i haven't even finished my current playthrough of bg3 but i'm already thinking of my next one. a durge that tries their best to be good, but is such a coward. they won't fight with the emerald grove, but they won't fight against it either. sometimes they do good things to ease the guilt of what they've done to others. they feel guilty about doing things just bc they feel guilty. they're a bard, all of their confidence is a performance, all of their quips and charm practiced a thousand times over. there's a pattern to it - to everything. but deep down they're such a coward. they're so scared of the tadpole and not remembering their past and of dying and they just want to get out of here as fast as they can. then they find out about their past. they're more afraid than ever, afraid of their father, afraid of who they are. when it comes to it, will they have the courage to stand against their father? or will they take the easy way out, and gain the safety of immeasurable power at the cost of numerous lives.

and it can be worse, they can be romancing astarion. they both have a similar choice, to do what's right, or do horrific things in order to gain power that corrupts, corrupts so that there is no room for fear, not anymore

Hi 😻 I would absolutely love to yap about it! I'm gonna go through all the bases for the theory and touch a little bit on alternate theories bc it's fun to listen to multiple viewpoints even if I will always think that he's trans

It's technically just a theory/hc but since when has that ever stopped me?

So the Peacefield music video came out today and in it, there are vintage looking clips of a young girl ~12 playing in the fields (*cough cough like the twins in rhrn*) who isn't named in the credits or anything. There are a few theories surrounding who she is: some people think that she's just a one-off character to tell a story (which they have done before so it makes sense), some people think that she's sister (which is plausible as she had a religious upbringing and there are nuns in the vid, though she wasn't raised by nuns so it leaves the question of why the nuns are parenting the kids if it's sister).

Some people (me) think that it's perpetua and/or the character in lachryma. And that both mvs tell the story about where V came from. (Which is furthered through satanized and the theory that bald-guy isn't physically perpetua, but the mv is priest-Tobias seeing his true self reflecting in his inability to save people from sin, despite trying to pray the anti-pope away and stay faithful to god by helping others to find god...if that makes sense? It's a huuuuuge stretch but it's fun to think about) And this is my fav theory!

Peacefield started with the graveyard, which at first feels like a very strong sister reference bc of rhrn, and it still could be! But then it just reminded me so much of Lachryma. The Perpetua music video in an identical setting containing a young woman who looks very similar to the girl in peacefield (and dare I say perpetua).

It makes sense if Lachryma is perpetua telling somebody else's story, that's what most songs are. But it's FUN to imagine it being perpetua inside the castle (still trapped in old habits/suffering) and outside (after they decide to step up and say 'I'm done', embracing the evil creature behind them). So if you do want to assume that the person in lachryma is perpetua, and if you do agree that they look very similar to the girl in peacefield, this is what we are left with:

(Random other point: the papas don't typically wear the collars so it's interesting that perpetua does, and Tobias also plays the priest in satanized, who ofc wears one. And the ghouls being the clergy is a fun reference but also...the priest is in charge of his clergy and perpetua then goes on to be papa, leading the ghouls and they just FEEL intentionally paralleled beyond the meta 'haha look it's the real band!'. All 4 characters are the same person imo!)

MOVING ON. here are some interesting frames in Peacefield:

1) the girl being imposed over Perpetua, as if she has the mask. 2) perpetua over a skull that had been held in the virgin mary's hand (not necessarily related to the theory, just fun to look at). 3) perpetua placed over the field AND the woman running in it (this is held for a while). Also see the clip of the black cloak and shoes in the grass with absolutely no explanation, I think that is Perpetua. 4) Perpetua imposed over a praying nun

And there's this clip of presumably boy/girl twins playing in a field from Peacefield. Which seems........familiar!

Additional point: in chapter 20, Marika specifically mentions that they're fraternal twins. A throwaway comment? Perhaps. A reference to how different Tobias looks without the Copia prosthetics? Likely.

But for the most part, identical twins can't be the opposite sex so my silly little brain decided that's a hint :) also we still don't know where Perpetua was raised, it wasn't the psaltarians, it probably wasn't sister but yk, it technically shouldn't be Nihil bc he didn't know about the boys (despite what v may say live, which I think is Tobias having a script/slipping back to Cardi)

SO! My personal headcanon regarding perpetua unless the real lore ends up being more fun: he ended up being raised in a convent after being given up out of desperation/unwillingly, he realised he was trans when he was around 25 and managed to transition but still felt like something was missing. Was able to maintain his place in the church somehow but kept feeling a nagging feeling that something was wrong with him. Eventually it got too much and was forced to admit that he couldn't hide behind exorcisms and helping others find god, just wasn't a man of god. The guy in satanized isn't perpetua, he is merely a way of artistically showing priestpetua his true nature. The ministry call out to him and he accepts. He possibly knows judith from the church but I still don't know where I want this to go.

You don't have to take this too seriously, it'll most likely end up being nothing, I just like overanalysing and creating trans headcanons :)

Personally, I've loved the idea of trans Perpetua being raised in a convent since satanized came out but this just made me more insane about it 😭

he would pay 100% he doesn't even give you a chance to try and pay for anything (he´s nice when he wants to be)

he definitely brought a book with him to read(+ one for you) and would either let you talk while he reads a "little", or he would just read out loud so you know what kind of books he likes

he´s not good at doing any kind of romantic things, but he did try and do something

that including:

taking you out on the date later in the evening so he later could show you the stars, and point out some constellations

asking your friends (and maybe family) what you like food-wise, so he knows what kind of place he should have in mind when picking the place of your date

That's the cool thing about trans headcanons or even just having trans characters in general, there's really no one way to go about them and it's more about what speaks to you + how you think the character would present. Trans people have wildly varying bodies for wildly varying reasons and I think that's fuckin awesome because you can do so much with them in art. The bishops especially can allow for fun body type headcanons, cause you can't really see their bodies in their god forms, and their follower forms are just a preset asset used for ALL followers. They can look literally however you want which is cool!

I can't make the decision for you, but I will say this: I like drawing the bishops' god forms as completely neutral, weird animal things because they're magical eldritch deities that defy logic. But forever ago I thought it'd be funny if when they wake up in their follower forms, they're stuck in lame mortal bodies that have to conform to nature (no more leshy fidget slug, no more kallamar tentacles, etc), and just went with it. Sooo the decision on if leshy binds or not was entirely secondary to that, I'd say just go off of how your lore works and if a worm doesn't seem like it'd come pre-installed with mammaries, then don't worry about it!

The Stupidity of hating on fanon, featuring Jegulus.

Alright folks,

Welcome to another one of my rants because I found out that there are jegulus haters on tumblr. I have not encountered one but I saw it on my mutuals' page and I had some words (a lot of words) to say.

So let's get started...

One of the main complaints is saying that 'James would never fall for Regulus.' Umm...child, do you know what fanfic is? What fanon is? If not let me spell it out for you- it's made up. Something that is not canon and created by fans by employing their imaginations. We are not saying that James would fall for Regulus in canon at all, so please don't come barging in with your opinions. So yes, we don't really care about canon anyways.

Secondly, the argument of 'Regulus being a terrible person and pureblood supremacist' is really weak. Alright, he was a pureblood supremacist and was involved in terrible things. But do you know what else he was? He was just a 17 year old boy who grew up in an abusive household. A boy who had lost his big brother and had to learn survival at an age too young. He grew up before his time and was so traumatized that he always wanted to please his parents and do as they wish. Regulus was just another victim and he also was the one who ended up being the catalyst to Voldemort's defeat. As someone who studies psychology, viewing a person on the surface is the biggest sign of ignorance and it really shows. As for 'being terrible' then let's not forget that canon James wasn't all sunshine and rainbows either. He improved ofc, but he was still an asshole when he was young. Also, we really don't have enough background on canon Regulus to place him in one box. I love that some people want to believe him as good and fill in the blanks by writing something redeeming.

Then comes the 'it's a misogynistic ship'. Now, I won't argue it fully because I do think there are some people out there who don't like Jily bc they hate Lily. But, from what I've seen majority shippers ship both of them interchangeably or in a polyarmorous sense too. In fact, most jegulus shippers are also Marylily and pandalily shippers too. I really can't see anything misogynistic in it. I've actually read some great fics where Lily is a strong independent woman who is fierce and an overall queen.

And, if the 'canon' of it bothers you too much, then you should check out early Jegulus fics like Choices where nothing is sugar-coated. James still ends up with Lily. But in the end, it leaves you thinking and rooting for them anyways. The more new Jegulus fics are on a fluffier side but that fluff came in after bearing the pain of the full of angst fics like Choices.

Another thing should be noted is that these characters are also a big part of queer community. I've seen so many fans exploring themselves through these characters. Like Regulus as Trans is becoming a popular headcanon and it shows that through creative expression people are finding a safe place to explore. And if you're a bigot then...that is frankly a you problem. One I, or jegulus fans, don't want any part of.

In the end, my motive is not to convince you of shipping these two. It clearly started as a crackship, one even I stumbled upon accidentally. But the fandom has made it into something really beautiful and I think instead of spreading hate we should accept it. There are more problematic pairings to be concerned about, trust me. This one is the least of them all.

There is no point you can argue about with anything substantial. Because in the end it's fanon. Let fans do what they want and if you don't like it then ignore. No one is forcing it on you.

Hi! I’m not a follower but I came across your post while browsing the arcane tag and I was curious bc I’d only heard positive things about the show re: representation so far. I went ahead and rewatched the scene you shared the image of and here’s what I’d say—

i don’t remember much about the character on the left, I think they’re only in there for that brief scene where we see them react as some rando gets thrown out of the brothel theyre standing in front of. They’re not treated like a joke, they just exist.

the one on the right is a yordle which is a race from LoL/arcane, which is why she looks “funko pop” esque. side note, she’s not the only yordle in the show and not all yordles are in the undercity. she’s only in one scene but has a somewhat important role. She’s not treated as a joke at all. When she seductively curls a finger at one of the side characters and he shies away and grimaces, I took that more as a kid (like a 13 year old) being creeped out that a lady old enough to be his grandma is trying to pull him into the brothel.

the whole scene this is a part of is just us being introduced to the city (“the undercity”) the main characters live in, it’s dark, it’s grimy, it’s the underbelly. We see shots of a lot of different types of creatures, different types of people, different races. The primary thing being portrayed here is how dangerous and non kid friendly the place is, as we see lots of criminals, shady characters, and ofc the aforementioned brothel.

all that being said, I’m not trans so I could be missing something here, but I feel like the screenshot is somewhat taken out of context. I myself had to go back and watch the scene to remember what happened.

Also, I really love the show and I think it’s a shame people are shying away from it because it’s based off league. Ofc you don’t have to watch anything you don’t want to, but it’s a great standalone story and I have a lot of friends who watched it despite hating league (and league players) and still enjoyed it!

hating on an annoying insta author bc i’m a bitch: page powars part 1

prefacing this with saying that i don’t think this person is bad or problematic, just extremely annoying and fulfills my need to indulge in haterism. so don’t harass the author or anything

the instagram algorithm was so kind as to introduce me to an instagram author named page powers. he is currently promoting his book “and they were roommates” (yes it’s named after an outdated vine meme, already off to a great start). rest under the cut bc it’s long

the premise of his book is that the mc dates a guy, the two of them break up, the mc realizes he is trans and transitions to male, and then after some unspecified amount of time they are paired up as roommates at school, and the guy doesn’t recognize mc. this is all that i have learned about the plot or characters from page’s insta other than that it’s SO GAY and TRANS and the love interest is “howl-inspired” (howl of moving castle fame ofc) i do not know anything else about this book or other characters.

oh and one other thing. based on this information how old would you guess the characters are? my guess would be 18, right? like they dated freshman year hs, broke up sophomore year, mc transferred out and began transitioning junior year which gives him enough time to become unrecognizable from what he looked like when he dated love interest. then they happen to go to the same college and are assigned to be roommates. hijinks ensue.

well if you made that very reasonable guess you would be WRONG! they are FIFTEEN! which makes so much less sense. my guess is they started dating at 13, broke up at 14 and within like a year somehow mc was already unrecognizable? i also think no 15-year-old can realistically be howl-esque. and i’m sorry but this whole plot is less impactful this way bc a middle school relationship is not a real relationship.

also what age demographic would this even be for? i feel like most ya readers want to read about characters slightly older than them, especially when it comes to romance. so would this be for 13-14 year olds? but i feel like 13 to 14 year olds aren’t interested in this kind of modern-au-fanfiction-with-the-serial-numbers-filed-off kind of stuff. they like romance, yes, but usually with other sci-fi or fantasy aspects. was i just an insufferable tomboy or was nobody into pure, modern romance before the age of 15-16? i feel like people don’t get into fanficesque books until they are at least 15 and interest in that kind of stuff probably peaks in late teens early 20’s. and this may not be universal but i feel like younger adults reading this kind of wish fulfillment or fanfic-y romance usually want to read about characters their age or older, because they want to imagine they can look forward to a storybook romance. it’s why all those ali hazelwood not!reylo books are about like grad students.

so who is served by making the characters 15? it would make more sense and probably have wider appeal if they were 18 i feel. the author is clearly way above 15 (i don’t know his exact age but i’m guessing like. 27) so i don’t see why it would be easier to write about kids. i’ll get into this later but i also don’t think that it was originally fanfiction about 15 year old anime boys, more likely it’s 20-something dudes from a gacha game. i don’t think this choice is problematic per say just baffling. or maybe i’m just out of touch and there is a market for stories about 15 year olds among the fanfiction-as-literature crowd. i guess heartstopper is a thing.

queering futurity in crooked kingdom

if I had any real time for this (I do not) I'd be tempted to write a real essay about it, but I have a dissertation and two other real essays for my actual degree, so let's do a bad tunglr bullet point analysis. I'm... largely generalising and paraphrasing here, and I suspect this has a billion things to iron out or that I forgot about, but I hope this might be a bit interesting regardless of how much you may or may not know abt queer literary theory lmao.

in extreme short, there is a subset of queer theory around what is, in essence, queer time. there is a heteronormative future/'futurity', and it is marriage, children, a good job, a nice house, and dying at a good age after a fulfilling life. queer* and trans people both reject and often cannot access this: plenty couldn't/cannot get married or have children, or had to surpass lots of obstacles to do so, many queer and trans people were or are killed young, or died prematurely in the aids crisis. and so we get queer temporality; a resistance to the heteronormative future that is refused or inaccessible, and to reproductive futurism; the concept that people value the future over the present... and this manifests in kicking back against things like the symbolic 'child' as a representative of futurity. not real children, but empty platitudes like think of the children! think of the future for your children! there can also be a development of a death drive, which is sometimes literal and sometimes metaphorical, which is, again, basically a rejection of 'the future'.

while the grishaverse doesn't have homophobia as such, you can still do queer readings, bc it is ofc influenced by our world, by virtue of being Written By A Person From Our World. and especially in kerch, there's still stuff like patrilineal inheritance... buuuut reproductive futurity & friends are very deliberately destroyed by the end of crooked kingdom. mostly by the usual culprit (taps sign that says IT'S KAZ AGAIN LOL) but by the narrative and the other characters as well. walk w me! I don't think this is a real analysis more just a lot of Thoughts but... nvm

*used here as an umbrella term since the theory I'm pulling from is the field of queer theory

the two men (van eck and rollins) who are most concerned with reproductive futurism (having heirs and a legacy, 'building something that will outlast them'), are promptly buried under the rubble of their building efforts by our usual culprit. kaz uses the mentality of legacy and lineage against them both; he kidnaps van eck's pregnant wife to use as a bargaining chip, and he uses rollins's son and heir against him, because he knows what's most important to these men is their line, their work being handed down. he deduces that rollins has a son through rollins' vanity around building something to 'last', and his naming of the kaelish prince. rollins is literally themed around monarchy and descent; the king of the barrel, the kaelish prince, the emerald palace. kaz, for his part, is the bastard of the barrel. the illegitimate son, not produced by any conventional family structure, ketterdam his mother and profit his father... and therefore he is the perfect person to blow up this imagined monarchy

wylan is rejected by van eck for his disability, for being supposedly incapable of continuing his father's legacy; and so we gather that the actual child doesn't matter to van eck, it's what The Child represented to him, which was the future of the van eck company. the illegitimate kaz restores van eck's disowned son to the succession through sheer trickery, and jan van eck's trading empire is succeeded by his son he attempted to reject, and his farm-boy barrel-tough boyfriend. they bring home the first wife that van eck had committed, for failing to produce the 'perfect' heir. no perfect heteronormative future here!

(also by virtue of wylan and jesper being a mlm couple, there is now way less emphasis that can be put on the idea of biological children 'continuing' the line, and it somewhat stops the expectation that ruined wylan's life from being passed down)

the two m/f couples are also very distant from this idealised reproductive futurity. matthias dies, ruining any idea of a 'conventional' future he could have had with nina, and while his death is generally more about the extremist brainwashing stuff explored w the drüskelle, it does blow to shreds that futurity even more, and nina's power is also a very literal HEY GUYS. LET'S THINK ABOUT DEATH... plus she leaves ketterdam to take matthias to be buried at the end of the book.

kaz and inej both do very dangerous jobs and separate for long periods of time. they may marry or they may not, they may have children or they may not, they may be physical with one another or they may not. it doesn't really matter; they'll try, but we don't get to find out how far they may or may not get, which honestly I kinda like. their future is open, the river running carrying inej to the sea. also, inej makes an explicit rejection of this kind of 'normal' future:

So he wasn’t fit for a normal life. Was she meant to find a kindhearted husband, have his children, then sharpen her knives after they’d gone to sleep? How would she explain the nightmares she still had from the Menagerie? Or the blood on her hands?

we don't really know whether or not kaz as a character is queer (I do not think kaz knows either lol) but it doesn't really matter, you can still read him as a queer figure both a) just if you want to! and b) in this sense of queer temporality, bc he's the crux of a lot of it. we already covered the bastard thing and his happy habit of kicking reproductive futurism when it's down, and as Edelman says: 'If the fate of the queer is to figure the fate that cuts the thread of futurity...' well, kaz 'build something new. watch it burn' 'he knew exactly what he was going to leave behind: damage' brekker is our man!

he does not give a single flying fuck about the future. he destroyed van eck and rollins' legacies, and he'll do that shit again. he doesn't have enough of an ego to consider a 'legacy' for himself besides destruction, which is a rejection of a legacy in itself. his plans for the future amount to fucking shit up and making a bunch of money to use to do more damage, until he gets shot/stabbed/hanged/drowned/whatever, which he constantly anticipates.

kaz also has a massive distrust and disdain for traditional family structures, because he's seen them crumble twice; his actual family are all dead, and the hertzoon con was built on creating a convincing family mode to lure them in. "my mother is ketterdam, she birthed me in the harbour; my father is profit, I honour him daily" is a sneer at paterfamilias type families where the mother is there to just give birth and the father is the head of the family, to be honoured and served, rather than loved. he also has zero sympathy for the 'think of the children!' thing, bc he knows it's disingenuous; who thought of him? no one. rollins was happy to con kids with the false promise of family and safety, and all the people he paid off were happy to turn the other way. was there no one to look after you? no, there wasn't. his mother is ketterdam: filthy, feral ketterdam. no nurturing mother has he!

So he threatens Alby and Hanna with no qualms, because while he doesn't actually ever intend to hurt children (...not physically anyway, apparently upsetting them is fair game FJJFJD), he knows the power of the threat— the idea of the child— is often more impactful than the actual act itself. ("Inej, I could only kill Pekka’s son once. He can imagine his death a thousand times.") it certainly works on rollins and van eck! he'll make you think of the damn children alright!

inej takes direct action to defend actual children, not just the idea of them, and then we hear in rule of wolves she's hated by the kerch government for it because she's fucking with their profits. (look also to how they flapped about searching for wylan, one rich man's kid, and are completely useless about hundreds of forced indentures. what a surprise...)

she reunites with her parents, but she worries persistently about whether or not they will accept her for who she has become, and we are never quite told whether or not they do. we like to think so, but we don't actually know. and although she gets to see her parents again, her future is on the wraith, not with them.

most people have dead or splintered families, actually. only inej has both parents, and for three - four years, they didn't have a daughter.

The general proximity to death in general is very potent; nina's power, kaz's whole backstory, the camping out in a graveyard. jesper's recklessness and love for fights, inej being ready to die rather than be a captiver again and kaz's response to that being 'not just yet', rather than not at all...

all following into the whole no mourners, no funerals thing!!! the fact that they know they won't be remembered or cared about if they die!!!

Edelman: 'Choosing to stand, as many of us do, outside the cycles of reproduction, choosing to stand, as we also do, by the side of those living and dying each day with the complications of AIDS, we know the deception of the societal lie that endlessly looks toward a future whose promise is always a day away.'

Inej's mother and father might still shed tears for the daughter they'd lost, but if Inej died tonight, there would be no one to grieve for the girl she was now.

zelda's role is to take up the powers of hylia. zelda has always been a girl, a woman. of course all of them would be. hylia is a goddess. the first zelda was hylia's personal vessel.

botw zelda [ going to call him zel here on out in this post for clarity lol ] would have to come to terms with how his feelings don't align with his self-perceived role. at first, he thinks his yearning to be a boy is more to do with hating his responsibilities. i think his relationship with both his gender and his role in destiny is an incredible complicated one because of all of this.

meeting link, the other destined one, probably really fucks him up more. link being a trans boy himself, on a surface level, one might think would bring zel relief; someone like him, so close to him. but it does the opposite. link has always been a boy. this link, being assigned female at birth, is a boy as well. to zel, this reaffirms his thoughts that destiny has locked their genders into place.

in general, i don't think transphobia is a huge thing in the loz universe. it's like, a very niche kind of bigotry thankfully. it's MY childhood fantasy games and i get to mostly poof it out. i think the big exception to this would be those associated with destiny, prophecies, and of course, the reincarnation cycle.

zel is pressured to not only be a good daughter and princess, but to take on the powers that should be blessed to him by the goddess herself. everything just drives him further into hating everything, including link early on.

a big part of zel being able to actually unlock his powers would be both what i think happens in game [ desperation to protect ] as well as acceptance of himself. zel's inner turmoil over his own identity, where his duty as holder of the triforce of wisdom starts and right to be himself ends.

of course, there's no actual reason for the holder of wisdom to be a woman; as there is none for the holder of courage or power to be a man. it just so happens that it tends to be like that.

i think a retelling like this could add such a strong layer onto zel's character arc. it's so good. augh. thank yuo i hope any of this is somewhat coherent. they kiss in the end

btw i think generally trans masc zeldas go for the name sheik [ thank you OOT sheik you walked so the other tran masc zeldas could run ] but botw zelda specifically would take the scientific name of like, a small critter or plant, and alter it so it sounds kind of like a hylian name. OR just go by 'zel'. or both ! idk.
