people love an "i'll take care of you" "it's rotten work" "not to me, not if it's you" character dynamic until the character who needs to be taken care of is disabled. then it's supposedly fucked up and toxic for a person to have to take care of someone else.

It's competitive but I think my favorite Conan anecdote is when he told his therapist "Everyone hates me, they think I have no talent and they wish I would just go away," and his therapist said "That's called negative self-talk and you have to realize it's just the depression talking" and Conan said "Self-talk? I'm just quoting my latest review!"
#I know this sounds like a joke and it is but apparently it also really happened#Conan was telling his therapist he felt like everyone hated him and his therapist was trying to convince him it was all in his head#and he was like everything I just said was a direct quote from a review#this was at his lowpoint when he was like a hair's breadth from getting fired and the press was absolutely eating him alive#gotta respect a guy who's forced to eat shit on national TV and gets absolutely humiliated and ground into the dirt by someone he trusted-#-and he doesn't even bitch about it he just gets right back up and gets a new show and becomes even funnier#like he fully understood that his legacy wasn't about being liked it was about a) treating people right and b) being the funniest man alive#and he did both of those things and continues to do both of those things so I think he's going to be fine#or as he put it “I've been up and I've been down but I have a certain skillset and I'd like to be of use for as long as its viable”#I think he's letting go of acclaim at this point... or that's the impression I got from the nyt piece#not that he's not grateful but he no longer sees it as an objective or even an accomplishment to be loved and acclaimed#it's more about the act of creation and the creative output itself bc that's the part that continues to matter thirty years later#conan o'brien

I think everyone wants to own a complete works of Shakespeare and I want to get everyone a complete works of Shakespeare that is right for them
#as long as it's not one of those dime a dozen copies w squished text and no notes 🖤#b&n book annex don't interact. canterbury classics don't interact#i have a friend that i went antiquing w recently who got a decameron illustrated by rockwell kent#and their birthday is coming up and my toxic trait is that i wanna get them the complete works illustrated by rockwell kent#even though im not sure that's the most readable copy for a 21st century reader to begin with#i havent actually read a play in one of those admittedly. i know they have the cambridge notes in the back of the book#but that's a lot more work than having it at the bottom or side of the page#idk if they'd be down for that much flipping tbh. i know flipping isn't my favorite#especially in a big book#and idk if the cambridge notes would even be that approachable for them? idk the annotation style#tales from diana#ive been trying to get a taste for more editions of shakespeare lately and mostly that's just been within copies of individual plays#and i feel like this is a journey i kinda started too late#like i read titus andronicus in a folger edition which probably wouldve been gamechanging to me in 2018#but as a reader w years more experience it was just kinda giving me more than i needed. i found it excessive#versus when i was a beginner i often felt lost even w the notes in my riverside shakespeare#i felt like it was still above my reading level (and it was) especially when it would reference things i was barely familiar with#whereas in 2024 it's like my riverside is my baby. and but for its large unwieldiness and perilous condition. i could read from it forever#i read not a shakespeare play in an arden edition recently but philaster by beaumont and fletcher. same editing team though#i thought the notes were sometimes a little excessive but they certainly weren't kinda basic like folger's#i thought at times maybe they could split it up w some of those historic or cultural commentary sort of notes#like those were what i would rather flip to the back to read later. as opposed to taking up like half the page#oxford english classics kinda does that too but w their longer annotations i think flipping to the back makes sense#bc arden somewhat is flooding the white space abd straining my eyes. even though other than format it's very similar editing#i like my rsc complete works and what ive read of the individual plays a lot but there's just one thing about the complete works#that i have a qualm with. i respect that they have a single column for the text#as opposed to two-column... i understand for some it scans better and helps w comprehension#i wish the notes on the bottom were in two columns though. bc the way they run on w such a wide margin#i genuinely lose my place a lot. in the small text. kinda hate that part of the reading experience#and when there's lines of prose it can also be harder to scan

Dead#or#E. all of the above#if yall pursue it and don’t recognize the realities behind that lifestyle#that being said may e the artist is from a more circumpolar location than I#and the summers truly aren’t as bad#but judging from how they put ginormous pine trees over a bustling flower garden#I have a feeling it’s an aesthetic wish and not from experience#many flowers often need part time shelter from the sun#but trust me pine trees that large will make it straight up *dark*#also imo plant farming is harder#at least animals can let you know when something is wrong#but thats an opinion

while the only redeeming quality of love god really is the stan joke, it does emphasize how bad mabel is at matchmaking and also how much romance sucks actually

it feels a little silly to be so happy about something that, currently, just amounts to some free dance classes but I really, genuinely am just so joyful about getting this traineeship
#like#tbh it turns out i don't actually care that much about getting paid#when i a) have a solid full time job#and b) now can save like $54-60/week#(and also am being paid double that by the same org to teach?)#and most importantly get to dance and grow#idk i think i have had so many times in my life#where i've either seen the limit of dance in my life or hit it#from doctors telling me i couldn't dance anymore to the y'know#general crushing weight of Growing Up and Getting a Real Job#and now i'm not like. a Full Time Contracted Company Dancer the way i dreamed#but i'm part of the company and get to keep growing and learning and dancing#AND i get to have all the rest of my multifaceted life along with it#like shit dude#there was never a point in my life where i thought i could have all of this#a job that (while sometimes frustrating and stressful) lets me work on cool things that matter to me#and pays enough i can do all the things i love#and dancing ~professionally with people i rlly like and respect#and the art! and the music!#and the friends! and life in a city i've loved since i was 10 years old#i am feeling very grateful and joyful and also a little bit overwhelmed#personal

Ok bit of a hot take but I don't think gettin nothin but praise from friends is a very healthy thing, at least for me. Puts me in the mindset that I must always strive to do good to get the respect of my peers. Could be cool for ppl to slip in a little critique with their remarks, as a treat. Shows that they still love me even when I'm flawed, and also shows that they're taking me / my work seriously enough to give feedback, if that makes sense.
#I directly asked for critique once during GNC Contained b/c I could tell there was something I'm not quite doing right but#No one was really pointing out anything bad#So the feedback I got genuinely helped me improve and I made like. One of my favorite entries with that lmao#Also don't spin this as saying you should ONLY critique. "Prince of Egypt" is one of those movies the internet has decided that you're not allowed to hate.
Too bad I do!
#i gave this movie so many chances#and every time around the 10th plague I throw my popcorn at the screen and give up#Act 1 makes a big hairy deal about how awful the murder of children was#then our “good guys” do the same thing in Act 3 and nobody says jack or shit#we just breeze on past it#just one scene where Moses was like “WTF GOD?! This wasn't part of the deal!” would have saved it but they didn't do that#don't give me that “they wanted to be respectful to the source material” crap#A. If you were raised nonreligious like I was you would agree that Exodus is just a badly written story (with no historical basis btw)#and B. I'm pretty sure in the source material RAMSES DROWNED!#Why would you change that???#I like Stephen Schwartz but the music in this is just a snore too#the animation is beautiful but the tone is all over the place and the jokes are cringe#i just don't fucking like this movie#I just really don't fucking like this movie#if there ever was a “so good it's bad” movie this would be my pick#in that the quality of the animation distracts people from how fundamentally broken the plot and morality is#no really name one other movie where the hero does the same evil thing he denounced the villain for doing#and the movie doesn't even take a breather to point out the hero's hypocrisy#also I don't know I just don't think “god will kill you for what your parents did” is a good thing to put in a movie FOR CHILDREN#your religion has melted your brains and this movie sucks

#It is so ridiculous that this kid has FIVE parental figures and I'm the only one who's actually a good 'parent' to them#One other of the parental figures I've spent a few YEARS brute-forcing into being better at it and have to constantly keep doing so#And one of the other ones is just selfish and oblivious and overbearing and kind of useless and more like a kid than a parent#And the last 2 are actively abusive and just fucking terrible people who make the kids' life - and my life for that matter - a nightmare#How am I the only one who is any good at this??#I have no training or experience except a) being very good at loving cats and b) being raised in a horrible nightmarish abusive home#So I'm basically doing what MY family should have done for ME#And it's not fair bc I'm fighting the others every fucking step of the way just to TRY to make this kid's life less miserable than mine was#Like it is such a battle#And it is like a revolutionary unheard-of never-occurred-to-them concept for me to say 'Have you asked [kid] what they want?'#Bc they all automatically go for power struggles and selfishness and treating the kid like a possession#And it's only the one other 'parent' who will even fucking listen to me!#Like it took me a year just to reach the point where this kid trusted me enough to say 'no thanks' about anything#And w/ the parent who sometimes listens to me - the most constant freaking thing I do is ask 'Why?' bc they usually have no actual REASON#No legitimate reason for this rule they've decided or thing they've refused or anything! Just limiting the kid's life bc of how THEY feel#But also like if the kid says something would make a situation worse or better or whatever I freaking listen to them#Bc they have greater insight into the situation bc it's their freaking life and their experiences!#And when they want to spend literal hours describing their new video game I listen and inquire and comment on the cool parts!#And I don't give them 'orders' or anything bc what they have lost the most in this shitty situation is the right to have ANY agency#I always ask before I do things even just opening a drawer to look for a concealer they borrowed bc it's essential to respect their privacy#Bc they don't GET any from anybody else!!!!!#I literally have had to have so many arguments with the other half-decent parent just to get them to stop going through their stuff!#And again the other 3 people are frankly fucking terrible#Actively negative#Two of them actively evil#And yes I've tried to get authorities involved many times but they fucking refuse to do anything I've tried over and over and OVER#So I'm parenting this kid bc holy shit no one else is any good at it#And I'm so angry and tired and upset and I love them so much and can't fix this other shit for them#And I'm so flabbergasted that out of 5 ppl I'm it: the only decent parent#It's not fair to this kid
