i saw this tweet and found it interesting for two reasons. one is that some people base how good cartoon network would be to toh by how it treated su, and despite the fact that su’s treatment by the network was considered poor at the time, now its thought to be exceptionally good in comparison to modern shows.

two is how exactly su got impacted by a limited budget. a common criticism is how characters like connie, peridot, and lapis are left out of missions. but balancing a lot of characters is not only hard but also costly (extra animation, extra voices—it’s been revealed that the show is limited to a set number of characters per episode otherwise they’re over budget). animation mistakes are not uncommon since retakes cost extra. the entire reason the original show got cut short was due to loss of funding!

I don't know how to explain the sheer insanity of comics timelines, so here's my favorite example:

Tim Drake starts his sophomore year. A few months later Stephanie finds out she's 2 months pregnant. About 3 months later No Man's Land starts and lasts a year, during which Steph has her baby. A few months after the end of No Man's Land, Cass makes a deal with Lady Shiva. 11 months later Bruce Wayne is accused of murder and arrested. A month later Cass fights Shiva to the death. Bruce breaks out of prison well Cass still has bruises. Six months later Bruce is still a fugitive.

It's the first day of spring.

For the record, I've gotten another ask that is complaining that I am encouraging people to branch out and experiment with original fiction vs fanfiction for the short story events -- that is to say, the events that consist of four, 5k short stories in a month, NOT me telling people they have to write 30k original words in November. If you read it that way, please go back and re-read the original posts.

It has part of this blog from day 1 that fanfiction is not only included and embraced in this challenge alongside technical and non-fiction writing, and if you take me encouraging people to also give original fiction *a try* on one of the mini challenges as a personal attack of some kind, I'm not sure what to say.... except I'm not going to have my inbox filled with this.

Re-read my biggest, top post, where I literally included Fanfiction and technical, non-fiction writing as fully fledged options on the literal announcement post of this blog.

I do not hate fanfiction, I do not look down on fanfiction, and I read and write plenty of it myself.

Suggesting that people might consider writing a short original story for one of the 5k a week challenges is not me attacking fanfiction or fanfiction writers, because I literally am one.

I am not going to be engaging in any further asks that act like I am browbeating or guilting people into not writing fanfiction or that I am "looking down on fanfiction writers".

I've responded privately to probably a dozen different blogs who asked about fanfiction since this blog began and forgot those dozen responses weren't visible to the rest of Tumblr, so it looked like the only times I had mentioned it at all were when I got asked twice in 24 hours about it.

Its been on the announcement post of this blog since day one that fanfiction is allowed along with any other form of writing.

If you are mad at me for encouraging people to give original writing a try for a writing contest alongside fanfiction then idk man 🤷

-General Headcanons: Yamanami Keisuke-

-No Spoilers for GudaGuda 7-

Foreword: Freed from the clutches of NPC Jail is none other than the Shinsengumi’s softest man! To celebrate his arrival, here’s his General Headcanons! Oh and I’ll be releasing his sprites throughout the event week too as I work on my To-do List and other things.

But that’s enough from me right now! Here you go!

Do not let this man’s soft, kind and affable demeanor fool you. He can absolutely take you and everyone else for that matter in an argument. Be it screaming match or friendly debate, it doesn’t make a difference, he will meet your energy and you will regret going low on him if you decide to take it that far. He isn’t one to fold unless you can actually prove he’s wrong, to which he’ll concede and actually admit he’s mistaken. That’s not to say he’s completely obstinate or anything of the sort, he only really locks in like that when things get heated, much to his own disappointment. If you ask Sannan, it’s one of his worst qualities. Something he doesn’t like to see in others and something he really doesn’t like in himself. Though the people around him more or less call it ‘strong conviction’ rather than bullheadedness, which he still doesn’t agree with. In not heated arguments, he’s much better and more often than not the dispute will be resolved peacefully. It’s just…some people Hijikata really set him off, y’know?

Note: If you don’t believe me then look at his angry sprites. That man WILL throw down.

The second he found out that Chaldea had both a book club and a poetry club was the same second he joined. In life he wrote poetry, so I’d imagine that he’d keep up the hobby in his second one too. He does get a bit embarrassed reading his own stuff aloud but gets over it relatively quickly when he gets to know the other members. On the book side of things, he’s pretty hyped to have so much literature in one place that he can just…walk to, in a reasonable amount of time.

This man will not, under any circumstances, leave his room—or wherever he’s sleeping at—until he does his hair in the morning. This is the first thing he does when he gets out of bed and nothing will stop him from completing this task. Neither god nor man can stop Yamanami from tying his hair up before he leaves and he won’t be caught dead with it untied. The exit to a time loop could be Sannan not doing his hair and—well, shit! I guess he’s stuck there forever! …Just kidding. I think he’d stomach one day with his hair down to escape a time loop, it’s not that deep. Though it is enough to where he can confidently say that he can count on two hands the number of people who have seen him with his hair down. It’s always tied up in some fashion and the day will come where you think you got him and he’ll just smile and point at the singular bobby pin holding back a section of his bangs. Boom, he’s got you on a technicality. If you—for some reason—decide to make it your life’s mission to see this beautiful man with his hair completely down then you will find yourself embroiled in the world’s longest running game with Okita and Saito snickering in the back. Those two have seen him with his hair down and they aren’t telling you shit! They will play it up like it’s the eighth wonder of the world to add salt on the wound when you fail.

Note: His fastest time is thirty seconds and he occasionally attempts to beat his record.

He’s great with kids and you’ll often see him and Okita playing games with Jack, Nursery Rhyme, Bunyan, and Janta. While he can’t play too hard due to the arm injury that he sustained, he does play a mean game of hide and seek. If Yamanami is one of the people hiding, when he’s one of the last people left then he’ll throw by sneaking up behind you and grabbing your shoulders to scare the shit out of you. While this may seem like a mean spirited play on his part, the laughter from the other hiders at your screaming will give them away, so it’s really just his subtle way of helping you end the game. If he’s the one seeking then I hope you have a really good spot because you’re dealing with the Shinsengumi’s best seeker and he’s not one to be slacking. And yes, puppy eyes do work against him but its success rate is 42% so don’t expect to be saved very often.

Note: It should be noted that him and Okita don’t play tag together. Ever. If you ask Sannan about it, then he’ll simply say that Okita never asked. If you ask Okita about it then she’ll simply say that she’s not feeling it at the moment, which is what she says every time you ask. If you ask Saito about it, then he’ll put a hand on your shoulder and offer you the sage wisdom that some things are best left alone.

Yamanami takes really good care of his glasses. He has two cloths on hand and even has the spray too so as to keep the lenses clear when he’s out and about. Our guy knows all the alternative ways to keep the lenses and frames clean, so he will educate you if you’re doing something unholy like using fucking Windex on your glasses. On another note, he did get his prescription soon after he materialized and does have a spare in case his original ones break. He’ll be mourning their loss for a while. He tried contacts but found the feeling to be weird and mainly keeps them somewhere as the ‘I have no glasses but I must read’ emergency pair when both his original and spare break. Oh yeah, and I believe him to be farsighted. His two other ascensions have no glasses, and those are the ascensions where he’s very clearly dressed to kill (haha) so it would stand to reason that his eyesight without his glasses must not be that bad or he’s farsighted. As someone who can’t see shit 3 inches in front of her face without her glasses, I can’t imagine fighting someone who I can barely see. Life or death situation, I’m still with the coke bottle glasses! So I headcanon Sannan to be farsighted since it’d be the less debilitating thing to have in battle and it makes more sense when he takes it off for his 2nd and 3rd ascensions since he can see just fine far away without them.

Sannan, as implied by the bags under his eyes, doesn’t get that good of a sleep most days. It’s not having nightmares or anything dramatic like that, it’s just that he can’t relax enough for sleep to actually get a grip on him. Being submerged in darkness with the silence ringing in his ears sets the stage for a certain three words to take the floor. Coulda, woulda, and shoulda. This man has a lot of regrets and he can’t help but ruminate on how things would’ve turned out for him and his friends if he had just done better. If he was more wise, more assertive, more strong, more…everything—maybe if he wasn’t himself, then maybe that life would have ended more sweetly. Maybe, maybe, maybe. The myriad of possibilities of how things coulda been if he woulda done what he shoulda from the start, they plague him. That’s why this man has bags under his eyes, because he’s torturing himself for hours on end every night for shit he knows he can’t change. It’s awful.

Please, please, for the love of all that is cool beans, PLEASE make sure he sorties occasionally. Once a week, or once every two weeks—doesn’t matter. Just make sure you bring him out onto the battlefield. Do not regulate him to just filing papers. His mental health will tank and you will have a front row seat to watching a flower wither before your eyes. He’ll get depressed being all cooped up inside while everyone else is out there fighting and bringing you victory. He’ll start wondering if the reason you don’t send him out is because of his injury and it only gets worse from there as time goes on. Is it because he ran away? Is it because of the things he took part in? How about the things he let happen? Did someone tell you something about him? Do you think he’s too weak? So on and so forth until the end of time. He’ll try being nice about it and subtly ask you to have him on your comp next time but then he’ll follow it up by saying that, of course, it’s up to you and you’re the boss so…yeah. Get him outside on the field, doesn’t matter for what—proofs farming or bone farming, doesn’t matter—just get him out there and make him useful. And don’t you dare look at him with that pitiful look in your eyes either. He knows it well and it hurts him more than any physical wound ever could.

When he was alive, he earned—under the Hokushin Itto discipline—a license that basically told everyone that he knew all that there was to know about Hokushin Itto-ryu and is permitted, legally, to teach it. Which means that you absolutely can ask Sannan to teach you swordplay if you so choose. He, at first, would be astonished that you’d ask him of all people to teach you when you already have legends like Sasaki Kojirou, Tomoe Gozen, and Yagyu Munenori to teach you much more than what he learned. I mean, he’s just some dude. Why choose him? If you are persistent then he will relent and you’ll obtain Sannan as your teacher. He takes his new position very seriously and is committed to teaching you how to handle yourself well in battle, it could be the difference between life or death, after all. That’s not to say his gentle demeanor has vanished in favor of something more stern, no, if anything he seems kinda happy to be doing this. Though, it should be noted that, on rare occasions where you’re practicing on your own while supervised, you could turn around and catch a glimpse of Yamanami’s wistful expression looking through you. He’s quick to correct himself and give you a wave, but a tint of pain can be seen in those plum colored eyes.

Note: It’s not possible, but do try to keep the fact that Yamanami’s training you under wraps for as long as you can. The inevitable consequence is Okita randomly popping up sometimes mid training session to ‘quiz’ you on what you’ve learned so far. And by ‘quiz’ I mean ‘spar’ and by ‘spar’ I mean ‘knock you on your ass in under 5 seconds.’ Thankfully it doesn’t occur too often and Oki isn’t just going to beat you up and leave either, she’ll pitch in with your education too and tell you stories about the old days at the Shieikan. Saito and Hijikata will leave you be and’ll only participate in your training if you ask, with latter being harder to convince.

No one is quite sure how this happened, but through some means Sannan has gotten a bit into metal music, which is a stark contrast to his more easy listening and ambient music taste. Quite a few people think that Nobu is the one responsible when it was actually Tomoe. But not just any metal music, folk metal and symphonic metal. It can’t be TOO metal-y, it has to be diluted. To best show you what I mean, I’m going to list an example. 夜ごとの闇の奥底でfeat.LIQU@ by Undead Corporation. (aka. Yogoto no Yami no Okusoko de) For that matter, quite a few of UC’s works fit the bill too like 天涯 (Tengai) or 常世想兼神 (Tokoyo Omohikane no Kami) hit the spot as well. And while the mix of traditional instruments with metal is pretty great for him already, what Yamanami appreciates the most about these songs are the lyrics. Oh my gosh the lyrics are amazing. You can look up the translated lyrics here, here and here but they have that level of poeticism and wordplay that I just know that Sannan would appreciate.

You may recall that I earlier stated that Sannan has an arm injury. While I won’t quite get into how it happened for fear of spoiling the new event, I will tell you how he lives with it in Chaldea. It hurts from time to time and while it’s not that bad, it can flare up to an almost unbearable degree if Yamanami pushes himself too hard. And the thing is… As much as our megane friend here is the voice of reason in the Shinsengumi, the fact of the matter is that he’s just as liable to fall into the same traps everyone else fell into. Just look at him argue with Hijikata! He’s no better and he knows it. That in mind he can and will push himself past his limits and he will pay for it dearly on the pain scale, it might even cause him to pass out if the situation’s that bad. Though I wouldn’t worry about it too much since those are extreme circumstances. Still, you should keep an eye on him because the only complaints he’s going to give about his arm are the ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ type of complaints that don’t really stand out among what’s going on in the field. Thankfully, Yamanami does have painkillers to help but he often forgets them in his room, so make sure to have some Tylenol and snacks on hand for when that happens, ‘kay?

Endnote: And that’s that! You can’t see me right now, but I’m oscillating into a different plane of existence from the sheer excitement! I can’t wait to have him buff my Hajime-chan for solo comps in the future! Once I grind those godforsaken spirit roots, I’ll have him fully ascended! Ugh, and I’ll also have to grind proofs for his skills too… Man, I hate being in mat hell…

Worm Arc 13 thoughts:

Everything is fine, everyone is doing great, but Brian might need to use some vacation days. Just, I dunno, something tells me the dude might benefit from a short break.

We start right off with Taylor refusing to admit she kicked Mannequin's ass, even though all of her allies and all of his allies both agree she did. Which is my daughter 101. I wish she could love herself a little more.

Lisa got her game. It might not be perfect but I think it was well done by her. It still gives them more structure to work with, and more ways to fight back. As this arc shows.

Aisha is way to fucking reckless. I mean I feel for her I really do, but god damn girl. Sometimes your teammates are right! Even if your brother can be a bit of a dick about it.

General note, I absolutely love how Wildbow wrote stuff around Aisha using her power. Just every bit of it. It is very good. I have legit multiple times during this went "Oh fuck I forgot about IMP!" and that is perfect.

Mannequin kills Lucy, so he goes from being on my shit list to being on my super shit list. I'm going to be sad if I never get to see him die.

If Bentley had died I would have burned the world down. So luckily that didn't happen.

Sucks that Mannequin also killed some of Skitter's people. And that he ended up living in the end. But it was fun to watch him get his ass kicked a second time and have to get saved by Burnscar.

I fucking LOVE Genesis. I'm so glad we get to see more of her. Her power is so much fun.

WOLFSPIDER! Taylor bonding with Bitch over trauma. Taylor basically thinking you want someone to tell you want to do. And then “You had me at no holds barred"! AHHHH! Murder lesbians. Go fuck them up girls.

Skitter had a pretty decent plan for attacking the Nine, all things considered. Very good use of their strengths and the abilities they had on hand. But she did make one major mistake. Well, to be fair everyone involved did. And that was having Trickster be the only sniper. They should have brought a few of Coil's troops. Even one more half competent sniper and they would have killed one of the Nine in that first attack. If they had brought Coil's Sniper? 2 of the Nine dead minimum, maybe 3.

Also, the mannequins for Trickster to swap people with were very clever. Though they could have prevented Brian getting captured if they had brought 1 more. And you don't even need a good sniper with those. Point a gun at the head of a mannequin. Swap and shoot at basically the same moment. Bullet hits them before they even know they've swapped and you can't miss. But still, they did pretty good.

I mean maybe not from Grue's PoV, but whatever. He didn't die! He's fine.

Cherish getting absolutely fucking DESTROYED by Tattletale! Oh god it was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. Cherish tries to get into Tattletales head and Tattletale is just constantly 10 steps ahead and just gaaahhh! Fuck I love it. I would read 100 chapters that was just Tattletale fucking with people like that.

The setup Skitter used to talk to the Protectorate was so fucking cool. Full blown mimicking human speech with only bugs?! She's amplified her words before, but never had the bugs speak entirely on their own. Just the most badass thing. The thing that makes everyone remember you! Swarm of bugs shows up at the superhero base, takes the shape of a person and starts talking with bug sounds, saying "oh hey we just kicked the fuck out of the Nine and captured two of them, wanna actually be heroes and help us finish this?" God damn.

Also Trickster getting through a locked door by teleporting the lock away was very neat.

Of course the heroes don't help. Miss Militia and her "We can handle that on our own, with more calculation and less recklessness." Really? Are you really going to have less recklessness? Cause I've read the interlude. But more on that later.

HOLY FUCK IT SUCKS TO BE BRIAN! I mean, he got better. But still!

I knew my daughter wasn't going to die. I knew her two girlfriends weren't going to die. I was pretty sure Imp and Grue weren't going to die (I wasn't sure how Grue was living but it seemed likely) but even with all that I was kinda panicking during the whole Bonesaw thing.

SECOND TRIGGER EVENT! SECOND TRIGGER EVENTS CONFIRMED! FUCK YES! I'M SO SORRY THAT HAD TO HAPPEN TO YOU BRIAN BUT THAT WAS SO COOL!

Siberian a projection confirmed. I mean basically confirmed. Confirmed enough for me. Like sure the details aren't revealed and such, but they are totally some form of projection. (I don't list my predictions on here usually so everyone will just have to trust me when I say I guessed Siberian was a projection in arc 11 or 12.)

Also saw some (I assume) other alternate earths in that trigger event, which is neat. I'm sure they'll never come up again.

Skitter sending a note to the Protectorate that was basically "We killed one and injured another, you are a bunch of cowards that suck, fuck you!" was wonderful.

I am very sad for Doll Lesbian and I hope someone can help her! She needs care in this trying time. Cause I love her and she is so cool and it isn't fair that shitty things are happening to her.

Interlude 1 - Aisha's mother sucks. I'm so sorry for the poor girl. Aisha also makes very bad choices. She got so fucking lucky she got away from the Nine the first time and then just went and got herself caught anyway! The fact that her power is passive and she has to work to turn it off sure fucking sucks though.

Interlude 2 - Hey Miss Militia, remember how I said I was going to get back to the "more calculation and less recklessness"? Cause we're back to that. Piggot is planning on dropping WHITE PHOSPHOROUS on part of a city! And then dropping a bunch of bombs made by a dangerous supervillain! Bombs that no one knows exactly what they do! How is that "less recklessness"? Also the PRT is just horribly run. God damn Piggot shouldn't have to be requesting stuff from other offices directly, they should have a central admin that manages reallocation of resources in situations like this. And they should have a full system of teams setup that aren't attached to a city, but instead deploy where they are needed! The government already has systems like this for disaster response and stuff. And between Endbringers and the Nine and other stuff the PRT knows that sometimes certain locations need more support. Terribly managed, badly run, they need better admin staff. They need people that know how to use a god damn spreadsheet. I have a lot more to say about Piggot and her plan but I feel like I'll get some chances to comment on it in Arc 14.

i need all future comics writers of frank (and anyone on DDBA) to stop trying to write him as a guy who had a normal childhood and was always just kinda Like That. or that he was simply destined to become the punisher, but that’s kind of a separate topic.

people who go into the military at 18 rarely have normal childhoods, they are often raised in abusive environments that are normalized. the urge to go into the military typically does not come from people who aren’t used to some form of abuse, because why would you willingly want to go into that? unless you are susceptible to indoctrination toward having faith in a system from a young age and aren’t able to discern the red flags? the military system preys on poor young men in particular by scouting them and offering all these bells and whistles (free college, healthcare, community) and feelings of importance, but then just forgets about them afterward.

side note: it’s actually such a disservice to many veterans to forget about how the military is an abusive system. it literally strips you of everything with no help in reintegrating back into society (other than by members of the same community). i get TPS1 tried to do something with this but dropped the ball. it feels like many writers just use his marine background as some sort of fun fact that only comes into play with certain things, but it very much shapes who you are and changes your identity. it’s a very cult-like system.

many people who want to serve are related to others who have prior. many people (especially men) who want to serve at that age have an underlying need that they think can be met. many people are brainwashed by military propaganda and believe it is the right thing to do. especially when it comes to religion, there’s this idea of men using their bodies to protect the innocent that goes back hundreds of years, and this idea of serving god, which we see young francis try to do in two ways. (side note: why do they keep removing his religious background? i liked the nod to it in the nmcu but it seems modern comics writers (looking at you jason aaron) just forget this?) besides, the functions of religion for people are very similar to the functions of the military as far as members go, namely community and a sense of greater purpose.

to me, as a reader/watcher, threads of probable abuse history are present in frank’s character, and i wish we had a writer brave enough to write about it. why else would he care so much about innocents and victims? why else would he become suicidal and guilt stricken when he hurts an innocent? it makes you think: was there no one who protected him or someone else he knew?

and this may not mean anything but idk i think he’s so much more tragic and juicy if you look at him like someone who is not the perfect victim (and maybe doesn’t even recognize their abuse) but someone who instead of healing and becoming soft, becomes angry and violent afterward. trauma, especially repeated trauma, does not effect people all the same way and i really wish they would just be bold enough to work with that. i get trying to piss off the alt right but completely changing the character to fit the same stereotype of a ‘psychopath’ (which is an outdated term) as they do in horror movies about killer children is just poor writing. again, talking about punisher 2022, but this was kinda in nmcu too. and sure yeah they’ve retired his character (but not the punisher….? ok) in the comics, but for when he inevitably does come back, yeah.

theres something abt suzaku and lelouch that makes for really nice atmospheric dreams for me i think it’s a big part of why cg has stuck with me lolll. very fitting actually bc i originally watched it because i kept having dreams about it and got curious…

going to keep this vague on purpose but playing reload has reactivated brain chemicals in me that i forgot i had.

i think i'd want to make a more thought out post later, but i think my favorite thing about reload (aside from seeing minato in full HD glory) is how much it's made me think about video games as a storytelling medium- specifically with what mechanics and game design imply for characters.

there's a lot of quality of life features added to reload that help players easily enter a flow state and get immersed in the gameplay (most notable with tartarus)! which is so dope! reload has been such a nice blend of the mechanics from both FES and portable and it feels like a love letter to persona 3 fans.

there are definitely mechanics i miss from FES (minato's ability to wield multiple weapons being one of them). i can't deny that FES has some dated mechanics that don't necessarily feel fun for the player experience... but!

i think i mostly miss things from FES because i feel like so much of minato's characterization (for me) was informed by the gameplay experience and mechanics (e.g. fatigue system). obviously there's still other ways you can put together his personality (his dialogue responses), but i think game mechanics are a bit part of it, for me.

but in spite of that, i think reload is a really nice introduction to persona 3, it's so much more accessible and has a bunch of things to help make it more fun :) so far i think i'd recommend it to people :D

a girl from a rural seaside town is offered a place in a school that only takes the ‘best and brightest’ - and jumps at the chance, but quickly finds out things are not as they seem: they’re there to be conditioned into obedient wives, and become part of the society which enforces the belief that end of the world was caused by people ‘going against nature’
