okay fr the selfship part: mentioned it a little bit when replying 2 the other ask u sent, but it’s a worry stone made out of rhodonite (which looks a lil like this), bc he knows how interested I am in gems + rocks n stuff like that but also bc he wanted me to have smth to fidget with in case I forgot my lil lanyard of rolling beads when we went somewhere! it’s smth I just run my thumb along bc it’s smooth n soft n fits perfectly in the palm of my hand. a lot of times if I’m in an uncomfortable situation I can’t get out of, having that w me helps a lot bc it’s grounding n it reminds me of him 💞💞

fr the character analysis part: KJSKFS YEAH I love getting 2 talk abt that bc I actually think abt it quite a bit. as u said, William and Lawrence have always been vaguely aware of each other on account of being connected thru their interactions w John, the doctor who he felt wasn’t kind/sympathetic enough n the insurance agent who denied his (EXTREMELY experimental, mind u) foreign treatment request. I’m not sure that they ever interacted face-to-face PRIOR to John’s death, but after William survives his test it’s just kinda like... who else does he have 2 talk to that might be able to understand even the tiniest bit what he went thru? he loves Pamela to pieces, of course he does, she’s his only family - but she didn’t see what he’d had to do, doesn’t rly KNOW like Lawrence would.

but I still think he’d absolutely be Cautious, bc even w the desire to be understood n maybe even have someone he could confide in, William knows now that Lawrence has been helping John for quite some time - as we see in 3D and as u said, Lawrence is the one handling new disciples, something that only John ever did; Amanda didn’t have her own apprentices, n Hoffman sure as hell didn’t either. that, n William doesn’t know how much involvement, if any, Lawrence had w his own test - that’s smth that wld haunt him a lil, I think. it’s hard to be comfortable around a person who is not only directly involved w the person who felt it necessary to put u in a trap, but who Also may have been the one to put fucking explosive bracelets/anklets n tattoos on u + SEWN A KEY inside of u, which is INCREDIBLY violating of his bodily autonomy. that could warrant a whole discussion of its own tbh.

but. Lawrence is the closest John ever got 2 having a TRUE successor (which I have conflicting feelings on; my reading of Lawrence in SAW 2004 was not someone who wld have joined up w someone who caused him so much pain, but fr the sake of exploring this, I think tht after going thru something as horribly traumatizing and irreversibly changing as he did, he sought that life of control n routine that he felt he had prior to his game, and well, John could certainly provide that,,,) n William would likely know this. Amanda’s dead, Logan is off doing who knows what n living his life, Hoffman is only doing it out of a weird sense of obligation?, and Jill isn’t rly a disciple, just some1 who’s been dragged into it too. (I think William n Jill actually would’ve gotten along tbh,, it’s a different thing entirely whether William would WANT to interact w her.)

I think Lawrence wld want to be able to reassure William that he had no hand in what happened to him (I don’t even know if Lawrence is the one who fitted the bracelets/did the key?), but he like. wouldn’t even know where 2 begin bc how can he explain that in a way that William could ever rely on? how could he ever convince William that he truly wasn’t responsible when all the other man wld have 2 do is look at all of th ppl he assisted John in securing/operating on? Hoffman was the one who put William in his trap, but Lawrence doesn’t know he’ll ever b able 2 prove that in a way William can believe. n I don’t think he’d expect William to believe him, not at all, but I think Lawrence at that point truly doesn’t have anyone - he and Alison are divorced and she has Diana, Adam isn’t around obviously, John + Amanda are gone, Hoffman doesn’t know he exists, so who does he have? I think he longs fr that sort of connection, even if it Is forged thru smth as terrible as what they were both individually put thru by John - they have tht common ground of being involved in his diagnosis + the way he responded to them (petty fucking grievances... kramer I will literally knock yr teeth in u fucker) n being ppl he considered partially responsible fr his downfall in a way (Lawrence wasn’t “kind enough,” William said no to a highly expensive and experimental international treatment that they weren’t even sure wld WORK). and like, not necessarily 2 the same extent, but they were both physically altered by what they went thru. Lawrence is missing his foot. William has scars + tattoos that he could get covered up, sure, but the experience isn’t going away. the scar on his side where the key was hidden is never going away. Lawrence’s prosthetic is functioning but the fact that he cut his fucking foot off isn’t going away. n that’s not even TOUCHING the lasting mental effects.

so I think William wld be feeling rly lost. he just doesn’t know what to do. he doesn’t know if he can even go back to the life he led b4 (if he does, it’s not for a very long time) n he has a hard time looking Pamela in the eye bc he feels personally responsible fr her having been there too + bc of what he’d been made to do to so many ppl. he feels alone, much more than he ever has before, n that’s saying smth bc his personal life was already extremely solitary bc he felt it was safer for him + his career. no one could possibly understand what he went thru, bc nobody saw it. nobody saw the way he tried so hard to keep every1 alive, the way he tried to help the people he worked with + CARED FOR even if he had 2 put himself thru pain to do it (holding onto those pulleys until his shoulders were almost DISLOCATED fr Addy n Allen, burning himself w the steam so Debbie could get thru the maze, the entirety of the shotgun carousel). Tara + Brent didn’t see him sacrifice himself fr his coworkers, n neither did Pamela. nobody knows. William wants some1 to connect with, n that just doesn’t seem like a possibility given that what he went thru in there is knowledge that only he himself + Hoffman carry.

but Lawrence knows. he understands n he's the one 2 kinda make that offer, to just be like “u don’t have 2 trust me right now, or even ever, but I understand n if u want some1 2 talk to, I’m here.” bc what does he have to lose? Adam is gone. Alison n Diana are gone. he’s by himself. and so is William, though he has Pamela. they’re both men who went thru smth unspeakably terrible bc a dying man wanted 2 play god n they came out of it much worse off than they ever were b4 John “helped” them. n William is just like. how much worse could it get? after Jigsaw, what could possibly be worse than what he’s already gone thru? so he’s just kind of like, “okay, we can work this out, I can’t say I trust u right now but maybe I can in the future. we can do this together. we can help each other.” n that’s how they end up meeting for coffee or breakfast/lunch/dinner every so often (coffee meets are at least weekly), n it’s just kind of like. the reassurance that some1 has seen the very worst parts of u and are still around. the relief of knowing someone sees u and knows how hard yr fighting to rebuild a life that’s been shattered into a million tiny pieces. n they’re struggling against that current together, and maybe it starts in a place of “I have no one else so I might as well chill w u,” but eventually William and Lawrence kind of fall into this uneasy friendship. they’re there for each other. William calls Lawrence when he has a nightmare that keeps him up fr hours after, shaking n w his heart beating out of his chest bc he doesn’t want to remember. Lawrence spends th night at William’s place every now n then bc he can’t be alone w his thoughts n the phantom pain in his leg just won’t quiet. they meet for coffee. they have breakfast sometimes. Lawrence has clothes n a toothbrush at William’s and vice versa. they’re in this together.

n maybe that escalates into more (which I believe wld only happen after they get 2 a point where they’ve discussed, at length, John’s legacy n who exactly would be continuing it + if anyone WLD be, n after Hoffman is “disposed of” in a sense), but even if not, they both know they Have Someone who looks at them n doesn’t see them as a monster, not the horrible person John thought he needed to “fix.” they both carry scars, both physically n mentally, frm what they went thru. they’re both struggling to get their bearings + Lawrence is still coping w what he’ll need to do after John’s (and eventually, Jill’s) passing. it won’t be easy, but they’re not walking alone. they’re wading thru the mud together, hand in hand, and fr William n Lawrence, that is enough.

Alright, a second major arc for both Helena and Tim! Let’s dive into it!

For Helena:

Let’s start off with the fact that I SHOULD have read thru to #6, bc that one capped off the previous story arc v nicely. Helena Got Her Vengeance

now, technically she DIDN’T directly kill the man who like, Pulled The Trigger on her family (bc the guy who ordered the hit in the first place did that himself) BUT she did have a more active hand in THAT guy’s death. so im calling that a Win in the Vengeance Category. YOU GO HELENA

Did a brief detour with the JL adventures she participates in. nothing major to report on that front but im cautiously optimistic for what it’ll foreshadow for how well she plays with others lmao

as far as the second major arc of her solo goes: if the first arc was vengeance, this next was was Fallout. both in the sense of the legacy her father left behind, and in what almost became of NYC (and yes, she’s def operating out of NY for now, not gotham which!!! is interesting!)

the A-plot for most of it is taking down a serial killer who figured out the cypher to her dad’s ledgers and was a pretty satisfying read on its own? but then...

theres a b-plot abt a mostly drug-based gang trying to get their hands on nuclear technology and their means of doing it just... put a really shadow on the A plot to me.

like its cool to see the lines Helena’s drawing and her handling something so big!!!

but at the same time, there’s so much loss that occurs before Helena’s even aware of the situation and just... it really rubs me wrong in a way i cant fully articulate yet. but we’ll see. all early stories are flexible i suppose when her origins are going to be retconned away too.

And onward to Tim:

so the big things about the Robin mini-series and the story-arc that Dixon followed it up with... or at least what really drew my attention. was the inclusion of Shiva

bc Tim acknowledges that she’s like... actively killing people while she’s helping him and Rawlins.... but goes along with her training anyways??? and doesn’t??? yknow at least like? bargain with her to Maybe Not Kill While He’s Around???

when i first read this i was like MY characterization? but eye didn’t do anything.. and then realized james dashner and whoever wrote the screenplays didn’t really do anything either so.

i feel like (much like Avatar, 2009, Oh, Wouldn’t You Know) tmr focuses more on building a world than building its characters, now i don’t really mind this as i happen to be a fan of Places and Things, but i AM annoyed bc memorable characters = relevancy and thats a setback for what i’m trying to do here

i’m literally not even saying the characters are bad i like them but they needed rebranding. if thomas had some sort of unique physical distinction synonymous with who he is and his backstory, destiny, and legacy maybe we’d have a maze runner theme park at universal studios rn you know.

ok ok but the funny thing abt tmr is it’s basically a teenage boy hivemind..... the only thing they CAN think about most of the time is how to not die, they don’t seem to individually represent anything, and they all have their fucking minds wiped so there’s nothing about their past to shape them or motivate them or anything like that.. in this post apocalyptic hellscape the core goals of the heroes AND the villains are just going to be about survival and while that’s not uninteresting, none of that makes it easy to create distinctive characters. ahdjdkkd sorry i’ll stop myself and talk more about that later and now i will actually try to chat abt the tmr characters !!

okay so i mentioned none of them having backstory which is a lie because THOMAS, hello, actually has a backstory, and it is completely wasted on him which is so funny to me. like he’s a very in-the-now person who willfully ignores the fact that he has a past and honestly that doesn’t matter bc it barely affects his current reality at all besides people from WCKD already knowing who he is. like i strongly think if thomas was just some random he would still do everything the same and everyone would still be trying to kill him. thomas (alright besides his magic blood i’ll give you that) is not actually special but it’s like HE is the only one who knows that. everyone’s like why is thomas so special why is thomas different, but i think (again, besides the blood) he’s genuinely not, he’s literally just stupid. it’s implied maybe he used to be really smart but that obviously didn’t work out for him because now he’s just a newborn calf who’s dumb and brave and impulsive and it WORKS !!!! he’s naturally very curious, which is why he’s a good protagonist for exploring our fun settings and (more importantly) another reason why it’s SO funny he does not care to know about his old life . and thomas is a circumstantial leader. i think most YA protags in things like this don’t want to be the leader but are good at it once they try and usually NEED to be the leader for whatever reason. thomas leads when it makes sense for him to lead, like when they need to take immediate action or someone needs to yell “RUN!!!!” otherwise the leadership role goes to someone who is capable like alby or minho or newt or if they’re lucky enough to find literally any grown up who isn’t evil it’ll go to them. i think it’s nice that thomas pushes when something’s important to him but otherwise is fine with whatever he’s given. if one were to use cats 2019 terms i would say most of the time thomas is victoria if she was the jellicle choice but he’s jennyanydots when he’s alone (he sits and sits and sits and sits)

i think it’s significant TERESA was the only one who got her memories back and in the movies she doesn’t really become a person until she finds her purpose from those memories and her former self’s morals. thomas was like “yeah there’s no way i’m fucking with WCKD again because they suck. they put me and my friends in a killer maze. i ain’t reading all those memories. i’m happy for me tho. or sorry that happened.” but teresa needed to know and needed to justify her choices. if thomas doesn’t think he’s different, teresa definitely thinks she is! and she is unique, once she gets her memories she’s SMART AGAIN she’s a teen scientist wunderkind which i will never stop thinking about like how does she really feel about thomas who she KNOWS has lost all intelligence on PURPOSE and is on the right side of history because of it. what teresa did wasn’t even that bad i guess she had noble intentions but she betrayed the boys and that is not on. teresa is what always sunny would call “the useless chick” for most of the time in this fun little series but her shining moment is when she entered the maze and was like IMMA START THROWING ROCKS AT ANYONE WHO IS NOT DYLAN O’BRIEN (a very accurate and impressive representation of a teenage girl). and can i mention the dynamic between thomas and teresa would be a lot more interesting if they were twins. it’s the drama of the last of your family making a decision completely opposite your own instead of some random coworker you have no real chemistry with

BRENDA is just like Cool Action Girl i have no thoughts on her but i don’t dislike her. i don’t think we like ever see her interact with the whole maze group but they’d all be scared of her because she’s not fucking around and i think she would be mean if needed. she’ll fit in

uhh she learned how to cook from home-grown ingredients and in lasting bulk so she mostly eats stew and potatoes. every time she goes to freeside she gets that “mystery meat” from the stand in front of the gate despite the fact that its transparently radroach meat. she doesnt like the meat from the ultraluxe (even before she finds out it might be people, its fancy and garnished and she dont trust like that) but she loves their brahmin cheesecakes so she like, settles kdsjfksd

she works for house, owns a small farm (after a while, in spring of 2282), and does various quests around the mojave for money. she was a courier for 8-9 years and she loved it, so id say thats her ideal job, but she’s past it. she’s very happy with where she is in all 3 of those jobs !

her biggest fears would probably be claustrophobia and getting buried alive (because benny). she has nightmares abt it, like 2 the point where every so often she wakes up and just Has A Good Sob. she has very low charisma (1) and very high endurance (9), her strength is also pretty good

she thinks truly madly deeply by cascada is the best love song ever written. she also listens to radio new vegas & a holotape cass gave her that’s mostly feminist anthems from the 20th century and 2 instances of mad about the boy

oh god she would fucking hate the pre-war world. she would probably just go find a horse tbh sdfjsdkf what else is there to do!

she has brain damage from the bullet. it didnt affect her intelligence or (for the most part) her memory, but she does have, like. chronic headaches, brain fog, dizzy spells, things like that. like i said before, she also has nightmares & claustrophobia from the same incident. as for pet peeves, she hates people who talk a lot without saying anything or try to sound smart for no reason. she has no problem with talkers as long as they like,, Say Something dsfdksfj

she grew up in a very small (very catholic) village, so im not sure if she exactly went to high school?? but she did attend school. she was sort of a loner, she had a single mother w no siblings & shes like 6 feet tall so both of those things made her a little bit outcast ksdjfksd. i mean she. She Was A Horse Girl what else do i have to say

god i dont know!! uh… oh omg she thinks astrology is something vulpes made up and when she hears arcade talking about it she out of bodies

rosa’s a very simple person, she mostly just wants a good life for herself. stable work and a stable life make her happy. a lot of her philosophy throughout the game is based on the fact that she’ll do (almost) whatever her employer asks her to, thus her being a house courier. most of her relationships are based almost entirely on trust, which is another major philosophy of hers 

24) What inspired you to create them / how did you create them? Were they originally a fancharacter? What was their personality / design like when you first made them?

honestly??? i read so many fics (especially f!courier/vulpes) where the courier was a Relateable Pretty Girl TM that i probably just wanted to make a female courier who had actual substance and weight. rosa is married to (ex-legion) vulpes so she rlly does largely serve to subvert the genre in fnv fic

25) Who is the most important person in their life? Why? Who is the least important to them (that still has an impact and why?

i mean. her husband probably skdfjkdfs. she’s been travelling with vulpes for a long time and she’s had to put her life in his hands a lot of times because of that, so he’s grown to be very important to her. mr house is a close runner up. i hate to say this but arcade is probably her least Impactful TM companion skjfdkds she barely travels w him 

26) What kind of childhood did your character have?

i say some of this in the other questions but like heres all of her backstory in one i guess kdsjfsd. rosa was raised in small catholic village somewhere outside nevada, i havent decided on what state its in bc im fucking dumb as hell. her family (like great grandmother type shit not her personally) & a few others came up from mexico years ago to get away from raiders, made a village and Kabaam. her mother had her, and then a second baby who was stillborn, and her father disappeared a few months after this happened. her mother raised her there until she was 20 and she signed on with the mojave express as a courier in an attempt to get out of her village and find Something To Do With Herself TM. she was a little outcast growing up, not totally isolated but certainly not very popular, and it caused her to be a very independent person later in life.

she fidgets sometimes but i wouldn’t say she stims. clenches her fists when she’s nervous. she likes to smoke and chew tobacco (especially when she’s stressed out) but it’s only a minor addiction

first thing that came to mind was to gomorrah, in her Fancy Riot Gear and ranger’s helmet, with raul. no idea why but like have a fun night bb sdkfjdslkf

depends on why she’s angry, but usually she’ll either start ranting at whoever she’s mad at (which never lasts long) or just go silent and tense up. she’ll also grumble. i mentioned this before but fortification hill was probably the only time she was so mad she was just yelling at everyone skfjkdsf

she has a lot of scars! the most visible one is a cobweb-shaped scar on her forehead from when benny shot her. she also has another less prominent scar on the side of her face from Some Shit. various scars on her torso and arms from various sources, another bullet scar on her arm from raiders, maybe more. there’s a particularly bad scar across her ribs from being slashed w a knife (raiders again)

BC I love EAH and the chacaters but... it could've been more so things I would do:

-Destiny explanation?? w the Book?? like does it change /you/ or just make things happen so the story unfolds?? and the fake book was confusing I’d drop it. Also the implications for the next gen w/o destiny

-EAH explanation: why is Legacy Day in the middle of Sophomore year?? (narratively I know to provide a way to ensure fallout but??) and is it only open a few years every 20 years for the new gen??

-more look into society like the implication of free media in a world where your life is planned out!

-Holly and Poppy didn't need that much focus but rlly the ‘heir and the spare’ idea was interesting and Poppy could've been our glimpse into the destinyless peoples lives and being looked down on and a hilarious counter to all the destiny drama

-EXPLAIN THE BEAUTY FAMILY?!?: if Sleeping Beauty sleeps for a 100 years how is her niece alive??? it was mentioned EQ messed w it is that why EXPLAIN!! and how two sisters could have different destinies is that just how the family works?? did one of them somehow get the destiny they didn't start w?

-And the Hood-Badwolf family: do Red and Badwolf’s parents know? And I don't see how they could've gotten married tbh

In Darling’s diary she says she doesn't think she has a destiny and just got in through their family’s prestige... I think if Ash’s prince had been a character a Gaston “entitled to have you” type to have another role subversion... or possibly Dexter, just to make it simple

-as for Daring and Darling, im assuming the Beast is a wildcard role as the lesson it teaches works best as a surprise, so maybe it just said so and that's why Daring thought he was Apple’s prince

-I’d also be curious abt a Dark Swan character: maybe an affably evil type who likes villainy but acts kind to contrast Duchess’ ego and... v deeply... hidden good heart.

Honestly...

I just rewatched the entirety of the hero killer arc and I’m so fucking sad abt how slept on todoiideku is, even platonically. I don’t think enough people appreciate their bond or what they went through together. 

Both Todoroki and Midoriya voiced evident concern with Iida’s behavior following the sports festival.They could sense something was wrong with their friend!!! They both wanted to help him but didn’t know how!!! They both feel guilty for not saying something to Iida sooner! They feel terrible for not knowing how to help their friend who was so clearly isolating himself & lying to them about his wellbeing!!! 

You gotta be pretty fucking close to with someone to tell when they’re lying about that sort of thing!! (Especially when they are putting a significant effort into appearing fine, which Iida most definitely was!) They could notice the subtle nuanced differences in his emotions & demeanor!! Noticed it despite the fact Iida is not an overtly emotional person as it is, and Todoroki, someone who also struggles with social & emotional cues due to past trauma & his lack of social exposure as a child, noticed it as well. Hell, he even relates, he says

“You’ve got a lot going on behind the scenes in your family, too, huh?” 

(very clear poke at the pressure Iida must feel at carrying on his hero-family’s name and legacy)

And then continues in one of his only monologues of the series thus far (his first being with Midoriya in the sports festival arc just episodes prior)

“Iida, I’ve been worried about you since your older brother was attacked, because I know well the face of someone who would act on pent-up resentment. I also know just how narrow the field of vision can get for someone like that.”

Todoroki is referring to not only endeavor’s age-old resentment towards all might and how he allowed that to consume his life, even leading to Todoroki’s planned conception, but also to himself!!! 

He’s referring to his own resentment for endeavor! He’s referring to how he limited himself for so long by focusing all his efforts on rejecting endeavor by refusing to use his left side in combat!!! And yet here he is saving his friend’s life by using both his left and right side to fight a villain!! Using his power, his quirk to the best of his ability as a hero. He let go of that anger, that resentment and moved on with his life to better himself! He doesn’t owe endeavor shit & he knows it! But he knows that objectively endeavor is the best hero aside from all might, hence why he is number 2, and decides to take advantage of his personal relationship with endeavor by interning for him so he can become the best hero he can be. 

Again, he says,

“That day, I told her everything about what had happened and about who I am now… She said that for me to move forward without anything holding me back would make her happy and be her salvation (referring to visiting his mom in the hospital) The old me would definitely not have been able to choose my old man’s agency for the internship. It’s not that I’ve forgiven him, and I have no intention of doing so. It was just so I could experience the fact that he is the number two hero with my own eyes and body and accept that… Everything was so simple! But even though it was simple, I didn’t see it… Just a few words, those few words…..”  (referencing Midoriya’s “it’s your power, isn’t it?”) 

By hearing those few words from Midoriya, Todoroki realized the error of his ways. It wasn’t that his left side was his old man’s, his left side was his, it was his own quirk, regardless of where it came from, so long as he used it how he wanted to it would always be his and his alone. The only thing of his old man’s that he seemed to have inherited was his blind-resentment. He resented his father (rightfully so btw) so wholeheartedly that it consumed him and his desires to be a hero. All he focused on for so long was becoming everything endeavor wanted him to be…. but without him, his help, or “his” quirk, just to spite him. 

It wasn’t until those words that he realized he was becoming exactly who he feared most by allowing his resentment to consume his every waking action. That the best thing he could do to reject endeavor was to rise to the top giving it his all, becoming the hero he wanted to be by listening to the encouragement of his classmates & mother. (this is shown through the reiteration of his mother’s line “But you want to be a hero don’t you? It’s okay for you to be one. As long as you have a future you feel strongly about”) 

He knows he can be a hero of his own, he wants to be a hero, despite the fact it’s also what his father wants. It’s okay for him to want the same thing endeavor wants so long as he wants it for the right reasons, unlike endeavor. He can relate to Iida because he feels familial pressure to become a great hero. He also knows what its like to let resentment consume all of your thoughts and actions so much so you lose yourself in it, becoming exactly what you were so focused on not becoming. Becoming what you resent most.

For Iida, this is becoming a fake hero, someone unworthy of his brother’s name or of the title “hero” at all. For Todoroki, it’s becoming his father. 

Iida mentions after the hero killer incident that what Stain said about him was right, that he wasn’t a real hero because a real hero wouldn’t have been focused on revenge, rather saving people. (As Midoriya & Todoroki, people he looks up to and admires as heroes and friends, were focused on saving him and the hero Native). 

Iida sees the error of his ways, and Todoroki’s words

“If you want us to stop, then stand up! The only words I can say to you are: Look properly at what you want to be!” 

are eerily similar to Midoriya’s words towards Todoroki at the sports festival. 

That line to Iida is the same as Midoriya’s is to Todoroki. Just as Midoriya’s words move Todoroki to action, considering we see him use his left side moments later during the sports festival, we see Iida spring into action moments later to defend his friends and save Todoroki from the blade of Stain. (He also takes 2 fucking knives for him, knives that will give him permanent nerve damage in his left-hand mind you). Todoroki knows what it’s like to lose sight of your goals and to have your thoughts spiral out of control. He also knows the effects words can have on someone in a time of crisis, and despite not generally being good with words, Todoroki makes a significant effort to get through to Iida as Midoriya did for him.

And lets not even get started on Midoriya and Iida’s bond. Iida is Midoriya’s FIRST friend at U.A. even before Uraraka.

At the point of the hero killer arc, they have already been through a lot together and view one another as very close friends. They walk home together, eat lunch together, and hang out with Ochako regularly. Midoriya voices his concern for Iida outright, with Ochako by his side, and says to him before everything went down with stain 

“If you ever feel hopeless, make sure you let us know”

He could just sense Iida’s mood. He at first didn’t want to say anything to Iida, for fear of overstepping (probably intermixed with some self-doubt) as he mentions that he didn’t feel he could say anything to Tenya about it because he had not said anything to Midoriya first. But instead of allowing Iida to suffer alone, he puts aside his own worries and self-doubt & puts his friend’s needs and happiness first. He simply lets Iida know with those few words, we are there for you, so if you ever feel like you can’t handle what you’re going through alone, or like it’s all too much to bear, let us know and we will be there. We are friends and friends take care of each other through everything. 

Iida, unfortunately, continues to bottle up his emotions after the gesture, not wanting to worry or bother his friends. But we see the worry evident in Midoriya & Todoroki’s faces after this interaction and at Iida’s tight-lipped response to Midoriya’s show of support.

AND THEN, in the middle of a fucking attack on Hosu city Midoriya thinks not of himself, but firstly of his mentor, gran torino, who he just witnessed hop out of a fucking train after a giant villain that bears resemblance to Nomu (the villain that almost bested his other mentor) and of Iida, who is doing his internship there. He should be scared shitless, considering he knows the power of the Nomus and just watch one rip off the side of a train, but instead, he jumps out of the train and runs to save Gran Torino and try to find out if Iida is okay. 

Upon hearing Tenya’s name being yelled by Manual he detours away from finding gran torino, coming face first with even more danger, in his efforts to locate Iida. He notices Iida is not with Manual which causes him even more concern for Iida knowing that it is very out of character for someone as responsible and diligent as Iida to disappear in such a situation. Thinking on his feet, he immediately puts the info together and realizes that the only thing that could have motivated Iida to flee the side of his mentor would be the opportunity to find Stain. And in that moment of realization, we see the fear Midoriya has for his friend in his eyes

(I mean we have honestly only seen Midoriya look this terrified a handful of other times, both in the anime & manga)

He sprints off after this, with no clear direction, only knowing he must do everything in his power to ensure the safety of his friend. He goes looking for Iida, using all his knowledge about the Hero Killer to find him. And he does all this knowing full and well just how dangerous Stain is. He knows how many pro heroes he has killed, he knows that he is no match for Stain, yet all he can focus on is saving Iida, making sure Iida is okay, getting to Iida in time. 

When Midoriya does eventually get to Iida, he’s taken aback by Iida’s pleas for him to not get involved. He’s shocked that Iida could think the situation has nothing to do with him, after all, Iida is his friend, and if it involves Iida and his well-being, it involves him by default. He even says in response 

“If you say that, then heroes can’t do anything! There are a lot of things I’d like to say, but I’ll say them later. It’s like what All Might said: Meddling when you don’t need to is the essence of being a hero”

Which not only reflects on Midoriya being a natural born hero, but also on him being a great friend. He didn’t want to bother Iida, he wanted to give him his space, but now he has seen what allowing Iida to shrug off his offers of help has led to, so in this moment he makes his intentions to involve himself more in Iida’s well-being mentally, emotionally and, at the moment, physically, very clear. He will no longer allow Iida to handle what he is going through alone, a good hero, and more importantly, a good friend, wouldn’t allow that. They would keep pushing and fighting to be let in when they see their friend isolating themselves. 

AND THEN

THERE IS THIS MOMENT

WHEN MIDORIYA THINKS HE IS ABOUT TO WITNESS ONE OF THE CLOSEST AND BEST FRIENDS HE HAS EVER HAD IN HIS LIFE BE MURDERED RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM AND HE IS PLEADING WITH STAIN TO STOP. (HONESTLY JUST FUCKING KILL ME, IM A WRECK AND SO FUCKING EMO OVER THIS, THE TEARS ARE REAL BITCH)

Thankfully, Todoroki, being the only person to take Midoriya’s text as a sign of distress, at least seriously enough to move to action, appears to save the both of them, using his left side first to stop Stain from killing Iida. 

Once everything is said and done we see the three of them in the hospital and one of the first things Todoroki says to Iida is

“You’re amazing to have been able to face him…”

he understands and instead of ridiculing Iida or being angry with him (surely knowing he must feel enough guilt and shame for his actions as it is) he let’s him know how brave it was of him to confront Stain like that, to stare into the eyes of the man who almost killed his brother, and challenge him. hi yes don’t mind me in this fucking puddle of tears

AND BELIEVE IT OR NOT IM NOT DONE LMAO

Because next, we see a kind of amazing response from Todoroki after the three of them are chewed out by the chief of police for technically breaking the law. Now… all of us upon seeing this scene we were like “damn right! you tell em shouto” 

…. but have you ever stopped to consider how odd it is that Shouto of all people was the one to react in such an aggressive and outspoken manner? Shouto who up until this point has shown almost no emotions. Shouto, who is always regarded as the quiet stoic character. Shouto, who thinks rationally & never lets his emotions get the best of him. Shouto…. who was raised in violence and focuses every fiber of his being on not being aggressive like his father. Yeah… he’s the one who gets angry and has something to say. 

Like just take a fucking look at his face. He has never shown this much emotion in the anime or manga ever…. not in front of other people at least and certainly not in such a deliberate way. And yet here he is, losing his cool and about to throw fucking hands with the chief of police to protect his friends from punishment. He doesn’t even wait to hear him out all the way before he starts crossing the room to quite literally fight the man. And then after he is told they will be let off of punishment so long as the incident is not made public he’s still pissed at the outcome, knowing his friends deserve better. 

So, not only is their bond as extremely close friends that depend on one another physically and emotionally solidified during this arc, but Iida gets an insane amount of character development as well. 

He may be the class president and resident perfectionist of 1-a, but even he has flaws and gets angry and doubts himself just as anyone else does. He just loves his brother so fucking much and his world is completely falling apart because his brother, the very person who inspired him to become a hero, who he has admitted to modeling his career at yuuei after, whose footsteps he wishes to follow, was just injured so severely he can no longer continue his career as a pro-hero. And he just… hides it all. Acts as if nothing happened, like the whole foundation of his world isn’t crumbling beneath him. Tells his classmates it’s no big deal and apologizes for worrying them.

And it’s all just so sudden…. one moment he’s worrying his head off about tying for 3rd at the sports festival and the next his brother, his hero, is permanently paralyzed & forced to retire at the age of 30.

Before he knows it, Iida, who never breaks the rules, is running through the halls of a hospital to his brother. He is so fraught with worry and sadness for his brother that he ends up crying at his brother’s hospital bedside while he asks Iida to carry his name, something Iida probably never imagined would happen in all his life. 

That’s so much pressure to bare at such a young age. Iida is strong, but to have the weight of the name of your hero placed on you as a teenager, to feel as though you have to live up to that name and the expectations attached to it when you’re still figuring everything about yourself out, when you’re still trying to figure out your place in this world, as a hero, as a student, as a friend? It’s just so much to deal with and Iida is so fucking brave for putting on a strong front and trying to keep all that from his friends. Yeah it was stupid of him & he ended up acting irrationally as a result of it, but that takes so much fucking strength, and he’s so young and deserves so much. 

AND THEN AFTER ALL THE SHIT THAT GOES DOWN WITH STAIN, he fucking learns from it. Instead of allowing the crippling fear and anger he felt from before back in, he finds strength, inspiration, and resolve in the actions of his friends. He makes a vow to get better with Midoriya… he makes the decision to forgo nerve transplant surgery & live with permanent nerve damage in his left hand to serve as a reminder of that promise & of his mistakes that night. All after an extremely traumatic experience with the very person who put his brother out of commission. With the person he watched his best friends bleed at the hands of. For all he knows they could have been killed in front of his eyes (and, according to him, it would have been his fault. As it is, he blames himself for their current injuries). But instead of isolating himself further he opens up to them, trusts them, apologizes profusely and is determined to right his wrongs and simply do better in the future.

Which, by the way, it’s not easy for an autistic person to open up to anyone about something so intensely personal… about all his self-loathing, brought on by the words of Stain, his fears, and his doubts, no matter how close he is to them or what they all just went through. Social interactions are hard enough for Iida, he is constantly missing social & emotional cues and is made fun of for this. They even show it in this episode that Iida has had trouble with it since he was a small kid. They show Tensei calling him a robot & asking him why he isn’t picking up on the message he’s trying to send him, he asks Iida why he’s taking everything so literally… like bitch… hello. 

He even has the courage to admit that Stain was right, the person who he despises most in the world, for the time being, was right about him. Stain said, 

“Being taken in by the hatred before you and trying to fulfill your own desires… That is the furthest thing from what a hero should be”

Which is true, and we all know it. It’s also what makes Stain such an interesting and infuriating villain. Because his reasoning is solid, but his methods are all wrong. Iida recognizes this and instead takes the words to heart promising not to “forget himself in anger” ever again.

Idk about y’all but idk many 15-year-olds with that kind of resolve, morals, and humility. He just has such a big heart and works so fucking hard to prove himself. I love him too much and I’m so happy he has such great fucking friends like Todoroki and Midoriya to support him. 

I’m sure I could write like 12 more pages about Iida, Todoroki, and Midoriya & the bonds they share, especially if I got into the manga but imma just leave it at this for now because this is really the event that solidifies them as important people in each other’s lives. They are all people that really had no one in life before they met each other. None of them had any notable friends before they found one another, and yet here they are discovering the bonds of friendship together and growing into amazing heroes alongside one another. They all shared an extremely traumatic and life-changing experience yet found their own resolve in one another and pushed each other to do better and be better.

actually nobody asked but here i am, ready to talk abt my science kids for whom i would lay down my life, aka the wylan/kuwei parallels that are never discussed but should be 

i mean first of all, the most obvious similarities: the two youngest of the group, the ones that are most on the outside by virtue of arriving last with no pre-existing connection to any of the other dregs (aside from having done odd jobs for them, in wylan’s case), them spending the majority of ck not only looking identical but also given the role of ‘scientist’ by default because they’re the two with the most knowledge

i mentioned this in the tags of my other post but kuwei is to ck what wylan is to soc.  they’re both kept around to serve a purpose, neither get pov chapters so we learn about them exclusively through interactions w other characters, neither features quite as prominently as the others do (although wylan does more towards the end because like.  wesper build-up) but are nonetheless a crucial part of the storyline 

both of them have complex relationships w their fathers, this came to a Tipping Point for both of them around the same time (they were only like 15/16 someone protect them??).  kuwei had a father who loved him and wanted to keep him safe but inadvertently put him in danger; wylan had to escape because the danger was his father.  this leads to both of them ending up on their own in a strange place which they’re ultimately taken out of by the dregs

this is presumably also around the same place in the timeline for them both since by the start of soc wylan’s been in the barrel a few months and yul-bayur was killed (presumed captured) several months before, at least to the best of my knowledge

they’re the only two out of the dregs who don’t have an immediate (or any) connection with friends or family that they actually want to return to outside of the dregs.  wylan is reunited with his mother in ck but spends all of soc believing she’s dead, and doesn’t seem to have anyone else he wants to reunite with, certainly nobody he mentions.  kuwei is set on going to ravka, but not because there’s anyone waiting for him, just because it’s safe and he’ll be able to work on a parem antidote with other grisha.  he never talks about friends or family and given his description of shu han (“we live a frightened life ... it was never home”) it’s not a stretch to imagine he doesn’t really have anyone to talk about

following on from the last couple of points: they’ve both inherited issues from their fathers that neither of them asked for but have to live with.  wylan, the van eck heir who’s talented at so many things except the one thing his father wanted him to be able to do, made to feel like a failure because he couldn’t read, unable to live up to the Ideal Heir van eck wanted, and then almost killed because, through literally zero (0) fault of his own, he couldn’t do it.  and then kuwei, son of the chief chemist who invented parem, held prisoner and made to recreate something he didn’t even come up with, that he couldn’t fully remember the formula for (while trying to stall progress because he knew the damage that would come if he succeeded), he’s still being held up to his father’s legacy but in a very sinister way.  

(kuwei does say he thinks he can do it, but there’s still a vast difference between the experience of a 15 yr old inferni who helped in the lab versus a scientist/fabrikator with decades of experience, you can’t just ask the former to do the work of the latter and expect the same result)

and neither of them fully escape from it - when people do business with wylan, they know they’re doing business with van eck’s son, he’s carrying on from his father even if he’s leaving the corrupt business side behind.  and what’s the whole reason kuwei wants to go to ravka in the first place?  to develop an antidote to parem, a problem he didn’t cause that he’s not even fully qualified to try and cure but he’s going to anyway

they’re both coming from situations made more dangerous for them because of who they are, something they try to hide - wylan’s being raised to follow in van eck’s footsteps but he can’t read, something he keeps secret for as long as possible because as far as van eck’s concerned, that makes wylan useless.  he literally tries to have wylan killed because of it.  not for any other reason than that he can’t read, something that’s neither wylan’s fault nor does it make him any less good at basically everything else.  meanwhile kuwei’s being kept in the ice court, where they torture and murder grisha, trying to recreate something that’s going to do even more harm, but he’s grisha too, something he obviously has to keep hidden from the fjerdans (remember what happens to grisha who don’t use their powers?  how hard do you think that was to keep secret in the ice court of all places??  not to mention he had to do the same thing in shu han.)

if i think of more points i’ll add them later, but tl;dr please stop and consider the similarities here for a second because i did and haven’t stopped crying since

gay media: why we still need gay romance (an essay)

this is almost two thousand words long and there’s no good place to put a read more break so i put it fairly early on so that people don’t have to scroll through this whole thing on mobile but right underneath there’s a really good quote from david leviathan’s two boys kissing that u should read if ur gay even if u don’t wanna read the whole essay 

 so it’s a little over done ik but i was talking to my mom abt gay/straight media and she said the classic “why can’t we just have christmas movies instead of gay/straight movies?” and

you know the thing is gay/straight romance has a very different set of tropes. there’s rarely gay love triangles, etc., because we have “closeted” or  “homophobic parents.”

uhh david leviathan’s two boys kissing (2013). there’s this section that’s always stuck with me. 

Neil has two DVDs, two bottles of Diet Dr Pepper, cookie dough, and a book of poems in his backpack. This—and Peter—is all it takes for him to feel profoundly lucky. But luck, we’ve learned, is actually part of an invisible equation. Two blocks away from Peter’s house, Neil gets a glimpse of this, and is struck by a feeling of deep, unnamed gratitude. He realizes that part of his good fortune is his place in history, and he thinks fleetingly of us, the ones who came before. We are not names or faces to him; we are an abstraction, a force. His gratitude is a rare thing—it is much more likely for a boy to feel thankful for the Diet Dr Pepper than he is to feel thankful for being healthy and alive, for being able to walk to his boyfriend’s house at age fifteen without any doubt that this is the right thing to do. 

He has no idea how beautiful he is as he walks up that path and rings that doorbell. He has no idea how beautiful the ordinary becomes once it disappears. 

If you are a teenager now, it is unlikely that you knew us well. We are your shadow uncles, your angel godfathers, your mother’s or your grandmother’s best friend from college, the author of that book you found in the g*y section of the library. We are characters in a Tony Kushner play, or names on a quilt that rarely gets taken out anymore. We are the ghosts of the remaining older generation. You know some of our songs.

We do not want to haunt you too somberly. We don’t want our legacy to be gravitas. You wouldn’t want to live your life like that, and you won’t want to be remembered like that, either. Your mistake would be to find our commonality in our dying. The living part mattered more.

so this whole book is fantastic mind but this is from the very beginning and i think it really hits on why it’s so hard to just have “romance movies.” like putting aside representation issues: it is impossible to tell a good gay romance like a straight romance. because even if its not about being gay, it fundamentally changes the experience. even if they just go on a basic dinner and movies first date, that is surrounded in this sense of, “they did that!” if you fail to think about how they must be nervous to make it obvious they’re on a date, even if they’re out and proud, you’ve missed something common to the Gay Experience.

i.e., even women in safe areas, secure in their personal defense, are usually nervous about walking home at night alone. because that’s a fear they’re taught to have. gay people are taught to be afraid of homophobia. because it can be violent and get us hurt.

lets look at the notebook:

The novel is framed by the titular notebook. The story that the reader engages with is the same one that an elderly Noah reads to Allie in the Creekside Assistance Living Facility when they are in their eighties. Allie does not know who Noah is, only that he comes to her room every day and reads to her. Each night, she forgets who he is and what he has read to her. Noah loves her and enjoys his time with her but also holds out hope that the story will restore her memories and bring her back to him.

The teenage Allie and Noah meet one summer in the 1930s, in the small town of New Bern, North Carolina. They fall in love and promise that they will always be together. But at the end of the summer, Allie leaves with her family, and Noah does not hear from her again for fourteen years. He writes to her every month, but his letters receive no reply. Allie will later learn that Noah wrote to her but that her mother intercepted the letters and hid them. Allie’s family is part of the southern aristocracy, and her parents do not believe that the lower-class Noah deserves their daughter. 

After fourteen years, Allie returns to New Bern to tell Noah that she is engaged to a good, charming, handsome attorney named Lon Hammond. But she and Lon do not have a passionate relationship. Allie and Noah quickly fall in love again. Allie’s mother figures out why her daughter is in New Bern and visits them at Noah’s house. She gives Allie the letters she hid and tells her to make whatever decision is best for her. That is where Noah ends his written account of their story and the novel returns to present day.

In the final chapter, Noah reveals the circumstances of Allie’s diagnosis and relates a summary of their life together after she left Lon and came to New Bern to be with him. She has since become a famous painter, and they traveled the world and had five children together, with four surviving.

Allie remembers who Noah is after he finishes reading, and understands that they are the characters in the story from the notebook. But her dementia quickly returns, and she forgets, shouting for help and sending Noah out of her room. Days later, Noah has a stroke that puts him in the hospital for two weeks and paralyses the right side of his body. When he returns to Creekside, he visits Allie on the night of their forty-ninth anniversary. She opens her eyes and calls him by name, then kisses him. As the novel ends, Noah says that they are going to heaven together, at the same moment.

lets just imagine that noah is nora real fast, and lets pretend it isn’t set in a homophobic era. right just move it up to 2017 or something. the gays have marriage. things are generally pretty good. just so that’s not even a point of comparison.

okay so beginning part works fine. still adorable.

but now they’re teenagers. in ~1970. but ignoring that, because again, i’m trying to ignore homophobia as much as possible. so first off, like, actually the sheer happenstance of two lesbians finding each other? i’m a Gay but if my situation is similar i imagine that’s pretty low.

now the summer romance part is fine. still very cute. no complaints there. mm i love me some happy romance. will they won’t they is for nerds. but. i mean what works better as a story beat? allie’s mom destroys the letters because nora is lower class or because her daughter is a lesbian.

yeah.

even now, if allie’s mom is part of the southern aristocracy, there’s some absolutely insane cognitive dissonance to her ignoring her daughter’s gayness because nora is lower class. that’s. argh.

and even if she’s super progressive, tolerant southerners exist, so like yeah that’s a chance, i’m still unconvinced she would overlook the gay part because of class differences. i haven’t read this & i’m skimming spark notes but it just. it feels wrong to me that that would happen. that someone concerned with relative social standing wouldn’t be concerned with gayness.

moving on, allie and uhhhh lets go w laura instead of lon? yeah allie and laura.

okay so first of all, i’ve established allie’s mom kind of needs to be homophobic, but if they get around that, then this is mostly okay. i see no glaring, “this would not happen like this if they were gay.” maybe its slightly less likely? but it’s a minor thing.

okay so allie’s mom is destroying all these letters from nora. case 1: allie’s mom is homophobic.

did nora not know? because usually it’s pretty damn obvious. in that case, why is she sending letters? that’s just poor form allie go date laura she seems to be treating you right.

case 2: allie’s mom is really classist.

but the thing is: gay people are good at doing forbidden romance. it’s in our genetics. u know. for survival. if you’re telling me two strapping young lesbians can’t figure out how to pose as best friends? i mean lord there’s a new hulu movie coming out based _entirely around that premise. _i just. like. there’s them choosing to break up because hiding a relationship is hard. there’s them being found out, i suppose (but again, what sensible gay person is that bad at hiding a relationship? they’re lesbians, it should b reasonably easy for them. people b erasing wlw like that), but i just.

why would you? let on u were dating?

so at this point the premise of the rest of the movie is pretty much broken. because case 2B: nothing changes; doesn’t make a lot of sense.

so. allie, a young lesbian, probably aware of homophobia at this point, doesn’t say, “hey yeah my parents suck & don’t approve so we have to keep this on the dl is that a dealbreaker?” nora, also a young lesbian, also probably aware of homophobia, doesn’t say like “yo r ur parents cool w me?” doesn’t pick up that “hm ur parents seem to not respect me so i do not want to interact” and then say “look, allie, bb, u gotta figure this out bc this isn’t gonna work”?

nora just…sends letters to allie? that’s what happens?

and i mean like the ending itself is mostly okay. some questionable holes but like i’ve made my point by now.

because being gay, even in accepting circumstances, is surrounded by a history of homophobia. our actions our colored by it. our perceptions of normal and our methods to solve problems are shaped by it. what we think of when we say romance is formed by what we know about society.

there’s a lot of unrelatable stuff in any romance movie. they’re a form of fantasy. but the reasons for why are really different depending on the context you’re looking at them under.

and don’t get me wrong, i want the same love stories we get in straight media in gay media. i don’t want to be thinking about homophobia. i want to be focused on the two cute gays who _won’t kiss dammit, can’t you see you feel the same way? _because who doesn’t?

but if the reasons they won’t kiss is because they’re not sure if they’re reading the signals corectly?

i mean that’s a meme i made obviously but my point is, that’s the dilemna.

tldr: gay and straight romance is fundamentally different even ignoring homophobia because gay experiences are shaped by homophobia.
