okay so there's a lot of things that stick out about Midnight but here's just one

when Cinder first gets to the Glass Unicorn, the shock collar is already there waiting on the counter—

—so Cinder was always going to end up with it one way or another, no matter what she did

(and who knows if it was bought new? maybe she wasn't the first child slave this hotel has seen; all three Tremaines act like this is business as usual when they meet Cinder)

but Madame doesn’t put it on her right away, just gives her a list of chores and leaves the room

now, from a Doylist perspective, I'm pretty sure it's to save time that we don't see Cinder actually having the collar put on her; they had a whole lot of shit to cram into just a few minutes and that would have been unnecessary. but, from a Watsonian perspective: why?

consider: Cinder literally just got here. she has no idea where anything is or how to do anything that's being demanded of her: cleaning up around a stable is a whole different ball game than being charged with the upkeep of an entire, enormous hotel at ten years old, maybe even younger depending on how much time passed between when she was first "adopted" and when she met Rhodes

there's no way she did everything perfectly, or even right, that first try (and of course her stepsisters weren't any help)

she's being immediately set up to fail, and more importantly, to be punished, to be shown exactly what her captors will do to her when they find her lacking

so: did Cinder have the shock collar put on her the first time she made a mistake, and have it framed as her own fault?

update to the lost Flash prototype version of Fruit Ninja

so a long time ago, i made a post talking about this version of Fruit Ninja i discovered and later found out to be lost media. it's the original prototype version of the game, and it was available to play on the old Fruit Ninja Anniversary website from 2017 onward. Luke Muscat talked about it in his video 'How I Designed Fruit Ninja', and he shows footage of it at 4:41 seconds. in the original post i made about the site, i found an archive from 2021, tried to fetch the file from the site, got hit with a CORS policy error and found out that the place the network was trying to fetch the file from was turning up with a 404. yesterday and today, i've been trying to work around the CORS policy error by disabling web security on my browser, but i've turned up with absolutely no luck.

for those unaware, a CORS policy (or Cross Origin Resource Sharing policy) is basically a something that allows or disallows a browser to access an asset from a domain that differs from the original domain. there's a website on Mozilla that explains this better than i could, but the way i understand it is that if your browser tries to make a request to fetch something that's hosted on a website but originates from another domain (say, a file sharing website), its regulated by the CORS policy to make sure the site you're fetching this information from is secure. if it's allowed, the content loads normally. if it isn't, the request to fetch that content is ignored (at least i think that's how it works). this, along with the 404, was what was stopping me from being able to fetch the swf from the site.

so, here's the main update: i can't find it. i've tried everything i know how to. disabling web security lead to the discovery that the swf itself was hosted on a separate URL from the main Fruit Ninja Anniversary website that apparently wasn't archived on the IA, and it was also being stopped by the CORS policy. punching that URL into the Wayback Machine turns up with a snapshot from 2022 that's just a 404, and since the Wayback Machine works by fetching every available snapshot of that URL it has in its library to load the content, it's always fetching that specific snapshot, and that's why it can't load the. no matter what archive of the Anniversary page i use, it's gone. it's lost-lost. i've even checked the self-hosted version of the Fruit Ninja Anniversary website on seanockert.com, but it's not there either. the only real options i have are scraping through every single Flash game archive i can find and hoping that someone saved it (which is a very low possibility), or to ask the original developer if they can send a copy my way (and even then, that option is an absolute last resort if nothing else works). i am pretty desperate at this point to find this thing and i'll look through everything i can to try to find it.

also, just to clear some extra stuff up: none of the Fruit Ninja games on Flashpoint are the prototype. none of them were made in Flash and they don't match up with the prototype. it was my first place to look and it unfortunately isn't there. additionally, the name of the swf file hosted on the Fruit Ninja Anniversary site is 'FruitNinjaHBF2010.swf'. searching this on the IA didn't bring up any results, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's not on there in some way. i'm really hoping this'll turn up again and that it's stashed away on the internet somewhere.

Potionomics thoughts below but specifically regarding Robin because my heart kinda hurts for him now after finishing the game. Spoilers for the ending of the game incase anyone has become genuinely interested from all my yapping.

I can't stop thinking about the fact that not only is his lizard pet Maven, but also that she's been mind-controlling him since he was a little kid and has "rarely ever let go". Like the game reminds you constantly that he wasn't even a squire when he experience that battle, he was just a young kid taken along with the heroes who fought Maven. She latched onto this little kid and then took full control of him, using him as her mask so that she could work towards regaining her powers, taking advantage of Robin's unfortunate circumstances in order to milk the sympathy of the people of Rafta. When Robin mumbles during his last appearance, he acts like a kid, and Maven shushes him and tells him "We'll get ice cream on the way home". He's literally rubbing his eyes with his hand like a tired child. Physically Robin is in his 20s I'd say, but Maven has had a hold of his consciousness for so long that he has very likely been unable to ACTUALLY develop. Mentally, he's probably no older than 9 at the most if I'm judging his implied age correctly. He definitely couldn't be older than 10. This game did really well with its story because this whole time I thought he was your typical manipulative jerk twist villain, but in reality he wasn't even conscious for the entirety of the plot up until the ending. That was all Maven. And it's been this way since he first met her after she'd been turned into the lizard back when he was much younger.

Nobody knows who Maven truly is because she wiped everyone's memories to try and win the contest. She has to keep up this charade in the public eye because dropping it and revealing herself would genuinely wield insane consequences, there's no way to pawn it off unless someone could pull the same mind-altering magic she did. Robin likely will never get the chance to properly develop mentally in the scope of canon, not to the point that Maven has everyone believing he has. He's literally just a child. It's not like oh she's only kept it up in public and let him have his body back in private, she outright states she's kept a solid grasp on him, she's fucked him over and there's no real chance of fixing it because nobody is truly as powerful as her in the current moment.

In short I just feel so bad for him and I want to write a universe where maybe Maven's spell backfires and everyone remembers who she is anyway. I want a universe where she's taken from him and rightfully punished, a universe where Robin is rescued from her hold and taken under the wing of someone who can actually handle his needs and help him grow. Perhaps Saffron, she's implied to be pretty old and she's also just very capable, she also lives in the quiet woods which makes for a very stress-free environment. Not to mention she has a lot of good solid advice to give out. Robin deserves love and safety after everything he's been through. He's probably only ever known Maven's presence in the few times he got his body back over such a long period of time, Robin deserves so much better, and I cannot stand the idea of Maven just continuing to be his guardian/puppet him. That's not the fate he should receive.
