Episode 2: Wendigo
Third Person POV ~ One Week Later
Mickey sits in the passenger seat, staring out the window with her fingers laced with Dean’s while their hands rest on her lap. Dean squeezes her hand softly causing her to look at him. He smiles at her before looking back out the windshield. She blushes before looking out her window again, thinking.
A lot has happened in the last week since their final stop in Palo Alto, and everything is running through her head. After Jess’s death, they stayed in the Stanford area, searching for any evidence of...whatever it is that killed their mother and Jess.
Nothing came of it and the Winchester brothers wanted to leave the area, continue the search for their father some more. Sam’s taking it really hard, of course. He watched his girlfriend die the exact same way as his mother. Both Mickey and Dean know he’s having nightmares of that day, but he doesn’t reveal the actual nightmares to them.
Dean squeezes her hand slightly, catching her attention. She looks over at him and he gestures slightly to the backseat. Glancing over her shoulder, she sees Sam’s head jerk back and forth during his nightmare. She bites her lip and sighs softly, squeezing Dean’s hand. He sneaks a peek over at her with a soft smile playing on his lips before paying attention to the road once again.
Not even a second later, Sam gasps loudly and sits up suddenly, jerking awake, smacking his head against the roof of the car. Mickey jumps slightly, looking back at him. He rubs his eyes with one hand before turning slightly and sitting in the middle of the seat, tilting his head down a little so he doesn’t hit the roof again.
“You okay?” Dean asks, raising an eyebrow, glancing at him at the rearview mirror.
Sam doesn’t answer. He just clears his throat and looks out the windshield. Mickey looks down at her and Dean’s hands, wondering what she could say to make this better when Dean speaks up again.
“You wanna drive for a while?”
Sam scoffs out a laugh and leans forward in the seat, looking at his other brother.
“Dean, your whole life you never once asked me that.”
Dean shrugs slightly and stares out the windshield.
“Just thought you might want to. Never mind.”
“Look, guys, you’re worried about me.” He says, glancing between the couple. “I get it, and thank you, but I’m perfectly okay.”
“Mh-hm…” Dean says, licking his bottom lip, not believing Sam for one minute.
Sam sighs and points toward the map that’s laying on the dashboard. He needs something to focus on, and figuring out how much longer they have left in their drive seems as good as any for a place to start.
“Mickey, please?” He asks.
She nods slightly and reaches up toward it. Grabbing it with her free hand, she hands it to Sam over her shoulder. He takes it and leans back, looking at large paper.
“Alright, where are we?” He asks, looking around the map.
Dean glances at the mirror before speaking. “We are just outside of Grand Junction.”
The youngest Winchester sighs as he folds the map, which is of Colorado, so he can see the large red X labeled 35-111.
“You know what? Maybe we shouldn’t have left Stanford so soon.”
Mickey glances over her shoulder, raising an eyebrow.
“Sam, we dug around there for a week. We came up with nothing.”
Dean decides to add on to his girlfriend’s thoughts by saying something that will, he hopes, help his brother find some peace of mind. Even just the smallest sliver of it.
“If you wanna find the thing that killed Jessica…”
“We gotta find Dad first.” Sam cuts him off.
Dean nods slightly before continuing his own thoughts.
“Dad disappearing...and this thing showing up again after twenty years?” He glances over at Mickey then back at Sam before finishing. “It’s no coincidence. Dad will have answers. He’ll know what to do.”
“It’s weird, guys.” Sam speaks up after a moment of silence. “These coordinates he left us. This Blackwater Ridge.”
“What about it?” Mickey asks, turning in her seat so she’s facing Dean.
She brings her left leg up so it’s bent under her while she holds her boyfriend's hand in her lap.
“There’s nothing here.” He glances at her. “It’s just woods. Why is he sending us to the middle of nowhere?”
The Impala is parked next to a sign that says ‘Ranger Station Lost Creek Trail National Forest’. The trio are inside, looking at a 3D map of the area...Well, Mickey and Sam are. Dean’s walking around, looking at all of the decorations.
“So Blackwater Ridge is pretty remote.” Sam says, pointing toward the area on the map. “It’s cut off by these canyons here, rough terrain, dense forest, abandoned silver and gold mines all over the place.”
“If we…” Mickey’s cut off by her boyfriend.
“Guys, check out the size of this freaking bear.” Dean says, staring at a photo of a man standing behind a much larger bear.
Mickey turns around and walks over, standing beside him.
“Hmm.” She hums an agreement.
“And a dozen or more grizzlies in the area. It’s no nature hike, that’s for sure.” Sam says, after stopping beside his brother.
The voice of a man startles the group causing them to whip around to look at him.
“You boys aren’t planning on going out near Blackwater Ridge by any chance?” The Ranger asks, taking a sip of his coffee.
“Oh, no, sir, we’re environmental study majors from UC Boulder, just working on a paper.” Sam lies, chuckling slightly.
Dean grins and raises his fist. “Recycle, man.”
Without hesitation, the Ranger cuts in.
“Bull.”
Sam’s eyes flick to Dean and Mickey, who don’t move. They just stare at the older man.
“You’re friends with that Haley girl, right?” The ranger asks.
As if Mickey’s in a cartoon, and not real life, a lightbulb turns on in her brain. She smirks softly before nodding.
“Yes. Yes, we are, Ranger…” She glances down at his nametag. “Wilkinson.”
He looks at her up and down slightly, sizing her up.
“Well I will tell you exactly what we told her. Her brother filled out a backcountry permit saying he wouldn’t be back from Blackwater until the 24th, so it’s not exactly a missing persons now, is it?” He says with a strong, annoyed attitude.
Mickey shakes her head slightly, silently answering his question.
“You tell that girl to quit worrying, I’m sure her brother’s just fine.” He continues.
“We will.” Mickey says before biting her lip. “Well that Haley girl’s quite a pistol, ain’t she?”
Ranger Wilkinson looks at Mickey once again and nods sarcastically snorting a little bit.
“That’s putting it mildly.”
“Actually you know what would help? If I could show her a copy of that backcountry permit.” Mickey says, biting her lip slightly.
Sam raises an eyebrow slightly, glancing down at his best friend, wondering what she was doing. Dean realizes what his girlfriend is doing and looks at the Ranger.
“You know, so she could see her brother’s return date.” He continues for her.
The ranger eyes Dean then Mickey, but the eldest Winchester raises his eyebrows at the Ranger, half daring him to return Mickey’s fake flirts, just so Dean can punch the smug look off his face.
Mickey walks out of the Ranger station, reading a piece of paper, with the Winchester boys following behind her like little puppies.
“What? Are you cruising for a threesome or something?” Sam asks, glancing at the couple.
Mickey raises an eyebrow, looking up at her tall friend. “What do you mean?”
“The coordinates point to Blackwater Ridge, so what are we waiting for? Let’s just go find Dad.” He explains his thoughts. “I mean, why even talk to this girl?”
The group stop at the Impala, Dean at the driver’s seat as usual with Mickey beside him and Sam on the other side by the passenger seat.
“I don’t know, maybe we should know what we’re walking into before we actually walk into it?” Mickey shrugs.
Dean raises an eyebrow at his brother causing Sam to hesitate when opening the car door.
“What?”
“Since when are you all ‘shoot first, ask questions later’, anyway?” He asks.
“Since now.” Sam answers before getting into the car.
Dean looks down at his girlfriend which makes her shrug a little, lifting only one arm, holding her hand, palm up to the sky. He rolls his eyes and Mickey giggles quietly. Leaning down, he kisses her forehead softly before opening her door for her. Blushing, she returns his loving gesture by leaning up on her toes a little, and presses her lips against his cheek before climbing into the back seat.
Knocks are heard on the Collins’ front door and the eldest sibling opens the door to reveal three people standing on the other side of a screen door, two men and a woman, all fairly young looking. She raises an eyebrow and before she can voice her thoughts, the handsome man with the bad boy vibe speaks.
“You must be Haley Collins. I’m Dean, this is Michaela and this is Sam. We’re, uh, we’re rangers with the Park Service.”
“Ranger Wilkinson sent us over.” Mickey says, holding a small note pad in her hand. “He wanted us to ask a few questions about your brother Tommy.”
Haley hesitates slightly. “Lemme see some ID.”
Mickey and Dean both pull their IDs out but since Dean is closer to the closed screen door, Haley only pays attention to his official looking badge. Haley raises an eyebrow at Dean after reading the ID, realizing his ID says ‘Samuel Cole’ and not Dean. He smiles slightly and she opens the door, moving to the side.
“Come on in.”
“Thank you.” Mickey says as Dean takes a step in.
Haley looks past them, catching sight of the Impala.
“That yours?” She gestures slightly.
“Yeah.” Dean nods slightly.
She smirks at the eldest Winchester slightly. “Nice car.”
Dean glances back at his girlfriend, raising an eyebrow at her. Mickey giggles slightly before walking past him, following Haley into the kitchen. A teenage boy is sitting at the table with a laptop open in front of him. Mickey pulls a pen out of her pocket and walks around the table while Dean stands next to her and Sam stands behind the teen.
“So if Tommy’s not due back for a while, how do you know something’s up?” Sam asks, looking at Haley.
“He checks in everyday by cell.” She answers, putting a bowl on the table. “He emails, photos, stupid little videos. We haven’t heard anything in over three days now.”
“Does he get good cell reception?” Mickey asks, taking notes.
“He’s got a satellite phone, too.” Haley tells her.
Mickey nods and writes it down.
“Could it be he’s just having fun and forgot to check in?” Dean asks, looking up.
“He wouldn’t do that.” The teenager snaps at the eldest Winchester.
Dean looks down at him who quickly looks away. Haley sighs and puts more food on the table.
“Our parents are gone. It’s just my two brothers, Tommy and Ben here, and me. We all keep pretty close tabs on each other.” She reveals.
“If you don’t mind, can I see the pictures he sent you?” Mickey asks, glancing down at Ben.
Ben nods and goes to stand up from the laptop, but she pulls a chair out so she’s sitting down right next to him. He blushes slightly and moves the computer so it’s in front of her. Mickey watches as he pushes a couple buttons before pointing to the screen.
“That’s Tommy.”
Dean leans down and looks over his girlfriend's shoulder, examining the photo. Mickey waits for a moment before moving to the next image. Suddenly a video starts playing.
“Hey, Haley. Day six. We’re still out near Blackwater Ridge. We’re fine, keeping safe so don’t worry, okay? Talk to you tomorrow.”
Mickey raises an eyebrow as something catches her eye.
“Well, we’ll find your brother.” Sam says, looking up. “We’re heading out to Blackwater Ridge first thing.”
“Then maybe I’ll see you there.” Haley says causing the trio’s heads to snap up. “Look, I can’t sit around here anymore. So I hired a guy. I’m heading out in the morning and I’m gonna find Tommy myself.”
“I think I know how you feel.” Dean says, glancing over at his brother.
“Hey, do you mind forwarding these to me?” Mickey asks, looking at the teen.
He nods and slides the computer back so it’s in front of him.
Later that night, the Winchesters and Mickey are at the local bar, getting a couple drinks. They find a table in the back corner and sit down.
“So, Blackwater Ridge doesn’t get a lot of traffic. Local campers, mostly. But still, this past April, two hikers went missing out there.” Sam pulls John’s journal out of his jacket. “They were never found.”
He opens the journal and begins flipping through it.
“Any before that?” Dean asks, putting his arm around Mickey.
Sam pulls out newspaper articles to show the couple. Mickey snuggles closer to Dean’s side, without a second thought, and looks at the newspaper in Sam’s slightly outstretched hand.
“Yeah. In 1982, eight different people all vanished in the same year. Authorities said it was a grizzly attack.”
The couple begin to read the article which says ‘GRIZZLY BEAR ATTACKS! UP TO EIGHT HIKERS VANISH IN LOST CREEK AREA. HIKERS DISAPPEARANCE BAFFLE AUTHORITIES. Families continue search and rescue efforts in spite of disappointing……’
Mickey looks up at Sam for more information.
“And again in 1959 and again before that in 1936. Every 23 years, just like clockwork.”
She pulls her laptop out of her bag and lays it on the table. As she opens it, she begins to speak, yet never takes her eyes off the screen.
“Alright, while you were driving earlier, I downloaded that guy Tommy’s video to the laptop.”
As she brings up the video, the brothers lean toward her since she’s sitting between them. She puts a button three times and the boys watch as a shadow crosses the screen behind Tommy.
“Do it again.” Dean says, paying close attention.
She repeats her prior movements and gestures to the laptop.
“That’s three frames. That’s a fraction of a second. Whatever that thing is, it can move.” She glances between them.
Dean smirks and leans over, smacking Sam’s arm with his own that was around his girlfriend.
“Told you something weird was going on.”
“Yeah.” Sam sighs before pulling out another newspaper article. “I got one more thing. In ‘59 one camper survived this supposed grizzly attack. Just a kid. Barely crawled out of the woods alive.”
Dean leans over and looks at the article before tilting his head up a little, looking up at his brother.
“Is there a name?”
The trio make it to a house near the woods where an older man, who has to be in his 50-60s, lives alone. The house is pretty trashed. Papers, garbage and cigarette butts in various ash trays around the room. The man, Mr. Shaw, allows the trio into his home. He walks to his small dining room table with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth.
“Look, Ranger, I don’t know why you’re asking me about this. It’s public record.” He turns to face the group. “I was a kid. My parents got mauled by a…”
Sam cuts him off. “Grizzly? That’s what attacked them?”
He takes a puff of his cigarette before taking it out of his mouth as he nods.
“The other people that went missing that year, those bear attacks too?” Dean asks, watching the man.
Mickey looks up at her boyfriend before walking toward the older man.
“If we knew what we were dealing with, we might be able to stop it.” She says, softly.
“I seriously doubt that, ma’am. Anyways, I don’t see what difference it would make.” He says, sitting down. “You wouldn’t believe me anyway. Nobody ever did.”
Sam walks around his best friend before sitting down across from Mr. Shaw.
“Mr. Shaw, what did you see?”
The man hesitates before answering them.
“Nothing.” He says, softly. “It moved too fast to see. It hid too well. I heard it, though. A roar. Like...no man or animal I ever heard.”
“It came at night?” Mickey raises an eyebrow.
The man looks at her, nodding his answer.
“Got inside your tent?” Sam asks.
“It got inside our cabin. I was sleeping in front of the fireplace when it came in. It didn’t smash a window...or break the door. It unlocked it. Do you know of a bear that can do something like that?” He asks, glancing at each of the ‘Rangers’ in front of him. “I didn’t even wake up till I heard my parents screaming.”
“It killed them?” Sam asks him.
“Dragged them off into the night.” He shakes his head. “Why it left me alive...been asking myself ever since.”
The man pauses before reaching for the collar of his shirt.
“Did leave me this, though…”
He pulls down the collar to reveal three long scars...claw marks. Mickey looks at Dean which causes him to glance down at her with knowing eyes. They don’t know exactly what it is but they know...it wasn’t a bear.
“There’s something evil in those woods. It was some sort of demon.” Mr. Shaw says, shaking his head again.
The group finishes getting checked into their motel room that they’re staying at for the night before they continue their conversation about the information Mr. Shaw gave them a little while ago. Dean shakes his head as he walks next to Sam with his hand on Mickey’s lower back.
“Spirits and demons don’t have to unlock doors. If they want inside, they just go through the walls.”
“So it’s probably something else, something corporeal.” Sam says, glancing at Dean.
“Corporeal?” He raises an eyebrow. “Excuse me, professor.”
“Shut up.” Sam rolls his eyes. “So what do you think?”
“The claws, the speed it moves...could be a skinwalker, maybe a black dog.” Mickey speaks up.
“Whatever we’re talking about…” Dean says, stopping, forcing the two others to stop as well. “We’re talking about a creature, and it’s corporeal. Which means we can kill it.”
They walk outside to the Impala and Dean, along with Mickey, walk around to the trunk of the car. The older of the two digs into his pocket, fishing out his keys before he uses them to open the trunk while his girlfriend glances around, silently and instinctively scanning the area as she leans against the trunk beside him.
Dean uses a shotgun to prop open the weapons box next to the dreamcatcher Mickey keeps in there for a small piece of decoration. He grabs the empty duffel bag and starts putting the guns into it that she hands him. Sam leans into the area beside them.
“We cannot let that Haley girl go out there.” He says, softly.
“Oh yeah? What are we gonna tell her?” Dean asks, glancing toward him for a moment before taking another gun from Mickey. “That she can’t go into the woods because of a big scary monster?”
“Yeah.” Sam nods, completely serious.
Dean stands up straight while Mickey closes the bag.
“Her brother’s missing, Sam. She’s not gonna just sit this out. Now we go with her, we protect her and we keep our eyes peeled for our fuzzy predator friend.”
Mickey stands straight and looks at her best friend, holding the bag in her hand.
“You know as soon as we tell her not to go...She’s gonna hurry up and get out there before anyone can stop her.” She says, as Dean takes the bag from her hands.
“Finding Dad’s not enough?” Sam says, ignoring her as he slams the weapons box shut then the trunk. “Now we gotta babysit too? It’s bad enough that we gotta babysit Mickey, but now you wanna babysit another girl?”
Dean looks at his brother, raising an eyebrow.
“Sam, it’s more like Mickey is babysitting you. She’s been doing this just as long as me.” He throws the duffel bag at his brother’s chest. “You got the back seat tomorrow.”
Dean then takes Mickey’s hand, pulling her back inside the hotel room. Usually they’d have gotten a room with two beds, just like they did before Sam went to college, so he can stay in the room with them, but the hotel only had two rooms with one bed, forcing them to split. Mickey uses the room key to open the door and walks inside.
The eldest Winchester sibling shakes his head and pulls the pant legs of his jeans up slightly before sitting down on the bed. He rests his elbows on his knees and rubs his face before sighing.
“Is he different or is it just me?” Dean asks, glancing up at his girlfriend.
“It’s not just you.” She says, slipping her converse off by the door.
“At least I’m not crazy.” He mumbles slightly.
“Well, I didn’t say that.” She teases him slightly.
He raises an eyebrow, watching her for a moment.
“Babe, we hunt things that go bump in the night...we are crazy.” She giggles, standing in front of him.
He wraps his arms around her and pulls her down so she is now sitting on his left knee. She wraps her right arm around his neck and gets comfortable. Using her left hand, she reaches up and fixes his hair slightly. Dean visibly relaxes at her touch and the feeling of her fingers running through his hair.
Mickey smiles softly to herself and continues to play with his hair. Knowing that Dean doesn’t let himself relax often, she’s willing to keep doing this for as long as he wants or needs. Mickey loves seeing her boyfriend relax on the few times he lets himself give into it. She gently presses her lips to the top of his head in a comforting, loving kiss.
“You’re right about that, sweetheart.” He whispers against her chest, referring to her earlier statement.
She kisses his head and whispers. “I’ve known you for 26 years and I don’t think you’ve ever said that…”
He chuckles slightly and nods. “Don’t get used to it, darlin’.”
Mickey giggles slightly and they fall into a comfortable silence, snuggled up in the brace of each other until Dean voices his thoughts after a while.
“Why would Sammy say we’re babysitting you?” He rhetorically asks. “You’ve been doing this a lot longer than he has. I’ve seen you kill more dangerous things than he could ever imagine.”
“Maybe he’s just jealous that he’s not as good as he used to be before he left for Stanford. As good as me. Maybe he’s jealous that you and I as a team handle hunts more effectively and efficiently than a single person. Maybe...he’s jealous that…” Mickey’s voice trails off as she runs out of ideas for why Sam said what he did.
“You think he’s jealous?”
“He has been gone for almost four years, Bean.”
Dean nods slowly. “He was outta this life...but we drug him back in.”
“Exactly. Maybe he’s just jealous that you and I have a bond like nothing else. Maybe...he’s jealous. Or, he could be scared. He did just lose Jess, and she knew nothing of this life. Maybe he forgot how good I am with hunting, and he’s scared that you’re gonna lose me like he lost Jess. Maybe he’s both jealous and scared. Who knows right now? But, I do know that I think he didn’t mean it the way it came when he said what he did.”
He just shrugs before mumbling. “All I know is that, you ain’t leaving. You are not a burden and you ain’t leaving my side...ever…”
Mickey kisses his head once more before dropping her hand from his hair and wrapping both arms around his torso. Resting her cheek against the top of his head, she snuggles as close to him as she possibly can. Dean tightens his arms around her waist, holding her to him. Letting out a deep sigh, he relaxes in her embrace.
“I’m not going anywhere, Dean Henry Winchester, even if you told me to. We’ve made it this far together, 26 years, and we’re going to make it together at least another 26 years. We think Bobby’s old? We’re gonna outlive him! And you know he’s gonna live for a lot longer, stubborn old fool.” Mickey giggles softly. “I’m gonna be right by your side the entire time. And you’re gonna be right there by mine. It’s the Winchester way after all, ain’t it?”
Dean lets a quietly huffed out chuckle slip past his lips before he places a gentle kiss on her collarbone.
“Damn straight it is, baby.”
It’s the next morning and just like Dean said last night, Sam is in the backseat with the duffel bag while Mickey is in the front with Dean. The car is completely silent as the eldest Winchester sibling drives. They finally get the trail that leads to the area that is parked on their map and on the trail is Haley, Ben and a man, Roy, with a large rifle.
“Great. Now there are three more to babysit.” Sam mumbles before getting out of the car.
Mickey glances at Dean before getting out of the vehicle. He turns off the car before getting out. The couple walks around the front where Sam was waiting and then the three of them make their way to the group ahead of them.
“You guys got room for three more?” Dean asks with a smile.
“Wait, you want to come with us?” Haley asks, raising an eyebrow.
“Who are these guys?” Roy glances over at the girl.
“Apparently this is all the park services could muster up for the search and rescue.” Haley rolls her eyes.
Sam walks past the group, leaving Mickey and Dean with the man and Haley.
“You’re Rangers?” Roy asks, looking between the couple.
“That’s right.” Dean says, nodding.
“And you’re hiking out in biker boots and jeans?” Haley asks, checking out the eldest Winchester then looking at his girlfriend. “And you’re in converse and jeans?”
Dean looks down at his outfit which consists of jeans, his normal, well worn boots, a Henley and his leather jacket while Mickey is wearing jeans, converse and a tank top with one of his flannels over it.
“Oh, I don’t do shorts.” He jokes, before ushering Mickey up the trail.
Roy turns, watching them as he speaks.
“What, you think this is funny? It’s dangerous backcountry out there. Her brother might be hurt.”
Dean glances back at them before answering.
“Believe me, we know how dangerous it can be. We just wanna help them find their brother, that’s all.”
He turns around again and continues to usher his girlfriend up the path.
They’ve been walking for about an hour now with Roy leading the group. Mickey and Dean are almost right behind him, walking with Haley and Ben while Sam is bringing up the rear.
“Roy, you said you did a little hunting?” Dean glances at the older man.
“Yeah, more than a little.” Roy says, looking around, scouting the surrounding area.
“Uh-huh.” The Winchester nods, glancing at his girlfriend. “What kind of furry critters do you hunt?”
“Mostly buck, sometimes bear.”
Dean walks around the man while smirking.
“Tell me, uh, Bambi or Yogi ever hunt you back?”
Before he can get too far ahead of Roy, the man grabs his arm as he stops in his tracks.
“Whatcha doing, Roy?” Mickey asks, her instinctive protective mode instantly turning on.
Roy grabs a stick from nearby and pokes a bear trap that Dean had almost stepped in. It snaps shut, snapping the stick like it’s nothing. He smirks over at the oldest Winchester as Haley looks annoyed from behind them.
“You should watch where you’re stepping, Ranger.”
Roy sneers the last word, almost taunting Dean, then drops the stick and retakes the lead, walking ahead of everyone. Dean turns to his girlfriend, a small embarrassed smile on his face.
“It’s a bear trap.”
Mickey playfully rolls her eyes and takes his hand, pulling him after Roy. Haley raises an eyebrow at the man and woman in front of him...holding hands? They’re supposed to be Rangers. Not...a couple? Unless, they’re working and not supposed to be together? Or...they’re not Rangers at all?
She jogs up to the duo and walks in a line with them. She glances at them and their hands again before looking forward.
“You didn’t pack any provisions. You guys are carrying a duffel bag. You’re not Rangers.” She says, grabbing Dean’s arm, stopping them both from walking. “So, who the hell are you?”
Ben walks past the trio, catching up with Roy while Sam stops to watch them for a moment. Dean tilts his head toward the side, silent informing him to keep walking. Sam looks at Mickey and nods, following behind Ben. Dean watches him for a moment before looking down at his girlfriend. She nods slightly and the eldest Winchester looks at Haley.
“Sam and I are brothers and we’re looking for our father. Mickey, here, is my girlfriend and she’s helping us out.” Dean lets Mickey’s hand go and wraps an arm around her waist. “I just figured that you and us, we’re in the same boat.”
She raises an eyebrow, watching the couple. “Why didn’t you just tell me that from the start?”
“I’m telling you now. ‘Sides, it’s probably the most honest I’ve ever been with a woman outside of Mickey.” He smiles down at her. “So we okay?”
Haley pauses before nodding. “Yeah. Okay.”
“And what do you mean I didn’t pack provisions?” Dean says, removing his arm from Mickey and reaches into his jacket.
The girls watch him as he pulls out a large, half eaten bag of Peanut M&Ms. Mickey giggles, shaking her head.
“Come on.” She turns and starts walking up the hill where the others were waiting for them.
Dean smiles at Haley before following behind her, munching on his M&Ms.
The group walk for a few more hours until they near a small clearing in the forest and the Winchester clan look around.
“This is it. Blackwater Ridge.” Roy says, turning toward the group.
Sam walks past the older man, still looking around. “What coordinates are we at?”
He pulls out a GPS, which reads N 35° 45.383, W 111° 00.55.
“35 and -111.” he informs him.
Dean walks up to his younger brother. “You hear that?”
Sam nods softly, listening to the forest which is completely quiet.
“Yeah. Not even crickets.”
“I’m gonna go take a look around.” Roy says, turning away.
“You shouldn’t go off by yourself.” Mickey says, looking at him, noticing something suspicious.
“That’s sweet.” Roy smirks. “Don’t worry about me, sweetheart.”
Roy waves his gun and pushes between Dean and Sam to retake the lead. Dean turns back to the others as Ben and Haley catch up to Mickey who was still standing a few feet away from the Winchesters.
“Alright, everybody stays together.” Dean says, waving his girlfriend toward him. “Let’s go.”
They walk through the trees with Roy slightly out of sight. They’re walking past a large rock when Roy calls out to the group.
“Haley! Over here!”
She jumps over a large, fallen down tree and runs toward Roy’s voice, followed closely by the others. They come to a halt and gasp at the scene before them. There are tents torn open and are bloody while supplies are scattered around the area.
“Looks like a grizzly.”
Mickey looks around the trees before turning toward the tents again. Something catches her eye and she starts walking through the trees.
“Tommy?” Haley calls out, pushing her backpack off her shoulders so it falls to the ground. “Tommy!”
She starts moving through the campsite when Sam moves to catch up with her.
“Shhh…” He tries to quiet her down.
“Shhhhhhh!” Sam says a little louder.
“Why?” Haley glares at the younger, slightly taller Winchester brother.
“Something might still be out there.” He says, looking around.
“Dean! Sam!” Mickey calls out, catching their attention.
Dean runs quickly toward her with his brother following behind him. They find her kneeling down staring at something in the dirt. Kneeling down, Dean tries to see what she’s looking at.
“The bodies were dragged from the campsite.” She gestures. “But here, the tracks just vanish. That’s weird.”
Dean sighs and stands up before putting his hand out for his girlfriend. She takes it and he helps her up.
“I’ll tell you what…” He says, glancing between them. “That’s no skinwalker or black dog.”
Dean ushers Mickey back to the campsite with Sam following. They watch as Haley picks up a bloody flip-up cell phone and starts crying. She turns it over to see the battery was ripped out. Sam kneels down next to her, looking at the phone in her hand.
“Hey, he could still be alive.” He says, glancing at her.
Haley looks at him with a raised eyebrow but she quickly stands up when someone screams.
“Help! Help!!”
Everyone starts running through the trees where they think the voice is coming from...but there’s no one there. The screams are heard again, causing everyone to whip around, searching the trees, trying to figure out where the source of the sound is coming from. However, since the sound seems to surround them, it’s hard to pinpoint an exact location.
“It seemed like it was coming around here, didn’t it?” Haley asks, glancing at the hunters, both natural and supernatural.
They listen around again but the forest is once again, completely silent.
“Everybody back to camp.” Mickey says, immediately turning around, running back through the trees.
They get back to the campsite and everything they brought with them is missing.
“Our packs.” Haley says, breathlessly.
“So much for my GPS and my satellite phone.” Roy complains, kneeling down next to his ripped bag.
“What the hell is going on?” Haley asks, looking at the Winchester trio.
“It’s smart.” Sam answers. “It wants to cut us off so we can’t call for help.”
“You mean someone…” Roy stands up. “...some nutjob...out there just stole all our gear.”
Sam walks over to Dean and Mickey before whispering.
“I need to speak with you. In private.”
They walk to the trees a little ways away from the group.
“Good.” Sam says, turning toward the couple. “Let me see Dad’s journal.”
The tone in his voice leads his older brother to not question him. Dean hands it over and Sam opens it, flipping through until he finds a particular page.
“Check that out.” He says, turning it around to show them.
“Oh come on.” Dean shakes his head.
“Wendigos are in Minnesota woods or...or Northern Michigan. I’ve never even heard of one this far west.” Mickey says, looking at the page.
“Think about it, Mickey. The claws, the way it can mimic a human voice.” Sam explains.
“Great.” Dean sighs, pulling out his pistol. “Then this is useless.”
Sam closes the journal, handing it back to Dean who puts it in his jacket as Sam walks past them.
“We gotta get these people to safety.”
He walks back to the campsite before addressing the group.
“Listen up, it’s time to go. Things have gotten…” He pauses. “More complicated.”
“What?” Haley raises an eyebrow.
“Kid, don’t worry. Whatever’s out there, I think I can handle it.” Roy rolls his eyes.
“It’s not me I’m worried about. If you shoot this thing, you’re just gonna make it mad.” Sam snaps slightly. “We have to leave. Now.”
“One, you’re talking nonsense. Two, you’re in no position to give anybody orders.” Roy says, stepping up to the taller Winchester.
“Relax.” Dean says, walking to them, leaving his girlfriend with the Collins siblings.
“We never should have let you come out here in the first place, alright?” Sam stares down Roy. “I’m trying to protect you.”
“You protect me?” Roy fake laughs. “I was hunting these woods when your mommy was still kissing you goodnight.”
“Yeah?” Sam raises an eyebrow, ignoring the comment about his mom. “It’s a damn near perfect hunter. It’s smarter than you, and it’s gonna hunt you down to eat you alive unless we get your stupid sorry ass out of here.”
Roy laughs. “You know you’re crazy, right?”
“Yeah? You ever hunt a Wen…”
Dean pushes Sam back, cutting off his sentence. Haley runs over and stands between the group so a fight doesn’t break out.
“Stop. Stop it.” Haley snaps. “Look. Tommy might still be alive and I’m not leaving here without him.”
Dean sighs and glances over at his girlfriend who’s busy holding Ben back from walking over to them. He finally relents and says something he didn’t think he’d agree to.
“It’s getting late. This thing is a good hunter in the day but an unbelievable hunter at night. We’ll never beat it...not in the dark. We need to settle in and protect ourselves.” Dean says, looking back at Haley.
“How?” She raises an eyebrow.
Ben and Mickey put together a campfire while Dean draws something in the dirt around them.
“One more time, that’s…?” Haley watches the Winchester brothers.
“Anasazi symbols. It’s for protection.” Mickey answers, dropping more wood down next to her.
“The Wendigo can’t cross over them.” Dean continues her thoughts.
Roy laughs, gun over his shoulder as he stands nearby.
“Nobody likes a skeptic, Roy.”
Dean rolls his eyes before walking over to his brother. He sits down next to him, resting his elbows on his knees.
“You wanna tell me what’s going on in that freaky head of yours?” He asks, softly.
“Dean…” Sam sighs, glancing around the camp.
“No, you’re not fine. You’re like a powder keg, man, it’s not like you. I’m supposed to be the belligerent one while Mickey is the sexy one, remember?” Dean glances at him. “You’re the clear-headed, logical one.”
Sam hesitates before speaking.
“Dad’s not here. I mean, that much we know for sure, right? He would have left us a message, a sign, right?”
“Yeah, you’re probably right.” Dean laces his fingers together in front of him while his elbows stay on his knees. “Tell you the truth, I don’t think Dad’s ever been to Lost Creek.”
“Then let’s get these people back to town and let’s hit the road. Go find Dad. I mean, why are we still even here?”
“This is why?” Dean moves so he’s not sitting across from Sam and pulls out John’s journal. “This book. This is Dad’s single most valuable possession...everything he knows about every evil thing is in here. And he passed it to us. I think he wants us to pick up where he left off. You know, saving people, hunting things. The family business.”
Sam shakes his head, looking at his older brother. “That makes no sense. Why doesn’t he just...call us? Why doesn’t he...tell us what he wants, tell us where he is?”
“I dunno. But the way I see it, Dad’s giving us a job to do, and Mickey and I intend to do it.”
“Dean...No. I gotta find Dad. I gotta find Jessica’s killer. It’s the only thing I can think about.” Sam pauses. “If it was Mickey, you would have told everyone to screw off and went and searched every inch of the planet, searching for Dad.”
The eldest Winchester sibling sighs, knowing his brother is right.
“Alright, Sam, we’ll find them, I promise. Listen to me.” He says causing Sam to look up slightly. “You’ve gotta prepare yourself. I mean, this search could take awhile and all that anger, you can’t keep it burning over the long haul. It’s gonna kill you and I ain’t letting you take it out on me or her...You gotta have patience, man.”
Sam looks down at his hands before looking at Dean again.
“How do you do it? How does Dad do it?” Sam asks.
Dean looks over at Mickey who is giggling softly with Ben and Haley, trying to keep their spirits up.
“Well, for one...Them.” He gestures over to the group. “I mean, I figured our family’s so screwed to hell, maybe we can help some some others. And...And Mick makes things a little more bearable.” He pauses before continuing. “I’ll tell you what else helps. Killing as many evil sons of bitches as I possibly can.
Sam smiles slightly but jumps up when a twig snaps and screaming is heard.
“Help me! Please!”
Mickey wraps her arms around Ben as they stand up, not wanting the young teen to run after the voice.
“Help!” Screams are heard again.
Dean stands and readies his gun as Sam shines a flashlight through the trees.
“He’s trying to draw us out.” Dean says, glancing around. “Just stay cool, stay put.”
“Inside the magic circle?” Roy rolls his eyes.
The Wendigo screams again and the older man points his gun at the round as loud growling is heard.
“Okay, that’s no grizzly.”
“It’s okay.” Mickey says, calming Ben down. “You’ll be alright, I promise.”
Something rushes past them and Haley shrieks, catching a small peek at the creature.
“It’s here.” Sam mumbles.
Roy shoots at the rustling once...twice before cheering to himself.
“I hit it!”
He runs into the trees to see what he hit but Dean calls out to him. Roy doesn’t listen and continues to run, hoping that he killed it. Dean turns to his girlfriend as he backs up toward the area Roy ran.
“Don’t move. Keep them here.”
She nods and watches as he and Sam run after Roy.
It’s early the next morning and Mickey is leaning against Dean, trying to stay awake since they didn’t get much sleep throughout the night. Sam is sitting against a hollow tree stump, holding John’s journal and playing with a lanyard attached to it. Haley has her arm around her little brother before glancing over at the couple.
“I don’t...I mean, these types of things, they aren’t supposed to be real.”
“I wish I could tell you different.” Dean says, playing with Mickey’s hair.
“How do we know it’s not out there watching us?” Haley raises an eyebrow.
“We don’t.” Mickey mumbles. “But we’re safe for now.”
“How do you guys know about this stuff?” She continues to interrogate them.
Dean pauses, glancing down at his girlfriend. “Kind of runs in the family.”
Sam walks over, cutting off their conversation.
“Hey, so we’ve got half a chance in the daylight and I for one want to kill this evil son of a bitch.” He says, looking around the group.
“Well, hell, you know we’re in.” Dean says, softly patting his girlfriend's shoulder.
They stand up as Sam shows the Collins’ the page from John’s journal.
“‘Wendigo' is a Cree Indian word. It means ‘evil that devours.’” Sam explains.
“They’re hundreds of years old. Each one was once a man.” Dean continues.
“Sometimes an Indian or other times a frontiersman or miner or hunter.” Mickey finishes.
“How’s a man turn into one of those things?” Haley asks, glancing up.
Dean begins to explain as he picks up a few things off the ground.
“Well it’s always the same. During some harsh winter a guy finds himself starving, cut off from supplies or help. Becomes a cannibal to survive, eating other members of his tribe or camp.”
“Like the Donner Party.” Ben says, glancing between the brothers.
“Cultures all over the world believe that eating human flesh gives a person certain abilities.” Sam says.
“Speed, strength, immortality.” Mickey says, getting into more detail.
“If you eat enough of it, over years, you become this less than human thing. You’re always hungry.” Dean says, fumbling around with stuff in his hands.
“So if that’s true, how can Tommy still be alive?” Haley raises an eyebrow.
“You’re not gonna like it.” Mickey says, glancing at the brothers.
“Tell me.” She says, turning toward the other female.
Mickey takes in a deep breath before explaining.
“More than anything, a Wendigo knows how to last long winters without food. It hibernates for years at a time, but when it’s awake it keeps its victims alive. It, uh, it stores them so it can feed whenever it wants. If your brother’s alive, it’s keeping him somewhere dark, hidden and safe. We gotta track it back there.”
“And then how do we stop it?” Haley asks.
“Well, guns are useless, so are knives. Basically….” Dean says, holding up a can of lighter fluid, a beer bottle and a white cloth. “We gotta torch the sucker.”
The group walks through the woods, trying to find a small cave or hole somewhere but nothing is coming up. So far the only thing they found was trees with claw marks and blood. Sam leads the group with Ben and Mickey behind him followed by Haley then Dean bringing up the rear. The youngest Winchester sibling looks around and raises an eyebrow, stopping in his tracks.
“Mickey?” He glances at her.
She jogs forward slightly and looks up at him.
“What’s up?”
He looks around which causes her to look around with him. There are bloody claw marks and broken branches everywhere they look.
“You know, I was thinking, those claw mark prints...so clear and distinct. They were almost too easy to follow.”
Loud growling is heard causing Sam, Mickey and Dean, who is still in the back, to whip around, trying to catch a glimpse of the monster. Trees rustle around them but they can’t see anything. Haley backs up against a tree, terrified when she feels something drip on her shirt. She slowly looks down to see a small red liquid…
Blood.
She looks up and screams before leaping out of the way as Roy’s corpse lands exactly where she stood. Dean runs up and kneels down next to Roy as Sam walks over to Haley, helping her off the ground, where she landed.
“You okay?” Sam asks Haley, who nods before he looks at Dean. “You got it?”
“His neck is broken.” Dean says, standing up.
Growling is heard again…far too close for their liking.
“Okay, run, run, run, run, go, go, go, go!” Dean yells, pointing in a direction.
The group starts running, following Dean’s direction. The order is Haley, Dean, Mickey, Ben with Sam bringing up the rear. During the run, Ben trips and on his way down, he grabs Mickey’s shirt. Since he was falling forward, he pulls her backward so she lands slightly on him. She squeals loudly, not expecting to be pulled.
Sam runs up to them, reaching for Mickey first.
“I gotcha. I gotcha. Come on.” He says, helping them up.
In the distance, Haley and Dean hear Mickey’s squeal and stop in their tracks, turning around.
“Mick?” Dean calls out, looking for her. “Mick!”
Growls are heard behind them and their eyes widen. They slowly turn around to see the Wendigo standing right there. Haley screams which Ben, Mickey and Sam hear.
“Haley?” Ben calls out.
They run toward her screams and stop when they notice Dean’s Molotov Cocktail broken on the ground.
“Dean?” Mickey calls out, whipping around, searching the trees. “Dean!”
Of course, no one replies.
“Come on. Let’s go back to…” Sam starts, looking at Mickey.
“Dean!” She screams, looking around.
“Mick…” He tries again.
“No!” She snaps. “We are looking for Dean now! I ain’t going anywhere without him!”
“Mickey…”
She ignores him and walks past him in the direction they were heading before. Sam sighs and looks at Ben, tilting his head toward her. Ben nods and jogs forward, catching up with her. The youngest Winchester knows that if Mickey is on a mission, she doesn’t back down. There’s only one person that’s ever been able to calm her down...and he’s kidnapped.
They walk for about ten minutes when Ben speaks up.
“If it keeps its victims alive, why would it kill Roy?” He glances at the best friends.
“Honestly? I think because Roy shot at it.” Sam answers.
“It pissed him off so it killed him.” Mickey says, looking around for any evidence.
Ben stops in his tracks as something to his right catches his eye. He smiles softly and grabs Mickey’s arm, stopping her from walking anymore. She turns around, glancing down at the teenager.
“They went this way.” He points to his right.
Mickey raises an eyebrow and looks down, smiling to herself. She bends over and picks up a Peanut M&M. Sam catches up to them and chuckles at the candy in her hand.
“It’s better than breadcrumbs.” He smiles at his brother’s girlfriend.
“I knew it was a good idea for him to buy a huge bag. Let’s go!” She says, following the trail.
Ben and Sam follow her for a while until they reach a mine entrance marked with a sign that says ‘Warning! Danger! Do Not Enter Extremely Toxic Material’. Mickey glances back at Sam, pulling a small flashlight out of her pocket. He shrugs and helps her open the door. Ben follows them closely as they walk in.
Mickey shines the flashlight ahead of them, noticing different tunnels in front of them. At the sound of growling, she immediately turns the flashlight off. She moves so her back is against the wall while Sam pulls him over as well. The Wendigo comes toward them, forcing Sam to cover Ben’s mouth before he can scream.
The Wendigo takes a different tunnel at the crossing so the trio takes the tunnel it came from, instinctively knowing that’s where their people are. Mickey reaches back, taking a hold of Sam’s jacket, making sure he stays close to her. She doesn’t want to lose another Winchester. As they walk, the floorboards creak so they slow down.
Mickey raises an eyebrow when the creak gets a little louder but they’re not even walking that fast. She glances back at Sam who is just as confused. He looks behind them to see that the only thing behind them is Ben so they know it’s not the Wendigo. She looks down at her feet and her eyes widen just as they fall through the floor.
They groan from the impact and cough as dust flies around them. Ben sits up and waves the dust away but he comes face to face with a human skull. He jumps and starts crawling backward. Sam stops him, whispering softly.
“It’s okay. It’s okay.”
Mickey coughs and looks up, gasping slightly. She jumps up from the ground and runs over to three figures hanging by their wrists from the ceiling.
“Dean.” She whispers, cupping his cheeks.
Sam looks up at her voice and jumps up, running after her.
“Dean!” He says, shaking him slightly.
He shakes his head slightly, opening his eyes.
“Babe, you okay?” Mickey whispers, looking his face over.
He winces as he nods slightly. “Yeah.”
Ben has also noticed one of the figures being Haley so he wakes her up as well. Sam pulls a knife out of his pocket and carefully cuts his brother down, letting his best friend help him to an empty patch of floor. He then cuts down Haley, helping Ben bring her to the ground as well. Dean groans and tries moving, but pain flares through his body, coming from almost every spot inside him.
“You sure you’re alright?” Mickey asks him, moving his hair from his forehead.
“Yeah.” Dean grimaces, but allows her. “Yep. Where is he?”
“He’s gone for now.” Sam answers, looking over at their new friends.
Haley divests herself of rope and jumps up after spotting her brother, Tommy, hanging by his wrists as well.
“Tommy…” She whispers, tearing slightly.
She cups his cheek which causes his head to jerk up, his movements still sluggish from the fatigue coursing through his muscles. She jumps back and shrieks before she immediately turns to Sam.
“Cut him down!”
As Sam cuts down the very wounded man, Mickey helps Dean off the ground and he pulls her in for a tight hug. She happily hugs him back, burying her face against his chest. He kisses her head and holds her close when something catches his eye. He walks over to a pile of stolen supplies that are in the corner.
Slowly leaning down, he picks up two items and smirks.
“Check it out.”
“Flare guns.” Mickey chuckles slightly.
“Those’ll work.” Sam grins.
Dean laughs and twirls them as if he’s a cowboy. He hands one of the guns to Sam before taking his girlfriend’s hand, pulling her toward the tunnel, wanting to get out of the death trap that is the former mine. Sam walks behind her, but ahead of Haley and Ben who’s supporting Tommy as he limps.
All six of them pause their movements and steps as they hear growling coming from deeper into the tunnel. The sound gets a little closer, letting them know that the once human but now monster that is the Wendigo is coming back.
“Looks like someone’s home for supper.” Dean says, trying to look further ahead.
“We’ll never outrun it.” Haley says to them.
Dean looks back at his brother and girlfriend.
“You thinking what I’m thinking?” He asks, raising an eyebrow.
“Yeah, I think so.” Sam nods.
Mickey sighs and nods. “Just...be careful.”
“Always.” He leans down, kissing her softly before looking at the Collins’. “Listen to me. Stay with Mick and Sam. They’re gonna get you out of here.”
“What are you gonna do?” Haley asks.
He smirks at her, not giving her a verbal answer. Dean turns back to his girl, and kisses Mickey once more before walking down the tunnel.
“Chow time, you freaky bastard!” He yells. “Yeah, that’s right, bring it on, baby! I taste good!!”
Mickey rolls her eyes at her boyfriend as his yelling soon becomes indistinct before turning to Sam.
“Come on!”
She turns down a tunnel before picking up her speed with the group of siblings following right behind her. She stops in her tracks when she hears growling and Sam quickly pushes her behind him, holding the flare gun up.
“Get them out of here.” He tells her.
“Sam…” She starts but he cuts her off.
“Go! Dean will kill me if you get hurt! Go!”
She sighs and begins to lead the group down another tunnel, hoping it leads to the door. Sam holds the flare gun up again, ready to shoot as he walks slowly down another tunnel. He hears growling from just a few feet behind him so he whips around. The Wendigo is right in his face. Sam shoots at it but misses, no doubt pissing the monster off more than it already is.
His eyes widen and he runs down the tunnel Mickey took the family.
“Sam!” Mickey calls out, hearing his loud footsteps.
“Come on!” He yells, coming up behind them.
They run to the end of the tunnel with the Wendigo right behind them. Since it’s a dead-end, Sam turns around and puts his arms out, covering the family and his best friend.
“Stay behind me.”
They hide behind him since he is large enough to cover them all. The Wendigo approaches, taking its time since the family is at a dead-end, knowing they’re trapped. Dean sneaks up behind the creature and glaring at it since it’s too close to his girlfriend for his liking.
“Hey!” He calls out.
The creature turns around and he shoots it in the stomach. The flare goes off and the Wendigo goes up in flames right before their eyes. When it turns to ash, Dean smirks at the group.
“Not bad, huh?”
Mickey giggles and runs around her best friend to her boyfriend, throwing her arms around his neck. He holds her close, tucking his face against the side of her neck.
Later that night, an ambulance is loading up Tommy while Mickey is getting patched up by a paramedic close by. Two police officers interview Ben while Sam stands behind him, arms crossed. They have already come up with a story to tell the police and they know exactly what explanation to use, that the authorities will no doubt believe.
“And the bear came back again after you yelled at it?” The officer asks the young teen.
“That’s when it circled the campsite. I mean, this grizzly must have weighed 800-900 pounds.” He explains.
The officer looks at Sam who nods at Ben’s story.
“Alright, we’ll go after it first thing.” The second officer says.
Haley walks over to Dean who is leaning against the Impala, watching his girlfriend get patched up from afar. He smiles to himself. Sam told him how Mickey was freaking out when he got kidnapped. He knew that was going to happen. It wouldn’t be the first time where something’s happened to him and she freaked out.
He remembers one time he, his Dad and Mickey were hunting vampires in North Carolina and he was bait. She freaked out on John for coming up with the plan. He’s surprised his Dad didn’t yell at her, but that was one thing he has never done. John raised Mickey as his own but she will always be the ‘princess’ despite the world they grew up in.
“Hey, Dean.” Haley says, stopping beside him.
He looks away from the ambulance and smiles softly. “Hey.”
“So, I...I know how I can thank you.” She smirks.
He chuckles and shakes his head, knowing what she means.
“Yeah, that ain’t gonna happen, sweetheart.”
Her smile falls from her face as she raises an eyebrow.
“What? Why?”
“Because, as I’ve said, I’ve got a girlfriend.”
“So?”
He chuckles and shakes his head. “Sorry. Not happening.”
Standing straight, he smiles at Mickey who walks over with the paramedic.
“You riding with your brother?” The paramedic asks Haley.
“Yeah.” She nods and looks at Dean. “Well, I hope you find your father.”
She walks over and gets Ben from Sam before walking to the ambulance. Mickey smiles and leans against the car with Dean.
“What was that about?” She asks, putting her head on his shoulder.
He chuckles and wraps an arm around her.
“You don’t wanna know, darlin’.”
Sam walks over and sits on the other side of Dean, watching the ambulance pack up.
“Man, I hate camping.” Dean says, watching the scene.
“Me too.” Sam says as the vehicle turns on it’s sirens and begins to drive away.
The brothers stare straight ahead, watching the fading emergency vehicle. Dean has his arm wrapped around Mickey’s shoulders, holding her close, enjoying the warm coming from her being tucked safely against his side. Sam just stares ahead, his jaw tightened, and an exhausted and drained look on his face.
“Sam, you know we’re gonna find Dad, right?”
“Yeah, I know.” He nods before smirking at Dean. “But in the meantime? I’m driving.”
The three members of the Winchester family, blood and not, push themselves up off the front of the cherished family car. Dean tosses the keys up to Sam who catches them expertly. The Winchesters walk to the driver’s and passenger’s seat while Mickey walks to the back seat behind her boyfriend.
They all settle into the classic Chevy Impala, slamming the doors almost in sync. Sam starts up the engine, the purr of the older engine echoing in the silence of the night, and drives off.
