It was something you always noticed. Kimi’s hair was always unruly after a race, but after being with him for almost a year, you noticed the little things. His curls used to be so well-formed and clean, but now, it’s like he was losing his curl pattern. And given that you also had curly hair, you decided to teach him your tricks during an off weekend.
“I don’t see why this is important,” He complained as soon as you started rinsing his hair. “This seems like a lot.”
“I haven’t even done anything yet,” You laughed as you made sure none of the water got in his eyes. “This is just water.”
“But the number of things you have is concerning,” He replied as he glanced over at the three bottles and diffuser on the counter.
“That’s nothing,” You dismissed as you grabbed the shampoo specifically for curly hair. “Now, this is my shampoo. The first time I do it-”
“You’re gonna do it more than once?” Kimi cut you off as he tried to sit down, but you put your hand on his shoulder to sit him back down in front of the sink.
“Yes, the first time, I’ll give you a head massage. It helps get all the dead skin off your scalp and It’s just really relaxing,” You explained as you applied the shampoo to his roots. As you began working it through his hair. You knew better than to explain your process when you were scratching his scalp because you knew he would not be listening. As soon as you started, his eyes shut and that was game over. After a few minutes, you turned the water back on to rinse it. Maybe, you let a little splash onto Kimi’s face, causing his eyes to snap open and look up at you. “The first shampoo is to get everything off your scalp. The second one is to get all the dead skin out of your hair.”
“That sounds gross,” Kimi cringed as he settled back into his seat. “It’s just two, right?”
“Two shampoos, yes,” You answered as you started with the second shampoo treatment. “Then, we’ll condition once and put curl cream in your hair. I’ll show you how to form your curls, and then I’ll help you dry your hair with a diffuser.”
“What even is that?” He asked confused as you turned the water off to let the conditioner sit.
“I don’t know how to describe it,” You laughed as you sat on his lap to pass the time. Kimi immediately tried to bring his hands to his hair, but you grabbed them and held them to his side. “No, don’t touch it! Leave it alone!”
“That’s not fair!” He complained but leaned into you to kiss you.
“I know what you’re trying to do,” You dragged out as you pulled away and leaned your forehead against his. You felt his arms trying to pull themselves from your hold, so you adjusted your grip, “And it’s not going to work.”
“How long do I need to leave this in? It itches,” Kimi complained with no real heat behind his words. It did not really itch, but it was a different formula than he was used to. The texture was just weird to him, and he wanted it off.
“A few more minutes,” You said as you looked at his hair. The curls were starting to form back on their own, so that was going to make your job easier later on. “If it’s really bugging you, I can rinse it now and we can move on to the cream and diffusing.”
“Please?” He asked he gave you puppy eyes. He knew you could never say no to him then.
“Fine,” You sighed in mock offense as you stood up and walked around to stand at his side to wash the conditioner out. “I just don’t think you’re used to it, bu don’t worry. You’ll learn to love it.”
“That sounds threatening,” Kimi laughed as he closed his eyes when you turned the water back on.
“Take it how you wish,” You joked as you finished rinsing his hair. You grabbed a towel after turning the water off and gently dried his hair a bit. “Here, stand in front of the mirror and I’ll show you how to define your curls.”
“I never knew it was this complicated,” Kimi groaned as he stood up and stood beside you. You removed the towel and inspected the natural curls he had already formed. You were just planning on working with what he had. They were fairly spaced out right and they were already semi-formed. They just needed a little cleaning up, and that’s exactly what the curl cream would do. “What is that?”
“Curl cream,” You said simply as you put a little on your fingers and started to run it through a section of his hair. “It’s going to help your curls hold their shape and be less frizzy.”
“Is it going to make them hard?” Kimi complained as he watched you through the mirror.
“First off, that’s what she said,” You giggle as you move on to the next section. Kimi laughed a little, but he gently slapped your arm in response. “Secondly, no. It’s not. All it does is help them hold. They’ll still be soft. You’ve never noticed my hair being crunchy.”
“Oh, good,” Kimi said to himself. He watched you for a minute before asking, “What are you doing now?”
“I’m using my fingers to wrap your curls, so they will be more defined,” You explained, slowing down to show him. “Look. I take this piece of hair, wrap it around my finger, and then gently, keynote on gently, twirl it off. You try.” He tried it. Did it look perfect? No. Would it work for now? Yes. He’s learning, but it's a good start. “That looks good! You’ll get better, I promise.”
“As long as you’re here to help,” He sighed. “It’s a lot of work.”
“You don’t always have to do all of this,” You explained. “Some days, just washing with shampoo and conditioner works just fine. Your curls just needed some TLC today, so we did the whole nine yards, but normally, I would not do the curl cream or diffusing. Only when I’m feeling extra.”
“Oh, good to know,” Kimi trailed off as you finished off forming his curls and moved to grab the diffuser. “This is next, right?”
“Yes! If you want, I can show you how to do it, then let you. Or I can just do it,” You offered, but he immediately handed you the dryer. You chuckled at his eagerness to get rid of the object but started to blow dry his hair. “Flip your head down.”
“I feel like this is unnecessary,” He grumbled but did so without question. You did not listen to him as you just laughed to yourself and moved on with blow-drying his hair. “Why is it so cold?”
“It’s cold to start with, but I’ll warm it up as we finish up,” You replied. “Heat ruins your hair, so even though we’re blow-drying your hair, it’s going to be cool air.”
“I don’t like it,” He groaned as he tried to lean away from the cool air.
“Well, lucky for you, you don’t have a lot of hair, so you're basically done,” You said as you ran your hand through a couple of strands without separating them, and you noticed they were completely done. You decided to explain the rules as you started putting everything away. “Don’t brush it, don't run your hands through it, and do not put a helmet on for a while. In a way, it’s a good thing you don’t have a race for a couple of weeks.”
“About that,” Kimi trailed off, causing your face to drop immediately, “I was gonna go karting tomorrow.”
“You better not! I worked hard to make those curls!”

cassian x reader: dating a high maintenance girlie
Hello, if this seems extra its cause it is but this is quite literally my high maintenance routine. This is just one of my favorite parts of life and I love the idea of these big burly men doing skincare with their girls.
i’m a high maintenance girly bc i like to be. pls this isn’t a pick me bullshit type thing. Im a girls girl yall.
-This man doesn’t know shit about self care.
-He knows the basics but like, nothing that would genuinely make him feel comfy in his own skin even more than he already is.
-He uses 3-in-1. Technically 4-in-1 because face wash is separate formula than body wash but you digress.
-Y'all know that stereotype of a guy glowing up after getting a girlfriend? You guys were the blueprint for that.
-You taught him his hair type (2A), his skin type (dry), his preferred scent profile for himself (spicy, woody, aromatic). What his favorite types of care products are, he loves leave-in conditioner, cream cleansers. He’s not a fan of super heavy moisturizers because he’ll get overstimulated.
-These are just things this man has never thought about.
-When you two leave the house for a Court Duty, you end up doing Cassian's hair. He wants to look nice, for lots of reasons, but especially because he wants to be let back into Summer. He wants to be able to take you on Summer Court dates!
-He lives for that sliver of time you’re able to squeeze in before going somewhere. You doing his hair, him staring at you in the mirror if you’re behind him. If you’re in front of him, his large hands on your plush hips as you bite your lip in concentration trying to make his wild hair look nice. The feeling of your fingers through his scalp and how even when there’s a knot, you never tug or pull hard enough that it hurts him. You’re gentle and sweet with him even when he thinks he doesn’t deserve it (spoiler: he always deserves it)
-He loves how high maintenance you are, it helps him remember to take care of himself.
-You do a little self care sunday reset type of thing. It helps you get ready for the week.
-He finds these routines utterly fascinating.
-He begs to watch you do them, not even in the dirty way but it's just so interesting to watch. You also banned him from getting frisky when you do the routines. This was your time, he was welcome to watch but he would step out if you asked because you needed to be alone.
-Some days, your routines are a bit more intense, such as the monthly waxing for your legs and armpits. Coochie too.
-He flinches every single time he watches you wax some part of you, especially the coochie. He kind of has an attachment to that part.
-You do the whole shabang sometimes. Wax legs, armpits, etc. Exfoliating shampoo, regular shampoo, conditioning mask, conditioner. Then the body stuff, exfoliating, shaving any parts you didn’t want to wax, double cleansing your body with antibacterial then the fun scented stuff. Then when you’re out of the bath, face extractions, face wash, whatever else you want to add. And then body creams. Then you’re done.
-He’s just amazed every single time.
-He also loves that you make a little thing out of it. You make it fun for you. There's a whole closet filled with different scents, treatments, formulas, etc.
-You always smell good. There are deodorants shoved in every single bag you own, every room for that matter. Massive perfume, bodycare, candle, anything that makes a room or you smell good, you have it.
-Even going to bed, you put perfume on.
-He loves that you say “I only wear it for myself Cass, it’s just a bonus that you love it.” Because he knows it’s true.
-Sometimes he goes in just to sniff around. The fool just stands there and sniffs stuff. You had no idea why he decided to sit in the closet and sniff things in the dark. However, you did know that when you opened the door to see a nearly 7 foot tall clown smelling your beloved collection, you screamed bloody murder.
So loud Azriel came running with his knives. Cassian just looked at you like “what’s your deal bro?”
You were trained by two of the most powerful warriors, yet your first reaction was to scream.
“Why didn’t you try to fight me?” Cassian asked, “I’ve seen you kick someone down for less.”
“I am in my bathrobe Cassian! You want me swinging my legs around with my flaps out?”
Azriel chose to leave the room after that.
-You also always have perfectly manicured nails. And somehow someway you taught your tricks to the Valkyries so now they are able to have beautiful nails while still disemboweling enemies.
-Great, now he and Az have four she-devils with perfectly manicured nails and glossy hair that can slay their enemies with one swipe. The four of you were feral together. He wouldn’t be surprised if he walked into the camps one day to see some guys dead because they were sexist.
-You also got him and Az roped into these skincare nights.
-He loves sitting there with a face mask on and you using one of your crystal rollers rolling it onto his skin. Bougie bitch eats it up.
-One of your favorite things to do is wear a sheet mask and hide in a closet.  Scares him every single time.
-Your stuff is everywhere, you’d be damned if you were uncomfy in your own home. After talking to Cassian and Azriel to make sure you weren’t being a shitty roommate, you kind of went crazy.
-Lip balms in every room, hand creams, candles. Hair ties and claw clips. Fuzzy blankets stashed in every trunk you could find.
-Rhys made fun of it, but ate his words pretty quickly when Feyre saw the beauty of having lip balms and hair ties/claw clips stashed everywhere. (and he later found the joys of said products and gave you a gift basket as an apology
.you didn’t even remember that he judged you because you simply didn’t care).
-Also, the guys live in fucking luxury. The home always smells good, they never have to worry about chapped lips or dry skin. Or pesky hair in the way. Anywhere they want is a blanket or cute pillow to prop their heads up.
-they were living like animals until you showed up.
-Cassian having a mate is the best thing to ever happen to Az.
-Feyre, Nesta, Elain, Emerie, Gwyn, Morrigan and even Amren shop your stash of body care if they wanna smell a certain way for a certain fun time (wink).
-Even Nuala and Cerridwen will approach and ask you. Obviously you say yes. You own so much you’ll never get through everything in time.
-Plus you’re a Girls Girl. You’re gonna be there for your girls in your life.
-Speaking of the ladies in your life.
-When you and Cassian have twin baby girls, you were ecstatic. Either way you were going to be happy but you always wanted a girl and now you have two!
-Teaching them how to take care of their skin and hair has been the best for you and Cassian. He loves watching his girls play with their hair. He loves having his hair braided by them.
-Family self care nights become a Thing (that sometimes an Uncle or Aunt will join).
-He loves you because you taught him how to actually care for himself and his mental health. You showed him how he needs to stop and appreciate the smaller things. That not everything has to be a chore.
-He loves you more than anything, maintenance and all.

nurturing my natural self (part 4)
Disclaimer: I made this, like all my other posts, for myself, but if you are reading this, I'm not a doctor, and this is basic researched knowledge. If you realize that you need help, please seek a doctor!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Allowing Your Hair to Recover
Nurturing your hair is just as important. This allows your natural hair to breathe and thrive. While protective styles like braids, wigs, and weaves can be great, they can also harm your hair if you don't give it a break. It's crucial to find a routine and products that work for your hair type and porosity.
I want to grow my hair out so I can wear it more often, but I’ve struggled to find styles that suit my current length after chopping off my dead ends. Cutting those damaged ends felt like a weight lifted off my chest! I’m investing in my hair care and currently have a protective style in, but I’ll switch back to my natural hair once it’s out.
I’ve found more styling ideas on TikTok, which helps since it can be tough to find looks for my length. My hair is a bit longer than the TWA (teeny weeny afro) stage and is growing well. The health of my hair is very important, and I plan to continue adding to my routine.
Tumblr media
- Nutrients: Protein: Essential for hair structure (lean meats, fish, eggs, legumes). Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Support scalp health (fatty fish, walnuts, flaxseeds). Vitamin A: Promotes sebum production for a healthy scalp (carrots, sweet potatoes). Vitamin C: Supports collagen production and iron absorption (citrus fruits, berries). Biotin: A B-vitamin crucial for hair growth (eggs, nuts, avocados). Vitamin E: Improves blood circulation to the scalp (nuts, seeds, leafy greens).
- Hydration: Drink plenty of water to keep your hair and scalp hydrated.
- Scalp care: Cleansing, exfoliation & massage: using a gentle shampoo, keep your scalp clean to prevent build-up, which can hinder growth. occasionally exfoliate your scalp to remove dead skin cells and promote circulation (started using aztec clay, 10/10 so far, loving it). massage your scalp to stimulate blood flow and promote hair growth.
- Moisturizing Oils: jojoba, argan, grapeseed & avocado oil. These help hydrate hair by adding moisture and nutrients. Apply these oils to damp hair to hydrate it, either as part of a deep conditioning treatment or after washing.
- Moisture-Sealing Oils: castor oil, coconut oil, olive oil, avocado (serves as both) & shea butter. These create a barrier to lock in moisture and prevent dehydration. Use these after applying a moisturizing oil or treatment to lock in the hydration, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends of the hair. I don't use these much if at all unless I'm focusing on the ends of my hair because of my scalp condition.
- Heat Management: If you’re using heat, always protect your hair. Heat protectants are a must to prevent damage from styling tools. Try to minimize heat use overall or stick to low-heat settings.
- Detangling: a major part of healthy hair care. Always use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers (if using both, then use your fingers first), and make sure your hair is wet with conditioner to prevent breakage.
- Seasonal Hair Care: your hair’s needs can change with the seasons. In the winter, it might need more moisture, while summer humidity might require lighter products.
- Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Choose sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners to avoid stripping natural oils. reduce or avoid harsh chemical treatments (e.g., relaxers, dyes) that can weaken hair.
- Protective styling: using low-manipulation styles to protect your ends (braids, twists) can help prevent breakage. styles that are too tight can lead to traction alopecia.
- Hair care ingredients: it's important to find what works for you. what works for kayla may not work for kiara, yk? for example, i've read and heard about others who benefitted from Coconut oil, shea butter, castor oil, jojoba oil, rosemary oil, and mint oil are examples of hair care ingredients known for their nourishing, moisturizing, and growth-stimulating properties. While not all of these oils are beneficial for managing my seborrheic dermatitis, certain ones, like jojoba oil and rosemary oil, have been especially helpful in controlling flare-ups.
- Routine: Find a fitting routine for your type and porosity. A general one is: shampoo + condition + rinse + leave in + style OR shampoo + deep condition + rinse + leave in + style . People include pre-poo (pre-shampoo) to detangle, some people even condition their hair before deep conditioning. this can actually cause your deep conditioner to be less effective. my current routine to which pre-pooing will be added: detangle with water + shampoo/aztec clay mask w acv + deep condition + rinse + leave-in conditioner + blow-dry on low heat. this is to prep my hair for like braids or something but if i was doing a wash n go, i wouldn't bow dry, i'd style with either a curl custard and gel or a hair butter (to lock int he moisture) + gel since i already used leave-in.
- Trims, Patience, and Stress Management: Regular trims are necessary to keep split ends at bay. Managing stress and getting enough sleep can make a huge difference in your hair’s health. And remember, patience is key—healthy hair growth takes time!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some ingredients to beware of:
- Sulfates (e.g. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate): Strips natural oils, causing dryness.
- Parabens (e.g. Methylparaben): Preservatives that may disrupt hormones.
- Silicones (e.g. Dimethicone): Can build up on hair, leading to dullness.
- Alcohols (e.g. Isopropyl alcohol): Drying effects on hair.
- Formaldehyde (e.g. DMDM Hydantoin): Can cause irritation and allergic reactions.
- Artificial Fragrances: Can irritate sensitive skin and cause allergic reactions.
- Harsh Detanglers (e.g., Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Cetrimonium Chloride): Can strip moisture and cause buildup.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hair Care Essentials
- clarifying shampoo (deeply cleanses to remove buildup, excess oil, and impurities. Ideal for occasional use to refresh hair but can strip natural oils with frequent use.)
- hydrating shampoo (gentle cleansers that don’t strip natural oils; look for hydrating formulas.)
- co-wash (cleansing conditioner that helps remove dirt while maintaining moisture, suitable for regular use. i.e. when you wanna wash your hair but it's too soon use shampoo bc you don't wanna dry it out)
- conditioner (moisturize and detangle hair after shampooing.)
- blow dryer (better than air drying, esp useful for when you're doing styles that require dry hair)
- spray bottle (refresh, dampen, moisturize)
- plastic cap (to hold your hair when you put hair masks on)
- leave in conditioner (retain moisture and detangle hair.)
- deep conditioner/hair mask (Used weekly or bi-weekly to provide intense moisture and repair. choose one best suited to your hai-- what your hair needs the most in the moment)
- hydrating creams & oils (shea butter, coconut oil, or argan oil to nourish and moisturize.)
- natural oils: coconut oil, olive oil, jojoba oil, or castor oil can help seal in moisture, add shine, and promote hair growth.
- essential oils: tea tree oil, lavender oil, and peppermint oil can help with scalp health and stimulation.
- curl creams or gels: defining curls, providing hold, and reducing frizz.
- edge control & brush sleek edges and maintaining hairstyles.
- hair mousse: volume and lightweight hold.
- wide-tooth comb: for detangling without causing breakage & combing out.
- detangling brush: for detangling (denman, unbrush etc)
- fine-tooth comb: sectioning and parting hair
- satin or silk scarves/bonnets/pillowcases: protect hair from friction while sleeping, reducing frizz and breakage.
- hair clips and bands: sectioning hair during styling and care routines.
- heat protectant spray or cream: if you use heat styling tools (like flat irons or blow dryers) to protect your hair from damage.
- trimming tools: scissors handy for regular trims to remove split ends and encourage healthy growth.
- scalp massager: promote blood circulation and stimulate hair growth.
- scalp Treatments: tea tree oil for dandruff or other scalp concerns.

Note
As I go through my self care Sunday routine, I have been hit with the idea of OP men participating as well. Sheet masks? Fancy facials? Nail painting? Hair masks? My brain is running a mile a minute.
(I imagine Zoro grumbling about it and then liking it so much that he has to join every week)
Ohhh anon I have had thoughts about this before.
I feel like Zoro is absolutely the kind of man who responds well to praise and compliments--he protests and groans about it when you stick a sheet mask on his face, but afterwards, when you tell him how his skin looks so soft and it makes you wanna touch it more, he's already asking when your next self-care day is. Probably gets caught by at least one crew member trying out your different lotions on his own and smelling them because they remind him of you.
Sanji loves nothing more than quality time spent pampering you in every way possible--I mean come on, the man whose hands are probably soft as silk? He's got everything you need for a self-care afternoon together, and probably knows your favorite scents, any skin sensitivities, and the best types of products for your exact hair texture and length. Compliments and sweet swords are flowing from him like water throughout the day, and he's making sure you don't have to lift a finger.
Ace is always game for whatever--as long as he gets to enjoy the feel of you sitting in his lap while you cover his sun-drenched skin in serums, he's happy. He will absolutely fall asleep while you wash his hair and massage his scalp in the tub, even though he swears he'll stay awake and return the favor. But don't worry, he'll make up for it by keeping the water the perfect temperature while you enjoy your nice, long soak.
Law won't protest, but he also won't actively seem like he's enjoying it when you insist on conditioning his face scruff for him in the bath, or using a skin scrub on him, even though inside he's buzzing from the attention. He revels in the intimacy of helping you apply lotion after the bath, loves the excuse to have his hands on every inch of your skin, enjoying the rare moment of calm and quiet together before he's called away for something or another.
BONUS: the best platonic self-care buddy imo? Chopper. He's so enthusiastic about it, and knows how to make his own natural skin treatments! He loves it when you help him condition his coat--he's so poofy and fluffy afterwards, and he's practically floating from all the attention from the crew as they coo over how soft he is.

Self Care Tips 💄
Tumblr media
Exude Wealth and Class
In the spirit of lightheartedness, I want to share some of the self-care habits I've developed that have helped me build discipline and routine. Oftentimes, when we speak so seriously about self-mastery it may become unrelatable. I know that we women pride ourselves on our dedication to looking and feeling like our best selves. This skill can be the stepping stone to new heights. Within numerology, the number one represents the self; the very first step to improvement begins with us. Hygiene reflects mental sharpness, wealth, class, and spiritual favor. Instead of denying yourself love because you look unconventional cultivate your look. Be unique. Be the representation you want to see in the world. Please research the tips I provide, as they may not be compatible with everyone.
Tumblr media
Facial Massages. Wow oh wow. These have seriously changed my life. I do them to shape my face and help me relax. They increase blood flow and give your skin a youthful, buoyant look. I also massage my neck and shoulders; I really love to do this at night to help me destress.
Hair Steam Treatment. Whenever I moisturize or condition my hair I ensure that it is dripping wet. I apply whatever product I want to really absorb into my hair, then put on a shower cap or processing cap. I leave it on for an hour and the heat from my scalp steams the water infusing my hair with hydration. My hair is so soft every time I do this and gives me a break between steps.
Bathing. Seriously, if all you can afford is 20 minutes a week you will be thanking me. Bathing is an experience. Sitting in the tub, watching the bubbles glisten on your skin, the warmth and aromatics filling your senses, complete relaxation being submerged in nature's hug. A good bath will make you forget everything troubling for a true moment of bliss. When it feels like the world is crumbling down on you take a salt bath and pray.
Foot care. Now this is a big one. The soles of your feet are your connection to the divine feminine. Cleansing and renewing your feet is important for spiritual well-being. Make sure you also take care of your nails. Weekly manicures and biweekly pedicures will keep everything prim and proper.
Dry Brushing. OMGGG! I SWEAR by dry brushing my skin has never been more supple. I've used various forms of exfoliation and got the best results from dry brushing. I like to do a light chemical exfoliation to help renew the skin this, however, is optional.
Movement. I know we're having a great time ladies but this is my final tip. Move your body! Stagnant energy will spill over into everything you do. Stop rotting in bed. Go outside, do yoga, workout, dance, whatever you feel called to do even if it's just 5 minutes a day. If we want to see movement in our lives we need to move ourselves.

Hi! Do you have an easy peasy guide to skincare and hygiene for depressed dummies? 😃
Hi love! Sharing a high-level, basic skincare routine and hygiene tips to follow:
Morning Skincare:
Gentle facial cleanser & water
Vitamin C serum + hyaluronic acid
Facial moisturizer
Sunscreen designed for your face (at least SPF 50 – I think that this La Roche Posay SPF 60 choice is the best option for the money)
Apply sunscreen to your hands, neck, and any parts that will be exposed to the sun (Don't forget to use an SPF lip balm, too!)
Nighttime Skincare:
Remove any makeup (I love these Simple makeup wipes!)
Gentle cleanser
Toner/serums (only use AHAs like glycolic acid or lactic acid and retinol/retinoids at night, using them during the day can increase chances of sunburning)
Facial moisturizer (can be heavier than the one you use during the day, especially in the winter or if you have dry skin)
Spot treatments (if needed)
Eye cream
Skincare Extras:
Exfoliate your face 2-3 times/week (I love the First Aid Beauty Radiance Pads but the CeraVe Renewing Salicylic Acid Cleanser is a great drugstore option!)
Always use disposable cloths instead of a regular towel on your face to reduce bacteria, breakouts, or infections (I love the Clean Skin Club ones!)
Exfoliate your body 2-3 times a week using a dry brush or a scrub (I love the CeraVe Salicylic Acid Body Cleanser, but my favorite is the OUAI Sugar Scrub) and follow it up with a hydrating body moisturizer
Always exfoliate and moisturize before shaving, waxing, or other body hair removal treatments (look up the timeframes for the type of hair removal you choose)
Scrub under your nails daily with antibacterial soap & water and a nail brush
Vaseline is a versatile staple item that can be used as an affordable alternative to an eye cream, cuticle oil, lip balm, or hand cream, and can be used to treat any dry, cracked, or rough patches on the skin
Use a hand lotion and moisturizer on your feet with socks every night before bed
Aloe vera and coconut oil are great skincare staples to keep on hand to soothe burns, irritation, or inflamed skin
Haircare Tips:
Shampoo your skull, condition the rest: Focus shampoo on your roots and work it through your scalp; concentrate conditioner on the ends and work your way up until you reach the base of your skull - around your upper ear lobe
Always comb, never brush, your hair when wet: Gently use a wide-tooth comb, from root to tip, on wet hair to prevent breakage
Use a special towel to dry your hair: My favorite is from Crown Affair (pricey for what it is but worthwhile in the long-term), but a Turbie Twist from the drugstore works infinitely better than a regular towel that weighs down and causes frizzy, damaged hair
Always use a heat protection spray before blow drying or straightening/curling your hair: (Briogeo and Oribe products are my love for all haircare products, including their blowdry creams – also love R +Co. for a heat protection styling mist)
Choose your hair ties wisely: Use seamless or silk hair ties exclusively to prevent breakage or awkward creases on your hair. Wear a silk scrunchie if you prefer. These hair ties from Amazon are my holy grail (only $7 for 100 hair ties!), and they come in a portable ziplock bag
Use dryer sheets to minimize hair frizz and water or Vaseline to slick back fly-aways
Other Hygiene Tips:
Brush teeth, floss, & skincare (2x/day); Get a water pick, too, if you can!
Use a toothbrush cover at all times; Close the toilet seat before flushing
Wash your body towels at least once a week
Wash your pillowcases weekly and sheets at least once every 2 weeks
Throw out and replace your mascara every 2-3 months
Change your underwear and socks daily or more after sweating/working out
For those who menstruate, change your pad or tampon every 3-4 hours
Vulva owners: Use a fragrance-free soap on the outside, only water to clean the inside – no fancy wipes or douching. Wipe front to back!
Wear cotton underwear whenever possible; Find a fabric that breathes
Have a similar buttocks cleansing routine that you do for your face to prevent embarrassing zits or acne
Don't shave between waxes; Use tweezers if necessary a few days after your hair removal treatment
Always wash your hands before touching your face
Hope this helps xx

Understanding PCOS: Unravelling the Complexity of a Common Hormonal Disorder
Hello and welcome back to Shining Through PCOS! I’m Luciana, your guide on this journey through the complexities of PCOS and its impact on our skin, hair, and overall confidence. Today, we’re diving deeper into what PCOS really is, how it’s diagnosed, and the unique ways it affects women.
What is PCOS?
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is more than just a hormonal imbalance; it's a multifaceted condition that affects approximately 1 in 10 women of reproductive age around the globe (Singh et al., 2023). The symptoms can vary significantly, from irregular menstrual cycles to the presence of polycystic ovaries and elevated levels of androgens—often referred to as male hormones (Singh et al., 2023). One of the most challenging symptoms is hirsutism, characterised by the growth of coarse, dark hair in areas typically associated with male hair patterns, such as the face, chest, and back (Spritzer et al., 2022).
For many women, including myself, the emotional toll of excess hair growth is profound. It can feel like a constant battle against your own body, leading to feelings of frustration and embarrassment, especially when it’s in visible areas. I remember feeling overwhelmed by societal expectations of beauty while grappling with my own unwanted hair growth, leading me to seek out various treatments such as depilatory creams and shaving that only exacerbated my issue.
Diagnosing PCOS: The Complexity of Symptoms
Diagnosing PCOS is not always a straightforward process. This can be quite difficult because it can manifest so differently from woman to woman. In an attempt to help doctors better identify the condition, the Rotterdam criteria were introduced (Smet & McLennan, 2018). This diagnostic tool provides a standardised way to assess whether someone has PCOS by looking at three key factors:
Irregular or absent periods – This signals potential ovulatory dysfunction.
Signs of hyperandrogenism (excess androgens) – Such as excess hair growth, acne, or thinning hair on the scalp.
Polycystic ovaries on an ultrasound – Where the ovaries show multiple, small cysts.
To meet the diagnosis of PCOS, two out of these three criteria must be present. What’s important to note is that you don’t need to meet all three, which can lead to different manifestations of PCOS depending on the patient (Smet & McLennan, 2018). However, the absence of a universal diagnostic test can lead to delays in receiving proper care.
Many women find themselves navigating a confusing landscape where symptoms overlap with other conditions, making it crucial for us to advocate for our health. Often, healthcare providers may overlook the complexity of PCOS, attributing symptoms solely to lifestyle factors or weight issues, rather than considering the broader hormonal picture (Dewani et al., 2023).
The Hormonal Landscape and Its Impact on Women
The hormonal imbalance at the heart of PCOS doesn’t just affect our reproductive health; it also has significant implications for our metabolic and emotional well-being. Women with PCOS are at a higher risk of developing insulin resistance, which can lead to weight gain and complicate our ability to manage our symptoms (Barber et al., 2019). This can create a vicious cycle, where weight gain exacerbates hirsutism, making it even more challenging to feel a sense of autonomy over our bodies (Barber et al., 2019).
Moreover, the psychological aspects of PCOS are often overlooked. Many women report feelings of anxiety and depression associated with their symptoms, which can be exacerbated by societal pressures and beauty standards (Almhmoud et al., 2024). When we look at the prevalence of conditions such as generalised anxiety and depressive disorders amongst diagnosed women with PCOS, the rate is between 28% and 39% for anxiety, and 11% to 25% for depression (Dewani et al., 2023). This makes it all the more essential to recognise that PCOS is not just a reproductive disorder but a condition that impacts many facets of our lives.
The Role of Laser-Based Hair Reduction (LBHR)
For women dealing with hirsutism, finding effective and long-lasting treatment options can feel like a constant battle. One treatment that has gained significant attention is Laser-Based Hair Reduction (LBHR), which offers a long-term solution for managing excessive hair growth (Hosseini et al., 2022). Although it's not a cure for PCOS, LBHR can help in controlling a key symptom: unwanted hair growth.
As someone who has experienced this issue firsthand, and as a dermal clinician who has seen numerous patients benefit from LBHR, I truly feel that this treatment can help empower women by giving them a sense of control over their bodies. I’ve seen women come into the clinic feeling closed off, hesitant, and unsure during their first consultation. But as their treatments progress, something amazing happens—their confidence begins to grow. Session after session, they become more comfortable in their own skin, seeing results and no longer feeling defined by their unwanted hair. It’s truly rewarding to witness that transformation, especially as this is something that hits very close to home.
In saying this, it's important to have a clear understanding of what LBHR can—and cannot—achieve. While LBHR significantly reduces the rate of hair regrowth, it does not address the underlying hormonal imbalances that cause hirsutism in PCOS. PCOS is a chronic hormonal condition, and excess androgens (male hormones) will continue to trigger hair growth even after several laser sessions (Kopera et al., 2010). What LBHR does is target the melanin within the hair follicle, slowing down the process by damaging these follicles, leading to thinner, finer hair that delays the growth process over time (Bhat et al., 2020).
It’s important to note that LBHR typically requires multiple sessions spaced out over several weeks to months, as hair grows in cycles, and laser treatments target hair follicles during their active growth phase (anagen phase). In my experience, patients usually see optimal results after 6 to 8 sessions, but individual responses vary based on factors like skin type, hair texture, and hormonal fluctuations (Bhat et al., 2020). This makes a personalised treatment plan crucial.
One thing I always emphasise to patients is that LBHR isn’t a quick fix, but rather a long-term management tool. Even after completing the initial series of treatments, most women with PCOS will need maintenance sessions to keep hair growth under control. While it can significantly improve quality of life by reducing the need for constant hair removal methods like shaving, waxing, and depilatory creams, LBHR should be viewed as part of a comprehensive approach to managing PCOS—not a stand-alone solution (Sheehan, 2004).
Combining LBHR with treatments that address hormonal imbalances, such as medication (like anti-androgens) or lifestyle changes, ensures the most effective, lasting results (Tan et al., 2024). Think of it as attacking an issue from every angle to ensure the best outcome. In this way, LBHR becomes a cornerstone in a broader PCOS management plan, helping to reduce the emotional and physical toll of hirsutism while maintaining realistic expectations for long-term hair control.
Finding the Right Treatment Path for You
Navigating PCOS requires a holistic approach. From my experiences, having a healthcare provider who understands both the medical and aesthetic aspects of treatment is essential. We spoke earlier about combination therapies, but a similar multidisciplinary approach, including endocrinologists, dermatologists, and even nutritionists, can help us manage our symptoms in the most effective way.
In my own journey, I learned that addressing the root causes of PCOS—rather than just its symptoms—is the key to achieving lasting relief. This isn’t a standalone task and involves lifestyle changes alongside medical treatments tailored to my needs.
In future posts, we’ll explore these topics in more depth, discussing the science behind PCOS, how it affects hair growth specifically, and how we can navigate the challenges many women face while managing this condition. My hope is that by sharing these insights, we can create a supportive community for all of us living with PCOS as a collective.
Thank you for joining me as we unravel the complexities of PCOS and its impact on our lives. Together, let’s empower ourselves and others to take control of our health and well-being.
Until next time, Luciana á„«áĄ

every time i look into what treatment for dermatillomania would look like, half of it is a list of medication groups that I've been on at different points in my life bc of different issues (antidepressants, anti-anxieties, anti-convulsants, anti-psychotics) that never impacted my skin picking and it drives me a little nuts bc i fail to see how these medications are supposed to stop something like excessive and compulsive skin picking. it's also mildly amusing to me how every website tells you to never self diagnose this condition, as if it isn't extremely obvious after 20 years of picking my fingers until they're raw and bleeding with open sores, only to keep picking them even after they're at that point. as if it isn't obvious after my doctor had to put me on a prescription acne cream medication as a young teenager (that i still have to use to this day) bc every time i had a pimple i would pick holes in my face that have left scars to this day. but yeah sure, i need a medical professional to tell me something i already know. and how much would that official diagnosis cost me?
anyways, all this to say I'm tired. I'm tired of this. i have vivid memories of doing this shit to myself as early as preschool. i used to scratch my scalp and the shells of my ears raw so that scabs would form and then I'd pick those. I'd wake up with my hair caked in blood after picking and scratching while falling asleep. one day in 2nd grade i scratched the side of my foot raw and wearing shoes was agony but i was too ashamed to tell anyone, so i let my socks get socked in blood for days. my fingers are always always always bleeding. I'm ashamed to ever get manicures with my mom bc the few times i tried, the nail techs berated me for the state of my hands and made me cry. I've had to spend my whole life with friends and family and even just strangers telling me how much i gross them out, and randomly yelling at me "stop picking!", much to my absolutely mortification and shame. how do you stop something that you've been doing for almost the entirety of your life? it feels so hopeless.

It has been awhile since my last post. Here's an update of my health conditions:
Jan 2023
So...since mid Jan this year, I notice my hair has been falling very excessively. Hairs come out in handfuls when I wash, blow, comb, or simply just by running through my hair.
Feeling worried, I went to seek doctor's advice. He arranged blood tests for full blood count, thyroid, and iron. He also referred me to a dermatologist at National Skin Centre (NSC) where my condition was diagnosed as Alopecia Areata.
Alopecia Areata occurs when our body's own immune cells mistakenly attack the hair follicles. Upon examination, there are 4 bald areas. The dermatologist called for steroid injections in those bald areas and follow-up treatment in a month's time. Steroid injections are used to stimulate hair growth but it does not really stop hair from falling.
On the other hand, my thyroid and iron results are not within the normal range and I'm also having very irregular periods now (2 periods in a month for Nov 2022 and Jan 2023)
Tumblr media
Feb 2023
Hair loss continued and I had my 2nd steroid injection (1.9ml).
Did an ultrasound. The results showed a small uterine fibroid, nabothian cysts in the cervix, and a simple benign right ovarian cyst/follicle.
Thyroid results back to normal but experienced prolonged periods (14 days) - referred to see gynae at Hospital.
Tumblr media
Mar 2023
Hair falls worsened and my 3rd steroid injection is at 2.9ml. Started wearing a hat wherever I went. Also having 2 periods this month.
Tumblr media
Apr 2023
Going to be botak soon. Had my 4th steroid injection at 3ml. I had some indentations on my scalp so the therapist was not able to inject steroids into those areas. The dermatologist said that my hair loss is progressive hence she started me on 15 days oral steroids (20mg of prednisolone for the first 5 days, reduced to 15mg for the next 5 days, and 10mg for the last 5 days). It is supposed to help calm down the immune system. She also gave me Growell 2% Scalp Lotion to be applied to the bald areas twice a day. I will be visiting their hair clinic for my next visit.
As for my gynae visit, she did a transvaginal ultrasound where a 5cm cyst was found on one side of my ovaries. She also ordered 4 blood tests (Luteinizing Hormone, Follicle Stimulating Hormone, Estradiol, and Prolactin Serum). The results came back all within the normal range.
I also started taking birth control pills (Liza). Hope this can help to regulate my periods.
I will need to repeat my ultrasound scan and thyroid test in Jul. Shall share more updates again. Till the next time!

My experience at a dermatology clinic in Dubai highlighted the importance of personalized age-specific care, as skin needs vary significantly across different life stages.
Access to cutting-edge treatments is a significant advantage. Many clinics utilize state-of-the-art equipment for procedures, ensuring safety and efficacy. They also emphasize post-treatment follow-up, which plays a critical role in monitoring progress and making necessary adjustments.

This diversity enhances the expertise available, as dermatologists work with a variety of skin tones and textures. Clinics often feature multilingual staff, making it easier for patients to communicate their needs effectively.
Prominent services at these clinics include aesthetic enhancements, such as anti-aging treatments and scar reduction techniques. Popular options include laser hair removal and microdermabrasion, which rank high among patients seeking immediate results. I found the emphasis on skin rejuvenation particularly appealing, presenting options that can lead to a significant boost in confidence.

Overall, dermatology clinics in Dubai represent a vital resource for skincare. The blend of medical expertise, advanced technology, and personalized service equips individuals to tackle skin issues effectively.
Services Offered
Dermatology clinics in Dubai provide a comprehensive range of services essential for maintaining optimal skin health and enhancing overall appearance.
Skin Treatments
Skin treatments address various conditions, such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, and hyperpigmentation. These clinics utilize advanced diagnostic tools to accurately assess skin conditions and develop personalized treatment plans. For instance, during one of my visits, I experienced the benefits of targeted acne therapy that combined topical treatments with laser interventions. This integrated approach effectively reduced my breakouts and improved my skin texture. Additionally, many clinics focus on preventative care, offering specialized treatments to protect against sun damage and signs of aging. Regular skin evaluations ensure tailored updates to treatments as skin changes over time.
Hair Services
Hair services often encompass scalp assessments, hair restoration therapies, and treatments for conditions like hair loss. Clinics in Dubai might integrate modern techniques, such as PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy, which promotes hair regrowth by stimulating follicles with growth factors extracted from the patient's own blood. I've found that this treatment can be particularly effective for those facing thinning hair. Many clinics also provide specialized solutions for dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis, ensuring that hair health aligns with overall skin wellness.
Cosmetic Procedures
Cosmetic procedures are widely sought after, offering enhancements like anti-aging treatments, chemical peels, and various forms of laser therapy. These procedures help in reducing wrinkles, fine lines, and uneven skin texture. One popular option is non-surgical facelifts, which utilize dermal fillers to restore volume and smooth out deep creases. In my experience, the precision of injection techniques immensely impacts the results, making it crucial to choose a qualified professional. Moreover, skin rejuvenation services, such as microneedling, promote collagen production, enhancing skin elasticity and appearance. Clinics often encourage post-treatment follow-ups to monitor outcomes and adjust care plans as needed.
Choosing the Right Dermatology Clinic
Selecting a dermatology clinic in Dubai involves careful consideration of several key factors, ensuring the best possible care for your skin and overall health.

Prioritizing the credentials and qualifications of dermatologists holds significant weight in decision-making. I always look for board certification, which indicates specialized training and knowledge in dermatology. The presence of advanced degrees and ongoing education also demonstrates a commitment to staying updated with the latest treatments and technologies in the field. In Dubai, many clinics showcase the backgrounds of their practitioners, allowing patients to review their expertise in treating specific skin conditions. This transparency fosters confidence in the care they'll receive.
Patient Reviews and Testimonials
Examining patient reviews and testimonials offers valuable insights into a clinic's reputation and patient satisfaction. I often explore online platforms where patients share their experiences regarding treatment outcomes, professionalism, and service quality. Positive feedback about effective treatments and supportive staff often reflects a clinic's commitment to patient care. Conversely, consistent negative reviews might raise red flags. Reading about others' personal experiences helps me gauge the potential for a similar outcome and reinforces the importance of choosing a clinic that aligns with my skincare needs.
Innovations in Dermatology
Innovative advancements in dermatology play a crucial role in enhancing skin health and treatment outcomes. Clinics in Dubai adopt state-of-the-art technologies and techniques that address various skin concerns effectively.
Latest Technologies
Laser treatments revolutionized dermatological care. I've seen firsthand how laser therapies for acne scars and pigmentation yield remarkable results with minimal downtime. Technologies such as fractional laser and ablative laser treatments provide targeted skin resurfacing, catering to the unique needs of various skin types prevalent in Dubai. Additionally, radiofrequency microneedling combines the benefits of microneedling with radiofrequency energy, promoting collagen production for a firmer, healthier complexion. These cutting-edge devices ensure that I receive precise treatments tailored to my individual skin conditions, enhancing my overall treatment experience.
Treatment Techniques
Numerous advanced treatment techniques indicate the emerging trends in dermatology. I've experienced combination therapies, where dermatologists blend different modalities for optimal results. For instance, the use of chemical peels alongside laser treatments improves skin texture and tone effectively. Furthermore, non-invasive procedures like injectables for wrinkles and dermal fillers provide immediate aesthetic benefits, allowing for a refreshed appearance without significant recovery time.
Another noteworthy aspect is the emphasis on personalized skincare plans. Dermatologists conduct comprehensive assessments, leading to tailored strategies that account for my skin's unique characteristics and concerns. Regular follow-ups ensure continuous monitoring and adjustment of treatments, which enhances the effectiveness of care. As a patient, knowing that my treatment evolves with my skin's needs instills confidence and trust in the process.

Hair Removal 101: Exploring Hair Reduction Methods for Managing Hirsutism
Hello again, and welcome back to Shining Through PCOS! Today we’ll be diving into a topic that many of us with and even without PCOS face—hair removal. We will be exploring traditional methods such as waxing, shaving, as well as laser-based hair reduction, examining their pros and cons to help you make informed choices about what’s right for you in your journey.
Understanding Hair Growth Cycles
Before we delve into specific methods, it’s essential to understand how hair growth cycles work. Hair grows in three phases: the anagen (growth), catagen (transition), and telogen (resting) phases (Natarelli et al., 2023). The anagen phase, which can last for years, is the active growth stage during which the hair shaft forms and emerges from the surface of the skin - and around 85% of the hairs on the human scalp are in this phase at any given time (Kintz et al., 2015, p. 1-22). The catagen phase is a shorter period where the hair stops growing, and its structure becomes fully formed and hardened. The base of the hair, or bulb, begins to shrink and break down, to prepare the hair for shedding. The length of this phase typically varies depending on the type of hair (Kintz et al., 2015, p. 1-22). After the catagen phase comes the telogen, or resting phase, where hair growth pauses, but the hair follicle remains dormant. Around 10-15% of our hairs are in this stage at any given time, and this percentage can increase as we age. During telogen, the hair is more easily shed—a process you’’ hear often referred to as 'shedding.' Shortly after, the cycle restarts, with new growth being triggered by the activation of stem cells in the bulge area of the outer root sheath (Kintz et al., 2015, p. 1-22).
Waxing: A Time-Honoured Technique
Waxing is a popular hair removal method that involves applying warm wax to the skin and quickly pulling it off, removing hair from the root (Kang et al., 2021). One of its main advantages is that it provides longer-lasting results compared to shaving, as it disrupts the hair follicle and can lead to regrowth over time that is much finer. Waxing also acts as a natural exfoliant, removing dead skin cells and leaving your skin feeling smooth.
However, waxing may not be the best option for everyone, particularly those with sensitive skin or certain skin conditions. It can also be painful, especially for those new to the process, and will require regular appointments/ at-home treatments to maintain results (Kang et al., 2021). While waxing is effective, it may not provide the long-term solution that many with PCOS seek.
In fact, I vividly remember my own experience with waxing at 12. And yes, aged 12 (I’m a HAIRY Middle Eastern woman :P) I was eager to try it, but after the session, my skin reacted unexpectedly—blood rushed to the surface, leaving me these dark bruises that were quite painful. It wasn’t actual bleeding, but my skin bruised so badly, and I believe it might have been purpura. The next day at school, I remember how concerned my teachers looked because it looked like I had fallen or been injured. That experience definitely made me rethink waxing as a method, especially for those of us with sensitive skin.
Shaving: Quick and Convenient
Shaving is arguably the most accessible hair removal method since it requires minimal tools and can be easily done at home. It offers a quick way to remove hair from the surface of the skin without the pain that comes with waxing. However, because shaving only cuts the hair at the surface, it doesn’t address the hair follicle itself. As a result, regrowth tends to happen quickly and can feel coarser or stubbly for some individuals.
One of the major drawbacks of shaving is the potential for irritation, ingrown hairs, and cuts, especially for those with sensitive skin. There's also the ongoing debate about whether shaving can make hair grow back thicker. In my opinion, it really varies from person to person. I have known people who shave their faces daily without any issues, while I’ve personally experienced hair growing back thicker and longer in certain areas after shaving.
What I’ve noticed is that many people with finer or lighter hair don’t seem to experience stimulated hair growth after shaving, while those of us with coarser or darker hair, myself included, often deal with thicker, faster regrowth. It’s a frustrating reality that highlights how hair growth patterns can vary depending on individual hair types, textures as well as ethnicity. I’ve also observed that people like myself from cultures typically associated with thicker body and facial hair—like Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and South Asian backgrounds—often face more challenges with stimulated hair growth after shaving. This contrasts with some of my friends from other backgrounds, who tend to have finer hair and don’t experience the same regrowth issues.
All in all, although shaving can be convenient, it usually requires more frequent upkeep compared to waxing or laser treatments. For those of us with PCOS, I’d recommend using shaving mainly for in-between laser sessions rather than as a long-term solution.
Laser-Based Hair Reduction: A Game-Changer for Hirsutism
Now, let’s discuss laser-based hair reduction (LBHR), a method that stands out for its effectiveness in managing excess hair growth, particularly for those of us with PCOS.
One of the key benefits of LBHR is its ability to target dark, coarse hairs—which are often a result of hormonal imbalances—by damaging the hair follicles and delaying future growth (Ibrahimi et al., 2011). For many of us with PCOS, this can offer a sense of relief and a much-needed confidence boost, as it provides long-term results and reduces the frequency of hair removal sessions. I’ve personally found that after multiple treatments, the density and thickness of my hair significantly reduced, making it much more manageable. The general consensus is to recommend 6-8 sessions to see a substantial clearance in hair. Personally, I have found that this takes many more sessions for those of us with PCOS as our hair growth is hormonal which inherently makes it more resistant to hair reduction methods.
Another often overlooked benefit of laser is its potential to improve skin texture and reduce body odour  (Fazel et al., 2020). Coarse hair, particularly in areas like the underarms, can trap sweat and bacteria, leading to stronger body odour. By reducing hair growth, LBHR can help alleviate this issue  (Fazel et al., 2020). Similarly, the appearance of 'chicken skin' or keratosis pilaris—those tiny bumps we see on the skin—can improve, as there’s less hair growth contributing to clogged follicles and texture irregularities (Li et al., 2022).
However, LBHR isn't without its challenges. For one, the process requires a series of sessions over several months, which can be time-consuming and incredibly costly (Marks et al., 2019). Depending on the severity of hirsutism and the individual’s hair type, results can vary. While I, and many of us with PCOS, have experienced a reduction in hair growth, it’s important to understand that LBHR will not permanently remove hair—it reduces it, and hormonal fluctuations can still cause hair regrowth down the line.
Another significant concern is the possibility of paradoxical hypertrichosis, a phenomenon where laser treatment can actually stimulate hair growth in areas that were previously hair-free (Snast et al., 2021). This is especially important to consider when clinics offer full-body laser packages that may seem like a great deal. Treating areas where you don’t have noticeable hair can backfire, as the heat from the laser can activate dormant follicles, causing new hair to grow. Ironically, the only way to manage this growth is through continued laser treatments with higher settings, which can feel frustrating and counterintuitive (Snast et al., 2021).
This is also where the popular complaint, "laser made my hair grow back even worse," often stems from—when treatments aren’t conducted by a qualified professional. If the laser settings aren’t properly calibrated to your specific skin and hair type, it can lead to inconsistent results, including unwanted stimulation of hair growth. Additionally, for those with darker skin tones, extra caution is required, as there’s a higher risk of hyperpigmentation or burns as adverse effects. This underscores the importance of finding a skilled practitioner who can adjust settings and techniques appropriately for your skin type. This is why it’s essential to consult with a knowledgeable clinician who understands the intricacies of PCOS and the unique challenges of treating hirsutism.
While LBHR may not solve everything, it’s one of the most effective tools we currently have in managing the emotional and physical burden of hirsutism. Ultimately, combining laser treatments with lifestyle changes and medical management, if necessary, can make a world of difference.
Finding What Works for You
In summary, while waxing and shaving have their place in hair removal routines, laser-based hair reduction often emerges as the most effective long-term solution for managing hirsutism, especially for those of us dealing with the challenges of PCOS. Each method has its pros and cons, and what works for one person may not work for another and above all else, it’s essential to consider your unique needs, preferences, and skin type when deciding which method to pursue.
In our next post, we’ll explore the technology behind LBHR, how it works, and why it may be a more suitable option to manage the excessive hair growth that all too often accompanies PCOS.
Until next time,

I voted harmless, just because the act of having/growing long hair doesn't have any negative effects on anyone, male or female. I personally have long hair (tailbone length) and it is pretty practical for my lifestyle, though that's mainly because i don't work a physical job; I can just braid it and then it's styled for the next 3 days. I'm not going to pretend I'm free of vanity, I find it incredibly rewarding to watch my hair grow, kind of in the same way of watching a plant grow. I would consider this still harmless, since (at least with my approach to it) it doesn't come at any cost in another area of my life; I don't spend extra time or energy on it like I'd do with shaving, or limit myself by having to constantly keeping an eye out for it throughout the day like I'd have to do with makeup. I could even argue that it frees me in some ways since I don't care about it getting greasy and won't wash it more often just because of that, but denying that there is some patriarchy induced bias towards keeping long hair would just be dishonest. Now the obsession with hair as an extension of beauty culture is quite different. Putting the discussion about whether hair is a part of your body worth protecting because you can't feel pain in it aside, most hair treatments are damaging. Straightening, blow drying, the shampoo conditioner cycle (if you feel the need to condition your hair, please look into this), dying and bleaching (which comes with its own package of aryan supremacy subtext) or keratin treatments are all inevitably damaging your hair to make it more appealing. Even washing your hair as soon as if not before it's greasy is done out of a need to look put together and it's the opposite of healthy. Even if you don't consider all these worth considering because hair is just cell waste and it will grow back (fair enough), these habits still damage the skin on your scalp and, since most people don't wash only their hair over the sink, it has the same effect on the skin on your face and back. Beyond that, keeping your hair for looks comes with the same drawbacks as most beauty rituals, such as increased awareness and self regulation, comparison with others etc.
This is already too long of an response to basically say "The societal standard of long hair for women is harmful and the ways to achieve the look are damaging, and often counterproductive for actually growing long hair", so to make it even longer, I'll just mention some of my gripes with the long hair community.
I like a lot of what goes on in the "how do i grow long healthy hair" cycle if you put the vanity of it aside. Common advice about how you should wash your hair less often, "embrace" the greasiness, putting oil in your hair AND LEAVING IT THERE aswell as focusing on the health of your scalp are all accepted and practised even though they leave you with what is considered dirty looking hair and I think that's great. Now I hate the mythologisation of women having long hair, how it's some spiritual practise or gets treated as such always comes with its own wave of sex seperatism that just isn't necessary. I also don't like the obsession with the hair of women of earlier times without any context on why and how it was more a sign of patriachal oppression than a free choice to grow it. Overall I hate the convolution of "do this for your hair to make it healthy" and "do this for your hair to make it look good" since those usually don't go well together.
