A little late to the party but I do have some thoughts about Fantasy High Junior Year now that it's over. First of all, overall? Great season, had lots of laughs... but man, is it just me, or were there a lot of parts in this season that just... were kind of annoying? For me specifically, two big things... and no, I'm not talking about the Rat Grinders. While I'm a little disappointed with how that ended, I'm not too bothered.

Like, idk if this is a hot take or not, because they were arguably the biggest parts of this season... but I found myself especially annoyed and/or disappointed about K2 and Porter.

Like, don't get me wrong, I thought K2 was funny—especially at first—and Porter being the main villain of the season was 100% for the bit and I can respect that... but man, I couldn't help but be disappointed with Porter going full irredeemably evil, as well as just straight-up annoyed by K2's existence (at least in regards to the story. gameplaywise, making a homunculus of their cleric was VERY smart) (oh god if K2 exists in our world now she might come after me. dont forget me).

In regards to Porter... he was for sure an ass, he caused Gorgug a lot of grief with the MCAT, but he also had such a really sweet moment with him when that thing finally got signed?? It was very, like, not a perfect teacher but someone who did have his best interests in mind, paired with a really nice message about how it's alright to get mad. It was an important part of Gorgug's character growth this season! Integral to unlocking his Barbificer subclass!

...and then all of that just gets thrown away because turns out Porter was evil the whole time and this was all just leading up to his big master plan of killing a god and becoming a god of war. He was never offering genuine advice, he never cared about Gorgug or had his best interests in mind, he thought Gorgug's fascination with Artificing was stupid... and now he's dead. The End.

And that just feels... really disappointing, honestly. He was a chill guy, and yeah he had no right to bar Gorgug from pursuing what he wants and force him to take so many years of school in a single year, but it also resulted in some serious growth on Gorgug's part! It was great! Him being Evil The Whole Time felt... almost like a character assassination, honestly.

And then... there's K2...

I'm gonna be real here. I don't care if using a homunculus and shit for multiple divine intervention rolls is how it actually works in the rulebooks, and I know that objectively having more rolls is always better, especially when the stakes are high... and especially considering that Ally was not getting the rolls they needed otherwise.

This was hilarious. It was also supremely annoying, because it just fully took away from any big moment Kristen could've had this season regarding her and Cassandra after her creation... and this happened TWICE.

Like, from a storytelling perspective, I feel Brennan's pain viscerally. These episodes were truly such an experience for me, because on one hand, I was laughing at the sheer comedy of it all... but there was another part of my brain thinking this truly, truly sucked.

Kristen was figuring out her devotion to Cassandra, finding an understanding in what her role as Cassandra's cleric is... and right at the end of the season all of that kind of comes to a halt because in the end K2 did the divine interventions.

...Well, at least that still leaves some room for whatever Kristen will have to deal with in Senior year. Unlike Porter, who is dead and gone and we're definitely not bringing him back.

There is something about Chainsaw Man, that, despite having a protagonist who loudly proclaims that his only goal in life/reason for living is to have sex with a girl, manages to portray women in so much more of realistic and respectful way than any of those animes where the protag is like.. a cynical nerd fighting the urge to look up a girl's skirt when she falls over.

I think I realized part of it is the fact that pretty much every physical encounter that Denji has is initiated by the girl, with usually explicit permission given for him to something, and he does exactly what they tell him he's allowed to do and nothing more.

He's not out there.. sneaking around hot springs or locker rooms or whatever, he actually does a really good job of respecting other people's boundaries, even though initimacy with women is literally his only driving motivation.

I think it's also the fact that they portray him and his motivations as really stupid/immature. He looks like he has no idea wtf is going on at any given moment, and he ends up coming off not as some gross annoying pervert, but as just.. a fucking teenager with little education who is a bit naïve about the world but is otherwise going through the normal lifestages that all teenagers go through.

He doesn't have bigger motivations because he has never known anything bigger. And he is going through puberty, so of course he's thinking about sex. He doesn't have any family and hardly any friends, so finding something to live for is kind of hard, so it makes sense that he would just strive towards the 1 thing that is supposedly pure euphoria, but I think it is crucial that this is his driving force and he doesn't just want it to happen he wants it to happen in the right way. He wants to go through all of the motions to experience it consensually, I think in part because he knows that once he gets what he wants, then he has to find a new motivation.

And also because he is just not a fucking asshole, I mean.. he is, but not in the way that he would ever hurt women. He wants them to like him.

i do think higher ed, especially competitive educations/fields do function to stifle inborn curiosity. however, i'm not sure there's many ways to avoid this while maintaining an efficient transfer of skills/knowledge (is it the student's job to integrate coursework into their own innate curiosity)? but either way all those "you too can read big book" or "you too can watch High Filme" posts are encouraging curiosity from a place of confidence towards the text--you may not understand fully/right away but keep receiving it openly and deliberately and see what happens

Also for me this seems like the most plausible explanation for that line. It hasn't crossed my mind before, but it makes so much sense when you put it in context and consider Aku's character. And I can't help but consider that meta knowledge in the back of my mind that we somehow need to build up to the S5 post-credits scene, and that seems absolutely impossible if Atsushi needs to start giving summaries of who they are to Aku and he goes "ah yeah, my rival for whom I have sacrified myself to guarantee his safety because I care so much and trust him with my greatest weakness because he's the only one who can show me the light and the worth of my own cursed life but my only way of showing is through action, yes Iiiii remember now!" Like yes it sounds ridiculous and something like this would completely and utterly undermine all of Akutagawa's character growth (and I believe out of the whole cast he's had the most interesting and in-depth development; yes I am very biased too but shh). Unless Asagiri pulls off some crazy plot twist and straight up returns his memories, IF they're truly gone, in like 2 hours. But considering the painfully slow pace the manga is currently going at, I'm fully converting to your theory now.

The only thing that could sway me from this train of thought is how when Aku said it, his eyes seemed so empty and liveless, as if he's being born anew and really doesn't remember all of Atsushi’s influence that has been slowly bringling the light back into his eyes. But yea, I still can't imagine how that tiny little problem could resolve itself before the epic Singularity fight, so I'm just praying whatever happens is gonna be well thought out, and they get their special moment together like we've already seen.

I've been thinking about Akutagawa's "Who are you?" for HOURS and I'm begging- hands and knees -for this to be a "get your shit together atsushi" moment and not actually "whoops brain wipe because of vampire shit" moment.

Like, these two goobers know each other better than they'd like to admit- particularly when it comes to combat because of how they've fought side-by-side so many times. So, it would make sense for Akutagawa to see Atsushi's current state and go "I don't know any pathetic losers like you" because he doesn't have time to deal with Atushi's current state at the moment and also because he's just that kind of blunt asshole (in the most affectionate way possible). The weretiger he knows always fights back and never gives in and is constantly fighting to live- to prove he deserves to live -no matter who the opponent or how powerful. Yet, the person before him is begging for death and on his knees before a foe, crying and sniveling. That person isn't someone he recognizes. And as we all know, Akutagawa isn't someone to mince words or give platitudes, especially to someone like Atushi who he regards as his rival in a sense, so he'd never say anything like "this isn't like you" or crap like that. And this goes double since he's now also busy facing pretty much a god and doesn't have time to dissect whatever's up with Atsushi.

So, of course, the natural thing for him to do is be his usual, straightforward, and somewhat mean self. "Who are you?" Not a simple question of identity but a statement of disappointment (for lack of a better word here at 1AM). A challenge directed at Atsushi to get it together and remember what they're doing here. Obviously, Atsushi's behavior is the result/has been heavily influenced by- y'know -literally everything that's happened in the last few chapters but regardless of whether or not Akutagwa even knows that (betting on not at the moment, me thinks), what he does know is that this isn't the time to be letting Fyodor have his way and that he needs to fight. He's telling Atsushi to stand up and be the weretiger he knows and has fought beside every time and, in terms of SSKK, his other half.

And now, we're all just waiting for that moment when Atsushi gets back up and Akutagawa gets his partner back and then they bully (AKA flirt) with each other in standard SSKK fashion while they beat up Fyodor and his god best friend.

Of course, I've already seen a couple other people mention this idea as well because A) we're all coping together and B) it would be a clear and interesting narrative line to take (in my personal opinion). A show of how these two enemies/rivals truly see each other and that they are a team despite appearances. A moment that reminds us, and potentially even them, that they know each other better than they think.

Probably just stating the obvious here or doing a longer-winded version of what everyone's already been thinking (especially since I'm like 3 days late to the party) but whatever lmao. Just needed to yell into the void a little bit and put the manifestation of this scene into the world.
