resisting the urge to make ‘back to december’ about bluedam not because i genuinely think it fits but because i have terminal ‘all songs i ever listen to at any point ever are about my blorbos’ disease. by the way i don’t even particularly ship bluedam but i do think they were v cute and also incredibly h*rny and i think they should’ve gotten to at least make out with each other before they went to be with the respective loves of their lives. like honestly what a waste

i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again. i understand finding adam’s behaviour sometimes a bit infuriating. like, i do, but if you hate him for it we definetly won’t get along🤗no adam doesn’t accept gifts/any offers really from gansey obviously because his entire inner monologue is ‘i worked my whole life for this’ if he just let gansey give him stuff that would erase it. adam loves him so much - don’t pretend he’s just ungrateful, when the only time he lets people give him things is when he doesn’t need them (he hasn’t been working for them) or the one time he suffered transient global amnesia due to stress…he didn’t move into monmouth because he’s spent his entire life working to the moment he can leave that house and it would just erase everything he’s gone through to get there.

I was thinking about the line in BLLB where Adam ponders what he would do given Ronan’s power and now I cannot stop thinking about a TRC power swap AU.

Gansey who’s a mirror/amplifier. That’s how he continuously finds people tied to the ley line—they’re drawn to him and him to them. Gansey whose journey is about learning to cut himself off from others, something that came so easily to Blue. Gansey who always wants to give and give to his friends and does so just by existing near them, but can’t help but feel like they don’t feel the same for him because they can’t give back in the same way.

Blue who’s a dreamer, misfit in a family of psychics, who doesn’t know anyone like her. Was her father like her? Blue with the world at her fingertips, self righteous determined to change the world, but unable to control her own power. Sensible Blue who wants to dream sensible things (and cures for cancer, and ways to save the rainforest, and cures for magic killing kisses), but her dreams always come out just a bit too uncanny and whimsical to be anything but magic, or are downright unworkable in case of the cursed-kiss-removal.

Ronan who is a magician, born to be a sacrifice to an entity from his parents’ dreams. Ronan who grows up isolated on a farm, at whim to a manifested forest-god. Ronan whose identity is so intrinsically tied to magic—it’s what he was made for, isn’t it?—that having it torn from him is like taking his life force. Ronan who has access to the future but doesn’t want it. Not like this. Not without the people he loves. Not anymore.

Adam with the power to command whatever he wants with his voice. Does he use this power in his ambition to escape his life? Or does he suppress it, determined not to rely on something so ephemeral to make his way out, when he should be able to do it entirely on his own. Adam who is so sure he knows what’s right and now has the power to get others to fall in line. But would he?

one of my favorite things about trb is the way after blue and gansey find noah's corpse the chapters start to feel like darker reflections of earlier ones. the contrasting tone and circumstances of chapters 2 and 33 work to support the gansey = camaro metaphor as well as emphasize the importance of gansey's relationships with ronan and adam.

chapter 2: the camaro breaks down in henrietta, whelk drives by and presumably ignores gansey, and ronan and adam arrive to help both gansey and the camaro refuel. it's midday, the sun is strong, and the car radio plays music. adam helps gansey get the car running, but warns that the fix is temporary and the issue will return.

chapter 33: the camaro breaks down outside henrietta, whelk drives by and stops to confront gansey, and gansey is alone. it's nighttime and dark, with the only illumination coming from artificial sources, and the radio has stopped working.

in the latter chapter, gansey is alone with the upset roar of the engine, which is to say the upset roar of his thoughts. in light of his insomnia, gansey's anxiety is probably also louder at night, hence blue "making him quiet" during their midnight phone calls. and while this next observation is more speculative, ronan is continually linked with music, tapes, recordings, sound, etc. here, when the radio has stopped working, ronan is both malfunctioning and absent from gansey's side. gansey's current resentment stems from having to compromise his principles to save ronan from expulsion (from both aglionby and monmouth), and it reaches a breaking point when he can't bring himself to seek catharsis via ronan-like recklessness. he is stuck. with no ronan and adam to help gansey sort through his restless and cluttered thoughts, he's left alone with the sound of the failing engine and his frustrated mind. without ronan's encouragement to take risks, without adam's analysis of gansey's current predicament, the engine (and gansey's brain) remains a stagnant "enigma." to break down, in all senses of the phrase, is more harrowing without the illumination and warmth of the sun, of friends.
