I've always had a hard time articulating this, but the aspect I love most about hearing other people's trans experience is that it seems to be about forging an identity for yourself based on what makes you the happiest, whether that's clothes, hormones, pronouns, hair, general vibes, etc. You get to pick the parts that matter the most to you. Gender identity is like food; it's always better when you make it yourself.

Regardless of how you read Deryn's gender situation, I think this bit here really contributes to that idea. Deryn is fighting against the gender presentation that is expected of her in order to be really, truly happy. This is an identity forged with blood, sweat, and tears, but also joy. And I love it.

Months ago when she first showed up in the comics, which was a little the time I began really getting into them (I got into the IDW comics a ton during the Metal Virus era). So fun thing: I actually know the lead writer for both Dragon Age Origins and Dragon Age 2. His name is David Gaider, hes a good friend of my partner's. IIRC he was one of the first openly gay men to work for Bioware and that influenced a LOT of the writing he got to do on Dragon Age was being open about his sexuality. He's given panel discussions on this, and truly truuuuuly loved writing for the dragon age world SO MUCH. But Bioware is the company they are and he moved on before the potential for layoffs could happen. Which was smart. He's a very good man, and such a sweetheart.

Dragon Age has always been queer. Dragon Age has also always been "controversial" for it. The homophobes and transphobes now throwing a fit over The Veilguard's queer cast are no different than than the assholes who came before them.
