i am truly so sick of people—both outside and inside the star wars universe—remembering anakin fondly. this man, though not wholly responsible, played a major hand in the destruction of the jedi order and the death of democracy itself. he slaughtered children, brutally executed his peers and superiors, and continued to hunt them down throughout the years. he is remembered as a good master, as a good leader, but… was he? was he a good master when he led the execution, the genocide, of ahsoka’s people? their people? yes, it would have happened with or without him. yes, he was groomed and manipulated by palpatine. but he, in the end, choose to commit those heinous crimes. he chose to forsake the galaxy, forsake his community, all for a person who genuinely did not want that. it is the very thing the jedi order so deeply tried to teach him, to not let your love blind you, and to not forsake everyone else for your love. he chose his path, and to free him of any blame while putting that blame on the very people who tried to help him (the jedi) is a disservice not only to the tragedy of his character, but the tragedy of the jedi order’s fate itself.

Hi, it's me, once again not being over the masterful character work that happens to El in The Golden Enclaves.

I mean. I think we all been suspecting since the get-go that El's prophecy was dramatic irony at work, and we've all just been waiting for the other shoe to drop the whole time. From a plot perspective, it had been coming. But El is suffering so bad from not knowing she's a character in a story.

Because the prophecy was purposefully worded to fool her.

Deepthi set out to scare El, because she needed that fear to protect her from Ophelia. She made El terrified of going evil. And that fear gripes her like a vice, blinding her, to the very end, to what's happening right in front of her.

Our bright, calculating, shrewd heroine who's always running calculations should have realized much earlier she was bombing enclaves when she killed mawmouths. But she's been terrified her whole life that she's gonna go evil, and so she's so paranoid, watching the direct damage she's doing right in front of her, waiting for the final temptation that breaks the maleficer's back, that she never considers she would cause destruction by accident. She's convinced she'll one day purposefully hurt people, that it never occurs to her, not even once, that she would do it unknowingly. With the best of intentions? Sure. With no idea whatsoever she was hurting someone? No.

Even more ironic is that, this has happened before. El has no idea she destroyed Bangkok in book one, but she knows she killed a fellow student in book two. She knows she accidentally set someone's flaying spell back on them! She knows she killed someone without knowing it, and yet the possibility that that's how the prophecy will come true never, ever, ever occurs to her until the very last second.

El is so scared of hurting people on purpose, she has never trusted herself enough to think it would happen through no fault of her own.

My personal biggest pet peeve regarding analyses of Belos (obviously aside from “he’s just evil and analyzing him at all means you support his actions” and “he deserves redemption actually”) is that so many people take his hatred of witches completely at face value--as simply being the result of his indoctrination into witch-hunting as a child in Gravesfield, that these are just the beliefs he was raised with and that he never grew to see past his prejudice like Caleb did. But that is such an oversimplification of his character, and it also ignores what is in my opinion the main driving force behind all of his actions: Caleb himself.

Belos doesn’t think all witches are evil because he was raised to be a witch-hunter. He HAS to keep himself convinced that they are, because if the witches are not evil, then he has two realities to face: 

Caleb left him of his own free will, not because he was under a spell or led astray by the devil.

Belos murdered his own brother, the only person he ever loved, for nothing.

And these CANNOT be true.

Belos’s need to be the hero who saves humanity from witches is not the reason he killed his brother, it’s the result of it.
