I dropped my bassoon so hard onto my toe that I ended up going to the ER to make sure it wasn't broken (it's not as far as they can tell) just let this be proof not to trust me with anything in which I could damage myself.

[story time! this is gonna be a long one, so strap in, ahaha

so, i went to college for music (education and performance; flute performance, specifically. i can wipe my ass w that degree now tho lol), so i was in a couple different ensembles at any given time. in 2013, we were playing a multi-movement piece called "3 Ayres from Gloucester" by Hugh Stuart. the 3rd movement is called "The Fiefs of Wembley." you can listen to a performance of it here. wembley is apparently a location within london. think "wembley stadium!"

i always joked with my fellow flutist friend (we'll call her M) who i shared a stand with that Wembley sounded like the name of a mischievous cat. "wembley get off the counter!!!" "UGH NO why always on the carpet, wembley?!" etc. it helped that the tune itself totally sounds like the theme song of a somewhat skittish yet naughty little cat, parading around causing chaos until he's spotted, then darting away.

on october 3rd, 2013, i came into rehearsal and find M looking pretty distraught. i ask whats up, and shes like "i think i saw a kitten in the middle of the club lawn, it was just laying there, maybe its hurt, idk what to do!" im like okay lets check it out together, and our conductor (huge sweetheart) gives us the okay to go investigate.

sure enough, theres a tiny black blob just laying there in the middle of the lawn; not hidden away in the bushes where a mama cat wouldve left him. as we approached, the blob got up and awkwardly darted away towards the lil decorative pine shrubs dividing the lawn from a small parking lot. we followed it, and there he was: a small black kitten, crouched in terror, hiding in the shelter of the shrubbery.

i dont remember when exactly it happened, but it suddenly dawned on me. i turned to my friend. "M... its WEMBLEY..."

we tried to coax him out to no avail- not even food would persuade him, and he looked very thin- and he was a bit too close to the road for our comfort, so i asked my roommate to keep an eye on the lil guy while M and i went back to rehearsal. after it ended, we recruited a small gaggle of band geeks to capture the kitten. it was the bassoon player who finally caught him, plucking him out of a miniature shrub he'd tried to climb.

i swaddled wembley up in a black bandana i kept in my back pocket (for the Fashion™️), hopped into my roommate's car with my stuff, and headed back with my roommate to our little on-campus apartment. as i stood in the living room, waiting for him to bring our stuff from the car, wembley began to purr in my arms :,)

(to be fair, cats may purr to self-soothe when theyre stressed; its not exclusively an indicator of pleasure. but. Still, lol.)

turns out lil wembley was only a month old: just old enough for solid food, thankfully, but much younger than the age at which kittens are generally separated from their mothers for adoption, which generally occurs after 3 months. he also had a sprained leg, which made walking very difficult and painful for him. the leg was likely the reason he was abandoned by his feral mother, as if he couldnt keep up, she couldnt afford to stop for him when she likely had a whole litter to care for. understandable, but her loss was my (and wembley's!) gain. 💚

i had to tame him, as he was feral, and EXTREMELY fearful of humans, but i spent hours that night sitting on the opposite side of the bathroom, slowly earning his trust until, little by little, i was able to scoot close enough to him to pet him. he'd obviously never been petted before; the look on his little face was pure magic. he completely opened up to me after that moment.

i totally had myself fooled, thinking id find a home for him once his leg was all healed up (my vet major pal showed me how to make him a splint), but... then he started sleeping with me and... well..... yeah. nope. he was my son, and i was his dadmom.

and i always will be. 💚

And my friend Parker, it was so cute to see that when Parker left he said “bye, love you guys!” And my boyfriend said “love you too..” (of course in a friendship way) AND IT LITERALLY MELTED MY HEART. He always asks if Parker is okay (he has a bit of a troubling home) and would probably kill someone for not only Parker, but me too. If he finds out I told you guys this, I’m dead meat. I love him so much, and everyday he always reminds me of just how much of an amazing person he is. He doesn’t think very highly of himself, which is crazy, but he’s an amazing person and I just need to shove that statement into that stupidly thick skull of his.

things to do and tips at a symphony concert 🤍

sitting thru symphony concerts can be challenging at first bc theyre long, the music can be harder to easily understand than pop, and the etiquette can feel sort of arbitrary. so here are some tips for your first symphony concert

1. the audience expects you to be *silent* at these things. no coughing. no candy wrappers. no humming. why? well it kind of takes away from the experience of the live music for some people. do i agree? not really, i think you should be able to express your enjoyment a bit more, but nevertheless, you will get dirty looks if youre humming and banging your head, and tapping your feet.

2. there are pieces and then there are movements within the pieces. you only clap after pieces, not movements! at the end of a movement, there will be a little bit of silence. but, the conductor will not turn around, and the musicians will not set down their instruments. when the entire piece is finished, the conductor will turn around, the musicians will set down their instruments, the conductor will bow, and gesture to the musicians who did some really incredible stuff to stand for recognition.

and now, onto some fun things to watch!

1. keep track of themes and motifs! themes and motifs are these little bits of melody and such that get repeated and chances throughout the piece or movement. sometimes they go away and come back later, and they often mean something big, especially in pieces that tell a story, like ballets and suites. keeping track of these little bits and seeing how they interact with each other, and how they change, is fun and helps you really understand the story that the music is telling.

2. look for unique instruments! your basic symphony orchestra will have violins, violas, cellos, basses, french horns, trumpets, some type of low brass (tuba, euphonium, trombone), flute, oboe, clarinet, usually a bassoon, timpani, piano, cymbals, and other percussion that im not v familiar with. but sometimes, especially in american classical music and 20th century stuff, the music will contain other, less commonly seen instruments. you might find harp, saxophone, piccolo, funky percussion like tubular bells, and more! paying attention to these ones and picking out when they play can be fun.

3. watch the percussionists and brass. percussionists and brass sometimes do not have much to do for a while, and sometimes, they get up to some goofy antics while waiting during their 128 measure rest.

4. watch which sections flip pages the most and least. musicians in the same section will generally all flip their pages around the same time -note: an instrument can have multiple sections within it that have different music. the sections that flip pages most are playing the most often, and those that flip pages least get to play less. violins and cellos especially will be constantly flipping, because they are constantly playing. the poor tuba guy might have two pages of music total.

5. watch the conductor! the conductor does more than keep track of the beat. figuring out what each of their gestures is signaling to the orchestra is a fun puzzle, especially if youve personally never played in a band or orchestra yourself. the conductor will gesture for things like tempo (speed), dynamics (loudness), a section coming in, articulation (“smooth” or “choppy” sound), attack, how to stop a phrase (suddenly or slowly), and more. their gestures will include their baton (the little stick), hand shapes, arm and hand movements, posture, and facial expressions. in a way, its almost like a signed language, meant to communicate how to deliver the music.

overall, be proud of yourself for getting into something new! the classical music community is ~generally~ pretty chill, and going to concerts will become exponentially less intimidating the more you do it.

i was friends with this guy named steven and we were neighbors and i was so in awe with him because he was literally good at everything !! dance captain, cross country star, one of the smartest in our grade, amazing painter, bassoon section leader, funny, like what 😭 he dated my ex best friend all throughout middle and high school (they're married now..) but literally i was surprised every time he could do something else perfectly 😩 i didn't know sunghoon was an ice skater for a pretty long time and when i found out i was like 😥 what can't this boy do.. literally so talented and v v heartthrob

Final Thoughts:

I didn’t expect Elena to have second thoughts about running for student rep. I assume in later episodes that she will probably enter back in and Sasha, Jessica, and Melissa will help her.

Bobby not playing tennis this year is a surprise, maybe he might start his own team. Also, Bobby was looking at the GSA, so maybe he might join it later and we might meet the new kid.

I’m excited that Sam is moving in. I can’t wait for there to be more bonding moments with Elena and Bobby. I wonder if this might cause any conflict with there being another parental figure in that house.

Doesn’t have her own instrument, she borrows from the school and she HATES the reeds, they’re crap. When someone gives her a good reed, she CHERISHES it.

In jazz band also! With the same instrument, but she doesn’t feel ready for solos so she’s usually 2nd or 3rd. Bro when she has to switch from swing to straight she ALWAYS forgets and it’s the band’s downfall.

Tenya Iida:

Has his own trumpet, it’s silver with hints of gold/brass. Takes care of it RELIGIOUSLY.

He HATES having to blow out spit onto the floor, but dude what other choice do you have??

Momo Yaoyorozu:

Sight reading MASTER. she instantly gets the key bro, it’s so rare that she forgets an incidental

Definitely leads sectionals all the time. And she does it WELL.

Kyoka Jirou:

Electric bass or contrabass, give her either and she’s good to go dude.

Also has perfect pitch and knows her music theory WAY more than a high school student should know. She’s a genius.

Her warm ups? Jam sessions with Hanta and Todoroki. She just shouts a key and they go. It’s usually jazz, she plays a pretty constant pattern, Todoroki tries to improvise but hanta takes over pretty quick-

Definitely in jazz band as well. Also in a school competition band (like singer and stuff), also a one-woman-band. She’s in so many bands dude.

Shouto Todoroki:

TENOR SAXOPHONE

Also has a background in flute bc his parents wanted him to have ~versatility~

Knows all the theory in his head, like he knows what’s going on, he just doesn’t know how to explain it

Has plastic reeds. And reeds ESPECIALLY for jazz.

Oh yeah he’s in jazz band! Loves that he’s like, the only tenor saxophone so he gets all the solos

Soprano Saxophone, but can also handle clarinet if the need comes (he just loves the sound of soprano sax you guys)

DEFINITELY in jazz band, but as a Tenor Sax 2 bc he knows if he went as a soprano sax he probably would’ve gotten solos

Is it Momo’s oboe?? Is it Kouda’s soprano sax?? No one knows the different except those two and Jirou

Plays Shostakovich’s jazz suite no. 2 as a warm up

DEFINITELY A SWAYER. He just gets into the mood of the music and SWAYS.

Flautist!! She chose it as an 11 y/o bc it was a girly instrument but she really likes it lol

A mediocre player, she spends most of warm up with Mina tho, she thinks that she’ll get to warm up when she’s playing bc I mean— no one hears the flutes

Wanted to main the picolo for the sole purpose that it’s an Ear Destroyer. Aizawa heard the mischief in her voice and said no.

Sight reading?? What’s that?? She has no idea what’s going on, she just pretends to play and when she’s comfortable with the melody, she’ll just step in. NEVER notices key changes and signatures.

Yuuga Aoyama:

LASKHDSJ FLAUTIST!! Also clarinetist. He loves being able to stay where he is during practice even though he changes instruments it’s sort of funny

His cheeks get SO SORE when he plays clarinet though and he WILL complain.

“My flute is so heavy!” Kind of guy.

Definitely has his own instruments and takes GREAT care of them.

Wetting his reed with his saliva?? No, he plops it in a glass of water instead (the reeds are definitely his own, and expensive)

Tsuyu Asui:

Positions are burnt into her brain dude she’ll never go out of tune.

SO SMOOTH. SOOOO SMOOO- dude she plays so well?? It’s never spitty, but during jazz (yes she’s in jazz), if it’s a moody piece she KNOWS how to make it juuussssttt airy enough to be beautiful

Not that good with fast songs, but she makes up for her amazing ass vibrato and her range. GOD-LIKE RANGE.

Mashirao Ojirou:

FRENCH HORN!!!

Omg he plays like a king. And he’s so proud of being the ONLY one playing French horn, but there is PRESSURE, because a French horn is rlly tricky to tune dude. Have you SEEN it??

Always keeps his mouthpiece with him, as if he’s afraid someone will play his instrument?? Like no dude it’s good in it’s case but you do you I guess

He doesn’t stand out that much, but in the majestic pieces where he has a 5 measure solo?? He gives it his all and he pulls it OFF. Those moments are always the highlight of the piece

Mezou Shouji:

Bass clarinet!!

Once he managed to growl through bass clarinet and literally ALL the saxophone players were jealous AS FUCK

Buddy goes to a low E♭ like it’s nothing?? And then he goes up to like a high high C and you’re sitting there like THE FUCKING RANGE-

His warmups are like, quick scales and arpeggios. Bro he’s so steady when he plays and he could play for HOURS. Sore cheeks?? Don’t know her.

He so proud of being a bass clarinetist, but when he saw an octobass clarinet?? Aizawa better order one of those for him RIGHT. NOW.

Fumikage Tokoyami:

Baritone saxophone. Also lowkey really wants to learn bassoon because it’s such an old instrument

SKSKS he and Shouji sit next to each other, Tokoyami loves to read off of Shouji’s partition and create the WORST fourths you’ll ever hear. Even Midoriya told them to shut the fuck up once

PERCUSSIONIST. Especially loves the bells, timpani, vibraphone and marimba.

He’s in the back judging EVERYONE. It’s so great for him, he gets to stand there and cringe and no one will know

Totally able to play 4 mallets like the king he is

Surprisingly enough, he’s rlly good in music theory. Like he could probably compose or transpose something no problem

Aizawa’s favourite, of course. Will ask him to sit in front while they play and circle the parts where he thinks something sounds off

Percussionist as well!! She loves snares but you’ll see her pick up castagnettes even if y’all are playing something like Gymnopédie no. 3 she’s a bit confused but she got the spirit.

CANNOT READ SHEET MUSIC. Like notes?? No. She can do beats, just not notes. Let Shinsou figure out the ancient languages dude
