[through gritted teeth] i am so normal about this
#no no no it's just like....#the difference between just these two instances from s1 to s3 is FASCINATING to me#he's not asking in the first he's just stating a fact and he's having his belief confirmed#(by a man who's now almost definitely going to be in jail for the rest of his life -#the less extreme of the worst case options jane's had in his head but still nothing to scoff at) he's told with passion and conviction that#the revenge was worth the cost; that he doesn't regret it in the slightest; that it was 'redemptive')#and that's exactly what jane thinks that's what he's built his life around for the past - at least 5? - years#but he IS asking in the second; it's years after the first and he's not the same man he was then#he does still believe in vengeful justice i think but it's not just him that he has in mind now#there's other people to consider - people that found their way into his head and his heart (despite any of his efforts to the contrary)#and he's asking this question to a man who's just been cleared of all charges (were they murder charges? idk i need to watch that ep again)#it's not just him he's thinking of now and it's not just the most concrete costs either#it's....idk it's a shift from the objective costs to the emotional costs; it's the shift from being told to asking i'm just obsessed#(also interesting that these are both men when the only time i can think of off the top of my head where he has this kind of interaction#with a woman is the s1 country club episode? the one with liz forbes? where she breaks down and says it doesn't change a thing#that's a completely new tilt to it too that's something to consider all of this actually has no point but where else am i gonna say it)#tm

minx is interesting. Itās interesting and itās interested in things in a way that I find a lot of current media about feminism not to be. Thereās an active interest into poking into some of the uncomfortable areas without simple conclusions when it comes to how feminism should relate to sex and the market/capitalism.
also really appreciate the unapologetic 70ās ness and the use of 70ās events, catchwords, buzz etc in a way that doesnāt always feel tee hee
#Like idk if it always comes to the Conclusions but is really interesting to see a show which is ABOUT feminism and what it actually is#With imperfect people#What does it /mean/ to make something feminist and what does it mean when that thing has to be sold#Thereās a couple moments so far that are like well this would blow someoneās mind off#Itās interesting to chew on relative to Daisy jones lol#Iām not going to say itās anti capitalist but itās also not that type of subliminal capitalist fantasy show#That just ignores the demands of capitalism to write off a world for the people whoāve already won#Very much almost in Convo with something like the bold type or classic sex and the city for that#Like the whole second episode thing with the ads#the ads unapologetically sucking and being soooo sexist#And upper class country club goer white feminist Joyce /also/ being extremely confined mentally to sexist advertising#Like I hate the edible panties. U know whatās great? Shampoo and makeup#And Doug mentioning that if they /donāt/ advertise the cost of the magazine will go above most peopleās ability to pay for it#Like. Itās a show Thinking about a lot of this#I think Joyce is so interesting because sheās both so much more radical and so much more flawed than a lot of the /girlboss/ characters out#There. Sheās the rare example of an upper class white feminist that I think the narrative is aware of the class part at least#And sheās flawed and kind of mean and totally out of it#And also like. 5000% more radical than a lot of the the equivalents#Like she isnāt trying to publish Feel Empowered with Sexy Lipstick articles#Sheās trying to publish articles about birth control marital rape and abortion access#And her issues often come from where the radicality of her vision is being compromised by praxis#Like thatās so interesting

when it comes to shiv iām like in between thinking what happened was a better outcome for her or the shittiest one for her. sorry this is random. but like shiv didnāt intend to free kendall n roman she just did the younger sibiling thing (at least how i interpreted) and realized she couldnāt stand the idea of kendall getting it. when she rlly fucking wanted it. like she wanted it to be her or no one. especially as the only girl in a family full of boys you are never not competing like i so get her. so i think sheād rather tom have it cause it would mean by association sheād have it too. something how the only times she allowed power is through the men in her proximity idk. and i do think this in some sense is better for her cause kendall wouldāve been a lose fucking cannon we constantly see him promise his sibilings stuff then rip it away from them. at least when tom is talking to hugo n asking for karolina we get a sense that theyāre somehow aligned. especially knowing that hugo is kendalls dog and even tho if she just asked kendall to get rid of hugo he wouldnāt done so in a heartbeat. but thatās the thing she didnāt wanna ask. it just fucjing sucks that it HAD to be tom like i hate his ass. it sucks that the dynamic in her relationship ultimately changed like someone said sheās always gonna have an angry man in her house now. idk if tom yet is this amalgamation of her father that the general public has saddled her with cause he still has to answer to lukas n lukas told her point blank he wanted to fuck shiv n my mans just said sure dude whatver u want no it doesnāt bother me at all!! like i still tom is a pussy but i also know that money corrupts n chnages u so that very well could chnage. which is smt i think succesion banks a lot on the idea of giving u the now and letting u guess what happens in the future. i know i just sent a whole essay so i definitely care about shiv but i am to my core a roman girlie so it is kinda nice not to have a dog in this fight idk!!
SORRY THIS IS LATE I JUST SAW THIS
i actually disagree! i think shiv DID want to free kendall and also roman from the cycle of abuse and she did exactly that. i think the phrase that really sticks to mind is the i love you but i cannot stomach you quote from shiv to kendall. i think the saddest thing about it all is the fact that shiv is in the exact position she spent the entire show trying to avoid: being the wife and giving birth to a baby that will probably continue the cycle of abuse (and i think what hints at this is when roman says that shiv is the TRUE bloodline not kendall because kendall's kids aren't his). i honestly think it's a mix of the fact that she didn't want to give the position up to anyone AND she saw what it had done to the three of them. like i'm not going to say she was being entirely selfless but also i do think she loves kendall and roman. and in the ending you could say she's in a position in closest proximity to power in contrast to kendall and roman but it's not an enviable position. she's a mother and wife and that's all she'll ever be. tom is the man she wanted him to be. the man she tried to shape into. i think in a way it's a self fulfilling prophecy in regards to her and tom. also she was never going to escape unfortunately.
and YEAH i don't like tom i might even hate him but i can't even fault him every single person in this show absolutely sucks balls. Except Gerri. I forgive her crimes. She's so hot. like i can't even blame him for doing everything he could do rise to power. he's no different from kendall shiv or roman. he just didn't have nepo baby power. but yeah i think he and greg are two spineless pussies but so is everyone else LMAO
#i think roman's place at the end is the most interesting#in the commentary part of the episode it's said that roman is in the same exact position he was in the beginning of s1ep1#and that the entire show and the entire dogfight over succeeding logan has just been one detour which i thought was vv interesting#but yeah it's clear that every sibling got what was coming to them in a way#in the end there being no successor no succession was the right choice and in the end there was only ever tom#im literally still thinking about this i saw an over the chemtrails over the country club edit to succession on tiktok and bawled my eyesou#ask

My absolute favourite sitcom to watch growing up is getting a next gen sequel and idk how to feel about it
#see I adored the original bc I live for unconventional big family dynamics#and yes I did only start watching it after the final episode aired bc I was too young to watch when it was coming out#it aired from 2007 to 2012/23#back then I wasnāt concerned with anything but mlp and winx club#and they cancelled it after the 20th season leaving it on a cliffhanger#of course even before that the show hadnāt gotten too great#the premise was that a woman leaves her husband alone with five daughters ranging in age from 17 to 5#and he has to raise them with help from no one but his mother in law on a family therapistās salary#but then around season 7 the actor wanted to move on to other projects so they did a switch. the mom came back and the dad decided to leave#so he could think everything over#then by season 13 he came back and season 14 became 20 episodes of infuriating miscommunication#but they shorted their shit out and the next four seasons were focused more on the married life of the second daughter#(which. is a whole other can of worms. that character literally taught me sarcasm and they ruined her#she was a rebellious goth who went against the system. they gave her a love interest and turned her into a housewife#and I actually loved the relationship she had. it was cute. I just wish they didnāt make her not only stop being a goth#but call herself stupid for ever being one)#season 18 ended on a logical conclusion. then they decided on 2 more seasons where the whole family moves into a big house in the country#and Iāve only watched those two once so I really only remember that it ended on a cliffhanger#and now. a decade later. theyāre making a sequel#that said second daughter followed her motherās footsteps and left her husband alone with a bunch of daughters#and Iām a bit conflicted. like her character was massacred already. if she knew the trauma of being left by her mom why would she do it?#most likely itāll be actually explained in the new show#and they got basically the entire og cast back together too which is gonna be really fun#see how they all aged and grew up#so Iām equal parts excited and worried. for the sake of 10yo me who binged most of those seasons several times I hope itās good#the first episode is starting in like 3 minutes so Iām gonna shut up now and go turn on the tv#rant over#ŠæŠ°ŠæŠøŠ½Ń Š“Š¾ŃŠŗŠø#ŠæŠ°ŠæŠøŠ½Ń Š“Š¾ŃŠŗŠø Š½Š¾Š²ŃŠµ

i hate that my community is so small. i hate that social anxiety prevents me from meeting the people i want and expanding my community and instead puts me in the hospital. i hate that i cant get any kind of medication without losing my visa. i hate going to the straight clubs because the only other lgbtq+ night life is just very small gay clubs where i feel like i and my group are taking space that we shouldn't. i hate that i am always somewhat uncomfortable around the people with whom i am the most comfortable. i hate that even the one person i can relate to about this stuff is able to mask better than me. it's like i am set up to fail socially
#mine#personal#rant#i went to the club last weekend and was uncomfortable the entire time#partially bc it was very VERY straight vibes which is not a bad thing but its not my element#and partially bc the club = high chance for social anxiety episode#we made plans to go to the gay club throughout the night but cancelled it bc the majority of our group is straight and feels uncomfortable#but im not gonna go to any club alone#so i just go where they go#the most fun i had was smoking in the smoking room for 2 mins talking to some rando in korean and barely understanding half of what he said#its such a fickle situation too bc i cant go with too many people and also not too few#but i dont even know where the limits are#2 people is too few but 3 can sometimes be too few too#and 4 is too many#like wtf!!!!!!!!!!#and then theres the issue of even if i were to go to the gay club instead i would be taking up space wrongfully bc--#--theyre so small and im just gonna stand around or sit on a stool or whatever barely doing anything n realistically that doesnt fit into--#--their business model so they might ask me to leave#and theres always the issue of gay men questioning every woman in the gay club and why we are there#as if there are any lesbian clubs or bars in 95% of this country#not a single lesbian or wlw establishment in the city much less any city outside of the capital#that might be an exaggeration but there are literally none in my LARGE city#there is a total of one singular trans bar in the whole city and its brand new but hasnt even opened yet#so where am i supposed to go#but thats still ignoring the other problem which is social anxiety#how many more hospital trips am i gonna have#asexual#aromantic#wlw#sapphic

actual writing advice
1. Use the passive voice.
What? What are you talking about, ādonāt use the passive voiceā? Are you feeling okay? Who told you that? Come on, letās you and me go to their house and beat them with golf clubs. Itās just grammar. English is full of grammar: you should go ahead and use all of it whenever you want, on account of English is the language youāre writing in.
2. Use adverbs.
Now hang on. What are you even saying to me? Donāt use adverbs? My guy, that is an entire part of speech. Thatās, likeāthatās gotta be at least 20% of the dictionary. I donāt know who told you not to use adverbs, but you should definitely throw them into the Columbia river.
3. Thereās no such thing as āfillerā.
Buddy, āfillerā is what we called the episodes of Dragon Ball Z where Goku wasnāt blasting Frieza because the anime was in production before Akira Toriyama had written the part where Goku blasts Frieza. Outside of this extremely specific context, āfillerā does not exist. Just because a scene wouldnāt make it into the Wikipedia synopsis of your storyās plot doesnāt mean it isnāt important to your story. This is why āplotā and āstoryā are different words!
4. okay, now that Iāve snared you in my trapāand I know you donāt want to hear thisābut orthography actually does kind of matter
First of all, a lot of what you think of as āgrammarā is actually orthography. Should I put a comma here? How do I spell this word in this context? These are questions of orthography (which is a fancy Greek word meaning ācorrect-writingā). In fact, most of the āgrammar questionsā youāll see posted online pertain to orthography; this number probably doubles in spaces for writers specifically.
If youāre a native speaker of English, your grammar is probably flawless and unremarkable for the purposes of writing prose. Instead, orthography refers to the set rules governing spelling, punctuation, and whitespace. There are a few things you should know about orthography:
English has no single orthography. You already know spelling and punctuation differ from country to country, but did you know it can even differ from publisher to publisher? Some newspapers will set parenthetical statements apart with em dashesālike this, with no spacesāwhile others will use slightly shorter dashes ā like this, with spaces ā to name just one example.
Orthography is boring, and nobody cares about it or knows what it is. For most readers, orthography is āinvisibleā. Readers pay attention to the words on a page, not the paper itself; in much the same way, readers pay attention to the meaning of a text and not the orthography, which exists only to convey that meaning.
That doesnāt mean itās not important. Actually, that means itās of the utmost importance. Because orthography can only be invisible if it meets the readerās expectations.
You need to learn how to format dialogue into paragraphs. You need to learn when to end a quote with a comma versus a period. You need to learn how to use apostrophes, colons and semicolons. You need to learn these things not so you can win meaningless brownie points from your English teacher for having āGood Grammarā, but so that your prose looks like other prose the reader has consumed.
If you printed a novel on purple paper, youād have the reader wondering: why purple? Then theyād be focusing on the paper and not the words on it. And you probably donāt want that! So it goes with orthography: whenever you deviate from standard practices, you force the reader to work out in their head whether that deviation was intentional or a mistake. Too much of that can destroy the flow of reading and prevent the reader from getting immersed.
You may chafe at this idea. You may think these ārulesā are confusing and arbitrary. Youāre correct to think that. Theyāre made the fuck up! What matters is that they were made the fuck up collaboratively, by thousands of writers over hundreds of years. Whether you like it or not, you are part of that collaboration: youāre not the first person to write prose, and you canāt expect yours to be the first prose your readers have ever read.
That doesnāt mean ānever break the rulesā, mind you. Once youāve gotten comfortable with English orthography, then you are free to break it as you please. Knowing whatās expected gives you the power to do unexpected things on purpose. And thatās the really cool shit.
5. Youāre allowed to say the boobs were big if the story is about how big the boobs were
Nobody is saying this. Only I am brave enough to say it.
Well, bye!

Well there you go, there's a tag limit, achievement unlocked i guess
Reblog and put in the tags whatās the worst moral youāve seen in a kidās show or movie(can be a recurring trope or specific to one work).Ā
#the saddle club#i had a big rant about this one episode on lj back in the day#there's a virus outbreak and the place is quarantined#but one of our plucky heroines sneaks away with her horse#the very horse that is believed to be carrying the virus#thus potentially spreading it everywhere and infecting more horses#but it's all right because she loves her horse that much that it kills all viruses#and it was actually the bitchy girl's new hair gel or something#there are no consequences for our heroine's stupid actions#this was like twenty years ago but we still had biosecurity in 2003#i would not be quite so annoyed if they were in a country with more lax rules on the subject#but it is an australian show set in australia#just ask pistol and boo about our biosecurity rules#we have them for a fucking reason#actually many reasons#there are like 10 times as many rabbits as people in this country#and maybe 100 times as many cane toads#and we do not have rabies or foot and mouth#but this is exactly how you get them#you stupid idiot#but then i did read all the episode synopses to make sure i had the details right in my head#and there are two quarantine breaches#and every second episode is 'the saddle club do something stupid and put themselves in danger'#seriously 4 out of the first 7 episodes have 'X puts Y and their horse in danger' right there in the description#but i missed the beginning maybe there was a disclaimer like on alone#'the following program features untrained idiots with plot immunity. do not attempt this yourself'#anyway i have been bitching about this stupid show for many decaminutes when i should be asleep#i do feel better though#a tag essay#one of those tag things

waking up to you
au!rafe cameron x reader
ā in which you wake up in a strange alternate reality that just so happens to be the outer banks universe, and to your disbelief, youāre suddenly in a relationship with the shows most unlikely character, rafe cameron.
warnings: Y/N & RAFE DATE š teasing, pretty safe chapter
authors note: btw readers only āweirdā around cynthia bc ngl id act like that if i came across her bc shes so annoying on the show omg. but EEE hi guys. if u still arent part of the tag list, feel free to lmk thru replies, anons, dms, or reblogs !!
previous
youāre not surprised to wake up in rafeās bed again. at this point, itās almost routine, though every time still feels surreal.
youāve gotten used to the soft sheets, the familiar scent of him on the pillows, and the way the morning light filters through the blinds just right, casting a warm glow over his peaceful, sleeping face.
he looks so different like thisācalm, almost vulnerable. itās a version of him that no one else really gets to see. and you? you donāt mind at all.
you take a quiet breath, just watching him for a moment longer. but then, his eyes flutter open, and you freeze, quickly closing your eyes to pretend like youāre still sleeping. maybe if you play it off well enough, he wonātā
a finger pokes at your side, and you canāt help the involuntary squirm and groan that escapes you. ārafe,ā you mutter, barely opening one eye to glare at him. but he just grins, clearly pleased with himself for catching you.
āthought you were asleep,ā he teases, voice rough from sleep, poking your side again until you half-heartedly swat at his hand.
āyouāre so annoying,ā you mumble, but the smile tugging at your lips betrays you. āget off of me.ā
the morning quickly slips into a blur, and before you know it, you're tagging along with rafe for a ride around the islandāexcept not just any ride. heās got his dirt bike out, the same one youād seen on the show.
you were kind of surprised when you first saw it in the garage. in the world you knew, rafe got this bike after the first episode started, but here? no rules seem to apply anymore.
youāre wrapped tightly around his torso, his helmet snug on your head as he drives the bike through town, on the beaches, through quiet streets and long stretches of open road. the wind whips past your face, and you canāt help but smile into it, arms locked around him like itās the most natural thing in the world.
eventually, he pulls up to some kook-itorium, the bike coming to a slow stop. rafe kicks the stand down and hops off first, turning to help you off like he always does. his hands are warm as they slide into yours, and for a second, he just holds them, staring down at you with a grin.
āso, what do you think?ā he asks, pulling you a little closer as you hop off the bike. heās been practically advertising himself on the way over here. āa date? hrm? just you nā me. anywhere you want.ā
you smile up at him. āyeah,ā you say softly. āiād like that.ā
he tugs you toward the entrance of the building, still holding onto your hand. ājust donāt pick somewhere like the seaview grill orā god, that lame museum your mom likes.ā
when you step inside the building, it takes you a moment to realize where rafe has brought you. the place has that unmistakable country club vibeāpolished, pristine, like every corner of it has been touched by money. but itās smaller, rounder in shape, and more modern than the main country club building next door. servers move swiftly between tables, balancing trays and drinks. rafe, of course, heads straight past all of this, not even glancing at the downstairs dining area.
you follow him upstairs, past the busy floor where people are eating, drinking, and talking in their quiet, refined way. upstairs, though, itās a whole different world.
the second floor is open and airy, with barely any walls to box anything in. itās just the floor, held up by tall pillars that support the roof above, letting the fresh air and views of the island spill right in. the only structure that really stands out is the bar in the middleāa sleek, modern setup that takes up a good portion of the space, all glossy wood and glass shelves stocked with high-end bottles.
the place is filled with kooks, most of them middle-aged. they donāt seem to notice you and rafe, or if they do, they donāt care. oh right, rafe should be about 22 now, legal to drink here. does that make the others 18 and 19?
anyway, rafe is clearly familiar here. a few nods are thrown his way as he leads you forward, and he nods back, murmuring casual greetings under his breath as you weave between tables. youāre amused, but thereās a small part of you thatās bothered.
you thought maybe rafe had brought you here for food downstairs, but itās pretty clear now that this is just one of his regular stops to get a drinkāprobably whiskey or even scotch, knowing him. but you keep your mouth shut, not wanting to spoil the mood.
he finally lets go of your hand when he reaches the bar, leaning against the counter with crossed arms as he asks for his drink. you linger beside him for a second, glancing around the open space. the view from up here is stunning, with a perfect sightline to the docks and the country clubās main establishment just next door.
you rub your arm awkwardly, feeling a little out of place among all the well-dressed older folks. after a beat, you step closer to rafe, gently touching his arm to get his attention. āiām gonna go use the restroom,ā you say quietly.
he nods, not taking his eyes off the bartender. but before you can turn to leave, he grabs your arm, tugging you back toward him for a quick kiss. itās his way of saying 'be safe,' you guess, a small gesture that makes you smile despite the surroundings. you give his arm a gentle squeeze in return, then slip away to head downstairs.
just as youāre descending the steps, though, a familiar voice drifts up toward you. and then you see himātopper, making his way up the stairs. your heart sinks in the half-second you have to process it.
great. the last time you talked to him was at the party, when he was stumbling over some half-assed apology. and now here he is, about to cross your path.
fantastic. just what you needed.
the moment his eyes land on you, thereās a flicker of recognition that lights up his face, just for a momentālike spotting an old acquaintance in a crowd.
āy/n!ā he says, his hands coming up as if heās presenting you to the world. he glances at his mom as if to say, ālook who it isā. you can feel your heart rate pick up as you pause on the steps, furrowing your brows at them.
they were definitely just talking about you right before this.
you force a smile, but itās small and tight, barely breaking through your unease. āhi, topper,ā you mumble, glancing between him and his mom. thereās a brief moment of silence as you weigh your optionsāwhether to continue this conversation or slip away.
ultimately, you choose the latter. you take a step forward, moving past them and continuing down the stairs, leaving them behind. as you go, you can feel topperās eyes on you.
he glances down at his shoes and shifts awkwardly, but then, just as quickly, he looks up again. ācome on, letās just go upstairs,ā he insists to his mom, trying to shake it off as they both start moving again.
itās not that you wanted to dismiss topper and his mom or anything. really, you just donāt see the point in lingering in the middle of a public staircase, one of the only two that connected the floors of the country club. you donāt want to be rude, but you also donāt want to talk to topperāespecially after your last encounter at the party.
topper and his mom step off the stairs, but the moment topper spots rafe, a grin spreads across his face.
āhey, good seeinā you back here again,ā topper greets, approaching the bar with a friendly demeanor.
rafe daps him up casually. āyou too, man,ā rafe replies, genuinely glad to see him.
topper's mom stands just a foot away, carrying her purse and looking utterly uninterested in the interaction, her gaze flicking off to the side as if sheās assessing the other patrons. sheās never been a fan of rafe, just barely tolerating him because he comes from a good family, and it shows in the way she avoids direct eye contact.
pulling away from the handshake, toppers eyes glance back toward the staircase as if expecting you to appear at any moment. āsaw you and y/n come in,ā he adds, ājust wanted to say hi.ā
rafe nods with a smile as he leans back against the bar, one elbow resting casually on the counter. he glances at topperās mom. āhey, cynthia,ā he says, flashing her a grin.
her expression shifts from indifference to surprise, and then it hardens, almost offended by the casual familiarity. sheās always been the type to keep her distance from him, and rafe knows it. to her, heās still just another troublemaker, another bad influence.
topper notices the slight tension and looks back to rafe, his brow furrowing slightly. āso, whatās up with y/n?ā he asks, his tone casual but laced with a hint of concern.
rafe squints, his head cocking to the side as he regards topper. āwhat do you mean, āwhatās upā?ā he replies, his voice subtly defensive and carrying a hint of warning. āis there something wrong with her?ā
topper realizes how that might sound and shakes his head quickly. āno, no, man. i just think sheās, like . . . avoiding me or something,ā he clarifies, waving a hand dismissively as if trying to brush off any potential drama.
rafe chuckles, raising his glass up to his lips. āare you surprised?ā he asks, raising an eyebrow at topper, the teasing tone evident. he shakes his head, a look of amusement on his face. āgirls, man.ā
cynthia catches the comment, her expression shifting to one of disapproval. she mutters a clipped āten minutesā to her son before leaving without a word, turning on her heel and heading toward the stairs to leaving topper there with him.
topper watches her go, feeling the weight of the awkwardness settle over him. he glances back at rafe, who is now watching the scene unfold with a smirk, clearly amused by the whole thing.
āso, what are you guys up to?ā topper asks, trying to steer the conversation back to safer waters.
when you step out of the bathroom, you spot her immediatelyācynthia, standing at the bottom of the stairs like sheās waiting for her son. you briefly consider turning around, maybe pretending not to notice, but itās too late. her sharp gaze finds yours, and thereās no escaping it now.
this is great.
you adjust your posture, trying to look casual as you make your way toward the stairs, your mind racing for an excuse to cut this conversation short. the last thing you want is to get caught up with cynthiaāif sheās anything like the way she was on the show, you are not open to a conversation.
but itās like youāre trapped. her eyes lock on you, and she takes a few steps forward in those polished black heels. āy/n,ā she says, and thereās a hint of something icy behind that tone, even though sheās putting on a smile.
you stop, eyebrows raising as you stand in place, trying to gauge the situation. her smile is forced, you can tell immediately, but so is yours as you mirror her expression. ācynthia, itās so . . . nice to see you again,ā you say, the words slipping out of your mouth because, well, kooks always know kooks, right? you assume this universeās y/n has seen her before.
but as soon as the words leave your mouth, cynthiaās expression shiftsāher lips purse, and her eyes narrow slightly, pulling her head back like youāve just said something ridiculous. yep. that was wrong. completely wrong.
ālast time i saw you, you were just a kid! every time you come over to my home now, itās like youāre always sneaking around,ā she remarks, her voice dripping with that fake kindness, the kind thatās so transparently bitter it almost stings.
your stomach twists. yeah, this is definitely not the conversation you wanted. āand how are your parents?ā cynthia continues, her tone casual but her eyes sharp.
you wave your hand, trying to shrug it off like itās no big deal. ātheyāre great! in costa rica right now, on vacation,ā you respond, trying to keep things light.
but cynthia hums, her expression a little too knowing. āi heard it was a business trip?ā she says, tilting her head slightly.
you clear your throat, feeling the tension grow. this woman is the worst. youāre slipping up so bad. āmix of both,ā you say, your voice strained as you force another fake smile.
thereās a brief, uncomfortable silence before the two of you lean forward, laughing in that awkward, forced way where neither of you are actually amused. the laugh dies quickly, and as soon as it does, you drop the pretense, turning on your heel as you head back upstairs, feeling weird about the interaction.
you feel like you were just quizzed. and you failed.
once youāre back upstairs, you immediately catch rafeās eye as you step into the room. heās leaning casually against one of the tables, a glint in his eye that matches the small smirk tugging at his lips the second he spots you.
his whole demeanor shifts, but topper, whoās mid-sentence, doesnāt seem to notice right awayāuntil he realizes rafe isnāt paying attention. topper twists around to follow his line of sight, spotting you before continuing whatever rant he was on.
rafe briefly glances back at him, half-listening, as you approach the two of them. when you get close enough, you quietly reach for rafeās glass, bringing it to your nose to smell whateverās left of his drink. without a word, you tilt your head back and down whatās left, swallowing with a grimace as you place the empty glass back on the table.
both boys stare at you, each reacting differently. topper furrows his brow, eyes flicking to the glass to see if thereās anything left. āwhatās up with you?ā he asks, confused, clearly sensing something off.
rafe, on the other hand, is looking at you with a blank expression, though thereās a hint of amusement tugging at the corner of his mouthābecause he knows. āshe was definitely just talking to your mom, top,ā rafe says with a knowing smile, his tone carrying just the right amount of humor to suggest that, naturally, a conversation with cynthia would drive someone to drink.
topperās face falls slightly, but he doesnāt even argue. he just glances between the two of you in silence because he knows rafeās probably right. with a quick check of his phone, he pushes away from the table, his energy deflating. āalright, iāve gotta go. see you guys.ā
ābye, top,ā you murmur, watching as he walks off, leaving just you and rafe standing together. once topperās out of sight, you tilt your head all the way up, meeting rafeās gaze with a lazy, playful smile.
āyou decide on where weāre going?ā rafe asks, sliding an arm around you, pulling you close as he starts guiding you toward the stairs.
you hum for a long moment, trying to think, before making something up on the spot. āletās go jet skiing,ā you say, half-joking but testing the waters to see what heād say.
rafe raises his eyebrows, a slight chuckle escaping him. āyou wanna go to montyās?ā he repeats, and you assume it could be some jet ski rental place you must go to. heās amused but surprisingly open to it. āwe can go to montyās, darlinā.ā
rafe drives the two of you out to some place a mile or two away, the sign out front reading āmontgomeryās jet ski rentalsā in bold blue letters. itās tucked away along a small marina.
you step out of the car. itās here that you notice the way rafe movesāa kind of quiet confidence thatās hard to ignore. he strides toward the dock with his head held high, like heās done this a hundred times. you canāt tell if itās because you two have apparently been here so often that he just knows his way around or if heās just naturally this confident.
while rafe chats easily with the staff, laughing and slapping one guy on the back like theyāre old friends, you find yourself preparing for the ride. you slip into a life vest, adjusting the straps so it fits snugly.
then youāre stepping onto the dock, the jet ski bobbing gently in the water. rafe climbs on first, settling into the front seat, and turns back to offer you his hand. you take it, letting him guide you into place behind him, and then you wrap your arms around his waist. it feels natural, like youāre meant to be there, holding onto him like this.
and, god, the thought hits youāthis is probably a dream for hundreds, maybe thousands of people. to be on a jet ski with drew starkey, any version of him, arms wrapped around his waist, close enough to feel the warmth of his back.
itās a little surreal, and you canāt help but feel grateful for this weird fucking alternate universe youāre in. being a kook, being rafe cameronās girlfriend, living out days like thisāyou could get used to it. you could live like this forever.
rafe glances forward, that cocky smirk barely visible at the corner of his lips. without looking back at you, he mutters, āhold on.ā and before you have a chance to reply, he twists the throttle, and the jet ski leaps forward, tearing across the water. your arms instinctively tighten around his waist as the engine roars, and you feel the force of the speed pushing you back slightly.
your eyes widen as youāre propelled across the open water. the jet ski skims over waves. you can barely keep from laughing as the wind whips through your hair. itās fastāso much faster than you expectedāand your heart is beating more than ever.
rafe steers you two in wide, looping turns and tight figure-eights, shouting the loudest, most carefree āwoo!ā that you think youāve ever heard. his voice carries over the hum of the engine and the slap of the waves, his laughter echoing as you cling on, a laughing mess yourself.
as the jet ski finally begins to slow, you let your chin rest on his back, just near his shoulder so you can look out ahead. youāre both breathing heavily from the ride, and heās still grinning, clearly thrilled by his own reckless route. he isnāt heading anywhere specific, just weaving around, but thatās what makes it even better. thereās no destinationājust you, him, and the freedom of open water.
āwanna take over?ā rafe calls out, and you laugh, thinking heās kidding. but when he glances back over his shoulder, you catch his expression and feel your own smile falter, realizing heās dead serious.
next thing you know, youāre seated in front, fingers gripping the throttle while rafe sits behind you, holding on with that unshakeable grin of his. the jet ski jolts forward as you try to get the hang of the controls, and you immediately feel the panic rise, the machine moving faster than you expected.
ārafe, i donāt know what iām doing!ā you shout over your shoulder, but rafeās only response is laughter.
ājust go easy on the throttle,ā he says, half-shouting and half-laughing as you attempt to steer. but the jet ski wobbles, veering off a bit too quickly, and your grip slips.
ārafe!ā you yell, barely keeping control as heās practically doubled over behind you, finding the whole thing hysterical. he tries to guide you through it, but itās impossible to listen when youāre both shouting and laughing, the jet ski zigzagging across the water.
but it slows. he wants to teach you properly.
you feel rafe's hands slip over yours, his fingers resting gently against yours as he takes control of the throttle from behind. his touch is firm but relaxed, guiding your grip as he leans in close, his breath warm against your ear. āsteady now,ā he murmurs. āease it forward like this, yeah?ā
you nod. his voice is a steady hum as he talks you through it. ājust a little pressure here,ā he says, pressing lightly against the throttle. āsee? easy.ā his fingers guide yours over the controls until you can feel how each movement changes the jet skiās pace.
after a minute or two, he lets you take over, his hands staying in place to catch you if needed, but heās not pushing or pulling anymore. you start to feel it, understanding the rhythm of the throttle and how to steer, and rafe just chuckles.
āthatās my girl,ā he says, patting his hand on the spot between your thigh and hip, sending a flutter through you as his hand settles back around you.
a grin stretches across your face, and before you know it, youāre letting out a loud scream that echoes across the water as you pick up speed, trusting yourself more with every second. youāre moving faster, the wind whipping past, and for a moment you feel invincible.
when you decide to slow down, you ease off the throttle, leaning back just enough to press into rafeās chest. you feel his laugh rumble against you. it makes you smile as you let out a breathy laugh of your own. then, youāre off again, speeding forward with rafeās steadying hands nearby, the two of you gliding over the waves like you were born to do this together.
youāre both sitting across from each other at a little table outside a bayside cafĆ©. you pick up your sandwich and take a big, satisfying bite, eyes rolling back with a muffled oh my god because it's just that good.
you didnāt realize how hungry you were until now. you lean your head back, savoring the taste, a content sigh escaping as you sit up again, still chewing, and glance at rafe across the table.
heās got his phone out, scrolling with his eyebrows furrowed, the lines on his forehead deepening behind his sunglasses. heās squinting slightly, or maybe heās just annoyed by whateverās on the screen. you pause mid-bite, lowering your sandwich slightly before asking, āyou okay?ā
rafe clears his throat, not looking at you just yet, and clicks his phone off. he flips it over on the table, his hand rubbing down the front of his shorts like heās brushing something off. āyeah, all good,ā he says, reaching for his own food, voice casual, but thereās a tension you can sense from his reaction.
it doesnāt add up, but you decide not to push it. youāve learned when to give him space, and right now, youāre way more into this sandwich than trying to open up that conversation.
you take another bite, glancing around at the scene in front of you as you chew. itās a perfect day, bay glistening in the sunlight, people passing. by with relaxed smiles, stopping in at shops or heading toward the water. montgomeryās rentals is right across the street, jet skis and kayaks lining the dock.
rafe leans back in his chair, ādadās finally starting to trust me to, like, step into his position at the company.ā he pauses for a beat, the corner of his mouth twitching up. āheās flying out of state next week, and heās leavinā me in charge while heās gone.ā
you just stare at him, a faint smile tugging at your lips without even realizing it. you can feel the pride in your expression as you tell him, ārafe, thatās really good. iām proud of you.ā
he grins wider, clearly trying to play it cool, and then takes a massive, messy bite of his sandwich. he chews with the gusto of someone who thinks a bite is a whole experience, sauce smearing slightly at the corner of his mouth.
you reach over instinctively, dabbing at the corner of his mouth with a napkin and tossing it back down on the table before going back to your sandwich like itās second nature.
he swallows and continues, āhe hasnāt really told me much, but i figure heās got some new properties lined up, maybe working out deals or, like, finalizing stuff with investors. you know how he is.ā
āyeah, that sounds like ward,ā you say, taking another bite, your eyes never leaving him.
āso heās gonna give me this schedule,ā he adds, āa ārun-downā or whatever, of what iāll need to cover. probably sit at the office, sign some stuff, and meet with clients or partners who canāt be pushed off until heās back.ā
āsounds pretty official,ā you say, trying to imagine rafe at a desk, talking clients through real estate deals like he was born for it. ādo you know what kind of properties heās working on?ā
he shrugs, a small smirk still lingering as he speaks. āknowing him? probably something bigānew development or another investment property he wants to secure. heās been hinting at something āgame-changingā, like some waterfront project.ā
you hum thoughtfully. āso youāll be doing the groundwork? like, maybe even closing a deal?ā
āyeah, maybe,ā he says, sounding a little impressed with himself. āiāll actually get to see if i can handle it.ā
it's nice to see rafe so eager to step up, to take on something this big, probably just to prove himself to his dad. he always acts so casual about the family business, but thereās a spark in his eyes today, and you think . . . he can maybe handle being ward cameron for a week.
you just hope you can stay here long enough to see him prove it.
heās finishing his sandwich, wiping his mouth with a crumpled napkin, and suddenly heās looking right at you. āoh, yeahādid you ever tell me how that call went with your mom?ā
it takes you a second. right, that call with your mom. you remember mentioning it to sarah, but rafe? he still doesnāt even know you hung out with sarah and the others while he was off fishing with ward.
āoh, yeah,ā you say, smiling as if the thought just occurred to you. āit was fine. nice to hear from her, i guess. i miss them.ā you shrug, playing it casual. but the truth is, you kind of do.
rafe nods, shifting his empty plate and leaning back in his chair, still watching you as he says, āthatās good. i mean, you get so wrapped up in life on the island, itās easy to go a while without catching up.ā
he talks on, making small comments about family and how he totally gets it, but as you sit there, nodding occasionally, your mind is somewhere else entirely.
you almost forgot about that call with your āin-this-universe mom.ā it seems so strangeāno, itās stranger that you forgot about it at all. and dad . . . right, your i.t.u. dad was there, too, wasnāt he?
wait . . what?
you feel a slight prickle of discomfort, shifting in your seat as you try to catch every third word rafeās saying, but really, your mind is circling back to that call.
dad. mom. two words, so familiar. but why are they slipping through your fingers, blurring just a bit?
you force yourself to remember something about them, to pull up a memory, clear as day.
oh! like that one time you and mom spent the whole afternoon baking, sugar and flour coating every surface in the kitchen . . . and dad was there, wasnāt he? but what did he do? your chest tightens, just slightly, and you fidget with your napkin.
okay, try again.
dad. right. he was . . . wait, no, he was definitely thereāno, he was doing something.
and then, just like that, the memory clicks into place. right, heād taken one look at the mess you and mom made, then grabbed the dog and headed out, calling back that heād be home āonce the tornadoās over,ā and you and mom laughed.
you exhale, relief washing over you, but thereās still a flicker of something unsettling. why couldnāt you remember that right away?
you try another memory, to reassure yourself. dad did this, mom did that. youāre sifting through so many small, precious fragments, but thereās something strange about each one, something hollow.
the parents you rememberāyour parentsāwere so vivid before. but as you replay these memories in your head, they feel softer, blurred at the edges. somehow, they seem more like your parents hereāthe way theyāre talking, laughing, looking at you with the same expressions as your i.t.u. parents.
your stomach twists, realization beginning to dawn, but you canļæ½ļæ½ļæ½t even hold onto what that realization is. the longer you stay in this world, the harder it seems to be to grasp what was real and what was . . . this.
are you forgetting your memories?
authors note: okay poor execution LMAO but i know if i was y/n, i wouldve wanted to stay in this universe but we cant have that, so essentially the conflict / the thing that makes her work harder to solve all the relationships in this life for obx!y/n is that shes losing her memories from her real life the longer shes there.
does that make sense?? š like she cant have her cake n eat it too, she can only have one lifetimes memories, her real ones or the ones that belong to the y/n who lives in this universe. makes her work faster to get back to her world so she doesnt feel like she can stay !!

Romance Anime Starter List
I donāt know about you guys, but Iām sick and tired of seeing āTop ___ Best Anime of All Timeā lists that are nothing but shounen. So, with "My Happy Marriage" getting a little attention from the anime community, I wanted to put together a list of some romance anime that I consider good āstartersā for the genre. Because if I were just now becoming an anime fan, Iād think all there was to offer was shounen action series.
And by āstartersā I mean basic stuff thatās not tooā¦out there, and actually involves the characters getting together instead of just harems or using romance as a side plot (sorry Ouran High School Host Club and My Next Life as a Villainess).Ā
So if youāre new to anime and want stuff thatās not just guys beating the shit out of each other (which is also fun, donāt get me wrong), here are some basics.
Taisho Maiden Fairy Tale- When the pessimistic Tamahiko Shima loses all function in his right arm, his family sends him away to live in the mountains with the cheerful, hard working Yuzuki Tachibanaā¦who was purchased by the Shima family to pay off her familyās debts and basically act as a caretaker/future bride for Tamahiko so theyād never have to deal with him again. Itās a more cheerful version of My Happy Marriage (without the supernatural stuff), except in this one, the guy is the one who has massive self-esteem issues and an abusive family. There are still very serious themes, but ultimately itās not meant to make you cry every episode. I swear itās so good, but nobody watched it!
Horimiya- A slice of life in which pretty and popular high school queen bee Hori, finds out her quiet, unassuming classmate Miyamura is hiding piercings and tattoos that could get him expelled. The two gradually find out more about each other and get together in the most realistic way Iāve seen depicted in an anime. Itās also fucking hysterical and genuinely emotional.
Recovery of an MMO Junkie- Another slice of life that focuses on two adults who meet in an MMO game without realizing they also know each other in real life. I donāt want to say much more than that. Itās adorable, and the main character is so relatable it hurts.
Love with Yamada-kun at Level 999- Speaking of MMOs, this is a newer series about Akane Kinoshita, a college first year whoās reeling from a bad break up. In an attempt to get back at her ex, she winds up meeting Akito Yamada, a popular gamer who happens to be in her guild in the MMO they both play at an IRL meetup. The two go from acquaintances to something more as they keep running into each other. Even more relatable main characters and just wholesome relationships all around.
Snow White With The Red Hair- A fantasy in which an apothecary named Shirayuki (meaning, you guessed it, āsnow whiteā) runs away from her home in order to escape becoming the concubine of her townās prince. While fleeing, she is rescued by Zen, the prince of a neighboring country, and she ends up becoming an herbalist to repay him. It's super cute with some genuinely swoon worthy moments and a couple that just works so well together. I have a habit of comparing this to Akatsuki no Yona, even though the two arenāt really that alike. This is more romance driven while Akatsuki no Yona is more of a serious historical fantasy with romance elements (Yona manga is amazing, but the anime barely scratches the surface, so thatās why I didnāt include it).
Sasaki to Miyano- When the shy, easily flustered Miyano meets Sasaki, a cool ādelinquentā upperclassmen, the two end up bonding over mangaā¦specifically BL manga. Thatās right, Miyano is a fudanshi, but due to his small stature and somewhat feminine appearance, heās constantly trying to convince others that heās not interested in having his own love story where heād be reduced to a stereotypical doe-eyed uke. But as Sasaki and Miyano spend more time together, they realize that what they have is more than friendship, and they have to come to terms with their own perception of gay relationships. This is my favorite romance of all time. Itās a slow burn, but boy is it worth it. Their relationship is so natural and realistic, just like Horimiya. Just two people hanging out and bonding over things the way people do in real life!
Given: The story of some boys in a band with trauma. Enough said. It's great. Go watch it.
Bloom Into You- Yuu Koito is a high school girl whoās been waiting her whole life for her own perfect romance to startā¦but when she receives a confession, she realizes she doesnāt know how to respond when sheās just not into the guy. And then she gets another confessionā¦this time from the cool student council president Touko Nanami, who basically jumpstarts her lesbian awakening. Very cute story about how we perceive the concept of love vs actually feeling it. Also has a canonically aro/ace side character, so thatās a win for me. Another show like this is Adachi to Shimamura (but I honestly donāt remember much about it. It just didnāt stick with me as much).
Ore Monogatari- Takeo Gouda is a tall, bulky high school first year with a sensitive heart of gold. He wants nothing more than to find his own true love, but most girls are intimidated by his enormous stature, and they end up falling for his conventionally attractive friend instead. That is, until he meets the tiny, adorable Rinko Yamato. He falls in love instantly, but heās sure sheās interested in his best friend like everyone else, so he vows to help get them together, even though his heart is breaking. Peak himbo behavior. Pure of heart, dumb of ass.
Yuri on Ice- Yes itās the gay figure skating anime everyone knows. And yes itās a fucking romance, okay? I will die on this hill. The romance between Viktor and Yuri is just as important as the plot!
Kaguya-sama Love Is War- Two insanely smart high school students both have a crush on the other, but since theyāreā¦you knowā¦high schoolers, neither of them wants to admit it first. So they come up with increasingly convoluted plans to get the other to confess first. This will go down as one of the best of all time. Itās a hilarious yet poignant modern classic.
Fruits Basket- Iāve talked about it before and Iāll talk about it again. A romance ācomedyā that slowly morphs into a drama about a girl named Tohru who finds herself living with the mysterious Sohma family after her mother dies. Little does she know, the Sohmas are the victims of aĀ (somewhat silly, but ultimately tragic) curse that she must fight to break. Even though Iām more into it for the family drama, the romance is still top tier and plays an important role in the story. This is my second favorite anime of all time, and itās a classic for a reason. If anyone hasnāt watched it yet, GO WATCH IT! IT WILL RIP YOU TO SHREDS!
And now for some honorable mentions that didn't quite fit into the regular list:
Ride Your Wave- A movie about a surfer who falls in love with a firefighterā¦ā¦and Iām not going to say any more than that. Go into it blind. If you like stuff like Your Name, this is a good one to watch.
Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun- A comedy about a high school girl who finds out the upperclassman she has a crush on is actually a shoujo manga artist, and no matter how she tries to confess to him, he just never gets it.
The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague- A slow burn slice of life that focuses on a guy with ice powers who has a crush on his coworker. Thatās it. Thatās the show. When I say slow, I mean SLOW. Itās perfectly cute and fluffy, but my god does it take forever to get anywhere with these two.
Skip to Loafer- A high strung, small town girl decides to go to high school in Tokyo, where she meets a variety of classmates, including the laid back Sousuke Shima. The unlikely pair become friends, and soon enough, she starts to feel something more than friendship. The only reason I didnāt include it in the main list is because they donāt get together by the end of the first season, but itās still really cute (also canonically trans character for the win!?)
So thatās my starter list. And no, I didnāt include Toradora, even though itās a classic. I know itās blasphemous, but I like it more as a comedy than a romance. It kinda lost me with the ending. But anyway, maybe someone will find something they like. Or maybe you'll just want to roast me and my picks š
#yuri on ice#kaguya sama: love is war#fruits basket#ore monogatari#bloom into you#sasaki to miyano#snow white with the red hair#yamada kun to lv999 no koi wo suru#horimiya#recovery of an mmo junkie#taisho maiden fairy tale#skip to loafer#unfortunately not much bl or gl since a lot that I've seen is too...out there for this list...#now bl manga on the other hand...#why did i make this lol?#because i finally got to the confession scene in akatsuki no yona of course and now i'm dead#I kinda want to include doukyuusei too but it's just a little bit steamier than what I was going for with this š

Hello! I've just found your podcast and listened into some older episodes. They helped me on my journey of understanding my sexuality, and formulate why some stories appear more sincere than others. Thank you two! In one episode that Aboriginal people are "like black people in Australia" (I hope I quote this correctly). If It's no hassle, I would be curious in understanding the social circumstnaces you are descrbing. Happily waiting for a new episode, and thank you very much for the fun and informative work!
hello there, thank you so much for listening to gayv club! I'm chuffed that you love the podcast (psst follow @gayvclubpodcast) š„°
So, to answer your question, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are the Indigenous people to what the world calls "Australia". And we are Black people. We are Black people and were racialised as Black Indigenous people when British and European people colonised the land over 200 years ago. Aboriginal people were called Black throughout Australias white colonial history and so we also call ourselves Black.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in this country have been subjected to anti-Black violence and genocidal policies that include but aren't limited to slavery, deaths in custody, segregation, and apartheid. Not to mention forced child removal and assimilation policies intended to "breed the Black out" of our culture.
But we're still here! Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are the oldest continuously practising culture in the world. Recent archaeological discoveries show Aboriginal people were baking bread even before the ancient Egyptians and Greeks. As a community, we've had our own Black power movements, music movements, and art movements too.
I'm generalising a lot because Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are very diverse. We've got over 400 languages and nations, each with its own cultural rules. While many of us have lost our language and culture because of colonisation, there are many who haven't and many working to restore and preserve it.
One thing I will make very clear is that all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples refer to ourselves as Black (sometimes without the C) regardless of what we look like. There are many Aboriginal people, like myself, who are pale skinned and still call ourselves Black and are accepted as such. This is because we do NOT adhere to blood quantum that colonisers try to put on us. Our connection to Blackness is about our connection to family and community, it is not *only* about how we look.
Hope this helps you understand a bit. I for one am very proud to be Blak. I'm very proud to be Aboriginal. If you want to learn more about Aboriginal culture and history, here's some resources:

āWait has she moved in yet?ā Ruthie smirked, eyeing Rafe over the lip of her glass as she took a sip.
Sofia thought about her things scattered across Rafeās house: her clothes in the drawers, the flowers sheād buy sitting in the vases, her toothbrush next to his in the bathroom. She hadnāt moved in but she may as well have.
āIām not living with a pogue.ā Sofia blinked in confusion at his callous words. She couldnāt see Rafeās face, but she saw Ruthie and Topperās faces perfectly. They were gleeful. Thatās what she was to themā a joke. The poor, pogue bartender Rafe dragged around everywhere. And of course she followed blindly. Like a good dog. Sofiaās stomach frothed and roiled with nausea, her heart splintering in her rib cage. Heartbreak was one thing, mortification was anotherā¦her face burned with both.
āI hope not.ā Ruthie chimed.
āI have standards.ā Rafe muttered. Sofiaās eyes roamed Rafeās back, the sinewy muscle imprinting on the material. The skin sheād kissed, the skin sheād grip. And now he was turning away from her. Shunning her. Twisting a knife in her heart. The rest of their words faded away like mist in the wind, leaving only the weight of emotion on Sofiaās shoulders. She wrapped her arms tightly around herself, in some self-soothing hug, as she sped back to her car, her breathing shallow and painful.
Standards. Of course Rafe Cameron had standards. And of course a girl like her didnāt meet them.
āSofia!ā She heard a voice call out behind her, barely perceptible over the sound of blood rushing through her head.
āSofia!ā This time she noticed, turning around to see no other than Rafe approach her, a smile on his lips, as if those same lips didnļæ½ļæ½ļæ½t just spew all that shit about her moments earlier.
āHey I thought you were with your family today?ā He asked, nearing her outside the country club gates.
Sofia spun back around with a scoff, heading to her car, not wanting to see his face for an another second, scared sheād burst into tears in front of him.
He bridged the gap between them almost instantly, his long legs striding towards her just as she reached her car door. By this point the tears in her eyes had spilled onto her cheeks, her vision blurring into a watery film.
Rafeās hand rested on her shoulder, as he turned her body gently to face his.
āHeyā hey heyā Sofia, whatās wrong?ā He said on seeing her crying, his voice soft like gossamer. It perturbed her how quickly he could flit from cold to caring, her anger veining into confusion at the paradox of a man in front of her.
āGet off of me,ā she pushed him off her, trying to sound intimidating but instead the words came out in a blubbering mess.
āHey? What happened huh?ā Rafeās face screwed in confusion. His words came off as desperate. Pleading. Sincereā¦ his hands hovering over her skin, still in the same place she pushed them off from. He could be so damn sweet sometimes. Maybe this was why his words pierced hardā because she never expected it from him.
āYou Rafe. You happened.ā She hissed, spinning around to get in her car.
But Rafe moved quicker, his big arms slamming the door shut, caging her small frame between them.
āWhat are you saying?āā he began.
āI heard what you said. With Topper and Ruthie.ā
She watched as his pupils widened, his jaw tightening.
āWhatā whenā¦?ā
Sofia rolled her eyes. āJust cause we hook up doesnāt mean Iām your girlfriend right?ā She mocked, throwing his words back at him.
āSofiaāā his face sunk, blue eyes getting even bluer.
ā18 months Rafe. Nearly two years and thatās what I am to you? A hook up?ā
āNo,ā he said, the word practically jumping out his mouth, āno of course not. Look you werenāt meant to hear thatāā
āSo that makes it ok then? For you to degrade me like that in front of your friends?ā
āNo, look I just wasā I didnāt meanāā he was stuttering, his hands reaching out to her, but never connecting the space.
āI was there for you Rafe. Did you just forget that?ā She thought about holding him, teary eyed on his yacht, consoling him for the death of his father. She thought about the nights where heād pepper her with kisses, his touch bordering on worship. She thought about his laugh, his smile, his sweet nothings. All that gone, as if it was always ephemeral.
āNo. I know you were there, and I appreciate it, more than you thinkā ok?ā
āBut Iām just a pogue right?ā She derided, a sarcastic, pained leer twisted on her lips.
Rafeās face contorted in an emotion she couldnāt place, his azure irises brewing with something darker. He lookedā¦devastated.
But she continued her barrage, words sharp, tongue fast. āAnd you have standards of course.ā
Lips twitched, eyebrows knitted in a hurt expression, Rafeās face bled into a heady emotion, a strange mix of regret and anger.
āSofiaā¦ā be began warily, voice like husk. Rafe instinctively lowered his hands, trying to find purchase on the skin of her shoulders but she slipped out of his grip like smoke from fire.
āIām sorry I couldnāt meet them for you Rafe.ā
And with that she got into the drivers seat, slamming the car door shut, trying hard not to spare another glance at him.
Careeing out the parking lot with the screech of her tyres behind her, Sofia couldnāt help but chance a look in the rear view mirror. Rafe stood in the distance watching as she drove away, his hands balled into fists at his sides.
Sofiaās heart spasmed with a resounding pain, her throat itching with unshed sobs. She quickly glued her eyes on the road, her fingers gripping the steering wheel as she drove further away from the country club back to her home on The Cutā¦driving further away from the kook sheād fallen in love with. The kook whoād just shattered everything they had built together.
