relationships are so sinister in the first place, they're hard to get out of because you convince yourself you love your abuser. Most kids, especially heavily manipulated ones like Eddie, would struggle with feeling pure hatred for their mother. And that's interesting! I wanna see that portrayed in Eddie's character, especially since he struggles with his own identity and feelings about himself quite a lot already. If you cannot handle a portrayal of an abusive relationship being more than just two dimensional awfullness 24/7, i don't think you should be reading something as heavy as IT.

-Similarly, the way people talk about Sonia, Myra, and to a lesser extent Belch is really gross. IT actually condemns fatphobia in the narrative by having Henry attack ben, and i see people complain all the time about how ben lost wait as an adult but suddenly when it's Myra, Sonia and Belch you can fat shame to your hearts content. I have seen so many posts from people, either roleplay accounts or otherwise, calling these three fat bitches or hogs or even fanfics that deliberatly use Sonia's weight as short hand for her being terrible instesd of letting her actions speak for herself. Fat shaming isn't suddenly cool when it happens to someone you hate. Molly Ranson is a real person and that is her real body, there are probably people in this fandom who even LOOK like Sonia out there. This also applies to insulting the appearance of any other actor btw.

-I think Ben Hanscom in the it 2017 continuity is honestly kind of a creep. He kisses Bev while she's unconcious depsite not actually knowing if it'll pull her out of the deadlights (he didn't even have a reason to think it would work at all), he holds onto her yearbook signature in his wallet for 27 years even tho he literally forgot everything, spends most of IT chapter 2 coping and seething that Bev isn't attracted to him, and never says anything to defend her from Richie spreading slutty rumors about her. The only time he defends her from slut accusations is when its henry and shes there to see him do it. If Henry did any of this you guys would be all over him, but because it's Ben and they play sappy music over it it's suddenly cute and whimsical.

-I also think Richie gets away with a lot of shit that if it was done by any of the antagonists the fandom would rip 'em to shreds. People give me shit all the time for sympathizing with Henry Bowers becaude he's racist and mysoginistic but Richie says many mysoginistic and racist things across adaptations and nobody cares. Of course he spreads rumors about Bevs promiscuity, but in the book he does quite a few racist impressions and bits like when he says "You know the worst part about getting AIDS? Trying to explain to your mother that you got it from a Haitian girl.". Hell, at least Henry is 12, practically groomed into it, and so mushy brained from the pills he can't think straight, what's richies excuse? I don't even care that Richie is gay, does being in the closet justify anything? Did being attracted to Henry absolve Patrick of the fact he killed a baby? No? The same goes for Richie. Ofc you can still like him, but i don't like it when richie fans act like he's all pure and ignore his worse moments just to grand stand.

-It 2017 is actually just as ewwy towards minors as the book. Just because you removed a gang bang scene doesn't mean you aren't still weird with minors. Mr. Muschietti still thought it was appropriate to make a scene where young Bev is forced to flirt with a pedo pharmacist, another where she gets kissed unconscious, and one where her friends oggle her in a bra. Yeah it's cool you got rid of the sewer stuff but WHY ADD ALL OF THAT IN.

-The whole "omg what if the ritual was going to work but richie had to sacrifice eddie as his token instead and thats why it didnt work" is kinda dumb. it implies that the native americans who created the god damn artifact couldn't do the ritual right but these random white guys could all along. The movie straight up says the ritual has never worked and Mike saying he believed it would work because of their connection is treated like it's wrong. Maybe Eddie was Richies token but I don't think that's why they defeated IT and I also don't think it would have worked to begin with.

Peso is a bit of a stress cleaner! Clutter just tends to make him feel a bit more stressed and overwhelmed.

You might assume its cuz hes from the antarctic, which would be a valid thought process, but in my au penguins tend to have two "family" (for the entire community) homes they alternate between depending on the time of year. So it wasn't like they didn't have homes that got cluttered from kids and whatever.

It was more that well... everyone got into EVERYONES business and family and friends just.. ARRIVING at your house entirely unprompted was totally normal too. He didn't mind it, even if being an older cousin did mean he babysat more often (which he didn't mind he loves them and prefers to be with the kids than older adults).

It was really more just that having lots of people, lots of noises, lots of little kids to worry about getting hold of breakable/valuesble things, and etc. Yeah hes so autistic.

So everything being neat and tidy and perfectly put away just makes him feel a big sense of calm and comfort. This also applies to the medbay, which makes sense cuz he was also trained to be neat and tidy.

this guy also freaking LOVES romance movies and stuff. Especially the dramatic ones... he'd used to go watch them to escape the world with his mom when he was little and it was like their little secret bonding activity. But now he's just so freaking invested. He and dashi watch them together <3 (he still talks to his mom about them and they gotta deal with a plot twist every week 🙏 its therapeutic probably)

Speaking of him and dashi they're actually pretty close friends lol. Whether it's just chatting and de-stressing, making fun of inaccurate medical dramas/zombie movies, just sharing whatever family gossip they have, (maybe venting about their relationships with their older brothers everyone in a while), or just windowshopping online.

Dashi also taught peso who to meditate and do yoga. Although him being a penguin that waddles- uh hes had various levels of success and failure, (penguin bones r kinda just in a permanent squat which is why they waddle) but its still fun and ends with them both laughing. Yeh they're very cute friends <3

peso would be so feral over chiikawa, those Japanese comics about like lil creatures that cry over every inconvenience but still have human struggles and are adorable or wtv. I think its be great for his anxiety.

Peso also LOVES physical comfort and closeness alot! Its a big love language for him. So even just close physically proximity is very comforting for him, he loves movie nights and social dinners. Another aspect of his love language is making sure to listen to small details that people mention about themselves. He likes to give very thoughtful or homemade gifts. (Like his stickers <3 its one of his favorite hyperfixations) that also extends to food too! Well made food is such a love language.

Peso also, like shellington, puts glow in the dark stars on his ceiling to remind him of the night sky. He loves little trinkets and decor too, he and dashi love looking for different ones online I mightve already mentioned that tho.

They don't always have great internet and have to basically "download" pages, articles, and etc in advance to have stuff accessible when they don't have connection. Its hard to explain but eh.

also in my au pesos dad may have or may have no been extremely emotionally and financially abusive which mightve partially contributed to his career path, self doubt, and high expectations, but when peso was out traveling in training his dad may have sort of been eaten by a leopard seal and peso did not even feel anything.

He mightve even only managed to feel a small odd sense of relief and felt bad for his mom. Whoops. Also pesos canonical brother pogo, who hasn't shown up ONCE in the series, was kinda their dads favorite oldest son so yeah there ya go they don't talk much yeesh).

I didn't set out to make this happen but as for the type of person pesos dad is lets just say he was inspired by the experiences of some people ik, so this isn't meant to be some stereotype thing I just saw his anxiety and my heart screamed to do this to him. Sorry yall I shouldn't have been mean to peso and gave him a gaslighting, blackmailing, pos dad but its already too late.at least he doesn't have to worry about pinto going through the same anymore. Totally agree, I love it as well. You do end up seeing it more often in a high school setting but like Ace said, it fits soo well in a working environment as well. Or really just any team-based environment. And definitely deserves to be written about more, imo.

I love the dread that characters might feel upon going back, how they might go to great lenghts to try and avoid the people responsible. How they might feel like they're making a big deal out of nothing, and try to hide it happening from others. I love when the threats turn into actual physical confrontations and, like Ace said, I loooove it when it eventually gets revealed to others in the team. The defensiveness that rises from it, and the acknowledgement that yes actually it WAS that bad, and why didn't you let someone know?

So I was wondering why there’s like no bullying whump stories. I saw some people saying they don’t write it and I don’t really understand why.

I mean most whumps are about kidnapping. But I’ve seen people writing about all kinds of topics. But never about bullying.

I feel like maybe it’s just a sensitive topic and a lot of people don’t write it because they have been bullied themselves. Me including

Maybe also because it’s such a common thing. I mean, taking about the most common and extreme whump writings. Kidnapping, murder and torture is not something that many people in this community experienced themselves. (I hope) So bullying is maybe too familiar for some people.

DC x MHA lore

I'll be using the very convenient fact that we know absolutely nothing about any country other than Japan in MHA, beside it be vaguely implied that there's also an hero system. All we know about America is that 1) the crime rate is super high, 2) Star and Stripe is supposedly the n°1 hero, and 3) All Might was there as an hero for some time.

So I raise you this: mha is the same earth as DC, but 150~200 years later, in the 23th century.

The MHA worldview is actually as partial and potentially biased as the Harry Potter canon what with it using at 95% the point of view of teenagers in a school eagerly teaching pro-system propaganda, in a country that is KNOWN for its, huh, racism nationalist enthusiasm. (We see like three foreign characters, whose characterization are like 1) connexion to Japanese character (All Might), 2) foreigner.) MHA!Japan could be actually a closed-border country, with heavy social media control, what do you really know!

So we can make use of the HP fandom big specialty: twisting the world building to show the canon viewpoint is actually super warped.

hero ranking

Star and Stripe is allegedly the US "n°1" hero: that would be only among the heroes part of the official, government-sanctioned hero system, which the JL isn't a part of, because independent and international.

Plus (a bit like the gun policy) there are still a ton of vigilantes in America, cuz people like Batman refuse absolutely to surrender their independence (with valid reasons, when people like Waller are part of said government). Especially since the 'official' heroes don't have a secret identity--at least, not to the government.

So the "heroes" in the popularity board are, yeah, just a tiny, non-representative group.

(I'm partaged whether Luthor is one or not. On one hand, he dreams himself a hero, and preach about democratic control yada yada. On the other, I don't think he would like the control.

US quirk population

If I remember correctly, mha's big statistic makes 20% of the population quirkless, so one out of five people. Which is... definitely not the balance you find among the characters. There is a grand total of four named quirkless characters, and one isn't even Japanese. (I know that the show is about the hero industry and that whole thing is that there are no quirkless in the hero industry. But even then.

=> If 80/20% is worldwide stat number, some countries, like Japan, having a higher quirked concentration, means that other have a bigger quirkless percentage. even more so the case if the world stat of 80/20 isn't calculated directly from the world's quirked/quirkless total population, but as an average from countries' percentage... You can make statistics say anything.

All that to say, there's a bit more quirkless people in the States. But at the same time, there are also other types of meta people, like aliens, wizards, robot and shit.

Either Quirk factor equals metagene (=linguistic difference) or the metagene is an ancestor of the Quirk factor. In any case the term 'metahuman' is broader than just quirked, it also means all people who got power through science or magic, and aliens.

As for the quirk regulations, I think they would be much looser than in Japan (again, like the US gun policy). In Japan, using a quirk in public is forbidden if you don't have a permit. I think there would be more of a FREEDOM *eagle cries* mentality in the States, with the use of a quirk only being penalized if used to do a crime or sth.

the Titans are also an independent international organization, with more than ten Towers across the world, but the first Tower was founded in New York, and the main hq is San Francisco's TT.

What parts of DC survive two hundred years in the future:

Lex Luthor is super decrepit but held alive by money, preservatives and spite. Supers are at various states of aging: Clark is grey, Jon is a youthful adult, and Kon is eternally bound to teen age. (YES, I'm using Young Justice Comics Kon). Lois, tho ;-;

Is there a Flash? Trick question. There is, well, one Flash born in this era, but also Flashes from various timelines casually come and go, as Flashes do.

the Batfam is still around, for the same reason Dick hasn't hit 30 anymore than Bruce has hit 50 in 70 years : their ages keep getting post-dated ten years at a time Crisis after Crisis without anybody (the Bats themselves or the cape community) even realizing, nor questioning that yes, this is the same Batman who co-founded the Justice League, yes, Bats is older than Supes, yes, Bats is 100% human and probably around 50, and yes, Supes is 200-something, what's the connexion between all those questions?

Civilians (read: Gothamites) are in fact aware that Batman have been around for more than two centuries. Theories are 50/50 between immortal cryptid and mantle passed down. On the other hand, they aren't aware of the recurring editing of local billionaire Bruce Wayne and his whole family (and friends)'s ages, and don't make any connexion between the two. (same with the fact that Dick Grayson and friends founded the Titans...)

I haven't read much (or anything, really) about the Arrowfam, so either they are dead or they got the same treatment as the Bats, along with some other key characters like Waller, the Gotham Rogues and any of your fav, really.

The amazing thing about creators being ambiguous about romantic relationships between characters is that it's meant to be able to include everyone's ships as valid.

Even if a character is "lesbian coded" (I hate coding so damn much tho. it was literally only created to give people an excuse to invalidate other ships they didn't like) said character can still be shipped with men because their sexuality isn't confirmed

And to assume that every character is straight unless said other wise is a problem.

But also even if a character has a confirmed sexuality shipping them with a character that goes against that sexuality is still valid.

It's not taking a queer character away. Some people just want to enjoy them another way. And others are still allowed to enjoy them as their canon sexuality.

It's the same as a canon heterosexual ship but people make Headcanons of the two characters instead being homosexual so they can enjoy a mlm or wlw ship instead because that's just what they enjoy.

I wish people could just ship and let ship these days...

Although I'm still very tired of the "coded" bullshit that needs to die. Like yeah it's great if a couple characters give off "yeah we could totally be lesbians" but when used to bash on anyother ship in existence its just toxic (I'm looking at you 31m1k0 shippers) I know I'm mostly saying all this about wlw ships but personally I have yet to see a large amount of toxic shippers for a mlm ship. Not that they don't exist but it must be in a Fandom I'm not in.

Ok WOW!!!! Not gonna lie to you I'm SHOKED!!!

I thought he's gonna be a casanova in this reading but surprisingly im getting none of that, quite the contrary actually.

But lets start from the beginning, so his overall reputation in a few words is social and friendly, hardworking and unexpectedly stern/cold.

He has a very approachable personality, very social, fun and open towards people whenever the moods right for it. I think people view him as someone to easily "get close to" or at least interact with.

But at the same time when it comes to work he doesn't come to play and i believe (not among idols but rather just within the industry) word is, he is difficult to work with.

Not because of bad work ethic or anything - quite the opposite - he's very meticulous, perfectionistic and likes things being done his way. If not, he's not affraid to argue, to stand his point, if you're slacking he's not affraid to call you out and even if he's in his right to do that, i believe people find, he might go overboard sometimes in his obsession in work.

People that already know him see him as a workaholic and extremely focused in his work so that even if he's easy to approach - he's not easy to be close to, as a friend, cuz he's always away working. Thats his absolute first priority.

If someone knows him outside of work, and then get to experience him in a working environment I think they get really really shocked, because they experience a completely different side if him where all of his goofiness and friendliness goes out the door and he gets this scary stern look in his eyes and his whole aura changes, even if he's still polite - his energy and vibe is just totally different.

As for his reputation with the ladies (idols/industry) its not as different. This sternness is there for sure and everyone can attest to that in one way or another.

I believe he's quite popular with the girlies, he's quite liked and many have interest in him romantically or sexually.

But just as many get met with rejection. Thats the part that really shocked me. But i actually believe he doesn't go around sleeping with idols. If he does (which i believe he does🌝😂) he does that with commoners, fans etc.

I think his main reputation among female idols is "keep away from him, you'll get hurt" but thankfully for a whole different reason than i (we) thought. my thoughts on the deal with the toxic ex thing we’ve got going on from a late night noncoherent ramble hot take:

the whole billford shipping is so fascinatingly heinous and foul and complex and infuriating and interesting that i certainly can’t look away and i’m intrigued by seeing more of the billford sexy kinky shipping, like that’s not the right word for it but u get it. and i won’t be mad when i see it again but i will slightly shake my head disapprovingly because i know that no iteration of billford is in any ways healthy.

and as someone who’s been through DV and emotional abuse situations it’s kinda odd to me that ppl are making serious and silly takes on, oh no they’re fucking n sucking, they’re kinky af. (and i know that’s an oversimplification on that regard as well but just like for the point of this i think you get what i mean— like it’s in my hc that they hooked up after karaoke and maybe for a while after that it was like a partnersitustionship and in the year of our good lord and savior casual by chappell roan it’s a perfect addition to the lore timing wise)

but also it’s like, no they’re in an unfair power dynamic. sure they each come to it with unique sets of trauma and experience. but one participant is way older way “smarter” way more manipulative and to me there’s no way for that to be sexy. it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

i also, from experience was filled with an overwhelming sense of peace and relief at the end of the book of bill when ford lets his family into his world, into his inner trauma, and they embrace him. they tell him that he’s not stupid or weak for being a victim of abuse they tell him that bill is a fucking loser! and he is. and the ppl who hurt me were fucking losers and so is every person who hurts people!! and having that moment when he was surrounded by their love, and he no longer felt shame and guilt from what happened in his past— that moment right there is what made the book something i will cherish. that’s a moment in the book where i out loud had a moment where i was like yes, this right here is the heart of what this is all about what gravity falls is at its core level.

like journal 1 taught me that i could embrace being weird and in the end i’ll turn out all right. the book of bill missing journal pages taught me that even tho ive had some shit happen to me and it’s changed who i am and how i see the world, i am more than a victim and if i allow myself to trust the ppl i love and let in the light, my past will not consume me and does not have to continue to be a part of my story. i can dance around in the woods with my niece and mock a triangle statue while wearing witch hats. i can grieve and move on and a lot of that is my internal work with myself like ford with himself, but its not done all alone, when you have love around you in your friends, in your chosen family whether they be by birth or not, that’s how you really learn to let it all go.

so in a way it’s really fucked up, the ship that is, but again i’m not mad at anyone who ships it. i’m sure you all have very different perspectives and thought and reasons that are totally valid, this is just how i feel from my perspective! i will continue to enjoy all the billford edits and fanart that comes across my page. i especially love anything to do with the breakup/divorce/ fiddleford, bill, ford love triangle angle. i love that shit

The agony of being able to go through an entire tumblr tag from start to finish.... ANYWAY. we're back with more food for the hat trick niche ft. rare JigZeni pachislot (zeni acknowledges jigen for 0.1 seconds and jigen forgot he was there even tho he's driving)

One thing I like about rarepairs is the flexibility. They're a headcanon/hypothetical breeding ground of potential without having to sacrifice too much of the character's integrity, because they rarely ever talk/barely have a relationship to launchpad off of! yaay :'D

So let's talk about how! Five how's, actually. Might've gotten a bit carried away with this one.

As with anything involving these two, somehow, some way, it always circles right back around to Lupin. It kind of has to, given their shared obsession and/or dedication with the guy. But that can split up into all sorts of scenarios, with some equally varied results (and some exceptions!)

~ Getting together in spite of Lupin

In which Lupin's basically that "I messed up so bad that I turned my girl date gay/my guy date straight" joke but everyone's still queer and it's just his partner hooking up with his rival because of how much he's been frustrating them both lately (and oops the proxy hate sex turns out to be really good) INHALES. Does that even make any sense.

I'm sorry but Lupin fumbling the ball is just so funny to me. It is a bit deeper than that, obviously, and this'd have some weird love triangle logistics because Jigen and Zenigata are still hopelessly in love with Lupin, in their own ways. But dipping into that is always complicated and messy-- JUST HOW WE LIKE IT.

This one definitely has the most jealousy on all fronts. For me, there's always this little asterisk on the JigLup/LuZeni pairings because someone's getting left out. Tell me Zenigata's chest wouldn't ache every time he watches Lupin and Jigen escape, an arm slung over the other's shoulder, cheek to cheek, laughs fading off into the cold, lonely night. Tell me Jigen wouldn't hate waiting in the Fiat for Lupin to lose his dogged hunter, mind wandering as to why he's taking so damn long. He grits his jaw when Lupin finally saunters up, victoriously spinning yet another pair of handcuffs on his pointer finger.

There's a silent rivalry for Lupin's attention that they might not even realize is going on until they blow up at each other about it.

It's difficult to tell if Lupin is being genuine or just messing around, especially for Zenigata. He asks Jigen how he deals with him, how he deals with.... everything. Just everything. The "will they won't they"s and the "does he really mean it"s. How does he stay so collected all the damn time. Jigen says he doesn't have a single friggin' clue. Maybe they make out sloppy style about it. Maybe they keep meeting up to vent, drink, exist in each other's company. During chases, Zenigata keeps dipping after Jigen instead of Lupin more and more often. Lupin's standing on a rooftop Pulp Fiction John Travolta style wondering where the fuck everyone went.

Ohhh jealous Lupin, where have you gone. Where did the tms writers hide your unchecked narcissistic ego. The other points after this support Supportive Lupin in some capacity but this one does not. The slow-burn's done slow-burning but it ain't over yet, baby. There's trouble in paradise and its name is Lupin the Third. He is Not Enjoying This. The two guys that are always looking at him aren't looking at him anymore and that just won't do. Drama ensues.

~ Getting together because of Lupin

Matchmaker Lupin! This is if Lupin's relationships with Jigen and/or Zenigata are more platonic-leaning (which is totally valid). The paired fics in Disreputable Company nail this dynamic perfectly imo. But as far as my own separate take goes....

They're both just so. So emotionally constipated. Intentionally or not, Jigen's been screwed over in the romantic interest department to many times that he's intentionally reduced his acquaintance list to how many fingers he's got on his right hand. Zenigata practically unloaded an entire clip into his foot as far as maintaining healthy family/friend relationships go. Spoilers for Zenigata Keibu, but he 100% knew what he was saying when he told Haruka he'd go back to her once he caught Lupin (I can never be yours), and that Zenigata's supposed to be the freest one! Bound not necessarily to Lupin specifically, but to The Chase forever.

Anyway. Jigen and Zenigata are Isolated. The fact that someone would consider them attractive is so foreign that they'd think its some kind of sick joke or ruse to screw them over instead of anything that could ever be even remotely genuine. They need someone to shove them out of their little self-made paranoia bubbles, and Lupin just loves to meddle in people's businesses. I dunno. I just think he'd think it's funny.

*dramatic finger point* "haha zenigata, you are banging my partner!!" "you... you tricked us into our first date? made the reservations?? th- the tailored suits???" "lu you friggin roller-skated out in a waiter outfit and immediately bought us the most expensive top-shelf booze they offered. not even remotely conspicuous about it" "lol yeah. good times"

He's just happy two of his favorite humans are finally getting laid for once, y'know?

~ Getting together for Lupin

Jigen and Zenigata are forced to team up. Okay, this scenario only goes down if 1) Lupin goes missing or is KO'd for a prolonged period of time or 2) the Truce demands they separate for a while. On top of seeing this play out in other fics, my good friend duke and I have been messing around with (a variant of) this idea for a while now (aka they've been letting me run around in their au Rampant and Unchecked. ty duke).

In ""canon"", if these two were to become at the very least amicable towards each other, this'd be the way to do it. In all honesty (and my personal bias for them aside), I'm genuinely shocked they haven't done this before. Not even an episode, tms? That 4-ish minute block in POTP is all you're giving me? One bar chat in the kobayashi sendoff ep. Okay. I'm not miffed i swear

Like I mentioned in this previous post, the idea of the two of them being able to function together without Lupin as a crutch is upsetting at first. They're used to following him to the Ends of the Earth and they're used to him living rent-free in their heads. They've convinced themselves that they're hopeless on their own, that if he disappeared for good they'd just go back to being two husks vaguely shaped like humans meandering around with no meaningful north star to head towards. Don't get me wrong, if the situation was Bad, Goemon and Fujiko would be devastated, too. But they could move on, albeit with a heavy heart. They're kind of known for heading out on their own should the situation call for it. But Jigen and Zenigata are in for the long-haul for better or for worse, whether they like it or not (they do not).

They're on edge the whole time. Hostile towards each other and passive-aggressive at best to any unfortunate folk they have to interact with on this stupid side quest they've been unwillingly shunted onto together.

It helps immensely that they're both "cut that out" people to anyone but themselves, because they can be that for each other. There's a lot of bickering/conflicts of interest and methodology. "You're being too harsh", "You're one to talk", "You're so goddamn stubborn", "You're such a hypocrite", etc etc. But holy shit they're so freakishly effective together, to a frankly terrifying degree-- maybe even moreso than with Lupin because they're honing the fuck in and nothing else-- no banter or bullshit-- and that's what gets them through to the end. Maybe it helps them come to terms with whatever sort of issues they've got going on, maybe it doesn't. Bare minimum, they come out of this with newfound understanding of each other. At max, uh.... see the point after this next one.

~ Lupin-adjacent

A shift in fixation. The slightest glance, the slightest exchange of eye contact for a second too long, the briefest moment of consideration, and the thoughts start spiraling. This is "in spite of Lupin" without the spite. The urge to know absolutely everything about someone, down to the marrow, just gets shifted a little bit to the right onto another guy. It's just them, in-between heists, with barely any mention of the Chase and anyone else involved therein. Their own little adventure away from the status quo. It's weird at first, sure, but it's new and exciting and real dang nice having things not revolve exclusively around him for once. It's a shot for Jigen to mess with Zenigata for once and the closest thing to a willing vacation Zenigata can get. Win-win! Well. Sorta.

The loneliness, though-- that's what makes itself most prevalent during the in-between times. They really don't have much left outside of the Usual. Forgetting the bare essentials, days blending together, moving around the masses like a ghost.... it's familiar, and it's common, not being sure whether they actually like someone or they're just desperately lonely. Zenigata wallows in it, Jigen shoves it down. They've got images to keep. but getting noticed for what they are is simultaneously the worst thing to ever happen and the highlight of their day. Real wholesome bonding material, ain't it

"I tracked you down for only you". "I dragged you into this issue because I want you here". "You get it".

~ Secret fifth thing

*points at playbohz mag* "lol wouldn't it be funny if zenigata was jigen's type??" *points at y series, miyazaki's zeni, island of assassins, that one manga where they put him in a tshirt, etc* "oh my god zenigata is jigen's type."

It's just a one-night stand lmao. I feel like I see this one a fair bit too, mostly because it's super duper simple and doesn't require a crap-ton of emotional angst setup just to get them into the same bed. It's the above point diluted into, like, an afternoon lmao. It doesn't have a lot of depth by design. Curiosity gets the better of both of them, plain and simple. They get buzzed enough at a bar, skip off to some motel to do what they gotta do one time and never speak of it again.

A part of me likes that, but another part of me in the deep deep recesses of my psyche is hollering "TACKY YOU GOTTA TURN THIS INTO THE SPITE BULLETPOINT!!!"

NO. For this one they get one nice hookup and THAT'S THAT. Sorry not sorry.

Maybe it's easier because there's actually something to decipher. There isn't some esoteric idea of "Lupin the Third, Gentleman Thief"; a mystery man(?) with a million little gadgets and masks and smiles; this unwavering, unpredictable force of chaos that likes taking shiny things from one place and hiding them somewhere else over and over again with no real rhyme or reason.

It's easier to find solace in turning to the guy next to you and going, "what do you think that is?" than in going up to "that" and poking it with a stick in hopes it'll give some sort of answer. "That" won't. "That" likes watching you guys flounder around together too much :)
