Hey! I'm not sure if you read my initial reply to Chloe's post? I replied to her without any callousness. I was not rude in anyway. I've also never once mentioned anyone benefiting financially from anything. This is a passion project for both of us and making any kind of financial gain is never going to be in the cards. That's not at all the issue.

I know it's near impossible to contact literally everyone who has ever posted a photo or a video and ask them if they can be included in our projects. That's not at all what this issue started with. There are still active people in this community who are providing new content for us every day - which is amazing! It is not hard to reach out to these people to ask if they would like to be included on Chloe's website, rather than just copying their files and dropping it on the site. That's what the issue is! When we reached out to Chloe to remove this content, she became very hostile and rude. This is not at all about crediting random livejournal or deviantart accounts (tho, you should be lol but that's besides the point.) This is just being courteous to your fellow fans who are active in the community and have put in the time and effort to supply everyone with content. I have personally invested a lot into sourcing magazines, flyers, stickers, etc as well as purchasing a high grade scanner in order to provide everyone with high quality content that they can print for themselves, read, do whatever they like! I feel like this should be available to all fans. I don't do this for anything other than I enjoy it. Having someone take the full quality scan for their own website without at least acknowledging where it came from isn't the best way to form a community. Chloe did remove my scans when I asked, so I'm not sure why she was so combative in regards to the merch archive. I've never once made assumptions about anything - I don't think Chloe was being malicious, I just think something was inherently misunderstood and she became very defensive and rude.

Yeah...that's my wallet finding out I'm going to have to spend at least $4,000.00 to run inZOI decently on my computer. The thing is that you can no longer play these newest games on "integrated graphics chips". You have to get a dedicated card. My wife wants to play Dragon Age 4 (The Veilguard) which is coming out on October 31, 2024. And those games are just as intense on hardware as it is with inZOI.

I'm calling HORSESHIT on that right now. I'm saying it's more in the realm of what inZOI and Dragon Age the Veilguard is putting out. You don't get that kind of gaming experience with the specs Chillblast espouses. Especially on the processor and graphics end of things. After all, on the FS forum board, the recommended specs being tossed about just for FS2020 is the following:

Intel i7-12700K CPU

Z690 motherboard

32GB DDR4 3600mhz RAM (upgrades for this on the site are very cheap, but like you said I’ve seen a couple instances where this RAM outperforms most others)

1TB SSD

Nvidia RTX 3080 Ti

Liquid cooled, nice case, 850 watt power supply, etc

Frankly as far as I'm concerned, I'm tempted to go all out and perhaps go so far as investing in:

i9-13900K CPU

64GB RAM DDR4

4TB SSD

NVidia RTX 4090

Z790 GAMING X AX

at least a 1000watt power supply so that I can run peripherals like scanners and other photographic requirements...on top of just my gaming shit.

...at minimum.

I'm sure there will be detractors going, "You don't need that kind of hardware to play Sims 3...or the current games"...well, the main thing in building a system is that you have to shell out for future proofing (as much as technology development allows at any given time) so that you don't have to spend as much money upgrading your computer system on an yearly basis as opposed to once every three to five years and that Sims 3 is not the only game that I play. And the new releases coming out are that graphics-intensive...

I play SWTOR currently and I'm finding that the game stutters especially when there is a lot of people on a server. I want to minimize that so I'm thinking the more RAM I have and the better the video card, I'll get a little less lag out of it and that will help when I'm taking on Imp or Pub forces whichever side I'm playing against at the time. That and maybe improved graphics to the point where it looks semi-realistic. I'm also planning to get Dragon Age 1-3 and then Dragon Age 4 as well. Plus there are a few other graphics intensive games such as Digital Combat Simulator World (DCS: World) as well that are attracting my attention. I may even get into Call of Duty (depending on the feasibility of the user controls.

Mass Effect drives me absolutely friggin' nuts when it comes to controlling my character Shepard - she's a "femShep". I have to key-bind my movement keys to keys that I'm familiar with in order to keep from going bug-frickin' mental. That also messes with the shoot key too. I'll get there someday. In the words of the ever-immortal Maverick Mitchell:

So in a nutshell, these latest games if not forcing people to upgrade to a better class of gaming PC, will find that a lot of people with restrictive budgets may just drop out of the PC market and try to find it on console (if they play console games) no matter how restrictive the console games are in comparison to the PC versions as opposed to spending $4000 on a new gaming system. A standard PS5 is $499.95 CDN as opposed to spending 10X that much trying to set up a PC to be able to play these newer games. Add a couple hundred dollars buying a hard-drive for these consoles will maybe bring that amount to around $600.00 still much cheaper than buying a whole new PC. Dragon Age the Veilguard will only be released for PS5 and PC - No plans in the works for XBOX Series X as far as I know. And for now, inZOI is PC release only (with an intent to release to console later on down the road - though who knows when that will be) Why though am I looking at a new PC on a restrictive budget? Well, it's because I want to play the games in their full graphics and be unrestricted and potentially moddable states. Does it mean I'm going to have to save a lot of money while waiting on a new PC? Yes. Do I have the patience to wait? Yes...I'm in my fifties, I've waited this long...might as well.

I wanna talk about fanart in the early days of the internet.

 My one friend it up quite nicely,

I would like to expand on that. 

Back in the early days of the internet, and I'm talking, like... before 2000, the common things were forum threads, as was mentioned. However, at the time, rather then fanart, the thing that was actually most popular were role plays for me? Fanart has never been new, but it wasn't really seen as a "thing" like it is now. People didn't really make a lot of art of media they enjoyed. Like, there definitely was some, but you have to remember that the quality was really different back then. People didn't have access to digital art tools unless they were professionals. That started changing around 2000-2005 or so, but even then they were the minority. Most people had to draw with their mouses or trackpads if they wanted anything digital done, unless they came from a rich family. People who did fanart mostly did, like, really silly humor pieces rather then illustrations. Memes and really derivative stuff. And the popular people who could draw digital anime art and speak English could be counted in the double digits and were almost exclusively on deviantart. I think I got my first wacom tablet in 2008, for about $200 from a bestbuy. That was kinda the only way to get it back then. So back to role plays, what im getting at is that people didn't really make a lot of fanart so what they did is they wrote stories with their friends. What people did is say "naruto rp" and then, like, take anime characters they found off google and claim it as their oc. Everyone did that. No one drew their oc because everyone was mostly kids and no one really knew how to draw anime art at the time. Fanfiction was even bigger then it is now. There also wasnt smart phones back then and old phones didn't really upload pictures to the internet, and when they did it was bad quality. you basically had to own a scanner to upload anything or get lucky with a phone that actually kinda worked for that (most didn't). What that means is a lot of awkward traditional art thats hard to see and, frankly, not super well drawn most of the time. I guess what I'm trying to say is that derivative works were always around but as far as "fanart" it wasn't the thing that it is today by any means.

it's kinda weird to talk about but i guess a lot of people nowadays don't even know this stuff. anyways, I used to roleplay on neopets which was literally the THING for anyone growing up at the time. That was most people's integration into roleplaying, actually, since it was mainstream. Afterwards, I migrated to a forum site called playanime.com and it looked like this

At the time I thought the site would last forever because there was no context for things on the internet disappearing at the time. But it turned out that it was a public server hosted by this one couple who liked anime and they couldn't keep up with the cost of the growing site so it had to be shut down after a few years. All of the roleplays and friends I made vanished after a while without being fully documented afterwards and I'm sure I'm not the only one. It was a wild west of websites where no archiving was properly done and most servers were hosted by ordinary people with passions just like that. Here's an example of the type of "fanart" that was being shared back then. Circa 2005, it's a picture of a blorbo from a show being shipped with one of my friends self insert oc, which I drew and shared privately to make them happy. Back then, all I had was original Windows Paint and a scanner. This is a pretty good example of the standard quality back then and what "fanart" looked like.

I got a copy of the new Frozen 2 book “Explore the North,” but rather than do my usual thing of taking mediocre quality photos of each page with my phone, I decided to do something different and make some hi-resolution scans with my scanner. I didn’t scan every page, just areas of certain pages that I thought were notable (the pages are larger than standard size paper so I couldn’t scan full pages unfortunately).

If you want to repost my scans or use them for something else, I don't mind, but it would be nice if you gave me credit...I did spend a lot of time trying to get them to look as good as possible 😅 (which wasn’t easy with the flaps messing things up!)

First off is the gorgeous cover (I know I’m not the only one who thinks Anna’s jacket looks great!)

The first scene shows everyone hanging out at the Northuldra camp, including this nice image of Elsa and Bruni.

I’m not a Honeymaren fan but I thought this image of her riding a reindeer looked kinda cool.

The Ahtohallan scene is lovely!

An interesting but kind of weird scene of the characters exploring the ruins of the dam and finding Arendellian artifacts.

My favorite scene, Anna (in her new outfit) overlooking everyone enjoying themselves in the forest...

...then Elsa and Gale surprise her with some icy and windy magic!

New friendships being forged - Mattias and Yelena, Kristoff and Ryder, Olaf and Bruni (and yes, Olaf does go off the page a bit). Also Nokk seems a bit lonely over there. Maybe he’s trying to figure out how to be a nice horse after being angry at everyone for so long 😆

Back in Arendelle...looks like the statue unveiling scene at the end of the movie (except Anna doesn’t have her crown until you open the flap).

Overall, this is a nice book and it’s great to see new 2D Frozen 2 art after so many of the initial kiddy books recycling the same artwork over and over. But Explore the North is kind of a weird hybrid of being post-F2 and yet not. A couple of scenes, like everyone including Snow Queen ver. Elsa, hanging out in the forest together definitely seem post-movie, but then other scenes like Kristoff’s failed Northuldra-style proposal and Elsa in her Dark Sea outfit in Ahtohallan, are definitely not. Then there’s the scene where they’re exploring the ruins of the dam, which contradicts the movie because it shows the dam only half destroyed (plus Anna is in her travel outfit).

Buuuut it’s a little kids book so I should not be reading so much into it, lol. It’s not a story book, just a little activity book for the kids so no reason for the author to worry about staying perfectly consistent with the movie; they wanted to include familiar scenes from the movie plus a few new things for novelty. We’re already seeing some post-F2 books and comics cropping up (in other languages only...c’mon US!) so hopefully Explore the North is just the beginning of seeing what direction our beloved franchise will take from here on~

Hey guys! I’m here to bring you my lastest art post exclusive to my Tumblr blog before this month of August (aka the last month of Summer) coming to an end. Once again though that I’m back with this related “Wanda in Sparky’s Body” post; like I can’t help myself after checking the “Country Clubbed” episode since years ago. ☺️ However, thought I wanted to bring this as a remake from my original August. 31st, 2020 entry about what if her dog life continues. There is one missing from my original entry is that I forgot to put her wings during my art progress and after finishing it a year ago; even though I completely forgot to added to her wings by mistake. So sorry about from my errors and I wanted to fixed it by saving a remake I made from the beginning of August 13th; the same day where I brought my second related “Jellystone!” artwork through my DeviantArt page. However, it's a different remake instead of doing in digital edited again like I did from last time. Instead, I did in traditional way after using some pencils, sharpener, and color pencils for good old fashioned drawing. It does came out good at the end; especially I added to her wings this time as of fixing. Nice! 🙂👍🏼 I do have one more new addition to this remake is when she’s on sniffing stuff for clues or someone’s cooking up some delicious meals. I got inspiration from the episode screenshot I took from “Weirdos on a Train” in which showing Sparky sniffing stuff as well. Just hoping that I can change this with Wanda and looks cute as expected to be. ☺️

Though I got it done on a big piece of paper, I just needed time to take pictures without any shades that blocks me from doing good quality stuff; even I'm in my room or entire house. Thankfully that I have it while opening my window curtains to let the sun shine on my drawing brighter. I'm hoping I can get my own scanner to scan my artworks just as easily than taking pics on my traditional drawings because of shading problems. Since I only had my tablets though, I would have to check out some other scanners if it works on tablets as much for computers. Too bad I didn't my own computer or my laptop anytime soon. Anyways, hope you'll enjoy this last art post for August 2021 and for me when my September 2021 plans come to place.

I do use a scanner, it’s a piece of garbage but it gets the job done :’D I need a new one, it’s especially bad at scanning my papercrafts, and that’s! Kinda important! But it can be hard to find pro-quality scanners for layperson prices these days :T (And never buy one of those desktop print-and-scan models, the scanners are no good!)

Weekly Young Jump 2016, Issue no. 4~5, Opening colour page

The cover of :re volume 6. Furuta and an apple. Regarding its contents, this volume was a turning point that slightly changed the course of the story up to volume 5 of :re. Shirazu died in the line of duty, and Haise was dyed in black… I drew the story about a staff member (Goubaru-kun), which was unusual content for a volume omake. During my serialization, I went from Fukuoka to Tokyo every year for the Shueisha New Year’s party. On the first day of the party I’d talk to the other authors, and on the second day it became a tradition to hang out with the staff members. I was looking forward to it as one of the biggest events of the year since I didn’t have much opportunity to play while writing my series, but because of Goubaru-kun...I mean, thanks to him, it ended up becoming a field trip to the hospital for half a day. So as revenge...I mean as gratitude, I drew about it in the manga in the form of an omake. My series has come to an end, but because Goubaru-kun was next to me...I mean, thanks to him, it also became an event where I got to witness my true character. It was his fault that I really learned a lot about myself. Thank you.

The cover of :re volume 7. Kaneki, to match with volume 7 of OG. The theme of this cover was, “Can I beat the strength of the OG volume 7’s art?” I drew this side-by-side with OG volume 7 Kaneki. When I look at it now, it’s lacking a certain kind of impact even though my drawing skills had improved a lot back then. At the time, I was heavily relying on the anatomy portion of my drawing skills, which was why I may have gone astray in various ways regarding the art’s intentions. In OG volume 7, I wasn’t led astray due to ignorance, but rather because I felt so energetic (and therefore also fragile). For :re volume 7, I get the impression that I was thinking about that in my head. It somehow gives off an air of trying to distract people with anatomy. Nevertheless, regarding the quality of the cover art I feel like I drew it to the best of my abilities in those days. I think it’d be interesting to look back at my other drawings and think about my mental state and the theme of the drawing for each one.

Movie adaptation - major decision It’d be better to call it a “major decision” rather than just a “decision”. The movie had all kinds of stuff too.

Uh, what was this for again? I know it was a cover for a YJ issue. Maybe I drew this illustration after I finished :re volume 7’s cover art? That one [volume 7 cover] took up too much of my strength, and this one [current illustration] makes me feel like I’m out of breath.

I also like this design. Illustration-wise, this volume is of course, about Mucchan and Torso. I thought from the start that Torso would meet his end by becoming a torso (literally). I feel like my work doesn’t have many characters that smell of gender, but I can sense it from Mucchan, or rather I think it’s coiled around her. During my serialization, I always got the impression that she was very different from the other characters. I don’t really understand her well.

Volume 8 of :re. I like how this Arima looks. It feels like the art in this volume was also right at the height of my anatomy phase, and it feels like very crisp. But gradually you begin thinking about something different.  In the wrong direction.

My thoughts about the colour spread I splashed on bold colours for the spread, I wonder if it was because I didn’t have time or something, I remember I was saved by L.S.D.’s design. I was bombarded by the obsessive idea of, “Do I always have to draw so much?” Because Jump authors’ colour spreads always have lots of characters on them, their colouring is meticulous, and they look splendid. In contrast to that, my spread gives off the feeling that I didn’t have time or any motivation. It’s not that I’m not motivated, it might just be that I’m not good at drawing a lot of characters at once. Sometimes I end up wondering if the concept of “One character only!” might be more powerful.

100 stickers The illustration of the stickers from the appendix of YJ magazine. There are a hundred of them. I wondered about how much the price of a sticker would cost, so I went to Incube (a general store) in Tenjin, Fukuoka, and bought a pack of clover stickers (30-40 pieces) and one gorilla sticker (why). Both cost around 300 yen, about the same price as Young Jump, so I thought, “Wouldn’t it be a good deal if reading a manga also came with stickers!?” Such a good deal. It was nice seeing readers use them to stick on top of a letter every once in a while.

Transitioning from from full digital to half-digital From this point on, the idea of "How can I finish my manuscript quickly?" greatly occupied my mind. I think it was around this time that work for another series (the game) came in. If I remember correctly. I had been drawing fully digital this entire time, but for this volume I experimented by interweaving digital with analog. We live in an era crazy about speed. However, because I couldn't control the screen anymore, I had a rough time drawing this volume. I used a G pen to draw the characters. The line drawings were uploaded with the scanner, and I finished the final touches digitally. Since it doesn't take a lot of time to write the storyboard, during this period I could finish the manuscript in 2.5 days, and set aside 4 days for other work. Thinking about the manga now, it would've been better if I'd spent my extra time focusing on it, but back then I thought doing this would be the best. This volume is the only volume where the characters were entirely drawn in analog. Since then, it has changed to drawing in analog for quick things, and for things that need to be drawn with more skill, drawing it first in analog before going to digital.

Inktober 2019 Retrospective

This is mostly for my own benefit.  Fair warning, I slipped into “self assessment at work” mode, so the language is a bit odd.  A reminder, I have no formal art training, but do have formal engineering training.

So read on if you want my thoughts on my own work.  Or, y’know look away.

Summary

My goal was to “finish” Inktober, posting 31 fully inked drawings over the course of the month.  A secondary goal was to use and practice with the shiny new Copic markers my dearly beloved, @godsdamnednamethieves, gifted me back in September.

I achieved both these objectives, and while there were some rough patches, and many nights where I stayed up far later then I should have, I’d say it went fairly well.  It was helped that I took a week-long “staycation” in the middle of the month.

That said, there is clearly room for improvement in my art, time-management, and process.  It is my next objective, moving forward, to incorporate what I have learned, about my self-discipline, art, and tools, into a stable plan that promotes growth.

Onto specific issues.

Tools

For Inktober 2019, I used three sketchbooks, Pilot’s “color eno” mechanical colored pencils, gummy erasers (I’ve had them so long I don’t know the brand), my Copic Multiliners, and my Copic Sketch markers.

Sketchbooks:

Adhesive pinding, flip-on-short edge.  This was the book I started on, and has been my primary sketchbook this year. The pages were already tearing out infrequently, but once I got started in Inktober this accelerated and many pages tore out.  Would not recommend.

Slightly yellow paper, bound with thread in smaller numbers.  For Inktober I just used this to keep sketch ideas and play with layouts, and did not put any “final” illustrations in it.  It lays flat on the scanner, and no pages have torn out.  I’ve been very happy with this style of book, and plan to continue with this style for my future sketchbooks.

Hard-bound thick paper, thread-bound and glued to the hardback.  About a week into October I ordered a new sketchbook, and ordered this one.  Thick paper, holds the colored ink well, looks nice.  Does not easily lay flat for scanning or drawing, though this was mitigated by leaving more margins.

The colored pencils worked well enough, though I quickly discovered that colored pencils and Copic markers do not play well together.  This led to me refining my technique and relying less on detailed pencil sketches before I began inking.  Need to order more light blue lead, as that is the color I go through fastest by far.

Multiliners are still a hit-and-miss.  My 0.3 multi-liner from the B-2 pack had the nib fall out, and from what I can tell that style of marker/pen/whatever can not have the nib replaced.  My 0.3 Multiliner SP wound up being my work horse pen, though I also used my 0.1 Multiliner for fine detail, and my 0.8 and 1.0 for borders and some lettering.  Oddly, before my 0.3 multliner failed me for the last time, it was reliably giving narrower lines from the 0.3 multiliner SP.  I don’t know if this was just a lead-up to the nib-failure, or if there’s a bigger difference between the SP and the pens from teh B-2 pack.  But even beyond that, the SP feels nicer in my hand, and was more reliable.  When I need new pens, I’ll probably bite the bullet and get more of the SP variety.

Copic Sketch markers.  This was mostly a learning experience, figuring out what works, what doesn’t, how to use them, and so-on.  Overall I’m very happy, but I’m still very bad at choosing colors.  I repeatedly went to my husband to make color choices for me, often to great effect.  So if you like my color choices, give him the credit.  If you think my color choices are awful, give me the blame.  A few things that bothered me were that I noticed some of my drawing picking up little splotches or dots far away from where I was working.  This is particularly notable on the “Warrior of the Beach” picture.  My theory is that either I’m getting ink on my hand, then transferring it to the page when I rest it, or that when I’m putting caps on/pulling caps off, I’m sending little droplets of ink flying.

A few of my markers gave me a little trouble, but I’m not sure if it’s just because I don’t know what I’m doing or because I really did use W1 and C1 that much.  I need to get a small scale so I can see if they’re actually low on ink or if I’m just a noob.

Process

The days where I was most happy with my work was when I had an idea, toyed with layout in my sketchbook, and then redrew the whole thing.  When I was least happy was often when I floundered about with no ideas, and then tried to draw something, anything, around 9 pm.

What this means (to me) is that I’m still relying too much on “inspiration” rather then discipline, which is a long-term problem.

Beyond that,taking the time/luxury of a full sketch (in a different book) to plan layout, workshopping text with the hubby, and splitting up inking from coloring (by hours or days) improved the quality of my work.  Even still, some of the pieces I’m very happy with had little to no planning.

For example, “Ripe” was done with basically no planning.  After deciding to do a dude doing pull-ups, I started on the text on the bottom with a ruler.  About half-way through drawing the dude I decided to make it Dave.  At some point I hit the “clever” idea of making it an immovable rod instead of a mundane pull-up bar.  And then I cursed myself, because I came up with a better text layout, “Immovable Rod, Ripe Bod”, but it was too late to use it.

The Art Itself

The big part.

Some days I was very happy.  Some days I floundered (can you guess which category my “pattern” piece falls into?).  Overall though, I think I showed improvement, both in line-work and color-work, over the month.  That said, “Mindless” and “Bait” still make me very happy.

I also realized that I strangely enjoy text.  Whether it was using little banners, comic-style speech and narration boxes, borders and fancy fonts, it was a lot of fun and helped contextualize the pieces.  Incorporating text is definitely something I want to continue to do.

Playing around with layouts, borders, framing was also unexpectedly fun.  The later pieces where I restricted my “work area” with borders I think turned out much better for the limitation, with the framing devices often helping tell the story.  In comparison, pieces like “Overgrown” or the early “freeze” and “build”, don’t have a firm ending, and felt lacking to me.

Flaws: hands, feet, and legs in general.  And as much as I enjoyed playing with layouts and borders, I can’t use that as an excuse to not draw feet and more complicated leg positions.  I clearly need to spend more time doing simple figure sketches, both whole-body and specific body parts.

Conclusion

Inktober was great, if time permits, I’ll probably do it again next year.  But probably not the “full marathon”, dropping down to “half marathon” so I don’t stay up quite so late.

Also, I need to do a nicer illustration of Xanadeux.  She’s only got that one panel.  She needs more love.

You Take My Breath Away~Reddie Fic

Summary: When DJ job opens at the local roller rink Richie takes it not knowing he would meet the possible love of his life.

CHAPTER 5

“Well, Mr. K, I bid you a good evening.” Richie said taking Eddie’s hand, bowing down to give it a soft peck.

           Eddie’s heart leapt out of his chest as Richie took his hand and placed a soft kiss on it. A soft giggle escaped his lips as he said goodnight to Richie and backed his way into the dorm.

           Once Eddie was in the building he let himself fall back against the stony wall and began to laugh softly, the sound bubbling out of his chest, covering his flushed face with his hands. Eddie had never felt so happy and giddy in any moment like he did now. He had just asked Richie out on a proper date and Richie had said yes. Eddie smiled as he pushed himself off the wall and made his way back up to his room.

           The days leading up to Wednesday went by agonizingly slow for Eddie, and his excited anticipation only made it worse. He had two tests, a quiz, and a paper all due before Wednesday, and in order to get everything done, he had to spend most of his time studying, writing his paper, or sleeping. Being in college barely gave him anytime for himself, let alone for his friends.

           By Tuesday evening Eddie was exhausted and just wanted to sleep for the rest of the week, but the only thing keeping him from doing just that was his date with Richie the following day. Eddie was super excited to go out with Richie and get to know him more, but his nerves were beginning to kick in, and Stan could tell.

           “Eddie, everything will be alright, just be yourself.” Stan said reassuringly.

           Eddie had told Stan everything that had happened between he and Richie, from all the texts they exchanged to the way Richie made him feel. As much as Eddie knew Stan didn’t really care for Richie’s sense of humor, he knew that Stan actually kind of liked Richie, and at the very least liked how he made Eddie feel.

           Eddie sighed, “Yeah, you’re right, but I’m just so nervous.”

           “Its okay to be nervous Eddie, just take a deep breath, everything will go great. I can tell he really likes you.” Stan reassured rubbing his back gently.

           Eddie just nodded as he fell back on to his bed exhaling loudly just as his head hit his pillow. He knew Stan was right, he knew Richie liked him, but that didn’t stop the jittery feeling he felt in his bones. Once he landed on his pillow he felt his phone vibrate in his pocket, and he reached in to pull it out and saw it was a text from Richie.

           Richie: I hope you’re ready to have your socks blown off by my sk8ing skillz

           Eddie: We will see about that ;)

           Richie: You doubting me?

           Eddie: I would NEVER do such a thing!

           Richie: Whatever you say, spaghetti man

           Eddie: Well on that note, I’m going to head off to bed

           Richie: Okay grandma, its only 8

           Eddie: I’m tired okay?!

           Richie: Okay okay! Goodnight sleepy prince ;)

           Eddie looked down at the last message, his eyes tracing it over and over, smiling wider each time. He could feel a soft blush dust his cheeks as he locked his phone and plugged it into its charger.

Eddie let his eyes flutter shut as the world blackened, but his thoughts wandered and they went straight to Richie; the soft, disheveled curls that adorned his head, the freckles that dusted the bridge of his nose and the tops of his cheeks, and that stupid mouth. The mouth that would spout vulgarities, but also the mouth that tasted of bubblegum and made Eddie’s insides churn delightfully. Everything about Richie made Eddie feel like a high schooler falling foolishly in love.

Not after long, he felt himself begin to drift off; it was that kind of falling asleep where you don’t really remember it happening. He was warm and pleasantly surrounded by darkness, and it was so restful that, after the week Eddie had already had, he never really wanted to leave.

Eddie was jolted awake to Stan poking at him,

“Eddie. Eddie, you gotta get up, you’re going to miss class.”

Eddie felt panic course through his veins as he jumped out of bed and hastily got ready. He had never been late to class, not once in his academic career. He took off the sweater he fell asleep in and threw on a new one that was bigger and drowned his small frame. He ran his hands through his hair to hastily style it into something remotely acceptable enough to make him look presentable in as short a time as possible. He grabbed his backpack and all but ran to his first class.

           Eddie spent most of the day feeling like he was going to throw up from the distress. Waking up late set his nerves on edge from the moment he opened his eyes, and his date with Richie was still weighing heavily on his mind. He would bounce his leg in class to try to help calm the anxiety that was coursing through every inch of him. He felt like his skin was vibrating, and no matter what he tried to do, he couldn’t settle his coursing veins. By the time four o’clock rolled around Eddie was ready to be back in his room for a short reprieve before his date with Richie.

           Eddie walked back to his room as quickly as he could, a mix of his anxiety and his desire for as much time alone as possible driving his hastened pace. The cold fall-transitioning-into-winter air prickled his cheeks, making them turn a soft bright red. Eddie waved his student ID in front of the blocky scanner to gain access to the from door of his building, and after getting inside, quickly made his way up the stairs and down the halls to his room. He tried the handle on the door but it was still locked, indicating Stan wasn’t back yet, and he was sure he was probably with Bill since his classes ended over an hour ago.

           Eddie walked into the cold, dark room and put his backpack on his desk chair before he made his way over to his bed where he flopped down with all the grace of a flailing fish, exhaling sharply. The cool and the dark were a much needed relief on his sense, and he looked at the time on his watch and saw he had one hour before Richie was going to be picking him up.

           As he lay there he took deep breath and exhaled, “Okay. You got this.” Eddie pushed himself up off the bed and walked over to his dresser to begin getting ready. He wanted to look nice for Richie, but he knew they were going to be skating, so he decided to pick something that would be comfortable but very flattering on him. He rummaged through his drawers until he found his large loose-knit pink sweater. It was one of his favorites to wear, especially when he paired it with his light-wash jean overalls.

           Eddie slid the sweater over his head and let it settle on his shoulders, allowing one side to slip down, showing off a little of his shoulder and collar bone. He then pulled his overalls on, clipping on one side and letting the other strap dangle unclipped. He looked in the mirror on the wall near his desk and smiled, pleased with his outfit.

           Eddie looked down at his watch again and sighed a little, relieved, seeing he still had some time to spare. He decided to use his spare time to make sure his hair was up to par, and he grabbed his brush and hair pomade and made sure it was securely styled in his usual soft brown quiff. He grabbed the bottle of cologne that sat on top of his bookshelf and spritzed it on his neck and pulse points. Nothing more aggressive than normal.

           After setting his cologne down Eddie felt his phone vibrate in his pocket. He quickly retrieved it to see Richie hand sent him a text saying he was waiting outside, and to take his time if need be. Closing his eyes and taking a deep breath, in then out, he grabbed his bag with his skates and left the dorm.

           Eddie made his way out of the building and once outside was greeted by Richie, leaning against his car with one leg bent up and his foot resting against the side, blowing bubbles with his bubble gum. Eddie could feel his insides already begin to warm as he watched Richie look him up and down and give the most devilish smile.

           Eddie smiled shyly back as he approached Richie slowly, taking him in. He was wearing his black leather jacket with an AC/DC shirt underneath it, and of course those skinny jeans that had perfectly placed holes at the knees. Eddie never understood why someone as good looking as Richie even gave him a second glance.

           “Shit, Eds.” Richie said, cracking his gum and looking Eddie up and down.

           Eddie just looked up at Richie smiling a bit, grabbing his left arm and shifting his weight to his right foot. “You…you look really…good.” Eddie said stammering over his words trying his best not to blush.

           “Eds, I am sorry, and not to demean your other numerous and completely winning qualities, such as your bright intelligence, way with words, and endless list of jaw-dropping talents, but you look so fucking hot.” Richie said running his right hand through his hair.

           Eddie bowed his head and chuckled lightly before licking his lips, feeling his cheeks warm as well as his stomach, and then looked up to smile at him, “Thanks.”

           Richie slid away from the passenger side door that he was leaning on and opened it for Eddie. Eddie walked up to the door, smiling at Richie, and then ducked his head as he slid gracefully into the passenger seat. As he sat down he could feel his heart beat in his eardrums, so he took a deep breath and let it out slowly, willing his whole body to relax.

           Eddie heard the driver’s side door open and he turned to see Richie climb in, and Eddie realized he could smell him, he smelled different, not like he remembered him smelling before, not bad but very good. Richie usually had the distinct smell of cigarettes and bubblegum, which had its own allure, but today he smelled more musky with a hint of vanilla, and some other notes he couldn’t place. Eddie could feel his head begin to swim as the smell of Richie swarmed all around him.

           “You ready?” Richie said looking over at Eddie.

           “Yeah, where you taking us?” Eddie asked with a smile.

           “It’s a surprise.” Richie said, returning the smile and adding a wink.

           Richie accelerated the car as Eddie sat back and buckled himself in. He looked out the windows and watched the scenery pass by, a comfortable silence between them filled only by the softly playing radio. It felt nice, after having his nerves on edge all day. He watched as they passed neighborhoods, the small downtown that included a small movie theater that everyone loved, and barren trees getting ready to face the cold. It wasn’t that long of a drive though before Richie pulled up to the diner in town. That very same diner where Eddie felt his heart ignite and knew that he wanted to be with Richie.

           “This is where we are eating?” Eddie asked, a little surprised and delighted that this is where Richie wanted to eat.

           “Yeah, it’s the first place we really…uh, you know, met.” Richie said smiling almost shyly.

           Eddie smiled fully at the fact that Richie had chose this specific place to eat, and the reasoning behind it, and opened the passenger door and climbed out. He began to make his way over to the diner door when Richie caught up with him in time and grabbed the door.

           “M’lady.” Richie said bowing dramatically while holding the door open.

           Eddie walked into the diner and was greeted with the familiarly pleasant smell of grease and burgers. There was a sign by the hostess stand that said ‘Seat yourself!’ in some vintage font. Richie walked up and looked over at him, “Lead the way.”

           Eddie nodded slightly as he took Richie’s pinky in his, locking them together, and lead the way to the back of the diner. Eddie chose a booth that was by one of the windows and looked like it had been freshly cleaned. He slid into one side of the booth and Richie sat down on the opposite side.

           After settling a waitress in her mid-40’s approached the two. Eddie noticed she had curly brown hair with strands of grey just beginning to show, and striking physical features. Her cheekbones were sharp, nose coming to a perfect point, and piercing blue eyes.

           “Hey there, I’m Sallie, I’ll be your waitress today. Can I start you off with a drink?”

           “I’ll take a coke.” Richie said smiling up at Sallie.

           “I’ll have a strawberry milkshake please.” Eddie smiled.

           “Sure thing, I’ll be right back with those.”

           Sallie closed her ticket book and walked towards the kitchen to get the drinks they just ordered. Richie leered slightly in her direction as Sallie walked away, “Now that’s a MILF.”

           “Richie!” Eddie whispered harshly while smacking him in the head with his menu.

           “What? It’s true!” Richie said laughing.

           “Do you have to say it so loud?!”

           Richie only responded with a proud smirk on his face and leaning back in the booth at an angle, one arm on resting on the table and the other on the top of the seat. “How was your day, Ed’s?”

           “Well, I was late for my first class, I haven’t been able to focus like at all on anything, and to be honest I’ve been a nervous wreck all day.” Eddie felt the words slip out of his mouth easily, not meaning to be so openly worn down and honest about his nervousness towards tonight.

           Richie sat there in silence, staring deeply into Eddie’s nervous gaze, and Eddie began to fidget with end of his sleeve. He saw Richie begin to lean across the table a little, but Sallie chose that moment to return with their drinks.

           “Here you go boys, are you ready to order?” Sallie asked with a smile, pen at the ready to take their order.

           “I’ll take the chicken wrap with no tomato.” Eddie smiled up at her.

           “I’ll have a cheeseburger with fries.” Richie added.

           “All right, I’ll put that in, it should be out shortly.” Sallie responded closing her ticket book putting it in the pocket of her apron.

           Once Sallie walked away Richie spoke, “Eddie, I don’t want you to be nervous around me, I want you to feel comfortable.”

           “It’s hard not to be nervous around you, Rich.” Eddie said back with a wan smile, quickly realizing he had just called Richie “Rich”.

           “You can just be yourself, Eds. I already like you, so what’s there to be nervous about?” Richie said with a warm smile, reaching his arm out to give a soft pinch to Eddie’s cheek.

           Eddie let a soft laugh escape his lips, and he quickly covered his face with his hands, feeling every nerve relax in earnest for the first time today. Something about being with Richie made him so nervous but at the same time so relaxed. “Well, other than being a ball of nerves all day, it was alright, and it’s getting better by the minute. What about you, how was your day?” Eddie inquired, resting his head in his hands.

           “Well, I certainly am glad to hear that, Mr. K, I could only wonder what is making it get better.” Richie said, using some god-awful attempt at Southern Belle accent, and winked before continuing in his normal voice, “I pretty much just had class, and now I am having dinner with a really fucking cute boy. I’d say the day has been pretty good so far. One for the books, maybe even.”

Eddie couldn’t stop the smile that broke out across his face (despite Richie’s poor use of grammar), and quickly took a sip of his milkshake to try and hide it. “You sure you’re not just talking about yourself there?”

           “What do you mean? I am positive, Eds, that you are the cute one here. I, on the other hand, am the sexy one. That’s the difference.”

           Eddie nearly choked on his milkshake as he began to laugh at Richie’s utter charm and stupidity. He felt the burn of milkshake about to come out of his nose, and quickly reached for his napkin to cover it and his mouth, before a complete embarrassment happened. He could see Richie trying to cover his mouth with his hand as he laughed loudly, his eyes crinkling at the corners and a flush covered his high cheeks, and Eddie tried to calm his simultaneous coughing and laughing, a painful and all the more hysterical combination.

           “I mean, I knew I was funny, but Jesus H. Christ.” Richie chuckled.

           “I’m laughing at the fact that you think you’re the sexy one. Don’t get me wrong you are very sexy, but let’s be honest, I take the cake on that one.” Eddie said still laughing, feeling emboldened by the glow Richie was making him feel, and tried his best to wink at Richie, but failed epically.

           “Touché, Spaghetti, touché.” Richie said taking a sip from his coke, “But you being completely unable to wink just proves my point that you are the cute one.”

           Eddie knew he couldn’t wink for shit and felt a mildly embarrassed blush rise to his cheeks. Just as Eddie was going to shoot back at Richie, probably something about how yeah, maybe Eddie was cute, but he could still kick Richie’s ass, Sallie showed up again at their table with their burger and chicken wrap. “Here you go, boys, is there anything else I can get you?”

           “Uh, no thanks, I think we’re good.” Richie said sweetly to Sallie.

           “All right-y, well enjoy.” Sallie said, returning the smile before making her way back to the kitchen.

           Richie and Eddie began to eat their food in a comfortable silence for a short while before Richie made some joke about his burger tasting better than sex, and Eddie completely disagreeing saying sex was obviously better than a greasy burger. They both had laughed, and Richie, realizing his folly, agreed that sex was indeed better than a burger.

           As they chatted, Eddie learned that Richie was at school for journalism, hoping one day to land a job as a DJ on the radio. Eddie also learned that Richie loved music more than the average person, and he was a big fan of 80s rock and modern alternative music, completely different from Eddie’s taste in music, but entirely respectable.

           Eddie told Richie about his major and hoping one day to become a pharmacist, and maybe even having his own pharmacy. Richie listened intently with a smile as Eddie told him about his post-graduation plans. Richie asked about his favorite music, and Eddie blushed as he told him he liked Indie pop and music you hear on the radio, but Richie seemed to show some interest as well, and this made Eddie relax a little.

           They were sitting there talking when Sallie walked up again, “Are you guys ready to pay?”

           “I think we are, thank you.” Eddie said politely.

           “Alright-y, would you like the bill split?” she asked.

           “No, I’ll take it.” Richie responded quickly, taking the bill from Sallie.

           “I think not!” Eddie said, reaching his hands out, trying to grab the bill from Richie.

           “No, no, no, I got it Ed’s!” Richie raised his arm over his head, making it completely out of reach for the smaller man.

Eddie tried to grab the bill from Richie by standing up and reaching for it, but ultimately he gave up. He sat back down, admitting defeat. “Thanks, Richie.”

           “Anytime, babe.” Richie said with a smooth wink (unlike Eddie’s earlier attempt), stuffing a twenty into the little book before shutting it. “Shall we?”

           “I think we shall.” Eddie replied sliding out of the booth.

           The two walked towards the front of the diner and thanked Sallie on their way out. Once they got in Richie’s car, they made the short drive to the roller rink, and Richie quickly parked the car in the small lot. Just as soon as Richie had put the car in park, Eddie was already flying out of the car and making his way into the rink, full of excited energy to do his favourite activity, and do it with Richie. It was his chance to show off. Eddie could feel Richie’s gaze on him as he raced to the door.

           Once they entered the rink, Eddie took Richie over to get fitted for some skates. Eddie was kneeling on the ground, lacing Richie’s rented pair up while he sat on the rickety bench. Eddie could feel Richie’s gaze on him, and it made his skin tingle pleasantly. He finished lacing up Richie’s skates by tying a small bow at the top.

           “Okay, how do they feel?” Eddie asked pushing off his knees.

           “Good!” Richie nodded enthusiastically, giving the skates a wiggle with his feet.

           “Okay, let me get my skates on and then we can head to the track.” Eddie said sitting beside Richie as he began to take his own shoes off.

           Eddie quickly yet carefully laced up his skates, a practiced precision, and topped them off with a small lopsided bow on both skates, just like Richie’s. He stood up and stuck his hand out to Richie to so he could grab it. As Richie’s hand met Eddie’s, that same tingle ran through his fingertips and up his arm, consuming Eddie’s entire body with a warm, low burn. Eddie reveled in it.

           Eddie lead them both out to the track, carefully making sure Richie wouldn’t fall over on the way over and giggling when he realized Richie looked about as graceful as a baby giraffe. As they made it out on the track, the thudding music grew in intensity as they got closer to the speakers, but the track was barren, not a single person skating.

           “Alright, you ready?” Eddie turned and asked. smiling ear to ear.

           “I was born ready, Spaghetti Head!” Richie said placing his hands on his hips, but the shift in his balance causing him to wobble a little bit.

           “Oh okay, sure,” Eddie said laughing, “Just be careful!” He reached out towards Richie, placing his own hands on Richie’s hips to help balance him a bit.

           “First off, I need to show you how to get moving. There are two ways you can do it.” Eddie began to explain.

           “Well, get teachin’, because damn, I am not going to be able to concentrate or do anything functional if you keep holding my hips like that.” Richie said smoothly.

           “Fine, ANYWAY, as I was saying, there are two ways you can move forward: there is weaving your legs, which is the easiest way to learn first, in my opinion.” Eddie continued, “So what you’re going to do is just start to spread your legs apart slowly, and just as your feet go past your hips underneath you, begin to point your toes back in and bring your legs back together.” Eddie smiled up at Richie.

           “Okay, Eds, you’re the boss.” Richie smiled back and began to spread his legs slowly, hands up and out at his sides for a little added balance.

Eddie skated backwards a bit to give Richie some space, and he watched as Richie began to weave his legs slowly and made his way over to Eddie. As Richie approached he saw Richie’s legs spread further and further apart. “Oh, no…”

Eddie was pulling Richie along as they both began to sing along to the song. Richie getting a bit more into it and making more of a theatrical performance of the song compared to Eddie, but unable to do too much without throwing his balance off.

           Eddie helped Richie stay stable as they skated around the track and sang at the top of their lungs, smiling and giggling all the while. Vivo recently launched the new Vivo X50 Series of smartphones. There was the Vivo X50 Pro which is a high-end flagship and the Vivo X50 which offers value for money while not skipping the most essential features. The camera is the USP of the all-new Vivo X50 and the phone surely performs on par expectations. The Vivo X50 base variant with 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage is priced at ₹ 34,990, while the top variant with 8GB RAM & 256GB storage is priced at ₹ 37,990. I got the base variant with 8GB RAM & 128GB storage and I used it for like almost two weeks till now. Here’s my full review of Vivo X50.

The specs of the phone look impressive on paper, but do they really reflect on the performance of the phone in day to day life? Let’s find out.

Built & Design

Vivo X50 has a glass and metal body with glass on both the front and the back with an aluminum side rail. The phone is quite slim with a thickness of just 7.49mm. The corners maintain a subtle uniform curve. The Vivo X50 feels quite premium to hold and it’s not heavy.

On the front, the Vivo X50 has a 6.56 inch full HD AMOLED panel with 2.5D glass and a punch-hole camera. There’s an in-display fingerprint scanner. On the back, at the top left corner, there is the rectangular camera module that blends well with the overall footprint of the phone. The camera module houses four camera sensors along with an LED flash. On the right side rail there is the power button and volume rockers while on the left edge, there is the SIM card tray. The bottom of the phone houses the USB-C port for charging and data transfer, which is also used for connecting audio devices as there is no headphone jack. Along with the USB-C port, there is the speaker grille.

Display

As mentioned earlier, the Vivo X50 has a 6.56 inch full HD AMOLED panel with 2.5D glass. The display offers a resolution of 1080×2376. The screen-to-body ratio is impressive with 92.8% as there are very slim bezels around the display. The display offers DCI-P3 Color Gamut & HDR10 producing rich & accurate color and a wider dynamic range for video content. The display is bright and vibrant and the sunlight readability is good enough.

As it’s an AMOLED panel, you can be sure that the display will be consuming less power compared to an IPS LCD panel. The display has a refresh rate of 90Hz so that everything feels very smooth and I particularly enjoyed scrolling through Reddit and Twitter on this device. The touch response time is 180ms, so it helps in tasks like gaming. There is an in-display fingerprint scanner that is fast and accurate. Overall, I’m quite pleased with the display on the Vivo X50 with a high refresh rate.

Performance

On paper, the Vivo X50 specs don’t impress everyone, but everyone forgets that this phone is more focussed on photography. However, in real life, the performance is quite good for everyone. The phone is powered by Qualcomm’s mid-range Snapdragon 730G chipset coupled with 8GB of RAM. I used the phone mostly for tasks like browsing the web and social media, emails, streaming music, and video content, and some gaming. During regular tasks, there are no noticeable lags.

Multitasking works like a charm and there are no issues while switching between the already opened apps in the background. The RAM management is quite good with no aggressive behavior killing idle apps in the background. I also played games like PUBG Mobile, Call of Duty Mobile, 8 Ball Pool & Clash Royale. While you can easily get the best kind of performance in games like Clash Royale and 8 Ball Pool, in heavy games like PUBG Mobile or Call of Duty Mobile as well the gameplay experience was satisfactory. During heavy gaming sessions, the phone heats up just a little bit but the temperature range is within the comfort zone.

Camera

Vivo X50 is a camera-centric phone and I was already expecting a lot. Gladly the phone didn’t disappoint me at all. However, Vivo has made quite a different kind of lenses for its X50. There is a primary Sony IMX598 48-megapixel rear camera with an f/1.6 aperture. The primary sensor has got Optical Image Stabilization. Along with that, there are three more lenses- an 8-megapixel 120° ultra-wide lens with f/2.2 aperture, a 13-megapixel portrait lens with f/2.48 aperture and a 5-megapixel 1.5cm super macro with f/2.48 aperture. The Vivo X50 offers a 2x optical zoom and up to 20x digital zoom.

The main camera captures sharp impressive shots in broad daylight. The colors are punchy, saturation levels, and the dynamic range is good. Even in low lighting conditions, the main camera with f/1.6 aperture managed to click some good pictures. The 8-megapixel wide-angle camera captures decent shots. There is a dedicated depth sensor and with it, I experimented a bit and tried to take some shots while the lens is covered and even without that bokeh lens the phone managed to pull off some nicely composed portraits. The macro lens works fine, but it could be a lot better if Vivo could add at least an 8-megapixel lens.

In terms of video, the phone is capable of recording videos at up to 4K at 30 fps and the output is awesome I would say. The combination of OIS and EIS makes it possible for anyone to record videos while holding the phone and walking, without degrading the video quality.

The Vivo X50 offers quite a few camera modes including extreme night vision for super low light photos. This mode helps a lot while taking shots under very low light. There are also a few night filters to enhance photos. There is also a Pro Sports Mode, assisted by Motion Auto Focus which offers quick exposure and shutter speed for taking shots of moving objects for some amazing shots. It’s quite hard to explain everything in writing so here are some camera samples for you. Look and judge yourself.

In terms of selfies, the Vivo X50 comes with a single 32-megapixel punch-hole camera with f/2.48 aperture. The selfie shooter clicks some nice sharp shots with a good amount of detail and the camera also works well in dim environments, making it a good contender against many other phones which offer a good rear camera setup but suck in terms of selfies.

Software

Vivo X50 runs Android 10 out of the box with Vivo’s own FunTouch OS 10 skin on top. FunTouch OS 10 is a blend of the old and new, as it retains some of the old, most-loved features while bringing a new fresh look and improving the user experience. The FunTouch OS 10 is much improved and packed with features.

The new FunTouch OS 10 brings performance improvements, quick sharing features, new system dynamics, and minimalistic design. The Vivo X50 also brings DocVault which uses the Government of India’s Digilocker platform as an authorized partner. It’s very useful for easily managing documents on the go.

There is the system-wide dark mode which reduces strain on the eyes and as Vivo X50 comes with an AMOLED display, the dark mode would also help save power. There is also the new Desktop Mode where the phone would switch to a desktop mode when you connect your phone to an external monitor. Along with these, there are other features like easier file sharing, new privacy-focused settings, multitasking via floating windows, and much more. The UI has improved a lot when we look back and the overall experience with the FunTouch OS on Vivo X50 has been really good.

Battery

The Vivo X50 packs a 4200mAh battery which seems to be quite good. The phone saves quite a bit of power if you use dark mode. However, if you normally use the phone without the dark mode, then also, you can get a full day usage easily and may need to plug it in by the end of the phone. I mostly charge my phone overnight but when I forgot to plug it in once, then also, by the time I wake up and leave home, I could easily get the phone charged up to 78% thanks to the ultra-fast 33W charging.

Final Verdict

Vivo X50 is a phone that you can rely on for video creation. The camera on the phone is really good, the device feels premium and due to the design, the phone quite reminds of Huawei. A high refresh rate AMOLED panel, solid battery, and stable performance, along with superfast 33W charging make the Vivo X50 phone quite a complete package for most users.

PHOT303 - Mileage May Vary - 14/3/2020

This day was meant to be a trip to the Exeter Phoenix with Louise, looking at some art work and some moving image, yet a spectre loomed over the day, and the future. I decided to bring along the Mamiya 7ii on my travels, and load it up with a fresh pro pack of Kodak Portra 160 (before the price went up!). 

Just as I arrived at Exeter St Davids, I had a call from Louise explaining that she had to go home and self isolate. The Coronavirus (COVID-19) was beginning to become a concern to the nation. This had been bubbling for a while, and the news started to report cases of it in China in late 2019 and early 2020. It had made it’s way to the U.K, and confirmed cases were being reported. Currently (that being 27/3/2020) it has worsened and the whole country is in lockdown, which is in turn being enforced by the police services. Yet this whole situation deserves it own post explaining the changes due to this. Back to our normal broadcast.

Since the trip had been cancelled as soon as I arrived, I took t upon myself to meet up with my old friend, Thom, as he is an Exeter resident. He had never seen a 7ii in the wild, so he was in awe about the camera. I had a few hours to spare, and I thought that the singular roll of Portra would have lasted me all of that time. And yet, I shot it all within about 30 minutes of starting it. 

Another Vauxhall Combo, parked on somebody’s driveway on Eldertree Gardens, which is next to St. Davids Hill. The hill coming up from St Davids station is long and steep, but it saves waiting around the station for 40 minutes for a 120 second train ride into Exeter Central. The hill is tiring, but it only takes a few minutes to walk and it is good exercise. I almost walked past this Combo, but I have always enjoyed the design of these houses, and they are oddly nostalgic looking to me. If that Vauxhall Combo was swapped with something a bit older, I would think that it would be hard to decipher when this photograph was taken. I decided to stop down the lens to around F8 this time around, to get more in focus and to increase the sharpness of the 80mm F4. And I do have to say, it just gets sharper the more it is stopped down. Even when these are scanned with my Canoscan 9000F Mkii (previously written about and despised), they’re amazingly crisp. I have also found a size of negative that the scanner seems to work well with. 35mm scans always looked really bad, but it seems that the bigger the negative, the better quality the scan. Everything I have shot with the 7ii has been scanned using the Canon at 2400dpi. This might be a high dpi to be using, but it also collects a lot of the detail that I would like to retain.

I met Thom in town, grabbed a strong black coffee and we walked around the roads around the quay. And to the surprise to me, there was a lot of scenes that worked so well for MMV, hence why the roll didn’t last all too long. Here, is a Fiat Panda and the legendary Fiat Coupe. Just like the Alfa Romeo GTV, Fiat’s do have some questionable quality control and electrical choices, yet they’re fantastic cars. The Coupe was a model Fiat made during the 1990′s, which is a rare sight in this day and age. They are somewhat of a modern classic with what seems to be a cult following, with the most popular model being a turbo five cylinder, propelling the Coupe to 62 mp/h in 6.3 seconds. And just like the Rolls-Royce in the previous shoot, the cars seem to juxtapose the setting, yet fit in quite nicely. 

Just up the road from the Fiat’s was this rather odd Renault Megane sedan. These Megane’s are usually hatchbacks, so it is a rare sight to see them in their sedan layout. This is also the only shot to include cars older than the proposed 2009 Scrappage Scheme. The bright white Megane contrasts the overgrowth, as well as the grubby Fiat 500. i wanted the Megane to take centre stage in this photography as it’s an oddity which isn’t seen all too much, and with a quick database check, it’s possibly the cleanest 2003 Megane around, with only 83000 miles, and passing every MOT apart from a few with minor issues. It is nice to see this Renault, baring down on 20 years old standing the test of time.

The final two shots are of the same Ford KA parked outside Watergate, above the quay. The KA is also a design that has stood the test of time, with the KA’s design originating from the early 1990′s, and being introduced in 1996. It is hard to believe that this design is of a similar age to me, as it looks, even today, to be modern and contemporary. As I took the first photograph (top), Thom was towards the back looking towards the block of flats, with him saying: “oh dude this is the one”. With one shot left, I had a look and he was right! It is possibly my favourite image to date and perfectly sums up what I want to be doing with this project. It manages to document the ageing, banal and boring cars that litter our urban landscape, as well as the urban landscape itself. I also like the addition of Kodak Portra 160. Despite it being less versatile than it’s 400 counterpart, it is a lot cheaper and finer grained. I do like the film’s overall aesthetic and quality, and it seems to match well with the Mamiya’s lenses. 

The advent of Coronavirus has put a spanner in the works in terms of image creation for MMV. This was the last roll that was shot before social distancing, self isolation and quarantine was a regular occurrence and a requirement. This could mean the shooting the Mamiya 7ii could be placed on the back burner, and shooting digitally could be the only way that this project can progress. This does seem to change how I shoot, and I fear I won’t be able to create the work that I want to be able to create. I will however be shooting the 7ii at the same time as the 5D, and getting it developed when I am able to get back to Plymouth. I am of course able to send film off to be developed and scanned via postal order, but I cannot afford this with the amount that I am shooting, seeing as it is around £15-£20 per roll in total. So I shall develop the rolls at my local lab, and scan them at home when I am able to get back home.

Note: I went overboard with the Futaba headcanons, having two Navigators can drastically change a lot of things. there’s a lot of room for freedom and I genuinely enjoyed writing it down.

Futaba

She met S/O over the internet, with the help of S/O’s built in functionalities and the advanced technology, they were able to communicate on a reasonable level, and she discovered that they also live in Tokyo.

Although S/O always hid the fact that they were blind, and Futaba completely believed it. they were partners in some new MMO Rpg or an online multiplayer game, and they used to grind for EXP and Items together, even going as far as to cancel their plans for the ‘limited events’ that offered rare/legendary loot and a huge amount of money.

They slowly drifted off from playing online games to texting on the site, and eventually, they found themselves enjoying talking to each other more than playing a video game for loot; that doesn’t mean it wasn’t fun anymore, It’s just they grew a liking to each other.

Futaba spent months contemplating whether to confess or not, was she supposed to do this now? is everything going to be ruined? are they even okay with dating her, despite not being able to get out of her room that often? to her surprise, they confessed first.

What’s even more stressful than confessing, you ask? Meeting in person.

Although she was able to do it, she was astonished and bewildered upon discovering that her S/O was blind. Not because she had a problem with it, but because they were able to communicate and play normally. plus the fact that they’ve never told her; maybe because they were stressed out, or because they thought that their crush would ignore them just for that fact.

Seeing how strong they were, even though they were blind, caused Futaba to have a lot of determination in herself. whenever she looked at S/O and how smart, powerful and beautiful they are, she couldn’t help but feel her shell cracking a little as she gained an immense boost in confidence.

Futaba was more than happy to help them, she programmed specific apps and helped create even more functions by accessing their phone’s code. they were able to use the phone as any other normal human being, or even slightly better than any other human being.

Once they had their awakening, they were able to see Futaba for the first time. That long silky hair, the hair their hands enjoyed running through was finally visible to their eyes, or more specifically, to their Persona’s eyes.

Being a second navigator allowed the team to have a much more successful chance at winning, they were able to view the stats of two enemies. and what’s more than that, with the combined powers of Futaba and S/O, they were able to reveal an enemy’s weaknesses/strengths immediately.

They also, surprisingly, had damaging abilities. they were able to damage the enemies together by sending a mental shockwave, causing the shadow to have a disruption in their mind as they lose their true form temporarily. this can also cause the shadow to go crazy and eventually evaporate, never to find a body again.

Once their bond was strong enough, they shared the ultimate skill which was called “Mind is matter, matter is mind.”. the ultimate mind/matter technique. Scanners links shadows minds together and convertstheir matter to mental energy, then dissipates them to the surrounding environment

Haru:

Haru and S/O met each other during the gardening assignment that was handed out by their professor.

They weren’t supposed to interact with each other that much but, seeing as how S/O was blind, the professor made an exception and made Haru in charge. since she had the most expertise out of everyone.

Helping them pick the right tools and the using the correct soil, how to plant the seeds and what to do during certain days were interesting topics to S/O, who never tried gardening during their entire life. the more they inquired the more Haru fell for them, they were asking her questions even she never thought about, and she was surprised by how smart and observant they are.

Eventually, when the assignment was over, both Haru and S/O got full marks on it. however that wasn’t enough to keep Haru happy, she had thought this was the last time they could interact on a meaningful level.

That is until she built her own little garden on the rooftop, she was surprised by S/O visiting her one day and offering help, to which she blushed slightly. she didn’t completely understand what she was feeling and, since she was already engaged, she couldn’t help but wonder if this is what true love feels like.

She remained completely silent, S/O was aware of Haru’s situation with Okumura foods and they were saddened by the shocking news.

Once they discovered Sugimura, and how he is treating Haru, they couldn’t help but feel protective and slightly possessive. despite still being friends; it felt like they were much more than that.

After eventually standing up against Sugimura and canceling the marriage, she felt completely at peace, with an admirable person by her side.

She enjoys their extravagant use of words when describing the taste of her coffee, their other senses were much stronger than she expected.

Despite S/O being blind, she’ll still use words like “Look” and “See” as naturally as she does with anyone else, she doesn’t want them to feel awkward or even hurt because she’s avoiding the usage of these words, although it may seem like a minor thing, she realizes it could hurt them a lot.

After the awakening, Haru and S/O had shared a strong bond throughout their journey. causing their Personas to connect together much faster.

S/O discovers the slightly sadistic nature of Haru in the metaverse, however, they are fascinated by it more than anything else. and for some reason, this sadistic nature has become more visible ever since S/O joined the Phantom Thieves.

Akechi:

Working as a receptionist for the police department was quite a strange job, not everyone is to be trusted with the police’s files, and not everyone can handle this job, however, S/O earned the title.

Even though they already knew who Goro Akechi was, they didn’t bother him too much. S/O didn’t deny that they were a fan, however, they limited their interaction and had their focus on their job.

All of these signs fascinated Akechi, not only were they blind but they were more efficient than any of the other receptionist and they didn’t bug him as much, despite being the biggest fan of them all.

This pushed Akechi into getting to know them more, he just couldn’t help the feeling he felt deep down inside, was he intrigued? was he fascinated and entertained? was he charmed or perhaps captivated? or is it a mix of all? nobody knew the answer at the time. This lowered his overall quality of work, he couldn’t stop thinking about them.

After successfully getting to know them and taking them to a few dates, he realized how modest, nice and kind they are. they were perfect, he was their eyes and they were his everything.

He’ll have a specific way of talking with them, that still feels just as natural. he doesn’t underestimate them, but he feels worried about them and feels the need to protect and guide them wherever they go.

He realizes they are at a disadvantage, having such low vision causes them to miss out on a lot of the things that are happening at this very moment. which is why he’ll always talk about being “In the moment” and describing their surroundings in a very carefully worded manner.

He would be impressed by the fact that they were able to awaken, and all on their own, realizing how much he underestimated them.

Their independence and magnificent capabilities were more than useful to him and the others in battle, and he couldn’t keep focusing on the battle with how much style they had.

He couldn’t deny it, He was worried about them, and he’ll always worry about them. But that’s just him being slightly over-protective. however, Akechi’s good at maintaining his emotions and controlling himself. resulting in S/O being completely oblivious to his territorial behavior.
