I'm sorry but I have made this post multiple times before and I cannot put it in any smaller words: 

If you expected the ARMY OF GENOCIDE MACHINES FROM DARK SPACE to have a rational and coherent motivation, you may just be bad at narrative comprehension.

The answer to their question was “cyclical genocide”. There is no logic that can make that make sense. It is, genuinely, perfect that at the end of the day the Reapers’ motivations are stupid and deranged. 

They are a broken AI modelled off the broken logic of a megalomaniacal group of eldritch abominations who are, to this day, even after seeing the horror they wrought, incapable of even comprehending the idea that they might have made a mistake--incapable of comprehending the idea that the “lesser races” might have any value, anything to contribute, any worth, any right to not be subjected to this. The Reapers say they’re “beyond our mere mortal comprehension” because they think they’re gods, because their creators thought they were gods.

The logic shouldn’t track. It shouldn’t make sense. And that is not only sensible and narratively coherent, it’s extremely realistic. Surely, surely especially now, seeing what actual AIs do, the things they think are logical, surely you can see this.

The Reapers are the galactic-scale equivalent of an AI art generator that’s told to make a pastoral scene with sheep, and instead doubles down on making increasingly photorealistic oranges because it thinks those are the same thing, except in this metaphor ChatGPT has guns. That’s good writing. That’s the horror of it. They cannot be reasoned with because they are, genuinely, beyond anyone’s comprehension--because their reasoning is utterly divorced from reality.

(The breakdown from a writing standpoint comes with the way the narrative fails to point this out--the way the final choice, even with the extended cut, presents Synthesis as somehow both morally pure (instead of a horrifying violation of literally everyone’s agency) and existentially necessary--not just a way of saving everyone by exploiting the Reapers’ algorithm (which I would accept 100% if it was a purely strategic, this-is-guaranteed-to-work-with-no-casualties option) but as somehow ‘the way to end the cycle’, when you’ve already shown through gameplay that the cycle can be broken through compassion alone.)

But the issue there is in the narrative framing at zero-hour, not--jesus fucking christ, people-- not the fact that the Reapers’ logic is bad. Do you hear yourselves?! Do you understand what you’re implying--that there is in ANY way, ever, a motivation that would make this “make sense”?

The Reapers’ logic was always going to be bad, was meant to be bad, NEEDED to be bad, because no good logic, no sensible motivation, will lead you to fucking genocide.

There are several Polizei Berlin stations like the Abschnitt, but everyone tied to this supernatural symphony ends up near this Spandau station particularly.

Sören Heinrich -- ( boar | tag | bio ) The black sheep of the Abschnitt. Sören’s abrasive nature keeps his co-workers at bay, a division widened by their western ideals clashing with his East German upbringing. He distances himself from the station through tight focus on his job, always the first to arrive at a crime scene. Don Jae Hale -- ( elk | tag | bio ) The silver-tongued Kriminalhauptkommissar of the Abschnitt. Hale is quick to dismiss the killings up until his leadership comes under siege by the paranoid public. Umeya Romanova -- ( fox | tag | bio ) The Bundeskriminalamt detective sent to assist with the Abschnitt’s mounting cases. Rumor says Umeya is there for more than the mystery, but her motives veiled by a callous attitude. Marieke Reiss -- ( rabbit | tag | bio ) The star psychology student barely escaped a killing. Now a key witness, Marieke can’t rest easy knowing she could be the next victim, driving her to take matters into her own hands. Reinhardt Müller -- ( donkey | tag | bio ) The Abschnitt’s disgraced ace detective, worn down and living in the grimy corners of Berlin. Skizz Week 2, Day 1: Calm/Chaos!

I never posted anything for Skizz Week 1 (never even knew it existed then tbh), but when I saw @skizzlemanweek's post with the prompts, I knew I had to write a little something to share the joy this man generates for me with y'all!

So I've decided to use this week to make little So Much For Stardust drabbles that might be canon, might be AU, who knows! (Me, I know but details lol)

For those unaware or new to me, So Much For Stardust is a fic that I am writing where Skizz is a human that has been abducted from Earth and essentially tortured for a number of years. After being rescued from his abductors, he was placed into the care of the local outpost of the Sapience Outreach Specialists (SOS): Doctor Zedaph Pleighs (a sheep-like Fulgar Ovium), Mr. ImpulseSV (a demonic looking Inferni), and Doctor Tango of Clan Tek (a bouncy, fiery Ignis Petra). Their task is now to assess Skizz's sapience level and, if he proves to be on a level equal to the ZIT boys, start teaching him Galactic and all about various alien customs/cultures.

So let's get this Skizzleman Week 2 started with a little drabble about Stardust Skizz and the Calm that comes with stargazing...

People tend to be surprised when Skizz says that he likes to go stargazing.

They take in his punk rocker aesthetic, his history doing drumline for school that grew to using a full drum kit, his busy noisy family, and they're confused.

Why would he like stargazing? Isn't it too quiet and boring to him? Doesn't he think that the vastness of space is terrifying?

And they do have valid points.

But Skizz has always been a watchful sort of person.

Kinda had to be when his biological contributers were dicks that invited awful people over to their house all the time. Kinda had to be when he had been tossed into foster care and developed a reputation for being a problem kid for not standing down when people needed help. Kinda had to be when he was helping his dads figure out how to tell when his younger siblings needed help.

So he turned those watching skills to the stars.

It was... humbling.

To be in the middle of the desert at night with a vast, uncountable number of stars overhead, reminding him that he was small and maybe he didn't mean much in the long run but he was here right here right now being awed by the Milky Way swirling overhead.

The only sounds around him are the distant sounds of animals roaming the desert, the wind whistling over the sands and rattling the few plants, and the slow steady beating of his heart.

He truly feels at peace in those moments of calm that he rarely could find any other way.

It's honestly the cruelest thing that the aliens that had abducted him, the Defectors as Tango had said they called the assholes, could ever have done to him.

To forever destroy the calm and peace that the stars gave him...

There's just three weeks until Marxolor Week '24! A celebration of our favorite trickster duo in whatever form you love them best!

Have you seen our [Prompt] list? (You can find [Rules] here!)

Have you read it but you're still struggling to come up with something? If so, then read below as I go over the prompts and throw some ideas out to help stoke the fires of your imagination!!

Day 1: "Conflict" or "Meeting." 

We love 'em because they've got so much in common, but these two can't be in perfect sync all the time. For those times when they aren't, there's "Conflict." (Or maybe, it's someone else they're in conflict with? Do these two make a good team in a fight?)

"Meeting" could be anything from how they met the first time to the duo meeting up to plan for their next scheme! Or maybe, they're meeting up for something more private and personal...? /SFW

Day 2: "Curiosity" or "Mirrored"

What was it that initially drew the two of them to each other? What catches their interest? Have they learned something new about themselves? Or their world? ...Maybe the reason why they stick together is the "Curiosity" to everyone around them!

With all those similarities, Marx and Magolor's stories are mirror images in many ways. Even their bodies feel like they're "Mirrored" Or you could use this prompt to jump into the Mirror World and see how they are there, or how they'd react to meeting each other! (Or even draw them making silly faces at a funhouse mirror!)

Day 3: "Cunning" or "Magic"

Marx and Magolor each specialize in their own brand of "Cunning." Outright lies for Magolor; deceptive withholding of the truth for Marx. Will they use these against each other...or team up? Cunning can be about deceptively innocent and cute looks too. Perhaps you'll want to explore these borb-shaped wolves in sheep's clothing?

A wizard and a magician! You could use them to talk about "Magic" theory. Or explore what each one can do that the other can't? (Are they jealous?) Or...is it like magic when they look into each other's eyes? Maybe Magolor helps Marx with a magic show?

Day 4: "Clockwork" or "Majesty"

There's that darn clockwork star again! Has Marx told Magolor the story of Galactic Nova? What if he takes him there on a trip? Has wishing on a Nova affected Marx in a way Magolor can tell? ...Or maybe, something in their daily routine happens like "Clockwork."

"Majesty" brings to mind kings and their crowns and Magolor surely has something to say about that messy business! Does Marx have something to say too? Speaking of Marx, if Magolor was going to be a king, you can't forget the existence of the court's jester!

Day 5: "Control" and "Mischief"

The song is no longer known as "Under My Control" but this word's relevant! Do they have full "Control" over their powers? Can they control their feelings for each other? Can Magolor control his evil laughter? Can Marx control himself in general? (They could be holding a pair of game controllers or fighting for a remote control!)

Let's face it! When do these two NOT get up to "Mischief"? Now, do they have different views on what's fair play in the prank game? Maybe you'll want to explore what their best victory against their chosen target was? ...What was their most humiliating defeat?

Day 6: "Chaos" and "Melancholy"

"Chaos" is a step up from mischief and tends to cause more problems for everyone involved; it has greater lasting effects too... Has their bond ever brought TOO much chaos? ...Or maybe Magolor lets Marx stay on the Lor and it turns into complete chaos?

Both have suffered game-ending defeats and with those come deep scars. What are they like when "Melancholy" strikes? Maybe their relationship has taken a melancholic turn? Could they be going through a rough patch or realizing for the first time there might be more to their relationship and don't want things to change?

Day 7: "Comfort" or "Merry"

When are they most comfortable together? Do the two have a favorite comfort spot to go to? Do they maybe hug (or punch!) a plushie of each other when in a bad mood? Maybe one has a surefire recipe to "Comfort" the other in sad times?

The major key compliment to comfort's minor key is "Merry!" What gets them laughing so hard they can't stop? What's a favorite event or landmark in their life they'll never forget? Or you could throw Marx into Merry Magoland with Magolor and see what happens!

The wall disappeared.

fWhip isn't exactly sure when it disappeared, he thinks he might have dozed off, tucked in among the scattered blocks and between the gravestones of his friends.

But at some point the wall disappeared and the rain cleared and fWhip woke up to sunshine and blue skies in an empty world.

A few of the animals are still wandering around. One of Sausage's blood sheep is off in the distant trees and the chickens seem altogether unbothered by recent events. Mooshy is peacefully gracing off towards the Winchester. fWhip just stands there, wet jacket, wet pants, wet shoes, and, worst of all, wet socks, and stares up at the messy, frantic stacks of blocks made by a bunch of players like rats in a trap. Fish in a barrel.

The tombstones around him pulse, the purple beacon-like light shooting off into the air, before it fades away again.

Katherine's stone-carved face stares judgily back at him.

Spawn is a mess.

He starts with Kathrine's dirt shelter at the opening of the spawn courtyard. It's easy to take down. Then he gets to work. It takes a few hours, chipping away at the different materials placed in a panic.

He clears up his own pillar of diamond blocks, and Scott's stone one beside it. Mog's gravestone watches.

Dirt and wool and diamond ore and iron blocks and the mis-matched contents of a near-dozen inventories.

Eventually, finally, it is done. The only things left are the shattered remains of the floating obelisk that had been there since they first set foot on the server and the silent witnesses. Shubble and Katherine and Eloise and Owen and Pix on the ground, Mog's so high he can barely see it and, somewhere above it all, out of sight, Scott.

Scott who had looked him in the eyes and flown up into the storm rather than stay.

He wanders back towards the Winchester, walking under Sausage's tombstone and refusing to look towards Oli's. He gives Mooshy a pet on the nose as the passes and trudges up the stairs. Shubble's charged creeper head is still on the noteblock inside.

He sits on the porch.

The sun sinks, and sets, and rises, and still he sits.

It's almost midday when he hears the sound of rockets overhead.

It's not curiosity that drives him to his feet, its something much more numb than that.

They're at spawn, the person who flew in. He can hear them talking to themself before he makes it to the top of the stairs.

One more step and he's able to see.

"fWhip!" Joey bounces away from the graves and towards him. "Everyone else is dead, we won!"

He throws an arm over fWhip's shoulder, beaming directly in his face. fWhip squints back.

"It's just you and me, together forever!"

Joey chatters on, listing plans for ways to remember everyone and about how at least nothing was damaged and fWhip peers up at the sky, towards where he knows Scott's gravestone is.

Eventually, Joey notices his silence and pulls back just a little to look at him. "Are you okay?"

fWhip doesn't say anything. He can barely hear Joey over the roar in his ears anyway.

"fWhip, are you okay? What happened?"

His fingers wrap around something. Cold and familiar.

"fWhip, you're scaring me-"

A choke. A gasp. A gurgle.

fWhip lets go of his sword hilt and back up as Joey slumps over on top of Pix's gravestone for a second before vanishing completely, replaced by yet another monument.

He looks up at the shattered obelisk and somehow, despite the bright light of day, the galactic runes seem reflected in his eyes.

If there was anyone there to see them.

Worldbuilding: Where Do You Want?

If you had a fresh new Earthlike planet to claim, what part of it would you want, and why?

As someone with multiple food allergies and a love of fresh fruit, I’d want the bits that gave me a maximum chance of things I like to eat. So - hopefully a good north to south expanse, allowing for foods from the tropical to the not-so-much.

On an ocean or river of both for fish and other seafood, especially if we can import kelp and seaweed to grow, or take advantage of a local equivalent. Near some kind of pasturage for meat; though in a pinch there’s at least one breed of sheep that can live on seawrack with little or no grazing. Deserts, dry inland areas, and frozen tundras are not my thing. Too hot, too cold, too dry. I like air that if it’s hot you can chew it, or cut it with a knife.

There’s a second reason you’d want places to grow food. Presume your colony is still in touch with the rest of the galaxy. What are you going to trade?

Keep in mind that whatever it is, it has to be worth shipping out of a gravity well. That narrows the options. Gold, diamonds, platinum? All stuff you can mine out of asteroids and not have to lift from a well. A new colony probably also won’t have a factory set up for, say precision parts not easy to get elsewhere in the galaxy. Those would likely also be more profitably made in orbital colonies and asteroid belts.

What your planet will have? Specialty organic products.

Seriously, look up terroir, and all the snits wine and whisky makers get into trying to get exactly the right results from grain, grapes, soil, and weather. High class chefs will swear by fruit from this orchard, tomatoes from that valley, fish caught off one particular coast.

In a huge galaxy, life is rare. The products of life, even more so. Amber, coral, pearls; silk, cashmere, byssal threads. All of these we can simulate, but there will always be people who want the real thing.

Want it enough to get it transported across the galaxy? Absolutely. What do you think wealth and power is for?

Pick your planetary settlements appropriately. And keep a watchful eye on galactic trends. Sometimes people try to corner the market the old-fashioned way. You know; bribery, violence, lawyers.

And that can give you all kinds of interesting plots....
