supernatural s10e20 angel heart (w. robbie thompson)
knew it must be jimmy because he's got the little boy hairstyle like jerry in that episode of seinfeld
Tumblr media Tumblr media
s10e20 / seinfeld s5e8 the barber
huffing angel grace (??) combined with djinn-ish hallucinations, all right
oh, so we have two amelias. good planning. sam's and claire's mom. i'm going to not try to contemplate the logistics of claire living on her own and looking this put together and with cash to burn because i doubt the writers thought about it for more than 2 seconds either. i guess she's 18 now?
CASTIEL I need help from both of you. You were both troubled teens. You speak her language.
snorted
DEAN Close enough. Come on, give me something to punch already. I'm kidding. I'm fine. I'm just...I'm fine.
everything's fine!
DEAN Look, I'm just saying, she's been surviving on her own for quite a while now, and ... and then partly because she doesn't have anybody to answer to. You know, there's... There's nobody holding her back. CASTIEL We just found her in a hospital. You telling me that she'd be better off on her own? DEAN I'm saying she might be stronger on her own.
no one to keep him her accountable and not out slaughtering randos? he's fine though.
you know. one thing i really liked about mulder and scully's dynamic was that it was largely always them against the world. having there be friction between sam and dean so often that they overcome and then surprise some new fresh hell pops up, it is emotionally tiring and tiresome because it starts to feel less like the exception than the rule. i can see how 15 seasons of 20+ episodes is often going to lead to this type of problem. i'm still gonna bitch about it
Tumblr media
(another motel with a full sized appliance. not retro, just old fridge. i guess that's something but still wonky)
SAM Never got the chance to find out. My mom died when I was a baby. CLAIRE I'm ... I'm sorry. I didn't ... SAM Oh, no, it's okay. I-I got to know her later in life. And, yeah, I suppose we got along okay. CLAIRE What? SAM In this line of work, death isn't always good-bye.
casting back trying to remember when this sam actually interacted with mary and not her hallucination/ghost/someone wearing her face. was it a time travel thing? ugh. (5x13 i guess?)
claire has bomb ass hair that i'm making heart eyes over but the overstyling for her character is a shame. the curled ends, the half up but looped with the wrap around covering which would require pins? yeah, no. little bit reminds me of earlier teen wolf seasons where they did very beauty queen hair styling on the girls
Tumblr media
cas with the gift bag and dean's face, i'm cracking up. EVERYTHING'S FINE, dean's face twitches in rage
DEAN (standing up from the table) All right, I'm gonna get suited up and head back over there.
CASTIEL I'm coming with you. CLAIRE I'm coming with you, too. DEAN (turning towards Sam) You wanna get in on this?
so, they're just gonna roll up to a crime scene with an 18 year old in tow? bring your daughter to work day, uh huh
Tumblr media
CASTIEL No fighting. DEAN (scoffs) Yeah, tell her that. CASTIEL (sternly) Both of you.
yes, dad 😒 cheap laugh, i'll take it. leaving the two least (currently) sensible people together who don't get along seems like a poor choice
CASTIEL So do you think she's better off on her own? SAM Cas, she just turned 18. CASTIEL You were alone when you left for college at that age, weren't you? SAM Yeah, but that's different. CASTIEL How, Sam? SAM Here's all I know ... going it alone, that's no way to live. You being there for her, even if she thinks she doesn't want you to be there for her, that's good for both of you. CASTIEL Maybe, in the end. SAM In the end.
so is our sam admitting it wasn't good for him to leave for college alone? that kind of shakes up my idea of his characterization. maybe if it's just he wished he had kept contact with dean (begrudgingly adding) and john while at college? but still having his go at a normal life?
i mean, cute little claire and dean bickering-bonding with minigolf, even if i think it's not remotely believable :P dean's feeling less stabby, i guess. and an angel sword, okay. sure, why not
so even worser angel man was what, huffing bits of her soul? yes, apparently
ah yes, tearful reunion with mom, apologies all around, claire appreciates what dean and sam do for people, and mom's dead.
so i guess amelia and jimmy are soulmates too then? if they actually share a heaven? the whole conceit that everyone but soulmates has heaven alone is such a weird one. but do they get like, facsimiles of the people they love if they don't get to share heaven with them? like dean's memory-mom. or are all these people really just chill never talking to another soul ever. weird choices. i mean, it gave us canonical soulmates sam and dean which was a *wild* choice, but
Tumblr media
ha ha. so yes, adopted by jody too
CLAIRE Will you keep an eye on him? (Dean and Claire look over at Castiel who is talking with Sam) He's been through enough.
????? what. why would she say this? someone needs to keep an eye on him because he consistently makes the worst choices when left to his own devices -_-
golden hour lighting and nice choice of music at the end at least. blue eyes crying in the rain by willie nelson. eke out some feelings i wouldn't have had otherwise

Doctor x Reader (Platonic!Jack x Reader)
Tumblr media
Prompt: When on an adventure with the Doctor and Jack the reader is attacked by an alien called a Psyfon, a race with psychic abilities who feed off of emotions. The reader gets stuck in their perfect dream realm and the Doctor has to save them before they die in there.
Warnings: Dead family members.
A/N: Pretty much any Doctor can be used, but I mostly thought of 10 and 11 while writing it. The aliens were inspired by the Djinn from Supernatural. I was also inspired by Doctor Who: The Infinite Quest a little bit so if you’re a fan of the main series you should totally check that out. Also please let me know if I made an error in pronouns. I tried to make the reader gender neutral so everyone could relate.
You had been traveling with the Doctor for a while now and had run into Jack not long after you met him. When you first met Jack, an old friend of the Doctor’s, you didn’t believe him when he said he had known the Doctor for over a century. Judging by his earthly appearance and his age there was no way this could be true, but after watching him die you quickly learned of his immortality.
You met the Doctor when he saved you from the Cybermen. Sadly he couldn’t save your family from such a terrible fate, but he got you out just in time. Ever since then they had been your biggest fear. Jack and the Doctor had lived for so long they both knew what it was like to lose the people they cared for most...nobody knew better than the Doctor. They helped you get through the pain that came after such a big loss. The Doctor would often hear crying coming from your room during your early nights on the TARDIS when he sat up late in the console room and he would be at your side in seconds to comfort you. He was always there for you no matter what. You wouldn’t have gotten to this point without him. By now the nightmares had gone away, mostly, and the scars had stopped bleeding, but they were still there. They would always be there. This history was a part of you forever, your history, and you were just lucky enough to have the Doctor in it. If you’re being completely honest with yourself you had grown a little bit of a crush on the Doctor. I mean who wouldn’t? He’s the Doctor. You loved him, but you would never tell him. You were happy living with his ignorance. Life was better in the bliss of your friendship.
It had been just a normal adventure with your two best friends, Jack and the Doctor, but then again nothing was ever really normal with them. You were separated from your boys as your ran down a long dark corridor. Your shoes slapped against the cold, hard pavement as you rounded the corner. When you looked behind you there seemed to be nothing chasing you anymore. You stopped to catch your breath.
The three of you had been investigating a series of psychic attacks that were leaving people brain dead and full of a strange blue goo. You weren’t sure what kind of alien could do such a thing, but you knew you had to find out.
“(Y/N)?!” I hear Jack yell in a hushed tone. His voice echos throughout the empty building. You turn to look for him when you start to hear ringing in your ears and a giant pounding in your head. You feel your eyes close as your body hits the ground.
THIRD PERSON POV
Jack stood next to (Y/N)’s body with his gun aimed at the monster while the Doctor crouched down to check their pulse.
“You better hope they’re still alive!” Jack said as he shoved his big gun in the monster’s face. Usually the Doctor would object to pointing guns at people, but he was so worried about (Y/N) he didn’t have time to care about Jack’s manners.
“What did you do to them?!” The Doctor asks standing up to look at the alien. They were from a species called Psyfons, a group of aliens who feed off the emotions of other people.
“Don’t worry, they’re only sleeping,” the alien slurred.
“For now,” they added. Jack hit the alien with the butt of his gun and knocked them out. The Doctor gave him a disapproving look.
“You should be happy. Knocking them out was the least I could do” Jack joked. The Doctor rolled his eyes and dropped down to (Y/N)‘s body again. Jack joined him this time. They were sweating. He placed his hand over their forehead.
“They’re burning up” Jack stated the obvious.
“Yes, I know I-I I have to do-do this thing-“ The Doctor starts stuttering.
“Then do it!” Jack cuts him.
“But I can’t! I swore I’d never do it again! Not since-“ He started to get a little choked up.
“Since what?!” Jack questioned.
“Not since Donna” The Doctor finished sadly. Jack put a hand on the Doctor’s shoulder.
“It’s the only way to save them” Jack told him.
“It was the only way to save her too” The Doctor says sadly.
“Maybe it’ll be different this time” Jack suggests.
“We don’t know that” The Doctor says coldly as he puts his hands to (Y/N)’s head and enter’s their mind.
(Y/N)’S POV
You wake up laying in the grass in front of your old house. You hear the sound of birds and the sun is just a little too bright for comfort, but it’s home. You take a deep breath of the fresh air. You smile, but you’re confused. You look over to see the Doctor standing in the TARDIS door. Jack is nowhere to be seen.
“Where’s Jack?” You ask.
“Oh, popped off to see his friends at Torchwood, I suppose” The Doctor tells you. You nod as you look back to your house.
“And we’re home because...” You wonder.
“The Psyfon knocked you out. I figured this would be a nice, safe place to rest for a while” He reminds you.
“And I couldn’t just rest in the TARDIS?” You ask.
“I thought this would be a nice surprise” He says.
“What year is it?” You ask. You doubt he would be able to bring you to a time period where your family is alive, but it never hurts to ask.
“2021” He answers.
“So they’re not here” you say sadly.
“Who’s not here?” He asks.
“My family” You say becoming more sad, but more confused by the second. How could he just forget like that? You know he’s lived for a long time, but surely he wouldn’t forget something this important to you. Would he? He gives you a confused look.
“Doctor, my family is d-“ You’re cut off by the sound of a door opening.
“You didn’t tell us you were coming!” You hear a voice say. You stop dead in your tracks and you go white. It can’t be.
“Mom?” You say as you turn around to see her. You run to her and engulf her in a giant hug.
“Woah, what’s that for?” Your mother asks delighted, as you practically knock her down.
“I just missed you. That’s all” You say as you try to hold back your tears.
“Where is everybody?” You ask, as it suddenly dawns on you that your family is alive.
“Your father went to go pick up your brother and sister from school” She informs you. The Doctor comes up behind you and takes your hand. He squeezes it, giving you a big smile. He is an impossible man, but you never knew he could do something like this for you.
“Why don’t you two come in? It’s almost time for tea” Your mother invites you in. You gladly accept, of course. You watch your mother go into the kitchen as you pull the Doctor aside into the living room and hug him tightly.
“Thank you” You tell him. That’s when you start to let go of a few tears.
“I figured it was time to go home” He says happily. The hug lingers a little longer than usual. He just holds you. Then he places a quick kiss to your cheek, just missing your lips. Your face goes red. This is completely out of character for your relationship with the Doctor. Sure you had always wanted to be something more, but he didn’t need to know that. You didn’t want your relationship with him to change. You figure it’s best to just dance around the subject. You pull away and clear your throat.
“So, um...how did you do it?” You ask.
“Do what?” He asks looking lovingly into your eyes.
“Bring my family back?” You ask with a slight chuckle.
“I didn’t” He says simply. That’s when your head begins to ring again.
“Let me in, (Y/N). That’s it.” You hear the Doctor’s voice, but his lips aren’t moving. Suddenly there is a light and the Doctor shifts uncomfortably. He cracks his neck and stretches out his arms.
“Good thing there was a body here for me to jump into or else that could have been disastrous” He comments. You give him a confused look.
“Oh, yes! I’m sorry (Y/N), but none of this is real” He says plainly.
“What?” You ask. This all certainly looks and feels real. The sound of a kettle whistle comes from the kitchen. The Doctor sniffs the air.
“Is that tea?” He asks.
“Tea’s ready!” Your mom calls from the kitchen.
“Doctor, you need to tell me what’s going on right now” You demand. He looks into the kitchen and makes a face.
“The Psyfon. It put you in a dream state so it could feed off your energy and emotions. You’re dying in the real world. Turning to goo” He held out the last word as he made a face of disgust and interest. He gave you a sad look as he started to put the pieces together, of where you were and who you were with. You started to feel your legs give out from underneath you. The Doctor guided you to a chair.
“I want to stay” You say numbly.
“(Y/N), none of this is real” He starts.
“I don’t care. I want to stay” You repeat.
“You’ll die in here” He begins.
“Time works differently in dreams. I could easily spend my whole life here-“ You try to rationalize it.
“You’ll never see me again” The Doctor tries.
“There’s a version of you here-“ You try, but are cut off again. He crouches down to your level and takes hold of your hands.
“(Y/N), none of this is real. It will never be real. Your pain balances out your beauty. There wouldn’t be one without the other and that’s what makes you human and you are SO human. This is all in your head. You will be alone in here forever. Please just come home with me. There are people there who will miss you. Come back with me, back to the TARDIS, please!” He results to begging as a last ditch effort.
“How can I go back when everything is so perfect here? I’m perfect here. I’m not a mess. I can just be me” You start to cry.
“You’re always perfect to me and that little bit of mess makes you human. It doesn’t lessen your beauty or your creativity or your kindness. It just adds to who you are as a person” He says, wiping away a tear.
“Please. Come home with me” He begs. You nod in response as he gives your hands a squeeze. He gives you a sad smile. You stand together and you hear the doorbell ring.
“That must be your father. He forgot his keys again” Your mother laughs as she walks to the door. The door opens and the Doctor pushes himself in front of your as three Cybermen crash through the door.
“DELETE” One yells, as it kills your mother.
“NO” You scream, as the Doctor tries to keep you from running towards her.
“She isn’t real! Come on!” He yells over the sound of pounding Cybermen feet as he pulls you out the back way to the garden.
“Where’s the TARDIS?” He asks.
“It’s on the other side of the house!” You say as you pull him around the building. You lay your eyes on the beautiful blue box as the Doctor shoves his key inside.
“YOU WILL BE UPGRADED” The Cybermen shout. Once unlocked, you push your way through the doors to find a hollow Police Box.
“Why is this happening?!” You cry. The Doctor places his hands on your shoulders.
“The dream is turning into a nightmare to try to keep you here. (Y/N), come on. You have to think. What’s keeping you here?” He asks.
“My family is dead!” You cry.
“Yes, something else” He tries to think. You look at his thinking face. His beautiful thinking face and it strikes you.
“I’m in love with you” You blurt out.
“What?!” He looks back at you with a confused look.
“The version of you here. I think he felt the same way” You give him an embarrassed look. He lets go of a big breath.
“Well...” He starts as he tilts his head.
“I suppose if admitting the way I feel gets us out of here then the real me doesn’t feel very different” He finishes quickly.
“Wait, what?!” You respond. He gives you his classic Doctor smile before the Cybermen fade. Everything fades. The world goes black.
You wake up crying with a pounding headache in your bed in the TARDIS. The Doctor rushes in just like old times.
“It’s okay. I’m here” The Doctor tells you as he sits on your bed and wraps his arms around you.
“I just had the most insane dream” You start to tell him.
“Well...” His voice fades.
“Doctor, was that real?” You ask him. He pulls back to look at you.
“In a sense, yes” He goes on to explain the effects the Psyfon had on you and how he went into your mind to save you. He explains how you were unconscious when you came out of the dream state and that he brought you back to your room on the TARDIS to rest.
“Where’s Jack?” You ask.
“He’s bringing the Psyfon to the Shadow Proclamation for me where they will be tried for their psychological attacks. They won’t hurt anyone anymore” He promises. After you’ve calmed down somewhat he gets up to leave the room.
“You should get some rest” He says opening the door.
“Wait! Doctor, do you think maybe you could stay with me? Just until I fall asleep?” You ask.
“Of course” He responds as he awkwardly climbs into your bed and wraps his arms around you. You almost forget about your confessions until he kisses you on the cheek.
“Goodnight, (Y/N)” He says sweetly.
“Goodnight, Doctor” You say as you drift off to sleep to the sound of his dual heartbeats.

I was wondering if there was a blest equivalent of zodiac signs existing in the ShoH world. Like is there a star sign or season that alludes to a person’s character? I know that in the game the season in which the mc is born does give some stat boost so I was curious! And if so which characters believe in them, take them with a grain of salt, or just flat out ignore them? I can imagine that mimir would take them very seriously if they do exists!
Also, I’m not sure if you’ve answered this but what are some common fairytales in blest? Is there a general story that is well known and popular like how cinderella is widely known to us?
Hi there, thanks for the great question! As far as I know, there isn't really a 1:1 equivalent to star signs or zodiac signs in Blest! There are, like, certain circumstances and omens that are ascribed to people's birth circumstances, some of which include stars, but it's more explicitly superstitious and descriptive of the course a person's life might take, rather than a description of their overall personality, if that makes any sense?
For example:
Blade - born to new snows and a crescent moon, nighttime, beginning of winter: will be a warrior, thought to portend a long, proud, bloody life full of honorable deeds
Trouble - born in the heat of summer, in the middle of the day: potential to either burn out fast or have extreme resilience and outlive many peers
Tallys - born at dawn to the sounds of birds chirping: not much to be said, pretty normal circumstances, might have a tendency for wisdom and having clarity, but not particularly strong signs
Shery - born in spring on a rainy (but not stormy) day: destined to have a peaceful, quiet life, with likely a happy disposition
Riel - born on a fall day when the Polar Candle is clearly visible even during the day: destined to be blisteringly intelligent but shunned and misunderstood by peers
Chase - born under an autumn harvest moon: potential to have extremely good luck or grave misfortune
Red - born during the day, under the Dayspear constellation (Narthax): destined to be an agent of justice and firm with the lines between right and wrong, can be interpreted as being wise
Ayla - born at a blood-red dawn when the Pelinel constellation still visible in the sky: will have a fighter's life, full of hardship, violence, and survival, but will endure endlessly
Halek and Naolin - born under two blue moons with both moons at their fullest, twins: will lead a life of incredible change and destiny, once-in-a-lifetime occurrence, potential to become legends
Briony: - born in spring, morning, with the Tholjass constellation particularly bright throughout the night before: will be a strong fighter with an important social network - links to others are important, or blessed to be surrounded by important loved ones
Lavinet - born in spring, daytime, within a week of the first apple blossoms appearing: will be blessed with great charisma and charm
As you can see, some of these 'omens' fit, and others don't really! There are whole books that are devoted to figuring some of this stuff out, and a lot of it is sort of "pick-and-choose"--like you can conveniently be like "oh that constellation doesn't look THAT visible" if you don't like your baby's omen gfldggf--so it's not really taken that seriously except by superstitious people, particularly small, insular communities with strong ties to past pagan beliefs or ancestral cultures. In the modern day, and especially in big cities, it's not something that's really noted at a baby's birth unless you already believe in that sort of thing.
It's noteworthy that there are also a LOT of bad omens as well as just neutral/vague ones, and the bad omens tend to be more noticed than the good. So if it's like, "Hey, my baby was born in spring, she's gonna be super charismatic!!" it's like "oh! how cool!" But as soon as a baby is born under a blood moon, everyone in the neighborhood is like "YO. Wasn't Teko's kid coming today? The mom is already in labor?? She better hold it in or that baby is going to be destined to be INSANE or a MURDERER"
The baby's not going to be, like, shunned or actually treated poorly for their birth signs, but it will always be that bit of juicy gossip to be passed around in very insular communities, typically by neighborhood wives who want to shit-talk, but few actually like really believe it, if that makes any sense! "There goes Ylissa... Did you know her first was born under a blood moon? *sip tea*" "😲 you're lying..."
As for how each RO feels about these signs and omens, it's basically:
Blade: neutral/indifferent, does not believe in them but does not care or pay attention at all if others do
Trouble: neutral/indifferent, mildly interested when people talk about them, in the way that you ask each other what fortune cookie you got when you're at a restaurant together
Tallys: believes in them to a certain degree: like if someone's baby was born under a blood moon, she'd be like "hm. that's unfortunate" but she's not going to be like "NO. You can't be wise, you were born under the sign for stupidity!!!" In other words, she's not actively thinking about it much and it's more in a passing, shallow sense!
Shery: she like sort of believes in them, sort of doesn't? It's like a fun little icebreaker and she has cognitive bias to believe the ones that are more positive or seem to fit the person better, like wow Blade's seems pretty accurate! But she doesn't whole-heartedly believe in them in any concrete way!
Riel: despises them, especially his. He's smart because he worked to become smart, not because some stupid moon or whatever foretold it!!! stop taking credit for his decisions, moon!!!
Chase: DESPISES his, actively will not talk about it. automatically dislikes anyone who takes the birth signs even a little seriously. (joking about them is okay, but sincere belief is a turn-off for him)
Red: doesn't believe in them at all and thinks they're all coincidental/conveniently vague enough to fit, but doesn't begrudge others if they believe in them and generally won't try to argue with it. Doesn't think his is accurate like at all
Ayla: has literally never even heard of them or thought of them in any meaningful way
Briony: kind of indifferent, she doesn't really like hers very much (if she knows it), she's interested to hear what others are as a fun conversation starter or an insight into their personalities, but does not believe they actually dictate or foretell anything
Lavinet: thinks they're mostly just superstition and doesn't pay much attention to them, but she'd get a little bit nervous if her baby was born to like a really bad omen before laughing it off
Halek: hates his birth sign and blames it for his position in life (his was taken VERY seriously by the Reach). Dislikes talking about it and checks out when other people talk about theirs. Ironically, he's checked out so much that he's forgotten what his birth sign ACTUALLY is and tells MC "it had something to do with the new moon or something" in the game, which is just... wrong lol
Naolin: more respectful about the birth sign and pretty much believes in it, because it would be a super weird coincidence for the first twins born in the Reach in 100 years or whatever to also be born under two perfect blue moons...
Also, yes, there are lots of famous fairytales in the world of Blest! Ironically, most of them have to do with actual fairies (sometimes/mostly spelled faerie or the Faerie) rather than a lot of our prince/princess/monarch fairytales. Some also circulate around angels, deals with demons, djinn, and--especially as the canon of the One-God became more prevalent--a lot of folk stories about saints, like in a Joan of Arc mythologizing sense!
I could swear I did a write-up on common fairytales--no?? Did I dream that or something?? There was a fox, and berries... or... hm. Anyway, I'll have to go hunting for that, but I hope that answers your questions!

Having kids was never something you saw for yourself until you met Sam. Being truly happy with your life was never possible for you until you met Sam. You never saw having the things you have now until you met Sam. Everything happened when you met him, and you owe him your life--to try and pay back everything he gave to you. Ten years ago, if someone asked you what you would be doing with your life, it would certainly not be this.
Your eccentric five-year-old baby boy is full of life and is curious about everything. He has an eye for the good, to see what others can’t. When you found out you were pregnant, you refused to raise him the way John did with his boys. John shut his kids out unless he needed them, and even then, it was touch-and-go. Not with Dylan, no, you wanted to be different than the rest.
Dean has always said hunters aren't kids, but you’re doing a pretty damn good job at allowing your baby boy be a kid for as long as he can. He knows what’s out there because you decided to have the talk with him in the form of stories. Instead of just shoving him into the life and forcing him to deal with it like John did, you tell stories of vampires, djinns, angels, demons, and everything in between. With stories, you can show him it’s not that scary, and with hunter parents like Sam and Dean, it’s not.
The Bunker isn’t an ideal place to raise a child, but Dylan made sure to turn this place into his own personal playground. The two rooms you merged to make his playroom is just covered with toys. Whenever he had a birthday, Sam, Dean, and even Castiel would spoil him with lots of presents, so the Bunker is just littered with them.
You don’t mind much since it makes him so happy to get gifts. He’s not spoiled in a bad way--he always says please and thank you, and he is very grateful for what he gets. You don’t think you could have raised a better son, and there are still thirteen more years to go. You let Dylan play in his playroom after dinner, so when you enter the room to get him, a smile grows on your face.
He fell asleep while playing with the present Jack gave him--Marvelous Marvin the Talking Teddy. He also has one, and they play a lot together with them. You think it’s sweet how much your son grew to love Jack. They are close in age, so it makes sense that they would get along the best.
You walk over to your little man and pick him up gently, careful not to wake him up. His head rolls to rest on your chest, and you carry him to his room. He decorated it all on his own with the help of his father. There are stars and planets painted on the wall since he loves Toy Story and Buzz Lightyear and everything that has to do with space. You lay him in his bed and tuck him up, kissing him on the head when you’re finished.
Sam and Dean had just gotten back from a tough hunt, so to give your husband some time to settle into bed and go to sleep, you figured you would clean Dylan’s playroom first. If you were to go to bed now, and Sam was only half-asleep, he would wake as soon as you got into the bed. Years of being a hunter made him accustomed to being a light sleeper.
You tidy up Dylan’s playroom, putting the toys where they belong. Inside the room is a little table in the corner that is used for arts and crafts that he loves using. Today, him and Jack were painting some of the Toy Story characters. Your son’s paintings aren’t that great with Jack not that far behind him, but they had fun while doing it. You take the pictures and hang them in the designated spot that’s used to hang all the pictures that Dylan makes. Once they dry, he picks his favorite ones and you throw the rest of them away. The ones he picks go into a big photo album that he can look through when he’s older.
Once the room is cleaner, you head back to your shared room with Sam. You can hear his soft snores from his side of the bed, so you know he is fast asleep. You’re quiet as you change into your pajamas, and you slide into bed gently. Sam turns over so he's facing you, and in his sleep, he reaches out for you. You cuddle into his side, acting as the “little spoon”. His big arms wrap around your waist as his head buries itself into the crook of your neck.
If you could stay like this forever, you would. Immediately, you drift off to sleep knowing everyone inside the Bunker is safe and sound. You’re not sure when you wake up next, but you know it’s not morning. It’s not your alarm telling you that you two needed to get up to do your morning run. It’s not the smell of coffee coming from the kitchen that Jack loves to make since he barely sleeps. No, something much more innocent and vulnerable wakes you.
“Mommy,” Dylan whispers, shaking your shoulder.
“What is it, baby? Are you okay?” you whisper and turn on the lamp next to your bed on the lowest setting so it doesn’t wake Sam up.
“I had a nightmare.”
“Come here,” you say and pat the area between you and Sam.
Sam had managed to scoot as far as possible away from you during the night, so there is plenty of room for Dylan to crawl in without waking his father. He settles in next to you, and you push his long hair away from his face. He is growing more to look like Sam every single day. He refuses to cut his hair claiming he wants to look like Daddy.
“Tell me about your nightmare, sweetheart. Just don’t wake Daddy up.”
“Too late,” Sam grumbles and flips to face you two. “What’s going on?”
“Dylan had a nightmare. He was just going to tell me about it.”
“Alright, buddy, we’re all ears. We’re listening,” Sam yawns.
“I had a nightmare about you and Daddy. You were killed by a monster and you left me all alone,” Dylan sighs.
You look at Sam knowingly, and that little story causes him to become more alert. You’re not a hunter anymore--not since you found out you were pregnant. You’re a stay-at-home mom while Sam and Dean go out and fight the monsters. You help when you can from the Bunker, but you don’t go out anymore. This isn’t your department anymore, so Sam takes over. He grabs Dylan by the waist and plops him on his elated legs so that he’s resting his back on them.
“Listen, Dylan, your mom and I aren’t going to die. I know it’s scary, okay? Believe me, I was once your age thinking the same thing about my dad. It was scary for me not knowing if he was ever going to come home, but it doesn’t have to be like that for you. Your uncle and I will always make it home to you and your mom. You have Uncle Jack and Cas here to protect you. They’re angels, so if I’m ever hurt, they can fix me right up. You won’t ever have to be alone.”
“Your daddy’s right, baby. Monsters are scary, okay? Monsters can hurt a lot of people, but your daddy and your uncle go out and kill the bad people so that the good people can be happy. Just like in your stories,” you add with a smile.
“Okay,” he nods, believing every word you and Sam say.
“You want to show your mom what we’ve been working on?” Sam asks with a smile, and that seems to brighten up your son.
“Yeah!”
He and Sam have been working on a secret handshake that only the two of them know. It puts a smile on your face to know that your son has this to fall back on. When he’s scared or alone, he can think back to times like these to feel better. When they are done, Dylan squeals in happiness when Sam bear-hugs him.
“That’s pretty cool,” you beam.
“Are you feeling much better?”
“Yes, Daddy,” Dylan smiles widely.
“Do you want to sleep in here with us?” you ask.
Dylan nods, and Sam puts him back where he was before. Dylan snuggles underneath the blanket and passes the fuck out. When you know he is fast asleep, you look at Sam with a loving smile.
“We did a good job with this one,” you say.
“We should have another one,” Sam whispers.
“I’d love nothing more.”
You lean closer to him and rub your nose against him to give him some Eskimo kisses before kissing him on the lips. It’s slow and sensual, but nothing short of loving. You pull away and cuddle into him with Dylan in between you two.
Your perfect little family all wrapped up in a perfect little bow.

Oh, take your time, don’t live to fast
Troubles will come and they will pass
He had slept through an alarm he didn’t remember setting. It wasn’t until he heard the creaking of the door that he stirred, reaching under his pillow for his knife. But it wasn’t there. Dean panicked as footsteps crept towards him. They were nothing more than a small pitter-patter on the wood floor, but he still prepared himself for the attack. The small creature leapt on top of him and he rolled over so he was pinning it beneath him. It giggled. It giggled?
“Daddy, Mom said she needs you in the kitchen.”
Dean leaned over to the night stand and turned on the lamp. A little green eyed girl squirmed out from underneath him and skipped out of the room.
“The hell…” Dean muttered. He opened the dresser and sure enough, his clothes sat in the drawers. He put on a T-shirt and slowly walked out of the room. The smell of bacon and coffee coaxed him to the kitchen. He couldn’t believe what he saw.
You were standing over the stove, trying to save the bacon from burning. Dean was just frozen in the doorway. Finally spotting him, you made your way over to him, which was difficult with the little boy clinging to your leg.
“Thank God you’re up. I need you to finish making breakfast.” You lifted the boy into your arms. “Eric’s got a fever and Ellie is going to wake up any second needing to be fed.” You gently laid a hand on Eric’s forehead. “I’ll call the doctor as soon as I get him to lay down. But you know how impossible that is.”
“But I’m not tired.” Eric whined.
“I know, sweetie, but you don’t want to get sicker, do you?” He pouted his lip and shook his head. “Alright, so I need you to go back to bed.” You looked back at Dean. “Can you just finish the bacon? I’ll be back to make their toast.”
Before Dean could speak, you rushed up the stairs. As if on queue, a baby started to cry from somewhere upstairs. Dean just stood in shock. What the hell was going on?
As if by second nature, he walked around the kitchen, grabbing a paper towel to let the bacon drain off the grease. It felt almost natural. He somehow knew where everything was, even though he had never been here. Or had he? His brain was fuzzy with thoughts he couldn't remember. He saw images flash in his mind. Sam graduating from Stanford. His parents celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary. You… in a wedding dress.
“Johanna Charlotte Winchester you better be ready for school or your dad’s going to come and get you!” You yelled, coming back into the kitchen, this time a wailing baby in your arms. It wasn’t until now that Dean noticed you were wearing a sheriff’s uniform. You snatched up a piece of bacon and popped it in your mouth. “Thank you.”
You bounced the baby in your arms, trying to calm her down, but she wasn’t having it. The green eyed little girl from early came bounding into the room with her backpack over one shoulder. Ellie continued to bawl.
“Can you hold her? She always stops crying when you hold her.” You handed the squirming child to him and he tried not to panic. You noticed your husband’s awkwardness. “Rough morning?” You snickered. “Here, I’ll make you some coffee.”
As the child in his arms slowly stopped her crying, more memories flooded Dean’s head. You telling him you were pregnant for the first time. Going to the emergency room for the birth of his son. Watching Johanna hold her new baby sister. They all felt like dreams, but then how was this all real?
“I’m feeling a little... off this morning.” He admitted, watching you carefully as if he were waiting for horns to sprout from your forehead. Your face fell.
“Oh god, please don’t tell me you’re sick too.” You put your hand on his forehead. “You’re picking everyone up from the airport today.”
“Everyone?” Dean’s brows furrowed curiously.
“I would go get them, but I’m at the station until five.” You sighed, moving your hand down to caress his cheek. “Besides, you’ve been dying to see your brother since the Fourth of July.”
“Uncle Sam!” Jo exclaimed excitedly.
“Sammy’s coming?” Dean asked. Finally, something familiar. Your face contorted with confusion.
“Of course he’s coming. Jessica and the kids are too. They always help prepare for tomorrow and since your parents will still be out on their cruise, we’ll need all the help we can get.”
“Tomorrow...” He spotted the calendar on the wall, but you answered first.
“Thanksgiving.” You stated. Your confusion changed to concern. “Are you sure you’re okay? Do you want me to stay home?” Jo raised her hand.
“Can I stay home too?”
“Sweetheart, it’s just one more half-day of school before break and then you’ll get to play with your cousins for the rest of the week.” Seeing you start to get stressed, Dean put a hand on your shoulder.
“You go to work. I’m fine.” He assured you. “I’ll hold down the fort and I’ll pick up Sam at- what time again?”
“3:00.” You pressed a kiss to his cheek and smiled. “I know you worked extra last week so you could have the garage closed for Thanksgiving, but I think the fumes might have gone to your head.” You grabbed the keys off the counter. “Oh, and I’ll be taking Baby to work since you’ll need the van to fit everyone.” His look of displeasure made you laugh. “I know, I know, but you’ll have to suck it up for today unless you think the four-year-old can babysit.”
You kiss Ellie on the forehead before giving Dean a quick, but passionate kiss on the lips. You held out your hand for your daughter to take.
“Alright, partner, let’s go.”
The two of you leave and Dean looks down at the baby in his arms. Was this really happening?

Boy don’t you worry, you’ll find yourself
Follow your heart and nothing else
If he was trapped by a djinn, he would have remembered fighting it. This was something else. The more time he spent in the house, the more this world felt real and his hunting life felt like dreams. Maybe… maybe this was real.
He remembered everything now. He had met you in a bar on New Years Eve. You hit it off talking about cars and classic rock. He proposed about two years later outside that same bar during the first snow of the season. You always said the first snow was the best one. You got married and a couple months later found out you were pregnant with Jo. Johanna Charlotte Winchester was born on April 3, 2007. She was seven. Three years later, Eric Samuel was born on November 29th. He was four. Lastly, Ellen Sandra was born six months ago tomorrow on May 27, 2014.
Sammy had a family of his own. He married Jessica right out of law school and the two had two boys; Josh, 8, and Michael, 6. Their families stayed close, even though Sam was in California and Dean in Kansas. They were happy.
If this wasn’t real, how could he remember all that?
3:00 rolled around and Eric’s fever had gone down. He called you to make sure it would be okay to take him along to the airport. You told him that as long as he was feeling okay, it should be fine. The doctor said it sounded like the heat in his room was too high. Dean buckled Eric into his carseat and Ellie in her carrier. While Johanna almost looked like a mini-girl version of him, Eric looked like you. His eyes were yours, along with his hair color and his nose. Ellie looked like a fair mix of both.
Jessica was the first one to greet him since Sam was busy carrying the boys’ bags. He hugged her tight and couldn’t stop beaming.
“It’s so good to see you guys.” He smiled and she gave him a sunny grin in return.
“I know Sam’s been eager to see you and the family for a long time. Of course, I’m only here for the food.” She teased and he pulled her into another hug.
“I can’t believe this.” Dean sighed happily. Sam and Jessica. Him and you. One big happy family.
“Do I get a hug, or are just going to hog my wife?” Sam snarked, setting down the bags as Dean nearly tackled him. Sam laughed, struggling to breathe in his brother’s crushing hug. “I missed you too, Dean.”
“Uncle Sam!” Eric cheered, clinging to Sam’s leg.
“Hey buddy.” Sam smiled, lifting his nephew into his arms. Jessica peaked into the baby carrier Dean had set on the bench.
“Look at how big she’s gotten.” She awed. Ellie was asleep, so she spoke quietly. Jess frowned, finally noticing the two brown haired boys fighting over one of their comics. “Josh, stop pushing your brother.” She scolded.
“He took my comic!” The older of the two retorted. Jessica just gave him a stern look and he surrendered.
“Michael, give it back when you’re done reading.” Sam ruffled his youngest son’s hair. Dean knelt down.
“So are you two tough guys too cool to give your uncle a hug, or what?” He pulled his nephews into a warm embrace. “Are you both taller? You’re taller than the last time I saw you.” Dean pat Josh on the back. “You’re gonna be taller than your dad before you know it.”
“You know, you’d see them more if you flew out to California.” Jessica noted. Dean’s eyes widened. She laughed. “I know, I know, you have a thing about flying.”
“I want to go to California!” Eric exclaimed.
“One of these days, we can go on a roadtrip in Baby to Uncle Sam and Aunt Jessica’s, how does that sound?” Dean promised. Eric nodded, excitedly wriggling in Sam’s arms.
Everyone loaded up into the van, Sam sliding into the passenger seat. Dean had to laugh. This was just so crazy. Here they were, driving in a van packed full of children. Their children. He thought of all of the times Sam sat beside him in the impala, the two weary from a hunt. It felt like a different lifetime. Like a different world. It felt less real.
-
You’ll find a woman and you’ll find love
And don’t forget son, there is someone up above
Four children ran around the backyard, jumping in leaf piles and chasing each other with sticks. Jo seemed to rule the yard, keeping her older cousin at bay with her stubborn persistence. Dean smiled proudly.
“She’s quite the pistol.” Jessica noted with a laugh, jutting her head towards Johanna. She was sitting beside you, bouncing her baby niece in her arms.
“I wonder where she gets that from.” You gave your husband a smirk. He wrapped an arm around your shoulders and pulled you closer, pressing a kiss to your temple.
“I love you so much.” He whispered. The tone in his voice made you glance up at him. He was watching you with intensity in his eyes. So much love and yet… there was pain there.
“I love you too.” You laced your fingers with his, your concern evident in your voice. “Dean, are you okay? You’ve been acting a little weird all day.” You spoke quietly so you wouldn’t worry your brother-in-law. Your husband gave your hand a gentle squeeze.
“I’m fine, really. I’m just…”  Dean felt an overwhelming wave of emotion and choked back tears. “Really happy.” He lifted your chin up, bringing your lips to his. Everything was perfect, right down to the way your lips fit perfectly against his. He knew, without a doubt, that this was real.
Soon it was time to put the kids to bed. Sam’s boys slept on the pull-out couch in the basement. Eric was exhausted from a day of excitement, as well as his baby sister. Dean was charged with the task of putting a rambunctious Johanna to bed.
“I want to stay up and drink beer like a big kid.” She pouted, making the adults in the room chuckle. Dean crouched down and picked her up.
“Alright, here’s the deal. I promise that when you’re a big kid like me and your mom, then you can stay up and have a drink with us. But until then, you’re gonna be my little deputy right?” He tapped the golden plastic badge that she never took off. Jo grinned from ear to ear and nodded. Humming a Bob Segar tune, he took her upstairs to her room and tucked her into bed.
When he came back down stairs, his brother and the two women were smirking at him.
“What?” You and Jessica exchanged a look and burst out laughing. “Come on, what?”
“That girl has you wrapped around her finger, Dean.” Jessica snickered. You took a sip of your beer.
“Oh, he’s like that with Ellie, too. He dotes on them like you wouldn’t believe. One little pout from Johanna and he melts.” You couldn’t help but beam at your husband. You loved the way he was with the kids.
“I got her in bed, didn’t I?” Dean huffed, taking his seat beside you and resting a hand on your knee. Sam shook his head.
“It’s all in the looks, brother. You may think you’ve one this round, but I saw the look in Jo’s eyes.” Sam gave his brother a sure nod. “She knows where she stands.”
“At least I’ve got Eric,” You sighed teasingly. “He’s a mama's boy, through and through.”
You curled up beside Dean, comfortable in his warmth. He kissed the top of your head.
The hours passed with plenty of laughter and love. Soon, it was getting close to 11:00 and you wanted to get plenty of rest for the busy day tomorrow. Everyone would be helping prepare the massive Thanksgiving meal that the Winchesters made every year. Sam and Jessica said goodnight and headed to the guest room while you and Dean made your way upstairs.
You reached your rooms and Dean’s hands found your waist, his lips trailing up your shoulder to your neck. You leaned back into his embrace, bringing your hand up to tangle your fingers in his golden-brown hair. His hands started to wander and you sighed mournfully.
“Baby, we both have to be up in the morning.” You groaned, breaking away from him. When you turned around, he was pouting, his green eyes big and sad. So that’s where Johanna got it. He was just so impossible to resist, but if you didn’t go to bed now, you’d be exhausted before dinner even started. You draped your arms around his neck. “I’ll tell you what; how about we get a good night’s sleep tonight…” you pulled him close and whispered into his ear, “and I’ll give you something to be really thankful for tomorrow.”
Dean’s eyes widened and his smirk spread into a smile.
“Mrs. Winchester, we have a deal.” He loved the way that sounded coming from his lips. Mrs. Winchester.
You gave him a long and passionate goodnight kiss before changing into your pajamas and climbing into bed.
It must have been around 12:30 when the baby started crying. The baby monitor was on your nightstand, so you were awakened by the sound first. Dean moved to get up, but you stopped him.
“I’ll get her.” You sleepily shuffled out of the bedroom. Reaching the hall, you muttered something that your half-asleep husband only half comprehended. Something about the electricity acting up again.
The crying continued and you didn’t return. Dean yawned, rubbing the tiredness from his eyes and got out of bed. He slowly made his way down the hallway to the nursery. The door was ajar and the lamp had been turned on. You must have gone downstairs to get her a bottle.
Dean picked up his crying daughter, rocking her soothingly in his arms. She wailed and wailed until she heard his voice.
“Alright, sweetheart. It’s alright. Daddy’s got you.” He hushed. After a moment of rocking and soft whispers, Ellie started to settle down. As soon as her cries reduced to the occasional sniff, Dean set her back in her cradle. “That’s it. You’re going to be just fine. I’m not gonna let anything hurt you.”
Smiling down at his beautiful baby girl, Dean felt something on the back of his neck. When he touched it, his hand came away red. He froze, and as if his body went into auto pilot, he turned around. At first he couldn’t scream. He just stared.
Your mouth gaped at him, your eyes filled with terror and pain as the blood spread out from your stomach. Ellie started to cry again.
“No!” Dean screamed. That’s when the fire started.
And that’s when he woke up.
-
And be a simple kind of man
Oh, be something you love and understand
Dean sat straight up, sweat soaking through his t-shirt, his scream still on his lips. The cool air of the bunker made him shiver. He couldn’t breathe. He heaved and coughed as if the smoke really filled his lungs. A sudden hand on his shoulder made him jump out of the bed and flatten himself against the wall, holding out his fists to fight.
“Dean?” You rose slowly, walking towards him cautiously. “It’s okay. It was just a dream. You’re okay.”
He just stared at you, taking in every feature. You watched his eyes fill with tears and his chin tremble as he tried to speak. Nothing came out, just a strangled sounding cry. Dean fell to his knees and you rushed to hold him. Whatever it was, it wasn’t just a nightmare.
Dean wrapped his arms around your middle and leaned his head against your stomach as you soothingly ran your fingers through his hair. He didn’t make any sound as he cried, but the tears fell endlessly down his face. He was shaking in your arms.
“Dean, honey, what’s wrong? You’re scaring me.” You whispered. This wasn’t the first time that he’d woken suddenly from a dream, but it had never been like this.
You told him that you were pregnant today. He seemed happy. Shocked, but happy. But now? Whatever was going through his head was breaking him. You sunk down in front of him so you could hold him fully, letting him cry into your shoulder.
“I’m sorry.” He finally choked out. “I’m sorry that this is all I can give you. I’m sorry that we don’t have a big house full of kids. That Sam has lost any chance at happiness. That we can never have a normal life.” You pushed back.
“Baby, what are you talking about?”
“I’m sorry that this baby is going to grow up haunted and broken… just like me.” His voice cracked. You put a hand on his cheek.
“Dean…” You pressed your forehead against his, feeling your own tears start to fall. “This baby is going to be loved and wanted and cherished, just like you.” You kissed him gently, reminding him of your adoration of this hero of a man.
Dean held you closer, letting your words sink into his heart. He wanted to believe it. He wanted more than anything to believe it. Even in his beautiful dream, you ended up burned and bloody. Even in his dream, he was broken.
But that didn’t mean he wouldn’t try. He would try like hell to give you a life as close to perfect as he could manage. Maybe that meant hunting together until you went down guns blazing. Maybe that meant settling down, someday, somewhere. He would try.
Baby be a simple kind of man
Oh, won’t you do this for me, son, if you can

Dean’s P.O.V. ~ 2010, Lawrence, Kansas
Humming the words to Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynyrd, I slowly climb out of Baby, my 1967 Chevy Impala, passed down to me from my dad when I got married to Y/N four years ago, after we’d been dating and engaged for a little over a year. Mom and dad were so happy when I finally settled down. Sammy had been off at Stanford for a couple years, and getting close with his own girl, Jess, when I met Y/N.
She and I had hit it off the moment she walked into my mechanic shop, trying her best not to freak out about the fact that her car had pretty much just died on her. Since it was a newer car, a 2003 Honda Civic, I wasn’t entirely sure I’d know what to do to fix it. My specialty lies in fixing up classic cars, always has been, ever since I was old enough to help my dad work on Baby.
At the time Y/N walked into my shop, I’d only recently been learning how to work on the newer style cars. Despite my hesitancy at being able to fix her car, the look on her face, the distraught, the panic...it just tugged at something inside me, and I knew I’d do whatever it took to fix her car for her.
Only, I wasn’t able to. The car was beyond repair. Even my adopted Uncle Bobby couldn’t fix it, and he can fix almost anything. So, after he and I towed Y/N’s car to his salvage yard, and I made it back to my shop, I offered Y/N a ride to wherever it was she needed to go in town. It was a quick trip to the diner to get her some to-go food before I dropped her off at one of the town’s motels.
That was when I learned she was new in town. That she had just moved here from a small town in the New England area. Just before she got out of the Impala, since Dad let me drive it today, I gave Y/N my number and told her to give me a call tomorrow, and I’d take her up to Uncle Bobby’s salvage yard and see if we could find her a new car that would actually work.
It didn’t take long after finding her a new car, a 69 Dodge Charger, that Uncle Bobby had on the back part of his lot, that Y/N and I started dating. Six months after we got together, I popped the question, to which she said yes, and not even six months after that, a year to the day we met, Y/N and got married in a small, intimate ceremony.
She and I moved into this cute little, 4 bedroom, 2 bath farmhouse with a yard big enough for our two Golden Retrievers, Zep and Cash, and our bluetick hound, Lenny. We wanted a place big enough for if our family, well mom, dad, Sammy and Jess, came over and stayed the night or something. And, we also wanted it to be big enough for when we started to grow our own family.
When we first moved in, there wasn’t a fence around our yard, but after a weekend and some help from dad and Uncle Bobby, I had one up, and could let the dogs run around freely. As I close the driver’s door, and step away from Baby, Lenny comes running over from his spot on the porch, and jumps up, putting his front paws against my chest.
I laugh as I pet him. “Hi, boy! I missed you too!”
He barks happily, his tail wagging. I chuckle and gently push him off me and keep walking to the porch. Lenny bounds along behind me, happy that I’m home. I pet his head again before opening the front door, kicking my boots off, and stepping inside.
“Honey? I’m home!” I call, setting my keys on the hook by the door.
“In the kitchen!” I hear my wife call out.
I smile to myself. My wife. After four years of being married, the thought of being married to Y/N still has me grinning like a fool. I pad across the hardwood floor in my grey socks, making my way to the kitchen. Pausing in the doorway, and leaning against the frame, I tuck my hands in my pockets and smile even more at the sight in front of me.
Y/N dances in the kitchen, our little girl, MaryJo in her arms, as she sings our song and bakes something. My stomach growls as the smell of an apple pie in the oven wafts across the room to me. I smile and push myself up off the door frame before walking over to my little family. I place a kiss on Y/N’s cheek, making her jump a little but giggle as she smiles up at me.
“How was work, sweetie?” She asks, moving MaryJo slightly.
I smile as I lean down to kiss our four month old daughter’s head, earning a giggle in response. I lean against the counter, and look at my beautiful wife, taking in the sight of her in my shirt.
“It was good. Extra slow so I was just fixing a car from Bobby’s salvage yard.” I say, grinning.
She giggles. “Is that why you look like you went four rounds with an oil bucket and it won?”
I laugh and look down at my oil stained t-shirt. “I suppose so, baby. You know those old things are covered in so much dirt, grime, and Chuck knows what else.”
She giggles. “That’s fair. Mine definitely was.”
“Mmm. She was. But she’s all clean, and running smoothly now!”
“Thanks to my amazing husband.” She whispers, leaning up to kiss me softly.
I grin as she pulls away. “Mm. Your amazing husband? Hmm. He sounds like a pretty cool dude.”
“Oh, he is! And he’s a sweetheart and an even better father.”
I smile. “Yeah?”
“Oh yeah! See, our daughter, she just loves him to pieces, and has him wrapped around her finger.”
Chuckling, I sneak a glance down at MaryJo, and wink when I see her staring up at me with an adorable, gum-filled smile. She squeals and wiggles in her mama’s arms, making her laugh softly and rub her cheek with my thumb.
“Well, it’s a good thing her daddy loves her to pieces too.” I say, looking back at my wife.
Y/N giggles and nods. I smile and watch her cook.
“How was your day? You girls do anything fun?” I ask.
“Oh, definitely! Let’s see...we napped...mommy did some work while MaryJo napped again after lunch. Um...oh, she got a bath. Then we snuggled and watched Ice Age. After another nap for Princess, and more work for mommy, we decided to bake a pie for when daddy got home.”
I smile. “Sounds like an amazing day! Work’s still letting you work from home? Not still pressuring you to get back to the office?”
Y/N smiles and shakes her head. “Nope! Luckily I can still do whatever I need to from the house. Although, I have to go in one day next week, to turn in the case files I have here and pick up some new ones.”
“Sounds like a plan, baby. Let me know, and I’ll take the day off from the shop, and stay home with our Princess here.”
She smiles up at me. “Maybe Wednesday?”
“Sounds good to me, baby.” I smile, leaning down to kiss her head. “I’m gonna go get cleaned up and come help you finish cooking, yeah?”
“Go get cleaned up, but don’t worry about helping. Dinner’s almost done. And it’s a surprise.”
I chuckle. “Yes, ma’am!”
I give her another gentle kiss before bending down and kissing my little girl’s head, getting another giggle as I do. I smile and make my way out of the kitchen as the front door opens, causing me to look up.
“Sammy? What are you doing here, brother? I thought you weren’t due to come into town for another couple weeks.” I say, confused, as my younger brother steps inside, looking a little panicked.
“Dean!” He exclaims, rushing over to me, and pulling me into his arms. “C’mon, man. We gotta get you outta here!”
I push him back a little, even more confused. “What do you mean, Sam? I just got home? And Y/N’s cooking dinner.”
“Y/N’s here? Dean! It’s a trap. It’s not real!”
I glare at my brother. “My wife and daughter are real, Sam! They’re just as real as you and I! And so is mom, dad, and Jess!”
Sam sighs. “Dean. Mom died when you were 4. Jess died while I was still at Stanford, right after dad went missing. That’s why I got back into hunting. And, dad...Dean, sold his soul to Yellow Eyes to save you after the car wreck. You know this. Now, c’mon. We gotta get you outta here before the Djinn comes back.”
I stare at my brother like he’s grown a second head.
Tumblr media
Suddenly, everything goes black for a second as I blink and when I open my eyes again, I’m no longer in the farmhouse with Y/N and my daughter. Instead, I’m in an old warehouse, leaning against Sam.
“Sam?” I croak out, my throat dry.
“I’ve got you, Dean. Don’t worry. We’re gonna get you outta here. We gotta hurry. The Djinn’s gonna come back soon though.” My brother replies, holding me up.
At the sound of a growl, he and I both look. A Djinn comes running at us. I pull away from Sam, knowing that neither of us will be able to properly fight with my leaning against him. It doesn’t take long for us to destroy the Djinn, even with my weakened, still slightly drugged state. Sam helps me back to the Impala.
For once, I don’t oppose and argue as Sam holds his hand out for the keys. I toss them to him and slide into the passenger side of Baby. Sam gets in and cranks the engine.
“Burgers before we go back to the hotel?” Sam asks.
“No.” I mumble.
“No? Dean? Are you okay? Passing up a burger.”
“No. I need to see Y/N first. I have to tell her something.”
Sam nods. “Alright. Well, she’s at the motel room, waiting. So, we’ll get burgers and go back there.”
I nod and look out the window. Everything that happened while I was in the dream state from the Djinn’s poison floats through my head. And, I want something that every Hunter wants but rarely gets. A family. A shot at a normal life. And, I want it with Y/N. Even though I’ve been denying myself that for the last first years since I came across her on a hunt, I still want it.
And after that dream, the one that felt like reality, I want it even more. There’s no more denying, no more hiding, no more lying about the way I feel about Y/N. And I have to tell her. By the time Sam makes it back to the motel room, I’ve scarfed down one of the four burgers he got for me, and start feeling like myself again.
The moment he parks Baby, I’m out of the car and rushing into the motel. I bust into the room so quickly that Y/N nearly falls off the bed from jumping sky high. Hurrying over to her, I help her get steady on the bed again as I kneel in front of her. Taking her hands in mine, I look up at her.
“I’ve tried denying it. Tried hiding it. Tried lying about it. But I can’t do it anymore.” I start.
She looks at me confused. “Dean? What’s going on? Are you ok?”
I nod. “I will be. I just gotta tell you something.”
“Okay?”
I take a deep breath. “I love you, Y/N. And, I know this life, being a Hunter, ain’t exactly the easiest one to live when you love something. But, something happened and I realized I couldn’t fight it anymore. I had to tell you. Had to at least try. I love you. And, I want a shot at normal, or at least as normal as we can get. You. Me. A kid. Or four. I don’t care. I just want you. By my side. I got a brief taste of it, even if it wasn’t real and I crave it.”
Y/N’s eyes go wide and she opens and closes her mouth a few times. “You...you love me? THE Dean Winchester loves me?”
I nod, not taking my eyes off her as I swallow deeply. “I do. And I want the Apple Pie Life with you, Y/N.”
Before I can get another word out, to tell her that it’s okay if she doesn’t want to say it now, or ever, she pulls her hands from mine and cups my cheeks and leans forward, pressing her lips to mine. I smile into the kiss and lean up towards her a little more, deepening it just a little, putting all of  my no longer hidden or denied love into it.
As we kiss, something I’ve never felt before, a shock of purely happy energy courses through my body. When we slowly pull back, she rests her forehead against mine, keeping her hands on my cheeks.
“It’s ‘bout damn time you said that, Winchester. Only took you four years.” She whispers. “I was beginning to give up on ever hearing you say that, and the chance for me to say it back.”
“Say it back?” I whisper.
She giggles. “Such a bull-headed man sometimes, Winchester. Yes. Say it back. I love you too.”
I grin from ear to ear and kiss her again. Pie has always been my favorite thing in life, and I want the Apple Pie Life. I need it. And, I need the Apple Pie Life with Y/N.

John Winchester SPN Meta
I’m about to argue that John Winchester was suicidal so if that’s not a topic you can engage with safely please don't risk it.
TW: Suicide, grief, mental illness
The way I interpret John Winchester, his obsession with hunting YED is less of a quest and more of a coping mechanism. The same is true of his need to protect his boys, especially Sam. John Winchester seems to me like a man who is dangerously depressed and has been since his wife died and their house burnt down leaving him homeless and raising two young boys while living out of his car. Oh and also monsters are real. And all that while dealing with whatever he saw in Vietnam.
[Okay so this post got really long and it involves content that requires a trigger warning so I put the rest of it under the cut.]
John Winchester was raised by his mom from a young age after his dad, Henry Winchester, walked out on them with no explanation. He’s been the “man of the household” since he was a child. When describing John to a time traveling Dean, Mary says “He’s sweet, kind. Even after the war, after everything, he still believes in happily ever after, you know? He’s everything a hunter isn’t.”
And yet so often I see interpretations of the character that match a lot more closely with Samuel Campbell than anything we saw from John.
Yes, John screwed up as a dad and his kids deserved better. But I’d argue he knows that too and just can’t let himself think about it. This is clearly a man holding on by the skin of his teeth. The two things that have kept him going all these years are the need to protect his kids and kill the thing that killed Mary. If he stops going for even one second, he’s afraid he’ll fall apart.
When he’s crashing on Missouri Mosely’s sofa at the tail end of 1x09 Home, the man clearly has some of the same mental health issues we’ll see from Dean in later seasons. (I’d argue Dean’s successful crossroads deal is symbolically similar to enlisting, with Hell functioning as a pretty good metaphor for war in the earlier seasons. But there’s also that self sacrificial death wish there. The later example with the Ma'lak box is more clearcut.)
This is the scene:
[CUT TO: INT. – MISSOURI’S HOUSE. MISSOURI comes inside and sets her purse on the table.]
MISSOURI: That boy…he has such powerful abilities. But why he couldn’t sense his own father, I have no idea. [The camera pans over to her couch, where JOHN WINCHESTER is sitting.]
JOHN: Mary’s spirit –- do you really think she saved the boys?
MISSOURI: I do. [JOHN nods sadly and twists his wedding ring on his finger.] John Winchester, I could just slap you. Why won’t you go talk to your children?
JOHN: [tearfully] I want to. You have no idea how much I wanna see ‘em. But I can’t. Not yet. Not until I know the truth. [They share a look. The screen fades to black.]
I tried to make a list of all the moments in season 1 and the first episode of season 2 that show John is a suicide risk but I couldn’t because I ended up with literally every moment he’s on screen.
He literally begs Sam to shoot him at one point.
This man needs help and at any time he could have stopped this quest for revenge and reached out to Bobby and I’m sure Bobby would have helped him get some actual real help. But he doesn’t. And he hasn’t. Not since he tried to talk to his coworker at the garage about what happened to Mary.
I think he was afraid his kids would be taken away if he admitted to needing help.
And at the end of Season 1, his boys are on the way to get that help when the truck smashes into them.  (And like, if it had been a one season show I could accept that ending. A rusty nail after 15 seasons is a very different story.)
Okay so I’ve gotten a little off track but I’d like to return to a previous point of mine. I think the primary thing that keeps him going is telling himself that his boys still need him. I think that’s the real reason he freaks out so bad when Sam goes away to college. I think a lot of Dean’s problems were John’s problems first that Dean learned by example. But I certainly don’t think they were necessarily all intentional lessons.
Dean’s story is one of learning not to make the same mistakes his dad did. Up to and including trying to defeat the big bad by sacrificing himself.
John wronged his children by making that deal with Azazel. It leads to Dean making a crossroads deal and spending 40 years in hell, Sam getting locked in the cage with Lucifer and so much more suffering. Not to mention Sam had to find him like that. No, screw that. We’ll later learn that there are so many other ways of bringing people back there’s no reason he had to make a deal with Azazel. He could have taken the same crossroads deal as anyone else but John wanted to die and that makes him an asshole.
It’s not that John deserves to die because he’s a terrible father.
John is a terrible father because he believed he deserved to die and didn’t seek out the support he needed.
And I am so proud of Dean for not repeating John’s mistakes. He doesn’t buy into the idea that dying to the Djinn in What Never Was and Never Should Be is an acceptable outcome. He refuses to play his part in the apocalypse. He shows up on Lisa’s doorstep at the end of season 5 because he knows it’s too dangerous fro him to be alone after losing Sam. He kills Death and yeah sure now he has to face the Darkness but he’s alive and once he works through it Amara is actually really cool.
For all John’s failings, he managed to raise his kid to be better than he was but he’s still a f*cking asshole for not working through his own shit and for dying like that.

so, in light of recent events, people have been discussing when they think Dean and Cas realized that they were in love with each other. While I 100% believe dean realized in purgatory, I dont think Castiel realized until Dean broke Naomi's connection.
BUT!!!!
I also think that is around the same time Sam realized it too. Obviously Charlie already knew ( " what about Castiel, he seems helpful and..Dreamy" she's a lesbian. That comment wasn't for Her!") I think Charlie was the one to point it out to sam and I think the two of them agreed to keep it to themselves since neither of those two would have been able to handle that information. So, I wrote a little thing about how I think it went down.
I also wanted to give myself an explanation for those wierd looks and mystery note from the end of the episode...so yeah...here's that.
Sam hobbled down the hall to the guest room, his hand still throbbing from knocking Dean unconcious . It was…worrisome, to say the least, that he was having this much trouble with healing from such a minor injury, not to mention the other things that were happening to his body; the fatigue, coughing up blood. Troubling, but, as much as he hated to admit it, worth it. Dean had been pissing him off more than usual lately anyway. It wasn't just the trials. Sure, he was frustrated with Dean for thinking he wasn't strong enough to handle them (he had fought against Lucifer in his own mind for christ's sake) but it was everything else too. His loyalty to Benny still didn't sit right with him. He had been so quick to kill Amy, just because she was a monster. He didn't care that she was just feeding her kid. She was just a monster to him. But for some reason, Benny got a pass. Sure, the guy saved both their asses, he was grateful for that, but even Bobby knew it was wrong.
And then there was Cas.

Sam wanted nothing more, than to tell Dean that he should have learned his lesson the first time with the Angel. It wasn't like he didn't like Castiel. Of course he did. He was appreciative of everything the guy had done for them. Dean was right that he had saved their asses more than once. It was just….at the end of the day, whether they liked him or not, Castiel had betrayed them. He understood that perfectly. What he couldn't understand, was why dean was so suprised by him doing it again. Hell, Dean had been the one to bring up that fact that the guy wasn't acting right since he got back and yet, there he was, praying to him, putting his trust in him again. It was maddening, to say the least. He had tried to talk to his brother about it, but Dean immediately shut down.
So, yeah, his hand was still hurting, but it was damn worth it.
He turned the corner to find Charlie stuffing her things into her duffle. He knocked on the door frame with his uninjured hand. "Hey, there."
"Sam." She half smiled, when she turned around, her eyes still a little bleary from crying. "Hi, I'm just…just packing up to head out and…" she sniffled and plopped down on the bed, covering her face as she began crying anew.
Sam walked into the room and pulled up the desk chair, sitting down in front of her. "Dean told me what happened, while you two were under." He said. "I am so sorry about your mom, Charlie." He placed his hand on her shoulder as she began crying harder. "I know how hard it is to let go like that…"
"Dean was right," she sniffed. "I needed to stop holding on."
Sam let out a bitter scoff and pulled his hand back, squeezing both hands between his legs. "Yeah, Dean's always right, isn't he? Too bad he can't follow his own advice."
Charlie looked up, her eyes sad and confused. "Holding on to my mom was the reason I was stuck there. If he hadn't made me let go, I would have died.we both would have."
Sam shook his head at himself, trying his damndest to let go of his own bitterness to be there for his friend. "Ya, I know. I'm sorry…just…I know you're hurting right now, I just want you to know I'm here for you."
Charlie sniffed again, wiping her arm across her face to dry it before leaning back and staring at Sam. "I don't get it." She said, as firmly as possible.
Sam, leaned back and shrugged. "Me neither, really. I always thought all djinn fed off happiness. It's like every time we figure stuff out, something new comes along to throw us off our game."
"Not that." Charlie said, waving his statement off. Sam looked at her, confused, not sure what she was referring to. She took a breath and pulled a book out of her duffle throwing it on Sam's lap. 'Mystery Spot' By Carver Edlund. "You say these books happened in real life. That everything written in them actually went down…but the past two times I've been around you guys…you certainly dont act like you do in the books."
Sam skimmed the first page of the book and chuckled, tossing it back on the bed next to Charlie. "Yeah, well, things have just been different, I guess."
"So, you used to love and support each other, no matter what and now you just, what? Stopped?" She asked.
"It's…" Sam scoffed and shook his head. "things are just, more complicated now…"
"You maybe, wanna elaborate there buddy?" She asked. "I may be a genius, but a mind reader, I am not."
Sam let out a breath and scrubbed a hand through his hair. He figured it might feel better to at least get something off his chest. "To be honest Charlie, I dont think Dean is cut out for the job anymore."
"Why not?"
"His judgment, for one thing." Sam answered. "I don't know, just ever since he got back from purgatory… he's been…it's like he can't think straight anymore. He used to be no nonsense when it came to killing monsters and only trusting people he knew he could trust and now… I mean, I get it. Purgatory was rough on him, but the guy has literally been to Hell and back. I don't see why this time is any different."
"What do you mean?" Charlie asked softly.
"I mean like, being friends with a freaking vamp." Sam answered, coldly. "Yeah, Benny wasn't like the others, and I get the whole 'brother's in arms' aspect, but it still doesn't make sense." He waved his hand, gesturing back at the book before letting it drop. "That Dean? That Dean would have never put his trust in a monster. That Dean wouldn't let people back into his life that had screwed him over, and now…I don't know, now it's like he just doesn't care about letting people in that who could hurt him, or…people who already have."
"So, it's not just about the vampire." Charlie said. "Who else has Dean been trusting that you don't think he should?"
Sam gritted his teeth and shook his head. "Cas really messed him up Charlie. I mean, the guy already turned his back on us once and Dean just let him back into our lives like nothing even happened."
"Ah." Charlie said, with complete understanding. "Okay, I get it now."
"Get what?" Sam asked.
"I get why Dean has been acting wierd, duh." She said, like it was obvious. Sam sat, staring at her, trying to peice together what puzzle she seemed to have completed. "Oh, my God. Do you really not see it?" Charlie laughed.
"Um, no?" Sam said, skeptically.
"Wow," she scoffed. "And here I thought you were the observant one." Sam waited for her to explain herself, still utterly lost on what she was talking about. "It's Castiel." She said, speaking to him as if he were a child.
"What about him?" Sam asked, hoping like hell that she wasn't talking about the angel brainwashing his brother or something.
"I've read the books, Sam." She said. "I know all about Dean's special Angel friend."
"No." Sam shook his head. "No, chuck stopped writing after Dean went to hell. There's no way you could have a read anything about Cas."
Charlie scrunched her face and bobbed her head back and forth. "Mmmm, not exactly." She reached into her bag and pulled put her laptop, turning it on. "Remember how I said the books were online now?" Sam nodded waiting for her to continue. "Okay, dont get mad," she said as she typed "but, he may have kept writing a little bit longer than you thought…."
"He what?!" Sam said, furious. They had told that dick to knock it off after that stupid convention."How long?"
"Relax." She said, scrolling through some page on her screen. "He stopped after you sacrifice yourself to Hell, actually. It was beautifully written by the way, super emotional, but no one has seen or heard from him since."
'Good!' Sam thought to himself. He felt a little bad for that thought, since Kevin was now the prophet it meant that the reason no one had heard from Chuck was likely because he was dead, but at least no one else could know more about their lives than they already did. "Okay, but what does any of this have to do with Dean? Why would Cas be the reason he's acting wierd?"
Charlie sighed, cringing to her self a little. "Well, as you already know, where there's a fandom, there's most likely fanfiction…"
"I'm aware." Sam said, peeved by the memory of stumbling upon the fanfiction written about him and Dean.
"Look, I'm not saying anything is definite, but alot of people who write fanfiction are really good at reading between the lines." She clicked her mouse a few times before closing her laptop and setting it back in her bag. "I mean, I've read all the books myself, and I totally know that you guys are real people and not some fictional characters, and it's completely not okay to speculate on your lives and feelings or whatever...but I mean, it's kinda hard not to see where they're all coming from."
"What are you talking about, Charlie?"
"Dean said that Benny helped him fight through purgatory, right?" She said. "He met him pretty early on in his time there, no?"
"Yeah," Sam said, still completely bemused, "I guess…Dean hasn't really talked a lot about what happened while he was there. He told me some things, but he never really went into detail."
Charlie nodded and shrugged sheepishly before continuing. "Okay, so he met Benny early on, and Benny told him he had a way to get back, right off the bat. So, why did it take them so long to get out of there?"
"Dean said he spent alot of his time searching for Cas." Sam answered.
"Exactly!" She exclaimed, like that should have been the answer.
"I'm sorry Charlie, I still don't understand what you're getting at here."
"Sam, he could've come back at any point after meeting Benny. They only spent as much time as they did together, because Dean wanted to bring Castiel back with him. Even after everything he did. Don't you think that's a little…suspicious?"
"That's exactly what I've been saying!" Sam said. "Why would he do that?!"
"Yeah, Sam, why?" She said, still trying to lead him. "Why would someone run back into a fire, when they have a way out? I mean, I think you, of all people, would know the answer to that."
Sam gaped at her in shock. It took a minute for him to register what she was implying, but once he did… "Charlie, that's…"
"Just a thought!" She defended before he finished. "I'm just saying that Dean doesn't normally put his trust in people. Except, maybe…the people he REALLY cares about and the people that protect them. Maybe there's more to the story when it comes to his trust in Benny than you thought. I definitely feel like there's more when it comes to Castiel."
"Charlie, come on." Sam laughed a little. " You know Dean. He's…"
"More complicated than people give him credit for." Charlie cut him off. "He also knows how hard it is to let go of the people he loves. He's actually really bad at it. Maybe, worse than you know."
"Charlie," Sam started, before being cut off once more.
"He's definitely more concerned about you than you think." Charlie said firmly, standing up as she did. She began packing once more, keeping her eyes averted from Sam's. "He's not trying to control you, you know. He raised you, Sam. You mean alot to him. You ever think for a moment that he's just really scared for you? Scared of losing you? I mean, back to my point, he is really bad at losing people."
Sam sat in silence, petulantly mulling over Charlie's words. She was right, probably. Dean may have been scared, but it was still possible that he just couldn't hack the life anymore. Sam wasn't some child. And the other stuff she was saying…she was way off base. There was a big difference between reading about someone's and living it.
"I sent you the link to the website I used to read the books." Charlie said as she zipped up her bags. She slung her backpack over her shoulder crossing her arms as she stared him down. "I know you lived through it all and everything, but not every part was about you. There's a few things you may have missed."
"Yeah, I don't think that's gonna happen." Sam shook his head.
"Just a suggestion." She shrugged. "It might open your eyes to a few things you don't understand. I get not wanting to relive those times but…if you ever decide that's something you might wanna do, hit me up. I can tell you what chapters to skip, or whatever. And, if your really curious about Dean's relationship to Castiel, 'On the Head of a Pin' is a good place to start. The torture chapters are pretty rough, and I know you'll want to skip over your parts…but the other stuff.…" she shrugged.
"Okay." He said, at a loss for more words than that.
"You ready to roll?" Dean said, from the doorway, knocking on the door frame before entering the room.
"Looks, like it." Charlie smiled up at him as he entered.
"I didn't interrupt anything did I?" Dean asked looking between her and Sam with concern written all over his face. "You guys look a little spooked."
"Ew, gross, no." Charlie said, scrunching her face at Dean's implications. "Sam, was just helping me with my bags. Right Sam?"
"Uh, yeah…" Sam said, standing up and grabbing her duffle off the bed.
"Eh, come on, you know I'm just teasin ya!" Dean chuckled, jabbing her on the shoulder playfully. "He may have the hair, but the body parts are all wrong, right?"
"Definitely." Charlie agreed.
"Come on." Dean said, tilting his head toward the door. He waited for Charlie to leave the room, then cast a skeptical glance at Sam before following after. Sam was sure he was in for an earful after she left. He began dreading it as he said his goodbyes, anticipating the lecture as he told Charlie she was welcome to comeback at anytime. But it wasn't the only thing on his mind now. After bidding Charlie farewell, he went inside, giving the two of them their time alone. He hesitated for a moment, convinced that the trials were seriously messing with his head if he was even considering this. Then again…
He headed to the library, grabbing a peice of paper and a pen on his way and sat down. 'This is just stupid.' He thought to himself as he wrote down the words 'On the Head of a Pin'. He heard the bunker door open. Dean walked up, the look on his face telling Sam that it was time for his ass- chewing, so he decided to cut it off before it could start.
He clicked the pen closed and stood up, ready to defend his actions. "Okay, look you were right. I-I should laid low. I-I know." He said as Dean approached him."I should have hung back. I'm glad I was able.."
Then Dean grabbed him. Then Dean pulled him into a hug. It wasn't at all what he was expecting. He was lost, but relieved and hugged his brother back.
Dean chuckled and patted his back before pulling away. "What do you say we find our prophet?." Dean smiled, before smaking him in the chest and walking away.
Sam was left to himself, completely bewildered by what had just occurred. Dean had certainly not been acting like himself, but this was a whole new level. Maybe there was some truth to Charlie's words? Maybe he really was just scared? Maybe Sam really didn't know everything about his brother. Now, wasn't the time to think about that, though. Dean was right, the had to look for Kevin. They had work to do. Research.
But Dean had to sleep at some point. Maybe Sam could do a little light reading in that time.
If Charlie was right about Dean being scared for him, who knew what else she was right about?

Of Exes And Imaginary Jonathans
NOTES: The plot is based on @super-sootica ‘s text post. It includes two (2) original characters, but there’s a reason they’re there ;). 6k words, and No archive Warnings Apply.
Also, let’s all pretend this is before Thursday. And Cas hasn’t come back yet. It’s based between 15x06 and 15x07. Mostly crack, but we’ll treat it like it’s serious, ‘kay? Have a good time reading ~
(Read on ao3)
***
It’s been a long day.
Castiel is definitely not in the mood to study the drinks list, but he knows he isn’t a Winchester, who saunters up to the bar, doesn’t even have to summon the barkeep, and orders an immensely cool sounding drink from memory. Or, more likely - makes plain whiskey sound cool. ‘Straight’ or ‘on the rocks.’
He’s Cas, so he seats himself awkwardly on a barstool, waits until he doesn’t have to compete for the bartender’s attention anymore, and orders the first thing on the menu whose ingredients he recognizes.
“Well?” the blonde bartender asks. She’s got a kind look in her eyes. Freckles too.
“Hot tati,” he declares. She nods at him, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. She’s got a tattoo, which looks like Enochian for ‘H,’ which was probably not the point - it also resemble a heart too, but of course the alphabet is what he registers first.
“Strong?”
“In proportion to the honey peppermint,” Cas tells her and she smiles like he’s funny before she turns around to make it. Meanwhile, Cas looks down at the glass counter and through to the fancy shot glasses and tumblers on display.
They’re glistening like they have drinks poured in them. Kind of like tearful eyes.
He thinks about his day.
He’d gotten rid of the djinn fairly quick, though the healing afterwards had been cumbersome. He’s thankful he was able to do it. Now that he’s thinking about the monster, he’s thinking of the djinn’s alias and he’s soon thinking about his own cover.
Just like that, he’s thinking about the phone call and he’s thinking about Dean.
“There you go.” She places the drink before him and Cas pulls it closer absentmindedly, handing her the money. He doesn’t reach for any change. “I’ll be on that side of the bar, if you want something else, okay?”
Cas nods. It’s a good drink, so he smiles politely as she disappears. He holds the glass with his right hand, and his phone in his left, staring at the completely dark screen. Cas doesn’t know what he’d been expecting from Dean - but it hadn’t been the conversation he got.
Dean hadn’t said a single thing to him.
He’d just updated him on the status of the world ending - something Cas had promised himself he’d wait until the morning to think about - and nagged at him about checking his messages from Sam. Dean hadn’t talked about that day. Or how he was doing. Asked nothing about how Cas was either.
Was Cas the only one who couldn’t stop thinking about it?
He was almost disappointed now, though he’d just been irritated the entire time Dean had been there.
Dean had been adamant that Cas check those messages, hadn’t he? Cas fiddles with the lock button on the side of his phone and takes another sip. It isn’t supposed to taste like anything to him, but it tastes more of whiskey, than sweet. If this goes on, he’ll even end up drunk.
Nothing is happening like it should.
Cas puts it back on the counter, the tall glass mostly drained. He feels a different kind of fuzzy around the edges, but it’s too little to even notice.
“Scared of committing?” Says someone.
“To the drink?” Cas returns, eyebrows up in his hair, as he turns to face the voice. It’s a woman, her chin propped against her palm, and her elbow propped against the slab, and she’s staring him in the eyes.
Cas realizes he should’ve just said, ’excuse me?’ But now she’s smiling at him.
“Nope, I mean it, like,” She straightens a little, and Cas can see she’s wearing a sleeveless jacket, when she uses her hands to gesticulate as she speaks. He never understood the purpose, because it’s not even zipped up, but he remembers Dean finds them pretty. “ That’s a drink which just went through a break up. Right up there, on the got-dumped shelf, along with white frigging wine.”
She’s obviously drunk. Drinks don’t break up.
“So, yeah. Did you catch yourself a commitment-phobic fish?” She repeats, grinning, not unkindly.
He likes her smile. It’s warm, somehow. He takes another sip from his glass.
Then, he blinks. “Well. He probably was that too.”
“Look who’s nice and petty. I like you.” She coos, dragging her stool an inch to his. “Doesn’t look like you’ll be ordering sad whiskeys to brood into tonight, though you’re definitely serving the looks for it.” She pauses abruptly, and turns to the woman who’d got him the drink. “Doesn’t he look like he’d make a good brooder, Heli?”
When 'Heli’ doesn’t reply at once, she turns back to Cas. “Sorry 'bout that. I’m way too gay, but she’s bi. Ergo, a way better judge.” She drawls out the 'way’, almost sings it. It’s a little funny. “Nevermind. Look sad again when she comes back here, okay? I’ll ask her then.”
Cas nods, and he’s smiling without really knowing why.
“See, I’m not sure, but do you need to talk?” She turns a little bit serious. “I think you want to talk about it, now that I’ve gone and brought it up.” She holds out her hand, like Castiel’s supposed to shake it. “I’m Dimitri, if you don’t just want to rant to a stranger.” Cas does shake her hand after all.
“He thinks I’m everything that’s wrong with the world.” Cas says, truthful enough, and he finishes off his glass. More would be nice. “I’m Castiel.”
She cackles, after her eyebrows go down from the 'he’ bit. It’s a genuine laugh. “Trust me, I get that. My girl once thought I got her mother to dye her hair pink.” She rolls her eyes theatrically. “I think she was jealous of how her mother totally pulled it off, but geez, did she freak out on me.”
Cas hasn’t won any medals for being adept at social interactions, but he doesn’t think this is a good time to mention that his guy thinks Castiel killed his mom.

Life After
“Come again?” Dean raises an eyebrow. Sam just looks across the table, chugging a bottle of water. He woke up fifteen minutes ago sprawled out in the hallway. He came to just as Dean smacked him hard across the face.
“I know how it sounds, but it’s the truth.” Sam wants to take a moment, just a beat and try to wrap his head around the fact that he’s home, but he doesn’t have the luxury. You’re not there.
“You’re sure it wasn’t a dream, or maybe a Djinn?” Dean places his hands on the table, leaning toward his brother.
“No,” Sam runs both hands through his hair, blinking while trying to shake off layers of fatigue and exhaustion. Whatever pulled him back into the real world zapped every ounce of energy in the process. “This wasn’t like anything we’ve ever seen before. Are you sure it’s only been five months?”
“I’ve been going crazy looking for you. I think I’d know if you were gone for five years.” Dean sets a hand on his hip, the other gesturing toward Sam. “I’m just glad you’re alright.”
“Yeah, I feel ok. Just tired and thirsty.” Sam twists his torso, his back in knots and his shoulders sore. He feels like he got hit by a semi-truck.
“You were there with some chick?” He raises an eyebrow.
Sam sets down the empty bottle on the table and put his lips together before responding. “We’ve got to talk about some things…”
Before Sam has a chance to finish, or for Dean to respond, Dean’s cell phone rings loud in his pocket and Sam’s face goes white.
-
You roll your eyes behind dry eyelids, unable to determine where you are or what’s happening. All the sounds around you blur into one dull droning of blips, buzzes and muffled voices. The first noise your ears hone in on is that of the heart monitor. You know the sound well and, for a moment, you have a flash of waking up in the Shadow Hill Community Hospital.
Whole thoughts aren’t forming yet; instead it’s just base knowledge as you fight through the fog in your head.
Beep
Beep
Beep
The monitor speeds up as you struggle to open your eyes. There’s a muted chorus of voices as you sort through the commotion. You can’t put the logic of it together but you’re listening for Sam’s voice somewhere in the mix.
It’s the familiar sound of your mother that straightens out first, sharpening from mumbled sounds into crystal clear words.
“I think she’s waking up,” she sounds excited, her voice catching. “Go get the nurse.”
“Just push the button,” Your father joins in. You almost melt as his presence is confirmed.
“Can you hear me Y/N?” Your mom asks. Her question is mixed with the sensation of her hand on your arm. You know her touch. Swallowing, you muster strength, blinking both eyes open. The light burns and you groan, fluttering until you see your mom, sitting in a chair at the right side of your bed.
“Thank God,” your father exclaims taking your other hand. You turn to look at him, weakly squeezing his fingers.
“Hi,” you rasp, then cough as the words set your throat on fire.
“Don’t talk sweetheart,” your mother cries. “We’ll get you some ice chips. For fuck’s sake Clint, go get the doctor!” Even in your altered state, it’s shocking to hear her drop the F-bomb.
A lot happens all at the same time. All the events of the previous five years come back to you in a flood of memories that make your brain feel like it’s exploding inside your head. You shriek, doubling over in pain. The delivery of this remembrance is accompanied by clear thought. The onslaught of the relocation shakes you free from the trauma and the drugs. You shoot from groggy and confused to painfully alert in the snap of a finger.
Your father holds your mother while she cries as you’re surrounded by doctors and nurses. All it takes is a push of a needle into your IV and the sedation lulls you back into a dark sleep.
Twelve Hours Later
When you awake a second time, the transition is smoother than the first. Your mother hovers on the constant verge of tears as your father tries to make awkward small talk. A police detective arrives at the same time as your dinner. Nibbling on the corner of a slice of white bread, you answer a series of uncomfortable questions as your family looks on in quiet judgment.
“So you’re sure that no one held you against your will?” The officer cocks his head as his eyes drift to your parents. “Maybe we should talk alone.”
“It’s ok,” you assure him. “I was just feeling overwhelmed by - life you know? I wanted to get away and clear my head and I guess I kinda panicked. I should have called or told someone I was alright but I...I’m really sorry.”
You don’t even want to look at your parents, if they even buy your story. Which is doubtful. They’re going to be so disappointed that it might break your heart. But the truth isn’t an option. Not unless you want to be committed.
“I keep asking about this because, not only does everyone you know say this disappearing act was completely out of character, but you’re pregnant and the doctors say you’re severely malnourished. That sends up some red flags, you know? Like maybe you were in a situation where you didn’t have access to food.”
“It’s been a hard pregnancy, I’ve been sick a lot.” You run a hand over your stomach.
“You can tell the truth honey,” your mother leans forward from her perch on the windowsill. Her eyes are brimming with tears. She wants so badly for there to be a reason that you so abruptly abandoned the people who love you and you want nothing more than to give her a better answer, but there isn’t one. “You have a man’s name tattooed on your ankle, it’s practically a brand! Someone must have made you-”
“Mom,” you stop her, struggling to sit up straight. “I met a guy, I got drunk...he’s got one too. No one kidnapped me or made me do anything. I just needed to get away for awhile.”
--
“There’s someone here who’s very excited to see you.” You mother forces an upbeat, sing-song tone.
When Jack walks through the door, he’s a wearing a shirt similar to one of Sam’s favorites. For a split second you think that Jack is Sam, your heart swelling and sinking in the same moment. Part of you almost forgot about him. The sight of his familiar face feels like a dizzy memory from a dream.
“I can’t believe it,” he smiles sinking down on his haunches at the side of the bed. “I knew you were out there somewhere.”
“I, um, I’m sorry.” Apologizing has become your new default. Over the last twenty-four hours you’ve found yourself often without a response and ‘I’m sorry’ seems to be your only answer.
“Oh, don’t be sorry,” His hand is sweeping gently down the side of your face. You close your eyes and shift away from his touch. It doesn’t seem to phase him. “You’re here now and that’s all that matters. We can all move on from here. Together.”
During the time in Shadow Hill with Sam, you thought of Jack and figured he would mourn your loss and quietly go on with his life. This is clearly not the case.
“You waited five years for me?” You whisper is disbelief.
“Five months honey,” your mother pats the back of your hand.
Right. You slipped again. You and Sam talked about this. About all the scenarios of being thrown back into your old life. Sam was one who insisted you go through every possible set of events, including the fact that time might pass differently in Shadow Hill. Five years there could be five days or five decades here.
“Right,” you offer a lopsided smile, things making more sense now. “I meant five months.”
“Of course I waited,” Jack takes your hand into his, you resist the urge to immediately pull away. “I can’t tell you how relieved we all are, and I couldn’t be happier. I’m so thankful you’re both alright.” He reaches out of places a hand over your round belly. You hold your breath.
He thinks the baby is his, they all do. You look at your parents who yet again are fighting to hold back emotion. You’re almost seven months pregnant, according to this timeline you would have been two months along when you disappeared.
“Please,” you lift his hand away from your stomach, stumbling over your words. “Just don’t...don’t do that.”
“There’s nothing be afraid of,” Jack tries to sooth you. “I’m ready for this. We talked about having a family one day.”
“It’s not your baby.” You clarify, maybe a little too blunt but there’s no taking it back now.
“What are you talking about?” He tips his head, his smile waning.
“Yes,” You mother stands up, her eyes narrowing. “What are you talking about?”
“You know what?” You’ve had enough. You’ve danced the dance for a day now, but you’re tired and exhausted. You’ve pushed Sam out of your mind because you’ve been under a microscope since you woke up, but in this moment you’re done. “I need everyone to get out of my room.”
“Just calm down sweetheart.”
“I don’t want to calm down.” You pick up the remote and hit the ‘call nurse’ button frantically. “I want to be alone.”
As soon as the door to the room clicks shut, you pick up the phone beside the bed and dial the number you’ve memorized like the back of your hand. It’s truth time.
“Hello?” A gruff voice answers. He sounds cranky, thank God. Dean, it has to be him.
“Dean?” You ask.
“Yeah, who’s this?” He snaps back. You hear Sam in the background. Your heart speeds up to a gallop, an idiotic smile spreading across your face. “Give me the damn phone!” You hear him shout.
“Sam?” you confirm, tears spilling in relief.
“Y/N?” Sam’s voice is shaky. “Are you okay? Where are you?”
“Are you alright?” Biting your lip, you contain the urge to squeal. You’re both alive and you both remember. “I’m in the hospital.”
He ignores your question. “Why are you in the hospital? Is the baby-”
“We’re both alright. I just turned up unconscious on my parent's lawn in the middle of the night. The neighbor’s kid said he saw me fall from the sky. I don’t think anybody believes him, but I do. I’m banged up.”
“Dean found me in the hallway. I didn’t wake up until an hour ago. I’m gonna come get you, just stay where you are.” There’s rustling on the other end of the line.
“This is good right? We both remember?”
“It could be a lot worse.”
---
Sam makes the twelve hour drive in a little under ten. Dean protested, pointing out that he needed sleep and maybe a doctor but in the end he took the keys and didn’t look back.
He slips into your room just after the sun comes up. It’s still early enough that your constant stream of visitors hasn’t yet arrived. You’re sleeping soundly, mouth hanging open with a bag of saline dripping into your arm. Your face looks thin, more gaunt than he remembers. He’s grown used to seeing you nearly every moment of every day but being apart, even for forty-eight hours, gives him a new perspective. Your face should be rounder, filling out as your stomach grows. But between the lack of food and plethora of stressors during your last months in Shadow Hill, you went in the other direction. He didn’t realize exactly how much until now.
Your eyelids flutter open the moment he takes your hand, a lazy, happy smile budding at the sight of him. “Hi.”
“Hi.” He squeezes your fingers, before bringing your hand to his mouth.
“I missed you,” you confide. His heart still skips when you say things like that.
“Missed you too, baby.” He kisses your knuckles, wrapping both his big hands around your small fist. “Do you feel good enough to get out here? If you need to stay, that’s fine. But people aren’t gonna stop asking questions, at least for a while. It’s probably better if you get your bearings before you start giving answers.”
“I’m good. I’ve probably already said more than I should have, but I stuck to the stuff we talked about.” You explain.
Sam stands, then leans down to kiss you. Your lips are dry as the desert but he doesn’t care. He rubs his nose into your cheek, nuzzling with a gentle press of his mouth on yours.
“What the hell is going on here?” Your father’s voice snaps you both to attention and Sam stands up straight.
“Dad,” you try to intercede, propping yourself up into a sitting position.
“It’s ok,” Sam takes a step away from you.
“I don’t know who the hell you are and frankly I don’t care, you better get away from my daughter.” Clint has always been an imposing figure but he’s larger than life when it comes to his kids. Your father radiates a ferocious protectiveness.
Sam looks to you and moves away from the bed. “I wouldn’t hurt her.”
“You better pray you’re not the reason my little girl has been missing,” his voice hitches up an octave. You’ve only seen him cry once before.  “Or be the father of that baby because I swear to God I will kill anyone who puts their hands on my daughter-”
“Daddy it’s okay, I’m alright.” You reach out for him. “Sam, I think we need a few minutes.”
Sam doesn’t hesitate, just sets his jaw and nods before leaving the room. Your father is pissed as hell at you and he’s held it back until now.
“You’re a smart girl. How is it you expect me to believe that you would just fall off the face of the earth and turn up five months later, pregnant and with a ring on your finger. Are you married to that man? Someone we’ve never met? I know you Y/N, you wouldn’t do that. Not to your mother and I.”
“Maybe old me wouldn't have, but things happened Dad.” If you had half a shot at getting through to anyone, it was him.
“Then tell me what happened.” He takes your hand just as Sam had, only he clutches it so tight it hurts.
“I can’t. Not yet anyway. You wouldn’t believe me if I did, anyhow. I know this is hard, but you have to find a way to trust me. Maybe you can’t right now, and that’s alright. But I just need a little faith. You know that I’m not influenced by anyone. What happened was unexpected, but if I had to do it all over again, I would. Sam is a good man and we love each other. I fell in love, the kind of love that you and Mom have. I can’t explain it all to you now, but what happened to me wasn’t bad.”
He’s still, looking at his feet. “You’re going with him?”
“You were listening.” You sigh, tipping your head back. “I have to go, for a while at least. Someday, I hope to tell you everything.”
“And he’ll take care of you?” A tear drops from the corner of his eyes and he wipes it away with a cough.
“Oh Dad, he already has.”
“This feels kinda like you’re saying goodbye, kiddo,” he pats your knee, looking away.
With a quivering chin, you watch his eyes close, “Probably because I am.”
The Bunker
The Bunker is depressing.
As the heavy metal door slams shut behind you, there’s a creeping sense of dread that simmers in your gut. It’s silent, deathly silent, no faint chirping of birds in the distance or sunlight streaming through a open curtain. No, Sam and his brother live in a subterranean tomb that’s a far cry from the happy home you once shared together.
“Come on.” Sam takes your hand, winding down a metal staircase as you descend into the belly of the beast. He’s described this place to you in painstaking detail, enough that you thought you’d be prepared for the reality of being here but you were wrong. It’s dark, ominous and frightening.
There’s soft music playing, getting stronger as Sam leads you down a winding hallway. Strains of Simon and Garfunkel greet you as Sam pushes a door open to a small bedroom where you find a man perched on the bed. He’s cleaning a gun, it’s metal parts disassembled and neatly laid out over his bedspread.
This must be Dean.
He looks up, pausing before wiping oily hands on a rag. He doesn’t speak, just looks from Sam to you, then to your stomach as his lip twitches. “Hey.”
Sam’s hand is at the small of your back, pushing you to take a few steps into the room. This feels wrong. You’re out of place, especially in his brother’s private space. You don’t belong here and you’ve got a sneaking suspicion all three of you know it.
“Hey,” Sam’s voice is strained. “Dean, this is Y/N. Baby, this is Dean.”
Dean has a physical reaction when Sam calls you baby. He flinches as his eyes close momentarily, mouth pinching tight. You force yourself to move forward and extend a hand to him.
“It’s nice to meet you. I’ve been hearing about you for years, so it’s weird to finally, you know…” When Dean doesn’t move, your left standing awkwardly with your hand hanging limply in front of you. He looks from you to Sam again and shakes his head.
“Dean...” Sam fires a warning shot.
“Yeah, it’s pretty fucking weird.” Dean flashes a dry smile, and twists the rag in his hands. “I’m kinda in the middle of something here. Maybe we could do this later, Sam?”
“Alright.” Sam’s word choice is innocuous, but he might as well have responded with fuck you.
Sam ushers you down the hallway and swings open the door to the room you’re meant to share. Everything is cold brick and hard floors, including the metal frame of his tiny bed. He’s nervous, fidgeting as he shows you the few personal items he owns. His life is sort of...sad.
For the first time in a long time, neither of you know what to say. This is a Sam you’ve only heard about in stories. This is Sam the hunter, whose life is hard and rough and scary. A life that you don’t fit into.
-
They’re speaking in hushed tones, but it sounds exactly like the muted arguments your parents had at night when you were younger. Adults trying desperately to avoid innocent ears.
“I need you to do better than whatever that was.” Sam hisses.
“I’ll roll out the welcome wagon when we know for sure what she is, Sam. Until then, I’m playing this close to the chest.” Dean snorts and his fist hits something solid.
“What are you talking about? We’ve been over this-”
“No, you went over it and I told you I’m not buying it.”
“She’s not a monster, Dean, she’s just a woman.”
“Honestly,” Dean’s dry laugh gives way to naked hostility, “For her own sake, I hope you’re wrong. We can’t even keep other hunters alive and your plan is to bring a pregnant high school science teacher into the mix?”
“Dean-”
“No, I get it. You dropped off the grid and fell in love and now you’re having a frickin’ kid. Which, by the way, don’t even get me started on that. You couldn’t wrap it up? What were you thinking? And while we’re on the topic, do you even know for sure that baby is yours? What if she’s been playing you this whole time?”
“I can’t deal with this right now.” Sam’s voice interjects at full volume. “I get that you need some time to wrap your head around this, but I can’t wait around for that. I’ve got to figure out what I’m going to do.”
“Fine,” Dean agrees. “You let me know what you and your teacher come up with.”
-
Sam feels larger than life when he wraps around you in his narrow, rickety bed. You pretend to sleep, too tired to talk and maybe a little afraid of what might be said.
‘You awake?” He whispers, resting a hand on your hip. When he doesn’t get a response he sighs, pulling you back into him the way he has a thousand times before. That familiar smell and warm body lull you slowly to sleep in this strange new world.
Two Days Later
“You doin’ ok?” Dean sits across from you, with a beer and a whiskey, alternating between the two. You can tell just by the look on his face that he’s skeptical of the whole situation. Sam keeps telling you Dean gets it, that he’s on board, but it’s clear he’s just trying to placate you.
“I’m just exhausted, but other than that I’m good.” You sip the warm can of coke as the two of you try not to look at each other.
“Sam has a lot to say about you.” Dean forces the conversation.
“I bet it’s nothing compared to how much I’ve heard about you. I feel like I know you.”
“Five years is a long time to be alone together.” Dean nods soberly. “The whole thing is almost unbelievable.”
“Look, I get that you don’t really trust me.”
“I’m not trying to be a dick.” He holds his hands up. “I’m still on the fence. Sam’s gone for five months and when he comes back he’s got a ring on his finger and you’re...friggin’ pregnant. You’ll have to forgive me if I need a little time. Sam’s been through a lot. I’ve seen him get screwed over more times than I can count and until I’m a hundred percent about who, or what, you are, I gotta keep asking questions.”
“Okay.” You concede.
“Okay?” he raises an eyebrow. “That’s it?”
“It’s pretty much what Sam said would happen.” You shrug. “‘My brother won’t trust you, it’s gonna take him a while, just gotta be patient and get to know each other.’”
“I got a lot of questions for you.”
“Go ahead.”
One Week
“Hello.” The soft voice is not one you’re familiar with. You turn around to find a man standing in the doorway. He offers a warm smile and takes a step into the room.
“Hello,” you return. There’s something about him you can’t quite put your finger on, but his presence calms you, along with the thousands of thoughts rattling around in your skull since you woke up in the hospital. Your mind narrows down to this moment, able to focus on nothing other than the unassuming person in front of you. “I’m sorry, I don’t know who you are. Sam didn’t say anyone was coming by.”
“Oh, don’t worry about it,” he chuckles, dismissing you with a wave of his hand. He leans toward you as if he’s letting you in on a secret. “He doesn’t know I’m here.”
“What do you mean?” You should be worried, his confession should send up a red flag, but it doesn’t. Questioning your own actions you invite him in. “Do you want to sit?”
“No, I’m good. But you might want to.” There’s a glint in his eye, followed by a sigh and the exhale of someone who’s exhaustion rivals your own.
“Okay.” Despite having no intention of sitting, you find yourself seated on the bed.
“What are you doing here?” Sam interrupts your private conversation, Dean trailing behind him. They both looked pissed.
“Okay, I get it. You’re upset and you’ve got a right to be.” He responds shrugging casually.
“Does anybody wanna fill me in?” You inquire.
Sam glares, shaking his head in disgust. “This is Chuck.”
Chuck. You thought Sam was kidding or the tales he told were a metaphor...but Chuck’s really just a guy that looks vaguely like your middle school youth group leader.
“You’re God.” Despite your past misgivings, there’s no doubt in your mind that he is exactly who Sam told you about. You can feel it in your bones. “Oh my God, I mean...I’m sorry I shouldn’t have said that.”
“No worries.” His upbeat tone is not what you pictured from the supreme almighty.
“It’s nice of you to show up,” Dean’s disgusted. “I’ve been praying for months now and you’re nowhere to be found but suddenly you decide to grace us with your presence. Thanks.”
“You know I don’t like to interfere.”
“Why are you here?” Sam comes to stand beside you, putting himself between you and, well... God.
“I’m glad you asked,” Chuck clasps his hands together, seemingly excited. “I just had to see her in person. I mean, Sam. She really is a work of art. Beautiful, smart and loves you like the dickens.”
“What do you mean?” Sam reaches back, taking your hand.
“She’s incredibly complex. Near perfection.” He tips his head to the side, eyeing you up and down but you feel him inside you. He’s in your head and your heart, rooting around. “I really have to hand it to her. She’s right up there with Rembrandt and Chopin. Intricate, detailed, and just damaged enough to make it work. I don’t know that I could have done better myself. ”
“What. Are. You. Talking. About.” Sam grits, pulling you to your feet and tucking an arm around your waist.
“I thought you would have at least had some idea.” Chuck looks expectantly from Sam to you and back again. “My sister cooked her up. Her first real creation and she outdid herself.”
“Creation?” you whisper, feeling lightheaded.
“What the fuck are you-”
“You can’t tell me you didn’t have an inkling...” Chuck interrupts Sam. “I mean, she plucked her right out of that fantasy you used to have. You know, the dream, you remember the one you used, enjoyed...Oh no, you thought...you thought it was a premonition? ”
“Stop speaking in riddles and just tell us what’s the hell is going on.”
“Look, you know what my sister is like.”
“This was Amara?”
“She wanted to give you something.” He shrugs. “She gave Dean what he wanted most, your mother, and then she wanted to give you something too. She said she thought about Jessica, but you’re too different now. Too grown up for that to work organically, so she decided to create something, or should I say someone, just for you. ”
“You’ve gotta be shitting me.” Dean snorts, apparently the only able to articulate any emotion.
“I am not shitting.” Chuck presents a grim smile and shrugs. “Let’s look on the bright side. She really nailed it.”
“I don’t understand.” You’re wilting into Sam but he doesn’t seem to notice. He’s stoic, save for a flare of his nostrils. It’s a look you’re familiar with. He’s furious. “That doesn’t make sense. Before we woke up in that place I had a life, I had a family.”
“Well, technically you didn’t.” Chuck rolls his hand in the air letting you know he’s not finished. “It’s the beauty of what she managed to accomplish. It wasn’t just you she had to pull out of thin air, it was everything. Your family, your friends. Heck, those memories you have of your dad. I’m impressed.”
There are no words to describe how you’re feeling, but disbelief comes the closest. It’s not that you don’t trust what he’s telling you, just like everything else you know it’s true. But you can’t comprehend it.
“Why Shadow Hill? She just wanted to watch us swim around the fishbowl?” Sam spits, his arm leaving your waist as he takes a step toward God himself.
“Sam, you know as well as I do your life is pretty pathetic. She didn’t think having you meet at a singles’ bar would do the trick. She said she wanted you to have time to be with each other without all...this. She was gonna give you ten years and then zap you right back here.”
“Perfect,” Sam grunts, there’s venom in his voice.
“You said ten years,” you take a deep breath. “We were only there five and the world fell apart. There was literally fire raining down from the sky.”
“That spell the two of you cast cracked the ecosystem.”
“A crack that couldn’t be fixed so we ended up with front row seats for the end of the world?” Sam interjects. “There wasn’t even food at the end. Y/N was pregnant and terrified and I couldn’t even fucking feed her. Where was your sister? Did she get bored?”
“She used to check in on you from time to time to ensure everything was going to plan, but you caught her once. She said you saw her and she had to erase the memory. After that she was gun shy. She took a page out of my book and stayed away. Let things play out.”
He snaps his fingers and Sam can remember the night in the rain. He can see Amara slipping out the front door of the house and into the torrential rain.
“Where the fuck is she?” Sam presses. “Why isn’t she here telling us all this?”
“Because she had a very specific plan. You get ten years of domestic bliss and then you’re back here like nothing happened. You’d have been missing less than a year and life would move on.”
“Like I never existed?” you clarify.
“Exactly. If she turns up now I’m afraid she might reset things. You know I prefer to give you the choice, Sam. I’m all about free will. If you decide you want the slate wiped, I can take care of it.”
“No.” Sam squares off his shoulders and side steps between you and Chuck.
“I realize it’s a hard decision and I’m sorry.” He peaks around Sam to let you know the apology is meant for you. “You should take some time and talk it over.”
“We don’t need time.” Sam shoots back.
“It’s not just your choice Sam, there’s two other people involved. Talk about it, decide what’s best for her and your son. You can let me know.”
And with that, he’s gone.
---
“How do you feel? You know, about what he said.” Sam asks. He’s kept his distance since the revelation, but it’s been a few hours and you’re about as settled with the idea as you’re going to get.
“You mean the fact that I only exist to fill your wants and needs?” You scrunch your nose. “My inner feminist is pretty pissed.”
“You’re deflecting.” He sits on the edge of the bed, giving your thigh a squeeze.
“Because I don’t even know where to start.”
“You’re real, just as I am.” He face is strained, he’s trying but he’s off the mark.
“That’s not even the part that I’m worried about Sam! It’s the rest of it. It’s where we go from here. Are we going to have a baby and live in a bunker with your brother? If by some miracle we aren't murdered in our sleep by a monster or demon or whatever, we’re doomed to fail anyway. You’re the one who told me that the people in your life die. That you and I would never have worked in this world.”
“Things are different now.” He swallows, running a palm over the stubble of his jaw. “I’ll keep you safe.”
“You’ll die trying, Sam.” You want to shake him. “You’ll take a bullet to protect us or have a heart attack at forty from the stress of it all.”
“We can make it work,” Sam blinks, looking at the dead expression on your face. When what you’re insinuating hits him, his anger becomes palpable. “You’ve already given up.”
“I don’t want to. I love you so much and this baby, I...it’s all I want. But it’s not about what I want anymore. How can we bring a child into this? I know you Sam. You’re the guy who leaves because he thinks it’ll be better that way.”
“I won’t.” He’s hurt, and frankly, now pissed at you. “You think after everything we’ve been through, the only options we have are that I abandon you or Chuck snaps his finger and you never happened? What the hell is wrong with you?”
“I’m trying to be practical.” You sputter.
“Well fuck that.” He growls. Sam stands up and looks away from you. He’s so mad that he can’t make eye contact. He rubs a hand over his face, trying to restrain himself. “I’m not leaving and you’re not going anywhere, but I’m out. No more hunting. We’ll just stay here long enough to get something else set up, somewhere safe we can start over. New names, new lives.”
“You really think you can do that? What about your brother? You just got him back.”
“Dean will make it work. We always do. I made a commitment to you in that field, do you remember that? You’re acting like it doesn’t mean anything.”
“It means everything to me Sam. I just...I hate this all so much. I just wanna go back. While we were there, all I could think about was getting out of Shadow Hill. It felt like a prison. And now… now I just want to go back where it’s you and me and nothing else.” Your voice cracks and the tears follow, running thick and wet down your cheeks. You feel his weight on the bed when he sits, then his arms as you cry into this chest.
“Do you still love me? Now that you know everything,” He asks.
His questions takes you off guard. If anything, you should be the one asking. “Of course,” you mumble into his shirt.
“Good,” he clutches you tight. “Then we will find a way.”
Three Years Later - Just outside Lunenburg, Nova Scotia
If it were up to you, you’d never leave this place.
The ocean shore lies jagged, the rocky outcrops like a torn piece of paper where they meet the rushing waves. The shore is everything at once, every sense bombarded in a way that brings your mind to elevated thought. Eyes open to every shade of blue before you, every shade from white to browns and greys for your pleasure. Eyes closed there is the cool breeze, stealing warmth, giving you the taste and smell of the brine. The ocean's faraway music takes command of your ears with crashing waves and the cries of the gulls. To the right of this little cottage home the cliff face rises sharply, graphite in the autumn sun. Between rock and wave, you sit intoxicated on the breath of mother earth, of nature and all the wonders she holds.
The front door creaks open and Sam slips out, shutting it with a carefulness usually reserved for fine china. He smiles at you, a heavy blanket swung over his shoulder and two steaming mugs of tea precariously grasped in one hand. “I defeated the beast.”
“He went down?” You scooch over, making room on the porch swing.
“It only took two baths, three books and a half hour of me making up lyrics to that Aladdin song he loves, but I did it.”
“Two baths?” You laugh.
“Well, I thought we were home free and then there was puke everywhere.”
“Sorry,” you wince. He wraps the blanket around himself before sitting and opening it for you to join him. Lying back you rest against his chest with a warm cup between both hands. “Thanks for taking over. I don’t have it in me today.”
“It’s fine, I know you’re not yet feeling a hundred percent.” He kisses the back of your head, a strong arm snaking around your belly.
“I just hope by some miracle we haven’t given it to you.” You came down with it first. It’s been a nasty flu season and you’ve spent the better part of three days sweating on the cold tile of the bathroom floor. Just as you started to feel human again, Will crawled into your bed with rosy cheeks complaining about his stomach. Things devolved from there.
“It’s inevitable.” He shrugs, “It’s freezing out here, are you sure we shouldn’t go inside?”
“I like the fresh air. Besides, it’s warmer when you’re here.” You can see the ocean from the house, waves rolling white-caped in the distance. You lean your head back on his shoulder and soak in this still, perfect moment.
“This week is gonna be crazy, I’m having to work late every night since we’re getting ready for the holiday.” Sam’s a manager at the grocery store, it’s boring and monotonous but it pays enough to keep your son in cheerios and dinosaur pajamas. Sam’s been pretty vocal about hating the work, but it doesn’t matter. You won’t be here that much longer. “We’ll need the money before the move.”
“I love it here, I don’t want to leave.” You close your eyes and listen to the gulls squawking to one another in the distance. Sam shifts behind you and then it’s two arms enveloping you as his mouth breathes warm at your temple.
“I know, but we’ve already been here too long. We gotta keep movin’.” Sam’s past may very well catch up with you one day, but until then the two of you do everything you can to play it safe. It’s all about flying below the radar and staying on your toes, blending in before moving on. “You come up with any ideas yet?”
“I was thinking Washington state or maybe Oregon. Somewhere on the coast, I want to stay near the water.”
“Sounds perfect,” he kisses your temple but you feel him tense up. “I’ll start looking tomorrow.”
“What is it?” You turn your head. “I can practically feel you overthinking.”
“Is being with me worth all this?” He’s not really asking, he knows what your answer will be, but sometimes he needs to hear you say it. “You might never see your family again. We’ll never have a real home.”
You choose the most perfect memory of your father and cling to it. Doesn’t really matter if it’s only manufactured, because for you; it was all too real. You choose it because at that moment, he was the person he should and would have always been; had it not been for the stress of life and losing you. In that snapshot his unwarped personality was something so golden and sacred you want to keep it forever. Like an old movie reel, you can play it at will; it's 1987, on the back lawn of your childhood home. He's laughing, relaxed after mowing the lawn and asks you if you want an airplane ride and of course you do. What four-year-old doesn't? In the moment, he has your right wrist and ankle. He spins like a shot-putter, but he never lets go. The garden turns into a green blur; you’re flying. Flying until he can spin no more. The memory has no smells or weather, but the garden is in fine detail: the crab apple tree, the rhododendron bush, the weeds in the flower beds. But the finest detail is his face, creased with love and your joy, not only for the ride but for being with him.
Sam is that father to your son now, and you’ll give up whatever you have to give Will these small, precious moments that are sometimes over before they begin.
“My home is with you.” You cover emotion with jest, “are you trying to get rid of us?”
“No,” Sam chuckles as you pick up his hand, running your thumb over a bluish vein. “Never.”
“It’s always going to be you and me, Sam.” You confirm. “You and me ‘till the wheels fall off.”
The End.

Sam Winchester: Family
Fandom: Supernatural Pairing: Sam & Son!Reader Summary: It’s been a big secret, and once you’re captured by a Djinn, it seems the secret’s out. Request: So Sam doesn’t know He is a father, and Dean and Sam has taken on this younger Hunter who ‘ran away from home’, who is actually Sam’s son. When he gets kidnapped by a Djinn, the reader imagines that Sam would hate him since the Djinn feeds off Nightmares in this case, and when he gets saved, he admits to Sam but it’s like a murmur under his breath before passing out due to blood loss or something? What would Sam’s reaction be? Dean’s reaction to being an uncle?
Tumblr media
It was harder than anticipated.
You hadn’t particularly meant to bump into Sam and Dean Winchester, but it had happened. It had been a particularly nasty demon that had come to theirs and your attention. And then things had escalated.
You were now something like their apprentice. It was weird.
When they had found you, you had claimed that you ran away from home. It had slight truth to it; you had ran away after your mom had died. Being someone who knew the Winchesters, it usually meant death and destruction in one way or another. Your mom used to talk about your father, a tall man whose heart was full of love and care, even if he had a dangerous streak to him. It made it hurt more now that she had died.
And it felt like it was your turn for it.
The three of you had been hunting a Djinn. It was always a difficult task as they were often than not capable of giving you the best made up life, or a goddamn living nightmare.
It didn’t feel like it came as a surprised when the Djinn apprehended you. You’d never been up against them before, so had been at a disadvantage, not knowing how they work.
Not that you were aware of it, but you had been tied up, arms above your head, feet brushing the ground. You were in your head, reliving nightmares you’d thought of before. But now they were real. Dream-Sam felt so much like real Sam that it was impossible for you to tell that it was a façade.
“I’m your son,” you said, trying to make dream-Sam less angry. He had found you in his room, and got very angry very fast. “Don’t - please don’t be mad.”
“I’m furious,” dream-Sam said, storming towards you. The fear rooted you to the ground.
“NO!”
Before Sam got to you, everything vanished like smoke, leaving you in darkness.
When you woke up, you found yourself in bed in the bunker. You felt disorientated, and could feel a headache coming on.
“Hey.” You looked up and jerked away, almost falling off the other end of the bed. Sam was there, looking confused and worried. “Hey, hey, I’m not gonna hurt you, I promise,” he said, holding his hands up in a peaceful gesture. “The Djinn, it got you. Dean and I got you out.” Sam looked over at the doorway and you followed his gaze. Dean was there, leaning against the doorjamb, a look on his face that you couldn’t quite read.
“Uh, ri- thanks. Yeah.” You shifted, sitting up, still feeling shaky about being kidnapped. “It was - it was feeding on nightmares. Not dreams,” you told them.
Sam and Dean shared a look. “We know,” Sam said, looking back at you. “When we found you, you weren’t - you were crying. You were kind of awake, but not enough. You were talking about something.” You felt uncomfortable when Sam and Dean shared another look.
“Are you Sam’s kid?” Dean asked, direct as always. It was a little surprising to hear the words come from someone else. “Are you?”
You took in a deep breath, bringing in all the courage you had. “Yeah. My Mom was Lucy Jones. She died a few years ago.” You shrugged. “I didn’t really … mean to keep it from either of you. Just never came up and felt wrong to bring it up after being here all this time.”
You risked a look at Sam, wondering how he was feeling. His face was a mask, but his eyes were full of shock. “You should know that you don’t have to be afraid of either of us. I’ve - I’ve never had a kid before, and you’re - you’re able to look after yourself and - and stuff -”
“What Sammy here is trying to say is that he’s gonna try and be a better dad than what ours was. Even if he’s missed most of your young life, he’s gonna be there for you from now on.” Dean looked over at Sam and smiled. “Right?”
“Right. Thanks.” You smiled at the amused look on Sam’s face. Neither of you had expected that from Dean.
“Well, I’m off to contemplate the fact my brother is a father and I’m a freaking uncle.” Dean paused. “I’m totally gonna be the cool uncle,”
You made a noise. “Weird uncle at best,” you said. It made the brothers laugh.
So you guessed that it wouldn’t be so bad.

Nancy Drew 1x12
Sorry this review took a while, my TV likes to not record the things I tell it to and I’ve been too busy to watch the new episode online until just now so let me tell you my THOUGHTS about it under the cut.
This week’s episode, The Lady of Larkspur Lane, was truly stunning. I am always a little bit skeptical of haunted asylum story lines, but this one was done really well, and I enjoyed every minute of it. And even though almost everyone does the “staff member is really a patient” twist I somehow never see it coming. In other news, I continue to be a sucker for book references.
This episode had some comedically gold moments, most notably the entire Ace and Carson storyline. “Your ax is huge! Come on, I’m gonna chop off your cuffs. It’s okay I went to archery camp I got great aim.” “Please tell me you’re not just taking me to my house.” “Where would you like to pretend that I’m taking you?” And also between Nancy and George, “Please don’t say I’m the distraction.” “You’re the distraction.” “How did you ever have a solo career?” The writers just did a really great job of having their typically creepy episode, but interspersed with some great moments of levity.
They are still steaming full slow burn charge ahead on the George and Nick pairing. The Jean Valjean banter, her pulling Nick into a closet and asking what they do for seven minutes, becoming co-bosses. But I also think it’s clear they both feel a little bit guilty about it, especially George since she and Nancy have finally become friends. The way she looked really quickly at Nick before immediately agreeing to help with Lucy’s mom? Speaking of Patrice, I want to know more about her relationship with Lucy. It looks like her spending time with Ryan and his crowd had been starting to drive them apart, and then something happened that her mother just couldn’t allow and so she hid it somewhere the key card grants access to. And when she thought Nancy was her mom, you could see how that hurt Nancy.
The whole time in the asylum was really well done too. The living wing was like six kinds of creepy, and then when they left the doors open and the ball rolled out to creepy childish laughter? I had to stop myself from cheering. Sal was also pretty well done, but I have to wonder why is he a patient? I’m thinking he’s either a sociopath, or not all the children died that night and he’s a descendant of the Ropeur family or something. But if he doesn’t turn out to be very significant, that would also work because they didn’t really set him up to be anything more than a plot device. And when the security cameras first went on the fritz, I at first thought it was George making a distraction somehow before realizing it was the ghosts.
Slight tangent. Can I just say how much I absolutely adore how this show does ghosts? Like instead of overdone CGI or anything like that (I’m looking at you Charmed reboot) they take real live people, slap them in the creepiest fucking costume and makeup you have ever seen, play with the camera angles, and boom it’s better than like ninety percent of the horror movies out there.
Ace’s storyline was, as I mentioned earlier, comedic gold. They did a really good job of showing how he can be so smart but also so clueless. He also hacked into the DOC, which was good because I completely forgot he was a hacker. And I am hopeful for Lara Tandy to come back in some capacity, because I am starting to miss her. And she and Ace were pretty good together, up until he briefly suspected her of murder of course.
To talk briefly about Bess’s storyline, I feel like in the future she’s going to be one of the ways they continue to tie in the storyline to the rich and famous. Her, and for the time being Nancy’s relationship with Owen. By the way where was he this episode? Not that I’m complaining since I still don’t like him, but even so. They are doing a good job of showing Ryan trying to be human, but it’s also realistic that he continually needs to be pushed into it from outside sources. I mean he’s been a Hudson for twenty plus years, that doesn’t just go away overnight. And I am still convinced he will come forward with that urn he found. Aside from that I don’t have many thoughts, except that Amaya looked a lot like this YouTuber I watch which was distracting, and when she said “fake it till you make it” I thought my mother had come in the room without me noticing.
Nancy was as always fantastic in this episode, and the continual Nancy x Nick shipper in me swooned when she was about to go into the East Wing. “What about the guy who’s not on the most wanted list?” “I will need him, to come in and save me, if I am not back in ten minutes.” I mean??? And then that ending, the goddamn ending, I have no words. When she fell to the floor I thought maybe Lucy was going to come frighten off the other spirits? Like, ‘back off this one is under my protection’ or something. Then she woke up in some sort of dream state and the roaches crawled into her room and it ended and just Jesus Christ. I’m thinking it will be sort of like this episode from Supernatural that I don’t remember all that well, where a djinn like captured Dean and stuck him in a dream state to feed off him and he realized it wasn’t real and had to force himself awake. The way they showed that sand bottle breaking at the beginning, I thought I was supposed to remember it at first, it wasn’t until the end that I realized it is probably going to be one of the things that helps snap Nancy out of whatever trance she is in.
Moving forward. Next week’s episode looks like it will be mostly centered on breaking Nancy out of wherever her mind is trapped. From the trailer it looks like Sal will get the others back in the building, and there will be even more not-so-friendly neighborhood ghosts. I also suspect Nancy might not entirely want to come back. From the looks of the reality so far, her mom is still alive, she’s together with Nick, has a good relationship with her dad; some pretty solid advantages over her current life with her mom dead her dad in prison and her almost dying twice a week. But eventually she’ll realize that like all fantasies, it can’t last, and she’ll wake up. Although I definitely want some answers on whatever dark force went after her and the Ropeurs. Afterwards they’ll probably work on finding where the key card from the Bible leads to, so I’m very hopeful that episode 13 or 14 will give us some fairly definitive answers, at least about Lucy’s murder. And as for Bess/Amaya/Lisbeth? I can smell a love triangle coming from a mile away. I have also sort of suspected for a while now that Bess and Lisbeth would end in heartbreak, and I feel like this is leading up to that potentially in multiple ways. Regardless of what happens, I cannot wait for next week’s episode, The Whisper Box.

Dr. Tali Sullivan Chapter 18
Dad wasn’t home when I arrived, but not because he was hunting. He had run to the store after realizing he’d forgotten my walnuts. A Christmas tradition from my childhood, what used to fill an entire stocking was now kept in a bowl near my favorite chair during the holidays. Or would, but he’d forgotten to pick them up during his first trip to the store. And so my mom greeted me as I carried in my messenger bag. My suitcase could wait for now, but I couldn’t with the urge to feel the peace of the house I grew up in overwhelming me more than I could articulate.
The peace was short lived. I sat Mom down and watched as she went from shocked to pissed in under a minute. Livid, I thought she would burn the entire house down before Dad got back with my walnuts.
“You did what?!” She asked for the thousandth time it seemed. Claire O’Malley Sullivan, my mother, was what I had once imagined I would look like when I grew up and had my own family. Same hair, same eyes, same need for glasses, and same short stature. She was glaring at me as though she’d never met me before, and I knew the feeling. “Tali Rebecca Sullivan, you were NOT raised to make such a frivolous and asinine deal.” No kidding, Mom. “I understand that you missed him, but this? This is too high a price to pay.”
I couldn’t argue with her, hadn’t I been tossing around that very idea before I arrived? It still hurt, feeling more idiotic with every single moment that came from agreeing to the demon’s deal until the moment I told her, but it wasn’t like I could take it back.
“John and Dean got taken by a djinn a few days ago,” my voice was quiet, racked with pain at the reality of what John’s deepest desire was. “Neither one of them could look me in the eyes when they came back.”
Mom snorted, and I shot her a look of disbelief. “Of course they couldn’t. John saw Mary, because I swear to God she had him wrapped around her little finger from the moment she agreed to go out on their first date.” She settled back into her chair, reminding me that her Irish temper burned fast and bright, but also calmed just as quick. “And Dean?” I kept my eyes on her. “That boy has been in love with you since you two were four years old.” Another flash of guilt ran through me, this time over the pain that Dean must still be feeling. “You gave your SOUL for John, Tali. If a genie showed me that my only wish was still to be with you, I’d probably have issues with eye contact too.”
Dad wasn’t much better when I told him. He didn’t rage, Sean Sullivan wasn’t known for irrational acts. No, he simply simmered. Ever so often I’d catch him looking at me and could feel the disappointment rolling in waves off of him.
I had never had this type of reaction from my parents. The most I’d gotten into trouble over was being out too late or being caught kissing on the porch after curfew. This, going against every single bit of my upbringing and giving up my own soul for another person, was the worst of the worst.
The spirit of the season took over, leaving that same undercurrent flowing. From disappointment to a tinge of fear, I could almost pinpoint the moment when it went from seeing me as a source of pain to seeing the countdown begin in their eyes. Counting down the moments they’d have with me between now and the end.
I spent the majority of my winter break with my phone off. I rarely went online. My time was filled with seeing the people I’d gone to school with, making memories with family that I only got to see during the holidays, and making sure, I hoped, that everyone knew how much I loved them.
Eventually though, every break has to end. And so, the day before New Year’s Eve, Dad helped me pack up my car with my gifts and my bags. He pulled me into a tight hug, whispering into my hair how much he loved me and I knew, even though he didn’t understand, he forgave me. Mom handed me a few tin containers of the cookies that we’d baked together, begrudgingly asking that I give them to John and the boys, and then repeated the same bone-crushing hug that Dad had given me.
I knew I had close to ten years to say good-bye, but I also realized that it would take all of that time to make sure I did it properly. As I drove away, heading back to my regular life, I felt a contentment in knowing that regardless of John’s choice regarding his feelings for me, I’d made peace with my decision.
I saw the Impala parked in front of my house when I finally arrived and felt a tug and pull to be with the three of them. Even if John decided it was the feeling of owing me and he wanted to pull back, I knew that having them in my life as anything would be enough. And lucky for me, as he rushed to open my car door, I saw that he’d made a completely different choice.
His mouth met mine and I knew, with as much certainty that I had for anything, that John Winchester and I would be side by side, until my very end.
Little did I know that in a few short months, our entire world would would be upturned. And no one knew everything about anything, not even me.

Chapter 34
“There’s no way there’s angels,” Aaliyah argued.
“Then what else could it be?” Sam countered.
Aaliyah had been pacing Bobby’s living room where he sat at his desk, Sam sat in a chair with Dean standing not far from.
“All I know is that I wasn’t groped by an angel,” Dean tossed into the conversation.
“Okay, Dean. But what would this Castiel have to lie to you about it?” Sam asked.
“Maybe he’s some kind of demon. They lie.”
“A demon that’s immune to salt rounds, devil’s traps, and Ruby’s knife,” Aaliyah said, her pacing coming to a stop. “Lilith’s afraid of that thing.”
“Don’t you think at one point a hunter … you know … woulda seen one?” Dean asked them both.
“You did,” Aaliyah pointed out.
“I’m trying to figure out a theory here; work with me,” Dean pled. “One with less fairy dust.”
“Okay, look.” Sam leaned forward in the chair. “I’m not saying we know for sure. I’m just saying that we …”
“That’s the point, we don’t know for sure. So I’m not gonna believe that this … thing’s an angel of the Lord just because it says it is.”
“You three chuckleheads gonna argue religion, or come look at this?” Bobby called over to them.
Aaliyah looked over at the older hunter and walked over to look at what was laid out.
“I got stacks of lore,” he started. “Biblical, pre-Biblical. Hell, some of it’s in cuneiform. It all says that an angel can snatch a soul from the Pit.”
“What else?” Dean prodded. “What else can it do?”
“Air lift your ass outta hell? Nothing.”
“This is good news,” Sam said.
“How’s this good news?” Aaliyah asked.
“For once this isn’t demon crap. He was saved by the good guys.”
“Say it is true,” Dean jumped in. “Then what? There’s a God?”
“At this point, Vegas’ money’s on yeah,” Bobby said.
“I don’t know, guys.” Dean took a few steps away from the desk.
“I know you’re not all choir boy about this,” Sam said. “But it’s becoming less about belief and more about proof.”
“Proof?” Aaliyah questioned; her eyes narrowed. “What proof?” She heard Dean join them back at the desk.
“That there’s a God out there …”
“And he gives a crap about me personally?” Dean cut Sam off. “I’m not buying it.”
Aaliyah nodded. Why would God, or any deity, give a crap about someone who was in Hell? Or a misfit family of hunters?
“Why not?” Sam asked.
“Because why me? If there is a God, why would he give a crap about me?” Dean asked. “I mean, I’ve saved some people, okay. I figured that makes up for the stealing and ditching chicks. But why do I get to be saved? I’m just a regular guy.”
“Apparently you’re a regular guy that’s important to the man upstairs,” Sam argued.
“That creeps me out,” Dean said. “I don’t like being singled out at birthday parties, much less … God.”
“What do we know about angels?” Aaliyah cut in. She watched Bobby lift up a pile of books and dropped them on the desk.
“Start reading,” the older hunter instructed.
Aaliyah took a book from the pile while Dean told Sam he was getting pie. She flomped down onto the couch and got comfortable. After a while, her attention drifted away from the book. Her head started nodding as sleep crept up on her. The sound of her phone ringing caught her from answering sleep’s call.
“Mm’lo,” she muttered.
“Is this Aaliyah Fisher?” the caller asked.
“Depends on why you’re calling?” Aaliyah adjusted herself on the couch into a sitting position.
“I’m calling on the behalf of one Casey Fisher. My name’s Georgetta Hayes, Mr. Fisher’s lawyer. I need to get ahold of any one of Mr. Fisher’s children.”
“What about?” Aaliyah dug.
“It is something I feel better discussed in person with my retainer’s children,” Georgetta told her. “Can you pass on the message to them?”
“Only if you can provide an address for them?” Aaliyah countered, searching for a scrap piece of paper and pen. She jotted the address down as the lawyer provided it. “Thank you.” She ended the call as she pushed herself off the couch.
“Guys, something’s come up,” she called out, gathering her things.
“And you’re taking off?” Dean asked. “What’s so important…”
“Family issues, apparently. I know finding out what brought you out of hell, but maybe dealing with this…” Aaliyah held up the address. “Will finally stop my father coming out of the past.”
“Your fault for digging him up in the first place,” Dean told her.
“Yeah, I know.” Aaliyah made sure she had her things packed and headed for the door, stopping long enough to give Dean a kiss on his head. “I’ll keep in touch. Promise. Call me if anything major happens.”
She stepped out the back door and down the steps to her cycle. With her things secured in the saddle bags, Aaliyah mounted the cycle and started it up. Her stomach knotted a little from guilt in leaving the three hunters, but the lawyer refused to discuss matters over the phone. No matter, she would just call Leo and Nissa when she stopped on the way back to her hometown.
***
Aaliyah dumped her bag on the motel bed and fumbled through it for clean clothes. Having pushed through the night, the only things she was looking forward to was a hot shower and a quick nap. Her cell started ringing as she started up the shower.
“I hope you’re not planning on yelling,” she spoke. “After all your family drama I was dragged through…”
“It’s your family drama too,” Leo cut in. “Just so you know. Where are you?”
“In town, just got a room. Why?”
“Feel like lunch with me and Nissa? Think Xander’s looking forward to seeing you.”
Aaliyah stopped in middle of stripping off her shirt at the mention of her brother’s name. Guilt crept in before she shoved it off to a side. “The rehab place let him out?”
“After our work with the Djinn, they were a bit … eager to get him out,” Leo said. “You’d know that if you kept in touch more often.”
“I’m bad enough trying to keep myself in check,” Aaliyah countered. “We can play catch up in, say about an hour at Annie’s Kitchen.”
“Sure, sounds good.”
She waited for Leo to end the call before putting her phone on the sink counter. Making the shower quick and putting on the clean clothes, Aaliyah made sure she had her things before grabbing her helmet and heading out.
***
“Liyra,” Nissa greeted as she pushed herself to her feet for a hug.
Aaliyah accepted the hug, returning it. “Hey, Nissa.”
“What’s up with the biker get up?” Xander asked.
Aaliyah pulled from Nissa and looked at her older brother. “I was taken in by a biker gang a few months back; adopted more or less.” She shed the leather jacket and draped it over the back of a chair. “It’s been quite a while since Christmas last year.”
“Anything to drink, love?” the waitress asked as Aaliyah sat.
“Coffee, or coke. Anything caffeinated.”
The waitress nodded and headed off.
“So, what’s happened with you and the Hardy Boys?” Leo asked. “How much trouble did you guys get into?”
Aaliyah sat there as memories flashed through her mind between Christmas the year before and then. Her body shuttered when her mind froze on the images of Dean bloody on the ground after being torn to shreds by the hellhounds.
“Aaliyah, what is it?” Xander’s voice cut into her memory.
“It’s … um … Dean had made a cross roads deal to bring Sam back from the dead a little more than a year ago,” she started. “But unlike the usual ten years, he got one. All of last year, even during Christmas, I with the boys tried to find a way to break the deal. We weren’t that lucky.” She took a breath, trying to steady herself. “A hellhound ripped Dean to shreds when his time was up. I had checked out mentally for a week at Bobby’s after that. I took off from his place, getting his words all twisted up, and went off on my own before the bikers took me in.”
She looked around at her siblings just as the waitress came back with the drink for Aaliyah. “Do you all need a minute or two to decide?”
They nodded, sending the waitress off.
“That’s rough,” Leo said. “Remind me not to make any deals like that.”
“You should know not to do that period,” Xander told him. “So, you got involved with a biker group?”
“The Dragons. They know all about Hunters, the supernatural, and all things that go bump in the night,” Aaliyah kept her voice low. “Through no fault of my own.” She grabbed a menu and glanced over the options. “I actually kept out of active hunting until I heard on the news about all the windows being blown out by something.”
“Sub sonic boom,” Leo tossed out. “I’m sure a fighter jet broke the sound barrier that caused it.”
Aaliyah shook her head. “Wasn’t a jet. It was whatever brought Dean back from hell.”
Leo and Nissa half choked on their drinks.
“Wait, he’s back? How?” Nissa asked.
Aaliyah half shrugged. “According to Sam, it was an angel. Dean doesn’t believe it; and I’m …” She shrugged again. “I’m not fully buying it. Being used to dealing with demons and things that wanna kill me, I can’t wrap my head around the fact that there are legit actual angels out there willing to help one lone hunter.”
“You’re joking, right?” Leo asked. “Demons, I get. But even they won’t let someone escape from hell. Why would any angel help any of us?”
“Why would a demon let any of us out of hell?” Nissa countered.
“They wouldn’t.”
Aaliyah looked up from the menu when the waitress returned. She waited for her siblings to order before placing hers. “So, am I to naturally assume we’ve all been called by father’s lawyer?” She watched each of them nod. “Something she couldn’t discuss over the phone?”
“And trying to reach any one of us,” Xander added. “And reaching all of us, it seems.”
“But what’s this business?” Leo asked. “And why in person?”
“Maybe he finally died,” Aaliyah suggested. “The world’s better off with one less of him.”
“If that’s the case, the lawyer might be trying to execute whatever will Father had,” Nissa said.
“If he died, why didn’t mom call us?” Leo asked his sister.
“Maybe she wasn’t listened as one who was to receive anything,” Nissa guessed. “Or the lawyer already told her what she was getting.”
“Or she already got it,” Xander added.
“Does she even know about us?” Aaliyah asked, gesturing between her and Xander. “I saw no pictures of us at the house a few years ago.”
“Wait, you were at our house?” Nissa asked, putting her drink down.
Aaliyah shot a semi guilty look over to Xander, who shrugged. “It was a few years ago when I was trying to figure out what happened to Xander and dad. Before I got caught up with the Winchesters full time.”
“Whatever the lawyer wants, we’ll find out after breakfast,” Leo said.
***
Aaliyah shifted in her chair as the receptionist went about their work and ignoring the four young adults. They had arrived soon after breakfast nearly an hour ago. The woman that had arrived well after them emerged from the lawyer’s office while Georgetta and the woman exchanged farewells. The woman walked out while Georgetta walked back into her office.
“Forget this,” Aaliyah muttered to her siblings as she got to her feet.
Behind her, the receptionist called after her; which Aaliyah ignored. She threw open the door just as Georgetta sat down at the desk.
“You can’t keep us sitting out there all day, Ms. Hayes,” Aaliyah snapped at the lawyer. “You called all four of Casey Fisher’s children, and all four showed up. Now, we’re going to handle this business in person just like you asked of us.”
“I cannot unless…” Georgetta trailed off when the other three siblings walked into the office.
Aaliyah heard the door close behind her while the other two took a seat in the offered two chairs. “Now, you have all four of us here. What is this business to be done in person?”
She watched Georgetta shift in her chair before turning around to dig through some folders. The lawyer returned with one folder.
“I never liked giving bad news like this to relatives,” Georgetta started. “Your father had died about month ago in a freak accident.”
“What sort of accident?” Xander asked.
“All I was told was his body was found out in the woods torn to shreds and his heart missing.”
Aaliyah swore she heard her siblings share a look while she focused on Georgetta. Sounded like the classic werewolf case to her. “What happened to the rest of him?”
“His wife, a Helen Fisher, had him cremated due to his final wishes. And she currently still resides in their house,” Georgetta replied. “Which is acceptable. Which leaves you four. Which of you is Xander?” She nodded when he raised his hand. “You are granted the deed for the land of your childhood home. If you so wish to have it.”
Aaliyah glanced back at her brother, who shook his head. “He doesn’t want it; how does he go about selling it and getting the money from the sale?” She crossed her arms.
“Don’t worry about the details,” Georgetta assured her. “I take it that you’re Aaliyah. He’s given you the keys and title to his truck. Saying how it will work for those jobs when you need to move a dead body. And for Nissa and Leo…” She scanned the paper. “Your father’s other truck. It seems your father had a well off roofing company and the two trucks had been there since the beginning.”
“So, that’s all it was? Handing out property?” Leo asked with a scoff.
“And monies willed to Aaliyah and Xander from their mother’s will. I understand she passed a couple decades ago. It took me this long to hunt you four down for your father.”
“So, they get money and a truck while we get just a truck?” Leo started.
“Not now,” Aaliyah cut him off, barely turning to look at him. “Is there anything we have to do?”
Georgetta flipped through the paperwork. “I’ll sign over the trucks over to you and your young siblings, and start the paperwork for the funds to be transferred into Ms. Aaliyah and Mr. Xander’s accounts. IF there’s any other questions…”
“How’d our father pass away?” Nissa asked.
“The corner’s report says wolf attack with the heart missing.”
Aaliyah uncrossed her arms and actually turned to look at her siblings.
“Well, that’s … unfortunate,” Xander said. “Thanks for telling us. Guys, I think our business here is done.”
Aaliyah heard the warning in her brother’s voice and turned back to Georgetta. “If there’s anything to be mailed…” she reached into her back pocket and pulled out her walled; dropping a card on the desk. “Send it there.” She turned for the door, opening it for Xander to roll through. “And I and one of my siblings over there will be by later for our trucks.”
She was the last one out, closing the door behind them.
“What now?” Leo asked, leaving the building. “Dad’s dead, finally. And we get little from it.”
“You still got a house and a mother to go back to,” Aaliyah snapped. “We don’t. So, go back to your middle class life and leave us alone. And stay out of hunting. I shouldn’t have to remind you what happens if things go bad in a hunt.”
She helped Xander into his vehicle and started off down the road.
***
Aaliyah killed the bike as she came up to Bobby’s. With a call from Dean on the way back from dealing with the lawyer as a warning, she had arrived at the house ready for a fight. She hadn’t seen the Impala, but expected it to pull up at any second. No time to wait for the men to arrive, Aaliyah checked her handgun and eased her way to the door. Just as the rumble of the Impala’s engine echoed through the salvage yard.
One of the brothers had called out to her as she slipped into the house. She ignored them. The call she had with Bobby hadn’t gone well when she told him that the lawyer was going to send paperwork there. The fire poker was laying on the floor in the living room.
“Bobby,” she called out, gun ready.
She heard a door creak open and turned toward. Behind her were the footsteps of someone being quiet in their walking. A hand went up and gestured toward the door.
“Come out, come out, whoever you are,” Aaliyah called.
