Eye health

I recently had an eye exam. I haven't been going to the eye doctor on a regular basis because I don't have any eye problems except some blurry vision and dry eye (both minor).

I know like the skin, eyes are an organ exposed to the outside world. This includes allergens, environmental toxins, UV rays from the sun, and free radicals. Just like you would apply sunscreen, vitamin C, and retinol to the skin to protect it from UV rays and oxidative stress, wearing sunglasses that offer 100% UV protection and eating a diet rich in antioxidant vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids can help. I've been wearing sunscreen since I was 21 but I haven't been wearing sunglasses and I just found out they are important because they are like sunscreen but for the eyes and can protect your eyes from developing conditions like cataracts and macular degeneration with age.

I already eat a health diet and supplement with a multivitamin for vitamin A, C, and E and flax oil for omega-3. I recently bought 2 pairs of 100% UV protecting sunglasses - one to keep in my car for when I drive and another to keep at home to take with me when I want to go for a walk. They look really nice and fit the bridge of my nose without pinching it (I've had issues with eye glasses in the past doing this).

I did want to get a pair of eyeglasses to wear while I read or work on my work and home laptop. I have decent vision (I can see fine without glasses) but I have blurry and farsighted vision. I don't want to get contacts because they look uncomfortable and I heard of scary LASIK side effects + it's so expensive and insurance doesn't cover it. So glasses would be my best option for now.

I do tend to use blue light filters on my phone and laptop screens so it's warm and red tinted. I will use dark mode on some apps. Bright blue light does irritate my eyes and give me a headache. I do have a warm-tone light in my room.

And finally I spend way too much time looking at my screens, which is probably the main cause of my dry eye. I do want to minimize this, but with time. At least I should be taking breaks here and there so I don't cause any eye strain/dryness.

Aside from some vision blurriness and dry eye, I don't have any major issues. But a healthy diet, sunglasses, prescription eyeglasses, minimizing blue light exposure, managing allergies, getting good sleep, and minimizing screen time/taking breaks can help a lot. Also managing diet by not eating a lot of sugar and not becoming diabetic can help because that can impact eye health and cause blindness.
